With all the excitement of packing your bags, jumping on a plane, and jetting off to a faraway destination, travel insurance may be the last thing on your mind. You may be asking yourself “Can I buy travel insurance after departure?” The answer is yes!

If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your policy has run out and you’re still on the road, don’t panic. World Nomads simple and flexible travel insurance plans that you can buy online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.

How do I get travel insurance if I’ve already left home or I’m already overseas?

It’s easy. All you need is a good internet connection. Head to our website to get a quote. Answer a few simple questions about your trip and follow the prompts that will outline the coverage and benefits we offer. You can compare our Standard and Explorer plans when you get a quote and select the one that best suits your needs. Then add any activities you plan to participate it, read and accept the terms and conditions, pay for your insurance, and you’re done.

Are there any waiting periods when I buy while abroad?

If you buy a policy while travelling, waiting periods, conditions and restrictions on coverage do apply. There will be no coverage for any injury or sickness for a period of 48 hours from your departure date.

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

We’ve designed our travel insurance to be simple, flexible and include the things our travellers have told us are most important to them. Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer coverage, up to the policy limits, for the following, when you need it the most:

  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance for a range of events including medical emergencies and multi-lingual assistance when your trip has not gone as planned.
  • Emergency medical coverage that includes coverage for hospitalization ambulance transportation, emergency dental and emergency professional services. You must be covered under your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the duration of your trip.
  • Coverage for delayed, lost or stolen baggage, gear and sporting equipment.
  • Coverage for some of your non-refundable, pre-paid transportation and accommodation expenses when you’ve had to unexpectedly cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.
  • Coverage for more than 150 adventure activities, sports, work and volunteer experiences, including rock climbing snowboarding, bungee jumping, and snorkeling. You’ll list the activities you plan to participate in when you buy your policy. Level 1 activities are automatically covered, and you’ll need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities.
  • Coverage when your trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled and you are stuck at the airport, or your trip is postponed indefinitely.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy.  It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions, and pre-existing condition exclusions.  If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.
