Before your trip, check the latest government advice for any travel alerts for your destination.

Not all adventures require a passport stamp - sometimes, the best getaways are right on your doorstep. A weekend hiking in Snowdonia, a coastal escape to Cornwall, or a city break in Edinburgh – there’s so much to explore right here in the UK.

But whether you’re hiking the Scottish Highlands, exploring Cornwall’s rugged coastline, or city-hopping from London to Edinburgh, unexpected travel mishaps can still happen.

With a World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policy, you can get cover for domestic trips if you’ve pre-booked and paid for at least two nights of accommodation. Here’s what you need to know about what’s covered and what’s not.

What are the benefits of domestic trip insurance?

Here’s what’s covered (and why it matters).

  • Trip disruption

Life happens, and sometimes your trip doesn’t go as planned. Whether it’s a storm cancelling your weekend in the Lake District or a family emergency forcing you to cut a trip short, your insurance may help with:

  • Cancelling your trip: If you suddenly fall ill before departure or must cancel for a covered reason, you may be able to claim back non-refundable costs:
    • £3,000 (Standard Plan)
    • £5,000 (Explorer Plan)
  • Cutting your trip short: If you need to return home early, we may help with unused accommodation and travel expenses up to:
    • £3,000 (Standard Plan)
    • £5,000 (Explorer Plan)
  • Medical cover

Yes, the NHS has your back, but that doesn’t mean medical issues won’t derail your trip. Your insurance may help with:

  • Medical repatriation: if you break your leg hiking Ben Nevis and need to be moved closer to home for specialist care, your cover may include up to £10,000,000 (Explorer Plan).
  • Extra accommodation and travel expenses: Where it is medically necessary following an insured event, we can offer cover for some additional costs incurred. For example, expenses incurred for a friend or family member to travel from the UK to stay with you in hospital.
  • Hospital benefit: If you end up admitted for more than 24 hours, you could receive a daily payout to help with extra costs:
    • £20 per 24 hours (Standard Plan), max £200
    • £50 per 24 hours (Explorer Plan), max £1,000
  • Repatriation of remains: In the worst-case scenario, cover includes up to £25,000.
  • Personal belongings

Lost bags, stolen wallets, and broken cameras aren’t just international travel problems. If your gear goes missing during your UK trip, you could be covered for:

  • Personal baggage: If your luggage is lost or damaged on a train to London, you could claim up to:
    • £1,500 (Standard Plan)
    • £3,000 (Explorer Plan)
    • Single Item Limit £125 per item (Standard) | £250 per item (Explorer)
  • Money & travel documents: If your wallet disappears at a music festival, your cover includes:
    • Travel documents: £300 (Standard) | £600 (Explorer)
    • Money: £0 (Standard) | £200 (Explorer)
  • Other cover

  • Personal Accident: if you suffer a life-changing injury, such as permanent disability or death, the policy provides a lump sum:
    • £10,000 (Standard Plan)
    • £25,000 (Explorer Plan)
  • Personal Liability: if you suffer a life-changing injury, such as permanent disability or death, the policy provides a lump sum:
    • £2,000,000 per trip (for all insured persons per policy, per trip)
  • Extra Benefits of World Nomads Travel Insurance

SmartDelay™: relax while you wait

Flight delays are a nightmare - especially when you're stuck in an airport with nowhere to sit and overpriced sandwiches for company. That’s where SmartDelay comes in. If your departure is delayed beyond a set time, you may get free access to an airport lounge, where you can stretch out, grab a snack, and wait in comfort.

Exclusions of domestic travel insurance

Travel insurance is a lifesaver when things go wrong - but it doesn’t cover everything under the sun. Your policy spells out the fine print, but here are a few key exclusions to keep in mind:

  • Pre-existing conditions: If you’ve had tests or treatment for a condition in the 180 days before buying or extending your policy, it won’t be covered.
  • Alcohol & drugs: Had one too many at the pub and ended up in A&E? If an incident happens while under the influence, you’re on your own.
  • Illegal activities: If you’re breaking the law and things go sideways, don’t expect your insurance to bail you out.
  • Some personal belongings: Items like bikes or sporting equipment (whilst in use), won't be covered under the policy. If you are mountain biking in the Scottish highlands and require cover for your mountain bike, check your policy first.

Pre-existing medical conditions

You are not eligible to buy a policy if you travel against medical advice, travel with the intention of receiving medical treatment, or have a terminal illness. World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not. You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion cannot be removed, and you will be responsible for any related costs.

For information on travel insurance providers that offer cover on PEMC, visit Money Helper or call 0800 138 7777.
