With flights from London to Montenegro taking just a few hours, it’s no surprise that thrill-seeking Brits are drawn to the rugged mountain hikes in Lovćen National Park. The stunning views of the Bay of Kotor make the climb worth every step. Whether you’re strolling the cobblestoned streets of Kotor or taking on Montenegro’s wild terrain, the unexpected—like a twisted ankle—can strike. That’s where travel insurance comes in, keeping your adventure on track, no matter the twists and turns (or bumps and bruises).

What should I look out for when travelling to Montenegro?

Whether you're hiking the mountains or working remotely as a digital nomad, Montenegro’s packed with adventure, but we all know things don’t always go as planned when travelling abroad. Things can (and do) go wrong—from lost luggage to sudden weather shifts—World Nomads may be able to come to your aid in the following situations:

  • Baggage cover: The last thing you want is to land in Montenegro without your suitcase. The good news is, with World Nomads, if your baggage is delayed for more than 24 hours, we may cover essential items (up to £100 per person on the Standard Plan and £200 per person on the Explorer Plan). If your bags don’t show up at all, World Nomads may cover up to the policy limits (up to £1,500 per person on the Standard Plan and £3,000 per person on the Explorer Plan) to replace your belongings. Just be sure to get a police report or a written statement from your airline detailing the loss.
  • Digital nomads: Travelling while working remotely? Consider protecting your gear with our High-Value Items upgrade. Specify your items when purchasing your policy, and if they’re stolen or damaged, we may cover the lesser of the specified or replacement value. But keep in mind, there’s no cover for items left unattended, stored unsafely, or checked in (unless required by the carrier). Travel insurance cover is subject to any other insurance that you might have in place covering your gear.
  • Trip cancellation coverage: Life can be unpredictable, whether an unexpected illness or jusy service. If, for some reason, you need to cancel your trip, our trip cancellation coverage could reimburse unused travel and accommodation costs.

What’s covered

Whether tackling Montenegro’s rugged mountains, cycling through scenic coastal routes, or exploring its ancient towns, World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans for Brits on the go: Standard and Explorer, which provide cover (up to policy limits) for:

  • Emergency medical travel insurance: From minor injuries to significant health issues, our plans cover overseas medical expenses (up to £5,000,000 per person on the Standard Plan and £10,000,000 per person on the Explorer Plan), so you can focus on recovering, not the bills.
  • Medical evacuation coverage: If you need urgent medical treatment far from home, we may arrange transport to the nearest appropriate facility.
  • Medical repatriation: In severe cases, we can help get you back to the UK for further medical care.
  • World Nomads Powered by Air Doctor: We know that there are times when travellers need medical advice, but the medical issue doesn’t warrant a lengthy stay in an overseas E.R., which is why we offer Air Docter to all our policyholders. With Air Doctor, you can speak with a doctor from the comfort of your hotel room—minus the language barriers.
  • Emergency medical assistance: Our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team is always ready to guide you through any emergency medical crisis, no matter where your adventure takes you.

Annual Multi-Trip or Single Trip Travel Insurance?

Is Montenegro just one of the destinations on your bucket list this year? It could be financially savvy to consider looking into World Nomads Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance.

Activities in Montenegro

From hiking the stunning trails of Biogradska Gora National Park to mountaineering through the rugged Prokletije range, mountain biking and kayaking to whitewater rafting on the Tara River, there’s no doubt Montenegro’s a playground for British adventurers. Whether scaling peaks, diving into crystal-clear waters, or embarking on a multi-day trek, World Nomads offers travel insurance for 150+ adventure sports and activities

What’s not covered

We aim to please, but we don’t cover everything. Here are some instances where our travel insurance won’t cover you:

  • No cover for reckless behaviour: If you’re acting recklessly or not following local laws (like ignoring safety warnings), you won’t be covered.
  • Alcohol or drugs: Any incidents that happen while you’re under the influence won’t be covered.
  • Unattended belongings: If you leave your gear unguarded or in an unlocked car, and it’s stolen, that’s on you.
  • Activities outside your policy: Planning to push the limits? Make sure it’s listed on your policy, or you won’t be covered if something goes pear-shaped.

Dive into your policy details for the full scoop, and if anything needs to be clarified, contact us.

When it comes to your policy, don’t just skim the fine print—read it thoroughly. Make sure you know exactly what’s covered (and what’s not). Some activities might require specific qualifications, licenses, or the guidance of a pro.

Traveler Tip 1Montenegro’s coastal gems, like Kotor, are breathtaking. If you don’t enjoy the chaos of a summer crowd (and let’s face it, English folk don’t exactly love scorching summer heat), consider visiting during the shoulder seasons—spring or early autumn—when you can enjoy the beauty without the bustle.

Traveler tip 2:  Brits are accustomed to unpredictable weather, Montenegro’s mountains are no different. Be prepared for sunshine one moment, and chill the next…and pack layers

Traveler tip 3:  Plan your adventures before purchasing your policy to ensure adequate coverage. Once the policy is in place, you can’t change it.

Pre-existing medical conditions

World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not. You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion cannot be removed, and you will be responsible for any related costs.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about Montenegro. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Does travel insurance cover altitude sickness in Montenegro?

If you’re used to the flat landscapes of the UK, Montenegro’s mountain hikes may bring some challenges. Our policies may cover medical treatment for altitude sickness if you're trekking through Montenegro's higher-altitude spots like Durmitor National Park. Check altitude limits in your policy—depending on your country of residence, you may need additional coverage if you’re climbing above a certain height. • Is Montenegro a safe destination for British travellers?
Yes, Montenegro is generally considered a safe destination for British travellers. Its friendly locals, vibrant tourism infrastructure, and beautiful landscapes attract thousands of visitors each year. However, like any destination, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or when hiking in remote locations.
  • How reliable is the healthcare system in Montenegro?
The Montenegro healthcare system offers basic services in urban areas, but facilities may be limited in more remote areas (like in the mountain ranges). In some severe cases, travellers may find themselves needing to be transported to a nearby country like Croatia—which could be costly without travel insurance.
  • Is Montenegro prone to extreme weather conditions?
Montenegro has a reputation for snap storms, surprise snowfalls, and coastal flash floods. While our adventurers relish a good surprise, these natural twists aren't quite the thrills they seek—which is why they travel with travel insurance, for when Mother Nature gets a little moody.
