From the lush jungles and ancient ruins of Palenque to the UNESCO World Heritage listed, Guanajuato City, famous for its cobbled streets and colonial architecture, Mexico has every type of activity for British travellers whether you want to wind down or get your adrenaline pumping.
Despite its incredible natural wonders, Mexico can also be a dangerous place, especially if you don’t know the language or end up in the wrong part of town. However British travellers shouldn’t be deterred from experiencing one of the world’s most interesting and friendly cultures.
Here are some tips on how to stay safe and how to make the most out of your travel insurance cover.
If your airline loses your luggage or you’re exploring the bars and cafes around Costa Maya and your wallet goes missing, you’ll need to get in touch with the police as soon as possible. Theft is one of our most common travel insurance claims by travellers in Mexico, which is why World Nomads travel insurance plans offer some protection for theft or lost luggage checked into a common carrier.
Whatever happens, you'll need to get a written report of the incident. If there has been a theft, you must report this to the police. For theft or other incidents including loss of items, you must also report this to another authority, such as your tour operator, Bus Company, airline or hotel. This will need to be done as soon as reasonably possible in order to support your claim.
We understand this can be a challenge when you’re in a country where you don't speak the language. Thankfully, our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team can try (where possible) to help you negotiate the local administration.
If something goes wrong, such as a robbery, accident or illness, we provide travel insurance that can help with:
If you need more tips on travelling abroad during COVID-19 restrictions our COVID-19 travel insurance tips may provide some answers.
Remember to always research any country you’re planning to visit as there may be UK government imposed travel restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all travel or against all but essential travel then your World Nomads policy could be restricted.
For the most up-to-date info on travelling to Mexico and other countries, visit the FCDO website, which includes coronavirus travel guidance, security and local laws, and passport and visa information.
Many of us have been guilty of over indulging when it comes to Mexico’s amazing food and drinks or have come down with a bad case of Gastro. The danger with food poisoning or drinking contaminated water is that vomiting and diarrhoea can result in serious dehydration which can be deadly so don’t rely on your own instincts or the Internet to get medical advice.
These kinds of emergencies can take down even the most experienced British traveller. That’s why the services of our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team are essential. Our team can give you advice on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas where access to medical care can be tricky), and monitor your medical treatment if needed to make sure you are getting proper care.
If you're involved in an accident, for example, while visiting the Mayan ruins that requires emergency medical treatment during your trip, your policy may cover emergency medical expenses for:

While on a bus from Belize City to Chetumal, Mexico, I put my large backpack into the storage area on the bus. After I transferred to a bus heading to Tulum, I discovered that my laptop was no longer in my backpack.

You are not eligible to buy a policy if you travel against medical advice, travel with the intention of receiving medical treatment, or have a terminal illness. World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not. You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion cannot be removed, and you will be responsible for any related costs.
For information on travel insurance providers that offer cover on PEMC, visit Money Helper or call 0800 138 7777.
