Trip Disruption: What's Covered & What's Not

Sometimes things happen that are outside of your control and result in you needing to make a change to your trip. If your trip is disrupted, you may be able to reclaim costs you incur as a result.

What is covered under trip disruption?

We may cover you for reasonable additional travel expenses up to the standard of your original booking, which are attributed directly to an Insured Event that results in your trip being interrupted.

Please note: This is only available with our Explorer Plan (under Trip Disruption) and can offer cover if your trip is disrupted after you leave your home.

What are insured events?

Cover is provided for insured events when they are sudden, unforeseen, inevitable, outside of your control, and occur after you have been issued your Certificate of Insurance.

Our policies offer the following cover if your trip is interrupted (Explorer plan only):

  • Missed departure from the UK:

Cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses where you are delayed in reaching your departure point in the UK and this causes you to miss your pre booked transport. Alternatively, if the only reasonable transport means you will lose more than 50% of your trip, you can claim under Cutting Short Your Trip.

  • Delay and abandonment:

Cover for additional expenses such as meals, refreshments and accommodation where your pre booked transport is delayed by at least 12 hours.

Or
  • Additional transport costs:

Cover for additional expenses to return home to the UK when you are delayed outside the UK for at least 24 hours beyond your original return date.
  • Abandonment:

Before leaving the UK and you are delayed at least 12 hours, you can claim for unused travel and accommodation costs or if the only reasonable transport means you will lose more than 50% of your trip, you can claim under Cutting Short Your Trip.
  • Substitute accommodation:

Cover for additional accommodation costs if you you are forced to move from your pre-booked accommodation into an alternative at the same destination.

  • Missed departure and connections outside the UK:

Cover for additional travel and accommodation costs and the cost of prescription medication if your supply runs out when you miss your pre booked transport and you are stranded abroad.

Please note: This cover is only available with our Explorer Plan (Under Trip Disruption) and can offer cover if your trip is interrupted after you leave your home.

Things that aren’t covered by trip disruption insurance

Some of the things we won’t cover with regard to the trip disruption benefit include:

  • You declining any reasonable alternative service or compensation offered by your carrier or other travel service provider.
  • You not having allowed for the travel service provider’s official minimum check-in or transit time. For example: not leaving reasonable time for traffic delays is not a claimable event.
  • Withdrawal from service, temporarily or otherwise, of the aircraft, coach, train or sea vessel on the order or recommendation of the Civil Aviation Authority or Port Authority or similar body in any country.
  • You being denied boarding due to drug use, alcohol or solvent abuse, or your inability to provide a valid passport, visa or other documentation required by the carrier or their handling agents.
  • You travelling against the advice of the local or the UK Government authority relevant in the circumstances. We won’t cover any loss, claim or expenses that directly or indirectly relate to or arise from travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a government warning of ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
  • An epidemic, pandemic, or World Health Organization declaration of a public health emergency of international concern.

This is a summary only and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you have any questions, please contact us.
