The only thing better than exploring a new country? Exploring two, three, four, or even more, new countries. If you’re going to be traveling to multiple destinations, you may want to consider protecting yourself with travel insurance.

Sure, more countries mean more opportunities for fun. But they also mean more unfamiliar cultures to encounter, safety issues to research, and transit systems to navigate.

What are the benefits of getting travel insurance for multiple countries?

World Nomads offers cover for multiple destinations under one policy. Trips to many different countries are a fantastic way to explore multiple countries, regions and cities all in one trip. With World Nomads travel insurance, you can be covered for multiple destinations under one policy.

For example, if you are planning on traveling to Europe and plan to visit multiple European countries, but you’re unsure if every destination is covered, it’s worth giving our customer service agents a call. They’re happy to answer any questions, so you can go back to planning your itinerary.

Reasons to consider travel insurance for trips with multiple destination

  • Illness or injury to you, a travel companion, or an immediate family member
  • Sudden job loss or being called up for jury duty
  • Severe weather or natural disasters
  • A flight being delayed or cancelled unexpectedly, and you’re stuck at an airport
  • A family member back home falling ill or passing away
  • You plan to work, study, or do volunteer work while overseas
  • Civil unrest or acts of terrorism.

Note: Depending on your country of residence and level of cover, there may be a limit on how long each individual trip you take can be. Please check your policy wording for full details and always check the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions in the policy wording, so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you're not sure if something is covered get in touch.

Four ways travel insurance can cover multiple destination trips

  1. Trip cancellation

You spent months planning your globetrotting tour through South America, and then the worst happens. After you pre-paid for your flights, hotels, and tango dancing lessons, your trip gets canceled. It feels like all your advance planning – and advance paying – was for nothing.

Thankfully, you had the foresight to purchase travel insurance. When you’re visiting several destinations, your pre-paid expenses can add up. But, if you buy a policy with World Nomads, your trip cancellation coverage could reimburse you in the event of a globetrotter’s worst nightmare… such as an airline strike on your departure date, or you falling ill the day you were supposed to fly out. (Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and the plan you select, the Standard or the Explorer.)

Travel insurance tip: check your policy for the maximum benefit amount for trip cancellation. You may want the limit to cover 100% of your pre-paid trip costs. You should also scan your policy for the ‘covered reasons’ under trip cancellation. Only the events specified are reimbursable under your plan.

  1. Passport/ID loss and theft

You’ll need your passport and ID to accomplish the multiple destination holiday you’ve been planning. Every time you cross a border, board a plane, or check into hotels – it’s a must.

If your passport is lost or stolen on your multiple destination journey, World Nomads is here to help. With a policy, you can reach out to our Emergency Assistance Team, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The team will always be there to assist you with contacting embassies in case of a lost passport or other emergencies.

Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you select (Standard or Explorer), you could be covered for the replacement of your passport and for the inconveniences of having your passport stolen such a trip delay. Check your individual policy for exact benefits.

  1. Baggage and personal belongings

Theft

Pickpocketing is a global scourge, especially in busy tourist areas such as train stations and airports. With a World Nomads policy, your baggage and personal effects are covered up to the maximum benefit amount… handy when you find yourself in need of more than just the clothes on your back.

Travel insurance tip: when you file a claim, you’ll need to show proof of ownership of your stolen belongings. It can help to take snapshots of the contents of your suitcase before your trip and gather any receipts for valuable items.

Delays

Because travelers visiting multiple destinations often find that they are hopping aboard more planes, trains, and automobiles than a single-destination traveler, their chances of experiencing a baggage delay may be higher. In those instances, having a World Nomads policy packed away means you may have coverage for any incidentals – a change of clothes, for example – depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you select.

Travel insurance tip: Depending on your Country of Residence the 24/7 EA team may help assist you with locating your belongings wherever they may be. If your suitcase doesn’t arrive on the carousel, give us a call and we can assist you in finding your bags.

  1. Medical emergencies

24/7 Emergency Assistance Team

Accidents happen, no matter where you are on the globe. But, if you are heading to multiple countries, you could wind up needing to navigate hospitals and health care systems in different languages… some of which you may not speak.

Depending on your country of residence your World Nomads policy may help you rest a little easier, knowing that we have translation service professionals ready to assist with translations (and finding the nearest quality hospital).

Medical evacuation

If you’ve had a major accident and need emergency evacuation, you’ll be grateful to know that you can get support with your medical bills. But, in the event the worst happens, you will have enough to worry about. Why add how you’ll pay for emergency evacuation expenses to the mix?

When you have a World Nomads policy, you can, metaphorically, at least, pop a chill pill, and can relax until you’re on the mend. Wherever you are on your itinerary, you can rest assured that you’ll be in a quality hospital, whether that be across town or back in your home country.

Travel insurance tip: you’ll need permission from us for an evacuation, and reasonable exclusions apply (such as if you break your leg while bike packing while drunk… that’s on you).

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, customer service is here to help.

FAQs for travelers visiting multiple countries

When does my cover for each trip start and end?

Cover for any specific country will vary depending on the amount of time you spend there, for example, you may only be transiting through a country and only spending time at the airport for your stopover before continuing your trip. When you buy a policy, you must select all the countries where you’ll spend at least 72 hours of your trip. Your chosen countries will be shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Please be aware that our cost to insure travelers is higher for some countries and regions than others, so the premium we charge takes this into consideration.

Can I cover multiple people on the one policy?

Yes, you can. Travel insurance for multiple countries may provide cover for yourself, a travel friend, or the whole family. Always check the policy wording to see if there are any age restrictions for you or anyone travelling with you, and what the specific criteria is for including multiple people on the one policy.

Do I need cover if I’m making a stopover and not leaving the airport?

Cover will depend on your country of residence e and the type of policy you have purchased. You may be covered for a stopover if you are leaving the airport and staying in a specified destination for less than 72 hours. You can find out more by checking out our Help Centre article here.
