A Stomach Parasite in Zanzibar

How we helped when this nomad got a parasite in Zanzibar

I began experiencing stomach cramps and a constant headache for a number of days whilst in Zanzibar, which is not far from the Tanzanian coast. As soon as I returned to the mainland, I headed straight for the hospital in Dar es Salaam. The doctor who examined me ordered a blood test to rule out malaria (the results were negative) and prescribed some medication to ease the stomach cramps. I slowly improved over two weeks before the cramps returned. I had continued travelling, so visited another doctor in Cape Town, who referred me for a full blood count. The results indicated a parasite was responsible for my stomach grief. A three-day prescribed course of antibiotics led to a full recovery.
