How we helped when this nomad got their belongings stolen in Brazil

I was in Brazil, on a passenger boat from Manaus to Porto Velho, a journey that takes four days and three nights. Everyone sleeps on hammocks on one deck of the boat. During the second night, my camera was stolen - from my padlocked bag buried in my hammock. After informing the captain, he told me that there was nothing that could be done – theft was a commonplace aboard the boats. The thief also copied down all of my bank card details (although they didn’t take my card), and made an internet payment of £260 using my details. As soon as I could after getting off the boat, I went to a police station, and filed a report.
