Bandits on the Border in Belize

How we helped when this nomad got robbed in Belize

We crossed the border from Belize and got a taxi from the Guatemala border to take us to Tikal. The border road is very rough, with huge potholes, and therefore slow going. About 15 minutes into the journey, two masked gunmen jumped out from the jungle and shot one of the guns into the air to make us stop.

Our taxi (mini van) stopped and they forced us and the taxi driver to the ground and searched us all. One of the gunmen took our day sacks and then they both ran off with our belongings/money etc into the jungle. The taxi was stuck in a small ditch, but we managed to push it out and got out of there as quickly as possible.

We reported the incident as soon as we reached Tikal, to the local police, where it took about 4 hours to obtain a police report. A horrible experience that I hope is never repeated.
