Why should I consider travel insurance for Spain?

Travel insurance could help just in case you land in Barcelona, but your baggage doesn’t, you suffer a travel delay, you or your travel buddy catches COVID-19, or you need to be medically evacuated. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you have chosen, our policies may cover you for:

  • Emergency medical and evacuation - if you become ill or are in a serious accident that requires emergency treatment or evacuation, your policy may cover you for medical and surgical treatment, hospital fees, and in some cases, specialist counselling. Benefit limits apply.
  • Baggage and personal belongings - in the unfortunate event that your luggage or personal items are accidentally damaged or stolen, you may be able to claim for those items. In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours (more than 12 hours for US residents), you may be entitled to replacement costs. Check your policy wording carefully as terms and conditions apply.
  • Activities coverage - we cover more than 150 activities worldwide – including backpacking, kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan, you can read about the activities covered for your Country of Residence. Many activities also have specific conditions and exclusions you should read up on before you go. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you’ve chosen, you may need to add activities to your policy. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Cover for Coronavirus-related events: depending on your Country of Residence World Nomads offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events to help if your trip is derailed by COVID-19. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits apply and vary between plans.

What should I look out for when traveling around Spain

As fun and fascinating as Spain can be there are some things you should be aware of, such as:

Crime in Spain’s hotspots

Wandering around the streets of Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville can be a wonderful experience, but you need to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Watch out for bag snatching, pickpockets, and theft from cars. We offer cover if you're after travel insurance for your tech gear and other high value items. To upgrade the cover for high value items, list them on your policy and pay the additional premium. Make sure you have copies of all key documents you’re traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets, etc.

Coronavirus in Spain

Coronavirus remains a risk in all regions of Spain. If you're in Spain and you have symptoms or have been in contact with someone who does, call 112. You can always get in touch with our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team. Make sure you’ve checked our Coronavirus cover article and also our travel alerts page before you go.

Natural disasters in Spain

Spain experiences earthquakes, severe storms, and forest fires. Always do your research for updates. On 19 September 2021 there was a volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands. Due to the eruption, flights and travel plans were sent into disarray for people traveling to and from the Canary Islands. While we do offer cover for natural disasters, for those policies that do cover natural disasters in one way or another, you'll need to have bought a policy before the natural disaster event is known and do everything you can to minimize your expenses. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits apply and vary between plans.

Have fun at festivals but don’t overdo it

When going to party hotspots and festivals in Spain it’s important to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you're traveling solo and don’t know the language. We suggest not to overdo it when it comes to drinking and be careful of accepting drinks from strangers especially at big events. Remember that while we do offer cover for overseas travel accidents such as, hospitalization, day surgery and out-patient treatment, and prescribed medicines, you won’t be covered if you’re on drugs or have been drinking alcohol excessively or if you’ve been acting illegally.

What's not covered

Here are some of the things we do not provide cover for:

  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by your Country of Residence.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies)
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Schengen Visa to travel to Spain?

Yes! When in Europe, it’s very important to have a valid passport and a Schengen visa if you’re not a European citizen as this will help you move freely around the 27 EU member states. If you’re traveling to Spain on a short trip, you will likely need to apply for a Schengen short-stay visa for Spain. Consult the Schengen Visa website for more details.

Is proof of COVID vaccination required to enter Spain?

Entry to Spain no longer requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination. For full details on entry requirements for your Country of Residence, consult your country’s travel advisory.

Will my insurance cover me if I take part in the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona?

We don’t cover any sport or activity that’s not listed in your policy wording. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult your policy and policy wording. If you’re still not sure, get in touch, and we can help answer your questions.
