Calm waters, crystal clear visibility and a bulletproof dive plan might make for the perfect underwater adventure, but accidents can happen, even to the most experienced divers. Whether you're learning or you’ve done hundreds of dives, World Nomads travel insurance can help take the pressure off you and your family when the unexpected sinks your next dive trip.

World Nomads love Scuba Diving

As passionate divers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover dives from the Great Blue Hole to The Yongala and more.

  • Recreational scuba diving (qualified divers to 30 or 50 meters)
  • Discover scuba dives (with qualified instructors)
  • Shark cage diving, cavern, cave and wreck diving (some plans only, check yours carefully)
  • Snorkelling, island escapes, live-aboard trips and more

You should note that travel insurance coverage for scuba diving varies between plans and once purchased, you can’t change your cover – that’s why it’s important to consider the kind of diving you plan to do on your trip and check the level of cover you’ll need before you choose your plan.

What’s covered - why buy travel insurance when going scuba diving?

While cage diving in Hawaii or scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef may be number one on your ‘To Do list’, we know that things can go wrong from time to time. That’s why we’ll assist you with coverage if you become seriously ill or injured while diving and need urgent medical assistance. This includes:

  • Evacuation: if it’s urgent and medically necessary (by the most appropriate means whether by road, sea or air when necessary and available).
  • Emergency medical expenses: for treatment at the hospital or local medical center including decompression treatment if agreed as medically necessary by your treating doctor and our medical specialist.
  • Repatriation: We may offer you a ride back home if you’re seriously ill or injured and unable to continue your trip.
  • Sporting Equipment: Our policies may also provide cover for the theft or damage of sporting equipment (except while it’s being used or left unattended), or damage to sporting equipment by a common carrier. So if your fins, mask or scuba equipment gets damaged or stolen while in transit with a common carrier, you can make a claim. Terms, limits, conditions and exclusions apply so it’s worth taking the time to read more about this in your policy before heading overseas.

If you’re in need of a medical evacuation, repatriation or if you’re admitted to hospital, you or someone with you must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team immediately..

If you are wondering eho pays for medical treatment,(and by this we mean either you pay upfront and claim later, or we pay), it depends on what’s happened to you and the necessary treatment required.

Also be aware that any medical claim or sporting equipment claim submitted will have a policy excess deducted per person, per claimable event.

What’s not covered

You should note that all scuba diving activities have a number of special exclusions which apply. This means there is no cover available under our policies for:

  • Any unaccompanied dive;
  • Any dive for gain or reward;
  • Any dive which takes you deeper than your current qualification limits, or any dive deeper than 30 metres (or 50 metres if the appropriate additional premium has been paid) under any circumstances;
  • Personal Accident insurance cover;
  • If you act with disregard for your own safety, gross negligence or actively engage in any illegal act;
  • Search and rescue under any circumstances;
  • Any on-going medical expenses once you return to your home country;
  • Any other reason listed under the General Exclusions in your Policy Wording.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.
