Planning a trip to Europe soon? You will need to be aware of changes coming into effect this year and also in 2026. Read on to find out more and how World Nomads travel insurance can help travellers planning a trip to Europe.
From October 12, non-EU nationals including New Zealanders who enter a European zone of 29 countries, known as the Schengen Zone, will have to register as part of a new European Union digital border management system called Entry Exit System (EES).
New Zealand citizens can travel for short trips, without a visa, to the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You'll need a visa if you're staying for over 90 days.
The EES is a separate system from the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will be a separate travel authorization system introduced in late 2026. Learn more about the ETIAS by checking out our Travel Wiser article.
New Zealand travellers can stay informed with SafeTravel for travel updates, alerts, and general travel information.
