Whether you're swapping Ireland’s green hills for Montenegro’s rugged mountains or exploring the picturesque Bay of Kotor, an adventure awaits just a short flight away. But while the Balkans are full of beauty, unexpected hiccups like lost luggage or a sprained ankle on the trails can happen. That’s where travel insurance comes in—helping Irish travellers stay protected throughout their journey.

What should I look out for when travelling to Montenegro?

Before you swap the Emerald Isle for Montenegro's rugged peaks and charming coastlines, keep in mind that adventure often comes with unpredictability. Things can (and do) go wrong—from lost luggage to sudden weather shifts—World Nomads may be able to come to your aid in the following situations:

  • Baggage cover: The last thing you want after landing in Montenegro is missing luggage. With World Nomads, if your bags are delayed for over 24 hours, we may cover the cost of essentials (up to €125 per person with the Standard Plan and €250 per person on the Explorer Plan). If your bags go completely AWOL, we could cover up to €1,500 on the Standard Plan or €3,000 on the Explorer Plan. Don’t forget to get the paperwork—either a police report or a statement from the airline.
  • Digital nomads: Protect your tech while travelling by specifying your valuable gear when purchasing your policy. Will your premium cost more? Yes. But do you need your laptop to make an income? Most likely, yes. Just be sure your gear’s stored safely, as items left unattended or checked in (unless required) won’t be covered. Travel insurance cover is subject to any other insurance that you might have in place covering your gear.
  • Trip cancellation coverage: Life can be unpredictable, whether an unexpected illness or jury service. If, for some reason, you need to cancel your trip, our trip cancellation coverage could reimburse unused travel and accommodation costs.

What’s covered

From the towering peaks of Montenegro to its ancient seaside towns, World Nomads ensures that Irish travellers are well protected with our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans, which provide cover (up to policy limits) for:

  • Emergency medical travel insurance: No one plans to travel overseas and experience a sudden medical emergency, but unfortunately, we speak to travellers every day in that exact position. If you find yourself injured in Montenegro and require assistance with overseas medical expenses, we may be able to help.
  • Medical evacuation coverage: If you’re deep in the remote mountains, far from medical facilities, and involved in a motor vehicle accident, injure yourself, or even develop a severe case of altitude sickness, an airlift to the nearest hospital may be your best option—though it can be costly. If you’re insured with World Nomads, we may be able to help.
  • Medical repatriation: In severe cases, we can help get you back to Ireland for further medical care.
  • Emergency assistance: Language barriers are a common issue in overseas emergencies, which is why our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team is ready to guide you through any crisis, no matter where your adventure takes you.

Activities in Montenegro

From hiking the stunning trails of Biogradska Gora National Park to mountaineering through the rugged Prokletije range, mountain biking and kayaking to whitewater rafting on the Tara River, there’s no doubt Montenegro’s a playground for adventurers. Whether scaling peaks, diving into crystal-clear waters, or embarking on a multi-day trek, World Nomads offers travel insurance for 150+ adventure sports and activities

What’s not covered

We aim to please, but we don’t cover everything. Here are some instances where our travel insurance won’t cover you:

  • No cover for reckless behaviour: You won't be covered if you’re not playing by the rules or acting recklessly (like ignoring local laws).
  • Alcohol or drugs: Any incidents that happen while you’re under the influence won’t be covered.
  • Unattended belongings: If you leave your gear unguarded or in an unlocked car and it’s stolen, the responsibility is yours.
  • Activities outside your policy: Planning to try something extreme? Ensure it’s listed in your coverage, or you won’t be covered if something goes wrong.

Dive into your policy details for the full scoop, and if anything needs to be clarified, contact us.

Regarding your policy, don’t just skim the fine print—read it thoroughly. Ensure you know exactly what’s covered (and what’s not). Some activities might require specific qualifications, licenses, or the guidance of a pro.

Traveller Tip 1: If you’re headed to Montenegro from Ireland, you’ll need the local currency: the Montenegrin Euro. Don’t forget to speak to your bank before you leave to avoid issues accessing cash abroad. Some banks even offer multi-currency cards that help reduce foreign exchange fees.

Traveler tip 2:  Planning on hiring a car? Remember, although scenic, most Montenegro roads are narrow and windy, so stay vigilant. Keep in mind that to be covered, you must hold a current Irish licence and obey all local driving laws.

Traveler tip 3:  Plan your adventures before purchasing your policy to ensure adequate coverage. Once the policy is in place, you can’t change it.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about Montenegro. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Do I need travel insurance for Montenegro?
While it’s not mandatory to have travel insurance for Montenegro, it's highly recommended. From hiking in rugged mountain ranges to exploring coastal towns, unexpected mishaps—whether medical or logistical—can happen.
  • Does travel insurance cover altitude sickness in Montenegro?
Some travel insurance plans might cover medical treatment for altitude sickness if you're trekking through Montenegro's higher-altitude spots like Durmitor National Park. Check altitude limits in your policy—depending on your country of residence, you may need additional coverage if you’re climbing above a certain height.
  • Does travel insurance cover altitude sickness in Montenegro?

Some travel insurance plans might cover medical treatment for altitude sickness if you're trekking through Montenegro's higher-altitude spots like Durmitor National Park. You may qualify for medical expenses depending on the severity of the altitude sickness and the treatment required. Check altitude limits in your policy.

  • How reliable is the healthcare system in Montenegro?
The Montenegro healthcare system offers basic services in urban areas, but facilities may be limited in more remote areas (like in the mountain ranges). In some severe cases, Irish travellers may find themselves needing to be transported to a nearby country like Croatia—which could be costly without travel insurance.
  • Is Montenegro prone to extreme weather conditions?
Montenegro has a reputation for snap storms, surprise snowfalls, and coastal flash floods. While our Irish adventurers relish a good surprise, these natural twists aren’t quite the thrills they seek—which is why they travel with travel insurance, for when Mother Nature gets a little moody.
