If you buy a policy while already travelling, there's a waiting period of 72 hours before full cover can apply, and certain benefits (like pre-trip cancellation) won't be available as you’ve already left your home.
When you buy on the road, you can be covered straight away if you're injured in an accident. And if you buy a policy before you current one expires, you won't have a time gap between policies.
