Can you provide more detail on the prize inclusions?
The scholarship winners will each receive prizes valued at more than $17,000 USD, including travel to and in Africa, mentoring from The Travel Shooters (Dan and Zora), professional camera gear and more:
- Flights – return economy airfare from the recipients nearest international airport to Johannesburg, South Africa, courtesy of World Nomads (valued at approximately $2,000 USD).
- Safari Tour – courtesy of Go2Africa, spend 12-days touring through Chobe National Park (Botswana), Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Kruger National Park (South Africa).
- Professional mentorship – learn industry secrets and new skills one-on-one from experts, the Travel Shooters (Dan and Zora Avila) (valued at approximately $2,000 USD).
- Professional camera – Fujifilm X-T5 + FUJINON XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R L OIS WR valued at RRP $3,100 USD.

- Content creation requirements to build a portfolio (Winner Creative Content) for your trip assignment. Each winner will be tasked with creating photography and filmmaking content for World Nomads, Vacations & Travel magazine (Signature Media), FUJIFILM Australia Pty Ltd, and Go2Africa.

I shot my travel story using a phone. Will it have a chance?
Photography and video will be judged based equally on creativity, how visually engaging it is, and execution. So, while quality is important, it is only one factor. We appreciate great images and video can be shot on phones and encourage you to enter if you think you have a great visual travel story to share.

Am I considered a professional photographer or filmmaker?
For the purposes of this opportunity, we would consider you to be a professional photographer or filmmaker if you have been commissioned regularly to take photographs or make films (of any genre). We will also consider you to be a professional if you derive more than 25% of your income from photography or filmmaking of any kind. If you have only had a few photos or films commissioned, or keep a regular video channel of your own, then we would not consider this professional. If you are still learning the craft of photography or filmmaking and the majority of your income is not derived from these activities, then you are eligible to apply.

We appreciate that the photography and filmmaking industry is difficult to break into and there are a lucky few who can count themselves as professional full-time photographers or filmmakers. This scholarship is very much about the mentorship, and the judging panel will be selecting the person who they feel will most benefit from the learning opportunity.

If you are a finalist, you will be asked to outline your experience to date, and it will be the judging panel who decides who is most suitable based on their previous experience, application creative content and written component. So, while we are not stipulating exactly what does and does not constitute a professional, think about the spirit of the mentorship program and whether you think you would make the most ideal candidate.

Dan and Zora Avila are award-winning travel creatives. They run Cakewalk Media, a full-service production house, producing world-class photo, video and editorial for global brands and leading publications such as BBC and NatGeo. They are also set to star in Travel Shooters, a new TV series following their adventures around the world.

Dan and Zora are busting to share their knowledge with our scholarship winners by offering tailored guidance on both technical and industry skills to help them take their passion to the next level.

How to enter

1. Decide on your best travel images or video

We want to see 3-5 photos or 30-60 seconds of video you have shot, that captures a travel story. This can be new or existing work.

2. Share it with us via a publicly accessible link

Your link can be from Vimeo, YouTube, Google Drive etc. as long as it's accessible by our judging team.

3. Complete the application form

Tell us in 150 words or less why you should be the scholarship recipient and what winning this opportunity would mean to you. We’ll shortlist our favorites, and award our 3 scholarship winners.

What we're looking for

We want to see 3-5 photos or a 30-60 second video you have shot, that captures a travel story. This can be new or existing work and must be supplied as a single, publicly accessible URL link so our judges can review it. While this Scholarship is not for professionals, you'll need to convince our judging panel through your application that you have the spirit of adventure and a passion for travel photography or filmmaking. Our goal is to give the winners a foot in the door of the travel content industry, so your submission should demonstrate your talent and desire to turn your passion into a profession. Your travel photos/video should:

Visually capture a travel story.
Show originality, creativity and be visually engaging.
Showcase your excellent technique and creative composition.
Create an emotional connection or feeling when viewed.
Be visual (image or video only). Any voiceover or captions must be in English to be understood by judges.
Not have been used to win prizes in any other promotions.
Video must take 30-60 seconds to review in full – if longer, only the first 60 seconds will be reviewed.

Your 150 words or less written submission should tell us why you should be the scholarship recipient and what winning this opportunity would mean to you. We will weight entries based on photography/video (70%) and written submission (30%).

Linked entries posted to Private accounts will be disqualified. World Nomads reserves the rights to re-use your submitted content. Strictly one entry per person.
