We were blown away by the thousands of entries we received from travelers around the world, each sharing the experiences that draw them to Japan. From cherry blossoms, ramen crawls, and 7‑Eleven stops, to onsens, temples, and Mount Fuji. Overall, it was clear that travelers are seeking deeper, more meaningful ways to experience Japan beyond the usual highlights.

I'd wander Japan with no plan, just following neon signs, vending machine whims and the occasional mysterious alley cat. Maybe I'd end up singing karaoke with strangers or soaking in an onsen I didn't fully understand. I just want that delicious feeling of being joyfully, gloriously out of my depth.
World Nomads selected this entry because it celebrates travel driven by curiosity, not control. It focuses on unplanned moments, human connection, and the willingness to feel a little lost, which is where the most memorable experiences often come from. The entry doesn’t try to “do” Japan perfectly. It shows respect, openness, and joy in the unknown. I’d love to hunt for unique Gashapon in Shibuya, then get lost in the vintage shops of Shimokitazawa. There’s something so charming about the contrast between finding a tiny, plastic "surprise" and discovering a timeless fashion piece. It’s the ultimate day of exploring Japan’s creative subcultures and one-of-a-kind style.
I'd love to visit a small ama diver seafood hut where traditional women divers cook what they've just gathered from the ocean. Fresh sea urchin or abalone grilled over charcoal. I'm drawn to experiences that feel real, local, and deeply connected to place, tradition, and the rhythm of the sea.
To be Standing with my sons beneath thousands of glowing torii gates at Fushimi Inari Taisha, you hike through a mountain tunnel of vermilion arches. As dusk falls, lanterns flicker, fox statues watch silently, and the forest hums—turning a simple walk into something MAGICAL
