Dreaming of Europe? Whether you’re heading to Lisbon, Paris or beyond, you might need a Schengen visa before your trip. Keep reading to understand how it works, what the insurance requirements are, and how World Nomads Travel Insurance can help you stay covered while exploring.
If you’re planning a trip to Europe, you may have already heard of the Schengen visa. This visa was created after the Schengen Agreement, which removed internal borders between most European countries, allowing travelers to move freely between them. For Brazilian citizens, the rules are a little different: if you’re staying for less than 90 days within a 180-day period, you don’t need a Schengen visa. But if you’re planning to study, work, or stay longer than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for one.
Regardless of whether you need a visa or not, Schengen travel insurance is required. The conditions for obtaining a Schengen visa are strict: you must show proof of medical coverage insurance of at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries, covering medical emergencies, hospitalization, and medical repatriation. For more details, you can check the European Commission website.
The Schengen Area is made up of 29 countries (25 EU and 4 associated countries): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Yes, it does. Even though Brazilian travelers don’t need a Schengen visa for stays of up to 90 days, border officials may ask for proof of travel insurance when you arrive. World Nomads policies exceed the minimum requirement of €30,000 in medical coverage insurance and are valid across all Schengen countries. To ensure a smooth entry, keep a copy of your certificate of insurance with you, along with your valid passport, return ticket, proof of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient financial means for your stay.
