Japan holds so much potential for the adventurous traveler. You may be going to marvel at the street fashions of Tokyo’s bustling Harajuku district or peacefully contemplate the sakura, or cherry blossoms in springtime. Whatever’s on your travel agenda, it’s always a good idea to have insurance on your trip to explore the wonderful culture, history and geography of this fascinating country.

Setting out on a journey is always exciting. Whether it’s a week’s break from the daily routine or the adventure of a lifetime, we all want to think positive and push aside the idea that things could go wrong. But amongst the adversities we might unfortunately come up against are:

  • Lost baggage on the way to or returning from our destination;
  • Falling ill or having an accident;
  • Suffering cancellations – be it forced on us by a travel company, or something we have to do ourselves.

Whatever it is, it’s likely that if it takes place on a trip to Japan, there are cultural and language barriers to overcome. Getting a World Nomads travel insurance policy before you go is a good idea, as we may be able to help you in a range of difficult situations.

Why consider travel insurance when traveling to Japan?

Even today in the 21st century, Japan offers a visitor from Brazil a glimpse of another world, culturally, artistically and geographically. Adventuring into this vibrant and rich way of life may mean hiking or skiing the slopes of the iconic Mount Fuji, or peacefully contemplating the many temples of Kyoto.

Whatever your plans, unforeseen events such as a broken leg during an exciting adventure sport or losing your wallet during a stroll through the gardens of a temple can quickly change those plans. If something like this does happen, your travel insurance may be able to help get things back on track as soon as possible.

What’s included in your travel insurance on a trip to Japan?

Trip cancellation or interruption

Considering the distance and expense involved, a trip to Japan from Brazil may have been months, if not years, in the planning. As such, with everything in order and paid for, if something unexpected comes up at the last minute to delay or make the trip impossible, with your World Nomads insurance there may be some way of recovering costs, including prepaid, nonrefundable flights, hotel bookings or scheduled excursions.

Unexpected events may also occur once your trip has started – an immediate family member (parent, spouse or child) might fall ill back home or you or someone you’re traveling with may suffer an accident, meaning the trip has to be cut short. When this happens, your travel insurance may be able to cover the costs of getting you back home.

Delayed or lost baggage

Japan may be one of the furthest countries from Brazil, so arriving in this strange new world after a long and tiring journey can be daunting. The last thing you want to discover is that the airline has temporarily lost or mislaid your baggage, but your travel insurance may be able to help.

The first thing to do is make sure that all the documentation is properly in order with the airline company – fill out a ‘Property Irregularity Report’ and keep it safe. Then contact our assistance team - they will be able to liaise with the airline to ensure your baggage is returned to you quickly if possible.

If you do not receive your baggage within 12 hours of arrival at your destination, you may be reimbursed for the purchase of a few items of clothing and personal hygiene, because no one deserves to have to stay in the same clothes and be without a toothbrush after an 18-hour flight!

Stolen personal effects

There will be things you see in the street markets of Japan that you could never have expected, but there may also be things you never saw coming – such as an artful pickpocket making his way through the tourists.

While marveling at the beautiful cherry blossom trees, you should always keep one eye on your personal belongings. But if your handbag containing your money, credit cards, documents and passport is stolen, your travel insurance may be able to help out. The World Nomads 24-hour assistance hotline can provide guidance on:

  • Where and how to report stolen documents;
  • How to cancel credit cards;
  • The location and contact details of the nearest Brazilian consulate in order to obtain new travel documents; and
  • Guidance on how to receive funds via wire transfers from your family back in Brazil.

Medical coverage abroad

Whether it’s falling ill due to the change in climate or eating a strange new dish that doesn’t agree with you, no one can control what might lead us to seek medical help. In such circumstances, the assistance provided by your travel insurance may be able to cover what could otherwise amount to crippling medical bills.

As the world has started recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are now able to travel once again, but we should remember that this disease is now part of our world, and we should always take care to avoid risky situations. However, if you are unfortunate enough to catch COVID-19, your travel insurance plan may provide cover for medical assistance, medicines and hospital stays.

Whatever your health problem, our assistance hotline can advise you on the nearest clinic or hospital to your location and keep your family back home in Brazil informed concerning your health and situation.

If you do need to be treated by a doctor, be sure to keep all documentation safe, to ensure that any possible reimbursement for treatment goes smoothly.

Activities and sports in Japan

Extreme sports are becoming more and more popular in Japan, and you may be tempted to train in some local martial arts or explore the snow covered hills of Japan’s national parks by snowshoe or snowmobile. These kinds of sports are, by their very nature, fraught with risk, and there is always the possibility of injury.

Every one of us has our own idea of excitement and if you intend to try something adventurous, you should read through the different policies that World Nomads has to offer. Choose between the Standard, Explorer and Explorer Plus policies, to ensure you obtain the cover that best suits your needs. However, there may be certain sports that are not included in your specific policy. Which brings us to the next section.

What’s not included in your coverage?

Just as you should always make sure you know what coverage you are buying, you should also be aware of what’s not included. Medical treatment for pre-existing health conditions or planned surgery in a location noted for its expertise, for instance, would not be covered.

Also, if your trip is interrupted by natural disasters such as earthquakes, tidal waves or hurricanes, your insurance will not provide coverage.

Accidents or illnesses that occur before the terms of your insurance policy are also not covered.

These are just a couple of the areas where coverage is not provided, but to understand this fully, as with anything else, you should always read through your policy carefully.
