From the rich culture and culinary arts of Buenos Aires, through the lush valleys and high deserts of Chile, to the spectacular Patagonia region straddling both countries’ borders, the only problem when visiting Argentina and Chile is where to start! With so much diversity, and such a lot to do, it's important to make sure your travel insurance is in place.

Travel anywhere inherently carries a certain amount of risk. Whether you fly to the exciting cultural centers of Buenos Aires or Santiago, or take a bus to cross the Andes, having your bags stolen while under the care of the travel company could put a damper on your vacation at the very beginning. Travel insurance is a good idea in case your trip gets off to a rough start.

Chile and Argentina both offer many exciting possibilities for the adventurous traveler and some of the sports you may experience include:

  • Hiking and camping in Chile’s many national parks.
  • Horseback riding with the gauchos on the vast Pampas plains of Argentina.
  • Stargazing in the heights of the Atacama desert in Chile.
  • Kayaking through the crystalline waters of Chile’s Lake District.

But there is always a possibility that you could injure yourself as you cycle across the Andes or hike through the Torres del Paine National Park. A World Nomads insurance policy may have you covered for medical attention wherever you are.

It should go without saying that whenever visiting somewhere unfamiliar, you should remain aware and take extra care. Your travel insurance may cover the theft of documents, but this might not be the case if you are not attentive and leave your belongings unattended. This is why we always urge you to always be careful and keep a close eye on your bags.

What’s included in your World Nomads travel insurance policy on a trip to Chile and Argentina?

Unforeseen events can appear at any time, and your World Nomads travel insurance policy may include coverage for:

Trip Cancellation or interruption

You may have spent months planning your trip only for something to happen at the last minute that upsets everything. Maybe a loved one falls ill or you have an accident. Provided the reason falls within the categories of those covered by your policy, you may be able to recover some of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

Overseas urgent or emergency medical issues and COVID-19

It is a fact of life that we can all fall ill or suffer accidents from time to time, and, unfortunately, this can happen when we are away from home in a foreign country. Your Brazilian health plan most likely won’t be accepted in Chile or Argentina, so making sure an unexpected hospital visit will be covered is extremely comforting. Although the scenario is now improving, our current reality also includes COVID-19 and this, along with other situations requiring medical attention may be covered by your World Nomads travel insurance policy.

World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can provide support in many different ways, from directing you to the nearest medical center and helping to authorize treatment, to keeping your family back in Brazil updated on your condition. Be sure to read your policy to best understand all the support that is available to you.

Cover for 150+ adventure activities and sports when in Chile & Argentina

Chile and Argentina offer a myriad of options for the adventure traveler. From hiking the Andes Mountains to cycling or rafting through the valleys of central Chile, there is something for everyone. To cover these exciting possibilities, World Nomads offers a number of policies with different vacations in mind. When you’re planning your overseas travel to Chile and Argentina, you should compare the Standard, Explorer and Explorer Plus plans to decide which is best suited to your needs.

Baggage that is delayed, stolen, lost or damaged by the airline

So you’re all excited to head out into a fascinating new country, only to find that your baggage has been sent somewhere else or been held up en-route by the airline. This situation can be so frustrating, but travel insurance can help. If your baggage is delayed more than 12 hours, you may be reimbursed for a change of clothes and some toiletries to tide you through until you are reunited with your belongings.

You should initially fill out a Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.) and keep all your documents in order, to make sure that the process to receive any reimbursements you may be entitled to runs smoothly, thus allowing you to continue your overseas vacation as planned.

What’s not covered

Whilst World Nomads provides comprehensive travel insurance, not everything can be covered.

A lot of adventure sports are on offer in this region, but not all will be covered by your policy, for example hiking over a certain altitude or SCUBA diving beneath a certain depth.

Similarly, there are natural climatic events which are not covered in your policy, such as hurricanes, cyclones, earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanic eruptions, and other natural disasters.

Your travel insurance also cannot cover health situations relating to conditions that have existed prior to the policy start date, or specific planned treatment which may be the reason for your trip.

These are just some of the scenarios that your policy may not cover. Always carefully choose and read through the policy and general conditions to understand what is and isn’t covered before purchasing your travel insurance.
