Chris has been traveling to the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkans since the late 1990s, when he was studying for an MPhil in Byzantine Studies at Oxford University. Since then, he has lived, traveled, and taught in Southeast Europe, publishing numerous articles in newspapers, travel magazines, and websites, including National Geographic Traveller, the Observer, BBC Travel, CNN Travel, The Financial Times, History Today, Hidden Europe Magazine, The Tablet, the St. Petersburg Times, and the in-flight magazines of several international airlines. Chris also contributed to over 20 Lonely Planet guidebooks, covering Greece, the Greek islands, Crete, Turkey, Western Balkans, Romania, and Bulgaria. Chris’ fascination with this lesser-visited corner of Europe owes both to his love of history and the unexpected, of meeting unusual people and retelling unforgettable tales.
