To avoid stress at security, wear shoes that are easy to take on and off. Pack a pair of comfortable socks to slip on while you're on the plane, this will also make you feel more comfortable. Just remember, if your feet swell during the flight, it might be tricky to put your shoes back on.
Don't forget to pack any essential medicines, along with the prescriptions, sanitized wipes, and a letter from your doctor if your medicine might make airport security curious when looking through your bags. Ensure any toiletries you take on the plane are 100ml or less, and contained in a ziplock bag, otherwise pack them in your checked luggage. Be sure to check with the airline before you go, just in case the limit is lower.
Make absolutely sure you know and trust what's in any packages you travel with; never unwittingly carry illegal goods through customs. Presents, either those being given to or received from someone overseas, should be unwrapped. Wrap them once you arrive at your destination.
Drink responsibly while traveling. While under the influence of alcohol, a traveler is a bigger target for pickpockets and thieves, especially solo and female travelers.
