A destructive category five tropical cyclone (the highest category) is expected to hit Fiji's two main islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) early on Friday morning. The country's National Disaster Management Office reports that 600,000 people are in its path. Yasa is carrying winds of 125mph (200kph) with gusts of 175mph (280kph). The storm is expected to disrupt electricity and freshwater supplies. Everyone is advised to head to evacuation centers and listen to all advice.
Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Mona is currently tracking towards the Fiji Islands from the north, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. There is a high risk of flash flooding and landslides.
The Fiji Meteorological Service reports the slow-moving system is due to pass over Fiji sometime between this weekend (5th-6th) and Monday 7th before it heads towards Tonga and Niue.
There is a cyclone alert for Vanua Levu, Viti Levu, Tavanui and other neighboring small islands. The Yasawa Islands and Mamanuca Group are on a gale watch.
Fiji Airways has canceled several domestic flights between the islands, if you are traveling inter-island it's best to give them a call. If you are flying to/from Fiji, contact your airline for more information in case your flight is impacted by the cyclone.
