Military Coup Attempt - January 2019

Authorities have thwarted an attempted military coup on January 7th to seize control of the country. Several military officers have been arrested after media broadcasting offices and a major road in Libreville was taken over. These have since been reclaimed by government authorities. Tear gas was dispersed amongst civilians who had flocked to the local radio station in support of the coup attempt and gunshots have also been heard.

Travelers should exercise a high degree of caution while traveling in Gabon and be aware of their surroundings as tensions could flare up at any time.
