A honeymoon is supposed to be a joyous time as a young couple embarks on a life together.

But as Lia and Jeremy Garcia revealed on The World Nomads Podcast their year-long honeymoon was troubled by disaster after disaster.

“We had this idea that on this honeymoon, we would transform into those people that you see on Instagram, those travel couples who are blonde, have 25 abs and do yoga every morning,” Lia told the podcast hosts.

But she revealed, “I'm incredibly accident prone and my husband is just as clumsy as I am.”

Which resulted in the honeymoon from hell which included:
  • Being rescued off a waterfall in Colombia.
  • Crawling up an Andean mountain on their hands and knees.
  • Failing to get more than 2 days into the trek to Machu Picchu.
  • And crashing a BMW into a French medieval castle.

Lia writes the travel blog Practical Wanderlust which specializes in off-beat, couple’s travel.

“Our goal is to make our readers laugh and show that travel doesn’t have to be perfect.” She said.

They certainly did that.

Throughout these ordeals, they made just 2 travel insurance claims. But the hosts of the podcast, which is published by Lia’s travel insurance company World Nomads, cheekily suggested they might like to use another company in the future.

“You guys took care of us, and we appreciate you allowing us to continue our trip.”

Despite all the disasters the Garcia’s say it hasn’t affected their love of travel.

“After we got back from our trip, I couldn't give it up. I tried to go back to work and I sat down at a desk for five minutes and I was like, No, I can't do this. I just want to go travel." Said Lia.
