  • Confidence in overseas travel continues to improve
  • Britons increasingly seeking far flung adventures
  • Customers on average purchase policy two weeks before trip

Media Release: London, UK – Morocco, Philippines, and Japan are the top searched destinations for adventurous UK residents who expect to travel in the first quarter of 2023, according to the latest insights from travel insurance provider World Nomads.

Post-pandemic, searches for travel insurance policies spiked significantly year-on-year. But between 1 December 2022 – 22 January 2023, Morocco featured heavily in searches, with demand up 1,585%. Searches for policies to the Philippines were up by 1,042% whilst there was a 533% increase in searches for policies for Japan.

World Nomads has noticed customers, on average, are purchasing insurance just two weeks out from their trip. A brand survey conducted by World Nomads in December with UK customers also revealed that consumer confidence in travel is returning to pre-COVID levels. Of those surveyed, 77% said ‘there is nothing stopping me from booking travel’.

When asked how many trips they plan on taking in the next 12 months, 33% responded they intended to travel 2 to 3 times, with 15% indicating that they would travel more than 6 times. As many as 66% of respondents said they planned on travelling to a new destination, whilst ‘relaxation and disconnection’ (31%) and ‘outdoor adventure’ (23%) were the primary motivations for travel.

Jonathan Frankham, World Nomads General Manager UK and Europe, said: “Our insights show that there is a clear demand for far-flung destinations and whilst different in their offering, Morocco, the Philippines and Japan each have adventure and excitement in abundance.

“Having adequate travel insurance is important for long-haul destinations. Our data shows that on average customers purchase insurance two weeks before their trip starts, but by doing so you’re potentially missing out on coverage that may provide some recourse in the event of something happening before leaving the country. If you’re covered from the point of purchase, then you may be protected if certain events lead to your trip being cancelled or postponed.

“If activities are part of your holiday itinerary, consider a policy that will provide cover for overseas medical expenses in the event of an accident. Medical care can be expensive and bureaucratic in Japan for example. Whilst Japan offers universal health care for residents and those staying more than a year, everyone else is expected to carry some form of travel insurance at all times. Doctors may refuse to treat you without it. So, it’s important to do the research on your destination and choose a policy that works for you.

“World Nomads insurance policies are designed with adventurous travellers in mind. We offer cover for over 200 sports and activities and our customers value holidays where they discover new places, experience different cultures, and create lifelong memories through unique experiences,” said Mr Frankham.

Morocco is blessed with mild temperatures in winter and spring, and boasts year-round kitesurfing as well as camel adventures and trekking. For those who want a more relaxing holiday, the second week of February sees the town of Tafraoute host its annual Almond Blossom Festival, which brings visitors from around the world to see the blossoming trees, traditional dance displays and enjoy delicious food.

Early spring in the Philippines brings blue skies, sunshine, and little chance of rain. There are slightly fewer crowds compared to the rush of visitors who typically travel at the beginning of the year. March to April is also one of the best times in the Philippines for scuba diving, an activity for which World Nomads also offers cover.

Japan was one of the last countries to reopen following the COVID-19 pandemic, having only lifted its travel restrictions in November 2022. It is popular for its cherry blossom season from late March to early April. February is a fantastic time for avid skiers, with epic conditions on the slopes of Niseko and Hakuba. Mild weather in the south makes February a good time to explore the cities and towns.

Other destinations where travel insurance policy searches were significantly higher in comparison to the previous year include:

  • Vietnam – up 484%
  • Malaysia – up 367%
  • Netherlands – up 333%
  • Romania – up 200%
  • India – up 186%
  • Australia – up 183%
