When my mom first visited me while I was living in northern <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/europe/spain/going-urban-a-guide-to-spains-top-cities">Spain</a> in 2013, it was her first time in Europe as an adult. She was eager to sightsee, taste new foods, sip wine on terraces and people-watch past her typical bedtime. She didn't have a strict routine, nor did she want to be in bed by 10:30 pm. When I expressed my surprise, she replied with a big smile, “I'm on vacation.” I experienced a different and more relaxed version of my mom.</p> <p>We’ve traveled together a few more times since then—in Southern Italy and Croatia—and each trip shifted our dynamic. In Spain’s Basque Country, she was on my turf and relied on me to translate, navigate public transit, and choose where to eat and explore. But in <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/europe/croatia/8-things-i-wish-i-knew-before-going-to-croatia">Croatia</a>, we were equals in an unfamiliar place, and without my usual role as guide, we hit a few bumps before realizing we needed to reset our expectations. By our third mother-daughter trip, planning felt far easier; by this point, we’d learned how each other operates on the road and outside our comfort zones.</p> <p>Here are some of my tips for traveling with a parent:</p> <ul> <li><a href="#planning-styles">Figure out your planning styles</a></li> <li><a href="#travel-styles">Determing what travel styles you are comfortable with</a></li> <li><a href="#downtime">Build downtime into your itinerary</a></li> <li><a href="#recharge">Designate time alone to recharge</a></li> </ul> <h2 id="planning-styles">Figure out your planning styles </h2> <p>Before you embark on your travels, you'll get a sense of how each person's preferences are with researching and planning. For example, my mom loves the research and planning process as much as she loves traveling. We had to learn to compromise on how far in advance to begin the planning process and delegate tasks. Then, we'd set a time to come together to discuss over the phone or in-person.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Know each other's comfort levels for making reservations:</strong> Pick a deadline to make your bookings and stick to it. Indecisiveness or waiting until the last minute to book accommodations, flights and activities could mean more stress later on. Prices could be higher and you won’t have as many options.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>Discuss budget: </strong>Talking about money, including where you want to splurge and what you prefer to <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/practical/top-travel-tips-from-an-expert">save money</a> on, is essential for an enjoyable and amicable trip.</li> </ul> <h2 id="travel-styles">Determine what travel styles you are comfortable with</h2> <p>Knowing how you plan to get around is essential to minimizing any conflicts or misunderstandings. Think about your energy levels, goals, and budget. If you're traveling in the United States, renting a car may be needed, while trips to a European city are typically easy to get around, either by walking or public transit. For example, my mom enjoys taking public transport because it gives her a window into the daily lives of locals and is more economical. Check in with your parents to see if they are comfortable with walking, taking public transport or if they prefer a taxi. </p> <ul> <li><strong>Address any concerns your parents may have:</strong> Know when it's okay to encourage one option over another and when to respect each other's boundaries. If a parent expresses fear of taking public transit, talk it through and be respectful of their concerns. It’s usually not worth the fight just to save a few dollars instead of taking a taxi.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>Mobility or accessibility issues</strong>: Some public transport options, like a subway or metro, may not be ideal because lifts aren't always available. Getting to the platform may require walking up or down a lot of stairs.</li> </ul> <h2 id="downtime">Build downtime into your itinerary</h2> <p>It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of planning a trip and wanting to see as many sights as possible. Once you arrive, you may realize that distances are further than you anticipated, your energy levels are lower due to jetlag, or you're tired from walking more than you're used to. Incorporating downtime into your plans makes for a more enjoyable trip and lessens potential disappointment or resentment for having to cut things out at the last minute. Plus, downtime allows you to add any activities, such as festivals or events, or even a museum you may not have known about, to your schedule if you feel up for it. </p> <ul> <li><strong>Minimize overloading the itinerary</strong>: Having a lighter schedule means not having to race from one activity to another, which is exhausting and harder to enjoy a trip, especially for an older adult. </li> </ul> <h2 id="recharge">Designate time alone to recharge</h2> <p>Everyone can benefit from some alone time to recharge and relax, no matter how much you enjoy your parents' company. It doesn't need to be a whole or half day, simply adding an hour or two each day can be helpful for each person to tend to their interests, whether it's writing in a journal, reading a book, organizing their photos, posting to social media or taking a nap. When I traveled with my mom in Spain and in Croatia, it wasn't until a full week in that we realized our only break from each other was when we were sleeping. After that, we made sure each day we had at least an hour to be on our own to do whatever we felt like. </p> <ul> <li><strong>Consider doing some activities on your own: </strong>If one person has a preference for visiting an art museum, and the other prefers shopping, part ways for a couple of hours to do what you like.</li> </ul> <p>Traveling with a parent as an adult isn’t always seamless, but with a little communication and flexibility, it can become one of the most meaningful ways to connect. Today’s cruises are themed, bold, and far more adventurous, venturing well beyond traditional ports of call and offering innovative activities both on and off the ship. In short, there’s a cruise for every age, every style, and every interest.</p> <p>Packing for these cruises is not, however, a one-size-fits-all. The weather, the destination, and the types of activities you plan to enjoy will help shape what to include in your suitcase.</p> <h2>Cruise Packing: The Basics</h2> <p>While every itinerary is different, there are a handful of unexpected essentials that will make your time easier. These highly recommended items are unexpected but save space, making your cabin feel far more functional from the moment you unpack.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Magnetic Hooks:</strong> The walls and ceiling of most cruise ship cabins are metal, and standard rooms can be a little cramped. These hooks make for quick extra spots to hang hats, bags, swimsuits, or wet hats and gloves.</li> <li><strong>Power strip:</strong> With the number of electronics most people travel with, outlets in your cabin may be at a premium. A <strong>cruise-approved</strong>, surge-protected power strip with USB ports makes quick and safe charging much easier; just be sure it doesn’t include an extension cord, since many cruise lines prohibit those.</li> <li><strong>Towel clips and rubber shoes:</strong> Rubber-soled shoes, such as flip-flops or rubber slides, make navigating wet pool decks, or trips to the spa safer and more hygienic. Add a few sturdy towel clips to your bag as well; on windy sea days, they’re the difference between a peaceful lounge session and constantly chasing runaway towels.</li> <li><strong>Shoe organizer:</strong> A simple over-the-door shoe organizer instantly adds storage space to a compact cruise cabin. Use the pockets for shoes, extra clothing, toiletries, or anything that tends to get scattered across a tiny countertop.</li> <li><strong>Sea sickness medication:</strong> Though today’s large cruise ships are remarkably stable, seasickness can still strike even the most experienced travelers during open-ocean days or rough weather. Bring your preferred remedy, such as prescription medication, patches, wristbands, or ginger chews, and start using it before you feel queasy for the best results. Be sure to test out any new prescriptions before your cruise; it’s better to find out how your body reacts at home than halfway through the open ocean.</li> <li><strong>A passport: </strong>While your cruise line may not deem this necessary, getting off the ship and participating in onshore activities in another country makes this crucial. A few smart additions to your packing list can go a long way toward keeping you healthy and secure.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Travel Insurance*: </strong>Before any gear goes into your suitcase, you may want to consider travel insurance. When choosing a plan, you may want to focus in on the medical benefits as any kind of medical issue at sea could get very costly, especially if you need evacuation. Coverage for baggage and personal items also could come in handy.</li> <li><strong>Protect your personal information: </strong>Your luggage spends time outside your cabin door during boarding and disembarkation, visible to any passerby. Yet most people overlook the personal information exposed on a luggage tag. Use privacy-covered luggage tags to protect your personal details. Use the in-cabin safe for any personal documents. And since most ships are cash-free, there is no need to carry a wallet while on board.</li> <li><strong>A small first-aid kit:</strong> A ship’s medical center is well-equipped but can be expensive. Bring a compact kit with some key basics: pain relievers, rehydration packets, bandages, antibiotic ointment, and clearly marked prescription medications in original containers.</li> <li><strong>Anti-theft daypack while on-shore: </strong>Ports can be crowded and busy. A slash-resistant, RFID-blocking daypack with locking zippers protects your essentials when exploring on land.</li> <li><strong>Flashlight or Small Emergency Torch:</strong> Power outages at sea are rare but not impossible. A tiny flashlight on hand means you can navigate hallways and stairwells safely if needed.</li> </ul> <h2>The Naughty List</h2> <p>Many first-time cruisers assume that what’s fine in a hotel is also fine on a ship, but cruise lines have their own stringent safety rules. Certain everyday items may surprise even seasoned travelers when they are pulled from their luggage during security screening. Here are a few items you should leave at home.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Anything with an open flame:</strong> This includes any type of candle or incense sticks. Fire is the #1 hazard at sea, so cruise lines take a hard stance on these items.</li> <li><strong>Certain pieces of sporting and specialized equipment:</strong> To the surprise of many passengers, you cannot just bring any equipment you want for port days. Some items banned by many cruise lines include bats, skateboards, fishing gear, and, in some cases, drones.</li> <li><strong>Pool toys, large floats, and inflatable loungers:</strong> Space is tight on ship decks, and large floaties are not allowed. Even basic beach balls are banned on some ships because of wind concerns. Within a matter of days following the attack in Kashmir, India began shutting down airports near the Pakistan border, flights were rerouted, and military drills were planned across the country.</p> <p>From contested elections in Tanzania, to deadly riots in the eastern Congo, I’m no stranger to traveling in politically unstable places. Yet, the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan still caught me off-guard. This recent encounter gave me pause on how to prepare for and what to do during civil unrest abroad.</p> <p>The following safety tips can prepare travelers in unstable countries in the event of a worsening situation. </p> <ol> <li><a href="#alerts">Before you go: Sign up for embassy and government alerts</a></li> <li><a href="#consider-insurance">Before you go: Consider travel insurance</a></li> <li><a href="#access">On the trip: Have access to cash, important documents and a charged phone</a></li> <li><a href="#evaluate-situation">During civil unrest: Take a moment to evaluate the situation before acting</a></li> <li><a href="#alert-parties">During civil unrest: Alert essential parties as soon as unrest breaks out</a></li> <li><a href="#low-profile">During civil unrest: Keep a low profile and avoid major tourist sites or protests</a></li> <li><a href="#restrictions">During civil unrest: Stay updated with current events and restrictions</a></li> <li><a href="#go-bag">During civil unrest: Have a to-go bag</a></li> </ol> <h2 id="alerts">1. Before you go: Sign up for embassy and government alerts</h2> <p>While a sudden outbreak of civil unrest is often unpredictable, there a few ways to prepare for the unexpected prior to your trip. To start, research your prospective destination and learn about its current political climate. Is it currently experiencing unrest or are there any upcoming elections that are predicted to be volatile?</p> <p>If so, consider postponing your vacation or changing the destination. Wherever you decide to go, sign up for updates with your local embassy, such as the <a href="https://mytravel.state.gov/s/step">Smart Traveler Enrollment Program</a> in the United States, which sends alerts in the event of political unrest and dangerous weather.</p> <h2 id="consider-insurance">2. Before you go: consider travel insurance</h2> <p>Consider travel insurance for your trip, and research how their Emergency Assistance team could assist you in the case of civil unrest. Does the plan offer evacuations, if needed? Could the team help you with rebooking or offer reimbursement if your trip is interrupted? Read your policy and keep the Emergency Assistance team’s phone number easily accessible. I save it as a contact in my phone; I don’t want to be searching for who to call in a true emergency.</p> <p><em>Travel insurance doesn't cover everything, and coverage may differ depending on the country of residence, state or province. Carefully read the policy wording for a full description of coverage, including the terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described.</em></p> <h2 id="access">3. On the trip: Have access to cash, documents, and phone</h2> <p>You never know when you’ll need to make an emergency phone call, book last minute flights, or leave quickly when traveling in an unstable country. Keep a few basic resources with you that can help you at a moment’s notice, regardless of what the political environment is.</p> <p>I keep these items handy, at all times, when traveling:</p> <ul> <li>Emergency cash in different denominations</li> <li>My passport</li> <li>My phone and a phone charger (or even better, a power bank in case the electricity goes out)</li> <li>My travel insurance documents, with the emergency number highlighted</li> </ul> <h2 id="evaluate-situation">4. During civil unrest: Take a moment to evaluate the situation before acting</h2> <p>Imagine you’re vacationing on the sandy beaches of Zanzibar and suddenly news circulates of mass riots following the election in Tanzania. It’s natural to consider booking the next flight out of town, but before you flee, pause to evaluate the situation. Sometimes it’s best to just hunker down in your hotel while getting all the latest updates. In many instances, rising tensions may deescalate and you won’t find yourself on the road during the chaos.</p> <p>Violence or unrest may be isolated to specific regions or cities, and not impact the location you’re in. Election-related unrest may simmer down—or it could trigger a widespread movement that topples the government. Cross-country attacks may be one-off, or they could escalate into a full-scale war. Evaluate each situation individually and proceed accordingly.</p> <h2 id="alert-parties">5. During civil unrest: Alert essential parties as soon as unrest breaks out</h2> <p>While you don’t always need to take drastic action immediately, there are a few important steps to ensure you’re prepared for what happens next. At the first sign of violence or growing unrest, alert essential parties where you are and of the situation. Inform your embassy, which can assist you with emergency evacuation plans if necessary. If you have travel insurance, call their emergency assistance line as soon as possible, as they may be able to help. Also be sure to let family or friends know where you are; they could assist with gathering information or changing plans.</p> <h2 id="low-profile">6. During civil unrest: Keep a low profile and avoid major tourist sites and protests</h2> <p>Major tourist sites are often targets of attacks. If there’s escalating unrest, stick close to your accommodation until you have a clearer understanding of the situation.</p> <p>Places to avoid during civil unrest:</p> <ul> <li>Crowded markets</li> <li>Popular tourist attractions</li> <li>Metro stations</li> <li>Areas near embassies and government buildings</li> <li>Anywhere with crowds</li> </ul> <p>If there are protests happening, avoid them. Protests could be targeted for attacks, or you may get caught in the crossfire of a violent police response. Foreigners partaking in anti-government protests may also be arrested and treated poorly.</p> <p>Same goes for political discussions, online or offline. Avoid joining in on conversations about regional politics with locals or fellow travelers. Keep a low profile digitally, as well, refraining from criticizing local authorities on social media sites that might bring unwanted attention.</p> <h2 id="restrictions">7. During civil unrest: Stay updated with current events and restrictions</h2> <p>During the onset of a protest movement or following a contested election, governments may issue temporary restrictions. It’s critical you know this information; ask your hotel front desk how best to get the latest updates. Curfews might be mandated, public transportation routes and telecommunications may be suspended or limited, and certain roads or sites could be closed.</p> <h2 id="go-bag">8. During civil unrest: Have a ‘to-go’ bag</h2> <p>In extreme situations, you may need to evacuate your destination. This is hard to prepare for, as each situation is so different. But, you can prepare your ‘go bag’. You don’t want to be hauling a gigantic suitcase around as you are trying to leave an area quickly. Be sure you have a backpack that you can stuff with just the essentials. I’ve car camped in everything from the blazing heat of the Moroccan Sahara to the freezing nights in Norway’s Lofoten Islands, and those extremes taught me one crucial lesson: comfort and safety aren’t optional, they’re essential. I sometimes feel guilty or rude when a man I meet at a café invites me to an event or to a meal, but learning from lessons past, I would rather not find myself in an uncomfortable or compromising situation.</p> <p>On the other hand, I’m much more likely to say yes when a woman or family invites me somewhere. Connecting with friends of friends in a new city or country is another great way to connect with locals and know they’re coming from a trusted mutual friend.</p> <h2 id="6"><strong>Tip 6: Be Smart About Technology </strong></h2> <p>While technology can sometimes pull us out of the moment, it’s also one of the best tools for solo travelers. A smartphone puts everything you need in one place—digital copies of your passport, hotel reservations, maps, and emergency contacts. One of the first things to do upon arrival is to get connected, either with a local SIM or an e-SIM downloaded in advance, which can make navigating from the airport much easier. For longer stays, local plans often offer the best value.</p> <p>It's also wise to plan for limited connectivity. Download offline maps, save emergency contacts, and install local rideshare apps—many countries use alternatives to Uber. Keep key phone numbers on hand, like your accommodation or nearby hospitals, in case of emergency. Managing logistics, safety, and entertainment can feel overwhelming without a second adult sharing the load. You’re the navigator, caregiver, and problem-solver all in one. Plus, balancing your child’s needs with your own desire to explore and unwind isn’t always easy.</p> <p>But traveling solo with your child also brings incredible rewards. You build a deeper bond through shared memories. Problem-solving together fosters resilience and independence for both of you, even when things go off track.</p> <p>My son and I have tackled leeches, mosquitoes, broken luggage, and power outages together. They are some of our favorite travel stories. Best of all, navigating a trip on your terms is empowering, while setting an example of strength and accomplishment for your child.</p> <h2 id="prep">Pre-trip preparation</h2> <p>Impulsive travel is hard when traveling with children, particularly younger kids. This is intensified when you are solo parenting. Ultimately, some preparation will alleviate anxiety and boost your confidence.</p> <h3>Trip planning</h3> <ul> <li>Consider <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/family-travel-how-to-plan-the-perfect-itinerary">putting together an itinerary</a>.</li> <li>Secure accommodation in advance, at least for the first night of your trip, so you can rest upon arrival.</li> <li>Using reputable sources, research neighborhoods where you will be comfortable staying.</li> <li>If you feel intimidated or concerned about transportation, reach out to your hotel to see about arranging a driver to pick you up. The extra set of hands may prove beneficial!</li> <li>Having an international phone plan or SIM ready to go upon landing will provide peace of mind.</li> <li>Note down key emergency phone numbers, including the nearest embassy for your home country, and how to dial for help in the location you're visiting. For example, 999 is the emergency line in the UK, 911 in the US, and within the EU, dialing 112 will connect you to emergency services.</li> </ul> <h3>Important paperwork</h3> <p>Before departure, print out any pertinent paperwork, such as <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/what-is-a-travel-visa">visas</a>, flight details, and a color copy of your passport photo page. Store this in another part of your bag, away from your passport. In the unlikely event that your passport gets misplaced, this will help with replacement.</p> <p>Some locations, including South Africa and some EU countries, require legal evidence that a solo parent has permission to cross borders with a child, without the other parent present. A notarized <a href="https://noplacelikeroam.com/solo-parent-travel-documentation/" target="_blank">legal consent form</a>, granting permission to travel and make any medical decisions, and a notarized copy of a birth certificate are travel essentials.</p> <h3>Medical and safety considerations</h3> <p>Accidents happen. Bring a <a href="https://noplacelikeroam.com/travel-medical-kit-checklist/" target="_blank">travel medical kit</a> with basic medicines and band aids. Keep vaccinations up to date and pack an adequate supply of any <a href="/travel-wiser/wellness/medications-and-travel">prescription medications</a>.</p> <p><em>Planning a family trip? This might be a backpack, sling bag, or crossbody. Be sure that it is locked and <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/baggage">secured from pickpockets</a>.</p> <p>For physical safety, the real work begins before your trip. Establish consistent safety rules at home until they become second nature for your child. Then, follow the same safety rules while traveling, such as holding hands when crossing the street, not wandering off alone, staying together in crowds, and not going into the pool without an adult.</p> <p>You might consider attaching an Air Tag to your child or an ID bracelet, such as <a href="https://www.roadid.com/" target="_blank">Road iD</a>, with parent contact information. Walking harnesses with a leash that can be held or attached to a parent may be controversial, but they can prevent dangerous situations. This is particularly useful for wiggly toddlers or parents handling multiple young children.</p> <p>Ultimately, being aware, prepared, and attentive is the best safety advice.</p> <h3>Finding kid-friendly spaces</h3> <p>There are several apps on the market to help simplify your trip and provide safe and kid-friendly solo-parent travel suggestions. <a href="https://gowhee.com/" target="_blank">GoWhee</a> provides crowd-sourced entries for almost 700,000 playgrounds, accommodations, restaurants, and activities worldwide, updated regularly by traveling parents.</p> <p>Many museums offer child-oriented activities – ask at their check-in desk. Some also have audio guides uniquely tailored to children, such as the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.</p> <p>If you visit US National Parks, ask about the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/kids/become-a-junior-ranger.htm" target="_blank">Junior Ranger program</a>. This is an activity-based program designed to promote engaged learning, conservation, and stewardship. Once the required tasks are completed, children are awarded a park-specific Junior Ranger badge and certificate.</p> <p>Consider hands-on activities, such as a cooking class or guided nature walk, that allow you to engage in new experiences together. Some of our favorites have been a momo-making class in Nepal and a jade-carving class in Guatemala.</p> <p>In a pinch, you can create your own scavenger hunt. If this is your first solo parent trip, consider a weekend getaway not far from home, within your own country, as a trial run.</p> <p>Then, move on to destinations that are easy to navigate, speak the same language as you, and/or offer plenty of kid-friendly activities. Some suggestions would be London, Tokyo, Singapore, <a href="/explore/oceania/fiji/7-things-i-wish-i-knew-before-going-to-fiji">Fiji</a>, or <a href="/explore/central-america/costa-rica/costa-rica-dos-and-donts">Costa Rica</a>.</p> <p>National parks and beach resorts with family amenities also make great low-stress options for first-time solo parent adventures.</p> <h2 id="tours">Solo parent travel tours</h2> <p>Pressed for planning and research time? Organized tours take the stress out of planning by handling logistics and providing built-in support. They offer a chance to connect with other parents and give kids a ready-made group of friends to explore with.</p> <h2 id="sanity">Maintaining your sanity</h2> <p>One of the easiest ways to have a good day? Pack plenty of snacks! No one is crankier than a hungry child (or adult!). Local shops and grocery stores are an easy, budget-friendly way to restock during your trip.</p> <p>Keeping a balance between organized time and unstructured time will also help your travel as a single parent go smoother.</p> <p>Like any other travel experience, set realistic timelines and expectations, and be flexible. You’ve spent a lot of money and effort on these clothes, and you absolutely need them to arrive at the same destination as you, at the same time, and in great condition. Don’t risk them getting <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/baggage">lost, delayed, damaged, or stolen</a> by checking them in on a flight.</p> <p>Plus, can you imagine what your suit or wedding dress would look like after a few trips around the baggage carousel at Arrivals?</p> <p>As you’ll probably have accessories, such as a bag, shoes, and jewelry, to go with your outfit, take those as carry-on too.</p> <h2 id="prepare">Preparing to travel with a wedding dress or suit</h2> <p>It’s a good idea to let your airline know in advance if you’re traveling with a bulky item such as wedding dress, suit, or hat box, to be sure there will be room in a closet or storage locker. Most airlines will do their best to accommodate you, but they can’t promise there will be space.</p> <p>Otherwise, you might consider upgrading your seat to ensure hanging space in a more premium cabin, buying a second seat (if the airline allows this), or paying more for early boarding to guarantee room in an overhead bin close to your seat. You don’t want to get this far and then have another traveler’s bag crush your clothes.</p> <p>Remember, your wedding dress will be counted in your allotment for carry-on luggage and may be subject to size and weight restrictions, or you might have to pay a fee.</p> <h2 id="suit">How to pack a suit when you travel</h2> <p>Whether you’re traveling with a suit for business or pleasure, use a proper garment bag to transport it. They are usually sturdy, with hangers for jackets, pants, and shirts, and often fold in half to be zipped up and made more portable. On board the flight, you can unzip the bag to allow the suit and shirts to hang down if there’s a closet available.</p> <p>If you don’t have a garment bag and must pack your suit in a case or duffel bag, you have a couple of options.</p> <ul> <li>With the suit on a hanger, put it inside a plastic dry-cleaning bag, fold it in half and put it on the top of the other clothes in your luggage.</li> <li>If you’re travelling with a smaller bag, turn the shoulders of the jacket inside out and fold the jacket in half vertically so the lapels touch, then lay it flat and fold it into thirds.</li> <li>On arrival, unfold and turn the shoulders back out again.</li> </ul> <p>If it’s not a long-haul flight, you could also consider wearing the suit pants, and either folding the jacket in half to be laid flat in the overhead locker on top of any luggage or laid flat over your lap.</p> <p><em>Planning a destination wedding? However, if you fold it the right way, you can minimize wrinkles.</p> <ul> <li>Lay the shirt flat on a table, buttoned, front side down.</li> <li>Cross the sleeves across the back to form an X, and then fold each sleeve up so the cuff touches the collar.</li> <li>Fold the shirt in thirds lengthwise, bringing the shoulders in towards the center. When traveling with your wedding dress, this garment bag will come in handy. Your dress must go through security, on a dirty conveyor belt, as well as into an airplane overhead locker or closet which might not be clean, so make sure the bag is waterproof and sturdy enough to withstand being moved around.</p> <p>Ask the sales assistant to show you how to fold the dress to keep it as wrinkle-free as possible. Also, check that the garment can tolerate steaming or ironing and ask for any fabric-specific tips on how to get rid of wrinkles on arrival.</p> <h2 id="unpack">How to make your clothes look great when you unpack</h2> <p>Unpack your dress, shirt, or suit as soon as you arrive at your accommodation and hang it up to let any wrinkles fall out naturally which will usually happen overnight. If time is of the essence, your hotel room may have a steamer or iron, or a concierge service that can arrange that for you. Take half the clothes you think you will need...you won’t need as much as you think. It’s OK to wear the same t-shirt a few days in a row.</p> <p>But bring extra socks! You’ll lose a bunch to laundry gremlins, wear and tear, and hiking so packing extra will come in handy. Take a few more than you need. Trust me on this.</p> <p><a href="https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/packing/" target="_blank">Read my post for a complete list of what I pack</a>.</p> <h2 id="hostels">Stay in hostels</h2> <p>They are cheap, they organize events, you’ll meet a lot of people, and they are just tons of fun! <a href="https://www.hostelworld.com/" target="_blank">Hostelworld</a> is the best hostel-accommodation site out there, with the largest inventory, best search interface, and highest availability. I use it for all my hostel bookings.</p> <p><a href="https://www.nomadicmatt.com/best-hostels/" target="_blank">Here's my list of all my favorite hostels around the world</a> broken down by city.</p> <h2 id="center">Always visit the local tourism information center</h2> <p>This is probably one of the most underused travel tips in the world. Tourism information centers know about everything going on in town. They can point you to free activities, special events happening during your stay, and everything in between. They are also staffed by locals who can tell you all the ins and outs of their city.</p> <p>Plus, they often offer city tourism cards that can get you into multiple attractions for one set price, saving you a lot of money if you’re going to do a lot of sightseeing. Don’t skip them!</p> <h2 id="walking">Take free walking tours</h2> <p>Besides being free, these tours will give you a good orientation and background of the city you are visiting. I love, love, love taking walking tours when I travel. You pass the time, you get to pepper the guide with questions, and you get to learn so much about where you are. They have exploded in popularity in the last few years and you can find them in pretty much any major city in the world.</p> <h2 id="ask">Ask hostel staff for information — even when you aren’t staying there</h2> <p>Hostel staff deal with budget travelers all day, every day. They know exactly where to go for cheap meals and attractions. They also tend to be locals so they know the city very well. Ask them for all sorts of information. Even if you aren't staying in one, just pop in and ask for help. They'll usually give it.</p> <h2 id="lock">Always carry a lock</h2> <p>Carry a small combination lock with you when you travel. They come in handy, especially when you stay in dorms. Most hostels use lockers, so budget travelers need to provide their own travel lock to keep stuff secured. While you can usually rent or buy them at hostels, it's much cheaper just to buy one before you go. (Just don't use one with keys because if you lose the keys, you're screwed!)</p> <h2 id="block">Follow the “5 Block” Rule</h2> <p>Don’t eat within five blocks of a major tourist attraction or area! Walk in any direction and search for a place to eat when you hit five blocks. There’s an invisible line at five blocks and most tourists don’t go past it. Once you do, all of a sudden you’ll notice that the crowds are gone, the menus stop being listed in multiple languages, and the prices come down.</p> <p>Sure, you might find a good meal in a tourist area, but you’ll find a better, cheaper meal outside it. Go where the menus aren’t in multiple languages. Go to those little, tiny <a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/participation/eat-like-a-local-when-you-travel">hole-in-the-wall places</a> that you are unsure about. The meal might not knock your socks off every time but it will be a memorable and more local experience.</p> <h2 id="tech">Use technology to meet locals</h2> <p>Use sharing-economy websites to connect with the locals. The sharing economy has changed the way people travel, allowing you to make new friends, get off the tourist trail, and save mega money by going directly to the people. It's a triple win – and I use these resources all the time when I travel. Some of my favorite companies are Couchsurfing, Find a Travel Buddy Facebook Group, BlaBlaCar, and EatWith.</p> <h2 id="bottle">Take a reusable water bottle</h2> <p>Single-use plastics are common in a lot of countries around the world. They're also <a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/planet/how-to-reduce-plastic-use-while-you-travel">polluting our oceans and destroying the environment</a>. Drink from the tap when you can – you’ll save money and help the environment. If you're going somewhere where you can't drink the water, be sure to get a water bottle with a filter. <a href="https://lifestraw.com/" target="_blank">LifeStraw</a> is my favorite company for this.</p> <h2 id="insurance">Consider travel insurance</h2> <p>Travel insurance is the most important thing to get that you never want to use. If something goes wrong, you don’t want to be out thousands of dollars in bills. Travel insurance can help cover you if you <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/baggage">get robbed</a>, your<a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/cancellation"> flights get canceled</a>, you <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/overseas-medical">get sick or injured</a>, or <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/medical-repatriation">have to be sent home</a>. For just a few dollars a day, it’s one of the best investments you can make for a trip.</p> <p>You may think you’re superman/woman but so did my friend who broke her arm, didn't have insurance, and had to pay thousands out of pocket. Insurance was there when I had to replace my camera and when I popped an eardrum scuba diving! You should definitely consider it.</p> <p>If you’re traveling multiple times a year, be sure to look into an <a href="/usa/travel-insurance/whats-covered/annual-multi-trip">annual travel insurance plan</a>. I had to learn how to travel with cash because I would go for months at a time, carrying enough to pay for accommodations, activities, transportation, and food. Once, I ran out of money after a three-month trip and had to ask a friend in Mexico to book my flight out of Cuba.</p> <p>Carrying large amounts of money can be inconvenient at best – and dangerous at worst – so I developed several strategies for traveling with cash while minimizing risk. Years later, I still rely on these strategies to get through trips where cash is king.</p> <ul> <li><a href="#why">Why travel with cash?</a></li> <li><a href="#how">How to travel safely with cash</a></li> <li><a href="#other">Other ways to be money smart</a></li> </ul> <h2 id="why">Why travel with cash?</h2> <p>In some destinations, such as very remote areas, there may be no other option. But even if you can use credit cards, there are still a lot of benefits to carrying cash.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Have a backup for emergencies:</strong> Cash is nearly always accepted so it’s often the best form of payment for housing, medical, and other emergencies, particularly in remote areas.</li> <li><strong>Cash for small purchases and tips:</strong> Paying for small purchases and gratuities with cash is often quicker and easier than negotiating with credit cards.</li> <li><strong>Cash is preferred some places:</strong> In some destinations, there is a strong preference for cash and merchants may require a large minimum amount to use a credit card, or they simply may offer a discount on cash purchases.</li> <li><strong>Inability to access your bank account:</strong> Even if you should technically have access to your bank account, unsecure internet connections and malware threats could block access when traveling.</li> <li><strong>Limited access to banks or ATMS:</strong> Even if a country has ATMs that accept your bank cards, they may be few and far between, or charge exorbitant withdrawal fees.</li> </ul> <h2 id="how">How to travel safely with cash</h2> <p>Regardless of where you’re going, some strategies apply across the board. Here are my top tips.</p> <h3>How much cash are you allowed to travel with?</h3> <p>The amount varies from country to country, so check the rules related to your destination before your trip to avoid being hit with fines. Now, knowing how much cash you’re allowed to travel with is different from determining exactly how much you should bring. Just because you’re allowed to travel with $5,000 doesn’t mean you <em>need</em> to travel with that much. Determine what daily and total expenses you anticipate needing to pay for with cash and bring a bit extra for emergencies.</p> <h3>Where is the safest place to keep cash when traveling?</h3> <p>I’ve found that the safest place to store my cash is everywhere. Money belts are a popular way to keep cash safe (tucked under your shirt, of course), but if a <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/baggage">pickpocket makes off with it</a>, you’ll be out of luck if you kept everything in that one place. Personally, I like to distribute my cash among various places, such as:</p> <ul> <li>In several inner pockets of my backpack</li> <li>Zippered sections of my toiletries bag</li> <li>Inside my hip pouch</li> <li>Rolled up in socks</li> <li>Between pages in books</li> <li>Folded into souvenirs</li> </ul> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/traveling-with-cash-belt-bag.jpg" alt="A traveler wears a belt bag across her body." /> <figcaption>A cross-body bag or money belt can help keep your cash safe – but it's still best not to store it all in one place. If you’re staying at a hotel with a safe, store your extra cash in the safe and only carry with you what you need for the day.</p> <p>In Cuba, most of the private houses I stayed in didn’t have proper safes so I sometimes asked the owner to hold my money for me. To minimize risk for both of us, the owner would draw up a receipt stating how much cash they were holding and we would both sign it. While this strategy could have negative consequences, I never had a bad experience.</p> <h3>What to do if your cash is lost or stolen</h3> <p>Once you’ve checked and rechecked everywhere that your missing cash may be, sit down and figure out how much money you’ll need for the rest of your trip. If you can’t get by with credit cards or bank cards, contact friends or family at home to see if they could wire money to you through a local bank or Western Union, or if they could pre-pay any remaining expenses you have like unbooked hotels.</p> <h2 id="other">Other ways to be money smart </h2> <p>Savvy travelers should consider all financial transactions, including those made with credit cards, pre-paid cash cards, banking apps, and travel bank accounts.</p> <h3>What is the safest way to pay when traveling?</h3> <p>Paying with cash is often safer than paying with credit cards or banking apps, which are inherently susceptible to fraud, but traveling with large amounts of cash that could be stolen presents its own threat.</p> <p>To avoid having to pay for everything with cash in the destination, try to prepay large expenses like accommodations, meals (which are sometimes included with hotel reservations), and activities beforehand. Traveling with a group tour can also help, as these pre-paid trips typically include most large expenses.</p> <p><em>Planning an overseas adventure? Find out <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered">how travel insurance can cover</a> lost or stolen baggage, sudden illness, trip cancellation, or other mishaps.</em></p> <h3>Traveling with credit cards</h3> <p>Keep your credit cards safe by keeping them close to your body, be it in a money belt, front-facing waist belt, or deep front pocket. Up the security even more by storing credit cards in a tamper-proof, RFID-blocking wallet.</p> <p>Should you be the victim of theft, know how to report a stolen credit card without actually having your card in front of you. If someone stole your wallet, you can no longer look for the 1-800 number on the back of your card so keep that number stored inside your phone, a digital calendar, or even within an email for easy access.</p> <p>In countries where credit cards are rarely accepted, there may be a workaround app. For instance, in Bhutan, the Department of Tourism endorses the <a href="https://bnb.bt/mypay/" target="_blank">MyPay app</a>, a mobile wallet app where you can link your international credit cards to use across the country.</p> <h3>Traveling with a pre-paid cash card</h3> <p>Some countries offer pre-paid cash cards specific to that country (like Cuba does), but for cards that go beyond the boundaries of a single country, look into pre-paid international travel cards.</p> <p>Like credit cards, pre-paid international travel cards eliminate the need to carry a lot of cash. They can be used at hotels, restaurants, and shops, and some include chip and PIN capabilities that enable them to be used at international ATMs or to be cancelled and replaced if stolen.</p> <p>These cards can help with budgeting and fraud protection, but they also typically cost more, be it through foreign transaction fees or fees associated with recouping any remaining money not spent overseas. Also note that some of these multi-currency cards only work in certain countries and with certain currencies, so confirm all the details before you buy them.</p> <h3>Travel bank accounts</h3> <p>Creating a separate bank account just for withdrawing money during your trip can be a smart way to save money for vacation and then minimize risk abroad. Should the bank account be hacked, criminals would only have access to funds in that account, and not your main savings account.</p> <p>Here is what to look for when setting up a travel bank account:</p> <ul> <li>Minimal fees (monthly and per-transaction)</li> <li>Number of ATMs you’ll have access to</li> <li>ATM fee reimbursements</li> <li>Contactless debit card, which is an increasingly popular way to pay abroad</li> <li>Comprehensive mobile and online banking experiences, including the ability to disable your debit card from the banking app if you’re a victim of fraud</li> <li>Interest rates</li> </ul>Getty Images / FluxFactory 11402476608 Getty Images Two travelers pay cash for a meal at a night market in Thailand.

It will apply to residents from more than 60 countries who have previously been able to cross the border visa-free.</p> <p>The ETIAS travel authorization <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/what-is-a-travel-visa">is not a visa</a> – it’s more like a visa-waiver and is linked <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-renew-your-passport">to your passport</a>. If granted, this visa-waiver will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.</p> <p>With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, a traveler can stay in the European country requiring ETIAS for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Keep in mind, having an ETIAS travel authorization does not guarantee entry to those countries. You will still need to meet the other entry requirements a specific country may have.</p> <h2 id="when">When will ETIAS start?</h2> <p>The official start date has changed multiple times, but ETIAS is due to start after the <a href="https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/what-ees_en" target="_blank">Entry/Exit System (EES)</a> is launched. EES is an automated system for registering non-EU nationals who are entering the EU for a short stay.</p> <h2 id="how">How to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization</h2> <p>Travelers will be asked to apply via the official ETIAS website or mobile app. Each applicant will undergo a detailed security check to determine their status for entry into any of the Schengen Zone countries. In many cases, applications are processed within minutes, but it can take up to 14 days if more information is requested, or up to 30 days if an interview is required.</p> <p>Application for most travelers costs €7.</p> <p><em>Planning a European adventure? Residents from some countries or territories may need to provide specific or additional travel documents.</p> <h2 id="require">Countries that will require ETIAS for entry</h2> <p>The 30 European countries that will require travelers to hold a valid ETIAS upon arrival at their borders are:</p> <p>Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.</p> <h2 id="benefits">Benefits of ETIAS</h2> <p>ETIAS works to identify any security threats by gathering information and updating data relating to a specific visitor to determine their suitability for entry in the EU.</p> <p>It was designed by the EU to address terrorism and migration issues, tightening up borders and working to make travel within the member countries safer.</p> <p>Along with decreasing security concerns and detecting potential threats, it is expected that the new ETIAS will also help:</p> <ul> <li>Reduce procedures and application times</li> <li>Improve the management of EU country borders</li> <li>Assist in detecting and decreasing crime and terrorism</li> <li>Impede irregular migration</li> <li>Reinforce the visa liberalization policy of the EU</li> </ul> <h2 id="eta">ETA: New entry requirement for the UK</h2> <p>The UK will not require an ETIAS travel authorization for entry. But <strong>as of January 8, 2025</strong>, travelers visiting the UK w<a href="https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta" target="_blank">ill need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)</a>. This applies to all travelers (including babies and children) visiting for less than six months.</p> <p>The ETA acts as a pre-clearance for travel. It’s valid for two years and covers multiple trips. Applications can be made <a href="https://apply-for-an-eta.homeoffice.gov.uk/apply/electronic-travel-authorisation/easier-on-the-app" target="_blank">via the UK ETA app</a> (strongly encouraged) or online. Processing takes around three working days, sometimes longer, so don’t wait until the last minute. It is a federal standard for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards designed to strengthen the security of IDs used for key purposes such as air travel and access to certain federal facilities.</p> <p>All 50 US states, as well as Washington DC and the US territories of Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands, are issuing REAL IDs. </p> <h2 id="why">Why is REAL ID now required?</h2> <p>The US government has set new federal standards for driver’s licenses and ID cards that are more consistent and secure.</p> <p>The switch to this new form of ID was mandated by <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/real-id/about-real-id" target="_blank">the REAL ID act</a>, passed by Congress in 2005 in response to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission. The law was originally supposed to be implemented in 2008 but has been pushed back numerous times due to logistical challenges and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the time for enforcement has finally come, as of May 2025. Without it, you may now face additional screenings, delays, or charges.</p> <h2 id="how">How do I get REAL ID?</h2> <p>You can get REAL ID at your local driver’s licensing agency (DMV, BMV, etc.). The documents you’ll need vary from state to state but at minimum, they include documentation that shows:</p> <ul> <li>Full legal name</li> <li>Date of birth</li> <li>Social Security Number</li> <li>Two proofs of your current address</li> <li>Lawful status (whether you are lawfully authorized to live permanently within the US)</li> </ul> <p>Visit the website of <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/real-id" target="_blank">your local DMV</a> to find out if further documents are required.</p> <p>It’s also highly recommended to make an appointment for your license renewal.</p> <p><em>Planning a domestic trip? This confirms your identity so you can still fly, but it takes extra time and costs money.</p> <h2 id="passport">Can I use a passport or other forms of ID instead?</h2> <p>A passport is an <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification" target="_blank">acceptable alternative</a> to REAL ID. For domestic travel you will need REAL ID or a passport, but not both.</p> <p>But you can’t use REAL ID for international travel. If so, your card will have a small gold or black star in one of the upper corners (or a bear, if you’re a California resident). In that case, you’re all set.</p> <p>If you aren’t due for renewal for a while and don’t want to go through the process right now, you can use your passport instead. Pets are our companions – members of the family, really – so it’s natural to want to take them along on vacation. But is it practical, let alone desirable for the pets?</p> <p>When I inherited a cat from a suburban garden in Paris around 2014, I was immediately faced with the challenge of traveling with her back to my then home in Germany.</p> <p>The trip was by car. It was a nightmare, but we survived. Cupcake, as I christened her, was not accustomed to travel, at already around 8 years old. She did not take to my idea of giving her a breath of fresh air en route in the Champagne vineyards, attached to a cat leash (what was I thinking?), and my partner and I still bear the scars today.</p> <p>The situation was a far cry from friends who regularly travel around Europe with their cat sitting on their lap in the front passenger seat. But they started out early. Whether a dog or a cat, if you want to make good travel companions out of them, you must train them to travel while they’re young. But it still doesn't guarantee they will enjoy <a href="/travel-insurance/activities/road-trip">a road trip</a>, let alone flying.</p> <p>Cupcake became a seasoned, though not super enthusiastic, traveler over time. As a journalist and travel writer, I was shooting off to many places with her. But all of them were across a land border, not overseas. Some carriers, like American Airlines, don’t allow pets as carry-on to Europe – even though they do at home. <a href="https://www.delta.com/us/en/pet-travel/international-connection-pet-travel?srsltid=AfmBOopcAI3fJZpPkOX9K4diJDsSSA9FFDVwwExyfWHSFtrqqNG4UEvp" target="_blank">Delta</a> makes no exceptions for Transatlantic flights. But like many airlines, it has other rules such as maximum pet size – or minimum age – kennel dimensions. and the number of pets accepted on each flight.</p> <p>“We have a first-come, first-serve policy for pets in the cabin,” <a href="https://www.delta.com/us/en/pet-travel/overview" target="_blank">Delta says</a>. The fee is $200 one-way.</p> <p><a href="https://wwws.airfrance.us/information/passagers/voyager-avec-son-animal-chien-chat" target="_blank">Air France</a> puts any pet that weighs over 8kg/17.5lb in its carrier in the hold, as does <a href="https://www.lufthansa.com/au/en/animals-excess-baggage" target="_blank">Lufthansa</a>. So check the fine print of your airline’s pet policies and fees before jumping in. <a href="https://www.alaskaair.com/content/travel-info/policies/pets-traveling-international?srsltid=AfmBOopOmHHehxcTgAOx1Kgg1RVPKJk86Vi5QRjCp_DY__vHtaLcwh5T" target="_blank">Alaska Airlines</a> will take your pets to Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas, among other places, but not to Belize or Guatemala, and recommends against Costa Rica travels because of the risk of screwworm.</p> <h2 id="stress">Is it stressful for pets to fly?</h2> <p>Animal organizations advise against non-essential air travel for pets. But plenty of globetrotting dogs out there are ready to prove them wrong. Near or far, by plane, train, or car, one of the key considerations when deciding to journey with your pet will be whether they like it. Both dogs and cats will soon let you know with their behavior and body language.</p> <p>Partly, it’s trial and error. I learned in time how to make car trips more comfortable for Cupcake, dealing with the motion sickness – the drooling, meowing, and pooping – with cat-calming treatments.</p> <p>Vets say time-zone changes, noisy airports, and changes in diet and medications can make air travel stressful for your pets. Add to that confinement on the plane and altitude and pressure acclimatization.</p> <p>Consult your vet as to what is best for your pet. You will also want to research the availability and quality of vet services at your destination.</p> <p>Some people turn to pet travel consultants and transport services to make all the travel arrangements. But these are primarily for relocating, not vacationing, with pets. Others who can afford it choose charter options for flying with pets.</p> <h2 id="transport">Traveling with pets on trains and other public transport</h2> <p>Once you get to your European destination, <a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/participation/the-return-of-train-travel">train travel</a> with your pet will be a relative breeze, as will public transport, though it depends on which country.</p> <p>Cupcake and I traveled regularly on the European rail network. Usually, I had to pay her way – around €15 a trip. Again, you must check the national rail at your intended destination for rules about cage size, animal weight, the need for leashes and muzzles, and bans on some dog breeds.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/pets/traveling-with-pets-train.jpg" alt="A man sits with his dachshund on his lap on a train in England." /> <figcaption>Traveling on Europe's rail network with pets is relatively easy. Image credit: Getty Images / SolStock</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="car">How to travel with a dog in a car</h2> <p>If you fancy taking your pooch on an international road trip, see how they take to car travel at home first. And prep well with the right travel gear – food, water, a dog seat belt and safey harness, and a booster seat <span>– </span>to keep your dog comfortable and protected. An unrestrained dog can cause distractions and could be seriously injured (or injure the driver or passengers) in an accident.</p> <p>Also, plan on potty stops or take along portable pet toilets or pee pads – and any required meds for anxiety or nausea.</p> <p>If traveling with a cat, similar harnesses and car seat belts are available (assuming your cat will tolerate a harness), or your kitty can ride in a hard-sided carrier, seat-belted into the back seat. For longer trips, you can place a litter box in the carrier, but the best option is to limit trips to a four or five-hour maximum each day.</p> <h2 id="rules">International travel with pets: rules and requirements</h2> <h3>Traveling with pets in Europe</h3> <p>The processes and paperwork for an American or Brazilian pet-cationing across continents to Europe are much the same as for a German on holiday with their pets in France. The EU rules for traveling with pets – specifically dogs, cats, and ferrets – apply to travel from outside the EU as well as within.</p> <p>EU residents need an <a href="https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/pets-and-other-animals/index_en.htm#inline-nav-3" target="_blank">EU Pet Passport</a> for their pet – which you can get from any authorized vet. The vet will check that your pet meets all the requirements: that it's been microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. A pet passport is valid for life as long as your pet's health information and vaccinations remain up to date.</p> <p>If traveling from a non-EU country or territory, your pet will need an <a href="https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/pets-and-other-animals/index_en.htm#inline-nav-4" target="_blank">EU animal health certificate</a> – this must be issued by a vet in the departure country no more than 10 days before your pet's arrival in Europe. It is valid for travel between EU countries for four months.</p> <p>There may be other health rules depending on the country you're coming from – and going to. For example, if you're headed to Finland, Norway, Malta, or Ireland with your pooch, it must be treated for tapeworm infection one to five days before traveling.</p> <p>The <a href="https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/pets-and-other-animals/index_en.htm" target="_blank">EU's Europa website</a> has a handy tool for checking travel requirements by country. All the necessary treatments are ticked off on your pet's passport or EU animal health certificate.</p> <p>There are set <a href="https://food.ec.europa.eu/animals/movement-pets/travellers-points-entry_en" target="_blank">points of entry</a> you must arrive at with your pets, but these are basically at every international airport in Europe. While many people report that authorities don’t end up checking their pet’s documents, they all advise sticking to the rules – apart from anything else, it’s not worth the risk of being turned back.</p> <h3>Where can I travel with my pets?</h3> <p>Many countries have similar rules to Europe for traveling with pets – microchips, rabies vaccinations, and pet ID. And that includes road trips between the <a href="https://www.aaa.com/pettravel/pet-travel-tips/Traveling-Between-the-United-States-and-Canada-When-You-Have-a-Pet#:~:text=U.S.%20citizens%20taking%20pet%20cats,number%20and%20lot%20expiration%20date." target="_blank">US and Canada</a> (the rules are less strict for Canadians visiting the US). If you have a place in mind, you need to immediately check the requirements for taking pets.</p> <p>For some pet owners, there are definitely no-go countries – eliminated because of their distance as much as the difficulty of getting pets in. Australia is one of them unless you're coming from New Zealand and some other nearby islands. Even “<a href="https://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-trade/cats-dogs" target="_blank">compliant animals</a>”, says the Government, which meet all the health conditions, will undertake “a minimum” 10-day quarantine when arriving from the UK, US, or <a href="https://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-trade/cats-dogs/how-to-import/step-by-step-guides#group-3-country-cats-and-dogs" target="_blank">other Group 3 countries</a>. Whoops, there goes the vacation.</p> <p>Bali and Jamaica are among the many other destinations with prohibitive quarantine times and costs for pet travel.</p> <p><em>Heading off on an adventure? After all, you’re not just going to dump your bags and pooch and go sightseeing, are you? Colombia, Brazil, India, and Chile top the list, followed by Austria, the UK, the US, Mexico, and Switzerland.</p> <h2 id="options">Travel with pets: weighing the options</h2> <p>If you want your pets to tag along, you might have to tailor the trip to them, and perhaps consider sticking closer to home.</p> <p>Sure, we can get stressed about leaving our pets behind – and they can get anxious about their owners leaving. However, the stress and hassles of traveling overseas may outweigh those problems.</p> <p>In the end, we have to listen to our pets. When traveling, we really don’t need as much as we think we do. And worst-case scenario, you can do laundry or buy what you forgot to pack.</p> <p>But if you want to be practical and travel light, you have to make some tough decisions.</p> <p>Shoes? At most you need:</p> <ul> <li>a pair of sneakers or hiking shoes</li> <li>a pair of flip flops or sandals</li> <li>something that can be dressed up or down as needed, whether sneakers, heels, or something in between</li> </ul> <p>No more than that.</p> <p>Likewise with toiletries. Liquids are heavy, so be a toiletries minimalist. Bring only what you need, in travel-sized bottles. Unless you’re camping or staying in super cheap hostels, your accommodation will have soap, shampoo, conditioner, and a hair dryer. You’ll survive a few weeks without all the lotions and potions you’re used to at home. Just bring the basics.</p> <p><a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/participation/how-to-only-travel-with-hand-luggage">Pack like you’re carrying on</a>, even if you plan to check. They help you organize your stuff into compartments, which makes things easier to find and makes re-packing much easier. Cubes come in multiple sizes. To make the most of the space in your bag, you shouldn’t have a lot of empty space. Roll up socks and put them in your spare pair of shoes, which go in their own packing cube or pouch. If your suitcase has rails for the retractable handle, line either side with sleepwear or gym clothes (things you don’t mind being squished on the bottom).</p> <p>Use your packing cubes to create a puzzle that all fits together. Made from the wool of sheep that graze in high country, merino wool is super fine, breathable, <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-choose-the-right-hiking-gear#socks">moisture-wicking, odor-resistant</a> and not itchy. It’s not cheap but investing in a few pieces is worth it. Because of its odor resistance, you can wear a merino garment several times before it needs to be washed. That means you can pack a lot less. l pack a few merino T-shirts and long sleeves, and layer them as needed.</p> <p>100% merino products are more expensive than blends, but the higher the merino content the better the garment. Brands like Icebreaker, Smartwool, Kathmandu, and Macpac are reliable. Be careful with online marketplaces advertising pure merino for $20 – that’s too good to be true.</p> <p><em>Planning an epic adventure? If not, switch the unmatchable things out for things that do match.</p> <h2 id="list">Essentials packing list</h2> <p>Do not leave home without:</p> <ul> <li>Researching the destination. Are you traveling during wet season and need rain gear? Will you need a <a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/participation/respectful-travel">headscarf for mosques, temples, or churches</a>?</li> <li>A wrist or crossbody/neck strap for your phone</li> <li>A scarf or neck gaiter to keep you warm on the plane and protect your neck from sun and wind</li> <li>Flip flops or sandals in case of a gross shower or hotel room carpet</li> <li>A lightweight windbreaker-like layer that can be rolled up and stuffed in the bottom of your bag</li> <li>A headlamp, even if you’re not camping. I pretty much travel full-time so there’s never a convenient moment for me to renew my passport, especially when I’m getting close to my last page in the book. Being without a passport always leaves me feeling a bit nervous – how long will the new one take? Will it arrive within the estimated time and therefore, in time for my next scheduled international trip?</p> <p>I finally bit the bullet and renewed my almost-full passport at the beginning of this year. It felt safer to renew it when I was back stateside and still had a few pages left rather than risk filling it up while being on the road. The expedited mail-in option was straightforward and arrived in less time than anticipated – which is not guaranteed to be the case but was a relief for this nomadic traveler.</p> <ul> <li><a href="#when">How long is a passport good for and when should I renew mine?</a></li> <li><a href="#what">What do I need to do to renew my passport? </a></li> <li><a href="#how">How long does it take to renew your passport? </a></li> <li><a href="#expired">How to get a new passport if your current passport is expired</a></li> <li><a href="#lost">What is the process if my passport is lost or stolen?</a></li> <li><a href="#abroad">How to renew your passport from abroad</a></li> <li><a href="#non-us">How to renew your passport if you’re not a US resident </a></li> </ul> <h2 id="when">How long is a passport good for and when should I renew mine?</h2> <p>There are a few reasons to renew your passport: it's about to expire, your pages are full, or you’ve lost your passport. Passports are typically good for ten years if you're 16 or older when it's issued. However, in the US, UK, and Canada, passports are only valid for five years if you are under 16 (under 15 in Australia).</p> <p>Without any special circumstances such as a <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/stolen-passports">lost, stolen, or damaged passport</a> (accidents do happen!), you should renew yours when it’s either about six months from expiration or close to being full.</p> <p>Many countries won’t let you in if you have less than six months before your passport expires – which is why you should keep a close eye on the expiration date. It won’t be a fun surprise to board a flight and be denied entry for your planned vacation! (Also, if you have to cancel your trip because of an expired passport, the <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/cancellation">cancellation likely won't be covered by travel insurance</a>.)</p> <p>If you fill up your pages before the ten years are up, you will need to apply for a new passport earlier than the expiration date. Keep in mind that many countries require two to four blank pages for entry /exit stamps and visas. Some airlines won’t let you board, and some countries won’t allow you to enter without a few blank pages. Unfortunately, adding extra pages to your passport is no longer an option so if it’s getting close to full, it is best to renew your passport as soon as possible.</p> <p>If you don’t have special circumstances to consider, there are a few basic steps to follow to get your next passport in hand.</p> <h2 id="what">What do I need to do to renew my passport?</h2> <p>For US citizens, there are three ways to renew your passport: by mail, in person, or online. All these start at the US Department of State’s <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports.html" target="_blank">passport section</a>.</p> <h3>Renewing online</h3> <p>Renewing online has only recently become available and is currently in the process of a trial stage. If you meet the <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew-online.html#Step%20One" target="_blank">necessary requirements as listed on the US Department of State’s website</a>, online renewal might be the most convenient option for you. Online renewal works for tourist passports. Unfortunately, diplomatic passports and other special issuances don’t qualify for online renewal, and you must have the passport in hand (i.e. it hasn’t been lost or stolen). American citizens living outside of the US are ineligible for the online process.</p> <p>Once you verify that you are eligible to renew your passport online, you can <a href="https://mytravel.state.gov/s/?utm_source=web&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=Renew%20Online%20TSG&utm_id=Renew%20Online%20TSG" target="_blank">create your account</a> and start your application. You will need a new photo, which can be uploaded online in the application system.</p> <p>Because the online system is in the testing stage, online application slots are only available in limited slots at midday eastern time each day. You can try another day if you can’t start your application on that day – or simply renew by mail instead.</p> <h3>Renewing by mail</h3> <p>Another way to renew your passport is by mail. This is a great option if you don’t meet all the requirements for online renewal, or if you want to expedite the process. Once you confirm that you<a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew.html#Step%20One" target="_blank"> meet the requirements</a>, you can download the application, fill it out, and print it. Along with your completed form, you’ll also need to mail in a photo and your current passport.</p> <h3>Renewing in person</h3> <p><a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/get-fast/passport-agencies.html" target="_blank">Renewing your passport in person</a> should be your last option and is saved for emergency cases. You must make an appointment at a passport agency. If you are traveling within 14 calendar days, you can book an appointment at a passport center to renew your passport. However, if you’ll also need a foreign visa for your trip, then your appointment will have to be within 28 days of your trip.</p> <h3>Next steps</h3> <p>Regardless of the renewal method you choose, you will need to take a new photo. Make sure your <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/photos.html" target="_blank">photo meets the requirements</a>, such as being a color photo and taken within the last 6 months.</p> <p>The cost to renew your passport book is USD $130. This can fluctuate during popular travel times, such as over the winter and summer holidays. You need to consider the mailing time as well, which isn’t included in the 6-8 week estimate and can add at least a few days. The Department of State <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/processing-times.html" target="_blank">updates current renewal times</a>.</p> <p>If your passport renewal is super time sensitive, you can select the expedited passport renewal service, which takes an estimated 2-3 weeks. Remember that expedited services are only available via mail-in renewal and cost an additional $60.</p> <h2 id="expired">How to get a new passport if your current passport is expired</h2> <p>Renewing an expired passport is straightforward and not too different from the regular process. However, if your passport was issued more than 15 years ago – meaning that it expired five or more years ago – you aren’t eligible to renew your passport. The first thing you should do is report your lost passport, which can be done online, by mail, or in person when you’re replacing your passport. If your lost passport is also expired, there is no need to report it because it isn’t valid for international travel.</p> <p>If you report your missing passport online, the system will also give you the option to apply for a new passport, directly linking you to the forms to fill out. In limited circumstances, you may also apply for an emergency passport, which is valid for one year or less. Emergency passports are issued in circumstances like having your passport stolen.</p> <h2 id="abroad">How to renew your passport from abroad</h2> <p>The process to apply for a new passport if you’re outside the US differs from country to country. In most cases, you’ll need to apply in person at the US embassy or consulate. Check the <a href="https://www.usembassy.gov/" target="_blank">US embassy page</a> for the country from which you’ll be applying for country-specific details.</p> <p>If you’re applying from Canada, you can skip the trip to the embassy and apply via mail. This applies in both cases of standard and expedited passport renewals.</p> <p>The process is the same whether you’re simply traveling abroad or living abroad as a resident of another country.</p> <h2 id="non-us">How to renew your passport if you’re not a US resident</h2> <p>Passport renewal looks a bit different for every country, although some general rules do still apply like renewing your passport six months before it expires or if it has less than two to four blank pages. It is best to check your country’s government website for the specific process.</p> <p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport" target="_blank">UK citizens</a> can renew online or mail in a paper form. The processing time is typically three weeks, although the government also offers a <a href="https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently" target="_blank">fast-track service</a>. It costs £88.50 to renew online and £100 to renew passports with a paper form.</p> <p><a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/renew-adult-passport.html" target="_blank">Canadian citizens</a> can renew via mail or in-person, depending on the timeframe in which the passport is needed. If you need to renew your passport within 10-20 business days, you can renew via mail or in person at a Service Canada Center or passport office. If you need an “express” renewal (2-9 days), you’ll need to renew your passport at a passport office with express service. In the event that your passport renewal is urgent (needed by the end of the next business day), you’ll need to go to a passport office with urgent service. In addition to new photos, you’ll also need two references to renew your Canadian passport. They must also be citizens of one of these 14 nations: Argentina, Brazil, Bahrain, Colombia, Germany, India, Netherlands, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK, and Mexico.</p> <p>Before being approved for Global Entry, applicants must go through a strict background check and then attend an in-person interview. Most travelers complete that interview prior to departing for the US, at a Global Entry Enrollment Center in their home country. Only US citizens and US permanent residents can apply for TSA PreCheck as a standalone service. <span>Citizens of partner countries who are enrolled in the <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/nexus">NEXUS</a> or <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/sentri">SENTRI</a> Trusted Traveler programs </span><span>can also</span><span> participate in TSA PreCheck.</span></p> <p>And both foreigners and US citizens get TSA PreCheck membership as part of the package when they join Global Entry. This means they can not only move through US airports faster on arrival, but also during departure from US airports on domestic or international flights.</p> <h2 id="differ">How does Global Entry differ from TSA PreCheck and CLEAR Plus?</h2> <ul> <li>Global Entry streamlines your passage through US airports upon arrival in the country. It costs USD $120 for a five-year membership.</li> <li>TSA PreCheck offers a simpler departure experience from the US.A membership costs UDS $78 for five years.</li> <li><a href="https://www.clearme.com/clear-plus" target="_blank">CLEAR Plus</a> is an alternative to TSA PreCheck, but is run by a private company, not the US Government. <p>Like TSA PreCheck, CLEAR Plus offers easier security screenings when departing from US airports. Instead of lining up to show airport staff your ID, you use a faster-moving CLEAR Plus channel where you’re identified via eye or fingerprint scanning. Click the “Create an account” button and enter your email address.</li> <li>You’ll then be sent an email – open it, click on the verification link within, and follow the instructions for creating a personal TTP account.</li> <li>Once your account is created, you’ll see an option to apply for Global Entry. In this application you will need to provide personal information such as age, place of birth, citizenship status, employment status, your passport data, any criminal record, and details of any previously rejected applications for US Visas or entry permits.</li> <li>During the subsequent interview, which typically lasts between 10 and 30 minutes, you’ll be asked to present ID documents, and to explain your reasons for visiting the US.</li> </ul> <p>A shorter, less stringent interview is required to get approved for TSA PreCheck. This in-person appointment takes roughly 10 minutes, during which the staff member will take your photo, scan your fingerprints, confirm your ID documents, and take your payment for the application.</p> <h2 id="number">What is a Known Traveler Number?</h2> <p>The most important detail of Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership is your Known Traveler Number (KTN). This is the nine or 10-digit number assigned specifically to you once your membership to one of these services is approved.</p> <p>When booking domestic or international flights via US airports, you must type your number into the KTN box during the reservation process. Self-servicing screening technology, being slowly rolled out at US airports, allows TSA PreCheck members to use kiosks where they can scan their ID and carry-on luggage by themselves. But, with proper training and professional guides, who ensure gradual elevation profiles for acclimatization, the risks are significantly reduced. Expect more severe shortness of breath and increased fatigue compared to lower elevations.</p> <p>While not everyone has access to high-altitude training areas, you can effectively prepare by creating a training program combining cardiovascular fitness, endurance training, and strength training at a lower altitude.</p> <p>Exercises that increase your heart rate like running or cycling are great for building cardiovascular endurance. Squats, lunges, and calf raises are great for strengthening your leg muscles. Additionally, going on plenty of training hikes and incorporating a solid core training routing is vital as preparation for carrying heavy backpacks for long periods.</p> <p>Those who have access to training or living at high altitudes can enhance their body's ability to acclimatize to less oxygen, improving aerobic fitness and endurance, and reducing the risk of altitude sickness. However, it is not essential – I’ve completed a few treks above 19,000ft (5,790m) after training at sea level.</p> <p>What is more crucial is being physically fit, mentally prepared, and following a good acclimatization profile during your trek.</p> <h2 id="gear">Essential gear for high-altitude expeditions</h2> <p>The higher you plan to go, the more essential – and often more expensive – your gear becomes. For example, <a href="https://www.usa.gov/visas-citizens-traveling-abroad">US passport holders</a> can currently visit more than 180 countries without obtaining a travel visa ahead of time.</p> <p>If you do need a visa, there are two common ways to apply:</p> <p><strong>Online:</strong> Many countries are increasingly offering visas online – now you can apply for, be granted, and have your visa recorded against your passport details without ever filling out a paper form. Check with your country of destination if they offer this service. A quick scan of your passport (by person or machine) when you get to your destination will reveal whether you have the right to enter a country and how long you’re allowed to stay.</p> <p><strong>In writing:</strong> Some countries still do things in writing – that means obtaining an application form from the local embassy, office, or online, completing it and then submitting it. You may have to attend an interview and submit your passport with the application. Timings range from weeks to months for approvals and vary depending on how busy the embassy or office is. If successful, you’ll be issued official passport stickers or stamps as proof of a successful visa application. Make sure you allow enough time for them to process the visa as you can’t always pay for it to be fast-tracked.</p> <h3>Choosing the right visa</h3> <p>It’s important to choose the right kind of visa for your planned activities. For example, if you’re planning on working at your destination, you’ll need a work visa. Planning on studying? Then you’ll probably need a student visa. Selecting the wrong visa type may see you turned back at the border, held in detention, or sent back home with nothing to show for your getaway. Take the time to read the eligibility criteria for all visas and ask questions if you’re not sure on what is required or what they mean.</p> <h3>Make sure your passport is valid and up to date</h3> <p>No matter what kind of visa you’ve been granted, be sure your passport has several blank pages and at least six months left before it expires, or you may not be allowed to depart your home country. Also, some countries like the US require you to have a passport with an electronic chip to issue visas under their <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program-requirements">visa waiver program</a>. If in doubt, play it safe and renew your passport.</p> <h3>Supporting information and reference letters for your visa</h3> <p>The information travelers supply when they apply for a visa allows officials to control who comes in (including their health, wealth, and intentions) and what they can do while they’re there.</p> <p>The COVID-19 pandemic saw a change in the visa rules for many countries. An increasing number require tourists to show proof of travel insurance coverage to get a visa. Cruise ships typically also require passengers to show proof of travel insurance before boarding.</p> <h3>Where and how long you plan to stay</h3> <p>You may need to provide proof of your financial ability to look after yourself for the chosen length of stay, where you’re going, any job offers that your visa is dependent on, or confirmed study at a certain institution. Make sure you have all this information to hand before you submit your application and don’t leave anything out – insufficient information is one of the many reasons visa applications are refused and you may not get a second chance to supply that information later to prove your eligibility.</p> <h3>Letter of invitation</h3> <p>Some countries require you to be invited to the country, and have proof of it, before you apply for a visa. Speak to a travel agent about how you can obtain these or check the relevant government website. Sometimes it’s as simple as booking some travel and accommodation in advance and the letter will follow. Sometimes, a letter from a relative who lives in country you’re visiting or from, say, the organizer of an event you’re planning to attend will suffice. Sometimes it’s a little more official than that and unless you’re a diplomat you probably won’t be getting that visa.</p> <p><em>Travel tip: Be aware that travel insurance companies may not cover you for cancellation or trip interruption due to an unsuccessful visa application – consider waiting to book your travel until you’ve gotten confirmation that your visa application is successful, or at the very least that your travel arrangements are fully refundable.</em></p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/passport-control.jpg" alt="A traveler hands her passport to an airport official at passport control." /> <figcaption>Don't risk getting turned away at your destination because you don't have the right tourist visa. Image credit: Getty Images / simon2579</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="waivers">Understanding visa waivers and transit visas</h2> <h3>Visa waivers</h3> <p>As a gesture of goodwill, some countries have mutual agreements that allow citizens to come and go between them for holidays, or even work, without obtaining a visa. In some cases, that still means registering for travel but it’s a quick and easy process (usually online), and travel is often valid for much longer than a typical visa. If you come from a country that’s excluded from a visa waiver program, all may not be lost, but you’ll need to apply for a normal visa to match your plans.</p> <h3>Transit visas</h3> <p>Transit visas are designed for travelers passing through a country to get to another destination, and not intending to stay or visit in that country. These can be valid for up to 10 days, or for as little as 24 hours. If you have a stopover but won’t be leaving the airport, find out whether you still need to apply for a visa. Some countries won’t allow you to continue your journey without a transit visa in place, and you might find yourself having to return home at your own expense.</p> <p>If you’re booking flights with the help of a travel agent, double check any visa advice you receive and take a worst-case approach. A delayed flight that has you <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-survive-overnight-stay-in-transit">missing your connecting flight</a> will make you glad you went to the trouble of applying for a transit visa.</p> <h2 id="overstay">Overstaying your visa and what to do if it happens</h2> <p>Let’s say you’ve turned up at the border ready to exit but it turns out you were having so much fun on holidays that you got your dates wrong, and you’ve inadvertently overstayed your visa. What happens now?</p> <p>Depending on the country you’re in, you may be able to talk your way out of it, or pay a small fine. But in some countries, it may lead to detention, deportation and/or being banned temporarily or permanently from re-entering the country</p> <h3>What happens if you overstay your visa?</h3> <p>If you can avoid staying longer in a country than your visa permits, do whatever it takes to do so. The penalties can be harsh and impact your travels well into the future. Even if you overstay on medical reasons, you may still find you’re banned from that country in the future.</p> <p>Generally, the longer you overstay, the longer the period you won’t be allowed back. Fines and imprisonment can also be expected in some countries, even if overstaying your visa by as little as an hour or two. The legal expense and hassle involved in getting yourself out of jail just aren’t worth it.</p> <h2 id="extend">How and when to extend your visa</h2> <p>Many countries recognize that plans change and allow travelers to extend their tourist visa if they want to stay a little longer – or have to. Just how long that extension is, and whether it’s granted at all, depends on where you are in the world as well as your home country. Apply as soon as you know you might need it.</p> <p>If you can’t leave a country due to border closures or limited return flights home, there may be temporary visas available to you – and they may even allow you to work. The lingering effects of COVID-19 have led to a range of special visa conditions being introduced throughout much of the world but be sure to allow plenty of time to apply for an extension or special visa.</p> <h2 id="rejected">What to do if your tourist visa is rejected</h2> <p>There are all kinds of reasons your visa application may be refused, including having previously overstayed your visa as mentioned above, and not all of them may seem fair if you’re given a reason at all. Not many countries welcome people who have a criminal record or have previous visa/immigration violations, and some countries will refuse a visa application for such reasons as:</p> <ul> <li>Your passport is damaged or shows too much wear and tear.</li> <li>Failing to show you have booked accommodation in the destination country.</li> <li>Not providing all the requested documentation with your application.</li> <li>You’ve visited a country the destination country considers hostile, or you’re from a ‘high-risk’ country yourself.</li> <li>You’re not considered of good moral character.</li> </ul> <p>What’s “good moral character”, you may ask? That depends on the country making the decisions. Even if you don’t have a criminal record, if you’ve been subject to a domestic violence order, have failed to file or pay taxes, are guilty of adultery, or have violated controlled substance laws, a government may consider they have reason enough to refuse you entry.</p> <p>If you fall into these categories, give yourself plenty of time to get your visa and address any queries along the way. When I first started my journey, I only had one small tattoo but today I am fairly covered in tattoos and some of these, such as my finger tattoos, are not easy to hide.</p> <p>I personally have not experienced any tattoo discrimination while traveling but I have found many people I meet are very interested in my tattoos. For me, my tattoos each tell a story and are in fact closely linked to my travels as I have been inked in a dozen countries and, on several occasions, have traveled specifically to meet with a tattoo master.</p> <p>However, tattoo acceptance can vary within different cultures. Here are my tips for navigating cultural challenges when traveling with tattoos.</p> <ul> <li><a href="#mosques">Visiting mosques with a tattoo</a></li> <li><a href="#japan">Traveling to Japan with a tattoo </a></li> <li><a href="#face">Face and neck tattoos</a></li> <li><a href="#buddha">Traveling with a tattoo of the Buddha</a></li> <li><a href="#respect">Tips for respectful tattoo display in foreign countries</a></li> </ul> <h2 id="mosques">Visiting mosques with a tattoo</h2> <p>I’ve been to many mosques with my tattoos and haven’t encountered any problems. Obviously, when one visits a mosque, it is polite to cover up, so it’s not like I’m flashing my ink via a tank top. I haven’t heard of any tattooed travelers who <em>did</em> cover up encountering issues in mosques. Image credit: Will Hatton<br /><br /></figcaption> <h2 id="japan">Traveling to Japan with a tattoo</h2> <p>The most common example is in Japan where, until 1948, tattoos were illegal, and the social stigma against tattoos still exists. Traditionally, tattoos in Japan were only reserved for members of the Yakuza (the so-called Japanese Mafia, except nastier and less pasta-loving), and so those sporting inked skin would be assumed to be a part of the criminal underworld and may face discrimination.</p> <p>So, can you show tattoos in Japan? In general, yes, especially in big cities, but you might not be allowed into certain places. When I first visited Japan in 2014, many onsens had signs prohibiting the entrance of tattooed individuals. When I recently revisited the country in September 2023, I visited several onsens and didn’t see any signs relating to tattoos. However, other recent travelers have come across onsens that prohibit tattoos, especially in less-touristed areas. If that’s the case, it’s important to respect the local custom and find another option. Image credit: Will Hatton</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="face">Face and neck tattoos</h2> <p>Planning trips with tattoos is not especially difficult unless you are inked in very prominent locations. If you have face or neck tattoos, especially if you have opted to go with something controversial, you may face some challenges.</p> <p>When I’m not traveling, <a href="/explore/southeast-asia/indonesia/why-i-love-and-hate-bali">I live in Bali</a>, and while the island is known for being pretty liberal and forward-thinking, there are bars and clubs that forbid the entrance of those with face or neck tattoos. I kind of understand the reasoning behind this as often face tattoos appear quite intimidating and are associated with gangs and crime. While I’m sure there are plenty of lovely individuals with face tattoos, if you are traveling with such a prominent tattoo, you will likely encounter some strange looks and potentially some discrimination.</p> <p><em>Planning an overseas adventure? Find out <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered">how travel insurance can cover</a> lost or stolen baggage, sudden illness, trip cancellation, or other mishaps.</em></p> <h2 id="buddha">Traveling with a tattoo of the Buddha</h2> <p>There is one country where you have to be really careful when it comes to tattoos and that is <a href="/explore/southern-asia/sri-lanka/5-things-to-know-before-visiting">Sri Lanka</a>. In recent years, some travelers have been arrested and deported for having visible Buddha tattoos. It isn’t specifically against the law to have a Buddha tattoo, but authorities are sensitive to any perceived disrespect of their God, and fair enough. Sri Lanka is one of my favorite countries to go backpacking; it’s super laid back, relaxed, and friendly. But if you do have a Buddha tattoo, I strongly recommend playing it safe and covering it up while traveling in this part of the world, or Thailand for that matter.</p> <p>In Thailand, you will often spot signs informing travelers that “Buddha is for respecting; Not decoration, not tattoo” and this is another country where one must be aware that tattoo acceptance varies across different cultures. In general, Thais have no problem with tattoos and in fact Sak Yant tattoos remain an important part of the culture of Buddhist monks. However, it can be deemed as incredibly impolite to tattoo a culture’s God across your chest. If you do choose to do this, I recommend ensuring you get this tattoo somewhere that’s easy to cover up.</p> <h2 id="respect">Tips for respectful tattoo display in foreign countries</h2> <p>While in the past, there were legitimate challenges for tattooed travelers, these days most cultures are pretty accepting and accustomed to travelers with ink. This is obviously much more challenging if you have face or neck tattoos but even then, these can be covered using a scarf or a buff.</p> <p>If, however, you have a Buddha tattoo on your face… well, maybe you should just avoid Sri Lanka and Thailand. Ultimately, you have to understand that you are a guest in somebody else’s country and while you might not agree with how they view tattooed travelers you have to act with respect. Don’t become a diva and start shouting at some poor guy who’s just trying to do his job by ensuring people follow the cultural norms when entering a place of worship or cultural significance.</p> <p>Fellow inked travelers, I wish you happy trails and encourage you to consider seeking out tattoo masters around the world. Though you won’t exactly be traveling in style, nothing beats an airline ticket for less than the cost of an upscale dinner.</p> <p>Take the budget route and you’ll save money while flying on a relatively safe Airbus plane. Moreover, budget airlines also fly to more remote airports than the industry’s top dogs. However, the budget route isn’t without flaws.</p> <p>Most budget airlines offer few, if any, amenities – often no more than a beverage (typically water) and a rare bag of chips or pretzels. Prepare for the bare-bones service ahead of time by adding a couple of packaged snacks to your carry-on bag, and you’ll find your trip is that much more enjoyable.</p> <h2 id="luggage">How to avoid luggage fees and seat-selection charges</h2> <p data-start="193" data-end="657">Budget airlines generate much of their revenue through add-on fees—many of which travelers don’t notice until they’re already booking or checking in. While carrying on used to be the cheapest option, some low-cost carriers now charge for carry-ons as well as checked bags. The best way to avoid luggage fees today isn’t simply “pack light,” but to understand each airline’s baggage rules before you buy and choose the option that actually costs less for your trip.</p> <p data-start="659" data-end="916">If you do need to bring a bag, timing matters. Many airlines charge higher prices at the airport than online, so paying for baggage in advance can save money. In some cases, checking a bag during booking may even be cheaper than bringing a <a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/participation/how-to-only-travel-with-hand-luggage">carry-on onboard</a>.</p> <p data-start="918" data-end="1222">Seat selection is another common add-on. Window seats, aisle seats, and seats closer to the front—or with extra legroom—often come with an additional charge. Unless a specific seat truly matters to you, skipping seat selection and accepting a randomly assigned seat is usually the more economical choice.</p> <p data-start="1224" data-end="1404" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">In short, avoiding additional charges are about knowing which extras are worth paying for and which ones quietly inflate the cost of a “cheap” ticket.</p> <p></p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/bag-in-overhead.jpg" alt="A woman removes her carry-on bag from the overhead compartment of an airplane." /> <figcaption>Packing a carry-on bag can save you a lot on luggage fees. If you aren’t 100% sure you will follow through with your trip, consider paying extra for insurance that will allow you to do so. Fees are also applicable for changing a flight instead of outright cancelling it.</p> <p>Some budget airlines even charge extra for those who don’t check in on the web before the flight. Checking in online before reaching the airport is much more efficient as it creates a convenient phone-based digital boarding pass. Wait to check in when you are at the airport, and you might end up paying an unnecessary fee including extra for a printed boarding pass.</p> <p>There is also the potential to pay more for a <a href="https://viatravelers.com/how-to-find-cheap-flights/" target="_blank">budget airline ticket when booking a flight</a> using a PayPal or a credit card. Read the fine print, and you’ll find that paying with some such options often adds a couple more dollars. The additional fee is attributable to the cost of doing business with PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, etc. Consider using a debit card to buy your budget flight; you might sidestep such fees.</p> <p>Changing the details of your reservation can also spur an additional cost. For example, changing your name or other information on the flight ticket might trigger additional charges so be sure to check the entirety of your information <em>before</em> completing the reservation.</p> <p>Now that we’ve detailed all the potential fees for flying a budget airline, it is time to do the math. Add up the fees detailed above, and you’ll find that paying for such extraneous items can equal the cost of a standard airline flight. But if you pick and choose only a couple high-priority amenities, you’ll find flying budget is <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/travel-cheaply-in-cost-of-living-crisis">much more economically efficient</a>.</p> <h2 id="airports">Budget airlines prioritize smaller airports</h2> <p>In my travels, I’ve found that many budget airlines capture market share by efficiently addressing the market's shortcomings. Plenty of the <a href="https://viatravelers.com/best-airlines/" target="_blank">industry’s top airlines</a> rarely frequent or completely ignore smaller airports simply because of the lack of demand.</p> <p>Budget airlines have filled the small airport travel route niche, often bypassing the major airports to focus on those with fewer travelers. Avoiding the major airports helps reduce costs, yet this approach presents transit challenges for money-conscious flyers.</p> <p>Be prepared to take a lengthy car, bus, or train ride into the city after arriving at a small, remote airport. Such transit costs money, meaning you’ll have to factor in the additional cost when booking your flight.</p> <p>Every budget traveler should know some low-cost airlines don’t indicate where smaller airports are located, meaning the onus is on you to get directions, including transportation to and from the airport and your intended destination after arrival.</p> <h2 id="prepare">Prepare accordingly and your budget flight will pay off</h2> <p>I've found flying low-cost airlines is a massive net positive if you keep the trip cost within reason using a bare-bones approach, while factoring in the potential cost for transportation from a remote airport to your destination.</p> <p>When in doubt, run the numbers. Compare the cost of a standard airline round trip to that of a budget airline with a couple amenities added in, and you’ll find low-cost airlines are significantly cheaper.</p> <p><em>Editor’s note: One other potential downfall of budget airlines is bankruptcy (it does sometimes happen).
