Company going from strength to strength with policy sales increasing 43% YOY during 2024

Cork (March 3, 2025) – nib Travel Services Europe (trading as World Nomads) has been officially recognised as one of Ireland’s Best Small Workplaces for 2025, ranking 7th in this year’s prestigious list.

The accolade is based on direct feedback from employees, provided as part of an extensive and anonymous survey assessing workplace culture, leadership, and overall employee experience.
This milestone, alongside the integration of services such as SmartDelay™, providing lounge access and alternative benefits for flight delays and World Nomads Powered by Air Doctor, which provides free GP care for travellers abroad, demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to customer-centric innovation for a more seamless travel experience.

World Nomads enjoyed a stellar year in 2004, with a 43% increase in Irish policy sales (year on year), further increasing its share in the travel insurance market. The brands new AMT product, introduced in June, quickly found an audience and is fast growing in terms of share of its overall policy sales,

“Our ranking as one of Ireland’s Best Small Workplaces in 2025 is a testament to our people and the values we uphold as an organisation,” said Jonathan Frankham, General Manager, UK & Europe at World Nomads.

“We are proud to provide an environment where our employees feel valued, empowered, and motivated to drive meaningful change in the travel insurance space.
World Nomads has built a workplace culture that prioritises employee well-being, professional growth, and work-life balance. The company offers a range of benefits, including flexible remote working arrangements, healthcare coverage, expanded leave benefits, and a strong Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion action plan. Employees have also benefited from access to a variety of wellness initiatives, such as expert speaker sessions, fitness programs, and protected time for self-care.

“Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and rewarding workplace that allows them to thrive,” Frankham added. “By investing in our employees, we ensure that our team remains engaged, motivated, and focused on delivering the best possible experience for our customers.

Searches for the term ‘solo holiday’ have been at an all-time high, with an average of 12.1k searches per month

Data reveals the best destinations for solo travellers in 2025, with Thailand, United States and Australia topping the list

Jonathan Frankham, travel expert at World Nomads, shares his top tips on how to stay safe whilst travelling alone

London (February 26, 2025) - Searches for the term ‘solo holiday’ have been at an all-time high over the past year, with the term seeing an average of 12.1k1 searches each month.

New data from global travel insurance experts, World Nomads, indicates that the solo travel market will continue to grow in 2025, with solo travel policies accounting for 85%2 of all UK policy sales since 2022, making solo travel the fastest growing segment. ABTA also reported a year-on-year rise in solo travellers in 2024.

Staying safe on your trip

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager at World Nomads UK & EU, shares his advice on how to plan and prepare for a solo travel trip in 2025.

Travelling alone can be extremely fulfilling and rewarding, but ensuring you stay safe throughout your trip must be a top priority. There are a number of steps you can take to look after yourself before and during your holiday:

Make sure you have properly researched your destination and the local area, including any local customs or laws and cultural traditions. Also take into consideration traveller reviews on sites such as TripAdvisor, Instagram or TikTok for a real-life viewpoint. You could also check the government website for the most up-to-date safety information about the destination.

Buy travel insurance from the day you book your trip. Travel insurance can be a safety net in case anything goes wrong, before or during your trip. For example, it can provide support should your trip be delayed or cancelled, reimburse you for stolen items (up to the benefit limits), or allow you to get sufficient care should you get sick or injured during your holiday, through services such as Air Doctor, which is available to World Nomads policyholders3 in the UK and specific EU countries.

Whilst going ‘off-grid’ and staying away from social media can be really beneficial from a wellbeing perspective, it’s important to stay connected with at least a few friends or family members at home. If needed, consider purchasing a global eSIM so you can regularly check in and share your travel agenda.

Always look at the reviews and ratings of hotels and accommodation providers. Wherever you stay, your accommodation should have a secure lock, and ideally a safe for valuable possessions and 24/7 front desk security (where applicable).

Rather than carrying cash around, a credit card is a much safer alternative and offers fraud protection. You can also get a replacement card in case your card is lost or stolen.

Socialise, but don’t overshare. Travel provides a great opportunity to connect with others, but try to refrain from sharing personal details or information about your itinerary and never hand over your passport, particularly if pressured.

No matter where you go, take extra care to stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying any expensive items and make sure you carry items in a zipped bag. Always use official taxi services or public transport when travelling around your destination.

The best destinations for solo travellers

Some destinations are increasing in popularity amongst solo travellers, making them a great choice for others looking to take their first independent adventure and meet like-minded people.

World Nomads has revealed the top 104 best destinations for solo travellers, based on the below being the most popular with other solo travellers since 2022:

Thailand

United States

Australia

France

Spain

Italy

Vietnam

Indonesia

Cambodia

Germany

Activities for solo travellers

One of the best things about travelling alone is that it allows you to try new experiences and learn new skills. Jonathan shares his thoughts on some of the best activities for solo travellers, including:

Try a cooking class: Learning how to make local dishes is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and meet new people in a relaxed and friendly environment. This hands-on activity will encourage you to try new ingredients and learn new culinary techniques.

Join a hiking or walking tour: Guided tours are a fantastic way to learn about the history of a destination. As you’ll often have a local tour guide, it provides an opportunity to ask plenty of questions and learn about local customs and traditions. Walking tours are also a great place to meet fellow travellers.

Book a yoga or meditation experience: Trying a yoga or meditation experience at the beginning of your trip will really help you to relax and appreciate your surroundings. For those who live busy lives, this kind of relaxation experience can help to quieten your mind and enjoy a moment of reflection in a new environment.

Visit a local market: Local markets provide a great opportunity to support the economy of your destination whilst learning about the culture. Spend some time tasting authentic local food, appreciating handcrafted goods and taking in the atmosphere.

Contribute through volunteering programmes: There is no better way to give back to the local community than through signing up to a volunteer programme. There are usually plenty of opportunities to get involved in local workshops or programmes where you’ll learn new skills, meet new people, connect to your destination and experience the culture with a new perspective and sense of fulfillment.

Make sure you have the right travel insurance

When buying travel insurance, it is extremely important to check the policy wording and purchase the correct and most appropriate coverage for your destination and the activities you are planning to do.

Jonathan advises: "Travelling solo is a liberating experience. It offers the chance to do what and go where you want, on your own terms. It also makes you more likely to branch out, forge deeper connections with others and even discover more about oneself.

“To ensure that solo travellers can make the most out of their experience, we’d always advise to strike a balance between wanderlust and being prepared. Each destination brings a wealth of opportunity, but staying safe is key.

“Our main advice would be to exercise common sense and vigilance throughout your trip. It’s important to plan routes, book accommodations and excursions in advance, and familiarise yourself with local etiquette. Taking out a comprehensive insurance policy can also act as an important safety net when travelling alone.

“By staying prepared, respectful, and vigilant, you can make the most of your solo adventure while prioritising your safety."

As Greece is one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone countries, many residents will know the next steps but tourists may be less knowledgeable about what to do during these unpredictable natural events.

Global travel insurance experts, World Nomads, have shared their essential safety advice on what to do before, during and after an earthquake hits should you find yourself in an impacted area.

Preparing for an earthquake

Although there’s no way to predict exactly when and where an earthquake is going to happen, there are steps you can take to prepare yourself if visiting earthquake-prone destinations.

If travelling to an area prone to earthquakes, have an emergency kit with the following items on your person:

Mobile phone

Food

Water

Water purification tablets

Money

First-aid kit

Fully charged power bank

Key documents like passports and travel insurance policies

Other key steps to take in order to prepare are:

Ensure that you have the phone numbers of important contacts saved in your phone, but also have a written copy with you in case your phone gets lost or runs out of battery - key numbers include an emergency contact at home and the embassy. Phone numbers of local friends, the airline, tour company and travel insurance company are also useful ones to consider

At your accommodation, identify the nearest evacuation point that’s an open area away from overhanging trees, power lines and bridges

Should you be in your room when an earthquake hits, make sure you’ve identified safe places there, such as underneath sturdy furniture or a space against an internal wall away from windows or heavy furniture

If staying in a coastal area, consider the risks of secondary dangers such as tsunamis and head for higher ground, or in hilly areas that could be affected by landslides, find flat and open ground

Do research ahead of time on whether an area has any earthquake warnings to ensure that your travel insurance policy will cover you - if you buy a policy after an earthquake, any expenses you accrue won’t be covered.

Staying safe during an earthquake

If you find yourself in the midst of an earthquake, take the following steps:

If outside or near an exit: Move to an open space away from buildings, trees, powerlines, and bridges. Get on the ground and cover your head.

If inside and not near an exit: Stay inside, find a safe spot away from falling objects, crouch, and cover your head. Unless in an old adobe or wood house, seek shelter under strong furniture or against an internal wall.

Avoid running outside: Many injuries happen from falls while trying to escape.

Avoid bathtubs and "triangle of life" spaces: The main danger is falling objects - hide under a sturdy table or bed for protection.

If in bed: Stay put and cover your head with a pillow.

If in a wheelchair: Move away from falling hazards, lock the wheels, and cover your head with your arms.

What to do after an earthquake

When safe to do so, head straight to your evacuation points, making sure you have your emergency kit with you.

If you can, reach out to the embassy and let your emergency contact know that you’re safe so they can relay this to your other friends and family whilst you save your phone battery. Social media also offers a number of check-in options so that you can mark yourself safe amidst a natural disaster.

Should you find yourself trapped, try not to move in order to preserve your energy and to avoid circulating dust. Only call for help if you hear people nearby and try to conserve your food and water supplies.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager for World Nomads, UK & EU, says, "With Greece experiencing an average of 23 earthquakes per year, it’s a destination where travellers should be prepared for unexpected disruptions. The recent tremors in Santorini serve as a stark reminder of the region’s seismic activity.

“At World Nomads, we understand the challenges travellers face in natural disasters, which is why our Explorer Plan provides cover for trip disruptions, substitute accommodation, and emergency medical assistance in the event of a natural catastrophe, including earthquakes.

“Being informed, having an emergency plan, and ensuring you have the right level of travel insurance can make all the difference when navigating such events abroad. It's important to note that coverage is only available if the policy was purchased before the natural catastrophe became a known event. Additionally, travellers are expected to follow the advice of local authorities and take reasonable measures to minimize their expenses.”

World Nomads offer cover for natural catastrophes such as earthquakes with their Explorer Plan. Whilst most demonstrations in South Korea are typically peaceful and well-managed, the current climate may increase risks for travellers.

Global travel insurance experts, World Nomads, have provided practical, actionable advice for navigating these situations safely.

1. Stay Informed and Plan Ahead

Make sure that you’re familiar with the latest news about the political situation in South Korea. Key areas to currently monitor include:

Gwanghwamun and the Constitutional Court (Anguk)

Seoul Western District Court (Gongdeok)

National Assembly (Yeouido)

Make sure you install the South Korean Emergency Ready App, which provides real-time updates on civil emergencies, including protests and drills.

It’s also good to be prepared for drills or emergency scenarios; South Korea conducts civil emergency drills throughout the year. These involve sirens, halting traffic, and directing people to safety zones. Participation isn’t mandatory but always follow instructions from officials.

2. Avoid Protest Zones

Avoid large public gatherings, especially near the hotspots mentioned above. Protests can escalate quickly, even if they begin peacefully. Follow these guidelines:

Steer clear of demonstrations: If you hear of a protest, avoid the area entirely.

Don’t participate: It’s illegal for foreign nationals to participate in political activities in South Korea.

Follow local advice: Listen to local authorities or hotel management for updates.

3. Practice Safety During Unrest

If you inadvertently find yourself near or in a protest, follow these steps:

Stay on the edges of the crowd where it is safer.

Avoid confrontations and stay calm—do not run or appear hostile.

If violence erupts, seek shelter in a nearby building or safe area.

If you find yourself in a crowd crush, create a space for yourself by grasping your wrists and bracing your elbows away from your sides; bend over slightly – this should allow you breathing room.

Stay away from police or security force actions.

4. Secure Your Accommodation

During periods of unrest, remain in your hotel or other accommodations:

Avoid windows: Stay away from windows and draw curtains to protect against potential glass shattering.

Move to an inner room: If protests or gunfire are nearby, an inside room offers better protection.

Stay in touch with your embassy and follow their guidance.

5. Keep Insurance and Emergency Contacts Handy

Travel insurance is essential, particularly during volatile times. Ensure your policy covers civil unrest. Have your embassy’s contact information on hand and inform family or friends of your whereabouts.

South Korea remains a welcoming and fascinating destination for travellers, but heightened tensions call for extra vigilance. By staying informed and prepared, you can enjoy your trip while prioritising your safety.

Jono Frankham, World Nomads General Manager for the UK market commented:

"Encouragingly, we’re seeing demand for travel to South Korea approach pre-COVID levels, with quotes increasing as a proportion of the broader Asia market and our total book. Notably, January 2025 is on track to be the strongest start to the year since 2020 in terms of policy sales, signaling that travelers aren’t just considering a trip to South Korea - they’re actively making plans and taking steps to protect them.

“At World Nomads, we continuously monitor claims data to ensure we provide accurate and timely advice to our travellers. We can reassure visitors to South Korea that despite recent political turbulence, our claims data indicates no surge in incidents directly related to the unrest. The number of claims originating from South Korea over the past six months by World Nomads customers is in single figures, underlining its reputation as a safe and reliable travel destination.

“South Korea remains an enriching destination for those who adhere to local guidance and exercise common travel precautions. As always, we encourage travellers to stay informed, respect local advisories, and secure a suitable travel insurance policy fit for their planned activities."

Before you buy a travel insurance policy, check your government travel warnings and health advice – there may be no travel insurance cover for locations with a government travel ban or health advice against travel.

UK travellers can expect savings on Annual Multi-Trip policies of up to 29% depending on the regions and age group selected.

One of the biggest drops can be enjoyed by those aged 26-35 on a Standard Worldwide Annual Multi-Trip policy (including USA), which is dropping by 27%, saving travellers £70.77 on a policy now priced at £189.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe said:

“Travel insurance is a money-smart move that provides financial protection and peace of mind for when you fall ill, have an accident, lose baggage or belongings while on a trip, costs can spiral quickly, even in Europe, where travellers frequently can get access to state-provided care. For example treatment for a broken leg in Spain can cost £15,000, while a hospital stay in the USA and medical repatriation could cost as much as £100,000.

“For frequent travellers, Annual Multi-Trip insurance policies with World Nomads provides cover for an unlimited number of trips over a 12-month period, which provides you with one less thing to think about each time and can be more cost effective compared to a Single Trip policy. It’s a no-brainer.”

According to World Nomads’ own research, just under a quarter of British travellers choose an Annual Multi-Trip policy for convenience and cost savings.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON ANNUAL MULTI-TRIP POLICIES

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or someone planning one big far-flung trip, the choice between an Annual Multi-Trip and a Single Trip policy can have a significant impact on your cover, as well as your bottom line. World Nomads has put together some frequently asked questions on which would work best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions on Annual Multi-Trip Insurance?

What is it?

Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance is designed for British globetrotters who embark on multiple journeys within a year. With this type of policy, you’re covered for an unlimited number of trips within a specified region during the policy period. It's a cost-effective and convenient option for those who travel frequently.

What are the benefits and considerations of Annual Multi-Trip?

Cost-effective and Convenient: Instead of purchasing a separate policy for each trip, you pay once for year-round coverage and it saves arranging travel insurance on every trip.

Kids go free: World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip policies offer free coverage for children under the age of 18 travelling with an adult, making year-round family travel more affordable.

Domestic travel: The Annual Multi-Trip policy offers cover for both international and domestic travel (subject to some restrictions – check your policy wording for more information).

Is there trip duration limits? Each trip is capped at a certain number of days (31 days with the Standard plan, 45 days with the Explorer plan).

How Much Does an Annual Multi-Trip policy cost? While cost-effective in the long run, the upfront payment may be higher than a Single Trip policy.

Does a policy auto renew? Annual Multi-Trip policies do not auto-renew. Consumers need to purchase a new policy each year, but World Nomads will write to consumers 28 days before expiry so you can get another quote. On the other hand, Single Trip policies expire after each journey, requiring a new purchase for any subsequent trips.

What is Single Trip travel insurance?

As the name suggests, Single Trip insurance provides coverage for a single journey. It's ideal for travellers embarking on one-off vacations or business trips outside their home country.

What are the benefits and considerations of Single Trip?

Flexibility: Tailored coverage for a specific trip, allowing you to customize your policy based on the destination, duration and planned activities.

Less restrictions on trip duration: Enjoy the freedom to choose the length of your trip without worrying about exceeding coverage limits. Single Trip policies have a 365-day limit, but if you wish to continue your trip you can simply purchase a new policy.

Simplicity: (depending on your travel plans of course). You only need to focus on the details of one trip at a time.

Less commitment: If you’re an occasional traveller rather than a frequent flyer a Single Trip policy offers cover when you need it, without the commitment or expense of an Annual Multi-Trip policy.

Do Single Trip policies have higher costs? While cheaper for a Single Trip, multiple Single Trip policies can add up to more than an Annual Multi-Trip policy over time.

Need for repeated purchases: You'll need to buy a new policy for each trip.

No cover for domestic travel: Single Trip policies do not have cover when travelling within the UK.

Other factors to consider when choosing a travel insurance policy:

Cover type: Annual Multi-Trip and Single Trip policies share some similarities, including benefits like trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses, and personal baggage cover. However, the limits and exclusions may vary between Standard and Explorer plans, so it’s essential to review the policy details carefully.

Trip duration: With Annual Multi-Trip insurance, each trip is typically limited to a specific number of days. Ensure the maximum trip duration aligns with your travel plans to avoid gaps in coverage. Single Trip policies offer more flexibility in trip duration.

Travel companions: With an Annual Multi-Trip policy your children (aged under 18), if named on the policy, will also be covered (for free) when travelling with another adult for the full duration (365 days). A Single Trip policy will also include free cover for your children. However, cover ends when the Single Trip policy expires.

Pre-existing medical conditions: Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered under either Annual Multi-Trip or Single Trip insurance policies. A pre-existing medical condition is defined as any medical or dental condition, or related complication that has required or is awaiting medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, prescribed medication, consultations, check-ups, surgery, tests or investigations in the 180 days before you buy or extend your policy or book your trip (whichever you do last).

This is a summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the plans described. Please refer to the actual plans for complete details of cover and exclusions.

More than a quarter of Brits don’t know what to do if they get sick aboard

60% are worried about falling sick overseas

Over a third of Brits have experienced a medical situation whilst travelling

Nearly half (48%) of Brits are worried about the cost of treatment abroad

World Nomads has launched a new Air Doctor service offering relief in case of receiving medical assistance while abroad

London: October, 2024 – As the first case of Mpox has been detected in the UK, World Nomads’ Travel Anxiety Report 2024* has revealed more than a quarter (26%) of British holidaymakers don’t know what they would do if they needed medical attention abroad, despite three in five (60%) believing they could fall sick whilst travelling.

Over a third (38%) of Brits have experienced a medical situation whilst abroad, including more than two-thirds of 18-24-year-olds (67%), though more than half of them (54%) do not take out travel insurance policies when travelling abroad.

For those who do take out travel insurance, medical emergencies are the main reason for taking out insurance. Nearly half (48%) of travelling Brits, who filled out the World Nomads’ survey, are most concerned about the cost of treatment abroad, underscoring the financial risks of medical emergencies, while nearly three in five (58%) Brits prioritise coverage for medical emergencies or evacuations.

In the past three months, average World Nomads claims in the UK and EU for injuries were £1304.77, whilst treatment for illness were £752.92.

One in three (32%) holidaymakers worry about access to quality healthcare, reflecting concerns about the adequacy of medical facilities abroad. Nearly a third (31%) are concerned about being able to return home after a medical emergency, highlighting the importance of repatriation coverage.

As a response to these findings, World Nomads has introduced World Nomads Powered by Air Doctor. The service, which is available to all travel insurance policy holders, connects travellers to private doctors and medical advice in destinations where public health services may be overstretched and/or unable to treat international travellers. The feature is available for World Nomads on all Standard and Explorer plans on both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies and is suitable for non-emergency medical assistance.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe at World Nomads, says:

“We know Brits treasure their holidays, and our Travel Anxiety Report highlights that getting ill on holiday is a significant stress – especially as we head towards winter and the Christmas holidays. Air Doctor is a welcome addition as it’s cashless and claimless and breaks down language barriers.

“The feature is designed to reduce the stress and burden of navigating a foreign health care system where it isn’t necessary, and it provides another seamless experience for our customers.

“Moreover, it also reduces out-of-pocket costs for customers because it removes need to attend A&E services for non-urgent medical issues, along with automated payouts, meaning that there’s no need to pay out and claim later. For those customers who require assistance with more urgent medical issues, we advise you to contact our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team.”

World Nomads customers can access Air Doctor via the app or website, where they will be able to:

Search for a doctor in their destination city.

Choose between in-person or telemedicine consultations.

Book an appointment directly through the platform in a language of your choosing.

With Air Doctor, all your visits are cashless. Simply attend your appointment, get help, and get on with your travels.

Worryingly, 28% of UK travellers only sometimes purchase travel insurance, with 5% never doing so—even though 40% of Brits admit to having experienced medical issues while travelling abroad.

A quarter of respondents (25%) without insurance indicated they would pay out-of-pocket for treatment at a local doctor or hospital while another 17% would hope to avoid costs completely.

Alternative ways respondents cited for covering costs include relying on their Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) to help cover expenses (19%), turning to friends and family for financial support (13%), or seeking help through online crowdfunding (5%).

A further 19% of respondents stated they would wait until returning home to receive medical care, a decision that could pose significant health risks.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe at World Nomads, says:

“With over 1 in 4 don’t know how they would handle a medical emergency abroad without insurance, and many choosing to forgo insurance regularly, it is clear there is a significant gap in preparedness among British travellers.

“The reliance on out-of-pocket expenses, limited coverage options like the GHIC, or simply hoping for the best or relying on others can lead to risky financial and health consequences for all parties involved. What’s more, these approaches often fail to cover the full scope of costs, such as repatriation or additional family expenses, which can quickly add up to thousands of pounds.

“We advise travellers to take out travel insurance before their journey. At World Nomads, our policies cover a wide range of unforeseen medical expenses, including hospitalisation, emergency treatment, and even repatriation if necessary. For frequent travellers, an annual policy is a smart option - providing protection across multiple trips in the face of ongoing health crises”.

Despite this, many still travel without adequate insurance.

London, UK - September 1, 2024 – With increasing reports of global health threats, World Nomads’ Travel Anxiety Report 2024 has found that nearly half of Brits (48%) are most concerned about experiencing a medical emergency or illness while travelling.

Sadly, only 40% of Brits can confidently say they will not fall ill abroad, with this anxiety particularly pronounced among older travellers, with 58% of those aged 55 and over citing it as a top worry.

Recent global health threats, including the resurgence of COVID-19, the declaration of the 2024 Monkeypox outbreak as a "public health emergency of international concern" by the World Health Organisation, and the emergence of the Oropouche virus in South America, have intensified these concerns.

Worryingly, despite these risks and concerns, 28% of UK travellers still don’t always buy travel insurance, while a concerning 5.13% never purchase it at all. This highlights a significant gap in preparation that could leave many vulnerable in the face of unexpected health crises.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe at World Nomads, says:

“It's clear that health concerns are a top priority for British travellers, with almost half worried about falling ill abroad. This anxiety reflects the broader global environment where health risks are more varied and unpredictable than ever. However, it’s concerning that so many travellers still embark on international trips without adequate insurance coverage.

“Travellers should always be prepared, not just by checking the latest travel advisories and health recommendations, but by ensuring they have comprehensive travel insurance. At World Nomads, our policies cover a wide range of unforeseen medical expenses, including hospitalisation, emergency treatment, and even repatriation if necessary.

“We strongly advise travellers to secure insurance before their journey so they can focus on enjoying their holiday, knowing they are protected against the unexpected. An annual policy can be a good option to consider – ensuring protection across multiple trips in spite of ongoing health crises”.

Only 39% purchase travel insurance when they book their holiday

17% wait until just a week before their trip to purchase insurance

Alarmingly, 5% purchase insurance the day before, and 2% only do so on the day of travel.

London, UK – August 2024 - As Brits prepare for the last major holiday exodus of the summer season this upcoming bank holiday weekend, new survey data* commissioned by travel insurance provider World Nomads reveals a concerning trend: 61% of UK travellers are putting their holidays at risk by not securing travel insurance as soon as they book their trips.

With the busiest bank holiday weekend on the roads since at least 2015 expected, and potential disruptions from upcoming border force strikes at Heathrow from 31 August to 3 September, the need for timely travel insurance has never been more critical.

Just 39% of travellers purchase insurance when they book their holiday. This leaves a majority exposed during the critical time between booking and departure.

17% of travellers admit to waiting until just one week before their trip to secure coverage, drastically reducing their protection window.

Shockingly, 5% purchase insurance the day before their holiday, and 2% wait until the day of travel. This last-minute approach leaves little room for unexpected events like strikes or natural disasters that could derail their plans.

Who’s Taking the Biggest Risks?

Younger Travellers: Those aged 18-34 are the worst offenders, with over 20% delaying until the last week or later.

Older Travellers: Those aged 55+ are more cautious, with nearly 50% buying insurance at the time of booking vs just 26% of those aged 18-34

Gender Differences: Men are more likely than women to delay, with 19% of men waiting until the last week, compared to 15% of women.

Why This Matters Now

These findings come at a time when travel plans are increasingly at risk, due to unpredictable factors, including the busiest August bank holiday weekend forecasted on the roads since at least 2015 and upcoming border force strikes at Heathrow from 31 August to 3 September. Delaying or not buying travel insurance leaves Brits vulnerable to significant financial losses if trips are cancelled or disrupted.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe at World Nomads, says:

“This data is a stark reminder of the importance of travel insurance. Financial exposure begins the moment you book your trip, not just when you set foot on the plane. Our findings highlight a concerning trend where many Brits are not adequately protecting themselves from the start.

We cannot stress enough the importance of being covered from the moment you book your trip. Accidents, cancellations, or emergencies can unfortunately occur at any time, and having the right insurance in place offers flexibility and financial security. If you have left it late and are still planning to jet off, don’t join the 2% who wait until the very last minute— we’d strongly recommend securing your travel insurance now to avoid potential disaster.

For frequent travellers, considering an annual policy can be especially beneficial. Not only does it ensure you’re covered for every trip you take throughout the year, but it also eliminates the need to repeatedly purchase insurance, making it a convenient and cost-effective option. An annual policy guarantees that you’re protected from the very beginning of your travel planning, no matter how many trips you take.”

World Nomads launched an annual multi-trip policy in June 2024. To find out more or purchase a policy, visit www.worldnomads.com/uk

*The study of 2,000 UK adults was carried out between 16 and 19 August by Opinium Research on behalf of travel insurance provider World Nomads to look at the immediate motivators and barriers to international travel and insurance considerations for 2024.

ABOUT WORLD NOMADS

43% of travelling Brits have experienced flight delays or cancellations in the past year

16% of Brits consider abandoning their trip if a flight is disrupted

World Nomads has launched SmartDelay™ offering relief during flight chaos

As Brits prepare for the August Bank Holiday and the last great getaway of the year, World Nomads’ Travel Anxiety Report 2024 has found that 40% of Brits have said flight delays and cancellations are a major concern when travelling internationally.

Sadly, over two-fifths (43%) of travelling Brits have already faced such disruptions, with only 33% confident they won't encounter issues on their next trip.

For those affected, 25% admit to worrying at the gate, 22% seek a place to sleep, 14% feel lost on what to do, 10% frantically try to catch up on work emails and 16% are so frustrated they consider abandoning their trip altogether.

Following these findings, World Nomads has launched SmartDelay - a new feature available to all Standard and Explorer plan holders on both Annual Multi Trip and Single Trip Insurance policies. SmartDelay gives travellers access to over 1500 airport lounges or food and drinks vouchers if flights are delayed by more than 90 minutes. It also provides access for up to four additional passengers, if they are named on the policy and travelling on the same flight.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe at World Nomads, says:

“We know Brits treasure their holidays, but the increasing risk of flight delays and strikes can quickly turn excitement into stress. Our Travel Anxiety Report highlights that during delays, many travellers experience significant stress or might go as far as giving up a holiday altogether. SmartDelay is our way of transforming this stressful experience into a moment of relief. Lounge access provides somewhere to relax, have a bite to eat and stay connected. We think SmartDelay is a great new addition for travellers. Whether they’re taking that ‘once in a lifetime’ trip, are making last minute Bank Holiday plans, or are frequent flyers to a favoured destination, SmartDelay will provide a little something to look forward to if the dreaded delays hit.”

New parametric service SmartDelay™ introduced across all Standard and Explorer plans, offering airport lounge access and alternative benefits for flight delays of more than 90 minutes

London, 27 June 2024: World Nomads, the global travel insurance provider, has announced the launch of its new Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) product in the UK & Ireland, following a new strategic underwriting partnership with Collinson, one of the UK’s leading travel insurance providers, dedicated to helping the world travel with ease and confidence. The new product will enhance the customer experience with the addition of increased coverage limits and new benefits that apply to both AMT and single-trip policies, as well as innovative parametric service SmartDelay, ensuring comfort, convenience and tranquillity during unexpected flight delays.

Introducing the Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) Policy for Frequent and Adventurous Travellers

World Nomads’ AMT policy offers comprehensive and cost-effective coverage for frequent international and domestic travellers, allowing for multiple trips within a one-year period under a single policy. This product caters to World Nomads’ core demographic: independent travellers with a passion for adventure and high-energy activities, including coverage for over 150 adventure sports activities under the Standard and Explorer Plan.

Additionally, a higher age limit (up to 69 years) and free coverage for children (aged under 18) when travelling with adult relatives or friends applies, making the AMT policy ideal for multigenerational travel.

New Services to Tackle Airline Travel Delays and Simplify Medical Access

World Nomads is also introducing new and additional innovative services for AMT Standard and Explorer Plan policyholders, including:

SmartDelay: Providing access to over 1500 airport lounges or alternative benefits such as spa, sleep pods and restaurant discounts for travellers experiencing flight delays of more than 90 minutes

Air Doctor: Connecting travellers to private doctors and medical advice in destinations where public health services may be overstretched and/or unable to treat international travellers.

Enhanced Benefits across Single-trip and AMT Insurance Products

Drawing upon Collinson’s 35+ years of industry experience, the new underwriting partnership brings a range of additional benefits to both AMT and Single-trip policy holders. Customers will enjoy increased coverage limits and enhanced benefits for trip cancellation and delays, emergency medical expenses, personal baggage, and personal liability*. These enhancements ensure that travellers are better protected against a wider range of travel-related issues.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager, UK and Europe says:

“Both the introduction of the AMT product and the integration of Collinson as World Nomads’ new underwriters reflect our unwavering commitment to providing adventurous travellers with the most comprehensive and innovative coverage available. We are thrilled to offer an enhanced travel insurance experience that addresses the unique needs of today's travellers, whether that be pursuing their love of action and adventure activities, celebrating nature or culture, those that favour short city breaks or families looking to get away and create memories for a lifetime.

“Our research found that the majority of travellers (65%) in the UK and Ireland prioritise policies that cover year-round adventures, which is why we have extended our offerings to include even more adventure activities.

“With features like Air Doctor and SmartDelay, our travellers can tackle today's most common travel challenges with confidence, enjoying seamless access to medical care and luxurious airport lounges during delays.
26% of Brits don’t buy travel insurance, exposing Brits to costly financial risk

Data reveals young travellers going further for longer

World Nomads offers price drop and cost-saving tips to make travel more accessible

Media Release: London, UK - World Nomads, the global travel insurance company, is helping young UK & EU adventurers with their travel budgets this autumn by introducing a 15% reduction in travel insurance premiums as they reveal their customer-base in the UK is shifting its towards longer and more far-flung holidays.

Over 80% of World Nomads’ policies in the UK are for travellers under the age of 40 and World Nomads’ sales statistics suggest they are increasingly seeking coverage for far-flung destinations. Sixty per cent of World Nomads policies in 2023 have been sold for destinations outside of Europe, with Asia, Australia, and New Zealand making up 20% sold this year. Polices for Thailand alone have surged by 10% in 2023.

In addition, 40% of policies sold now cater to journeys lasting over two weeks, extending up to three months, reflecting a trend towards more elongated travel periods.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK and Europe said, “World Nomads is a go-to travel insurance provider for young, adventurous travellers as we offer cover for more than 200 adventure sports and activities, plus tech and gear. This year we have seen a sales spike for long-haul destinations – and travellers want to stay longer too."

But the cost-of-living crisis hits this demographic hard. Too many travellers are prepared to “take their chances” – which is just a false economy. Medical expenses, extreme weather, strikes, cancellations and even war have all hit the travel headlines recently, and these events can prove very costly if you have no travel insurance back-up.

“An average policy claim in the UK is over £400, so getting a good-value travel insurance policy covering the time you are away, the destination you are going to and activities you plan to do is a non-nonsense, no-brainer. Research done by the likes of the Post Office show that 26% of British tourists do not take out travel insurance. With our price drop, more travellers will now have access to an additional layer of protection to explore the world with confidence.

“For example, a typical 25-year-old make traveller heading to Thailand from 1-15 November will now cost just £69.50. This is drastically less than the average cost of UK claims, at £431.76, which we anticipate will leave travellers with extra funds to explore, experience, and create lasting memories."

World Nomads offers the following tips for travellers to make the most of their journeys while staying within budget:

Pinpoint your priorities: We all travel for different reasons. So, identify your primary reasons for travelling, such as relaxation, adventure, or family time, and focus your spending on what matters most to you and compromise on those that are less important.

Do your pre-trip research: Saving a bundle before you leave home can make your trip feel far less financially stressful. Look for package deals and last-minute discounts on accommodations and tours, book flights If you’re heading to Europe, a Eurail pass that allows you to travel affordably by train to multiple countries is the way to go.

Get money smart: Don’t wait until you get to the airport to exchange money for foreign currency. Research online for the best conversion, exchange currency at home before you leave and consider pre-loaded currency cards for fee-free withdrawals.

Eat and drink well for less: It’s easy to burn through budget when you’re eating out three times a day and buying multiple drinks a day. Carry a refillable water bottle to save on bottled water costs and reduce plastic waste, check if your hotel includes breakfast or opt for self-catering accommodation to skip on costly food bills.

Embrace resourcefulness: Traveling on a budget doesn't mean sacrificing fun. Favour nature-based activities, such as at beaches or parks, or check out what’s going on in the local area. If guided tours catch your interest, keep in mind that self-guided alternatives often offer similar experiences at a lower cost.

Addressing financial hurdles faced by students

With UK student loan debt surpassing £225.85 billion in 2023, and rising student living costs in Ireland due to unaffordable accomodation, the weight of financial obligations continues to hinder students' aspirations. To tackle this challenge head-on, World Nomads and Student Beans have teamed up to deliver a solution that supports students as they navigate their academic journeys and travel adventures.

Travel insurance for students

Students are natural explorers, driven by a desire to uncover new horizons and embrace diverse experiences. Whether embarking on a gap year adventure, backpacking, studying abroad, or seeking alternative forms of education, travel is an integral milestone in the journey of many young adults.

While your study-abroad institution might cover basic health and travel essentials, World Nomads steps in to ensure protection for a wide range of adventures and extended trips. Our plans, including the Standard and Explorer options, cover travellers for medical evacuation, cancellation, baggage, and over 200 adventure activities (subject to coverage level).

Moreover, our plans are designed with your well-being in mind. Recent policy updates in the UK now offer coverage for trip cancellation if you, as a student at a recognized school, college, or university, need to re-sit an exam unexpectedly. Students should consider the following benefits when choosing a travel insurance policy for long-term trips:

Cancellation: Protecting against trip cancellations, to keep your investment safe.

Curtailment: For costs you incur if you need to return home early.

Medical Emergencies: Financial support for sudden and unforeseen injury or illness.

Repatriation: Coordinating a safe journey home in emergency situations.

Personal Belongings: Safeguarding your gadgets and possessions.

Return Home Option: Providing flexibility to return home temporarily without ending your coverage.

Jonathan Frankham, World Nomads General Manager, UK & EU, says of the Partnership:

“We know that students love to travel, and that they do so for a variety of reasons: it provides invaluable life experience and can help define a young person’s place and purpose in the world, help instil lifelong values and priorities or simply offer them a chance to experience something – a destination, a culture, an experience they otherwise wouldn’t. We believe that every student should have the opportunity to explore the world without compromising their financial stability due to an incident or injury while travelling abroad.

“Our partnership with Student Beans is about supporting young travellers by providing them with affordable travel insurance plans that offer cover for sudden and unforeseen costs. Another reason that World Nomads is excited to partner with Student Beans is its access to the Gen Z market. As well as being voracious travellers and adventure seekers, Gen Z are also very socially conscious, which aligns with the World Nomads ethos.

“Numerous studies have shown that Gen Z is the most generous in terms of donating their time to charity. They are keener to volunteer than other generations because they are very socially conscious and want to positively impact their communities. Volunteering allows them to contribute to a cause they believe in directly.

“If you want to give back when you travel, World Nomad’s travel insurance allows you to participate in a range of volunteer activities. Whether it’s summer teaching programmes or clean water projects, volunteering can help strengthen communities, forge meaningful connections and change lives. Multiple world records for freediving have just been broken at the Vertical Blue festival in the Bahamas; the Netflix documentary The Deepest Breath has become wildly popular; the tragic Titanic Submersible incident in June shone a light on the popularity of Titanic tours, and the deadly Everest mountain climbing season in May again revealed how perilous the mountains can be for climbers in the Himalayas.

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager, UK and Europe at adventure travel insurance specialist World Nomads has shared insights on the implications for travel insurance and how holidaymakers can plan for safer adventure holidays.

Challanges for the insurance sector

Jonathan Frankham says, “The trend has been super-charged in recent years for a number of reasons. New technologies are taking us places we never thought possible, opening up new frontiers for thrill-seekers and giving them opportunities to explore uncharted territories. Secondly, pent-up demand caused by the pandemic has inspired travellers to test themselves and push their boundaries. Lastly, programmes generated around extreme activities, such as ‘The Deepest Breath’ and the space tourism race amongst high-profile billionaires are more hyped than they have ever been.

“The challenges of insuring extreme tourism activities are varied for the travel insurance sector. As seen with recent fatalities in the deepest depths of the world’s oceans and at the highest peaks, there are far higher risks associated with these excursions than the average sightseeing trips.

“Insurance companies need to evaluate skills, training, and experience to assess the level of risk they're taking on and they must figure out how to provide emergency medical help, and evacuations in far-flung locations. Think of expeditions to the polar regions where medical emergency evacuations will involve thousands of miles or the extreme risks involved with space travel.

“World Nomads provides generous limits for over 200 adventure activities – including hiking up to 6,000 metres altitude - which covers trekking to Everest Base Camp or scuba diving to depths of 50 metres, shark cage diving and even heli-skiing, but steers away from summitting Everest or expeditions to the Mariana Trench. The reason for this is that we can only insure for activities that we can offer assistance with should something go wrong. For example, trekking to the summit of Everest will bring you to an elevation of over 8,000 meters, and at that altitude it poses a serious risk to pilots and passengers. Flying a helicopter is incredibly difficult. Landing it is considered to be nearly impossible. It’s the reason why retrieving bodies from the summit remains a rarity even today. And so, insuring against this type of activity will remain the reserve of more specialist travel insurance providers.”

World Nomads' tips on planning for an extreme adventure holiday

Is your activity covered by your insurer?

Always read through the policy wording to decide which plan is best suited for the activities and sports that you have planned. If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, get in touch with your provider

Does your insurance provide the level of cover you need?

Many travel insurance plans categorise sports and leisure activities into separate levels to reflect degrees of difficulty or intensity. Check your policy wording and be specific when taking out insurance to be safe.

Are you fit enough for the activity?

Before trying new experiences, think about fitness and plan your activities accordingly

Do you have the correct gear and equipment? Ensure you have all the equipment, footwear or protective clothing to participate safely, and consider whether you require coverage for these items when you take out a policy

Is your activity operator certified or credited? Verify the facts before you book

Extreme tourism facts:

The global adventure tourism market was estimated at approximately 288 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, this figure is set to grow to roughly 2,824 billion U.S. dollars by 2030

Virgin Galactic launched its first commercial flight into space in June, with paying customers set to be welcomed aboard from August. Tickets will cost £356,000

More than 100,000 cruise passengers are set to visit Antarctica this season (October – March), an increase of 40% on the largest pre-pandemic year

Strike action in UK, France, Spain may impact travel during Easter and May bank holidays

Airport strikes are ‘known events’, and will affect policy coverage for those yet to buy

Passport strikes could delay passports arriving; travellers are not covered for cancellations

Media Release: London –

A slew of potential strikes throughout the UK and Europe is expected to affect travellers going abroad over the Easter and May bank holidays.

Security guards at Heathrow, British passport office staff and Spanish air traffic controllers are all expected strike in the coming months. The outlook for France is also unclear with rolling protests and strikes in opposition to the government’s decision to raise the pension age.

Planned disruptions follow on from widespread industrial action across the UK this spring, which according to the latest figures from the ONS, resulted in 13% of those impacted by rail strikes unable to travel for holiday or leisure as planned.

World Nomads, the global travel insurance company, has provided clear advice on when travel insurance covers consumers for the disruption caused by industrial action and what Brits can do to save their well-earned breaks.

“Strikes and protests are slated to disrupt precious Easter and May bank holiday plans,” said Jonathan Frankham, World Nomads General Manager UK and Europe. “But you can minimise the impact on your holiday with proper preparation and an understanding of your travel insurance coverage.

“Check policy wording for coverage in case of trip cancellation or curtailment before departure, including any terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply.

“If you believe your travel plans may be affected by the strikes, we advise you to contact your travel provider as a first step to determine the impact on your trip. If you need to make changes to your travel arrangements, they may be able to assist you.

“Ensure your passport is valid and up to date before travel. Unfortunately, if you are impacted by passport office delays and need to change your travel arrangements, you’re not covered. We’d strongly recommend waiting until you have received your passport before booking your trip and taking out travel insurance.

“Book your travel insurance when you book your holiday accommodation or flights so that if industrial action strikes after you’ve booked, you are covered. If you buy travel insurance and strikes are already planned, these are ‘known events’ and you’re not covered.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What strikes are taking place?

In the UK, security guards at London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 will strike for 10 days between 21 March and 9 April (Easter Sunday) to demand better pay. Passport office workers will also strike between 3 April to 5 May to demand better pay and working conditions.

In Spain, Swissport ground workers and cargo handlers will hold a series of 24-hour walkouts occurring every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday until 13 April to demand better pay and working conditions This is expected to cause disruption at some of Spain’s busiest airports including Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Valencia, Murcia and Malaga.

Does travel insurance cover passports that haven’t arrived in time?

Travellers are not covered in any instance if they need to cancel their trip because passports haven’t arrived on time. The UK HM Passport Office currently states that travellers should allow up to 10 weeks for delivery of new documents.

Does travel insurance cover the Swissport and Heathrow strike action?

If a Certificate of Insurance was issued before the time and day the strike was announced, travellers may be covered for strike-related events that impact their travel plans. However, policies purchased afterwards may not offer cover, as the strike would be considered a ‘known event’.

What coverage may be included for these strikes?

The coverage offered will depend on the insurance policy travellers have chosen. World Nomads’ Explorer Plan offers coverage for missed connections and trip interruptions, provided the travel insurance policy was purchased before the announcement of the strike action, while the Standard Plan does not offer cover for such events.

World Nomads’ Explorer Plan may have cover to help with expenses if plans are disrupted:

Pre-trip cancellation: Where the carrier booked to travel has been cancelled or delayed for more than 24 hours before departure from the UK. Travellers may be eligible for reimbursement of their non-refundable, pre-paid travel expenses.

Travel delay on-trip: If the strike results in the cessation or delay of your common carrier's transport services for at least 12 hours, there may be coverage for additional travel and accommodation expenses due to this trip interruption.

Missed Connection: If travellers fail, as a result of strike action, to arrive in time to board an onward connecting carrier on which they were booked to travel, including connections within the United Kingdom.

The expenses that may be reimbursed include travel, lodging, or missed excursions. The amount received could be up to the maximum benefit amount specified in the policy document. Travellers are always advised to check their policy documents for more details.

What should travellers do if their plans are affected by these strikes?

Travellers are advised to contact their airline or tour operator to check for potential impacts and to change travel arrangements where necessary. In the event of a claim, it is important to take all steps to reduce the cost of the claim and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred where necessary.

What else can travellers do to minimise travel disruption during this period?

Checking in online before arriving at the airport and allowing more time to arrive and pass through airport security can help save time and reduce potential waiting times, particularly with the increase in passenger numbers expected over the Easter and May Bank Holiday periods. Where possible, the use of eGates is preferable as it can also alleviate further delays for other passengers.

Travellers are also advised to consider that other ad-hoc events can have further impacts on delay time, such as adverse weather conditions.
