The new global scholarship will give content makers the opportunity, on a global platform, to show their best content. The four scholarship program winners will learn how to sharpen their skills and gain experience and access to opportunities with World Nomads and beyond.

The scholarship, open until October 16, offers one-on-one mentoring from top travel-content creators NOMADasaurus, professional-standard gear from Sony and RØDE microphones, and US $2500 in trip funding to create content on assignment for World Nomads.

“World Nomads is delighted to support the next generation of content makers – people with a passion for travel, filmmaking, writing, and photography,” said Christina Tunnah, general manager of marketing and brands, World Nomads. “Our scholarship program has been running for 16 years. It reflects the World Nomads community and its drive for capturing the great narratives and stories of the host communities in which they travel.”

Past scholarship winners have moved on to major careers in travel content, including Australia’s NOMADasaurus, winners of the 2014 Travel Writing scholarship.

“I’m often asked what was the turning point for us to go from amateur travel bloggers to professionals,” said Jarryd Salem, (Co-founder, CEO). “I can confidently say that it started one evening in Pai, by putting together an entry for the World Nomads Travel Writing Scholarship.

“As I look back on the growth and success of NOMADasaurus and our personal brands, I hand-on-my-heart attribute where we are today to winning the World Nomads Scholarship in 2014.”

Ms. Tunnah said: “We’re thrilled that we played a small part in NOMADasaurus’ successful brand and business model.”

In previous years, World Nomads offered individual scholarships for travel writing, travel filmmaking, and travel photography. Since 2007, 100,000 travelers from more than 100 countries have entered for their chance to win. This year, four scholarships are on offer.

The four winners will learn new skills across all three disciplines in addition to the business savvy it takes to succeed in the creator economy. The new program aims to stay relevant to the evolving nature of content creation and changing attitudes toward combining travel, life, work, entertainment, and media.

To enter, applicants must provide a link to a public post of their best travel content. Four winners will receive more than US $5,000 in prizes to help kick-start their careers. Winners will have their content shared on World Nomads’ social, email, and website channels, allowing them to reach a large global audience and gain access to further opportunities.

44 percent of responses indicate flights were delayed or cancelled in past three months.

Airlines provided no assistance according to 64 percent of poll responses.

More than a third (38 percent) say they spent up to $250 on flights, meals, and hotel stays not covered by their airline; 12 percent spent $500-$1000.

Nearly half (47 percent) with lost/delayed luggage received their lost bag in one day or less; 35 percent said it took one to three days and 12 percent waited one to two weeks.

Media Release: New York, NY – A World Nomads’ 24-hour snap Instagram Pulse Poll indicates travel delays and cancellations may be getting worse, with 44 percent of poll responses indicating that their flight was delayed or cancelled over the summer.

The snap poll followed data from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that shows in the past six months, 24 percent of domestic flights were delayed, and 3.2 percent cancelled.

World Nomads conducted its poll just days in advance of the scheduled launch of the DOT’s new dashboard aimed at exposing the lack of flight delay/cancellation assistance provided by the nation’s carriers, and after a horror peak travel period marked by lost luggage, delayed and cancelled domestic and international flights and low levels of customer assistance, as evidenced in the World Nomads poll.

World Nomads finds that 64 percent indicate they received no assistance from their airline during the past three months. As a result, travelers had to dip into their own pockets to cover expenses such as flights, hotel stays, and meals due to delays or cancellations. Thirty-eight percent of responses showed travelers spent up to $250 on such expenses and 12 percent reported spending up to $1,000.

World Nomads is a fast-growing travel insurance and assistance provider offering simple and flexible travel insurance and safety advice to help consumers travel more confidently. This most recent Instagram Pulse Poll is part of an ongoing series of snapshot polls taken in a 24-hour period, aimed at tracking trends and surveying travelers on hot topic issues.

Following a summer characterized by images of unclaimed delayed and lost baggage at airports around the world, and World Nomads’ lost baggage claims soaring 122 percent in the past three months (compared to pre-pandemic levels for the same period in 2019), a bright spot in the poll is airlines seem to be improving at returning lost bags more quickly. Nearly half of responses (47 percent) indicate that they received their lost/delayed bag in less than one day, while 35 percent responded that it took one to three days and 12 percent said the wait to have their bag returned was one to two weeks. The vast majority (60 percent) of travelers who responded said that for even longer trips (10 days or more) they would avoid checking luggage and travel light with carry-on bags only.

“While all eyes are on the soon-to-be released DOT dashboard, the jury is still out if this will make an appreciable difference, and if the airlines will be encouraged to do more for their passengers when it comes to flight delays and cancellations, which continue to plague the global air travel system,” said Christina Tunnah, general manager of marketing and brands, World Nomads.

“As a result, we are finding that more and more travelers are discovering the value of carrying travel insurance and having a third party such as World Nomads on their side to provide assistance and compensation when things don’t go as planned.”

Majority of Americans surveyed (67 percent) said nothing would stop them from booking travel.

44 percent plan to take at least one trip in the next year.

Top destinations: Mexico, Italy, Spain, Iceland.

Only nine percent say fear of Covid-19 would stop them traveling.

Baggage delay claims soared a record 122 percent in past three months.

Flight delay and cancellation claims up 30 percent in same period.

Media Release: New York, NY – Despite a summer of travel chaos in the United States, fueled by the lingering effects of the global pandemic, flight delays, strikes, extreme weather, inflation and a looming recession, an overwhelming majority of Americans now say that nothing would stop them booking a vacation, a sharp rise from previous survey results in March.

World Nomads surveyed1 2,900 Americans in June and July on their travel intentions over winter and the early months of 2023. This is the fifth in a series of traveler surveys.

“Despite the economic headwinds and seemingly endless turbulence on the travel front, more than ever Americans are prioritizing vacations as a worthwhile expense and a way to escape it all,” said Christina Tunnah, general manager of marketing and brands, World Nomads.

“People are keen to get back out and explore the world,” she said. “Things might not always go according to plan, but it’s not putting people off making those plans.”

World Nomads is a fast-growing travel insurance provider offering simple and flexible travel insurance and safety advice to help consumers travel more confidently. Its survey, a leading indicator of travel intent, shows 67 percent of travelers will book vacations, noting there’s nothing in the current environment that would derail their plans. This is up from 40 percent reported in the previous survey, conducted in March, who said they intended to travel.

The World Nomads’ Traveler Intent survey found 44 percent of respondents plan to take one trip in the next year; 41 percent will take two to three trips and 10 percent plan to take four to five trips.

New destinations are high on the list of priorities for Americans as the world reopens: 70 percent plan to travel to a new destination.

Top destinations for travel include Mexico, Italy, Spain as well as Iceland and Peru. Relaxing and disconnecting from work and busy lives is high on the list of priorities for 36 percent of respondents; 20 percent will participate in outdoor adventures and 18 percent will opt for cultural immersion.

Other findings show travelers remain resilient and confident about their travel plans, despite overall pessimism about the state of the US economy, rising inflation and the impact of rising interest rates. Only nine percent said their concerns about Covid would prevent them from booking future travel, compared to 13 percent when surveyed six months ago.

Just six percent said they were worried about cost-of-living increases impacting their travel budgets, and only five percent said that they could not afford to travel right now. In March, 21 percent said they could not afford to travel.

Only four percent are concerned about border restrictions changing while they are overseas, compared with 13 percent who indicated concern in March.

Travel Mishaps Persist with Baggage and Flight Delay Claims on The Rise

While Americans are ready to get back out there in the coming months, it isn’t without some level of concern following a summer with so many experiencing travel mishaps.

World Nomads reported some of its largest increases in mishandled luggage (delayed, lost/stolen, damaged) claims since 2019. Baggage delay claims alone increased a record 122 percent in the past three months compared to the same period prior to the pandemic in 2019.

Flight delay and cancellation claims are also up 30 percent for the same period. This comes on the heels of the Department of Transportation’s recently announced proposed changes to federal policy that guide flight refunds when airlines cancel flights or significantly alter a flight schedule.

“There is no doubt that this summer has been a bumpy road back to travel for millions of Americans, and World Nomads’ baggage delay, flight delay and cancellation claim reports over the past three months clearly demonstrate this,” Tunnah said. “However, we are seeing that more and more Americans are recognizing the value of having that extra layer of protection that travel insurance provides if things don’t go as planned.”

World Nomads Launches “Explore More” Campaign to Allow Travel with Confidence

To help educate travelers on how travel insurance coverage works, how to protect their travel investment and how to arm themselves with expert travel safety advice and support before leaving home, World Nomads is launching an “Explore More” campaign this fall.
