That’s 2.5 billion more than cricket, the second most popular sport. Soccer fans are known for their loyalty, passion, creative (and sometimes profane) chants, and rituals such as <a href="https://www.premierleague.com/en/news/4379929/explained-what-is-a-tifo-banner">“tifos”.</a> These are massive banners or mosaic-like displays made of squares of cardboard that fans hold up to form words or images – the designs are planned well in advance and can fill an entire stadium.</p> <p>In June 2026, fans from around the world will bring this unique energy to the FIFA World Cup 2026. This tournament will be the largest of its kind ever held, and the first to be hosted by three nations: Canada, the US, and Mexico. 42 nations will compete in 104 matches.</p> <p>If you’re planning to attend the World Cup but haven’t experienced major soccer matches before, what can you expect at the tournament? Read on to learn how soccer culture differs between nations, and what it will be like to watch the beautiful game played on such a grand scale.</p> <h2>Differences in soccer culture between nations</h2> <h3>Mexico</h3> <p>Mexican <strong><em>fútbol</em></strong> culture is legendary. Mexico is one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world, right up there with England, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, and soccer is by far the most popular sport. Matches are noisy and boisterous affairs, and fans may end up showered with beer and popcorn.</p> <p>Joe Furey, a former drug war correspondent frequently based in Mexico, told World Nomads, “Compared to the US and Canada, when I’ve watched football in Mexico the atmosphere has been rowdier, more physical, and more continuous – chanting that doesn’t stop, drums, flags, whole sections on their feet. But it's just ritual, not a menace. And the Mexican authorities know how to police it, at least in built-up areas with larger stadiums.”</p> <p>Mexican soccer games are also family-friendly, with multiple generations in attendance – more so than Argentina or Brazil.</p> <h3>United States</h3> <p>Though many people in the US grow up playing soccer, and community soccer leagues can be seen on fields across the country, professional soccer has been relatively slow to catch on. Major League Soccer (MLS) still lags behind the national football, baseball, basketball, and hockey leagues in popularity. But the gap is closing.</p> <p>Interest in soccer is at an all-time high, fueled by interest in international leagues such as the UK’s Premier League, the recent successes of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, and the arrival of international superstars such as Lionel Messi and David Beckham on MLS teams. <a href="https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/major-league-soccer-s-30th-regular-season-brings-unmatched-fan-engagement">More than 11 million fans attended MLS matches in 2025</a>.</p> <p>And while the fervor of the fan base may not rival Mexico, there’s still plenty of passion. Avid fans of MLS teams have formed supporter groups who buy up blocks of seats at games, where they chant and create tifos.</p> <p>The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams have their own supporter group, the <a href="https://theamericanoutlaws.com/">American Outlaws</a>. They will be in full force at the FIFA World Cup 2026.</p> <p>The Mexican National Team also has a <a href="https://adage.com/studio-30/aa-mexican-national-team-advantage-every-us-brand-should-be-playing">massive and enthusiastic fan base in the US</a>, with some 65 million supporters.</p> <h3>Canada</h3> <p>MLS, like the NHL, MLB, and NBA, has teams in both the US and Canada. While soccer is the most widely played sport in Canada, MLS ranks behind professional hockey, basketball, baseball, and both American and Canadian football as a spectator sport. But, as in the US, Canadian interest in soccer is growing – and the Canadian national team has become <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/article/canadas-mens-soccer-team-earns-highest-fifa-ranking-ever/">one of the best teams in North and Central America</a>. Membership in the Voyageurs, Team Canada’s supporter group, is surging ahead of the FIFA World Cup.</p> <h2>Soccer culture at the FIFA World Cup</h2> <p>The atmosphere at World Cup stadiums might have more to do with the teams playing than with the host city or country. Each team’s set of fans will bring their own personality and traditions to the matches – for example, host cities are preparing for <a href="https://www.keranews.org/news/2025-12-17/from-a-10-000-dutch-fan-march-to-securing-a-legacy-arlington-world-cup-planning-enters-final-stage">some 10,000 members of the Orange Army</a> (fans of the Dutch team) to flood the streets as they march en masse towards the stadium.</p> <p>All stadiums have seating sections for supporters – the national teams often set aside tickets for supporter groups such as the Voyageurs. These sections will feature chanting, face paint, silly hats, flags, tifas, and high levels of enthusiasm.</p> <p>In other sections of the stadium, many fans might not have a strong preference for either team but are there for the experience. If fans bought tickets before the draw that determines who plays who in the opening matches, they wouldn’t have known which teams they’d end up watching. (I fall into this category – I’m American and my husband is Dutch, but the match we’ll be watching is Team Paraguay vs. Australia’s Socceroos.) In any case, the atmosphere will be electric.</p> <p>The level of passion may be just as high at the Fan Festivals and Fan Zones. These events, put on by the host cities, are typically free and open to the public. The 2026 Fan Festivals will take place in iconic locations such as the <a href="https://losangelesfwc26.com/fifa-fan-festival-los-angeles/">Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum</a> and Mexico City’s enormous Zócalo Plaza and <a href="https://www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/story/2025-12-05/host-mexico-city-declares-itself-soul-of-world-cup">may draw crowds up to 100,000</a>. Reservations will likely be required, and security will be tight. <a href="https://losangelesfwc26.com/los-angeles-world-cup-26-fan-zones/">Fan Zones</a> are smaller events in neighborhoods around the host cities. Crowds will likely be smaller, and security less strict.</p> <p>These events will feature live broadcasts of all the matches (not just those in the host city) and draw thousands of locals, domestic tourists, and international travelers who want to cheer on their national team with other like-minded fans.</p> <p>Fan Zones won’t just be happening in host cities – they’ll also be held in cities across the host nations and around the world.</p> <h3>Team rivalries</h3> <p>The energy at any given match or fan festival will also depend heavily on the teams facing each other and how close the tournament is to the final. Certain soccer rivalries are especially contentious, including Brazil vs. Argentina, Serbia vs. Croatia, Germany vs. Netherlands – and USA vs. Mexico.</p> <p>The <a href="https://soccerpost.com/blogs/news/the-history-of-dos-a-cero">USA vs. Mexico rivalry</a> dates to 1934, but heated up in the 90s when professional soccer finally took off in the USA and matches actually became competitive. A couple of pivotal 2-0 victories by the USA stoked the fire over the following decades, leading US fans to taunt the Mexican team with chants of “<em>Dos a Cero</em>.”</p> <p>The rivalry between the USA and Canada, while not as intense, dates back all the way to 1885, when the USA played its first-ever international match against Canada. The two countries currently have the biggest international hockey rivalry, having faced off in multiple Olympic finals and semifinals – most recently in the 2026 Olympics in Milan – and the current political climate between the two nations <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6216009/2025/03/19/usmnt-rivalry-canada-mexico-concacaf-nations-league/">may also increase the animosity</a> between soccer fans.</p> <p>To prevent hooliganism at the World Cup, fans with a history of violence <a href="https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/uk-travel-ban-violent-man-city-chelsea-fans-during-club-world-cup-2025-04-02/">will be banned</a> from traveling to the tournament. FIFA officials expect this year’s tournament to draw <a href="https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/sandiego/index.php/boletines/974-fifa-world-cup-2026-a-huge-opportunity-for-the-calibaja-region">some 5.5 million visitors</a> throughout Mexico. </p> <p>An event of this size, held in a country that has recently experienced a wave of cartel violence, has many travelers wondering if the World Cup will be safe for visitors. Here’s what to know before you go, and safety tips to help keep your visit trouble-free.</p> <ul> <li><a href="#crime">Crime concerns during the FIFA World Cup 2026</a></li> <li><a href="#health">Health care access for visitors to Mexico</a></li> <li><a href="#host-cities">World Cup safety in host cities</a></li> <li><a href="#mexico-city">Mexico City safety</a></li> <li><a href="#guadalajara">Guadalajara safety</a></li> <li><a href="#monterrey">Monterrey safety</a></li> <li><a href="#transportation">Transportation and taxi safety</a></li> <li><a href="#protests">Protests and large gatherings</a></li> <li><a href="#tips">Practical safety tips for visiting Mexico during the World Cup</a></li> </ul> <h2 id="crime">Crime concerns during the FIFA World Cup 2026</h2> <p>Despite Mexico’s reputation for crime, visitors should keep in mind that it is a very large and diverse country. The US State Department has issued a <a href="https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/mexico.html">travel advisory of Level 2: Use increased caution</a> for Mexico, the same level as Spain and Sweden. However, some areas are best avoided due to the risk of kidnapping and drug cartel violence.</p> <h3>Cartel violence in Mexico</h3> <p><a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/north-america/mexico/the-truth-behind-drug-violence">Drug cartels and organized crime</a> are an unfortunate reality in Mexico, particularly in certain states and border areas.</p> <p>In late February 2026, cartel violence in Mexico made international headlines when Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, known as El Mencho, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/22/world/americas/jalisco-new-generation-cartel-leader-killed.html">was killed in the state of Jalisco</a>. In retaliation, cartel members set fire to vehicles and businesses and created roadblocks in at least 13 states. Tourists in some regions, including the popular seaside resort town of Puerto Vallarta, were told to shelter in place, and numerous airlines cancelled flights.</p> <p>The chaos has since died down. Former drug war correspondent <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/about/contributors/joseph-furey">Joe Furey</a> told World Nomads, “I doubt there's much more danger of cartel retaliation. What we saw was proof of loyalty, nothing more – necessary bluster.”</p> <p>“Cartels are, at root, financial organizations,” he pointed out. “Their money is not confined to drugs, extortion, and other overtly illegal rackets. It’s also washed and reinvested through legitimate businesses and professional laundering networks.”</p> <p>In that way, the World Cup is an economic opportunity for cartels. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, author of a new book on Mexican cartels, says she thinks the cartels <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7067411/2026/02/24/mexico-cartel-violence-fifa-world-cup-playoffs/">are likely to keep a low profile</a> during the event, so as not to drive away tourists.</p> <h3>Tourist zones</h3> <p>Most of the cartel-related violence is related to turf wars between rival gangs, and typically happens away from tourist areas, as local authorities go to great lengths to keep those areas safe. Though there have been isolated cases where tourists were caught in the crossfire, sticking to resort areas and tourist zones is still one of the best ways to stay out of trouble.</p> <h3>Government travel advisories</h3> <p>Due in part to cartel violence, the US State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel travel advisory for the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. While none of the FIFA World Cup venues are in these states, Guadalajara’s World Cup venue is in Jalisco, which is currently at a Level 3: Reconsider Travel level.</p> <h2 id="health">Health care access for visitors to Mexico</h2> <p>Mexico has both public and private health care systems, but the public system is generally intended for residents enrolled in national programs. If you’re visiting Mexico and need medical care, you’ll usually be treated at a private clinic or hospital and may be expected to pay for services upfront. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage</em></p> <h2 id="host-cities">World Cup safety in host cities</h2> <p>Mexico is hosting 13 World Cup matches across three cities: <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/mexico/mexico-city">Mexico City</a>, <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/mexico/guadalajara">Guadalajara</a>, and <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/mexico/monterrey">Monterrey</a>. But is Mexico safe for soccer fans?</p> <p>Following the cartel violence, FIFA representatives <a href="https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/mexico-fifa-review-world-cup-security/3857111/">met with Mexican authorities</a> to discuss security at the World Cup and review the intelligence, prevention, and operational protocols that were planned.</p> <p>On March 6, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/3/6/mexicos-sheinbaum-pledges-robust-world-cup-security-in-visit-to-jalisco">announced plans</a> to deploy as many as 100,000 security personnel in host cities and tourist areas during the tournament – 20,000 military personnel, 55,000 police officers, and members of private security companies.</p> <p>The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/48043487/mexico-violence-happened-fifa-response-means-world-cup">expressed</a> his “complete confidence in Mexico, in its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and in the authorities."</p> <hr /><br /><span class="Icon--lge Icon--circle icon-wn-navigation"></span> <h2 id="mexico-city">Mexico City safety</h2> <p>Mexico’s capital city is a vibrant, sprawling, sophisticated metropolis, offering rich history and modern culture. The city will host five matches at the venerable Estadio Azteca (renamed Estadio de Ciudad de México for the World Cup), including the opening match of the tournament on June 11. In anticipation of huge crowds, Mexico City has a <a href="https://mexicobusiness.news/mobility/news/mexico-fast-tracks-mobility-2026-fifa-world-cup">host of infrastructure and security projects</a> in the works, including:</p> <ul> <li><a href="https://mexicobusiness.news/aerospace/news/aicm-rolls-out-ai-security-ahead-world-cup-2026">Large-scale security improvements</a> at Mexico City International Airport</li> <li>Deployment of counter-drones to protect stadiums and fan zones</li> <li>A new train line connecting Mexico City with Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía (around 30 miles away)</li> <li>Complete renovation of Metro Line 1</li> <li>Renovated tourist routes and new streetlights in the city center</li> <li>Creation of 208 mi (334km) of “safe paths” featuring LED lighting, video surveillance cameras, and emergency buttons that connect pedestrians with authorities</li> <li>17 additional trains on the light rail route leading to the stadium</li> </ul> <p>The stadium is also being <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/heres-what-estadio-azteca-will-look-like-for-the-2026-world-cup/">completely renovated</a> and brought up to <a href="https://inside.fifa.com/innovation/stadium-guidelines/general-process-guidelines/operations/safety-and-security-operations">FIFA security and safety standards</a>. Updates include:</p> <ul> <li>100 new security cameras</li> <li>Improved elevators, circulation routes, and accessibility</li> <li>Updated entrances, stairs, and corridors to improve traffic flow and eliminate bottlenecks</li> <li>Redesigned road and pedestrian accesses to the station</li> </ul> <p>Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at the <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/fifa-fan-festival/mexico-city">FIFA Fan Festival</a> in the Zócalo, Mexico City’s massive central square. Crowds of up to 100,000 are expected on days when Mexico’s team is playing.</p> <p>LGBTQ+ fans will find a welcoming, safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub at <a href="https://pridehouseunited2026.com/mexico-city/">Pride House Mexico City 2026</a>. Events will also take place in Guadalajara and Monterrey.</p> <hr /><br /><span class="Icon--lge Icon--circle icon-wn-navigation"></span> <h2 id="guadalajara">Guadalajara safety</h2> <p>Birthplace of mariachi music, <em>birria</em>, and the sombrero, Guadalajara is a big, fun-loving city that’s stayed true to its roots.</p> <p>The city is undergoing a <a href="https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/all-upgrades-coming-guadalajara-world-cup/">variety of safety and infrastructure improvements</a> ahead of the World Cup, including:</p> <ul> <li>Expansion of the Chapala highway connecting Guadalajara to the international airport</li> <li>A new Line 5 of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system connecting the airport with the stadium and downtown</li> <li>Upgrades to the historic downtown, such as new streetlights and improved pedestrian crossings</li> <li>Plans to <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2026/2/24/residents-raise-alarm-as-violence-hit-guadalajara-to-host-world-cup-games">deploy drones and AI-driven video surveillance</a> to provide security</li> </ul> <p>Estadio Akron in Zapopan (part of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area) will host four matches and will be renamed Estadio Guadalajara for the tournament. The metro or light rail will likely be the easiest and most efficient way to get to the venues.</p> <h3>Safety tips for public transit</h3> <ul> <li>Pickpockets are common on public transit, especially on crowded cars and at peak travel times, so keep your belongings secure</li> <li>Stay vigilant in busy stations and major transfer points</li> <li>Beware of distraction tactics where one person spills something on you or causes a commotion while their accomplice steals your belongings</li> </ul> <h3>Taxi safety in Mexico</h3> <p>Express kidnappings – where a taxi driver picks up the victim, takes them to an ATM, and forces them to take out cash – have been known to occur in Mexico. To avoid trouble:</p> <ul> <li>Never hail a taxi – even one that looks properly licensed – off the street</li> <li>At transport hubs, pick up taxis from authorized taxi kiosks</li> <li>Have your accommodation or restaurant order you a licensed taxi, or use ride-sharing apps</li> </ul> <h2 id="protests">Protests and large gatherings</h2> <p>Avoid protests, as they can become violent. And the US State Department has issued its lowest-level travel advisory, Level 1: Exercise normal precautions, <a href="http://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/canada">for Canada</a>.</p> <p>Nonetheless, crime does occur here. While a <a href="https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/250722/dq250722a-eng.htm">2025 report</a> from Statistics Canada indicates that crime is down in Canada, <a href="https://angusreid.org/crime-fraud-in-canada-widespread/">62% of Canadians</a> feel crime is a growing concern in their communities. Canada’s <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/services/defence/nationalsecurity/terrorism-threat-level.html">terrorism threat level</a> has been listed as Medium since 2014, indicating authorities remain vigilant and prepared to respond to potential threats. And while gun control laws are strict, <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/9-are-killed-in-mass-shooting-at-a-school-and-home-in-remote-british-columbia">nine people were killed</a> in a mass shooting in a remote part of British Columbia in February 2026.</p> <h3>Crime during the World Cup</h3> <p>Will Canada be safe for soccer fans? Travelers should be aware that FIFA has strict stadium guidelines that all venues must adhere to, and safety, infrastructure, and crowd management requirements that host cities must prioritize.</p> <p>But it’s still important to prepare and stay vigilant. Check out our World Cup safety tips to help ensure a trouble-free visit.</p> <h2 id="host-cities">Host cities and urban safety</h2> <hr /><br /><span class="Icon--lge Icon--circle icon-wn-navigation"></span> <h3>Toronto, Ontario</h3> <p>Canada’s largest city, <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/canada/toronto">Toronto</a> gets its name from the Native term for “meeting place.” It’s one of the world’s most ethnically diverse cities, known for vibrant culture and great food.</p> <p>The World Cup 2026 is expected to bring more than a million people to Toronto. To host the tournament, the City of Toronto is spending an estimated CAD $380 million. Around $150 million will be spent on safety, security, and long-lasting upgrades to ensure the city meets all FIFA requirements. Plans include:</p> <ul> <li>Temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras around World Cup events</li> <li>Cooling infrastructure, such as misting stations and water trucks</li> <li>Increased transit services, with priority lanes for buses and streetcars on Bathurst and Dufferin streets</li> <li>A new, larger streetcar stop east of the gates to Exhibition Place near Fleet Street</li> </ul> <h4>BMO Field</h4> <p><br /> Located at Exhibition Place west of the city center, BMO Field (renamed Toronto Stadium for the tournament) will <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/canada/toronto">host six World Cup matches</a>.</p> <p>Of the 16 total World Cup venues, BMO Field is undergoing <a href="https://www.enr.com/articles/62595-project-teams-race-to-finish-2026-world-cup-venues">one of the largest renovations</a>. “Fans can expect a much different landscape around the stadiums than normal, with an expanded secure zone,” <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/world-cup-2026-canada-1.7405860">said Peter Montopoli</a>, C<em>hief Tournament Officer, Canada, for FIFA World Cup 2026.</em></p> <p><em>Improvements and updates include:</em></p> <ul> <li>Adding 17,000 temporary seats to bring capacity up to the FIFA-required minimum of 45,000</li> <li>New approaches to entrances and exits</li> <li>Three new elevators to improve accessibility</li> </ul> <p>The temporary stands have <a href="https://nowtoronto.com/news/toronto-responds-to-safety-concerns-over-viral-bmo-field-temporary-seating-photo-ahead-of-fifa-world-cup/">drawn criticism online</a>, with some residents questioning their safety. But Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which operates BMO Field, says they were designed to meet FIFA’s stringent safety requirements. The City of Toronto assured the stands meet building codes and will be tested before use.</p> <p>Officials warn there will be very limited parking at the stadium. Fans are encouraged to use other transportation methods.</p> <h4>Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Toronto</h4> <ul> <li>Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at Toronto’s <a href="https://torontofwc26.ca/FIFAFanFestival">Fan Festival</a>, being held at the Bentway, a new public space under the Gardiner Expressway.</li> <li><a href="https://www.pridehousetoronto.com/">Pride House Toronto 2026</a> offers a safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub for LGBTQI+ communities.</li> </ul> <hr /><br /><span class="Icon--lge Icon--circle icon-wn-navigation"></span> <h3>Vancouver, British Columbia</h3> <p>Flanked by snow-capped mountains and the Pacific Ocean, <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/canada/vancouver">Vancouver</a> is a scenic and cosmopolitan city with a walkable downtown.</p> <p>Tragic events are not unheard of here – the city made news in April 2024, when <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vehicle-hits-crowd-filipino-festival-lapu-lapu-day-block-party-1.7519778">an SUV drove through a crowd</a> at a Lapu Lapu Day festival, killing 11 people. But Vancouver also has wide experience with hosting major sporting events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and nine matches during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.</p> <p>Security operations and infrastructure upgrades for the 2026 tournament include:</p> <ul> <li>200 temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras in areas associated with the tournament (required under Vancouver’s contract with FIFA)</li> <li>Major transit increases along <a href="https://www.translink.ca/news/2026/march/translink%20unveils%20game%20plan%20for%20fifa%20world%20cup%202026%20vancouver">Metro Vancouver’s TransLink network</a>, such as: <ul> <li>Extra bus service to routes serving the FIFA Fan Festival at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE)</li> <li>A dedicated shuttle between the PNE and main SkyTrain lines</li> <li>More frequent and extended service on the SkyTrain before and after matches</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <p>According to <a href="https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/mayor-sim-statement-on-jurisdiction-and-security-for-the-fifa-world-cup-2026.pdf">Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim</a>, security planning for the tournament will be led by the Vancouver Police Department in partnership with other Canadian law enforcement agencies. In February 2026, in response to concerns, he stated that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would not be involved in security operations.</p> <h4>BC Place</h4> <p>Vancouver will host seven FIFA World Cup matches at <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/articles/vancouver-host-seven-matches-canada-stadium-bc-place">BC Place Vancouver</a>, its iconic downtown stadium. BC Place is conveniently located a short walk from the SkyTrain. Though the stadium was upgraded for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, additional improvements are in the works for the 2026 tournament, including redesigned entrances, more elevators, and gender-neutral washrooms.</p> <p>As part of their host city agreement with FIFA, the city will create <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/how-vancouver-is-preparing-to-host-7-fifa-world-cup-games-9.7008748">a controlled area</a> of about 1.25mi (2km) around the stadium. Extra precautions will be taken in the zone to ensure public safety.</p> <h4>Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Vancouver</h4> <ul> <li>Vancouver’s <a href="https://www.vancouverfwc26.ca/fifa-fan-festival">Fan Festival</a> will be held at Hastings Park within the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) grounds.</li> <li><a href="https://pridehouseunited2026.com/vancouver/">Pride House Vancouver 2026</a> will offer game screenings, cultural events, and more.</li> </ul> <h2 id="public-transit">Public transit safety during major events</h2> <p><br /> Both Canadian host cities have extensive and reliable public transit. When I visited Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, my SkyTrain ride featured a jovial crowd of Canadians singing <em>O Canada</em>. I felt very safe, but it’s important not to let your guard down.</p> <p>Toronto and Vancouver police have warned of a rise in pickpocket thefts at <a href="https://toronto.citynews.ca/2025/06/26/toronto-cell-phone-thefts-summer-festivals/">festivals</a>, <a href="https://toronto.citynews.ca/video/2025/12/05/toronto-police-urge-vigilance-as-pickpocketing-rises-during-festive-season/">shopping malls</a>, public transit, and other crowded places.</p> <p>To avoid becoming a victim:</p> <ul> <li>Carry your phone or wallet in an inside pocket or a zipped crossbody bag kept in front of your body – not in a back pocket where it can be easily stolen without you noticing.</li> <li>Stay extra vigilant in crowded places, packed trains, and busy stations or transfer points.</li> <li>Be wary of strangers in your personal space. San Jose, CA, Los Angeles, CA, and Arlington, TX made <a href="https://smartasset.com/data-studies/americas-safest-cities-2025">SmartAsset’s</a> list of the top 10 safest cities – all are host cities or host-city adjacent. On the other hand, host cities Kansas City, MO and Philadelphia, PA were ranked #45 and #46 out of 50.</p> <p>It should also be noted that crime varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. Often, the most dangerous areas are places most tourists will never go.</p> <h3>The threat of gun violence</h3> <p>Gun laws in the US are less strict than in countries such as the UK or Australia, but regulations <a href="https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/">vary by state</a>. The US has a <a href="https://www.healthdata.org/news-events/insights-blog/acting-data/gun-violence-united-states-outlier">significantly higher rate of gun deaths</a> than most developed nations, but while mass shootings often make international headlines, these incidents make up only 1% of gun violence.</p> <p>All World Cup stadium venues will have a fenced, outer perimeter with metal detectors and security screenings at the entry points. Weapons of any kind <a href="https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/">are prohibited</a> within the perimeter, and there is a clear-bag policy for guests. Fan Festivals are expected to follow these same protocols.</p> <h3>Reliability of emergency services</h3> <p>The quality of emergency health services in the US is good, but <a href="https://www.ems1.com/public-health/study-ranks-best-and-worst-states-for-providing-urgent-medical-care">can vary from state to state</a>. Wait times in emergency rooms can be long, and the cost of care is high.</p> <h3>Visa issues</h3> <p>New regulations and executive orders from the Trump Administration have complicated matters for many international visitors.</p> <p>Residents of the 42 <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program">Visa Waiver</a> countries can apply for a visa online using the <a href="https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/">Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)</a>. Fans from other countries will require a B1/B2 visitor visa.</p> <p>The State Department has set up a <a href="https://www.state.gov/fifa-world-cup-26-visas">FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (PASS)</a> to expedite visa interviews for fans who bought their tickets directly from FIFA. However, having a ticket does not guarantee a visa will be issued. And in December 2025, Trump <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IN12631">issued a proclamation</a> suspending or limiting visas for foreign nationals from 39 countries. Several of these nations have teams participating in the World Cup. While the teams and staff will be allowed in, fans will not.</p> <p>If you are planning to travel from abroad to attend the tournament and require a visa, apply for your FIFA PASS appointment right away.</p> <h2 id="host-cities">Safety in major host cities</h2> <p>Compared to World Cup events in Mexico, sports journalist Joe Furey expects US events to skew “more corporate, tourist, and family.” Still, the participating teams and their fans will bring their own unique and unpredictable energy to every match and the events around it. And even though each US host city has experience with large sporting events, most have not hosted an event of this size and scale.</p> <p>FIFA has strict <a href="https://inside.fifa.com/innovation/stadium-guidelines/general-process-guidelines/operations/safety-and-security-operations">safety and security guidelines</a> that all host cities must follow. But the final responsibility for safety and security at the World Cup <a href="https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/fifa-safety-security-world-cup-host-cities-is-government-call--flm-2025-10-15/">falls on the federal government</a> and the host cities themselves. FIFA also requires host cities to provide adequate public transportation, health, and emergency services.</p> <p>The US federal government has allocated vast amounts of funding and other resources for the tournament, including</p> <ul> <li>$100.3 million in funding to <a href="https://www.transit.dot.gov/about/news/trumps-transportation-secretary-announces-100-million-funding-enhance-public">expand and improve public transit</a> in host cities</li> <li>$625 million in <a href="https://www.fema.gov/grants/preparedness/fifa-world-cup-grant-program">federal security funding</a> to cover law enforcement, cybersecurity, emergency response, and FIFA fan fests</li> <li>$115 million in <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/12/30/historic-announcement-fema-rapidly-awards-250-million-secure-us-skies-ahead-fifa">counter-drone technology</a></li> <li><a href="https://www.arl.noaa.gov/wp_arl/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/2025-Boundary-Matters.pdf">Advanced weather forecasting tools</a> to help mitigate heat risks for players and fans</li> </ul> <p>However, the US government shutdown has caused major delays in actually delivering the promised security funds to host cities. Many city officials expressed concerns about <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/02/26/world-cup-cities-security-funding-00801959">running out of time to prepare,</a> and some cities quietly <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/world-cup-faces-funding-issues-as-us-host-cities-quietly-scale-back-events/ar-AA1XdkEF?gemSnapshotKey=GMBE0BDFBF-snapshot-2&uxmode=ruby&cvid=69b8627eb7934bf48e3173229f41f916&ei=15">scaled back their Fan Festivals or planned events</a>.</p> <p>On March 12, the Department of Homeland Security finally <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/12/dhs-signs-off-on-world-cup-security-funding-a-day-after-trump-infantino-meeting-00826715">signed off on release of the funds</a>. But host cities may still need to scramble to get all their security measures and staff in place.</p> <h3>ICE at the World Cup</h3> <p>According to acting director Todd Lyons, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will form a “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7038337/2026/02/11/world-cup-usa-ice-security/">key part of the overall security apparatus</a> for the World Cup.” ICE officials have said their role at major events is intelligence coordination rather than immigration enforcement. However, at the time of writing, the Trump Administration had not ruled out conducting ICE raids at World Cup matches.</p> <p>On March 18, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7130431/2026/03/19/world-cup-2026-ice-bills-congress/">members of Congress introduced bills</a> to prevent immigration enforcement within a mile of World Cup stadiums or Fan Festivals or on public transit during the tournaments, but passage of these bills is uncertain. For now, fans should expect an ICE presence in all US host cities.</p> <p>Fans, whether visiting or local, should steer clear of protests or altercations involving ICE. Non-American citizens are advised to carry proof of their legal status – including passports and visas – with them to the tournament.</p> <h3>Public transit in World Cup cities</h3> <p>While the US is not as well known for its transit systems as many other nations, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/23/fifa-world-cup-transportation-00698551">most of the host cities offer direct public transport to the stadium</a>. In the others, fans will need to rely on shuttles or city buses, but these services have been added or expanded for the tournament.</p> <h3>Stadium upgrades and security</h3> <p>Most of the stadiums that will be used for the World Cup in the US were built for “American” football and usually host NFL games. They are all undergoing modifications to accommodate the wider pitch used in soccer, as well as improvements for better accessibility and traffic flow. No matter the venue:</p> <ul> <li>Security will be strict, with a 2.5m (8ft) perimeter fence and a buffer zone surrounding each stadium</li> <li>There are <a href="https://digitalhub.fifa.com/m/50ebae81c412b7d5/original/FIFA-World-Cup-2026-Stadium-Code-of-Conduct.pdf">rules about what you can bring inside</a>, such as: <ul> <li>Bags must be made of clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and no larger than 12in x 6in x 12in (30cm x 15cm x 30cm). If your bag doesn’t meet requirements, be aware that bag check may not be available.</li> <li>Political signage is not allowed.</li> <li>Loud noisemaking devices such as vuvuzelas are not permitted.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <h3>Fan Festivals and Fan Zones</h3> <p>Most of the cities will host a large (and likely free) FIFA Fan Festival and several smaller Fan Zones where fans without a ticket to that day’s match can gather to watch the game. Their Fan Festival will be held at Centennial Olympic Park. But the time for enforcement has finally come, as of May 2025. Without it, you may now face additional screenings, delays, or charges.</p> <h2 id="how">How do I get REAL ID?</h2> <p>You can get REAL ID at your local driver’s licensing agency (DMV, BMV, etc.). The documents you’ll need vary from state to state but at minimum, they include documentation that shows:</p> <ul> <li>Full legal name</li> <li>Date of birth</li> <li>Social Security Number</li> <li>Two proofs of your current address</li> <li>Lawful status (whether you are lawfully authorized to live permanently within the US)</li> </ul> <p>Visit the website of <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/real-id" target="_blank">your local DMV</a> to find out if further documents are required.</p> <p>It’s also highly recommended to make an appointment for your license renewal.</p> <p><em>Planning a domestic trip? This confirms your identity so you can still fly, but it takes extra time and costs money.</p> <h2 id="passport">Can I use a passport or other forms of ID instead?</h2> <p>A passport is an <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification" target="_blank">acceptable alternative</a> to REAL ID. For domestic travel you will need REAL ID or a passport, but not both.</p> <p>But you can’t use REAL ID for international travel. A groundbreaker at the time, Footprints allows World Nomads and Travel Insurance Direct customers to give a microdonation to a project of their choice when they buy a <a href="/travel-insurance">travel insurance policy</a>. Since its launch, Footprints has funded <a href="/responsible-travel/footprints/projects/?status=open">274 community development and conservation projects</a> around the world and raised AUD $5.7 million dollars (World Nomads and TID combined).</p> <p>We spoke to World Nomads and Footprints co-founder Simon Monk about the inspiration behind the program and how it has evolved over the years.</p> <p><em><strong>WN: You were a founder of World Nomads in 2002. Can you talk about what inspired you to start the Footprints program in 2005?</strong></em></p> <p>SM: Nomads was a couple of years old by that stage – we had a handful employees in a tiny office in Sydney. And, on the news was the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/indian-ocean-tsunami-anniversary-photo-gallery-65a5fdaeed08d68336523e7e4a4835a2" target="_blank">huge Asian tsunami</a> that killed over a quarter of a million people [in December 2004]. All of us were travelers, and it affected us deeply because we could see all these villages that we’d been to over the years, and they had no means of dealing with anything so catastrophic. So, we said, what can we possibly do?</p> <p>We decided to use our skill set, which was in internet and travel, to try to raise some funds. That was the genesis of the idea. And then I came back in the morning, and said, “Right, let’s just add a $2 donation as a check box in the purchase path.” And off we went! At this stage, the [money raised] just went into a relief fund for the tsunami.</p> <p><em><strong>WN: And you ended up raising quite a bit right away.</strong></em></p> <p>SM: Yes, we surpassed [our initial goal of $50,000] pretty quickly, like in a few weeks, I suppose. And we went, wow, we’ve really got something here.</p> <p><em><strong>WN: And once you were done funding that cause, the idea was to keep going and continue to support causes around the world?</strong></em></p> <p>SM: I suppose what really resonated was that we’d built something that connected with our travelers. It was beyond our imaginings of how successful it would be in terms of engagement. So, rather than just putting $2 into a bucket, we decided to give our travelers the choice of where they wanted their money to go. And that evolved into a process of choosing and funding particular projects. So, you might [set a goal of] $4,500 to fund a school in a particular village. Image credit: SurfAid</figcaption><figcaption></figcaption></figure> <p><em><strong>WN: How did you initially decide which projects to fund?</strong></em></p> <p>SM: We originally toyed with the idea of funding schools ourselves, but it’s not our core expertise. And when you think, for example, about digging wells in villages, it seems a very tangible outcome but the more you speak to NGOs in this arena, you discover those aren’t the issues at all. [Through the <a href="/responsible-travel/footprints/who-we-fund/wateraid">organization WaterAid</a> we learned] it’s not just providing the water, it’s educating the children about sanitation, in local language. So, we worked in partnership with NGOs who were more experienced in this space.</p> <p><em><strong>WN: All Footprints projects are aligned with one or more of the United Nations <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals" target="_blank">Sustainable Development Goals</a>. What was behind the decision to do that?</strong></em></p> <p>SM: You can’t fund everything, so you need some guidelines to choose what to fund. With the best will in the world, I try to stay out of the way and let the agencies get on with it, but occasionally I’ve been invited, and it’s always a pleasure and it’s always humbling. You’re treated to hospitality by people who have next to nothing compared to yourself.</p> <p><em><strong>WN: You left World Nomads in 2016. Were you still with Footprints at that time?</strong></em></p> <p>SM: I was still on the committee, trying to run it. Structurally, it became a bit difficult. With the best of intent, I handed it over to a team that could keep running it well.</p> <p>In any program when you raise money, there are governance issues around how funds are allocated. If you say you’re going to raise money for an organization then you need to have the proof you’re actually doing what you said you’re going to do.</p> <p><em><strong>WN: 2025 marks the 20-year anniversary of the Footprints program. We’ve completed 274 projects and raised more than $5.7 million from more than 2 million travelers. How do you feel about meeting these milestones?</strong></em></p> <p>SM: Slightly surreal, I suppose. 2 million travelers, that’s an awful lot of donors.</p> <p>I suppose the proudest thing is, when you build a service like World Nomads, you build it to try and take a segment of the market that is like you. Or in this case, like me – I’m a keen, adventurous, independent traveler. I built a service for me and discovered there’s lots of people globally who are of similar mind. And it’s basically the same with Footprints. What happens is you fund a project, and once the goal is reached, it’s closed. And then two years later, you can actually go to the 3,163 people who funded it and tell them what the outcome was! Bratislava, Slovakia</h2> <p>Overshadowed by the larger nearby cities of Prague, Vienna, and Budapest, this European capital has been experiencing a quiet renaissance. With its compact, walkable old town, its imposing Baroque castle on a hill above the river, and its variety of museums and galleries, Bratislava is well worth a day trip but could easily fill several days.</p> <p>You’ll want time to sample Slovak food like <em>bryndzové halu&scaron;ky</em> (potato and cheese dumplings), seek out the quirky street sculptures dotted around the city, and <a href="https://www.u-f-o.sk/en/ufo-vstup-na-vyhliadku.html" target="_blank">enjoy the views from the “UFO Tower”</a> above Most SNP, the iconic bridge crossing the Danube. And if you want more castles, 1,000-year-old Devin Castle, just a few miles outside Bratislava, is an important archaeological site.</p> <p>Bratislava is easily accessible from Vienna, an hour by train or <a href="https://twincityliner.com/en" target="_blank">1.5 hours by ferry</a>. Public transit within the city is easy, too. And it’s one of the least expensive major European cities that use the Euro as currency.</p> <h2 id="ang-thong">2. Ang Thong National Marine Park, Thailand</h2> <p>While Koh Samui is one of the most-visited places in Thailand, there’s a quiet paradise just to the east – <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/southeast-asia/thailand/off-the-beaten-path-thailand#beaches">Ang Thong National Marine Park</a>. Lying between Ko Samui and the mainland, this archipelago of 42 uninhabited islands is so stunning, it was the inspiration for Alex Garland’s novel <em>The Beach</em>.</p> <p>The islands can only be reached by boat from Koh Samui or Koh Pha Ngan. To avoid the crowds on the larger boats, hire a speed boat (or even better, a private charter) which will allow you access to hidden coves and beaches.</p> <p>For even more seclusion, stay overnight in a tent or bungalow on Ko Wua Talap, the main island. Zambia</h2> <p>Zambia is known as the birthplace of the walking <a href="/travel-insurance/activities/safari">safari</a>. Conservationist <a href="https://legendsandlegaciesofafrica.org/normancarr.php" target="_blank">Norman Carr</a> began offering this experience to guests at Chibembe Safari Camp in the late 1960s. Tracking animals on foot and exploring the bush and its wildlife up close is very different than sitting in a vehicle.</p> <p>While Zambia is far from the only place to offer walking safaris these days, there are other advantages. Ha Giang Province, Vietnam</h2> <p>Vietnam’s hill tribes are well known for their traditional handicrafts and colorful costumes. Travelers flock to regions like Sapa to <a href="/travel-insurance/activities/hiking-travel-insurance">hike between villages</a> and learn about the local culture. But this popularity has meant a loss of authenticity, with some “villages” being created just to cater to tourists.</p> <p>For a more genuine experience, head to Ha Giang Province in Vietnam’s far north. There’s still an untouched quality to these villages, home to ethnic groups such as Hmong, Tay, and Dao.</p> <p>Says World Nomads’ own Meghan Nelson, “The Ha Giang Loop was the highlight of our trip to Northern Vietnam. I can’t overstate how unique and diverse this province is. We spent four days winding through lush mountains and rice fields, swimming in caves and under waterfalls, and getting a glimpse of how remote ethnic minorities live. No two days were the same, as the scenery and people seemed to change around every turn.”</p> <p>To get there, take a bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang City. From there, hire a licensed local driver to take you around by motorbike (be sure to wear a helmet). Calabria, Italy</h2> <p>Occupying the toe of Italy’s boot, Calabria may be one of the only places along the country’s southern coastline where you can still find gorgeous beaches without crowds. The scenic “Coast of the Gods” along the Tyrrhenian Sea lives up to its lofty nickname, while the town of Tropea, perched on a cliff above the sea, was named Italy’s most beautiful village in 2021 – no small achievement.</p> <p>And that’s just one of its coastlines – there’s also the Ionian Sea on the other side.</p> <p>But there’s <a href="/explore/europe/italy/calabria-destinations-discover-the-wild-italy">more to Calabria than beaches</a>. The region is also home to three national parks, filled with rugged mountains, canyons, and lakes. Nicaragua’s Pacific coast</h2> <p>With sandy beaches, world-class surf breaks, and rainforests filled with tropical birds, monkeys, and other wildlife, Nicaragua offers many of the same draws as Costa Rica, its more popular neighbor to the south.</p> <p>In 2025, these little-known Nicaraguan treasures will be easier to discover and enjoy. A new coastal highway, the Carratera Costanera, is currently being built along the Pacific shoreline – it will help improve access to excellent surfing in spots like San Juan del Sur, Playa Remanso, and Popoyo. Slovenia</h2> <p>Sandwiched between Italy, Croatia, and Austria, Slovenia has many of the same things to offer – majestic alpine scenery, charming, red-roofed coastal towns, excellent food and wine. Costalegre, Mexico</h2> <p>Mexico’s “Happy Coast,” which stretches along the Pacific from <a href="/travel-safety/north-america/mexico/puerto-vallarta-safety-guide">Puerto Vallarta</a> to Manzanillo, is a place of abundant natural beauty, home to pristine beaches, dense jungle, and vast nature preserves. It has remained untouched due largely to its inaccessibility (the closest airports are a 4-hour drive away). That will change with the new Chalacatepec Airport in Jalisco. Inaugurated in late 2024, the airport will initially cater to chartered flights, though there are plans to open it to international commercial flights.</p> <p>Will this mean the Costalegre will be unspoiled no more? Fortunately, development here has happened with an eye to sustainability, with resorts and communities working together to protect the local biodiversity. Cape Froward, Chilean Patagonia</h2> <p>Chilean Patagonia is best known for the cathedral-like peaks of Torres del Paine and for the iconic W Trek that circles its base. But this epic national park has gotten overrun in recent years. Fortunately, there are a multitude of other parks to choose from. <a href="/explore/south-america/chile/exploring-chiles-route-of-parks">Chile’s “Route of Parks”</a> features 17 parks along its 1,700 miles, all strung like pearls between the mountains and coast. Crowds are fewer here, but the landscapes are no less spectacular.</p> <p>The next park to join the route will be <a href="https://www.rewildingchile.org/en/projects/cape-froward-national-park-project/" target="_blank">Cape Froward</a>, the southernmost point of mainland South America. This is Chile’s newest national park, a sub-Antarctic region housing a number of endangered species, including huemel deer and sei whales. It’s also the ancestral territory of the indigenous Kawésqar people. Travelers who make the journey will be surrounded by raw, rugged nature and ancient culture. The LGBTQ+ travel market generated an estimated <a href="https://www.traveldailymedia.com/lgbtqia-travel-remains-a-growth-sector-in-2025/">US$357 billion in 2025</a>, and with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%, could reach US$640 billion by 2032.</p> <p>But that doesn’t mean those travels are always friendly and inclusive. A <a href="https://news.booking.com/from-planning-to-personas-bookingcom-research-reveals-how-lgbtq-travelers-are-taking-control-of-their-trips">2024 poll by Booking.com</a> found that 59% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travelers have experienced discrimination when traveling.</p> <p>So, what can LGBTQ+ travelers do to help ensure a safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free trip? <br /> <br /> Our most important pieces of advice are to:</p> <ul> <li>Know and abide by the local laws regarding homosexuality</li> <li>Be mindful of local customs and social norms</li> <li>Use discretion in destinations that are less tolerant of LGBTQ+ people</li> </ul> <p>Read on for our complete list of tips and resources for navigating challenging situations and traveling with confidence.</p> <h2>What are the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers?</h2> <p>According to the <a href="https://spartacus.gayguide.travel/gaytravelindex.pdf">Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026</a>, the top 10 most tolerant and welcoming countries are Iceland, Malta, Spain, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Portugal, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland.</p> <p>The least tolerant countries are Afghanistan, Chechnya, <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/middle-east/saudi-arabia/a-guide-to-saudi-law-and-customs">Saudi Arabia</a>, Iran, and Yemen.</p> <h2>Is it safe to travel to places where being LGBTQ+ is a crime?</h2> <p>There is no single, or simple, answer to this question. According to the <a href="https://www.humandignitytrust.org/">Human Dignity Trust</a>, 65 countries currently have laws prohibiting homosexuality. But how strictly these laws are enforced and how serious the penalties are can vary from country to country. </p> <p>And even within a country that criminalizes or discriminates against homosexuality, attitudes and enforcement can vary. Large, cosmopolitan cities are often more tolerant and may have their own active LGBTQ+ communities. Tourist destinations may also be more accepting.</p> <p>But wherever you go, it’s important to research the laws and social customs ahead of time.</p> <p><a href="https://www.geoex.com/meet-the-team">Jesse Knight</a>, a Trip Designer with <a href="https://www.geoex.com/">Geographic Expeditions</a>, says that before choosing a destination, he reviews government regulations and gathers anecdotal insight about the local climate. “I don’t specifically seek out or avoid destinations based on their attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people, though I may hesitate to visit countries actively passing anti-gay legislation,” he told us. “If choosing between countries with similar experiences, I prefer to support destinations that align with my values.</p> <p>“That said, as a world traveler, you’ll inevitably visit places where political values differ from your own. In those cases, supporting gay-friendly businesses is one way to use your economic influence intentionally.</p> <p>“I also believe in looking for the good in people. Being a thoughtful ambassador – whether as an American, LGBTQ+ traveler, or however you identify – can help broaden perspectives. Tourism creates exposure, and exposure often fosters understanding.”</p> <h2>How can you protect yourself when traveling in a country that isn’t friendly to LGBTQ+ visitors?</h2> <p>Some travelers prefer to visit LGBTQ+-friendly countries where they can relax and be fully themselves. But that can mean missing out on iconic and beautiful places in less-tolerant countries. If you do choose to visit a less-friendly destination:</p> <ul> <li>Understand the local laws. Research your destination to find out if homosexuality is illegal, what is considered a crime, and how strict the penalties are. Human Dignity Trust offers a <a href="https://www.humandignitytrust.org/lgbt-the-law/map-of-criminalisation/">detailed map of countries that criminalize LGBTQ+ people</a>.</li> <li>Use discretion. In more conservative countries, the LGBTQ+ community may choose to keep a low profile, even if homosexuality is legal. Be mindful of the local culture and dress codes and avoid drawing too much attention or openly discussing your orientation.</li> <li>Avoid public displays of affection. In countries where homosexuality is criminalized, hugging, kissing, or holding hands with someone of the same sex may be illegal and put you at risk of fines or imprisonment. Says Knight, “I avoid PDA even in private transfers or on trains. This is partly out of respect for local culture and partly out of an abundance of caution. I may also request two queen beds to make it less obvious that I’m traveling with a partner.”</li> <li>Read the room. As <em>Women’s Media Center</em> columnist <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/about/contributors/marcie-bianco">Marcie Bianco</a> told us, even in places where homosexuality is legal but less tolerated, it might be smarter to leave people guessing about your relationship. Follow cultural cues – are people staring or glaring? Is there a sense of negative energy in the room? If so, this may not be the time for canoodling.</li> <li>Make a plan. Says Bianco, “Following cultural cues demands that you and your partner be on the same page. This means understanding your plan for responding to any unforeseen negative circumstances. For example, if someone accosts or verbally abuses you, it’s often safer to disengage.”</li> <li>Be wary of using dating apps. Authorities in countries with anti-LGBTQ+ laws have used apps such as Grindr and other digital platforms to entrap and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Criminals may extort LGBTQ+ app users by threatening to “out” them or report them to police. And hate groups may use apps or social media to lure users to unsafe locations.</li> </ul> <h2>What are some planning resources for LGBTQ+ travelers?</h2> <p>Destinations that tout their LGBTQ+-friendliness might still present uncomfortable moments for LGBTQ+ couples. Bianco highly recommends seeking out accommodations, nightlife, and activities that cater to LGBTQ+ travelers – these can help you feel safer and make your adventures more inclusive and enjoyable.</p> <ul> <li>Search out websites or articles by LGBTQ+ travel bloggers and journalists that share places to go and LGBTQ+-specific annual events and activities.</li> <li>Use platforms such as <a href="https://www.misterbandb.com/">misterb&b</a> to find LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, or use the <a href="https://www.everywhereisqueer.com/">Everywhere is Queer</a> app to find queer-owned businesses and safe spaces.</li> <li>Discover LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, tour operators, travel agents, and events through the <a href="https://www.iglta.org/">International LGBTQ+ Travel Association</a> (IGLTA).</li> </ul> <h2>How will new passport requirements affect LGBTQ travelers?</h2> <p>When traveling, it’s important that your passport and ID (driver’s license, etc.) match your current name and gender identity and have an accurate gender marker. This will smooth your way through immigration and airport security and help streamline the visa process if you need one.</p> <p>Some things to keep in mind:</p> <ul> <li>Some countries only recognize Male and Female gender markers on official documents. These countries may treat “X” (non-binary/unspecified) passports as invalid and/or deny entry. Visa applications or travel permits may also be denied.</li> </ul> <p><a href="https://www.safetravel.govt.nz/before-you-go/who-is-travelling/lgbtqia-travellers">Safetravel</a> recommends that travelers contact the embassy or consulate of their intended destination to confirm if passports with “X” gender identifiers will be accepted.</p> <ul> <li>If your current gender presentation doesn’t match your passport or ID, consider <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-renew-your-passport">updating your documents</a>. If that’s not possible, carrying a copy of your official gender marker change order may be helpful if you’re questioned.</li> <li>As of early 2025, the US Department of State <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/sex-marker.html">no longer issues US passports with an “X” marker</a>. Applicants must now select either Male (“M”) or Female (“F”) corresponding to their biological sex at birth.</li> <li>Existing passports using the “X” marker will still be valid for travel until they expire. The reason isn’t a lack of drive or ideas, but a lack of support and access to technology, education, and training, as stated by the <a href="https://www.e-unwto.org/doi/book/10.18111/9789284420384" target="_blank">UNWTO’s Second Report on Women in Tourism</a>.</p> <p>Tourism professional Iris Serbanescu became increasingly aware of this disparity during her 10 years in the industry and saw the issue increase during the COVID pandemic when women disproportionately were let go or had to leave their jobs to take care of their families.</p> <p>She also noticed another disparity for non-binary folks in the industry – and was inspired to create a program for those who wanted to start their own tourism businesses.</p> <p>“In my own experience, there was no formal support system for anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary who was new to their business journey,” said Serbanescu.</p> <p>“<a href="https://wmnswork.com/" target="_blank">wmnsWORK</a> is the industry’s first global, virtual, equity-free business accelerator created specifically for women and non-binary entrepreneurs in the early stages of their business,” she said.</p> <p>“Everyone has different goals and ambitions and perspectives, but the crux of the program is to help them get tangible results that elevate their business from one stage to the next.”</p> <p>wmnsWORK is a 12-week program consisting of up to 12 workshops led by industry experts and focused on three pillars: Education, Mentorship, and Support.</p> <p>“Our second cohort is wrapping up in December 2022. It has 50% more people than our first cohort, from eight participants up to 12. Thanks to sponsorships available through partners like World Nomads, we have been able to attract a much more diverse participant base from seven different countries,” said Serbanescu.</p> <p>To find out more, World Nomads sat down with Iris and Njeri Gachuhi, founder of Kenya-based <a href="https://thetravellingwakili.com" target="_blank">The Traveling Wakili</a> who attended the program thanks to a sponsorship from World Nomads.</p> <p><strong>Iris, what role did the pandemic play in the decision to start wmnsWORK?</strong></p> <p>The pandemic gave me a moment to stop and think about how the way we’ve been doing business led us to this point. All my perspectives from my years in the travel industry boiled down to one solution: I have to help women who want to start businesses post-pandemic, because out of great crisis comes the biggest opportunity, and I want to create something I wish I had.</p> <p>Because a lot of travel businesses have unfortunately not weathered the pandemic storm, now might be the best time for new players to enter the market, take the reins, and do things their own way.</p> <p><strong>You’ve been in the travel industry for 10 years. How did you get into travel?</strong></p> <p>It’s a full-circle moment for me – I used to work in insurance. I was a Jr. risk broker, on a management fast-track program. But I had just spent a semester in Paris, and I was truly transformed by that experience. When I thought about where my passion in life really lay, it was in travel, and I had to turn it into a career somehow.</p> <p><strong>What are the primary skills or areas of knowledge you feel entrepreneurs need to have in order to succeed?</strong></p> <p>It depends on the type of business they’re running, and where in the world they’re based. But overall, a good baseline knowledge of business principles, how their business is going to make money and how it will sustain itself, or grow if that’s the goal, year over year.</p> <p>One of the many benefits of the program is breaking down the business plan, the financials, and the pitch deck into workshops with experts that can help them build on those three main things. The business plan can help you get clear on what you want to build, the financials will help answer the question of “how will my business make money?” and the pitch deck will give you a sense of what problem you are solving and how you’re going to talk to people about it.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/responsibletravel/wmnswork/turkana.jpg" alt="A group of travelers in Turkana County in northern Kenya." /> <figcaption>One of The Traveling Wakili's group trips to northern Kenya. Are these primarily virtual workshops?</strong></p> <p>The workshops are 100 percent virtual. Every week, we have a different workshop on a different topic, taught by a subject matter expert in that topic. They’re designed so the members have tangible takeaways that they can implement into their businesses.</p> <p>There’s also a mentorship program where I match everyone up with their own mentor who’s a good personality fit, fits the criteria the mentee is looking for, and ideally has experience running the same kind of business the mentee is hoping to start.</p> <p><strong>Aside from the skills they’re learning, what benefits are your cohort members gaining from the program?</strong></p> <p>I look at wmnsWORK as a long-term investment in your business. The experts that you meet, the mentors, alumni, the fellow participants in your cohort – those can lead to great revenue-generating partnerships down the line. The network is really key because the biggest hurdle when people join a new industry or start a new business is that they feel really alone. That feeling of community and learning from each other is not something that’s easy to create on your own. wmnsWORK is a place to get your questions answered, build your network, and get benefits that outlast your time in the program.</p> <p><strong>Njeri, can you tell us a bit about your business? What does “Wakili” mean?</strong></p> <p>Wakili means “lawyer” in Swahili – my educational background is in law. So, it’s “the Traveling Lawyer.” I got into doing this because I really enjoy doing solo trips. I would show my travels on Instagram and people would say, “Oh, that looks really interesting. Next time, can I come?” So, in 2019 I put together a plan for New Year, put it on the internet, said, “This is what we’re going to do, this is what it’s going to cost. Come if you are serious.” And people came.</p> <p><strong>What is your vision for your business?</strong></p> <p>I want to be a household name, within East Africa particularly, for curating group trips that have a focus on women and queer travel. I want the business to grow beyond just me. I’m the one who leads all the trips, I’m doing everything. But I already feel it’s bigger than me.</p> <p><strong>How did you find out about wmnsWORK?</strong></p> <p>I had been following the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, and they liked or shared the wmnsWORK program on LinkedIn. I had been thinking of joining an accelerator program because I was already feeling I needed the support. And I wanted to build my confidence in speaking about the business side of things.</p> <p><strong>What are the most important things you’ve gotten out of the program so far?</strong></p> <p>Oh, it’s been a lot. To start with, it’s meeting other people doing the same thing as you and having that type of community where you’re bouncing ideas. It’s been great having that support, that level of accountability. And every single session we have, I feel like I gain so much, and then I realize, I also have so much to do! It’s great because it’s been pushing me on all the different fronts. The biggest one was developing my story and how to pitch myself. And the business plan as well – I feel like I had a business plan in my mind, but it was really important to see how to actually write that down.</p> <p><strong>How do you anticipate incorporating those learnings and insights into your business?</strong></p> <p>There are already two things I’ve started incorporating. I’m almost through with my 2023 calendar and I’m going to have almost double the trips I had this year. It’s 100 percent because of being in the program that I feel like 1) I’ll be able to do as many trips as I put in place and 2) I’m going to grow the team. So, starting in January I’m going to look for someone to join me. And I’ve made a few connections I’m going to pursue when it comes to B2B collaborations with different travel agencies that aren’t based in Kenya, so I can be the ground person in Kenya.</p> <p><strong>Can you tell us a bit about your mentor? </strong></p> <p>My mentor has a travel company that’s based in Uganda – he’s a queer African man. I feel like it was a very great fit for the two of us, because one of the top things I wanted out of a mentor is someone who has some experience in queer travel in Africa. I particularly loved that it was a person born and raised in Africa.</p> <p><strong>What kind of community have you developed with the other entrepreneurs in the program? </strong></p> <p>I absolutely love the fact that we are very few, and we’re very diverse. I know almost everyone’s business to where I could explain it to someone else, so if someone said they were looking for someone in Peru, I know exactly who I would [recommend]. There are even people who haven’t started their businesses yet, and there are some who’ve launched their businesses while in the program, and we’ve all been able to give feedback and cheer each other on.</p> <p><strong>What would you tell entrepreneurs who are thinking about applying to the wmnsWORK program?</strong></p> <p>I would say it’s 100 percent value for money. I’m not just saying that because I got sponsored. Even if that had not come my way, [I would say that]. I think Iris did a really good job coming up with the program, the timetable, the communication, and the pairing with the mentor – you can feel this is someone who took time. It’s not this blanket program where you feel you’re reading a textbook. It feels like it’s carefully curated for you.</p> <p><strong>Iris, how can travelers help support women and non-binary entrepreneurs?</strong></p> <p>We’re at the place we are in the travel industry because of decisions we’ve made in the past around power and money. My invitation to anyone reading the article is to question how they can break down the barriers and change the systems in their own micro way – in their communities, in their workplaces, all those oppressive systems that have contributed to this massive disparity in female leadership and ownership.
