Photo credit: Mark Whitman, Kandoo Adventures</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="boudanath">Spin the prayer wheels at Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu</h2> <p>Built in the 14th century and located in the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu, this temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet<a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/things-to-do-in-kathmandu">.</a></p> <p>The entire structure is designed in the shape of a Mandala, representing a microcosm of the universe.</p> <p>Explore the grounds – clockwise – and spin the prayer wheels inscribed with the famous mantra of <em>Avalokiteshvara</em> (<em>Om Mani Padme Hum</em>) to spread some good karma. Photo credit: Elen Turner</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="pokhara">Cycle around Phewa Tal in Pokhara</h2> <p>With nine lakes, Pokhara lives up to its label of “City of Lakes”, but Phewa Tal is no doubt its main attraction. Rent a bike from any of the local stores and cycle around the lakeshore to take in the tranquil scenery.</p> <p>Here, you’ll see a variety of native birds, with a panoramic backdrop of rolling hills and the Himalayas.</p> <p>If you have more than a day here, take one of the brightly painted <em>doongas</em> (boats) and stop off at the Barahi Temple.</p> <p>Situated in the center of the lake, it’s built in honor of the deity <em>Ajima</em>, and the locals regularly make the trip on Saturday to worship her.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/pokhara-mountain-biking.jpg" alt="Mountain biking in Pokhara" /><figcaption>Mountain biking Pokhara. Photo credit: Samantha McMahon</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="durbar">Wander through Patan’s Durbar Square</h2> <p>The oldest of the <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/temples-and-cultural-must-sees-in-nepal">three UNESCO World Heritage-listed Durbar Squares</a>, Patan Durbar Square is situated in the center of Patan, also known as Lalitpur.</p> <p>As one of the oldest known Buddhist cities, the Royal Palace is best known for its artistic prowess.The numerous temples and idols within the square’s three main courtyards (or “<em>Chowks</em>”) are masterpieces of Newari art and architecture.</p> <p>Spend an afternoon wandering through these royal grounds and visit the street markets around Durbar Square.</p> <p>With almost half the local population working as craftsmen, it’s a paradise of Nepalese handicrafts and a great way to funnel tourism dollars directly to the local people.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/deepwali-market-marigold-elen-turner.jpg" alt="Durbar Square markets" /><figcaption>Deepwali Market. Photo credit: Elen Turner</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="cuisine">Get a taste of authentic Nepalese food</h2> <p>Thanks to its wonderful cultural and geographic diversity, <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/eat-your-way-through-nepal">Nepalese cuisine is a hodgepodge of lip-smacking, fiery dishes that are rich in spices and bursting with flavor.</a></p> <p>More often than not, the ubiquitous <em>dal bhat</em> – a big plate of steamed rice served with delicious accoutrements of stir-fried vegetables, meat curries, spiced potatoes, and salads – will be on the menu.</p> <p>As will the meat-filled dumplings, <em>Momos</em>, the second crown jewel in Nepalese cuisine.</p> <p>If you’re looking for more “everyday” local flavors, try <em>choyla</em>. This renowned Newari specialty is an appetizer made with grilled meat, typically buffalo, but chicken and other forms of meat are also common.</p> <p>Pair it with <em>Tongba</em>, a naturally fermented millet alcohol, served in long bamboo canisters, and you’ll earn bragging rights to have tasted authentic Nepalese food.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/nepali-thali-prathap-nair.jpg" alt="Dal Bhat" /><figcaption>A delicious Nepali thali meal. Photo credit: Prathap Nair</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="bandipur">Spend a day exploring Bandipur</h2> <p>Bandipur, located midway between Kathmandu and Pokhara, is an enchanting hilltop settlement that was once an important stop on the India-Tibet trade route.</p> <p><a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-kathmandu">Bandipur is a beautiful place to see traditional Newari culture.</a> The town’s winding lanes are dotted with 18th century architecture and teaming with farmers and traders going about their daily business on foot.</p> <p>Spend a day wandering through the local streets, temples, and bazars to soak up the unique culture.</p> <p>Make sure you take your camera with you – views of the Himalayan range are incredible from up here, especially at sunset or sunrise on a clear day, where you can also see the Marsyanngdi River Valley.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/weather-in-nepal-chris-potter.jpg" alt="View from Bandipur, Nepal" /><figcaption>The view from Bandipur, Nepal. Photo credit: Chris Potter</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="safari">Go on safari in Bardia National Park</h2> <p>You’ve heard of South Africa’s Big Five, but Bardia National Park – perhaps Nepal’s best kept secret – is home to the Big Three: Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and the greater one-horned rhinoceros.</p> <p>Located in the Terai Region in the far west of Nepal, Bardia is Nepal’s largest national park and wilderness area.</p> <p>Covering 374 mi<sup>2</sup> (968 km<sup>2</sup>) of sal forests, grasslands, and savannahs, it’s home to more than 50 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and over 125 recorded species of fish.</p> <p>It’s also far less tourist-focused than the popular Chitwan National Park and the well-known white water rafting paradise, Karnali River, is running close by.</p> <p>So, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, don’t leave Bardia off your itinerary and aim to spend 4-5 nights here.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/rhino-chitwan1-elen-turner.jpg" alt="Greater one-horned rhino" /><figcaption>A rhino in Chitwan National Park. Photo credit: Elen Turner</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="homestay">Spend a night in a homestay in Nagarkot</h2> <p>If a glimpse of true Nepalese culture and family life is what you’re after, then there’s nothing like spending a night in a homestay<a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/ecotourism-in-nepal-safaris-and-homestays">.</a></p> <p>Just an hour’s drive from Kathmandu, and surrounded by rainforests and waterfalls, Nagarkot is the perfect place to combine sight-seeing and an unforgettable cultural experience.</p> <p>For between USD $5-$30 a night, you’ll have a basic but comfortable room and the chance to immerse yourself in the day-to-day lives of your host family.</p> <p>Many homestays also offer guided tours, meditiation, and (best of all) authentic home-cooked Nepalese food.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/annapurna-homestay-elen-turner.jpg" alt="Annapurna homestay" /><figcaption>A homestay in the Annapurna region. Due to climate change, the monsoon season has moved closer to autumn in recent years. This means the rain can sometimes keep pouring until the end of October.</p> <p>Dry season is the season of clear skies, crops harvesting and, quite often, freezing cold up in the mountains.</p> <p>The temperature in Nepal can range from <span>-</span><span>5°F (</span>-15°C) at the high passes in winter, and up to 104°F (40°C) plus in the Terai – the southern plains in summer.</p> <h2 id="best-season-to-trek">Best season to trek in Nepal</h2> <p>There are two time slots when the weather is ideal <a href="/travel-insurance/activities/hiking-travel-insurance">for trekking</a>.</p> <p>Traditionally, the most popular time is called “high touristic season” in Nepal. This lasts for two and a half months in autumn (Oct – Dec) and two to three months in spring (March – May).</p> <h2 id="trek-autumn">Trekking in autumn</h2> <p>Autumn’s high season starts in October and ends in mid-December. Most of my treks to the Himalayas were during this time.</p> <p>Autumn brings clear skies, amazing views of the snowy mountains and dry trekking paths.</p> <p>The temperature in the valley is comfortable and warm, up to 77°F (25°C) degrees during the day, and may go below zero at night or when you’re above 11,480ft (3,500m).</p> <h2 id="wet-season">Cold season: mid-December to mid-February</h2> <p>If you visit from mid-December to mid-February it’s usually not very pleasant because of the low temperatures, but the skies are typically clear.</p> <h2 id="trek-spring">Trekking in spring</h2> <p>The second part of the peak trekking season, spring, is also spectacular. Typically, this time of year has warmer temperatures but sometimes hazy views.</p> <p>As May is the end of the dry season, expect to see some rain, which turns into snow above <span>11,480-13,100ft (</span>3,500-4,000m).</p> <p>Throughout spring, mornings are clear and sunny in the mountains, but the weather often changes rapidly from noon-2pm. <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/packing-for-a-trip-to-nepal" target="_blank">Make sure you pack plenty of layering</a> options and be ready to start your trek early to finish before the afternoon.</p> <p>Nevertheless, the <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-treks-in-nepal" target="_blank">rhododendron blossoms in the mountains</a> will be a breath-taking reward for those trekkers who come to the Himalayas in March-April.</p> <h2 id="water-pollution">Water pollution in Nepal</h2> <p>Nepal’s monsoonal climate can explain some of the beliefs and superstitions of Nepali people.</p> <p>Water in the Holy rivers are perceived to be always pure and safe. However today, this is often not the case, so always bring water purification tablets with you, or bring your own bottled water when trekking.</p> <p>Historically, all wastes and polluting substances were of organic (biological) origin, so everything decomposed and biodegraded easily during the wet and hot monsoon season.</p> <p>Today, much of the waste is man-made and doesn’t readily biodegrade. This creates an unpleasant situation in the cities, where people still put any of their rubbish in the rivers.</p> <p>Although more and more clean-up campaigns and awareness-raising programs are organised in Nepal – as well as some primitive waste-management infrastructure in the national parks – you can still find piles of litter along the trekking paths and city streets.</p> <h2 id="air-pollution">Air pollution in Nepal</h2> <p>Air pollution also exists in the cities and along the big roads. As with any major city, this is caused by the exhausts of motor vehicles.</p> <p>Another issue, which can create a discomfort or even cause respiratory problems, is the dust from the roads without hard surface or the after-earthquake ruins in the city. </p> <p>So, if you stay in <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-kathmandu" target="_blank">Kathmandu</a> or other cities for more than one day, it's worth wearing a medical mask or respirator, to protect your lungs.</p>Chris Potter 0

Many more companies run single-day trips: Equator Expeditions and Rafting Star are reliable operators.</p> <p>A particular point to take note of is the ratio of safety kayakers to rafters.</p> <p>Some companies try to save costs by reducing the number of safety kayakers, but if anything goes wrong on the water, you’ll want plenty of these guys around.</p> <h2 id="bhote-kosi-river">White-water rafting in Bhote Kosi River</h2> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/bhote-kosi-river-elen-turner.jpg" /> <figcaption>Bhote Kosi River. This popular river is open for rafting all year round.</p> <p>The landscape here is green and lush. This 8-day trip passes through high hills and dense jungle, and the rapids are mostly mid-sized.</p> <h2 id="karnali-river">Rafting the Karnali River – 10-Day Trip</h2> <p>The Karnali River runs through Nepal’s far west, which is extremely remote and underdeveloped. The ten-day trip starts with three days of almost continuous rapids, and then flattens out.</p> <p>The waters are extremely blue and clear. As the trip ends near the Bardia National Park, you can combine a Karnali River trip with a jungle safari.</p> <h2 id="tamur-river">Rafting the Tamur River – 12-Day Trip</h2> <p>If you want to combine trekking with rafting, try the 12-day Tamur River.</p> <p>The first three days involve trekking high in the mountains. Photo credit: Jamie-Leigh Hecht</figcaption></figure> <p>Attach yourself to a complete stranger, glide 8,000ft in the air surrounded by the Himalayan Mountains, and you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face.</p> <p>The 25min, winding Jeep ride up the mountain to the peak of Sarangot is an <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-adventure-activities-to-do-in-nepal" target="_blank">experience like no other</a>.</p> <p>The adrenaline begins during this ride up, with instructors pumping music through the speakers as you watch Pokhara valley get smaller and smaller while you travel higher and higher.</p> <p>Your allocated instructor gives you a <em>quick</em> run through of the procedure.</p> <p>Suddenly, you’re attached to him and you’re running off a cliff – as crazy as that sounds.</p> <p>The moment you begin to soar through the dense clouds, you’ll realize there could never be a better moment than this.</p> <h2 id="phewa-tal">2. Phewa Tal</h2> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/pokhara1-jamie-hecht.jpg" /> <figcaption>Phewa Tal. Photo credit: Jamie-Leigh Hecht</figcaption></figure> <p>With 9 lakes, Pokhara lives up to its label of the “<em>city of lakes”</em>, but Phewa Tal or Phewa Lake is the main attraction. Don’t reserve just one day for this adventure – there’s plenty to explore here.</p> <p>The local community has preserved its beauty, by restricting motorized boats from accessing the lake.</p> <p>This means that you can rent a bright, hand-crafted wooden boat and sail in tranquility.</p> <p>Here, you’ll meet a variety of native birds, with a panoramic backdrop of rolling hills and the Himalayas.</p> <p>Don’t miss a small stop-off at the Barahi Temple, situated in the centre. It was built in honor of the deity <em>Ajima</em>, and the locals regularly make the trip on Saturday to worship her.</p> <h2 id="mystical-caves">3. Mystical caves</h2> <p>Caves hold secrets, history, and mystery. Sita, Gupteshwor, Mehendra and Devi’s Fall caves are no exception to this.</p> <p>The natural formations within these caves are precious to the locals and they regularly journey inside to worship.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/pokhara2-jamie-hecht.jpg" /> <figcaption>Views on the way to Mystical Caves. It’s definitely worth the long walk up the stone-cut staircase. Photo credit: Jase Wilson</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="boudhanath">Boudhanath</h2> <p>Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest spherical stupas in all of Nepal, and is a very important Buddhist site in Kathmandu.</p> <p>The entire structure has been designed in the shape of a mandala, which represents a microcosm of the universe.</p> <p>When you're there, <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/etiquette-and-faux-pas-in-nepal" target="_blank">walk clockwise</a> – or sunwise as it was originally referred to – around the Stupa. Here you’ll <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/packing-for-a-trip-to-nepal" target="_blank">literally find everything you need</a> for your Nepalese adventure.</p> <p>If the shopping doesn’t interest you, check out the impressive variety of restaurants.</p> <p>My personal favorites are the vegetarian-friendly vedors. <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/trekking-food-in-nepal" target="_blank">After a long trek</a>, the chocolate soufflé will blow your mind!</p> <p>Also, don’t be shy – try some <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/eat-your-way-through-nepal" target="_blank">Nepali dishes</a> at one of the many traditional restaurants. Coffee lovers can find incredible coffee and cakes at Himalayan Java.</p> <p>Inside Thamel, you can find ample amounts of live music, food, clothing, and trekking supplies, all within walking distance.</p> <h2 id="pashupatinath">Pashupatinath</h2> <p>Pashupatinath is one of the most important places in Kathmandu for Hindu people, where many of the city’s Hindus are cremated. Of course, it’s important to practice the utmost sensitivity when witnessing the cremations.</p> <p>For those who visit, you’ll find a surprisingly serene and thoughtful atmosphere, populated mostly by men clad entirely in white, with shaved heads, save for a small tuff at the back.</p> <p>These mourners will spend up to two weeks and sometimes more in the temple to grieve for their loved ones.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/pashupatinath-jase-wilson.jpg" /> <figcaption>Cremation area at Pashupatinath. It recorded a number of zero-poaching years in the last decade and its population of one-horned rhinoceros increased by 15% between 2015 and 2021.</p> <p>Now, there nearly 700 of the enormous animals in the park, and you’re practically guaranteed to see at least one — I saw <em>nine </em>on my last visit!</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/rhinos-chitwan2-elen-turner.jpg" alt="One-horned rhinoceros in Chitwan National Park, Nepal." /> <figcaption>One-horned rhinoceros. Photo credit: Elen Turner</figcaption></figure> <p>Many other animals and birds live in and around the park, including elephants, gharial crocodiles, deer, and vultures.</p> <p>There are various ways to go on safari in Chitwan, but two of my favorites are on foot or via a jeep safari.</p> <p>While many travelers flock to busy Sauraha, there's a more peaceful and eco-friendly way to experience the park, by visiting Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge.</p> <p><strong><a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/planet/why-elephant-riding-should-be-removed-from-your-list" title="Why Elephant Riding Should be Removed from Your List">Here's why we chose to avoid any elephant riding activities, and why you should too</a>.</strong></p> <h2 id="tiger-tops">Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge</h2> <p>Tiger Tops’ Tharu Lodge, on the edge of Chitwan, offers a range of lovely safari options.</p> <p>Traveling through the jungle by boat is much quieter than going in a motorized vehicle, and it disrupts the wildlife much less.</p> <p>You are more likely to see shy animals this way. Photo credit: Elen Turner</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="barauli-homestay">Barauli Community Homestay</h2> <p>Stay at the Barauli Community Homestay to learn about the local Tharu people, and experience the jungle at a slower pace.</p> <p>I took a <a href="/travel-insurance/activities/mountain-biking">sunset bicycle tour</a> down to the banks of the Narayani River. I also joined the Homestay’s jeep tour within the park, and was the only visitor. Photo credit: Elen Turner</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="bardia-national-park">Spot tigers in Bardia National Park</h2> <p>Bardia National Park, in the far west of Nepal, is much less visited than Chitwan, so offers a more rugged safari experience.</p> <p>While Royal Bengal Tigers live in various parts of Nepal, and are pretty elusive, you have a chance of spotting them here, especially February to May.</p> <p>The Karnali River runs very close to Bardia, so a unique way of experiencing this park is to combine it with a <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-whitewater-rafting-experiences-in-nepal" target="_blank">ten-day white-water rafting</a> trip down the Karnali.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/Explore/nepal/rafting-karnali-river-elen-turner.jpg" alt="Rafting on the Karnali River." /> <figcaption>Rafting on the Karnali River. It also makes for an <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-pokhara" target="_blank">excellent day trip from Pokhara</a>.</p> <p>The wetland area is home to nearly 500 bird species. It’s particularly notable for its tropical and subtropical forests.</p> <h2 id="around-kathmandu">Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park</h2> <p>If you're looking for a <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-kathmandu" target="_blank">quick trip from Kathmandu city</a>, head to Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park.</p> <p>Though split in two between Shivapuri in the north, and Nagarjun in the west, the main point of interest is Shivapuri entrance, beside the town of Budhanilkantha. Stop there to check out the <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/temples-and-cultural-must-sees-in-nepal" target="_blank">floating Vishnu statue</a> surrounded by serpents, and then hike in the park. Although extremely isolated, you can trek for three days here and not encounter a settlement or village. This ride is a unique cultural experience, as you pedal through local villages and see places that are less frequented by tourists.</p> <p>On the ride, <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/trekking-terms-and-phrases-for-nepal" target="_blank">expect to be greeted with numerous “<em>Namastes</em>”</a> from the locals, and hear local children giggling and running alongside or behind you, trying to keep up.</p> <h2 id="shivapuri-national-park">Mountain Biking in Shivapuri National Park</h2> <p>Just on the outskirts of Kathmandu is the Shivapuri National Park – <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-kathmandu" target="_blank">an excellent day trip option if you’re based in the capital</a>.</p> <p>A bike ride through Shivapuri National Park will make you forget that you are barely out of Kathmandu, as your surroundings change from city walls to <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-national-parks-to-visit-in-nepal" target="_blank">lush green forests</a>, or flying down narrow sections of single track.</p> <h2 id="pokhara">Mountain Biking Near Pokhara</h2> <p>Pokhara <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-pokhara" target="_blank">also offers numerous day trips</a> that will expose you to rugged trails and incredible views of the mountains and lakes in the region.</p> <p>If you’ve just finished a trek, enjoyed a few days realxing in Pokhara, but are now feeling ready for an adventure – hire a bike and enjoy a nice flat ride around famous Fewa Lake.</p> <p>If adventure is your thing, head into a bike shop near Lakeside and speak to the local guides who will take you to some of the more difficult local trails. Eventually, I realized he was just playful, rather than dangerous. The same could be said for the hundreds of other primates that swarm Swayambhunath, also known as Monkey Temple.</p> <p>Looming above the historic heart of Kathmandu, this is perhaps the city’s busiest tourist attraction due to its commanding architecture, mesmerizing views of the city and surrounding peaks, and the exotic allure of those cheeky monkeys. Swayambhunath is also a hugely important religious site. This 1,500-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site has long attracted Buddhist pilgrims, who climb its many stairs to pray to Lord Buddha.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/explore/nepal-landmarks/monkey-temple.jpg" alt="Swayambhunath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal." /> <figcaption>Swayambhunath, aka the Monkey Temple. Image credit: Ronan O'Connell</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="durbar">Durbar Square (Bhaktapur)</h2> <p>For more than a millennia, the pretty city of Bhaktapur (about 8mi/13km from Kathmandu) has been centered around Durbar Square. This plaza, in turn, is defined by its most commanding resident, the Palace of 55 Windows. I never stopped to count, and confirm the accuracy of that name, but this well-preserved palace kept me enthralled for hours.</p> <p>Built at the turn of the 18th century, it’s a delightful complex decorated by intricate woodwork and stonemasonry, the creative calling cards of the Newari people. Back then it housed the ruling family of the Malla Dynasty. Nowadays visitors walk between two giant lion statues to enter the site, which has been converted into the National Art Gallery, showcasing Nepalese artforms such as brasswork and Thangka paintings.</p> <h2 id="stupa">Boudhanath Stupa (Kathmandu)</h2> <p>A late afternoon storm was about to besiege Kathmandu when I peered down a narrow alley to spot a lofty, gilded tower glowing in the gloom. The deep-grey skies only made it more dramatic. Two eyes stared straight at me – painted on the base of Boudhanath, which is among the largest stupas in Nepal, and a major attraction for visitors.</p> <p>Built in the 1300s, Boudhanath is one of seven ancient structures spread through the Kathmandu Valley which collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now surrounded by small cafes, restaurants, and shops, this stupa sits atop a whitewashed dome, which also gleams in the daylight, or in the evening when Boudhanath is illuminated by spotlights.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/explore/nepal-landmarks/boudhanath-stupa.jpg" alt="Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal." /> <figcaption>Boudhanath Stupa. Image credit: Ronan O'Connell</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="shree">Shree Muktinath Temple (Mustang)</h2> <p>Few religious sites have a more memorable location than Shree Muktinath Temple. It’s setting will, quite literally, take your breath away, due to the low levels of oxygen at 12,467ft (3,800m) above sea level, deep in the snow-draped Himalayan mountains.</p> <p>It’s a holy site for Buddhists and Hindus, and adherents of both faiths have long been drawn here to see its Shaligram, a sacred form of rock. Fossils, collected from the nearby Kali Gandaki River, are believed to be the stone embodiments of Lord Vishnu.</p> <p>Shree Muktinath is also frequented by <a href="/travel-insurance/activities/hiking-travel-insurance">hikers</a>, due to its location on the Annapura Circuit, one of Nepal’s <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-treks-in-nepal">busiest trekking routes</a>. This path begins at Besisahar, about 25mi (40km) east of Pokhara city, and then ascends to the Thorung La Pass, at a startling elevation of 17,650ft (5,380m).</p> <h2 id="pashupatinath">Pashupatinath Temple (Kathmandu)</h2> <p>Pashupatinath is blessed by the sacred waters of the adjacent Bagmati River, which begins in the peaks north of Kathmandu before flowing south to India. Nepal’s holiest Hindu temple, and a key site of pilgrimage for centuries, it is so old that its exact origins aren’t clear. Some accounts place it at up to 1,500 years old.</p> <p>Pashupatinath does not allow non-Hindus to enter its inner sanctum. But by hiring a local guide, for about US $10 in addition to the US $10 entry ticket, I was shepherded through the outer buildings, which allow tourists, to the best elevated points from where I could peer down into the main temple. On a platform by the river, I saw a smoldering pile of ash. “Cremation,” my guide said, in reference this site’s long tradition of sending the dead to the afterlife.</p> <h2 id="kopan">Kopan Monastery (Budhanilkantha)</h2> <p>Residing on a forested hilltop just north of Kathmandu, Kopan Monastery is wonderfully serene. Visitors are attracted here by the tranquility or, as I was, by its bold, polychromatic design.</p> <p>This is one of the few Buddhist monasteries near the Nepalese capital which allows travelers to stay and study within the complex. I spotted several foreigners praying amid throngs of local monks while I photographed its maroon and cream exterior, and the rainbow-hued murals which cover the prayer hall.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/explore/nepal-landmarks/kopan-monastery-interior.jpg" alt="The vividly decorated interior of Kopan Monastery, Nepal." /> <figcaption>The polychromatic interior of Kopan Monastery. Image credit: Ronan O'Connell</figcaption></figure> <h2 id="changu">Changu Narayan Temple</h2> <p>The vast, verdant Kathmandu Valley stretches out beneath Changu Narayan Temple, as the Himalayan peeks loom large and frosty in the distance. Similar to Shree Muktinath, this temple is worth visiting for its dramatic location alone, perched on a forested peak, about 5,050ft (1,540m) above sea level, roughly 6mi (10km) east of Kathmandu.</p> <p>This UNESCO site, dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu, is widely considered the country’s oldest temple, dating back at least 1,600 years. That’s also the age of several of its key artefacts – a winged Garuda statue near the temple’s entrance, an inscribed stone tablet, and several weathered Hindu idols.</p> <p>The main temple building is not nearly as old, having been razed by fire in the early 1700s. But what was then built is a wonder of Nepalese craftsmanship, embellished by complex woodwork and stonemasonry.</p> <p>About an hour’s drive from downtown Kathmandu, Changu Narayan is best reached by hiring a private vehicle. To make best use of your time, do a loop north through Kopan Monastery to Changunarayan, and south back through Bhaktapur to your hotel.</p> <h2 id="manakamana">Manakamana Temple (Gandaki)</h2> <p>Many travelers fly between Kathmandu and the stunning lakeside city of <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/day-trips-from-pokhara">Pokhara</a>. I’m so happy I instead chose the seven-hour bus ride. Although it’s at times bumpy and uncomfortable, the striking views of lakes, valleys, rivers, and peaks are burned into my memory.</p> <p>Traveling by road also allows the option to stop midway at Manakamana Temple. It can be easily accessed in about 10 minutes by catching a cable car from Kurintar, alongside the Kathmandu-to-Pokhara highway. Remember to pack light, and follow these key steps:</p> <ul> <li>You’ll need layers. Your base layer should be a synthetic T-shirt, or a quick-dry, thin thermal shirt. If you’re sensitive to the sun, wear long sleeves <span>– the sun can be very strong at higher elevations.</span></li> <li>Pack clothes that are light, with fast drying fabric and good breathability.</li> <li>Wear comfortable shoes – preferably ones that you’ve already worn in.</li> <li>Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect you from the sun.</li> <li>Don’t forget the small things: gloves, a fleece hat, sun cream and a microfiber towel.</li> </ul> <p><a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-treks-in-nepal" target="_blank">If you’re reaching higher altitudes</a>, you’ll need more layers. Bring thermal shorts or trousers, a fleece jacket, and a light down jacket with a hood or down vest.</p> <p>The outer layer is very important and has to be wind and waterproof. A light membrane or soft shell jacket with a hood is your best option.</p> <p><a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/top-nepal-hikes-in-less-than-3-days" target="_blank">When hiking</a> or <a href="/explore/southern-asia/nepal/short-treks-in-nepal" target="_blank">trekking</a> below 3,500m, wear light, quick-dry trekking trousers and a T-shirt. Be prepared to put on more layers like windproof jacket and trousers when the sun goes behind the clouds or as it gets windy.</p> <p>Temperatures will drop below freezing in the mountains, even at the altitude of 3,500m, so make sure always have a second (or third!) layer with you.</p> <h2 id="pack-the-right-shoes">Packing the right shoes for a trek below 6,000m</h2> <p>Treks above 6,000m may require technical equipment, and many travel insurance companies won't cover such treks. If you are trekking below 6,000m, you’ve got three opinions for footwear. <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-pick-travel-shoes-for-your-next-adventure">Whatever shoes you decide to use for trekking</a><span>, make sure that the sole is not slippery, and has good grip on the rocks.</span></p> <h3>Mid/high trekking boots</h3> <p>Mid/high trekking boots will provide great ankle support. Get a pair with a steel cap and a solid, non-flexible sole.</p> <p>Make sure these are the right size for your foot, and are comfortable to walk in. Remember, you’ll be walking in these for 4-8 hours a day during your trek.</p> <h3>Sky running trainers</h3> <p>Some people say hiking in heavy shoes that keep your ankle stable aren’t very good, as the body loses the knowledge of keeping balance on its own.</p> <p>They recommend using lighter and softer shoes or trainers for sky running.</p> <p>If you choose to wear these, you’ll need ankle support in the form of special bandages.</p> <h3>Light trainers or sandals</h3> <p>When you come to a lodge to stay overnight, you’ll definitely want to take your shoes off and to give your tired feet some rest.</p> <p>So, you should also bring a pair of light trainers or sandals (closed-toe is best) and let your boots dry overnight.</p> <h2 id="sleeping-bags">Sleeping bags</h2> <p>Trekkers who choose to take the teahouse trek route and sleep in lodges can easily survive without a sleeping bag. Most of these lodges will provide warm blankets.</p> <p>However, your own can be beneficial, because:</p> <ul> <li>It's more hygienic.</li> <li>The lodge may be short of blankets during the high season.</li> <li>At night when the temperature drops in the mountains, you might want to use both your sleeping bag and a blanket.</li> </ul> <h2 id="backpacks-and-accessories">Backpacks and important accessories</h2> <p>If you hire a porter, a 30-40L backpack will be enough for you to pack your jacket, snacks, documents, thermos, and a bottle of water.</p> <p>If you plan to carry everything and don’t want to use a porter, you’ll need a bigger backpack.</p> <p>Find a backpack that will ergonomically distribute the load. It should have a solid frame and waterproof material to keep your back and belongings dry.</p> <p><a href="/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-choose-the-right-hiking-gear">Trekking poles</a> will also come in handy, and provide great protection for your knees when you’re walking up and downhill.</p> <h2 id="packing-and-buying-there">What to pack vs what to buy there</h2> <p>Hundreds of trekking shops in Kathmandu and Pokhara will be happy to equip you with all the necessary gear, so don’t worry if you arrive unequipped.</p> <p>However, the products you buy in Nepal are made locally and won’t last forever – it‘s likely that you’ll leave most of them there after your trek.</p> <p>There are a number of outdoor clothing shops on Tridevi Marg in Kathmandu where you can purchase the real-deal, top-quality branded gear, including fleece and GoreTex jackets, down jackets, and shirts. </p> <p>I’d highly recommend you to buy your trekking shoes well in advance and choose a trusted brand, and start breaking in your shoes for some time before coming to Nepal!</p>iStock/Popartic 0531966394 iStock Hiker girl crossing footbridge

This is perfect for the hungry trekker with a thirst for calorie replenishment!</p> <p>Most menus in Nepal consist of potato dishes, noodle dishes, soup dishes, rice dishes, bread dishes<em>, Dhal Bhat</em> dishes and egg /porridge dishes.</p> <p>It’s more of a gamble than anything else when you order. Each tea house offers different versions of the same thing and you never really know what you’re going to get till you get it. Makes sure to try the Sherpa stew though!</p> <p>Most tea houses now offer up Western-style options too, such as pizza, pasta, and steak.</p> <p>Be warned though, these are not what you would expect back home and can often be disappointing.</p> <h2 id="mealtimes">Mealtimes</h2> <p>Mealtimes are a busy affair. Trekkers from all over the area literally descend upon tea houses en masse.</p> <p>Food is operated on a first-come-first-serve basis and I always advise to order as soon as you arrive to avoid disappointment.</p> <p>Food comes out quickly and you get a lot for your money.
