Before you go, find out about ATM fraud, fake police and unofficial guides.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Criminals posing as "tourist police"

Street beggars

Friendly people striking up a conversation

ATM and credit card theft

Fake vacation apartment scams

Unofficial guides at national parks

Roadside scams

Criminals posing as tourist police

One popular scam involves criminals posing as tourist police who rob visitors and extort money from them. They'll often stop tourist buses or tourists at the airport under the guise of checking identification and searching luggage. There is no such division of police as tourist police in South Africa, so don't let them examine your bag, and don't be afraid to ask for identification. However, if the fake police are armed, it's best to cooperate.

Another scam involves fraudulent traffic police pulling someone over for a fake traffic violation, and demanding an on-the-spot fine. It is unlawful for police to request or accept payment of fines on the roadside. Offer to go to the police station to pay the fine.

Look out for street thieves, known as strollers, who will attempt to distract and rob you while you're not paying attention. Keep valuables well concealed and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Street beggars

Similarly, it’s not uncommon for a con artist to approach tourists looking distressed, telling an elaborate story about needing a couple of bucks for gas or a bus ticket to get home. Don’t stress, use some common sense and firmly tell them ‘no, sorry’, and walk away. Never give money to beggars, here’s why.

Friendly people striking up a conversation

Be cautious of anyone randomly starting a conversation with you. While locals are generally friendly, this is a scam where overly-friendly locals come up to you and start chatting about South Africa, where you’re from, or their personal stories. While you’re having a pleasant chat, their accomplice pickpockets you. If you suspect your "new best friend" doesn’t have the best intentions, politely end the conversation and move to a more crowded area. In addition to this, avoid secluded areas, especially at night.

ATM and credit card theft

Credit card fraud is on the rise in South Africa. Never accept help from a stranger at an ATM, be discreet when entering your PIN, and avoid ATMs that look damaged or tampered with (as well as other ATMs nearby). If the ATM retains your card, contact your bank and block your card immediately. Only use ATMs in banks or shopping malls, and avoid withdrawing large sums of money, especially in busy public areas.

Fake vacation apartment scams

There have been reports of vacation accommodation scams in South Africa. Scammers either create fake accommodation listings, with fake reviews and photos, or worse, genuine listings are copy-pasted onto phony websites (that look like those of an existing, reputable company). Unsuspecting vacationers are then asked to wire deposits or even the full booking amount, and on arrival discover the accommodation doesn’t exist or that other travelers are already staying there.

Here is how to avoid this scam:

Trust your instincts. If the price is too good to be true compared to other offerings in the area, especially during peak season, there might be a reason why

Be wary of unusual payment requirements, such as personal bank transfers, Western Union and MoneyGram

Be cautious of private individuals advertising vacation rentals. Many landlords use online booking websites where would-be guests can check out the property and availability on specific dates

Once you’ve found suitable accommodation, search for online complaints and reviews. If the property is listed on other booking platforms, check for consistency in address, description and images

Use Google Maps to confirm the property’s address and to compare the photos used to advertise the property with images from Google Street View.

Unofficial guides at national parks

Beware of locals posing as official guides when visiting a national park in South Africa. They will take you to a remote part of the trail where their accomplices are waiting to rob you. This scam tends to happen mainly on Table Mountain and in the Drakensberg Mountains. Always book a guide through a licensed tour operator.

Roadside scams

Some con artists deliberately cause a road accident with the intention of robbing the victim once they stop the car. If you have been involved in a legitimate car accident, the police will be able to assist and help you out of the situation safely. If you're suspicious this might be a roadside scam (and if it is safe/your car is in a condition to do so), signal to the driver that they should follow you, and immediately drive to a police station or busy public area.

When in doubt, call the police on 10111. For an emergency that requires an ambulance, dial 10177.

Before you buy a travel insurance policy, check your government travel warnings and health advice – there may be no travel insurance cover for locations with a government travel ban or health advice against travel.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Merten Snijders	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>604554953	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>The Bo-Kaap, formerly known as the Malay Quarter.

There have been recent attacks on foreign-owned shops in and around Johannesburg, leading to sometimes deadly riots. Be extra careful if you are traveling to Johannesburg or other major cities in South Africa, as tensions may arise. Keep up to date with local news and avoid protests, demonstrations and stay away from any violence if you see it occur on the streets. Here are a few tips on what to do if you are traveling in a country experiencing civil unrest

Severe Drought in Cape Town: January 2018

Cape Town is currently experiencing a serious drought. When and if the dams drop below a certain level (“Day Zero”), taps will be shut off, and residents will have to line up to collect daily water rations. As of December 18, based on consumption and expected rainfall, Day Zero was projected to be April 29, 2018.

Water restrictions are now in place, limiting residents to 87 liters per person per day, but this might not be enough to avert a crisis.

Travelers to Cape Town should be aware of the situation, and do their part by following the rules laid out in the city's Save Like a Local campaign – these include re-using towels, limiting showers to two minutes, and seeking out accommodations that have water-saving measures in place.

Warning 4 June 2016: Possible Terror Attack

The US government has advised that it has received information that terror groups plan to attack places where US citizens gather such as shopping centers and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The US warning says the threat is "near-term" and linked it to the worldwide call by ISIS for its followers to carry out attacks during the month of Ramadan.

This year Ramadan begins on the night of June 6th and lasts 30 days until July 5th.

Before you buy a travel insurance policy, check your government travel warnings and health advice – there may be no travel insurance cover for locations with a government travel ban or health advice against travel.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Westend61	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>970176762	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, South Africa</imageCaption>

From wildlife and roadside crime to poor rural roads, here's everything you need to know.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Roads in South Africa are well maintained and easy to navigate, and for the most part travelers who hire a car to explore the country say it's a piece of cake.

Roads in rural areas present more of a challenge to drivers and can be dangerous. And given the high crime rate in South Africa, drivers are often faced with much more than just traffic hazards.

Keep these safety tips in mind while you drive South Africa's scenic roads and highways.

Hazards on South Africa's roads

Wildlife on South Africa's roads

Roadside crime risks in South Africa

Hazards on South Africa's roads

Drivers in South Africa love to overtake other cars on the road. Expect it to happen on any street, and from any lane (including the shoulder lane), so stay alert, check your rear-view mirrors, and watch out for blind spots. If you see someone trying to overtake you, just pull over (if it's safe to do so) and let them pass.

Use your judgment. Don't pull over if you're near a sharp bend, close to the edge of a cliff, or on a tight street. Just slow down, maybe put your hazards on, and wait for a safe place to stop. Never speed up for the satisfaction of the driver behind you.

Always be alert when you come to an intersection with a four-way stop, which are common in South Africa. The first car to arrive has the right of way, so pay attention and wait your turn to avoid a possible collision.

Minibuses are a popular way to get around in South Africa, however, they can be dangerous. Reports show that hundreds of accidents involving minibusses occur each year, and many include fatalities. Metered taxis or Uber are generally safer options. Be sure to use an accredited taxi service, and be aware of ongoing tensions between Uber drivers and taxi drivers, which sometimes escalate into violence.

In rural areas, street signs and road markings are often lacking, and in many cases nonexistent. It's not uncommon to find roads that aren't marked on your map, or for street numbers and addresses to be totally different from what you expected. It's particularly important to understand where you're going before you set out, that way you can avoid getting lost or ending up in a dodgy area.

Watch for pedestrians while driving. School children often have long walks to and from school, and sometimes carelessly wander onto the road.

Many farmers don't bother fencing their livestock in, so don't be surprised if you come around a bend and see a cow or goat in the middle of the street. During daylight hours this may not be an issue, but at night, especially on roads that aren't well lit, it can be extremely hazardous – so drive carefully.

Wildlife on South Africa's roads

One of the many reasons travelers head to South Africa is for the diversity of wildlife, including the "Big Five": lions, leopards, rhino, buffalo, and elephants.

If you're planning to take a drive through the many game parks and reserves, here are some important safety tips to keep at top of mind:

It is called wildlife for a reason. These animals are in no way tame, and it's important to give them the space they need. Any animal which feels threatened can become dangerous, especially if they have young ones in tow.

Avoid driving at dawn or dusk – this is when most animals are out feeding. If you want to see animals at these times safely, go with a guided tour.

Never leave your vehicle unless you have stopped at a designated area or a rest stop.

If wildlife does cross your path, stop the car, turn off your engine and sit quietly, making as little noise as possible – no radio, music, or talking – nothing. Keep your windows up and wait for the animals to pass. If they linger too long and you get worried, call the emergency number in South Africa (10111). If you have no reception or are unable to call, wait it out and try not to panic.

Do not feed any animals from your vehicle (or ever, for that matter). Not only does it disrupt their natural diet, it can place you in danger. Baboons, in particular, are attracted by food and can become aggressive.

Always follow any reserve or game park signage or rules displayed.

White Rhinoceros in Kruger Park, South Africa. Photo credit: iStock/DavidCallan

Roadside crime risks in South Africa

South Africa is a beautiful country, but there is also a lot of criminal activity going on. Though you may feel safe inside a vehicle, there are still some dangers to be aware of. Here are some things to keep in mind, plus a few safety tips to avoid becoming a victim while behind the wheel.

The most important rule is to keep your doors locked and windows rolled up at all times, even if you're in an area that you feel is safe.

It's not uncommon for thieves to wait near intersections and on highway off-ramps, approach a car when it stops and attempt to rob the driver and passengers. Keep your valuables out of sight to avoid attracting the attention from would-be thieves.

Carjacking (or car hijacking, as it's called locally) is an issue in South Africa, particularly in the Northern Cape, Western Cape, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

The roads leading into and out of Kruger Park are also common places for carjackers to strike.

Be cautious of any debris you see on the road. It may have been placed there purposely by a criminal in an attempt to get vehicles to stop. Never get out of your vehicle to clear anything from the road, just do your best to drive around it.

Never stop to pick up hitchhikers. No matter how lost or pitiful they seem, chances are their intentions are not good. It's not worth the risk. If you see someone thumbing for a ride and feel they are in trouble or need assistance, your best bet is to stop when you get to the next town and report the situation to the police.

When parking your vehicle, always keep it locked with the windows rolled up and all valuables completely out of sight.

Whenever possible, use a parking garage or store parking lot. You will likely have to pay a fee; however, these places are usually safeguarded and feature security staff to help maintain your vehicle's safety. If there are no facilities like this around, select a busy and well-lit area to park.

If your vehicle breaks down or you get a flat tire, pull over as far as possible from the road and put on your hazard lights. Remain in your vehicle at all times, with the doors locked and windows up. Most rental car companies offer road-side assistance, so call them if you can.

If you‘ve been in a collision or are hurt, call the police, but do not get out of your vehicle. Read more about why you shouldn't get out of the car here

If you see another motorist who has broken down on the side of the road, no matter how much you want to help, do not stop to offer assistance. Either have a passenger call the police or stop in the next town to alert the police or someone with a phone.

Another scam involves fraudulent traffic police. If in doubt, always offer to follow them to the police station if they demand a fine.

The larger cities and towns have their share of crimes involving drivers. While stopped at a traffic light, remain alert at all times. Keep an eye on your mirrors for anyone approaching. People may attempt to sell you something; never roll your window down to buy merchandise.

If someone approaches your car and starts washing your window at a set of lights, wave them away – stop them immediately or they will demand money and the situation can get pretty serious. There have been reports of verbal abuse and even damage to vehicles. This practice is actually illegal and if you allow it to happen, you could be considered just as guilty as the person committing the offense.

Taxi traffic jam in Johannesburg. But, there are certain things you don't want to bring back with you – no one wants a sickness souvenir from their trip.

Here are a few tips to keep you healthy on your journey.

Vaccinations recommended for South Africa

Health issues in South Africa

Water and food-borne diseases in South Africa

Vaccinations recommended for South Africa

The very nature of South Africa's outdoor adventures, particularly the more rural areas of the country, create a high risk of exposure to a variety of illnesses and diseases. If you're planning a stay in South Africa – regardless of where you are – there are several inoculations and vaccines that are recommended prior to departure.

Travelers should be covered for the following conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Diphtheria

Tetanus

Measles

Mumps

Rubella

Polio

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis A

Rabies

Typhoid

If your itinerary involves travel from a country with a high risk of yellow fever, you will also need a yellow fever certificate to enter South Africa.

Health issues in South Africa

South Africa has its share of infectious disease, though most are confined to certain areas of the country. Still, with many tourists heading there with the purpose of experiencing nature and the great outdoors, it's important to know what the risks are and how to avoid them. The country's more rural areas tend to be hotbeds for certain illnesses, especially farms and game reserves.

HIV/AIDS

Sadly, this disease is a huge problem in South Africa, with an estimated 7.7 million adults over the age of 15 suffering from the disease. This equates to an astonishing 20.4% of the adult population. When compared to the average 0.8% affected globally, it's staggering.

Obviously, visitors can reduce their risk by avoiding contact with needles, and refraining from unprotected sex with a local. What many people don't consider, however, is the unfortunate risk of violent crime, particularly rape, which heightens the chances of catching the disease. Anyone who is a victim of such a crime should seek medical assistance immediately.

Mosquito-borne diseases

Malaria and other insect-borne diseases are also prevalent in some areas of South Africa. The north and east areas, which are relatively remote, present a much greater risk than the more populated locations.

If you're planning a visit to Kruger National Park, you should plan accordingly, as there have been several incidents of infection there.

Additionally, a malaria risk zone has been designated along the border with Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Other areas such as Limpopo, Kwazulu-Natal, and parts of the Mpumalanga may also experience insect-borne illness outbreaks, depending on the time of year. The use of quality insect repellent and clothing that covers exposed skin is recommended to avoid being bitten.

Rift Valley Fever

Rift Valley Fever is contracted by contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or tissue of infected animals, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. A widespread epidemic occurred in South Africa in 2010 and 2011, with hundreds of human and thousands of animal cases reported, and more than 25 human deaths.

If you plan to travel through rural parts of South Africa, here are some tips to stay healthy and minimize mosquito bites. It sort of goes without saying, but visitors should avoid coming into contact with animal blood or tissue, and milk that hasn't been properly pasteurized shouldn't be consumed.

Rabies

Rabies can also be a problem, with a number of cases reported in various parts of the country in recent years.

In many places, there are stray dogs which may carry the disease, as well as wild animals. Part of South Africa's charm is its wildlife, but use common sense and plan accordingly. If you're going to visit places where you'll be exposed to animals or stray dogs, consider getting a rabies vaccination before you go. And whether or not you've been vaccinated, seek immediate medical treatment if you're bitten or scratched by an animal.

Water and food-borne diseases in South Africa

Food-borne and water-borne illnesses, such as typhoid, hepatitis, measles, and tuberculosis, are an ongoing risk.

Occasional outbreaks of cholera have been reported in rural areas like Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the provinces of Limpopo.

Unless a good majority of your travel itinerary involves spending time in the bathroom, avoid drinking unpasteurized milk or consuming raw meat.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in the major cities, but in rural areas water should be boiled or filtered before it's consumed. Purified water is always your safest bet. Find out about how to make your drinking water safe here.

Aside from all of the risks above, you're more likely to get a cold or gastro than contract anything else – but it pays to be prepared. Get the appropriate vaccinations, and use caution to avoid potential health issues, and you should have a safe and enjoyable trip.

From petty theft to serious crime, these are the things travelers should know.

https://www.worldnomads.com

I was hiking the Chapman’s Peak Trail when I stumbled upon a warning sign: “Cape Cobra and Puff Adder Breeding Zone.” Somehow, I’d taken a wrong turn. I scrambled atop a rock to avoid the tall grass where venomous snakes might be lurking and plotted my route back. That moment perfectly captured my 10+ years of exploring South Africa: beautiful scenery, unexpected surprises, and learning to stay safe while experiencing one of the most diverse and beautiful countries in the world.

From road-tripping along the Garden Route to surfing in Jeffreys Bay, exploring small game reserves and dancing until sunrise at AfrikaBurn, I’ve seen the Rainbow Nation from countless perspectives. And yet, like many travelers, I’ve heard stories of car hijackings, theft, and other dangers before every trip.

So is South Africa safe for tourists? The answer is yes — if you take a few precautions and stay aware of your surroundings. In this guide, I’ll share practical safety tips for Cape Town, advice for solo and female travelers, insights into safaris, and guidance on health and emergencies, all based on firsthand experience.

Why South Africa Has a Reputation for Safety Concerns

South Africa has a complex and volatile political history shaped by decades of apartheid, a system of racial segregation and discrimination that officially ended in 1994 but whose effects are still felt today in the form of economic inequality, racial tension, and segregated townships (disadvantaged urban areas originally created under apartheid laws). Official country travel guidance notes that violent crime, including armed robbery and carjacking, remains a concern across parts of the country, particularly in large cities and in townships.

In order to explore South Africa safely, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the country’s sensitive history, be aware of potential issues, and know where not to go.

Cape Town Safety Tips

Cape Town is South Africa’s most popular city for travelers, and while it offers incredible views of Table Mountain, bustling markets, beaches on the Atlantic, and world‑class attractions, visitors should still be aware that it has higher crime rates than many international destinations, particularly outside of well‑traveled areas.

However, most serious incidents occur in areas tourists don’t typically visit, and many problems can be avoided simply by following common‑sense precautions in the city’s tourist zones:

Avoid walking at night

Go hiking with a friend

Be careful of belongings in Long Street, a busy nightlife area where pickpockets are common

Don’t leave your belongings unattended at beaches

Avoid the township areas after dusk.

Stay vigilant when taking money out of an ATM.

Use a trusted taxi service to and from the airport.

Don’t accept someone’s help to carry your bags at the airport.

Transportation & Road Safety in South Africa

Given that South Africa is a sizeable country, you’ll probably want to explore at least a few of its regions, each distinct in culture and topography. While in-country flights are relatively inexpensive and frequent between major cities, many of the smaller towns and wilderness areas aren’t accessible by air. Whether you’re looking to head into wine valleys of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, journey along the winding coastline of the Garden Route, or explore the vast Kalahari Desert, a road trip is a fantastic way to explore South Africa.

I’ve rented a car each of my visits to South Africa. Roads vary in quality from new thoroughfare to potholed roads and dirt paths through nature reserves. Keep a few things to keep in mind to stay safe while on the road:

Drive on the left.

Learn the rules of the road, including hovering on the shoulder to allow faster cars to pass.

Keep valuables with you and out of sight, even when driving.

Navigate narrow, winding roads carefully.

Take extra precautions if driving at night (or avoid altogether), including not stopping in rural areas after dark. Car hijackings do happen.

While public buses and taxis off the side of the streets are generally not recommended for safety reasons, rideshare apps like Uber and Bolt are commonly available in major cities like Cape Town and Durban. Some private long-distance buses are safe to take, including the Bazbus, which is a popular way for backpackers to explore the country.

Safari Safety

With 19 national parks and over 200 reserves, wildlife is plentiful in South Africa. It’s a fantastic country for safaris, where you can spot lions, elephants, zebra, giraffe, and much more in places like Kruger and Hluhluwe–iMfolozi National Parks. There’s the option to hire a guide and driver or self-drive. Many safari camps include guided game drives with experienced guides who can help you navigate the reserve, cue you in on wildlife safety, and help you spot for your favorite animals.

If you self-drive, a 4x4 vehicle is important to navigate the bumpy terrain. It’s best to have some basic knowledge around wildlife safety, as well. It may be tempting to drive the vehicle as close as possible to capture the best photos but remember that you’re a visitor in the home of wild animals. Some animals, including elephants, are territorial, and can charge a car if it thinks the car is in its territory.

Outdoor adventure safety

South Africa is a dream destination for nature lovers. As you would anywhere, come prepared with plenty of water and sun protection for hikes. UV rays are strong due to a thin ozone layer. Poisonous snakes do exist, so stay cautious while you’re on the trails. If you’re heading into the water, know that in certain areas, currents can be strong. Be careful where you go swimming, and if you’re a new surfer, only surf beginner-friendly waters. Don’t be afraid to take a lesson either. Water sports are huge and quite affordable in South Africa; it’s a great place to brush up on skills.

Solo Travel, LGBTQ+ Travel, and Women’s Safety in South Africa

I’ve solo traveled through South Africa many times and have had no issues. South Africa isn’t conservative in the same ways that other countries in Africa can be for women—but it is important to stay vigilant and take precautions like avoid walking or driving alone at night. If you take a wrong turn into a seedy-looking area (I personally have), leave as soon as possible.

South Africa has plenty of nature and adventure-abundant destinations with social hostels that are perfect for solo travelers, including:

The Garden Route (spots like Knysna, Wilderness, Jeffry’s Bay, and Plettenberg Bay)

The Drakensberg Mountains

Cape Town and the greater Western Cape area

Lucia, KZN

South Africa is the most LGBTQ+ friendly country on the continent. Gay marriage was legalized in 2006, and Cape Town is informally considered the “gay capital” of Africa, with plenty of gay-owned businesses and nightlife spots, including an annual Pride event.

Health and Emergencies

Tap water is generally safe to drink in major cities, though quality varies in rural areas. Malaria is present in a few regions, including KwaZulu-Natal and Kruger National Park, and you’ll want to talk with your doctor regarding prevention.

If you experience an emergency while in South Africa, the big cities offer high-quality care and services. In rural areas, services may be limited though.

<imageAttribution>Alicia Erickson	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Make your trip to South Africa memorable for the right reasons – not because of a run-in with wildlife. Here's how to prepare for the weather and wilderness.

https://www.worldnomads.com

There are certain things you can prepare for, like getting your vaccinations sorted and organizing transport from the airport. But the real threat to travelers is when weather turns nasty unexpectedly, and the local wildlife creeps up on you without warning.

South Africa's weather and natural hazards

A guide to wildlife in South Africa

Road hazards

Water dangers

South Africa's weather and natural hazards

The climate in South Africa is generally dry, warm, and sometimes humid. It can also be unpredictable. The biggest weather-related threat typically involves rain, and all of the effects it can have.

The rainy season for the majority of the country occurs during the summer months (November-March) and can bring extremely heavy rain. The heavier the rain, the greater the likelihood of flash flooding.

Flooding

Flooding has been a serious issue in recent years, with the government declaring of state of disaster in several provinces. Floods are nothing to take lightly – they can cause significant damage to property and even loss of life. In April, 2019, floods and mudslides killed at least 60 people in Durban and the wider KwaZulu-Natal province.

Lightning over Durban. Photo credit: iStock

South Africa is home to many rivers, lakes and winding creeks. During periods of heavy rainfall, these smaller creeks may overflow and flood nearby roads. This can make driving extremely treacherous.

Pay attention to the weather if you are out on an excursion. You don't want to end up stranded somewhere in your vehicle. If possible, consult with a local before you leave for a road trip for advice on what areas might be more risky and should be avoided.

Surrounding coastal waters can also be affected by heavy rainfall, causing unpredictable waves, and tide patterns which can be extremely dangerous for anyone swimming or surfing. Even beaches and areas near the coast can be hazardous. If you're visiting during the rainy season, take heed.

Lightning

Another danger that often accompanies rainstorms is lightning. Dozens of people have lost their lives in lightning-related incidents in recent years. In fact, South Africa happens to have one of the highest lightning ground strike densities in the world. To avoid danger during an electrical storm:

Seek shelter immediately (preferably in a large building or a fully enclosed vehicle).

Unplug electrical equipment.

Stay away from windows.

Listen to The World Nomads Podcast: South Africa

A guide to wildlife in South Africa

South Africa is home to some of the most incredible species of wild animals on earth. Moreover, it offers a unique opportunity for visitors to actually observe and experience these fascinating creatures in their natural environment. It's the very reason many people choose to go here.

One of the most important things to consider before setting out to see the animals is that while they're beautiful and may seem peaceful and harmless, they are most certainly wild animals and can pose a serious threat to anyone who comes near them.

Here are a few animals you may encounter, and tips to keep your interactions with them safe.

Monkeys and baboons

These guys are just about everywhere and have become somewhat of a nuisance. They're limber and sneaky and can climb over gates and fences with ease, so even areas that are 'protected' from the wildlife may still have some uninvited guests popping in.

Whatever you do, don't feed them. They can become extremely aggressive and they're quite strong. Take a few pictures and then avoid them as much as possible.

This little one might be cute now, but it will become a food snatching ninja in time. Photo credit: iStock

Lions and leopards

You'll likely see these magnificent creatures lounging around the bush while you're out on safari. While they generally pay no mind to passing sightseers, they're still dangerous. As peaceful as they may appear, they can be aggressive and unpredictable. Never get out of your vehicle near these big cats.

Elephants

Seeing elephants close is an unreal experience, and they typically aren't bothered by tourists snapping pictures. However, they are huge and fast and can be aggressive.

Females are fiercely protective of their young and will attack if they feel their safety is being threatened, so don't get too close.

Likewise, lone bull elephants can be territorial and hostile. Be watchful of warning signs, such as waving or flapping of the ears, which can mean an elephant is preparing to charge.

Keep your distance, and keep your vehicle running (some suggest keeping it in reverse), so you can make a hasty retreat if needed.

View elephants from afar, no need to try and get closer. Photo credit: iStock

Rhinos

Rhinos are particularly territorial animals, with strong senses of smell and hearing, but poor eyesight. The rule of thumb is to give them space and stay far enough away that they can't smell you, and you'll be safe.

Hippos

While they appear to be gentle and harmless, hippos are extremely aggressive animals. In fact, hippos are responsible for more deaths each year in Africa than any other animal.

Steer clear of them, and never get between them and the water. Keep a close eye out when near rivers or lakes, as hippos blend in well and are hard to spot.

Keep your eyes peeled for these surprisingly dangerous creatures. Photo credit: iStock

Road hazards

While driving in areas where wildlife is prevalent, be extremely vigilant of anything that might dart across the road in front of your vehicle. Deer, impala, and even water buffalo may cross without warning, and a collision with one of these could cause you and your passengers serious harm or even death.

Water dangers

Crocodiles are known to inhabit some bodies of water in South Africa, so never go swimming without consulting with the locals first.

Shark attacks have been reported in Western Cape Province in the False Bay area, and off KwaZulu-Natal in the southeast, but they remain rare events.

Shark spotters in Cape Town. Photo credit: iStock

It's pretty safe to swim at most major beaches in Cape Town, because they have implemented an effective Shark Spotters program. Shark Spotters operate on four local beaches year-round. Four others have spotters during the spring and summer months only. Pay close attention to the flags and signage posted on the beaches, just to be safe.

Shark Spotters have also put up a non-lethal exclusion net barrier at Fish Hoek to keep sharks out of the swimming area. Some beach locations in KwaZulu Natal also use a barrier-style net or drumlines, though these are controversial as they can pose a danger to the sharks and other marine animals.

It's important to note that the Fish Hoek net is only deployed during the spring and summer months (weekends in October and April, daily November-March). In KwaZulu-Natal, the nets are removed during the months of May–July to make way for migrating sardines.

A journey to South Africa almost certainly means that you will experience adventure and excitement. But when visiting a country as vast and untamed as this, it's important that you take into consideration nature's risks along with its beauty. If you plan accordingly and respect the land, weather, and wildlife around you, the memories you leave with will be good ones.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/DavidCallan	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>157772134	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Ostrich in Kruger Park, South Africa</imageCaption>
