In Lithuania there are plenty of options, however there are also certain things to note with regards to getting around safely.</p> <h2>Driving</h2> <p>One of the more popular means of transportation in Lithuania is renting a vehicle.</p> <p>This should be done with extreme caution, however, given the high rate of accidents and resulting deaths that occur there each year. Simply put, the driving there is dangerous. Lithuanian drivers are known to be extremely aggressive, speedy and careless. You must drive defensively and remember that it's best to yield to anyone who appears to be driving fast or erratically, to be on the safe side.</p> <p>Night driving can be particularly treacherous and extra care should be exercised. When driving in more rural areas, watch for wildlife. There is also the issue of poorly kept roads and severe potholes. Additionally, keep in mind that drivers must use dipped headlights at all times.</p> <p>Driving during the winter can be extremely hazardous due to the harsh cold and severe weather. In fact, between November 10th and April 1st, winter tires are required by law on all vehicles. Be sure the vehicle you are using is well equipped to handle the elements. Every year hundreds of people lose their lives on Lithuanian roads from traffic accidents caused by either negligence of other drivers or weather related incidents. Either way, be aware of the dangers and use caution.</p> <p>You should also take note that Lithuania is full of radar speed traps. You'd best adhere to the posted speed limits, otherwise you'll likely end up paying a hefty on the spot fine to a police officer. The authorities are also always on the lookout for drunk drivers, and violators face fines and possible imprisonment. In case you do happen to get pulled over, make sure you have your international driving license or your passport as well as the original vehicle registration documents (copies aren't accepted).</p> <h2>Public transport in Lithuania</h2> <p>Given the risk involved with driving in Lithuania, you may choose instead to use available public transportation to get around. As is typically the case, crowded buses and trolleys are often havens for petty thieves so if you go this route, keep a close eye on your belongings.</p> <p>Taxis are quite accessible throughout Lithuania, particularly the larger city areas.</p> <p>It's a safer bet to call ahead for one, rather than hailing one on the street (particularly at night). Your hotel concierge should be able to assist you with this.</p> <p>If you do flag your own ride down, make sure there is a visible working meter before you get in to avoid being ripped off. Unmarked taxis are illegal and often cost way more than legitimate ones, so stick with those that are registered.</p> <p>Trolleys and buses are cheap, easy ways to get from here to there. Keep in mind, however, that tickets should be purchased from reputable sources rather than from anyone on the streets. Additionally, your ticket must be stamped by the onboard machine otherwise you'll find yourself in trouble with undercover inspectors and possibly charged a fine.</p> <h2>Walking around Lithuania</h2> <p>Lithuania is a beautiful country that can be explored on foot in many areas. As a pedestrian, however, you should be very aware of the dangerous drivers on the road.</p> <p>They often speed and drive recklessly, paying little regard to people attempting to cross the road or even walking on sidewalks. Even pedestrian crossings, which are meant to provide a safe place to cross busy streets on foot, are widely ignored by hazardous drivers. Remain alert at all times.</p> <p>The terrain in some areas, such as Vilnius, can be challenging to negotiate. Footpaths are often uneven or poorly kept making them dangerous for anyone not surefooted. If you plan on spending time in forested areas, you may want to consider being inoculated for rabies and tick-borne encephalitis, both of which are common in the more rural areas and during the summer months.</p> <p>Recent years have shown an increase in reports of Trichinellosis outbreaks in Panevezys. To the layperson, this is the medical term for roundworm. The outbreaks are believed to have been caused by consuming undercooked pork, namely wild boar which is popular in some areas of Lithuania. To avoid contracting this nasty food-borne illness, always make sure all food is properly cooked. It's also more prevalent in wild animals, so sticking with meat that's derived from animals raised specifically for eating is your best bet.</p> <p>HIV/AIDS is not a huge problem in Lithuania, with only about .1% of the adult population living with the disease. Nevertheless, it's a potential threat and the proper precautions should be taken to avoid exposure and possible contraction of the illness. If you plan on romancing a local while you're there, by all means enjoy. Just be sure to use latex condoms.</p> <h2>Getting along with the locals</h2> <p>The Lithuanian people are a friendly, albeit unique, bunch. The country has a long, emotional history and that has had a profound effect on a good many of those who live there. The suicide rate in Lithuania ranks among the highest in the world, so it's no surprise that you may see a lot of sad, forlorn looks on the faces of people you pass by. Avoid talking about wealth and happiness, as it is considered rude and the locals may take offense.</p> <p>A big smile to greet people may be customary and welcomed in your culture, but this is not the case in Lithuania. To the contrary, an unsolicited smile on the street can make a local suspicious and feel like they are being made fun of. Smiles are reserved for friends, so unless you know the person keep your grin to yourself.</p> <p>Female travelers, particularly those with a more progressive attitude, may find it surprising that Lithuanian men are extremely chivalrous. Opening doors, offering a hand to climb out of a vehicle and paying the bill at a restaurant or bar are all customarily male duties in Lithuania. Try not to take offense or consider it condescending. Just go with it. Theft from vehicles is also a growing problem. If you have rented a vehicle and are driving, be cautious of people on the side of the road attempting to flag you down and get you to pull over. This is often a ploy to get you out of your car; meanwhile a second party either steals property out of your unattended vehicle or drives off with it. If you absolutely must exit your vehicle, for instance if you are involved in an accident, be sure to turn off the ignition, take the keys and lock the car.</p> <p>Car theft is gaining popularity among thieves, so always lock unattended vehicles and make sure any valuables left in the car are hidden. Whenever possible, try to park in well-lit, guarded parking lots, especially if you'll be leaving the vehicle overnight.</p> <p>There has also been a recent increase in bicycle thefts. These incidents are mostly isolated to the Vilnius area, but regardless of location anyone using a bike should securely lock it when leaving it unattended, just in case.</p> <p>When traveling near border areas be certain that you have your passport and that it has been stamped. Officials will check it and then often demand "compensation" (read: a bribe) if you don't have the proper stamps. It's also worth noting that the general attitude toward homosexuality in Lithuania is a negative one. Open displays of affection between people of the same gender are often met with violent reactions. Even suspicion of same sex relationships, such as two heterosexual men sitting too close at a bar, can result in a confrontation so be mindful.</p> <h2>Drink responsibly</h2> <p>Lithuania has a large selection of premium beer, which is quite tasty but also happens to be quite strong. Vodka is also a popular drink of choice. If you plan on partaking, do so with caution. There have been a lot of recent reports of tourists becoming victims of crime after getting extremely intoxicated. Avoid drinking alone or with people you don't know. If visiting Vilnius is on your itinerary, be aware that it happens to be one of the most popular locations for stag weekends. Be on the lookout for groups of highly intoxicated men and stay out of their way.</p> <p>Drink spiking is also an issue, with victims being given a drink laced with drugs that render them unconscious. Any number of bad things can happen to you after you've consumed a spiked drink so be extremely careful not to accept drinks from strangers, always watch the bartender preparing your drink and keep it with you (and in your sight) at all times.</p> <h2>Don't get ripped off</h2> <p>As with many travel destinations, in Lithuania foreigners are often targeted by dishonest locals hoping to overcharge them and make a little extra money. This often happens in bars where the price of drinks is grossly inflated when purchased by unsuspecting tourists. There is also the slight possibility that if you are paying with a credit or debit card, a shifty bartender will attempt to charge fraudulent transactions against your account. To avoid becoming a victim, always verify the price of drinks before ordering, only order (and pay for) one round at a time and double check your bill and credit card receipt.</p> <h2>Places to avoid in Lithuania</h2> <p>Lithuania is a relatively safe place to visit, with a low crime rate. There are, however, certain locations and areas where the risk is slightly greater, particularly after dark. Whenever possible, ask someone local that you trust, such as your hotel concierge, which bars and nightclubs are safest and which ones to avoid. In Vilnius, the authorities actually publish a list containing the names of clubs and night spots that have seen the highest rate of crime. The list is updated every six months so the information is pretty accurate. When walking around at night, avoid seedy neighborhoods, try to stick to the main roads and well lit areas and travel in groups rather than alone.</p> <p>Lithuania is a lovely place to visit and offers much more to tourists than meets the eye.
