How will the World Cup fan experience vary in each country? Our guide breaks it down.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Soccer (better known as football) is the world’s most popular sport, with around 5 billion fans worldwide according to FIFA. That’s 2.5 billion more than cricket, the second most popular sport. Soccer fans are known for their loyalty, passion, creative (and sometimes profane) chants, and rituals such as “tifos”. These are massive banners or mosaic-like displays made of squares of cardboard that fans hold up to form words or images – the designs are planned well in advance and can fill an entire stadium.

In June 2026, fans from around the world will bring this unique energy to the FIFA World Cup 2026. This tournament will be the largest of its kind ever held, and the first to be hosted by three nations: Canada, the US, and Mexico. 42 nations will compete in 104 matches.

If you’re planning to attend the World Cup but haven’t experienced major soccer matches before, what can you expect at the tournament? Read on to learn how soccer culture differs between nations, and what it will be like to watch the beautiful game played on such a grand scale.

Differences in soccer culture between nations

Mexico

Mexican fútbol culture is legendary. Mexico is one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world, right up there with England, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, and soccer is by far the most popular sport. Matches are noisy and boisterous affairs, and fans may end up showered with beer and popcorn.

Joe Furey, a former drug war correspondent frequently based in Mexico, told World Nomads, “Compared to the US and Canada, when I’ve watched football in Mexico the atmosphere has been rowdier, more physical, and more continuous – chanting that doesn’t stop, drums, flags, whole sections on their feet. But it's just ritual, not a menace. And the Mexican authorities know how to police it, at least in built-up areas with larger stadiums.”

Mexican soccer games are also family-friendly, with multiple generations in attendance – more so than Argentina or Brazil.

United States

Though many people in the US grow up playing soccer, and community soccer leagues can be seen on fields across the country, professional soccer has been relatively slow to catch on. Major League Soccer (MLS) still lags behind the national football, baseball, basketball, and hockey leagues in popularity. But the gap is closing.

Interest in soccer is at an all-time high, fueled by interest in international leagues such as the UK’s Premier League, the recent successes of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, and the arrival of international superstars such as Lionel Messi and David Beckham on MLS teams. More than 11 million fans attended MLS matches in 2025.

And while the fervor of the fan base may not rival Mexico, there’s still plenty of passion. Avid fans of MLS teams have formed supporter groups who buy up blocks of seats at games, where they chant and create tifos.

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams have their own supporter group, the American Outlaws. They will be in full force at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Mexican National Team also has a massive and enthusiastic fan base in the US, with some 65 million supporters.

Canada

MLS, like the NHL, MLB, and NBA, has teams in both the US and Canada. While soccer is the most widely played sport in Canada, MLS ranks behind professional hockey, basketball, baseball, and both American and Canadian football as a spectator sport. But, as in the US, Canadian interest in soccer is growing – and the Canadian national team has become one of the best teams in North and Central America. Membership in the Voyageurs, Team Canada’s supporter group, is surging ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Soccer culture at the FIFA World Cup

The atmosphere at World Cup stadiums might have more to do with the teams playing than with the host city or country. Each team’s set of fans will bring their own personality and traditions to the matches – for example, host cities are preparing for some 10,000 members of the Orange Army (fans of the Dutch team) to flood the streets as they march en masse towards the stadium.

All stadiums have seating sections for supporters – the national teams often set aside tickets for supporter groups such as the Voyageurs. These sections will feature chanting, face paint, silly hats, flags, tifas, and high levels of enthusiasm.

In other sections of the stadium, many fans might not have a strong preference for either team but are there for the experience. If fans bought tickets before the draw that determines who plays who in the opening matches, they wouldn’t have known which teams they’d end up watching. (I fall into this category – I’m American and my husband is Dutch, but the match we’ll be watching is Team Paraguay vs. Australia’s Socceroos.) In any case, the atmosphere will be electric.

The level of passion may be just as high at the Fan Festivals and Fan Zones. These events, put on by the host cities, are typically free and open to the public. The 2026 Fan Festivals will take place in iconic locations such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Mexico City’s enormous Zócalo Plaza and may draw crowds up to 100,000. Reservations will likely be required, and security will be tight. Fan Zones are smaller events in neighborhoods around the host cities. Crowds will likely be smaller, and security less strict.

These events will feature live broadcasts of all the matches (not just those in the host city) and draw thousands of locals, domestic tourists, and international travelers who want to cheer on their national team with other like-minded fans.

Fan Zones won’t just be happening in host cities – they’ll also be held in cities across the host nations and around the world.

Team rivalries

The energy at any given match or fan festival will also depend heavily on the teams facing each other and how close the tournament is to the final. Certain soccer rivalries are especially contentious, including Brazil vs. Argentina, Serbia vs. Croatia, Germany vs. Netherlands – and USA vs. Mexico.

The USA vs. Mexico rivalry dates to 1934, but heated up in the 90s when professional soccer finally took off in the USA and matches actually became competitive. A couple of pivotal 2-0 victories by the USA stoked the fire over the following decades, leading US fans to taunt the Mexican team with chants of “Dos a Cero.”

The rivalry between the USA and Canada, while not as intense, dates back all the way to 1885, when the USA played its first-ever international match against Canada. The two countries currently have the biggest international hockey rivalry, having faced off in multiple Olympic finals and semifinals – most recently in the 2026 Olympics in Milan – and the current political climate between the two nations may also increase the animosity between soccer fans.

To prevent hooliganism at the World Cup, fans with a history of violence will be banned from traveling to the tournament. For the majority of fans, team rivalries are good-natured, and the World Cup is an opportunity to meet and mingle with other fans from around the world.

It’s going to be a World Cup for the ages.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / Lighthouse Films	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Mexico has a vibrant and passionate football culture, but also something of a reputation for danger. Here’s what to know before traveling to the World Cup in Mexico.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Known for its vibrant football culture and passionate fans, Mexico will be the first country to host three World Cup tournaments (1970, 1986, and 2026). FIFA officials expect this year’s tournament to draw some 5.5 million visitors throughout Mexico.

An event of this size, held in a country that has recently experienced a wave of cartel violence, has many travelers wondering if the World Cup will be safe for visitors. Here’s what to know before you go, and safety tips to help keep your visit trouble-free.

Crime concerns during the FIFA World Cup 2026

Health care access for visitors to Mexico

World Cup safety in host cities

Mexico City safety

Guadalajara safety

Monterrey safety

Transportation and taxi safety

Protests and large gatherings

Practical safety tips for visiting Mexico during the World Cup

Crime concerns during the FIFA World Cup 2026

Despite Mexico’s reputation for crime, visitors should keep in mind that it is a very large and diverse country. The US State Department has issued a travel advisory of Level 2: Use increased caution for Mexico, the same level as Spain and Sweden. However, some areas are best avoided due to the risk of kidnapping and drug cartel violence.

Cartel violence in Mexico

Drug cartels and organized crime are an unfortunate reality in Mexico, particularly in certain states and border areas.

In late February 2026, cartel violence in Mexico made international headlines when Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, known as El Mencho, was killed in the state of Jalisco. In retaliation, cartel members set fire to vehicles and businesses and created roadblocks in at least 13 states. Tourists in some regions, including the popular seaside resort town of Puerto Vallarta, were told to shelter in place, and numerous airlines cancelled flights.

The chaos has since died down. Former drug war correspondent Joe Furey told World Nomads, “I doubt there's much more danger of cartel retaliation. What we saw was proof of loyalty, nothing more – necessary bluster.”

“Cartels are, at root, financial organizations,” he pointed out. “Their money is not confined to drugs, extortion, and other overtly illegal rackets. It’s also washed and reinvested through legitimate businesses and professional laundering networks.”

In that way, the World Cup is an economic opportunity for cartels. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, author of a new book on Mexican cartels, says she thinks the cartels are likely to keep a low profile during the event, so as not to drive away tourists.

Tourist zones

Most of the cartel-related violence is related to turf wars between rival gangs, and typically happens away from tourist areas, as local authorities go to great lengths to keep those areas safe. Though there have been isolated cases where tourists were caught in the crossfire, sticking to resort areas and tourist zones is still one of the best ways to stay out of trouble.

Government travel advisories

Due in part to cartel violence, the US State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel travel advisory for the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. While none of the FIFA World Cup venues are in these states, Guadalajara’s World Cup venue is in Jalisco, which is currently at a Level 3: Reconsider Travel level.

Health care access for visitors to Mexico

Mexico has both public and private health care systems, but the public system is generally intended for residents enrolled in national programs. If you’re visiting Mexico and need medical care, you’ll usually be treated at a private clinic or hospital and may be expected to pay for services upfront. Your personal health insurance may not cover expenses if you get sick or injured while traveling abroad.

To help avoid paying out of pocket for potentially expensive medical bills, it may be wise to consider travel insurance with emergency medical coverage.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

World Cup safety in host cities

Mexico is hosting 13 World Cup matches across three cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. But is Mexico safe for soccer fans?

Following the cartel violence, FIFA representatives met with Mexican authorities to discuss security at the World Cup and review the intelligence, prevention, and operational protocols that were planned.

On March 6, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to deploy as many as 100,000 security personnel in host cities and tourist areas during the tournament – 20,000 military personnel, 55,000 police officers, and members of private security companies.

The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, expressed his “complete confidence in Mexico, in its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and in the authorities."

Mexico City safety

Mexico’s capital city is a vibrant, sprawling, sophisticated metropolis, offering rich history and modern culture. The city will host five matches at the venerable Estadio Azteca (renamed Estadio de Ciudad de México for the World Cup), including the opening match of the tournament on June 11. In anticipation of huge crowds, Mexico City has a host of infrastructure and security projects in the works, including:

Large-scale security improvements at Mexico City International Airport

Deployment of counter-drones to protect stadiums and fan zones

A new train line connecting Mexico City with Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía (around 30 miles away)

Complete renovation of Metro Line 1

Renovated tourist routes and new streetlights in the city center

Creation of 208 mi (334km) of “safe paths” featuring LED lighting, video surveillance cameras, and emergency buttons that connect pedestrians with authorities

17 additional trains on the light rail route leading to the stadium

The stadium is also being completely renovated and brought up to FIFA security and safety standards. Updates include:

100 new security cameras

Improved elevators, circulation routes, and accessibility

Updated entrances, stairs, and corridors to improve traffic flow and eliminate bottlenecks

Redesigned road and pedestrian accesses to the station

Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at the FIFA Fan Festival in the Zócalo, Mexico City’s massive central square. Crowds of up to 100,000 are expected on days when Mexico’s team is playing.

LGBTQ+ fans will find a welcoming, safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub at Pride House Mexico City 2026. Events will also take place in Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Guadalajara safety

Birthplace of mariachi music, birria, and the sombrero, Guadalajara is a big, fun-loving city that’s stayed true to its roots.

The city is undergoing a variety of safety and infrastructure improvements ahead of the World Cup, including:

Expansion of the Chapala highway connecting Guadalajara to the international airport

A new Line 5 of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system connecting the airport with the stadium and downtown

Upgrades to the historic downtown, such as new streetlights and improved pedestrian crossings

Plans to deploy drones and AI-driven video surveillance to provide security

Estadio Akron in Zapopan (part of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area) will host four matches and will be renamed Estadio Guadalajara for the tournament. The stadium is being renovated with:

New signage offering greater visibility of emergency exits and security points

A Sensory Room designed for neurodivergent guests

Improved communications infrastructure and more security cameras

The Fan Festival will be held at Plaza Liberación in the city’s historic center.

Monterrey safety

Located in the state of Nuevo León, Monterrey is the industrial capital of Mexico, featuring tall skyscrapers against the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains.

The city will host four FIFA World Cup matches. Infrastructure and security updates ahead of the event include:

An extensive airport renovation to improve passenger flow and reduce wait times

4,000 new buses and 500 new bus stops

Construction of new Metro lines and renovation of Line 1 (the most direct line to the stadium)

New headquarters built and seven new divisions added to the Civil Force (state police force)

Estadio BBVA (renamed Estadio Monterrey for the tournament) was built in 2015 and is well-designed for accessibility. But there are still improvements in the works for the World Cup, such as:

Cashless payment for stadium purchases

Robotic dogs deployed around the perimeter to detect hazardous materials

AI-assisted surveillance that can analyze crowd behavior in real time

Around 7,000 dedicated officers placed around stadiums and transit corridors

Monterrey’s Fan Festival will be held in Parque Fundidora, a large urban park with a capacity of around 40,000 fans.

Transportation and taxi safety

All three host cities have extensive public transit systems that have been expanded or upgraded in advance of the World Cup. The metro or light rail will likely be the easiest and most efficient way to get to the venues.

Safety tips for public transit

Pickpockets are common on public transit, especially on crowded cars and at peak travel times, so keep your belongings secure

Stay vigilant in busy stations and major transfer points

Beware of distraction tactics where one person spills something on you or causes a commotion while their accomplice steals your belongings

Taxi safety in Mexico

Express kidnappings – where a taxi driver picks up the victim, takes them to an ATM, and forces them to take out cash – have been known to occur in Mexico. To avoid trouble:

Never hail a taxi – even one that looks properly licensed – off the street

At transport hubs, pick up taxis from authorized taxi kiosks

Have your accommodation or restaurant order you a licensed taxi, or use ride-sharing apps

Protests and large gatherings

Avoid protests, as they can become violent. It’s also illegal for foreigners in Mexico to take part in political activity.

If attending a large gathering such as a Fan Festival:

Keep your belongings secure, as pickpockets often target crowded areas

Know where the exits are and prepare a strategy in case the crowd gets out of hand

Keep an eye on your companions and have a planned meeting place and time if you get separated

Practical safety tips for visiting Mexico during the World Cup

Along with the tips above, these general travel tips can help you avoid trouble during the tournament or whenever you visit Mexico.

Enlist in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (US citizens) or similar programs to get alerts from your embassy and help them contact you in an emergency

Stick to patrolled tourist zones and resort areas

Travel in groups – there is safety in numbers

Leave valuables at your hotel and carry only the money you need for the day

Stay alert and aware of your surroundings

Don’t sling bags over the back of your chair, leave your wallet or phone out on a table, or walk around with your phone in your hand, as snatch-and-grabs do occur

Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen and sun-protective clothing

Always drink in moderation and never leave your drink unattended

Avoid isolated spots, particularly at night

Don’t travel at night outside major cities

Headed to Canada for the World Cup tournament? Vancouver and Toronto have spent months preparing for you and hundreds of thousands of other visitors – but any event of this size can pose hazards. Here’s what to know about crime, crowds, and extreme weather before you go.

Canada’s overall safety reputation

Known for its polite, friendly residents and cosmopolitan cities, Canada is considered an overall safe destination for travelers. The 2025 Global Peace Index has Canada tied for 14th of 163 countries. And the US State Department has issued its lowest-level travel advisory, Level 1: Exercise normal precautions, for Canada.

Nonetheless, crime does occur here. While a 2025 report from Statistics Canada indicates that crime is down in Canada, 62% of Canadians feel crime is a growing concern in their communities. Canada’s terrorism threat level has been listed as Medium since 2014, indicating authorities remain vigilant and prepared to respond to potential threats. And while gun control laws are strict, nine people were killed in a mass shooting in a remote part of British Columbia in February 2026.

Crime during the World Cup

Will Canada be safe for soccer fans? Travelers should be aware that FIFA has strict stadium guidelines that all venues must adhere to, and safety, infrastructure, and crowd management requirements that host cities must prioritize.

But it’s still important to prepare and stay vigilant. Check out our World Cup safety tips to help ensure a trouble-free visit.

Host cities and urban safety

Toronto, Ontario

Canada’s largest city, Toronto gets its name from the Native term for “meeting place.” It’s one of the world’s most ethnically diverse cities, known for vibrant culture and great food.

The World Cup 2026 is expected to bring more than a million people to Toronto. To host the tournament, the City of Toronto is spending an estimated CAD $380 million. Around $150 million will be spent on safety, security, and long-lasting upgrades to ensure the city meets all FIFA requirements. Plans include:

Temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras around World Cup events

Cooling infrastructure, such as misting stations and water trucks

Increased transit services, with priority lanes for buses and streetcars on Bathurst and Dufferin streets

A new, larger streetcar stop east of the gates to Exhibition Place near Fleet Street

BMO Field

Located at Exhibition Place west of the city center, BMO Field (renamed Toronto Stadium for the tournament) will host six World Cup matches.

Of the 16 total World Cup venues, BMO Field is undergoing one of the largest renovations. “Fans can expect a much different landscape around the stadiums than normal, with an expanded secure zone,” said Peter Montopoli, Chief Tournament Officer, Canada, for FIFA World Cup 2026.

Improvements and updates include:

Adding 17,000 temporary seats to bring capacity up to the FIFA-required minimum of 45,000

New approaches to entrances and exits

Three new elevators to improve accessibility

The temporary stands have drawn criticism online, with some residents questioning their safety. But Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which operates BMO Field, says they were designed to meet FIFA’s stringent safety requirements. The City of Toronto assured the stands meet building codes and will be tested before use.

Officials warn there will be very limited parking at the stadium. Fans are encouraged to use other transportation methods.

Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Toronto

Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at Toronto’s Fan Festival, being held at the Bentway, a new public space under the Gardiner Expressway.

Pride House Toronto 2026 offers a safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub for LGBTQI+ communities.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Flanked by snow-capped mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is a scenic and cosmopolitan city with a walkable downtown.

Tragic events are not unheard of here – the city made news in April 2024, when an SUV drove through a crowd at a Lapu Lapu Day festival, killing 11 people. But Vancouver also has wide experience with hosting major sporting events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and nine matches during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

Security operations and infrastructure upgrades for the 2026 tournament include:

200 temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras in areas associated with the tournament (required under Vancouver’s contract with FIFA)

Major transit increases along Metro Vancouver’s TransLink network, such as:

Extra bus service to routes serving the FIFA Fan Festival at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE)

A dedicated shuttle between the PNE and main SkyTrain lines

More frequent and extended service on the SkyTrain before and after matches

According to Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, security planning for the tournament will be led by the Vancouver Police Department in partnership with other Canadian law enforcement agencies. In February 2026, in response to concerns, he stated that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would not be involved in security operations.

BC Place

Vancouver will host seven FIFA World Cup matches at BC Place Vancouver, its iconic downtown stadium. BC Place is conveniently located a short walk from the SkyTrain. Though the stadium was upgraded for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, additional improvements are in the works for the 2026 tournament, including redesigned entrances, more elevators, and gender-neutral washrooms.

As part of their host city agreement with FIFA, the city will create a controlled area of about 1.25mi (2km) around the stadium. Extra precautions will be taken in the zone to ensure public safety.

Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Vancouver

Vancouver’s Fan Festival will be held at Hastings Park within the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) grounds.

Pride House Vancouver 2026 will offer game screenings, cultural events, and more.

Public transit safety during major events

Both Canadian host cities have extensive and reliable public transit. When I visited Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, my SkyTrain ride featured a jovial crowd of Canadians singing O Canada. I felt very safe, but it’s important not to let your guard down.

Toronto and Vancouver police have warned of a rise in pickpocket thefts at festivals, shopping malls, public transit, and other crowded places.

To avoid becoming a victim:

Carry your phone or wallet in an inside pocket or a zipped crossbody bag kept in front of your body – not in a back pocket where it can be easily stolen without you noticing.

Stay extra vigilant in crowded places, packed trains, and busy stations or transfer points.

Be wary of strangers in your personal space. Thieves have been known to use distraction techniques and sleight of hand to rid victims of their valuables.

Use your mobile phone only when necessary – otherwise, keep it secure and out of sight.

Weather considerations

Extreme heat is becoming more common in Canada. In summer 2025, Toronto had double the average number of days over 90°F (32 °C), while temperatures rose above 104°F (40 °C) in British Columbia, breaking Canada’s record for September.

Extreme rainfall events are also more frequent, along with severe storms and tornadoes in Ontario.

If there’s a heat wave while you’re visiting Canada, follow these tips:

Stay hydrated and seek out misting stations or shade

Stay inside during the hottest parts of the day

Wear a sun hat, sun-protective clothing, and sunscreen

To stay informed in the event of a heat wave, tornado warning, or wildfire:

Download the WeatherCAN mobile app to get weather alerts and forecasts

Visit Environment Canada for up-to-date information on affected areas

Health care access for visitors to Canada

Canada has a publicly funded, universal health care system – but it’s for citizens and permanent residents only. If you’re a visitor, Canada will not pay for your hospital or medical services. And your personal health insurance may not cover expenses if you get sick or injured when you’re away from home.

To avoid paying out of pocket for expensive medical bills, it may be wise to consider travel insurance with emergency medical coverage.

Travel resources for the 2026 World Cup in Canada

The Government of Canada has compiled these helpful resources for fans planning to visit for the World Cup.

For city-specific tips and advice, visit the official World Cup sites for Vancouver and Toronto.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything, and coverage may differ depending on the country of residence, state or province. Carefully read the policy wording for a full description of coverage, including the terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / Photo and Co	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

With 78 matches across eleven host cities, the US portion of the 2026 World Cup promises soccer fans excitement on a massive scale.
Currently, both the Canadian and Australian governments have the US under a green “Exercise normal safety precautions” advisory. Violent and petty crime do occur, especially in urban areas, but the rate of violent crime is decreasing, and projections show that 2025 had the lowest homicide rate in more than 100 years.

Crime in US cities

The US is a vast and highly diverse country, and some places are safer than others. San Jose, CA, Los Angeles, CA, and Arlington, TX made SmartAsset’s list of the top 10 safest cities – all are host cities or host-city adjacent. On the other hand, host cities Kansas City, MO and Philadelphia, PA were ranked #45 and #46 out of 50.

It should also be noted that crime varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. Often, the most dangerous areas are places most tourists will never go.

The threat of gun violence

Gun laws in the US are less strict than in countries such as the UK or Australia, but regulations vary by state. The US has a significantly higher rate of gun deaths than most developed nations, but while mass shootings often make international headlines, these incidents make up only 1% of gun violence.

All World Cup stadium venues will have a fenced, outer perimeter with metal detectors and security screenings at the entry points. Weapons of any kind are prohibited within the perimeter, and there is a clear-bag policy for guests. Fan Festivals are expected to follow these same protocols.

Reliability of emergency services

The quality of emergency health services in the US is good, but can vary from state to state. Wait times in emergency rooms can be long, and the cost of care is high.

Visa issues

New regulations and executive orders from the Trump Administration have complicated matters for many international visitors.

Residents of the 42 Visa Waiver countries can apply for a visa online using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Fans from other countries will require a B1/B2 visitor visa.

The State Department has set up a FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (PASS) to expedite visa interviews for fans who bought their tickets directly from FIFA. However, having a ticket does not guarantee a visa will be issued. And in December 2025, Trump issued a proclamation suspending or limiting visas for foreign nationals from 39 countries. Several of these nations have teams participating in the World Cup. While the teams and staff will be allowed in, fans will not.

If you are planning to travel from abroad to attend the tournament and require a visa, apply for your FIFA PASS appointment right away.

Safety in major host cities

Compared to World Cup events in Mexico, sports journalist Joe Furey expects US events to skew “more corporate, tourist, and family.” Still, the participating teams and their fans will bring their own unique and unpredictable energy to every match and the events around it. And even though each US host city has experience with large sporting events, most have not hosted an event of this size and scale.

FIFA has strict safety and security guidelines that all host cities must follow. But the final responsibility for safety and security at the World Cup falls on the federal government and the host cities themselves. FIFA also requires host cities to provide adequate public transportation, health, and emergency services.

The US federal government has allocated vast amounts of funding and other resources for the tournament, including

$100.3 million in funding to expand and improve public transit in host cities

$625 million in federal security funding to cover law enforcement, cybersecurity, emergency response, and FIFA fan fests

$115 million in counter-drone technology

Advanced weather forecasting tools to help mitigate heat risks for players and fans

However, the US government shutdown has caused major delays in actually delivering the promised security funds to host cities. Many city officials expressed concerns about running out of time to prepare, and some cities quietly scaled back their Fan Festivals or planned events.

On March 12, the Department of Homeland Security finally signed off on release of the funds. But host cities may still need to scramble to get all their security measures and staff in place.

ICE at the World Cup

According to acting director Todd Lyons, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will form a “key part of the overall security apparatus for the World Cup.” ICE officials have said their role at major events is intelligence coordination rather than immigration enforcement. However, at the time of writing, the Trump Administration had not ruled out conducting ICE raids at World Cup matches.

On March 18, members of Congress introduced bills to prevent immigration enforcement within a mile of World Cup stadiums or Fan Festivals or on public transit during the tournaments, but passage of these bills is uncertain. For now, fans should expect an ICE presence in all US host cities.

Fans, whether visiting or local, should steer clear of protests or altercations involving ICE. Non-American citizens are advised to carry proof of their legal status – including passports and visas – with them to the tournament.

Public transit in World Cup cities

While the US is not as well known for its transit systems as many other nations, most of the host cities offer direct public transport to the stadium. In the others, fans will need to rely on shuttles or city buses, but these services have been added or expanded for the tournament.

Stadium upgrades and security

Most of the stadiums that will be used for the World Cup in the US were built for “American” football and usually host NFL games. They are all undergoing modifications to accommodate the wider pitch used in soccer, as well as improvements for better accessibility and traffic flow. No matter the venue:

Security will be strict, with a 2.5m (8ft) perimeter fence and a buffer zone surrounding each stadium

There are rules about what you can bring inside, such as:

Bags must be made of clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and no larger than 12in x 6in x 12in (30cm x 15cm x 30cm). If your bag doesn’t meet requirements, be aware that bag check may not be available.

Political signage is not allowed.

Loud noisemaking devices such as vuvuzelas are not permitted.

Fan Festivals and Fan Zones

Most of the cities will host a large (and likely free) FIFA Fan Festival and several smaller Fan Zones where fans without a ticket to that day’s match can gather to watch the game. Now that security funding has come through, cities are starting to formally announce their plans for these events.

For the latest on Fan Festivals and Fan Zones, follow the host cities’ social media and sign up for email updates.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta will host eight matches, including a semifinal, at Mercedez-Benz Stadium (branded Atlanta Stadium for the tournament). Their Fan Festival will be held at Centennial Olympic Park. An estimated 500,000 people are expected to visit the city for the World Cup.

Is Atlanta safe for World Cup fans?

Atlanta’s preparations for the tournament include:

New trains, more frequent service, and a more secure fare collection system on the MARTA rapid transit system.

Extended police shifts for higher visibility and specialized training for crowd management.

A $120 million investment in infrastructure, such as new streetlights and improvements to pedestrian wayfinding.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston will host seven World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium (Boston Stadium) in Foxboro. The Fan Festival will be held at City Hall Plaza. More than 3 million people are expected to visit the Boston area for the tournament.

Is public transit safe in Boston during major events?

While the MBTA (locally known as the “T”) is generally considered safe, World Cup games will increase ridership substantially. To prepare for the influx of visitors, Boston is making major investments in infrastructure and safety, including:

$46 million in federal security funding for emergency management agency strike teams and security in and around Gillette Stadium

$10 million to support World Cup-related transportation, public safety, wayfinding, and signage

$35 million to renovate Foxboro station and increase capacity and accessibility

Dallas, Texas

Dallas will host nine matches at AT&T Stadium (Dallas Stadium) in Arlington. The Fan Festival will be held at Fair Park. Nearly 4 million visitors are expected in the area.

Is Dallas safe for World Cup fans?

Dallas’ safety and security preparations include:

Security coordination between 25 local agencies and federal partners

Implementing anti-drone technology

Plans to create vehicle-free zones in downtown Dallas

Extra funding for security on Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) trains and expanded service during the event

Houston, Texas

Houston will host seven matches at NRG Stadium (Houston Stadium). The Fan Festival will be held in East Downtown (EaDo). The city is expected to welcome more than 500,000 visitors.

Is Houston safe for World Cup fans?

Houston has made extensive safety and security preparations, including:

Around $65 million in funding sought for public safety

Plans to deploy around 55 additional police officers on the METRO transit system

Large-scale training exercises with local law enforcement, federal agencies, and emergency management teams.

More than $9 million in federal funding for public transportation improvements

A Green Corridor connecting FIFA events and venues by rail and trail

Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City will host six matches at GEHA Field (Kansas City Stadium). Their Fan Festival will be held on the site of the National WWI Museum and Memorial.

Is Kansas City safe for World Cup fans?

Though Kansas City has something of a reputation for danger, city officials are making concerted efforts to help ensure fan safety, including:

$80 million in funding for extra security personnel and preparation

ConnectKC, a new, integrated bus service created for the World Cup that connects the stadium, airport, Fan Festival, and various regional sites

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles will host eight World Cup matches at SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles Stadium) as well as a Fan Festival at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Fan Zones at 26 locations around the region.

Is Los Angeles safe for World Cup fans?

Los Angeles has made numerous infrastructure and security improvements for the event, such as:

A massive modernization program at Los Angeles International Airport to improve traffic flow and connections to public transit

New shuttle buses linking key Metro Rail stations to SoFi stadium

Pop-up shade structures and hydration stations

Miami, Florida

Miami will host seven World Cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium (branded Miami Stadium). The Fan Festival will be held at Bayfront Park.

Is Miami safe for World Cup fans?

Miami is building on its experience hosting last year’s Copa América final. Preparations include:

Conducting scenario-based exercises to assess and improve existing security plans

Multi-layered security and ticketing checkpoints for fans entering Hard Rock Stadium

Expanded facilities at Miami International Airport to support an increase in visitors

New York / New Jersey

The New York New Jersey region will host eight World Cup games, including the final, at MetLife Stadium (branded New York New Jersey Stadium). More than 1 million visitors are expected.

Is public transit safe in New York during major events?

Home to more than ten major-league sports teams and annual events like the US Open, the New York area is used to hosting major events. The World Cup is on another level, but transit authorities are getting ready.

Special service will run on the Meadowlands Rail Line to and from MetLife Stadium before and after matches. Only World Cup match ticket holders will be allowed on the service.

Other transit and safety measures include:

85 buses added to increase service to MetLife Stadium

A PATH Forward modernization program aimed at improving transit speed and reliability, and updating major stations

Port Authority police deployed throughout the region to keep crowds safe

FIFA-sponsored training for law enforcement on counterterrorism and human trafficking

More than $17.5 million to protect against illegal drones

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In summer 2026, Philadelphia is hosting six World Cup matches plus massive celebrations for the 250th birthday of the United States. The matches will be held at Lincoln Financial Field (branded Philadelphia Stadium). The Fan Festival will be held at Lemon Hill.

Is Philadelphia safe for World Cup fans?

With so many high-profile events happening this summer, Philadelphia is investing heavily in preparations such as:

$8.7 million in funding to improve public transit and increase service levels

$70 million budgeted for police, fire, and emergency management

$500 million in upgrades at Philadelphia International Airport

Seattle, Washington

Seattle will host six matches at Lumen Field (Seattle Field). Unlike most host city stadiums, Lumen Field is located in the heart of downtown. The city will host Fan Festivals at multiple downtown locations and nine Fan Zones in communities across the region.

Is Seattle safe for World Cup fans?

“We’ve been working on the security plan for over three years,” said Seattle World Cup Organizing Committee CEO Peter Tomozawa. Security and infrastructure improvements include:

$17.4 million in state and federal funding to support transit needs for the tournament

Service increased on Sound Transit light rail lines and special Sounder commuter trains timed to coincide with the matches

Multi-agency communications training drills held to test and enhance security capabilities

San Francisco Bay Area, California

The San Francisco Bay Area is hosting six matches at Levi’s Stadium (San Francisco Bay Area Stadium) in Santa Clara. Fan Fest and Fan Zone locations to be announced.

Is San Francisco safe for World Cup fans?

Building on its experience hosting Super Bowl LX in February 2026, the San Francisco Bay Area is ramping up for an even bigger event, with:

$8.8 million for transportation planning, operations (including security personnel), and infrastructure improvements in and around Levi’s Stadium

$34.6 million in federal funding (split between San Francisco and Los Angeles) for drone detection and mitigation

AI technology deployed at Levi’s Stadium to assist in real-time crowd monitoring and management

Transportation and crowd safety

Traffic congestion

Traffic is likely to be heavy on match days, and some World Cup venues will not have parking available. Many host city transit agencies strongly recommend taking public transit to and from events.

Rideshare safety

Uber, Lyft and other ridesharing services are another convenient way to get around. If you use ridesharing apps:

Check the reviews of your driver before you accept

Make sure the name, face, and license plate of the driver in the app matches the person who picks you up

Travel with a friend if possible

Late-night transit

Many host cities have arranged for transit lines to run later to accommodate post-match crowds, but double-check the times so you’re not left stranded. Transit lines not associated with the tournament may have limited service late at night.

Stick to busy stations and transit hubs.

Avoid deserted or dimly lit stations at night.

Stay alert to your surroundings – don’t get distracted by your phone.

Crowd safety

Even the most celebratory of crowds can have potential for danger. Pickpockets often take advantage of packed transit cars or busy festivals. Overzealous rivalries can lead to violence. Panicked crowds can sometimes create a stampede. To stay safe:

Keep your belongings close. Carry your bag on the front of your body with the opening facing you. Keep phones and wallets in a zipped, inside pocket, not your back pocket.

Beware of distraction ploys where one thief causes a commotion to divert your attention while their accomplice steals your bag, phone, or wallet.

On public transit, be extra vigilant on crowded platforms or busy transfer stations.

At festivals or stadiums, know where the exits are and make a plan should you need to escape.

Steer clear of intoxicated or overly boisterous fans.

Health and emergency services

911 emergency number
911 is the number to call for police, fire, and medical emergencies across the US. Be prepared to answer questions such as the address you’re calling from and the nature of the emergency.

Hospital access
Most hospital emergency rooms in the US are required to provide emergency care to anyone who needs it. However, the cost of care is often very expensive, and your medical insurance from home may not cover you if you’re traveling abroad or out of state. You may want to consider travel insurance for your trip to the World Cup games to protect yourself against those potentially high medical bills.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

Heat waves
Extreme weather events are becoming more common in the US. A heat wave in June 2025 brought record-breaking temperatures to many states, and parts of the southwest are already experiencing extreme temperatures in March 2026. To stay safe in the event of a heat wave during the World Cup:

Stay hydrated, wear sun-protective clothing, and use sunscreen

Seek out shade and misting structures

Avoid activity during the hottest part of the day

Common scams to watch for

If you’re hoping to score a ticket to a FIFA World Cup 2026 match, be sure to buy from a reputable source such as the official FIFA website or from a secondary market with a guarantee such as StubHub. Be wary of anyone reselling their ticket online or on the street.

Other scams to be aware of:

Card skimmers: These illegal devices steal your card information when you use card readers at places such as ATMs and gas stations. Avoid this by tapping to pay or using an ATM within a bank.

Romance scams: Someone uses a fake online identity to gain your trust and then starts making urgent financial requests.

International travel document scams: Imposter sites claim they can help expedite your visa or passport process and charge you a high fee. Be sure to visit official State Department or government websites only.

To avoid scams:

Understand that scammers play on your emotions. Be wary of urgent, panic-inducing warnings or anything that seems too good to be true.

Avoid clicking on links or calling numbers in emails or texts if you aren’t sure who sent them.

Never give out your personal information, PIN, or passwords

Safety tips for families traveling to the World Cup USA

Make sure your children are wearing brightly colored, distinctive clothing you can easily spot. Take a picture before you head out for the day so you can show people what they were wearing if they get lost.

Write your phone number on your child’s wrist or on a piece of paper in their pocket.

Designate an emergency meet-up spot (a prominent sign or other landmark) in case you get separated.

Locate emergency exits and first-aid stations.

Here are our tips to keep you safe.

https://www.worldnomads.com

It’s one of the simplest – and most affordable – activities you can do when you travel: go for a swim. All you need is a swimsuit (or not if you're at a clothing-optional beach), maybe goggles, a mask and snorkel, a bodyboard or a surfboard. But when we travel, we’re often swimming, snorkeling and surfing in unfamiliar water with little or no knowledge of rips, surf conditions and potential risks. Here are a few things to consider before diving in, to keep you safe in the sea.

Do your research on where to swim

How to spot and stay safe in a rip

How to bodysurf safely

How to boogieboard safely

Surf lessons & legropes

How to snorkel safely

Water safety tips

Do your research on where to swim

Before you dip a toe in the water, scope out your environment to find where you can safely swim. That’s easy at a beach with lifeguards: only swim between the red and yellow flags (bodyboards and “soft” surfboards are usually allowed in this area too), read any signs explaining the day’s weather and water conditions, or ask a friendly lifeguard/lifesaver on duty.

Most beaches are unpatrolled by lifeguards (for example, only four percent of Australia’s estimated 11,500 beaches have professional or volunteer lifeguards), so ask a local where to swim: a fisherman, a family, a surfer. If there’s no one about, be extra cautious, only swim where you can stand and NEVER swim alone or after drinking.

How to spot and stay safe in a rip

According to Surf Life Saving Australia, it is rips, not sharks, that are the number one hazard at Australian beaches – and most people don’t know how to spot a rip. To find (and therefore avoid) a rip, or rip current, look for a narrow band of darker, calm-looking water moving out to sea, away from the beach; it’s basically a saltwater river taking water that’s been pushed to the beach by breaking waves back to the sea.

If you get caught in a rip, stay calm and don’t try to swim against it; you won’t get anywhere and you’ll just get exhausted. Instead, float on your back, go with the flow (the rip won’t pull you under) and signal for help – by raising one arm and calling out to anyone nearby, perhaps a surfer on a board. Another way to escape a rip, if you’re a confident swimmer, is to swim parallel to the beach, towards the breaking waves on either side of the rip, then let the waves wash you safely back to shore.

How to bodysurf safely

Bodysurfing is one of the purest forms of surfing – it’s just you and the wave – but can be risky if the waves are too big or barreling (forming a tube as they break). So start with small, crumbling waves and learn how to duck safely under them as you wade out, to conserve energy. Open your eyes underwater, not just because watching a wave break above you is a beautiful thing but because it’ll show you how deep you need to dive to avoid the turbulence of the whitewater.

To catch a wave, stand in water that’s about mid-thigh deep, in front of an oncoming wave that’s about to break, facing the beach. Just as the wave reaches you, push off the bottom with your feet and keep at least one arm out in front of you to protect yourself from a head or spinal injury when the water gets shallow. If you get dumped, curl up into a ball and wrap your arms over your head as protection.

A family on a snorkeling tour in a tropical ocean. Photo credit: Getty Images/Thomas Barwick

How to boogieboard safely

The next level up, in surfing terms, is bodyboarding – also called “boogieboarding” after the original Morey Boogie Board, invented in California in the 1970s. Because they’re short, soft and have no fins, bodyboards are generally easier and safer to use than surfboards. You can also ride them between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches – adding another layer of safety – and you can start catching waves pretty much as soon as you wade into the water.

Stand in front of a breaking wave or a line of whitewater, facing the beach, and just before the wave/whitewater reaches you, lie on your bodyboard, hold on and enjoy the ride! For more advanced fun, a pair of swimfins will help you get out to deeper water to catch unbroken “green” waves, for a longer ride. Just remember to always wear a wrist leash so you don’t lose your bodyboard and have to swim after it.

Surf lessons & legropes

If you’re a surfing newbie, it’s tempting to just paddle out and give it a go, but a surf lesson or two will teach you more than just how to stand up on your board: you’ll learn how to read the waves and spot rips (which are a surfer’s best friend because they carry you out to the take-off spot like an aquatic escalator) as well as who has right of way on a wave and how to avoid collisions.

Understanding the ocean is a never-ending project, and the more you know, the more confident you’ll become in the water. But one of surfing’s main hazards is strapped to your ankle: your surfboard. Wearing a legrope is now mandatory at some crowded surf spots. Even where it’s not legally required, a legrope is a must. It’ll save you from swimming to the beach every time you wipe out and it prevents your board from hurtling through the line-up and injuring other surfers or swimmers. When paddling out always check there’s no one behind you, learn how to keep hold of your surfboard when you fall off, and make sure you’re physically able to swim to the beach if your legrope breaks and you do have to chase your board.

How to snorkel safely

Under the waves, there’s a whole other world and snorkeling is one of the simplest, most spontaneous ways to explore it. Always go with a buddy (if you’re in a group, pair up so everyone has someone looking out for them) and tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return.

If you do go alone, stay close to shore and within sight of other people in case you get into trouble. And if you want a closer look at the marine life below, take one deep breath and dive, don’t hyperventilate (taking several fast, deep breaths before diving can lead to a hypoxic blackout, in which you lose consciousness underwater).

If you’re not a strong swimmer, snorkel with a foam noodle or wear a lifejacket, both of which have the added advantage of making you more visible to other people and to passing boats. Stick to designated swimming and snorkeling zones where you can snorkel without worrying about currents or boat traffic.

Water safety tips

The one-armed wave. If you get into trouble in the water, raise or wave one arm to signal that you need help. Try not to wave to your friends this way, to avoid confusing lifeguards or just someone walking on the beach who might think you’re drowning.

Who you gonna call? 112 is the standard international emergency number and the main emergency number in Europe, but many countries also have their own emergency numbers: 911 in the Americas, 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand and 999 in the UK. You usually can’t send a text to these numbers, but you can call from a locked phone if you have coverage and enough battery charge.

Refresh your rescue skills. Royal Life Saving Australia has tips on how to carry out a rescue safely. Brushing up on your first-aid and CPR skills is also a good idea. At the very least, remember the CPR formula “30:2” – 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths, repeated until the person starts breathing again or professional help arrives.

Keep yourself safe. You can’t always rely on others to save you. Worldwide, most people over 15 years of age (55 percent) can’t swim, according to a 2019 Gallup poll of 150,000 people in 142 countries, and that figure jumps to 72 percent in low-income countries, many of which are popular travel destinations.

Still water safety. In Australia, more people drown in inland waterways than anywhere else, according to Royal Life Saving Australia. The biggest hazards are currents, shallow water and submerged objects such as rocks or logs so NEVER DIVE into water you don’t know the depth of – ALWAYS enter the water feet-first by walking or lowering yourself in, particularly if you can’t see the bottom.

Here are our travel safety tips for LGBTQ+ travelers.

https://www.worldnomads.com

LGBTQ+ travel is on the rise, driven by wider social acceptance and a broader range of experiences tailored for LGBTQ+ travelers. The LGBTQ+ travel market generated an estimated US$357 billion in 2025, and with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%, could reach US$640 billion by 2032.

But that doesn’t mean those travels are always friendly and inclusive. A 2024 poll by Booking.com found that 59% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travelers have experienced discrimination when traveling.

So, what can LGBTQ+ travelers do to help ensure a safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free trip?

Our most important pieces of advice are to:

Know and abide by the local laws regarding homosexuality

Be mindful of local customs and social norms

Use discretion in destinations that are less tolerant of LGBTQ+ people

Read on for our complete list of tips and resources for navigating challenging situations and traveling with confidence.

What are the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers?

According to the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026, the top 10 most tolerant and welcoming countries are Iceland, Malta, Spain, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Portugal, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland.

The least tolerant countries are Afghanistan, Chechnya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Yemen.

Is it safe to travel to places where being LGBTQ+ is a crime?

There is no single, or simple, answer to this question. According to the Human Dignity Trust, 65 countries currently have laws prohibiting homosexuality. But how strictly these laws are enforced and how serious the penalties are can vary from country to country.

And even within a country that criminalizes or discriminates against homosexuality, attitudes and enforcement can vary. Large, cosmopolitan cities are often more tolerant and may have their own active LGBTQ+ communities. Tourist destinations may also be more accepting.

But wherever you go, it’s important to research the laws and social customs ahead of time.

Jesse Knight, a Trip Designer with Geographic Expeditions, says that before choosing a destination, he reviews government regulations and gathers anecdotal insight about the local climate. “I don’t specifically seek out or avoid destinations based on their attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people, though I may hesitate to visit countries actively passing anti-gay legislation,” he told us. “If choosing between countries with similar experiences, I prefer to support destinations that align with my values.

“That said, as a world traveler, you’ll inevitably visit places where political values differ from your own. In those cases, supporting gay-friendly businesses is one way to use your economic influence intentionally.

“I also believe in looking for the good in people. Being a thoughtful ambassador – whether as an American, LGBTQ+ traveler, or however you identify – can help broaden perspectives. Tourism creates exposure, and exposure often fosters understanding.”

How can you protect yourself when traveling in a country that isn’t friendly to LGBTQ+ visitors?

Some travelers prefer to visit LGBTQ+-friendly countries where they can relax and be fully themselves. But that can mean missing out on iconic and beautiful places in less-tolerant countries. If you do choose to visit a less-friendly destination:

Understand the local laws. Research your destination to find out if homosexuality is illegal, what is considered a crime, and how strict the penalties are. Human Dignity Trust offers a detailed map of countries that criminalize LGBTQ+ people.

Use discretion. In more conservative countries, the LGBTQ+ community may choose to keep a low profile, even if homosexuality is legal. Be mindful of the local culture and dress codes and avoid drawing too much attention or openly discussing your orientation.

Avoid public displays of affection. In countries where homosexuality is criminalized, hugging, kissing, or holding hands with someone of the same sex may be illegal and put you at risk of fines or imprisonment. Says Knight, “I avoid PDA even in private transfers or on trains. This is partly out of respect for local culture and partly out of an abundance of caution. I may also request two queen beds to make it less obvious that I’m traveling with a partner.”

Read the room. As Women’s Media Center columnist Marcie Bianco told us, even in places where homosexuality is legal but less tolerated, it might be smarter to leave people guessing about your relationship. Follow cultural cues – are people staring or glaring? Is there a sense of negative energy in the room? If so, this may not be the time for canoodling.

Make a plan. Says Bianco, “Following cultural cues demands that you and your partner be on the same page. This means understanding your plan for responding to any unforeseen negative circumstances. For example, if someone accosts or verbally abuses you, it’s often safer to disengage.”

Be wary of using dating apps. Authorities in countries with anti-LGBTQ+ laws have used apps such as Grindr and other digital platforms to entrap and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Criminals may extort LGBTQ+ app users by threatening to “out” them or report them to police. And hate groups may use apps or social media to lure users to unsafe locations.

What are some planning resources for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Destinations that tout their LGBTQ+-friendliness might still present uncomfortable moments for LGBTQ+ couples. Bianco highly recommends seeking out accommodations, nightlife, and activities that cater to LGBTQ+ travelers – these can help you feel safer and make your adventures more inclusive and enjoyable.

Search out websites or articles by LGBTQ+ travel bloggers and journalists that share places to go and LGBTQ+-specific annual events and activities.

Use platforms such as misterb&b to find LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, or use the Everywhere is Queer app to find queer-owned businesses and safe spaces.

Discover LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, tour operators, travel agents, and events through the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA).

How will new passport requirements affect LGBTQ travelers?

When traveling, it’s important that your passport and ID (driver’s license, etc.) match your current name and gender identity and have an accurate gender marker. This will smooth your way through immigration and airport security and help streamline the visa process if you need one.

Some things to keep in mind:

Some countries only recognize Male and Female gender markers on official documents. These countries may treat “X” (non-binary/unspecified) passports as invalid and/or deny entry. Visa applications or travel permits may also be denied.

Safetravel recommends that travelers contact the embassy or consulate of their intended destination to confirm if passports with “X” gender identifiers will be accepted.

If your current gender presentation doesn’t match your passport or ID, consider updating your documents. If that’s not possible, carrying a copy of your official gender marker change order may be helpful if you’re questioned.

As of early 2025, the US Department of State no longer issues US passports with an “X” marker. Applicants must now select either Male (“M”) or Female (“F”) corresponding to their biological sex at birth.

Existing passports using the “X” marker will still be valid for travel until they expire. But the new US policy requires airlines to submit traveler information using only “M” or “F” gender markers. Travelers with “X” markers may experience delays or questions due to discrepancies.

Be prepared before you travel abroad

What to do if you encounter a corrupt police officer while traveling

What you should not do when dealing with a corrupt police officer while traveling

Corruption is in the eye of the beholder

Be prepared before you travel abroad

A survey by Index Mundi provides a subjective scale (from 1 to 10) of how citizens in a list of 100 countries measured the level of police corruption in their country.

While there is not much a traveler can do about corrupt police in their destination, awareness of the local conditions and sensible preparation could prevent an already uncomfortable situation from worsening.

You can get through an encounter with corrupt police by educating yourself on local conditions and following a few rules of diplomacy and ego-stroking. Also, the best advice is to control your indignation and be respectful and pleasant.

Before traveling oversea, do some research on the organization of the police force in the countries you are visiting. For example, metropolitan police in developing countries tend to be the worst paid and poorly trained. Some may augment their meagre incomes by extortion and bribery.

Police car patrol. Photo credit: Getty images/Westend61

What to do if you encounter a corrupt police officer while traveling

If you are stopped or detained by a foreign police agent, consider the following strategies:

Just speak English (even if you know the local language)

Local police officers may not speak English. Even if you're a native speaker, stick with English. Often, if the officer cannot handle the transaction, he'll give up and go searching for someone else to fleece.

Be nice and don't escalate the situation

Sometimes it's best just to agree to pay the 'fine' and move on. The last think you want to do is to escalate the situation. Some other helpful tips to fight extortion by a corrupt police officer include carrying only a small amount of cash before you go out walking or driving, hiding your cash and credit cards in a safe place, and if you're stopped, make it clear the small amount of cash in your wallet is all you have. If the cop is corrupt, he'll take the small amount and leave.

Also, by humbly admitting you did commit whatever violation the officer is accusing you of and accepting the officer's "kind assistance," you'll stroke the ego and may get out of the situation.

Important: Do not offer a bribe. Ironically, in most countries, bribery is against the law. Instead, agree to "pay the fine" the officer imposes.

Insist that you go the local police station to pay your fine

This might sound counterintuitive, but if the police officer is looking for an easy mark, he can't get the money at the station. If the police officer backs down and offers to accept a fine on the spot, you should still insist on going to the station to get an official record of the transaction. Often, the police officer won't want to go through the hassle of leaving his beat and going to the station and will let you off with a warning.

What you should not do when dealing with a corrupt police officer while traveling

Don’t act tough or question the officer’s authority

The officer may occupy a low station in local society, but one of the perks of the position is authority over others, a feeling of power and importance—and the ability to make money on the side.

So, playing "king of the mountain" with a foreign police officer is a losing game. If you become verbally abusive and threaten to cause an international incident, plan on being arrested for verbal (or even physical) assault.

Don’t be impatient or say you have to be somewhere else

Expect a corrupt policeman's eyes to light up like a slot machine when he learns that you are on a deadline. You immediately become hostage to his arbitrary power to detain you, with the resulting motivation to pay up and get on your way.

Police car lights. Photo credit: Getty images/Douglas Sacha

Corruption is in the eye of the beholder

Police corruption notwithstanding, as a foreigner, you are also subject to the country's laws and different approaches to civil rights. If you're arrested in France, for example, you can expect long pre-trial detention, where, according to the U.S. State Department, "some suspects spent many years in detention before trial. As of July (2020) pretrial detainees made up 34 percent of the prison population".

French citizens, however, don't seem to worry much about police corruption. When asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 10 how big a problem is police corruption in their country, the average response was 3.74.

And that highlights another problem that you, as a foreign traveler, might encounter: locals may not care much for the welfare of foreign visitors and may accept police corruption as a fact of life.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Westend61	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1223182320	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Westend61	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Roof of police car driving in middle of rainy night </imageCaption>

Learn how to avoid an avalanche and how to survive if you do get caught in one.
The avalanche class experience

Planning for avalanche territory

What to do if you feel yourself getting caught in an avalanche

More resources

There’s a certain majesty – and terror – in looking up at steep, snow-covered mountain peaks, even in the confines of a patrolled ski resort like Lake Tahoe’s Kirkwood. “You know, the thing about the ski runs here is that only 20% are man-made gaps from trees we cut down. The rest were created by avalanche paths through the forest.” says Andrew DeGuzman, backcountry guide and instructor at Expedition Kirkwood. It’s enough to make you want to enroll in one of their Avalanche Safety classes, as I did, even if not planning to head to the backcountry.

On average, 150-200 people are killed by avalanches globally each year. In the words of an avalanche training manual, “Nature is notorious for keeping quiet most of the time and providing unforgiving feedback when you want it least.” So, no matter what your outdoor winter activity, it’s a good idea to at least brush up on some snow safety essentials in a class like Kirkwood’s AIARE Rec Level 1 course.

AIARE, the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education, is an organization that develops and supplies training programs to more than 100 different course-providers across the U.S., for both recreational and professional customers. The REC Level 1 class about avalanche safety basics is tailored for skiers and snowboarders, but relevant for anyone who may explore in snowy, mountainous terrain. It can be followed with further AIARE courses on snow science, avalanche rescue, and backcountry guiding.

The avalanche class experience

The AIARE REC Level 1 class typically takes three days, with a combination of classroom (or online sessions in the COVID era) and on-mountain, hands-on training. Students read (or download) AIARE’s 100-page manual on avalanche and snow safety, then take a series of quizzes on the materials.

The biggest takeaway from the course materials is that the best way to stay safe in avalanches is to avoid them altogether – and the best way to do that is to study, study, study the terrain and the weather and snow conditions in the specific area you’re traveling. You’ll learn to identify key features that indicate avalanche-prone slopes and snowpack.

An avalanche safety class in Kirkwood. Image credit: Expedition Kirkwood

But there’s no substitute for getting out in the snow and testing your knowledge in a safe, supervised environment. “The great thing about Kirkwood,” says instructor DeGuzman, “is that we have typical avalanche terrain in-bounds, so you can see all your textbook lessons in person.” While that sounds dangerous, resort Ski Patrol are experts at safely clearing the terrain before the mountain opens to the public. The avalanche class tours around Kirkwood, with instructors pointing out (and questioning students on) potential avalanche start points, slide paths, and safety zones.

The class also tests student skills with avalanche transceivers and probes. Teams of two bury a backpack with a beacon, while their partners try to find it with their transceiver and dig it out with probe and shovel. What seems like a simple task I found to be tricky, walking right over my hidden “victim” many times before I properly interpreted the transceiver signals, showing the importance of practicing with your equipment.

The final day of AIARE Rec-1 class at Kirkwood includes a nearby backcountry tour, with skins for uphill climbing on skis or split snowboards. The instructors give further guidance on potential avalanche risk-zones, with the students probing and sampling snow with their tools to explore the dynamics of the snowpack. “It’s important to remember you’re not just skiing on the surface of the snow, you’re skiing on everything four feet or more beneath it,” says DeGuzman, revealing hidden ice sheets that can turn a fluffy snow field into a danger zone.

For a final exam of sorts, students get a backcountry challenge to find and “rescue” two hidden backpacks buried by the trailing instructor. Even saving these inanimate objects drives an adrenaline surge for us rescuers as the clock ticks valuable seconds away. Backpacks saved, the class skis back inbounds, with a renewed respect for avalanche country, and armed with some knowledge and tools to help manage the risks.

Planning for avalanche territory

Some high-level tips from the AIARE curriculum:

Prepare: “Know Before You Go” – research conditions, forecasts, and terrain at the place you’re looking to explore. Plan for alternate routes in case of changing conditions and share your itinerary with someone outside your group. Bring communications that function outside of cellphone range (radios, satellite phones).

Plan: if you’re venturing into avalanche-prone terrain, be sure to have the right equipment and know how to use it. Do the “BEST” Trailhead check for avalanche transponders, making sure your Batteries are charged, your Electronics are working right, and the Search and Transmit functions both work. Have a pack with shovels, avalanche probes, first aid kits, and layers of weather-appropriate clothing.

Travel safely: monitor conditions as you go, and recognize avalanche terrain, working around it to reduce risk. Travel together, decide together – listen to every voice and respect any veto.

What to do if you feel yourself getting caught in an avalanche

Yell! (this will likely come naturally). Call out for attention from the rest of your group.

Try to exit the side of the avalanche (not outrun it). Snow moves slower at the edges of an avalanche.

If caught in the middle of a slide, try to stop your motion using your gear or bushes or trees.

If you can’t exit the slide, ditch your skis, curl into a ball, keep your backpack on for protection, and hold your hands in front of your face to keep your airway clear.

If buried in snow and you can’t fight to surface, remain calm (as difficult as this sounds) to conserve air.

If someone in your group gets buried, call for help, but stay at the scene to attempt rescue with beacon probes and shovels as the first few minutes are most essential.

More resources

Avalanche.org: nationwide forecasting and situation reports of avalanche dangers in popular travel areas

Weather.gov: National Weather Service forecasting and current conditions

Avtraining.org: AIARE website with training programs and links to local snow safety class providers that can be found at or near ski resorts across the US. Similar programs operate in Canada and Europe

Local avalanche info websites: check the local websites for areas you plan to travel, such as the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, or SierraAvalancheCenter.org for the Lake Tahoe area

Kirkwood.com: ski resort south of Lake Tahoe, CA, offering a full series of AIARE classes through their Expedition Kirkwood program

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / med_ved	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>530528657	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A cloud of powdery snow rises from a massive avalanche in the Caucasus.</imageCaption>

Need a negative COVID-19 test before returning home from your trip? Here’s what to know about getting tested abroad.

https://www.worldnomads.com

An increasing number of governments are now requiring negative COVID-19 tests to enter their countries, so, it’s important to research the testing options available.

As well as producing a negative test before entering those countries, you may also have to produce a negative test before returning to your own country of residence. Rules are constantly changing, so make sure you look for the latest country updates before booking flights.

When I visited Ecuador in December 2020, the United States hadn’t yet required travelers to produce a negative COVID-19 test. However, New York City, where I live, did require a test. Though the United States now requires all international air travelers to produce a negative test, it’s possible that some states may implement stricter policies than others (including mandatory quarantines, in some cases). And while some countries may require tests from passengers arriving from any foreign destination, other countries may only require tests when arriving from places with especially high infection rates or variants of the virus. Again, do your research before your trip.

Required proof of your COVID-19 test

How do I find a COVID-19 testing site abroad?

What to expect when getting tested

Understand the different types of COVID-19 tests

Checklist for COVID-19 testing abroad

Required proof of your COVID-19 test

In most cases, it’s not enough to simply check a box saying you recently tested negative for the virus. You usually have to prove this, typically by showing the negative results email you received from the testing facility. Each country specifies how recent the test has to be (72 hours, four days, etc.), so the results must show the outcome of the test and when it was administered. To eliminate any potential issues due to a poor Wi-Fi connection, take a screenshot of the results and save it on your phone. If you don’t have a smartphone, bring a printout of the results. (It’s a good idea to carry a printout anyway, in case your phone runs out of battery or gets lost.)

When I checked into my flight to Costa Rica at Newark International Airport in New Jersey in November, airline employees went from passenger to passenger, carefully reviewing their test results. Only after someone confirmed my results was I able to proceed to the security check. Once I arrived in Costa Rica, my test results were reviewed again by immigration officials before I was allowed to proceed to baggage.

In Ecuador, where I’ve seen some of the strongest safety and hygiene measures, arriving airline passengers met with medical staff who reviewed test results, took temperatures, and measured blood oxygen levels through a non-invasive finger sensor device. Only after this process could travelers proceed to customs. When I returned to the Quito airport a few days later to fly to Galápagos, my test results were reviewed by medical personal while I waited to check-in. They were reviewed again by the person who checked me in and reviewed a third time once I arrived in Galápagos.

How do I find a COVID-19 testing site abroad?

Some countries (such as Portugal or Ecuador) offer the option to get tested when you arrive in the country, but you typically have to pay for the test and your accommodation while you quarantine awaiting the results. If you’ve built time into your trip for this, you’re set, but if you expect to get your results within 48 hours and it actually takes 96 hours, your entire trip may be thrown off. As such, it’s best to secure negative test results before you travel.

A quick internet search will likely yield some useful results regarding where to find a test. Embassy or state department pages often include links to sites that offer testing within a specific country, but speaking with your hotel, guide, or tour operator could prove even more helpful. They may have recently coordinated tests for other travelers so they may know if a certain site has a six-hour wait to get tested or which laboratories tend to return results quicker. Some hotels and resorts have even started offering testing facilities for their guests on-site. (But be sure to check whether the test they offer is the type you will need.) If you don’t speak the local language, working with a guide or operator will be especially helpful.

During my trip to Costa Rica, my guide helped me find a nearby testing facility, which required that I make an appointment online the day before. In Ecuador, my hotel in Quito, Casa Gangotena, arranged to have a testing agency come right to the hotel. When the tester was an hour late (she explained how busy the service was visiting other hotels), the hotel reached out to confirm she was on her way.

The nurse who performed the author's private test in her hotel in Ecuador. Photo credit: Cassandra Brooklyn

What to expect when getting tested

The actual set-up and structure of my recent tests has varied quite a bit – an indoor clinic in Costa Rica, a hotel room in Ecuador, an outdoor tent in New York City, and a drive-through facility in Wisconsin – but the actual nasal swab experience has been the same across the board (though Latin America tends to push the swab up further than in the US). If possible, make an appointment in advance to minimize wait time, show up with your ID and appointment confirmation number, and record any phone/email address you could reach out to, should you not receive your results within the allotted time.

Aim for the earliest possible appointment in the day, which may result in your receiving the results quicker. For example, according to Mark Whitman of Climb Kilimanjaro Guide, tests taken around Tanzania (and near Kilimanjaro, where many travelers are based), are typically sent to the National Laboratory in Dar es Salaam. Tests taken after 11.30am aren’t sent to the lab until the following day, which can delay results by more than 72 hours.

Understand the different types of COVID-19 tests

There are two main types of COVID-19 tests being used to determine whether someone currently has the virus: rapid antigen tests and molecular tests (PCR tests are a type of molecular test). According to a Cleveland Clinic report, molecular/PCR tests are “more sensitive and specific” than antigen tests. The downside of the PCR test is that it takes about 24 hours to process and could take much longer if the tests are sent to an outside lab and/or if the lab is backed up. Antigen tests can give results in as little as 15 minutes. But, because antigen tests are considered less reliable, some destinations only accept PCR tests. (As of this writing, both antigen and PCR tests are accepted for admission to the US from abroad.)

On my way to Ecuador, I had a layover in Panama, where I found four COVID-19 testing sites at the airport. They were offering antigen test results in 30 minutes for only US $50. According to Metropolitan Touring, which operates tours across Ecuador, some travelers who had planned their own trips to Galápagos arrived at the airport with antigen tests, only be turned away. They hadn’t done their research to know a PCR test was required. Don’t let this happen to you.

A COVID-19 rapid testing site in the Panama airport. Photo credit: Cassandra Brooklyn

Checklist for COVID-19 testing abroad

Determine whether the country you’ll visit (and your home country) requires a negative COVID-19 test for entry

Confirm the type of test required and how recent it must be

Research how to secure a test in the country(ies) you’ll visit

Make an appointment with sufficient time to receive the results before boarding your flight

Bring your ID, money, and your appointment confirmation number to the test

Get the phone/email of whoever to contact should you not receive the results on time

Save a screenshot of your negative test results on your phone, and print out a copy if possible

Note: having been vaccinated for COVID-19 doesn’t necessarily mean you are exempt from providing a negative test – check those requirements. Passengers who have already had COVID-19 may be required to show documentation of recovery.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / RyanKing999	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1218527777	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A woman in protective gear performs a COVID-19 nasal swab test on a traveler.</imageCaption>

Michael Howard shares his advice on extra travel safety and health precautions you should take during an epidemic or pandemic.

https://www.worldnomads.com

For the latest travel warnings and alerts happening around the world, read about lockdowns, airport closures and border restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When something major happens on the world stage, be it an airline disaster, a terrorist attack, or the threat of disease, it's hard to know whether to continue traveling or not. It's always important to keep a healthy sense of perspective and take sensible precautions. But right now, it's also important to bear in mind that this coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is not a typical threat.

What we know about this novel coronavirus

How to avoid contamination

What not to do right now during the COVID-19 outbreak

Is it safe to travel during a pandemic?

Listen to the World Nomads Podcast: COVID-19

What we know about COVID-19

The highly contagious 2019-Novel Coronavirus, aka COVID-19, was first identified in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China in December 2019. On Wednesday 11 March, 2020 the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 is more insidious than some of its predecessors. Experts now know COVID-19 to be airborne, meaning very fine droplets containing the virus can remain suspended in the air for minutes or hours. People can become infected by breathing in these droplets. Keeping a distance of six feet is usually sufficient to protect against the larger droplets expelled by coughs and sneezes, but spending time in an enclosed space with others increases the possiblitiy of aerosol transmission from smaller droplets. Bear in mind that people who are infected but show no symptoms can still spread COVID-19. It's also possible to catch it by touching a surface that has the virus on it, and then touching your own nose, mouth, or eyes.

Since this article was first written, the pandemic has widely disrupted travel and caused more than 4.5 million deaths worldwide. But there is positive news on the horizon. As of this update (August, 2021), a number of vaccines have been approved for use, and vaccine rollouts have begun around the globe.

However, it will be several more months before the vaccine is widely available to everyone, and many more months or even years before the majority of the world's population is immunized.

How to avoid catching a virus

The best way to avoid catching COVID-19 is to get vaccinated, if that option is available to you. It's also very important to wear a face mask when in public spaces, especially indoors, and on all forms of public transit (even if you're fully vaccinated). Well-fitting face masks made from proper materials have been shown to be effective at preventing the spread of the virus.

Keep at least six feet of space between yourself and others whenever possible.

Routine handwashing, frequent application of hand sanitizer, and a good supply of hand wipes can effectively limit contact contamination.

While traveling, be extremely careful about what you touch. Be aware of handgrips, handrails, and poles, in buses, elevators, escalators, shuttles, subways, taxis, trams, trolleys, and stairways. Avoid touching counters at ticket stands, information booths, airport security corridors, seating areas, and lounges. Wash your hands for a long count to 20. Apply hand sanitizer often, and liberally. Avoid touching your nose, mouth, eyes – in fact, avoid touching your face entirely.

What not to do right now during the coronavirus outbreak

Avoid travel to places experiencing major outbreaks of COVID-19 or with low rates of vaccination

Avoid large gatherings and crowded public spaces whenever possible

Avoid planes, trains, boats, and buses that originate from places with outbreaks of COVID-19. Not forever – but certainly for the foreseeable future.

Is it safe to travel during a pandemic?

Travelers travel – it’s what they do. But even if you personally are not in a high-risk category, and thus are more likely to recover from the virus if infected, you have the potential to infect others. There is also a genuine risk of being stranded if a country closes its borders or cancels all international flights. Quarantine procedures help isolate recent arrivals from suspect urban centers and countries, and some destinations require negative COVID-19 tests or proof of vaccination for entry, but still.

The US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding international travel unless you're fully vaccinated. If you do travel, be sure to follow all safety requirements at your destination. It's also a good idea (even if it's not a requirement) to get tested for COVID-19 before you travel to avoid the possibility of becoming ill on your trip or spreading the virus to others.

Follow the WHO’s advice on using face masks, and keep in mind masks are most effective when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning. With new, more infectious strains of the virus being detected in areas around the globe, wearing two masks (a surgical mask topped by a cloth mask) is a wise precaution. Be careful while removing and disposing of soiled face masks (use the elastic bands or strings and avoid touching the pleated front).

Throwing money at travel accommodations through First Class, Business Class – even upgraded Economy – will increase your personal space. If you do travel Economy, do not despair. Many airlines are installing more effective air filtration and filtering systems, and most require all passengers to wear face masks (you should wear one in any case).

Do not pet or touch animals.

Avoid eating raw or undercooked food when abroad – and avoid “wet markets” where animals are slaughtered, dressed, or butchered. Avoid “finger food” in outside markets, unless you can sanitize your fingers, and reserve “family style” dining for family. Dine outdoors whenever possible.

Meeting new people is a big part of travel. Shake hands with enthusiasm if you wish, but inconspicuously apply hand sanitizer before touching your face or food. Avoid kissing strangers (lips or cheeks or even hands) and avoid affectionate hugging. Embrace travel – not the latest outbreak.

And, while you are being smart about it, check your government’s travel advisory before booking a trip or taking off – its advice may affect your travel insurance coverage in the case of an outbreak or increase in risk to your safety.

There may be an assumption, therefore, that traveling as a couple – non-sexual or romantic – would be safer for women. However, when lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women travel together, their sexuality is more visible to others than when they are traveling solo.

And this means that there are a host of concerns and considerations, from handling microaggressions to managing explicit discrimination, that LGBTQ+ couples need to negotiate while traveling.

Your travel experience with a romantic partner should be full of joy. You should be able to feel free and to indulge in shared new experiences; memories are made in the moments that you get to be together off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island or exploring the architecture of a medieval castle in Austria. Traveling together is, for many couples, a fundamental component of sharing a life.

Traveling as an LGBTQ+ couple requires extra mental work and preparation. It is important to note, too, that the travel experience of queer female couples considerably varies based on the gender-presenting dynamic of the couple: two feminine-looking lesbians traveling as a couple will experience different microaggressions and biases than a couple where one or both women are masculine, or to the straight world, do not conform with what a stereotypical woman looks like (what is called masculine-of-center or gender-nonconforming).

Here are my travel safety tips that can help make your experience as a LBGQT+ traveler as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Know the law

Research your accommodation

Pinpoint LGBTQ+ hotspots

Carry your identification

Follow cultural cues

Wield your wallet

1. Know the law

Travel preparation requires research, and not only about destinations, airfares, and activities. For an LGBTQ+ person traveling solo or with a partner, essential travel preparation includes researching laws on homosexuality.

According to the LGBTQ+ blog “76 Crimes,” currently 73 nations have laws that criminalize homosexuality. This includes, international legal organization Human Dignity Trust notes, “12 jurisdictions in which the death penalty is imposed or at least a possibility for private, consensual same-sex activity.” Furthermore, “15 jurisdictions criminalize the gender identity and/or expression of transgender people.”

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) is a terrific resource for researching destinations and their safety.

In addition to thinking about safety in this context, also think about the ethics of traveling to a destination that promotes hate against LGBTQ+ people. Do you really want to invest your money in the tourism of a nation that discriminates against you and your community?

2. Research your accommodation

After researching the law and deciding on a safe destination, pre-travel preparation should also include researching the LGBTQ+-friendless of accommodations. Because of the value of the so-called pink dollar, more and more hotels clearly present their LGBTQ+-friendliness on their website.

Another indicator is advertising: pick up a LGBTQ+ magazine, such as The Advocate or Curve, to see who is intentionally reaching out to the LGBTQ+ people, with the inherent promise of inclusiveness and friendliness. LGBTQ+ websites will more often than not include travel articles and guides that outline accommodation that welcomes the LGBTQ+ community. Likewise, pay attention to mainstream media and commercials and take stock of what types of couples are featured in the ads.

However, be advised that even accommodation that touts its LGBTQ+-friendliness might still present uncomfortable moments for LGBTQ+ couples. I cannot recount the number of times that hotel check-in has inquired about the room with the king-size bed that I had booked; “Just double-checking that you want only one bed,” they’d say, looking back and forth between myself and the female partner I was on holiday with.

Also annoying, and quite specific to lesbian couples, is being in a room with one tiny bottle of shampoo and one tiny bottle of conditioner. Two women with two heads of long hair need more than that!

Here, I cannot emphasize enough for LGBTQ+ couples to research LGBTQ+-owned accommodation and B&Bs in particular. A few years ago, my then-girlfriend and I stayed at a resort on the Costa del Sol in Spain, which was advertised as self-catering accommodation for lesbians and queer women. Not only did we feel safe but, because it was small and served a specific clientele, we made lifelong friends with other lesbians who were also staying there. That is, we didn’t have to go out to find other lesbians, our community was right there with us.

3. Pinpoint LGBTQ+ hotspots

If you’re not staying at an LGBTQ+-owned accommodation and are craving some community interaction, map out the bars, bookstores, and cafes that are LGBTQ+-owned and operated, or the ones that give strong queer vibes in their advertising, social media, or clientele.

Social media, in this regard, is extremely helpful in finding LGBTQ+ hotspots that can serve as beacons of safety, as well as providing opportunities for meeting locals and making friends and expanding your own queer community.

Another social media tip is to search out LGBTQ+ travel bloggers and journalists; they usually have websites or articles that outline the essential hotspots for “what to do” and “where to eat,” as well as LGBTQ+-specific annual events and activities to keep in mind when booking travel.

4. Carry your identification

Identification (ID) cards are necessary for any traveler, but they could be a matter of life-or-death if a traveler is trans, gender queer, or gender nonconforming. Even though the process is long and arduous, before setting off on your journey make sure that your passport and driver’s license match your gender identity. This will also ensure that the visa process, if the destination requires one, goes as smoothly and seamlessly as possible.

Make a copy of your ID cards and give it to your partner, so that if something happens to you or you were unable to access your own personal information, they would have a copy of your information.

Always carry your ID cards, you never know when you’ll need it. For example, once, when entering a mosque Turkey, my then-girlfriend was placed in the men’s entrance line, while I was pushed ahead in the women’s entrance line. Here is where an ID card can prevent such a mishap.

5. Follow cultural cues

In some places, especially where homosexuality and gay marriage are legal, being out with your partner feels safe. In these cases, it is probably safer to speak up when encountering some microaggression or bias.

In places where homosexuality is legal but less tolerated, it might be smarter to leave people guessing about your relationship. The advice, here, isn’t to “go into the closet” or “deny who you are.” Rather, it’s “have some common sense about your surroundings.” If you’re at a restaurant, feel the energy of the room, and if you get a sense of negativity being directed your way, and if people are staring or glaring. If this is the case, but you still want to eat there, maybe you agree that you can forego canoodling over candlelight at your table for an hour or so.

Following cultural cues also demands you and your partner to be on the same page. This requires you and your partner to understand your plan for responding to any unforeseen negative circumstances, for example, if someone accosts or verbally abuses you. It is often safer to disengage. If, for example, you’re stuck on a boat trip and can’t get off to get away from homophobic passengers, try find a secluded part of the ship, or take advantage of the on-shore excursions.

6. Wield your wallet

Being ignored or rudely treated? Leave. Do not pay. If you pre-paid, report the situation to management and, with a measured voice, write a review of your experience on Yelp, or on social media. This isn’t so much to shame an entity more than it is to make homophobia visible to other travelers. Airlines have been called out and are now more attentive to LGBTQ+ discrimination.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Eva Blanco / EyeEm	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1159832798	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Lesbian Women With Arm Around Sitting At Beach</imageCaption>

Whether you’re a first-time gap-year backpacker or an experienced globe-trotter, here are 10 safety tips for your first 24hrs in a new destination.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The world is populated with wonderfully hospitable, friendly and delightful people. Unfortunately, our first experience of any new destination is normally the frantic arrivals terminal of an international airport.

Every country has its share of con-artists and hustlers, and they all know that airports are the best hunting grounds for naïve new arrivals.

Whether you’re a first-time gap-year backpacker or an experienced globe-trotter, here are 10 hard-won tips to help you get through the first few hours in your new destination.

1. Red-eye special

When you’re booking flights, plan to arrive early in the day. A morning arrival leaves you with ample time to negotiate the transfer to your hotel or onward travel.

Arriving late at night adds to the pressure and leaves you feeling disoriented in a city you can’t see. Also, some airports have less security on patrol at night and taxis or buses may be erratic.

Likewise, book the departure flight for the afternoon, so there’s no rush to get to the airport.

2. Buy yourself some time

If budget allows, consider upgrading to a hotel that offers an airport shuttle. There’s nothing more reassuring than having somebody meet you at arrivals with a name card and a big smile. An upgraded hotel also gives that feeling of security, buying you an extra 24 hours in which to find your feet and learn the ropes in a new city.

3. Lose the tags

Those baggage tags looped into the straps of your backpack speak loud-and-clear to every hustler in the city: ‘JOJ!’ they scream (Just off the Jet), or ‘FOB!’ (fresh off the boat). You might as well scrawl NAÏVE across your forehead in permanent marker.

Some airports have staff at the exit cross-referring passengers with their baggage but, once you’re beyond the checkpoints, lose the evidence as fast as possible and try to look like you’ve been around for ages.

4. Learn the basics

Indecisiveness is what hustlers are looking for and a bemused expression and the brand-new guidebook gripped in white-knuckled fingers is a dead giveaway. Try to get enough prior information so that you can look confident and keep moving.

No two airports have the same transportation system so try to tag on behind travelers who look local and follow their cue…or queue.

5. The ‘domestic’ bolthole

Most major international airports also have a domestic terminal attached. Freed from the betraying evidence of those international baggage tags, you’re likely to find that the domestic terminal is infinitely less stressful…and is a less likely honeypot for hustlers.

If you’ve arrived early this terminal might be the best area in which to wait: cafes prices are often more representative of local norms and even taxis could cost less here.

6. No hurries, no worries

Take your time and don’t get rushed into anything. The best way to spend the first hour in a new country is often simply to find a quiet café table from which to check the lay of the land. Just sit and people-watch while you make a plan. There’s the added benefit that anyone who might be ‘people-watching’ you will get the impression that you’re relaxed and in control of the situation.

7. Know your notes

It helps to arrive with some cash in the local currency so that you don’t have to stop at an airport ATM. (Juggling bags while fiddling with a wallet is a recipe for disaster).

Be aware of the exchange rate and have an idea of what your airport transport is likely to cost. Once you have local cash familiarise yourself with the notes: you don’t want to pay 10-times the going rate for a taxi simply because you thought you were handing over purple 10,000 rupiah notes when you were actually showering the driver with pretty pink 100,000s.

8. Tongue-tied

In many countries where haggling is the norm the mere ability to be able to ask the price in a local language (and to understand the reply) can snag you a 30% discount on the starting price.

A few words in the local language gives the impression that you know your way around but, most importantly, it shows the level of respect you have for your hosts.

9. Stack the cards in your favor

Carry at least two credit cards, stashed in separate bags. Don’t get stranded simply because your only card was stolen, lost or eaten by a machine. One of the accounts should be loaded only with minimal funds and topped up as needed so that you have a card to use anywhere you think security might be compromised. Have a backup plan in place so that family/friends can wire funds in a worst-case scenario.

10. Taxi!

At airports take the official taxis, rather than the random ‘guys with cars’ who haunt arrival areas. An exception to this rule could be if Grab or Uber are available. These apps have brought a sort of democracy back to the world of taxis with rates that are the same whether you’re a local, an expat or a greenhorn tourist.

Since you simply input the destination on your phone there’s no need to embark on complex explanations into where you need to go. You can link your card to make the transactions cashless and there’s even an ‘emergency’ button.

<imageAttribution>Photo by Haley Black from Pexels	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Pexels	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Woman Taking Pictures of Ruins in Israel</imageCaption>

These 12 tips will help you stay safe and avoid any preventable road trip mishaps. It’s important to pack absolutely everything you need if you are driving to remote areas, just in case you don't have access to the internet, groceries or clean drinking water.

From double-checking your vehicle is in working order to studying the route, before you hit the open road, here are 12 tips to stay safe and avoid any preventable road trip mishaps.

Know the route

Offline maps and paper maps

Take a break

Stock up on water

Carry sufficient fuel

Pack enough food for two extra days

Check the weather forecast

Check your vehicle before you go

Carry spare tools

Kit your car out for offroad travel

First aid kit

Other things to pack

Know the route

Planning a road trip in advance gives you the opportunity to map out all the sites and attractions you want to see, and ensure tourist attractions and campsites are open for visitors.

Carefully studying the route you intend to drive also means you won't be as distracted looking at a map for directions.

Plot out where small towns with gas stations and grocery stores are along the way. Even if you have got a fully stocked first aid kit and sufficient groceries, try to plan a visit to civilization every few days – just in case.

Also, small towns in remote locations are a great way to step off the well-traveled road and experience some local culture.

Offline maps and paper maps

Download maps for the area you are traveling to before you lose your internet connection. Maps.me is a great option, but you can also download offline versions of Google Maps to use when you have no internet.

If your phone battery dies when you need to navigate, you may end up in the middle of nowhere with no idea where to go. Make sure you have a charge cord that you can plug into your vehicle's USB port, and/or take a rechargable power bank with you. But you should also carry a paper version of the map and plot out key locations. That way, if you do get lost you might be able to identify where you are and get back to civilization the archaic way.

Take a break

Driving while tired is one of the most dangerous things anyone can do. Plan to take a break every few hours to stretch your legs and give your eyes a rest. If you're driving with a partner or friend, share the driving every two or so hours. And always pull over for a break the moment you feel tired.

Camping along Loch Voil in Scotland. Photo credit: Getty Images/Roy JAMES Shakespeare

Stock up on water

Don’t rely on buying bottled water, six 750ml bottles per day don’t help the environment. Invest in some good quality water cans and be on your way.

If you are driving to remote locations, carry large jerry cans filled with water, and allow for 10L per day per person in remote areas. This might sound like a lot of water, but if you’re in the Australian Outback and you need to quickly wash your hands or rinse off a piece of cutlery, that 10L of water per person will very quickly diminish to 3L of drinking water per day.

Carry sufficient fuel

When driving remotely always carry extra jerry cans of fuel. Gas stations are few and far between in the wilderness, and you can’t rely on a gas station being open until all hours – so whenever you do pass one, fill up both your car and jerry cans of fuel when you can.

If you are driving in well-populated areas, jerry cans of fuel aren't always necessary. Studying your route will help make sure you plan ahead for these scenarios.

Pack enough food for two extra days

When you plan a week-long remote driving trip, you might encounter a few issues that extend your trip two or three days longer than expected. But, imagine if you only packed enough food for seven days? To be on the safe side, stock up on groceries that will definitely keep you (and your tummy) happy for two extra days. If you’re running low on food, stock up whenever you pass through a town – who knows when you’ll have access to sausage rolls again?

Check the weather forecast

As your departure date nears, keep a close eye on the weather predictions in the locations you plan to travel to. If there’s a cyclone or hurricane developing, severe thunderstorms or threat of a flood, chances are you might need to reconsider your need to travel. If you have the flexibility with time, perhaps wait until these severe weather conditions have passed until a better time to drive safely through the region.

If you absolutely must embark on the trip during severe weather, keep your family and friends updated, and check in as often as you can so that others know you are safe.

Check your vehicle before you go

If you don’t know your way around cars, take it to a local mechanic who will look over it for you and let you know if anything needs attention before leaving for your big trip. The key things to look over are: tires (including the sidewalls for cuts), tire pressures, oil, coolant, brakes, wipers, water, lights and the battery.

Carry spare tools

Don’t leave without a can of WD40, extra spark plugs, a roll of duct tape, extra engine oil, transmission oil, a multi-tool or pocket knife a roll of wire, some zip-ties and ratchet straps.

Kit your car out

When going off-road, it’s important to spend the money on accessories for your car that will help get you out of sticky situations. Common accessories to consider include a bull bar, winch, portable air compressor, tire deflator, snatch recovery gear, max tracks, long-distance radio, snow chains, satellite phone, high lift jack, shovel, spotlights for better vision at night and always carry spare tires, and a spare fuel filter.

First aid kit

Never leave for a long road trip without a first aid kit. Some of the key things to pack include: a snake bite kit, tourniquet (something to wrap above a spider bite), compression bandages, bandaids, antibiotics, tampons, space blanket, antiseptic cream, antiseptic wipes, saline solution, triangle bandage, tweezers, scissors, antihistamines, basic pain killers, CPR mask, hydralite, sunscreen and zinc, water purification tablets, aqua ear, eye drops, moisturizing cream, hand sanitizer, sunglasses/safety glasses and mosquito repellent.

Other things to pack

There are a few handy other things you can pack to MacGyver your way out of any situation. Some of my favorites are: a pair of welding gloves (to handle anything that might be hot, or if you’re sticking your hand under something you can’t see beneath), extra rolls of toilet paper, a compass, a pen, head torch and spare batteries, fire extinguisher, a box of matches and a lighter, a tarpaulin, a fridge, car awning to provide shade in non-shady places.

Pack an EPIRB or PLB

EPIRB stands for Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, and while these aren’t cheap, they can alert search and rescue services in the case of an emergency. A coded message is transmitted to a free-to-use multinational network. The distress signal is sent via satellite to the nearest rescue center.

A PLB is a Personal Location Beacon and works the exact same way, only it is designed to be carried by a person not a vessel.

These devices aren’t cheap, but if you’re going on these types of adventures often, they’re well worth having. If you do purchase one of these devices, don’t forget to register it in your home country.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Pgiam	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1150786747	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>An RV driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, USA.</imageCaption>

What is chikungunya?
How it Spreads

Regions Affected

Vaccination

Duration

Symptoms

Treatment

Prevention

How it Spreads

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease that was first discovered during an outbreak in southern Tanzania in 1952. Related to Ross River Fever, it's spread by the two mosquitos which also spread dengue fever. The name "chikungunya" derives from a root verb in the Kimakonde language, meaning "to become contorted" and describes the stooped appearance of those suffering from the disease.

Regions Affected

Caribbean

Central America

India

South America

Southeast Asia

Sub-Saharan Africa

Vaccination

Currently, there is no vaccination available for chikungunya.

Duration

The International Association of Medical Assistance for Travelers reports that symptoms tend to incubate over three to 12 days after being bitten.

Symptoms

Those infected with the virus may experience the following: joint pain, fever, skin rashes, headache <g class="gr_ gr_69 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="69" data-gr-id="69">and</g> fatigue. The joint pain may persist for weeks to months after. Those with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems may experience further complications. Seek medical treatment immediately if you feel ill, as chikungunya shares symptoms with other mosquito-borne diseases.

Treatment

Treatment for chikungunya is based on symptoms present plus hydration, rest and pain relief. Most patients recover after a few weeks. Chikungunya is rarely fatal and once you have been infected with the disease, you become immune to future infections. Do not take pain killers such as aspirin or ibuprofen as these medications thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding.

Prevention

Cover up with long-sleeved clothing, preferably light-colored

Treat your clothes and gear with permethrin. It lasts about two weeks, even after a couple of wash cycles

Use a strong DEET based insect repellent (30-35%)

Reapply DEET before you go out in the evening

Keep windows closed and use air-conditioning (if available) at your accommodation

Sleep with the fan on (if available). Mosquitoes aren’t strong enough to fight the current of most fans

If there is no AC or fan, sleep under a mosquito net treated with permethrin and tuck the ends under your mattress. Don't forget to check for holes in the net.

Now she shares her advice so you can keep yourself and your drinks safe on a night out.

https://www.worldnomads.com

When I came back to the table, my cocktail was already there. Ice sparkled prettily in the clear, bubbly soda water, while springs of fresh, green mint peeked out between generous slices of lime. Something was a bit off, though. I hadn’t ordered it.

I had been living in Prague for a few months, working at an English-language business magazine, and was thoroughly intoxicated by the Golden City and its many Czech complexities. But I still didn’t speak much Czech, so when a visiting teacher, who said he was from New Zealand, invited me for a drink, I eagerly accepted.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be an uncomfortable encounter. He guided me to a corner table inside a noisy, dimly lit neighborhood bar, and the evening mostly involved dodging his many attempts to get me drunk, and back to his flat, “just around the corner.”

At one point, the verbal jousting got to be so exhausting that I picked up my drink – a virgin mojito – and took it with me to the ladies room.

When I returned a few minutes later (drink still in hand), he had a brand new mojito waiting for me. I cheerfully declined it and suggested that he drink it instead. To my surprise, he immediately refused, becoming so angry that I ended the date – leaving the new drink untouched, and leaving the bar with my sobriety (and most likely, personal safety) intact.

What is drink spiking?

Drink spiking – adding alcohol to someone’s beverage without their knowledge – is nothing new. When narcotics are introduced into the mix, the effects can be deadly, and devilishly hard to detect. The most frequently used incapacitating drugs – central nervous system depressants Rohypnol and Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and the surgical anesthetic Ketamine – are colorless, odorless and virtually tasteless. Perfect for dumping into someone’s beverage undetected.

Although it’s difficult to determine exactly how big the problem is, drink spiking happens often enough that the UK’s National Health Service has mounted official warning campaigns against it. It doesn’t help that “date rape drugs” are so readily available, and can easily be purchased online from dealers overseas.

According to Giorgio Fadda, Vice President of the International Bartenders Association (which represents members from 65 countries) spiking happens worldwide. “The tragic phenomenon is spreading,” says Fadda. “Adding psychotropic substances to another person's drink is a form of violence, and one of many ways to control, manipulate, and bend the will of a person.”

What to do if your drink is spiked

When traveling, drink spiking can be used to distract you from theft, or to physically impair you in preparation for robbery, unwelcome sexual advances, or sexual assault. Men are also at risk. Some fast-acting drugs can take effect in as little as 15 minutes, resulting in severely impaired judgment, hallucinations, difficulty moving, speaking and breathing, and temporary paralysis.

The incapacitation can last for hours, and some drugs also cause blackouts and memory loss, which is another reason they are used to carry out additional crimes.

Unfortunately, the initial warning signs of predatory spiking mimic conventional alcohol intoxication, says clinical toxicologist, Steve Dudly, of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center. The 24-hour, toll-free hotline for poison-related emergencies is operated by medical experts from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, and handles about 37,000 calls annually.

“Generally, when people’s drinks are spiked, it [is a result of] a sedative-hypnotic,” he explains. “Symptoms include drowsiness, slurred speech, extreme sluggishness, and loss of consciousness.”

Tips to avoid drink spiking

While other drugging methods do exist – like spiking cannabis edibles with a strong narcotic like Ecstasy, or lacing cigarette tobacco with PCP or marijuana – drinks are the quickest, easiest option for criminals, says University of Central Florida Police Department Commander, James Mangan. His department investigates drug- and alcohol-related sexual assault cases on the college campus each semester.

He and Dudly suggest taking the following precautions:

Buy your own drinks, and don’t leave them unattended

At parties, avoid easy-to-spike punchbowls in favor of unopened bottled drinks

Travel with friends you trust, and use the buddy system to watch out for each other

If going out alone, let someone know where you’re headed, and when you expect to be back

Don’t flash cash or expensive equipment that could attract thieves’ attention

If you think you’ve been spiked, immediately contact someone you trust, and/or bar management or security staff

Make plans to get to a safe place, but don’t accept rides from strangers while incapacitated

If all else fails, contact emergency services yourself. And let others know, so they can guide paramedics to your location if you pass out.

“The hardest thing for people to get over are thoughts that they might have been responsible for their own attack,” Mangan says. “They need to realize it’s not their fault.”

<imageAttribution>GettyImages/Westend61	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Nomad Julia was traveling in Ghana, Africa when she was struck down with one of the most prevalent mosquito borne diseases, malaria. This is her account of what it's like to experience it.

https://www.worldnomads.com

EDITORS NOTE: Malaria, like many mosquito borne diseases exhibit a variety of symptoms and not everyone will experience each one nor experience the disease in the same way. The symptoms of malaria are similar to other mosquito borne diseases, so it's important to seek medical treatment as soon as you feel unwell so you can be treated correctly.

The symptoms of malaria

On the Friday before the weekend, I traveled to Kumasi with my host aunty. It was a five hour bus drive and I began to feel feverish on the bus but I just disregarded it, thinking I was just hot from spending so much time on the bus. Later that night when we arrived at her partner's family home all I wanted to do was sleep. I had begun to feel sick in my stomach and had developed a headache. So I had dinner and then fell asleep straight after. During the night, I felt extremely hot and felt dizzy when I stood up. I was so hot that my host aunty Angela had to pull her hand away after holding my head for 3 seconds. I told her she could fry an egg on my face if she wanted.

It was then that they said I had malaria.

How to treat malaria

I feel so very lucky to have traveled to Kumasi because Angela's partners dad is a medical doctor so I had treatment the very next morning. I was jabbed in the bum just after I took my breakfast, which I only had one spoonful of because I had lost my appetite. The doctor also gave me some dissolvable tablets that I took for the next 4 days after. That same day I went to church with the family from 10am till 3pm (church usually goes from 9 till 1) and by the end of it, I was falling asleep on Angela's shoulder because the medicine had kicked in. My muscles also felt very weak that it was difficult to walk without feeling dizzy, tired or wanting to throw up. As soon as I got home I had lunch and fell asleep, I slept for 16 hours.

The next day

In the morning I felt almost perfectly normal, it was such a nice feeling to not feel dizzy or nauseous when I stood. I was so appreciative of my body's ability to fight back. The doctor gave me another injection the next morning because he said he wanted to make sure it was all out of my system, especially because I was traveling back home the next morning.

I think I was so so lucky to have mine treated straight away because millions die each year from malaria, and I know that the symptoms get worse as time goes by.

Find out more about how to avoid this disease via our travel health article on malaria.

<imageAttribution>GettyImages/Eunika Sopotnicka	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Spending time in the ocean is a great way to relax and connect with nature, however some parts of nature aren't so friendly.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The ocean, by and large, is a relatively safe place to spend time in or near relaxing and disconnecting from the hustle of everyday life. Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water and there is an underwater world out there waiting to be explored. Most creatures will pretty much leave you alone unless you provoke them whether directly or indirectly; however some can make you ill or even potentially kill you if you don't take care.

Blue Ringed Octopus

Stingrays

Fire Coral

Coral Wound

Stonefish

Lionfish

Sea Urchins

Cone Shell

Blue Bottles

Irukandji

Box Jellyfish

Blue Ringed Octopus

Region: Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean

These eight legged creatures aren't as big as their common octopus relatives, barely growing bigger than 8 inches (20cm); but their toxic bite makes up for their size. They like to hide out in tidal pools, in rocky nooks and crannies and in coral reef areas. Blue ringed octopus are pretty timid and won't flare up those well known blue rings unless they feel threatened. Often people are bitten because they have picked one up and don't feel the bite because it is that tiny.

How to Avoid: Don't pick one up or harass it.

Medical Treatment: There is no anti-venom available. Flush the wound with clean water and protect puncture area.

Stingrays

Region: There are over 200 species of stingray, which inhabit every ocean in the world and some species can be found in freshwater environments such as rivers and lakes.

How to Avoid: These flat sharks will rarely barb someone, only doing so if it feels threatened or has been stepped on. To avoid being barbed, don't harass them and if you are walking through water, shuffle your feet rather than step through the water as sometimes stingrays will nestle and bury themselves. The stingray will sense the vibrations and move away.

Medical Treatment: Depending on the size of the animal, a stingray can inflict lacerations or a puncture wound (even to the point where the barb can be embedded). Clean the wound thoroughly, apply pressure to control any bleeding and seek medical treatment urgently as there is risk for an infection and tetanus. Surgery may be required for serious cases.

Fire Coral

Region: Found in sub-tropical and tropical waters. While not "true corals", fire coral are colonial animals known as hydrozoans. These creatures have a hard, porous skeleton from which tiny stinging tentacles will protrude, stinging anything which may brush or push on it.

How to Avoid: If scuba diving or snorkeling, maintain your buoyancy and avoid brushing up against or touching any corals.

Medical Treatment: Fire coral isn't toxic however it causes incredible pain and a skin rash, if brushed against. Rinse the affected area in vinegar and keep it clean and dry. If open wounds are present, seek medical treatment.

Coral Wound

Region:

How to Avoid:

Medical Treatment: Remove any traces of coral from the wound and flush the wound with clean water. Sterilse the wound with a disinfectant such as Betadine. This will need to be repeated daily, however if it shows signs of inflammation or infection, seek medical help.

Stonefish

Region: These guys are the masters of camoflage, often looking like coral, algae or sponge covered rocks.

How to Avoid:

Medical Treatment: Anti venom is available.

Lionfish

Region:

How to Avoid:

Medical Treatment:

Sea Urchins

Region:

How to Avoid:

Medical Treatment: It's advised to seek medical treatment immediately as they are living creatures which carry microorganisms which can cause infection or in the case of urchins, some carry toxins.

Cone Shell

Region: Found in sub-tropical, tropical and temperate waters in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, usually in inter-tidal, sandy bottomed and coral reef areas. The sea snail which lives within the shell has a barbed, dart style radula which it extends out to defend itself, administering a painful and venomous sting.

How to Avoid: There are approximately 800 species of cone shell and all are poisonous to humans. Their shells are quite beautiful and varied in pattern so if you are snorkeling, scuba diving or even just walking on the beach, avoid picking up any shells.

Medical Treatment: Clean the wound thoroughly with fresh water and administer first aid for puncture wound. Immobilize the affected location and seek medical attention immediately.

Blue Bottles

Region:

How to Avoid:

Medical Treatment:

Irukandji

Region:

How to Avoid:

Medical Treatment:

What are the symptoms and how can it be treated? What you need to know before you travel.

https://www.worldnomads.com

What is Malaria?

Symptoms of Malaria

Malaria Treatment

Is There a Vaccine?

Malaria Risk Factors

Malaria Prevention

What is malaria?

Malaria is a Plasmodium - parasitic micro-organism - spread by the female Anopheles mosquito. This mosquito type flourishes in warm, wet regions and is common in tropical and subtropical regions, from Central America to northern South America, sub-Saharan Africa and right across east and southeast Asia.

In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) World Malaria Report highlighted that 445,000 people died from contracting malaria (down from 446,000), and approximately 216 million people were infected. Most people were from the African continent followed by southeast Asia and the Americas.

Symptoms of malaria

The symptoms of malaria include:

Headache

Fever

Vomiting

Fatigue

Advanced cases can also show:

Jaundice

Seizure

Rapid heart rate

Disorientation

Coma

Death

Malaria treatment

As malaria presents symptoms common in other medical conditions, it's important to get checked out as soon as possible. If treated early, malaria can be cured.

Anti-malarials are usually administered, and the type can vary depending on the severity of malaria and parasite type. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that if the right drugs are used and administered early, those infected with malaria can be cured and all parasites can be cleared from the patient's body.

However, if the wrong drugs are given and treatment is delayed, the disease can continue and lay dormant years later.

Is there a vaccine?

Due to the complexity of the malaria parasite, there is no commercially available vaccine. WHO reports that researchers are still developing and trialing a vaccine.

However, travelers can take anti-malarial prophylaxis before heading into infected areas. But it's important to note that in some cases antimalarials are slowly becoming ineffective due to parasite resistance.

Determining which anti-malarial is best can depend on:

The age, fitness and medical history of the traveler.

The type of malaria parasite present in the destination country and its resistance level. Some drugs work better than others.

How long a traveler intends to spend in a country.

Medical treatment facilities in the destination country can vary in terms of quantity, the standard of care etc.

Malaria risk factors

According to the CDC, the likelihood of contracting malaria can depend on many factors:

Complacency with using insect repellents.

Immunity (repeated infections can result in partial immunity).

Pregnancy.

Exposure to mosquito breeding environments.

Being outdoors at night can increase exposure.

Travel to rural areas where people may come in contact with domesticated animals which provide infected mosquitos with a free meal.

Malaria prevention

The best ways to prevent malaria include:

Bite prevention includes covering up with long-sleeved clothing, using a mozzie net at night and applying a strong insect repellent.

Taking antimalarials before heading to infected destinations.

Avoiding places with standing water e.g ponds, large puddles, urns, containers, tires etc.

For pregnant women travelers, it's advised to avoid locations where malaria is endemic due to the risk of miscarriage and poor fetal development.

Here’s some advice.

https://www.worldnomads.com

It's always a shock to hear about places devastated by disaster. In September of 2023 alone, out-of-control fires took lives and land in Hawaii, and an earthquake left death and destruction in Morocco. The massively destructive Caribbean hurricanes of 2017 and 2018 still linger in memory. For travelers, the question is, how soon is it safe to travel to an affected destination? Should you go as soon as the airport opens? Hold off for a while? Or change your plans entirely?

When will it be safe to travel?

Why you should still go as soon as it's safe

How to help an affected destination recover

Will travel insurance cover you if you go?

When is it safe to travel following a disaster?

It’s not possible to draw a firm line on whether any place is “safe” or not following a disaster. Earthquakes, wildfires, and terrorist attacks can happen at any time, without warning. That being said, the likelihood of being the victim of an earthquake or terror attack is small. These risks shouldn’t deter you from traveling, but you should be prepared in case something does happen.

Hurricanes are somewhat easier to predict, but even there, experts only know a week or so in advance whether a storm is likely to become a hurricane, and the exact path or strength of the storm is hard to pinpoint. Currently, the official hurricane season in the North Atlantic is from June 1 to November 30. Storms can and occasionally do happen outside of this time frame, but it’s rare.

Again, the best plan is to be prepared, and not wait until the last minute to get out of the path of the storm. Here’s what to do in the event of a hurricane.

If a disaster has already happened, whether it’s safe to visit depends on how badly the infrastructure was damaged. Getting around might be challenging, and certain areas might be off limits – destruction to roads and hospitals might put emergency response systems under strain. If some areas are still without electricity, curfews may be in effect because of the elevated risk of crime or injury. If an earthquake has struck, there's a possiblity of aftershocks, which can sometimes be as large or larger than the original tremor.

Natural disasters such as floods can also cause outbreaks of diseases like typhoid or cholera. So it’s wise to check on local conditions before visiting, and use your best judgment.

If the airports are operational, some hotels and major roads are open, the air quality isn't hazardous, and there are no severe shortages of food, water, or power, you can generally assume the destination is safe to visit.

Why you should still go as soon as it’s safe

Many of the places that were affected by recent events, such as the island of Maui in Hawaii, are heavily dependent on tourism. The Caribbean region, in particular, is more reliant on tourism than any other region in the world.

Some Caribbean islands were still recovering from the impacts of 2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria and 2018 Hurricanes Dorian and Michael when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. So your tourist dollars can go a long way towards aiding their comeback.

How to help an affected destination recover

Bear in mind that the longer a destination goes without visitors, the harder it will be for them to get back on their feet.

Once places are ready to receive visitors, try to spread your dollars across multiple vendors. Consider visiting a place that’s suffered the effects of recent disasters and is now recovering, rather than a place that was left untouched. And instead of spending all your money at a resort, go eat at the local restaurants or buy souvenirs from a local craft stand.

Will travel insurance cover you if you go?

It depends. Depending on your country of residence, if you made your plans and purchased insurance before the hurricane, fire, or earthquake became a known event, you may be covered for trip cancellation if your accommodations at the destination were made uninhabitable or there has been a cessation of travel services for at least 24 hours due to the disaster.

But you wouldn’t be covered if you bought a plan after the disaster, went to the destination, and found your accommodations weren’t habitable due to that storm or disaster.

If you travel to the region shortly after the disaster and make a claim unrelated to that disaster, you would most likely be covered.

And if you bought a plan right now, you would likely be covered against future disasters provided they aren’t currently known or forecasted events (a hurricane or typhoon becomes a known event once it’s given a name – earthquakes, fires, or terrorist incidents become known at the time they happen).

<imageAttribution>Pixabay/Joe Mustang	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Pixabay	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Caribbean destination with storm clouds brewing</imageCaption>

With the number of lone wolf terror attacks on the rise across the world, it’s time to take your personal safety into your own hands with these practical tips on how to survive an attack.

https://www.worldnomads.com

With the number of lone wolf terror attacks on the rise across the world, and with little prospect of governments being able to prevent them, it’s time to take matters into our own hands and do whatever is possible to protect ourselves in an incident.

Security authorities around the world now agree that the best course of action is NOT to shelter in place – in other words, hide under your desk – but to RUN to safety if you can, or to HIDE in a secure location.

During the June 2017 London Bridge terror attack, UK police used this protocol for the first time: Run, Hide, Tell is their mantra, but the head of London Police’s anti-terrorism unit also adds in this video explaining the strategy, that if both of those actions fail to protect you, and you come face-to-face with an attacker you may choose to fight back – physically.

Run, hide, fight

The US Department of Homeland Security is more explicit and includes FIGHT as it’s a third part of the strategy. This is a methodology that has proven a success and was put into action in the London Borough market attack.

Scores of ordinary people confronted by the armed terrorists fought back by throwing tables and chairs and drink glasses. Reports suggest the first police officer on the scene at London Bridge took on all 3 terrorists while armed with just his baton, and was very effective – the so-called lone wolf turned out to be stray mutts it seems.

You don’t have to be armed to fight back, you can use with anything you have, an umbrella, a tape dispenser (they’re usually quite heavy), even a pen. But is vital that you commit to the fight, and don’t stop until you are dead or the attacker has stopped.

The number one survival tip

Preparation.

Run, Hide, Tell (and Fight) are actions to take when you’re in the moment. But how you prepare for that moment is crucial. It is natural human instinct to freeze when something unusual occurs. It is actually taking the brain a few seconds to comprehend this abnormal behavior. It’s called normalcy latency. Almost all of the deaths in an active shooter situation occur in the first few minutes while victims are stunned and try to make a decision about what to do.

If you have already made up your mind about what to do in such a situation – through preparation – you can spring into action (run, hide), and those seconds may keep you alive. There’s a theory and deep research behind this method. If you want to know more look up the OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) that is credited to master military strategist John Boyd – starting with this great article, then follow the links.

How to prepare

Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep yourself on low-level alert. Gunfire doesn’t sound like it does in the movies, it’s more like a popping sound, which is why so many people say they thought the gunfire was a car backfire or fireworks. Don’t ignore that sound. Establish as quickly as possible where the sound is coming from, and make a decision on whether you need to act (run, hide)

Check out all the exits from your location. Walking through a shopping mall, look for the green exit signs. Restaurants always have an exit out the back in the kitchen area, it may be closer and safer than the front door

Be alert to unusual behavior. If you see someone enter a building through an unusual route, such as a fire escape, be prepared. It might just be that person’s shortcut, but if he pulls out a weapon you’re already ahead of the game and ready to act

Avoid the worst of the crowds. Terrorists aim to inflict maximum damage so they look for crowds of people. This was the situation in the Manchester Arena attack in May 2017. Crowds of people shuffling through the venue exits were hit with the full force of the blast. Sit in your seat in the venue until the worst of the crowds have passed.

Don’t be paranoid

Be prepared but don’t be paranoid. Sadly these are skills we will have to incorporate into our daily lives, but they don’t have to be a burden. For example, we all know that stepping out in front of traffic could have deadly consequences. To combat that we know to look before we step out. We do it instinctively, but we had to learn that skill. Schools teach it to young children and parents are always reinforcing that message.

One day soon checking for exits, listening for sounds, observing unusual behavior and having a plan of action will be just as instinctive.

<imageAttribution>iStock/franckreporter	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>
