Everyone has heard of the Tour du Mont Blanc; your friend who went to Italy won’t stop raving about the Dolomites. But few know about Europe’s best-kept secret. Nestled in Albania’s Alps (known as the Accursed Mountains) is a hike that will leave you breathless. Although most complete it in a single day, the route can also be extended into a multi-day trek, using either Valbone or Theth as a base to explore deeper into the mountains.

Much less busy than its more famous counterparts, the Valbonë-Theth trail offers a rare sense of solitude and serenity with nature. Crossing the Valbonë Pass suits all types of hikers - novices, families, or even experienced hikers who want to avoid overtourism.

Every second on this hike spoiled my eyes. From the ferry through the Koman Valley to the Valbonë Pass with its view into the valley, and a (freezing) swim in Theth’s Grunas Waterfall, every moment is visually, physically and mentally rewarding. Of all the places on Earth where you wouldn’t want to be without a camera, this tops them all. I carried my trusty 35mm film camera loaded with a roll of Rollei black-and-white film. I hope you enjoy these photographs throughout the article.

The best time to hike is during the European summer months, between June and September, when the weather is most reliable.

This article is a one-stop shop for everything you need to know regarding this alpine adventure. It will cover:

How to get to Valbone

Different Ways of Experiencing the Trail

What to Expect from the Hike

How to Get the Most from the Trail

And Finally, How to Hike it Safely.

The ferry cuts through the Koman valley, and every second you’re spoiled by views like this of the Albanian alps.
How to Get to Valbonë: Ferry, Bus & Scenic Routes

Although it involves two minibuses and a 2-hour ferry, getting to Valbonë can be simple and inexpensive with some planning. Many hikers purchase tour packages through hostels in Tirana or Shkodër, covering transport and accommodation.

But if you're like me, and you want a bit more adventure and spontaneity, camping is also a great option.

I stayed in a cheap campsite in Shkodër (6 euros) within walking distance of the 6:30 a.m. bus. Booking through the official Komani Ferry website for 26 euros covers a minibus to Koman, the ferry to Fierze, and another minibus to Valbonë. Each minibus is about an hour, and the ferry takes roughly 2.5 hours.

The journey is stunning, careful when you blink, because you don’t want to miss a second of this trip, from lakeside roads to the fjord-like ferry ride, and then getting your first glimpse of the Albanian Alps; it’s a view that will stay with you forever.

Views like this from the ferry make the journey just as memorable as the hike itself. Photo credit: Gabriel Mungarrieta

Camping vs Guesthouses: How to Experience the Trail

Wild camping in Albania is legal, which made carrying a tent and food an exciting option. I stocked up on supplies in Shkodër since Valbonë has limited grocery access. I used Park4Night and Maps.me to scout potential camping spots offline.

If camping isn’t your style, there are many great accommodation options for different budget levels. Most of these spots will also provide food (extra payment), with some even offering packed lunches for you to purchase and take on the hike. The price of accommodation can vary, with some starting at 10 euros.

Once you arrive at Fierza and get off the ferry, the bus driver will drop you off at your chosen accommodation. I recommend staying furthest into Valbonë as the trailhead begins about 3 km (roughly 1.5 hours) up the dry riverbed at Rragam.

This section is less scenic than the main hike, so I decided to get this out of the way as soon as I got dropped off in Valbonë. In Rragam, accommodation and food options are minimal but affordable; I camped for free at one spot.

This free camping spot in Rragam made for a perfect base. A breathtaking view to unzip your tent to in the morning. Photo credit: Gabriel Mungarrieta

The Valbonë-Theth Hike: What to Expect

The trail itself is pretty easy and can be done by people of all ages and skill levels. At around 15 km, it takes 6-8 hours to complete, with a 1000 m ascent to the Valbonë Pass at 1800 m. The view into the valley and on the other side into Montenegro feels like standing on top of the earth. Once at the pass, a short extra climb of 5 minutes leads to a rock offering even more dramatic scenery, daunting, but worth it.

The descent is about 800 m, mostly through forest, which is perfect for avoiding the midday sun. Start early and pace yourself, and by the time the sun is high in the sky, you are already on the way down, protected by the forest.

Water is essential; cafés at the trailhead and 2 hours in provide refill options, though streams are available if you carry purification tablets.

Sharing the path with locals, pack animals, and the quiet rhythm of the mountains. Photo credit: Gabriel Mungarrieta

Life Along the Way: Guesthouses, Food & Culture

This adventure is as much about the people as it is the scenery. Albanian people in general are very hospitable, but the locals I encountered on this hike go above and beyond.

One night, at the free campsite in Rragam, I shared a meal with the family running it and some fellow hikers. All of us from different backgrounds laughing over a warm meal and some shots of homemade raki, as the sun set on the Albanian Alps behind us.

The family offered great advice for exploring before and after the hike. In Rragam, the 45-minute hike to Rragami Waterfall is simple and scenic. Truth be told, when I went, the waterfall I found was nothing more than a little stream, but it offered a nice view of the valley.

In Theth, the Grunas Waterfall was very impressive to see, and quite a popular spot. After a moderately tough hike to get there, a swim in the freezing mountain water was welcomed. The Blue Eye of Theth is another highly recommended spot, accessible by a short hike or minibuses.

Hikers cool off at Grunas waterfall, a powerful cascade just outside Theth and one of the most rewarding side trips after the Valbona–Theth hike. Photo credit: Gabriel Mungarrieta

Hiking the Albanian Alps Safely

While the Valbonë-Theth hike isn’t technical, it is still a full mountain day in a remote part of Albania. A bit of preparation goes a long way in making the experience safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Start early to avoid the midday heat and give yourself flexibility if the hike takes longer than expected.

Carry enough water and refill at cafés along the route; drink from mountain streams as a last resort.

Pack warm layers, even in summer. Nights in the mountains can be cold, especially if you’re camping.

Consider travel insurance that includes emergency medical cover and 24/7 assistance for remote hiking routes. You may never need it, but knowing help is one call away may add confidence on a trail where villages and clinics are hours apart.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

A wild camping spot at the very peak of the Valbonë pass. Even during summer, temperatures get very low, good quality cold gear is definitely recommended for this altitude. Photo credit: Gabriel Mungarrieta

The Valbonë-Theth hike is wild without being intimidating, remote without feeling isolating, and still refreshingly untouched, the kind of place that reminds you why walking through mountains will always beat watching them on a screen.

<imageAttribution>Gabriel Mungarrieta	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

What to know before you go, from transport and crowds, to weather and emergency prep

https://www.worldnomads.com

Attending the Winter Olympics in Italy is the kind of trip people dream about for years. The setting and atmosphere couldn't be more perfect: world-class athletes competing against a backdrop of breathtaking alpine scenery, all while the electric energy of the Olympic spirit surrounds you. Add to that the fact that you’re in Italy—home to some of the best pasta you’ll ever taste—and it’s easy to see why these 2026 Games might be worth the splurge and the crowds.

Of course, as thrilling as the experience is, traveling to a winter sports destination comes with its own challenges. Icy streets, packed venues, sky-high hotel prices and steep mountain passes can quickly turn small inconveniences into major headaches. That’s why a little preparation goes a long way. From considering travel insurance to understanding local rules, these tips may help you stay safe, reduce stress, and make the most of your Olympic adventure.

Plan Ahead: Understand Local Transport

Avoid the Crowds

Stay Connected, Safely

Protect Your Belongings: Pickpocketing Precautions

Stay warm, stay safe

Emergency Medical Preparedness

Local Laws and Customs

Plan Ahead: Understand Local Transport

When attending a major event like the Winter Olympics, knowing how to get around is key. Research shuttle services, ski lifts, and public transport schedules well in advance to avoid last-minute chaos. Look into the pros and cons of renting a car – it may be more hassle than it’s worth, depending on where you stay.

Having spent time in this part of Italy, I can say the views are stunning, but the mountains can be tricky to navigate, even on a calm summer day. You’ll want to download offline maps, as cell coverage can be patchy in certain mountain areas.

Avoid the Crowds

Crowds at the Olympics can be intense, so planning how to move through venues is crucial. Arrive early and familiarize yourself with the layout of each venue. Secondary entrances or early-access events can offer a calmer experience.

As exciting as this time is, it might be tempting to pack your schedule full of events. However, consider leaving plenty of time to get between venues and factor in some down time to decompress (and warm up!) at a café or back at your hotel.

Stay Connected, Safely

Busy Olympic venues are also hotspots for cyber threats. Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi to protect your data, enable device location tracking, and back up important documents like your passport and tickets in an encrypted format. These steps may help you recover crucial information if your devices are lost or compromised.

Protect Your Belongings: Pickpocketing Precautions

The Olympic experience attracts more than just fans and athletes. Unfortunately, this is also a big event for thieves – both amateur and professional. A few simple steps can help you secure your belongings:

Use RFID-blocking wallets to prevent electronic theft of credit card or passport data.

Choose anti-theft backpacks with lockable zippers and slash-resistant straps for extra security. In big crowds, wear your backpack in front of you and do your best to avoid distractions. I’ve seen a bag get swiped in an instant at a train station when a traveler was distracted.

Photograph your luggage and gear before departure—this may help with travel insurance claims if something goes missing.

During transit, keep valuables in carry-on or on your person rather than in checked baggage to reduce risk.

Avoid leaving bags unattended in crowded venues or public transport, even for a moment.

Consider travel insurance that covers theft or loss of sports equipment and electronics.

Stay warm, stay safe

Italy in the winter is beautiful but unpredictable. A sunny day can have you in a t-shirt and a snowy day can have you buried under layers. The best packing advice is to bring a bit of everything and remember, you are attending the games for the love of sport, not for fashion. You’ll likely be wearing the same coats and mittens over and over again, and so will everyone else. Bring waterproof outwear to stay dry during sudden downpours and pack traction aids for your shoes (like small crampons or shoe grips) as even the city sidewalks can be icy.

Emergency Medical Preparedness

Emergency medical situations made up 27 percent of all U.S. travel insurance claims (across all US travel insurance companies) in 2024. Twisted ankles, car accidents, or sudden illness can happen when you least expect it. Some issues may only require a doctor's visit and prescription, while serious situations could involve hospitalization, surgery, or even emergency evacuation. Now, combine that with icy roads, slippery slopes and thousands upon thousands of Olympic fans, and you may want to be extra prepared.

Tips for emergency preparedness:

Store your travel insurance’s emergency assistance number in your phone, as well as the local emergency number

If you are skiing, also save the ski patrol’s number in your phone

Understand your travel insurance policy benefits in case of illness, accidents, or sudden emergencies

Local Laws and Customs

Understanding local rules and customs is an important part of staying safe and enjoying your trip. For example, drinking in public areas like streets or train stations is restricted in many Italian cities, and some towns enforce quiet hours where loud celebrations or public drinking could get you fined. On public transport, you are expected to validate your ticket before boarding, and priority seating is reserved for elderly, pregnant, or disabled passengers.

Ski parks also may have rules you might not expect. All Italian ski resorts require helmets for children AND adults (this is new for the 2025/26 season), and reckless skiing or snowboarding can result in fines or liability for accidents. Lift passes are checked at gates, and sharing or misusing them can lead to penalties.

Like most of Europe, tipping at restaurants in Italy is not expected. However, a small amount is appreciated – just don’t overtip as that can be taken the wrong way. A good rule is to leave a little extra if you received great service, but don’t feel like you have to.

There is nothing like cheering for your favorite athletes live, exploring charming Italian towns, and soaking in the atmosphere of the Alps. With a bit of preparation, this adventure can be as safe as it is unforgettable. Get out there and enjoy Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026!

Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions, and cover varies between your plan, Country of Residence, and any options you choose.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

test

https://www.worldnomads.com
test
<imageAttribution>	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

This island nation is a jewel in the Mediterranean Sea, between Sicily and North Africa.
Crime in Malta

Climate and weather

Getting around

Driving in Malta

Swimming in Malta

Emergency contacts

This archipelago nation, known for rich history and culture, is made up of seven small islands. Generally crime-free, here are a few tips to help you navigate Malta safely.

Crime in Malta

Malta is generally a very safe place to visit, but like anywhere with visitors, bag-snatching, pickpocketing and other petty crime can occur particularly in nightclubs, on the beach and at markets and transport hubs. Thieves might also target ATMs and parked cars.

Thieves target people using ATMs. Theft from parked cars occurs.

Pickpocketing may occur on popular bus routes including those from Sliema, St. Julian's and Paceville to Valletta.

Use normal common sense in regard to your belongings and when withdrawing money from ATMs.

The clear waters of Ghar Lapsi, Malta. Photo credit: Getty Images / Paul Biris

Climate and weather

Malta has a lovely Mediterranean climate with a daily average of around 12 hours of sunshine during summer which tends to be hot and dry, but with cool sea breezes. Winters are mild, with short cold spells brought by the north and north-easterly winds from central Europe.

Swimming in the sea in the sea is possible well into the winter months, and the peak beach season can last until late October.

The average temperature during the year is a pleasant 18°C, with January averaging a slightly lower temperature of 12°C, and the peaking to an average of 30°C in July and August.

Spring is the ideal time to visit the Maltese islands to avoid summer heat.

Getting around

Malta’s islands are small and easy to get around. Public buses are a convenient and cheap way to travel around, with plenty of sightseeing opportunities along the way.

Visit the Malta Public Transport website to plan your journey.

There are ferries between the islands. The Gozo Channel ferry service links Cirkewwa, Malta to Gozo, and takes about 20 minutes each way.

A ferry service from Valletta, Malta to Gozo takes around 45 minutes each way. There are also regular boat services between each island and Comino.

Driving in Malta

Driving around Malta is a great way to explore at your own pace. In 2019, there were 16 road deaths in Malta. This equates to 3.2 road deaths per 100,000 of population (compared to the UK average of 2.6 road deaths per 100,000). There are plenty of car rental options so be sure to compare prices to get the best deal and always use a reputable company. You must be at least 21 to rent a car, and drivers under 25 may incur a surcharge. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road (like in the UK) and speed limits are usually signposted. Where there is no sign, national limits apply:

80 km/h on the open road and

50 km/h in built-up areas.

For more information, you can contact Transport Malta by sending an email to info.tm@transport.gov.mt.

Swimming in Malta

During the summer, most beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and operate flag safety systems. Make yourself aware of the flag system and follow any warnings; red flags mean dangerous or hazardous conditions. Always swim within designated swimming zones and be cautious if there are no lifeguards, flags or signs. Follow local advice if jellyfish are present.

You can find more information and a general code of conduct for beaches in Malta on the Malta Tourism Authority website.

Emergency contacts

For police, fire service and emergency medical service dial 112. These calls can be made from any phone and are free of charge.

Here's how to navigate this Portuguese outpost safely.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Madeira is spectacularly beautiful and ideal for adventure, but how safe is it? This island, off the northwestern coast of Africa, is a fantastic destination for travelers of all ages. It’s long been most popular with retirees but now Madeira is quickly becoming one of the world’s digital nomad hotspots.

Crime in Madeira

Madeira experiences very little crime, and what there is does not usually target visitors. Even typical traveler concerns, such as pickpocketing, are rare on the streets of Madeira. In spite of this, I still recommend taking your usual safe-traveler precautions;

keep valuables close by and/or hidden, especially at night.

when walking after dark, stay close to main or familiar roads – it’s always best to be smart while in a new country.

The fishing village of Cámara de Lobos in Madeira. Photo credit: Getty Images/ Eduardo Ramos Castaneda

Scams in Madeira

The only real scam concern in Madeira (specifically in the capital Funchal) is the possibility of being overcharged by a taxi driver. To avoid this, always insist on using the meter, or better yet, grab an Uber.

Drugs and alcohol in Madeira

Overall, drug abuse and drink spiking are not big issues in Madeira. Drugs are not sold openly but are available in some circles. Alcohol is of course common and can be found at any local bar, restaurant, cafe and even petrol stations.

If you do plan on partying on Madeira, do what you normally should: remain in control, know where your drink is at all times, and if it’s drugs that you plan to dabble in, keep in mind that drug possession is illegal on Madeira and that there are stories of drugs such as cocaine being cut with less savory ingredients such as speed or crystal meth. Your best option is to simply not use drugs.

Transport: getting around safely

In order to drive in Madeira, you need to be very confident and experienced. It can be surprising to see local drivers hitting tight spots at speed, and if you’re not used to it, it can feel pretty aggressive.

To stay safe and have a trip without mishaps, never try to overtake on dangerous curves. If you find drivers trying to overtake you, let them – there’s no point in getting into a road war.

If you plan on self-driving, don’t exceed the speed limit, never drive under the influence, and be extra careful on mountain roads and during inclement weather. Roads in Madeira are notoriously steep and winding. I also recommend you avoid driving at night, when you’re more likely to encounter reckless driving.

While Madeira’s climate is consistently mild, gnarly storms can blow in without warning. Always check the weather in the morning before you set out for a drive, especially if you plan to head to more remote areas.

It’s also a good idea to have some sort of offline map of the island downloaded on your phone – I personally think maps.me does the job well. If you don’t plan on self-driving, hire a driver from a reputable company.

Staying safe on hikes

Madeira is hiking heaven, and there are some seriously epic trails to get acquainted with. But, with incredible views can often come a bit of danger, and Madeira is no exception.

The island is known for its iconic levadas (water irrigation channels), many of which now are linked by hiking trails. Even so, some of these might be dilapidated and possibly hazardous so be careful. Make sure you carry enough water, a quality rain jacket and warm layers in case the weather turns. Be sure to only attempt hikes that fit your skill level, and if you want to push your limits, take a local guide along.

Weather and climate

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira’s weather is changeable and you might find yourself caught in a storm.

Keeping a rain jacket close by is always a good idea. Although major flooding occurred in 2010, such events are rare.

Rip currents are possible, though not common. If you plan to swim, make sure the beach is safe and obey any flags or advice from lifeguards. And if you’re considering water sports (as you should) always check company reviews and wear a life jacket when applicable.

The sun in Madeira can be fierce – always wear sunscreen and a hat.

Overall, Madeira is a very safe destination for families, backpackers, adventurers, solo travelers and retirees. As long as you use your commonsense travel safety knowledge, you’ll have a great time enjoying the island known as the Pearl of the Atlantic.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Marko Stavric Photography	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Find out about COVID-19 travel restrictions and entry requirements, crime, and other safety considerations.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Coronavirus (COVID-19) travel restrictions in Gibraltar – updated 15 June 2021

Who can travel to Gibraltar?

From 13 June, the rules for people arriving in Gibraltar have changed. Entry requirements to Gibraltar depend on whether you are fully vaccinated or not, the countries you have visited in the 10 days prior to your arrival, and whether they are on the green, amber or red lists.

See the Government of Gibraltar Technical Notice which sets out entry requirements in full.

Additionally, the official Gibraltar Tourist Board website lists the countries included in the green, amber and red lists, and provides comprehensive information about the requirements in respect of COVID-19 for travelling to Gibraltar, including information on how to book your COVID-19 tests before you arrive. The website also gives information for travellers entering by sea, and crossing the land border into Gibraltar.

If you have only been in countries or territories on the green list in the 10 days preceding your arrival in Gibraltar by air and are fully vaccinated, then you must upload your vaccination certificate on the Passenger Locator Form. You must book a COVID-19 lateral flow test before arriving in Gibraltar. This test must take place within 24 hours of arrival. If you are remaining for more than 7 days, you must also take a second test on day 5.

If you have only been in green list countries in the 10 days before arrival and are unvaccinated, you must have a pre-flight COVID-19 lateral flow test taken no more than 48 hours before your flight to Gibraltar. Before you travel to Gibraltar you must also book a COVID-19 lateral flow test, to be taken in Gibraltar within 24 hours of your arrival. If you are remaining in Gibraltar for more than 7 days, you must also take a third test on day 5.

If you have been in a country on the amber list in the 10 days preceding your arrival by air to Gibraltar and are fully vaccinated, then you must upload your vaccination certificate on the Passenger Locator Form, and you must take a COVID-19 lateral flow test immediately on arrival in Gibraltar. You must also take a second test on day 5 after arrival.

If you have been in an amber list country in the 10 days before arrival and are unvaccinated, you must have a pre-flight COVID-19 test taken no more than 48 hours before your flight to Gibraltar. Once in Gibraltar, you will be required to self-isolate for 5 days and take a COVID-19 PCR test on the day of your arrival and on Day 5. You must remain self-isolating until the day 5 test is conducted.

If you have been to a country on the red list in the previous 10 days, you are not permitted to enter Gibraltar, unless you meet one of the specified exemption categories. The exemption categories are listed in this Government of Gibraltar Technical Notice.

If you meet the red list exemption categories to enter Gibraltar by air and you are fully vaccinated, you must upload your vaccination certificate on the Passenger Locator Form. You must have a pre-flight COVID-19 test taken no more than 48 hours before your flight to Gibraltar. You must also have a COVID-19 PCR test immediately on arrival. If you are remaining in Gibraltar for more than 7 days, you must also take another COVID-19 PCR test on day 5.

If you meet the red list exemption categories to enter Gibraltar by air and you are unvaccinated, you must have a pre-flight COVID-19 test, taken no more than 48 hours before your flight to Gibraltar. Once in Gibraltar, you will be required to self-isolate for 10 days and take a COVID-19 PCR test on the day of your arrival and on Day 10. You must remain self-isolating until the day 10 test is conducted.

All travelers must complete a Passenger Locator Form.

Note for travelers from the UK: Passengers who transit into Spain and return to Gilbraltar for their flight back to the UK are reminded that when arriving in the UK, they must follow the rules for the hightest-risk country or territory they have been in or passed through in the previous 10 days. Spain is currently on the UK Government’s Amber list.

COVID-19 restrictions for day trippers and organized tours

No testing will be required.

Visitors must keep within their bubble.

Masks must be worn at all times.

Hand sanitizing regime to be followed at all times, especially when getting on and off the vehicle.

If coming as a party organized by a tour operator, the operator will require to submit to the Borders and Coastguard Agency a list of the visitors to include;

Full Name

Nationality

Amber country visited in the last 10 days

Crime in Gibraltar

Violence and street crime are rare. However, there have been reports of people walking between La Linea (Spain) and Gibraltar at night being attacked and robbed.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / swilmor	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>157505277	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>The sharp peak and steep cliffs of Gibraltar as seen from a beach in southern Spain.</imageCaption>

With its rich culture, diverse landscapes and stunning coast, Spain is fantastic to explore safely by car.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Spain is a wonderful country to explore by car. Geographically diverse, the country is a mix of stunning coastline, mountains and countryside dotted with fascinating cities and world heritage landmarks. Roads are well maintained, there is an extensive freeway (autovias) system.

Here’s how to safely get the best out of a Spanish road trip.

Do I need an international driver's license for Spain?

To drive any car or a motorbike over 125cc, you must be at least 18, or at least 16 to drive a motorbike up to 125cc

You must have a valid driver’s license

You must have proof of motor vehicle insurance (with a minimum of third-party cover) and ID

Driving without a license is not only punishable by a prison term but will also void your motor vehicle insurance.

Renting a car in Spain

To rent a car in Spain you will need a valid EU or an International Drivers Licence and be at least 21

Most rental car companies will ask for a deposit to be held on your credit card, which will be refunded once you return its undamaged car

Always thoroughly check the car over for any damage or broken parts before you drive away, and always return the car with a full tank to avoid unnecessary charges

Picking up and dropping off the car in the same location usually works out cheapest.

Photo credit: Getty Images / Allard Schager

Road rules for driving in Spain

Driving is on the right-hand side of the road, and overtake on the left

All drivers must carry two red warning triangles to be used in the event of an accident or breakdown to be positioned 50 meters in front of and behind the vehicle

You must also have a functioning spare tire and the tools to fit it and wear a reflective vest if you step out of the vehicle

Even though most gas stations sell alcohol, drink driving is illegal, laws are strict and the police regularly carry out roadside checks for alcohol and drugs. Penalties include heavy fines, loss of license and even imprisonment

The police also issue immediate fines for a number of reasons including speeding and not using seat belts which are compulsory in the front and back seats. Children under 12 must use the appropriate child restraints and sit in the back seat

Talking on a mobile phone is not allowed unless it’s a hands-free unit, even when pulled over on the side of the road, and earpieces are not allowed

There are rules around emissions to limit air pollution, and if levels are exceeded, car access is restricted, and speed limits are imposed

Full-beam headlights are not allowed in built-up areas and you must use dipped lights in tunnels

Be wary of fake police officers. Traffic police always wear a uniform and carry official ID

See the European Commission, AA and RAC guides for more information on driving in Spain

Dial 112 in an emergency.

Read the latest travel warnings and alerts.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Coronavirus (COVID-19) travel restrictions in Austria – updated 17 August 2021

Requirements for travel to Austria

Travelers who have exclusively been to the United States or another “country or territory with low epidemiological risk” (listed in Annex 1 of the COVID-19 Entry Regulation) in the past 10 days may enter Austria without quarantine or pre-travel-registration if they provide upon entry a certificate of vaccination, a certificate of recovery, or a negative COVID-19 test result (see below for specific requirements).

If none of those certificates or test results can be provided upon entry, the person seeking entry must take a COVID-19 test at their own expense immediately (max. 24 hours) after arrival. In this case travelers are required to register in advance using the pre-travel clearance form.

US citizens are strongly encouraged to take direct flights between the United States and Austria to avoid third-country restrictions.

Requirements for vaccination/recovery certificates or COVID-19 tests

Please note that only certificates and test results issued in English or German by a medical professional or public authority will be accepted.

Vaccination Certificate (e.g. “CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Card” or Medical Certificate):

Inoculation with BioNtech/Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson&Johnson/Janssen, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, or Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines.

Start of validity: at the day of full immunization = receipt of 2 doses of BioNtech/Pfizer, Moderna, Astra Zeneca, Sinopharm or Sinovac. The exception is Johnson & Johnson, which requires only one dose for full effect. Persons, who have only received the first dose of those vaccines will have to present either negative PCR or rapid/antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 with the sample taken no earlier than 72 hours (PCR) or 48 hours (rapid/antigen) prior to entering Austria.

End of validity: 270 days after the second/only inoculation

Certificate of Recovery (or Medical Certificate):

Confirmation of the patient’s recovery from COVID-19 in the past 180 days issued by a medical professional or public authority,

OR a positive test for COVID-19 antibodies not older than 90 days

COVID-19 Test Result (or Medical Certificate):

PCR or rapid/antigen test for SARS-CoV-2

Sample taken no earlier than 72 hours (PCR test) or 48 hours (rapid/antigen test) prior to entering Austria

Test results must include: full name and date of birth of the tested person; date and time of the sampling; test result; bar-/QR-code or stamp and signature of testing facility

Travelers who have been to an “area of variants of concern” (any country or territory listed in Annex 2) in the past 10 days are not allowed to enter Austria.

The entry ban does not apply for the following groups of persons or to the following travel purposes:

Austrian citizens, EU/EEA citizens, and Swiss citizens and all persons living in the same household

Persons with a residence in Austria, the EU/EEA, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican or Switzerland, and all persons living in the same household

Other exemptions can be found here

Any person who seeks to enter Austria claiming one of the above mentioned exceptions must:

complete the pre-travel registration form (no earlier than 72 hours before entry),

present upon entry a negative molecular-biological COVID-19 test (PCR test only, no rapid/antigen test) taken no earlier than 72 hours before the time of entry, AND

observe a 10-day home-quarantine at their residence or at an appropriate accommodation at their own cost. More info here.

Travelers arriving from countries of territories not listed in Annex 1 or Annex 2, or who have been in such a country/territory within the past 10 days before entering Austria, must

complete the pre-travel registration form (no earlier than 72 hours before entry),

present upon entry a certificate of vaccination/recovery (see requirements above), or a negative molecular-biological COVID-19 test (taken no earlier than 72 hours (PCR test) or 48 hours (rapid/antigen test) before entry),

AND must observe a mandatory 10-day quarantine at their residence or at an appropriate accommodation at their own cost. The residence/hotel may not be left for the quarantine period. Quarantine may be terminated upon presentation of a negative COVID-19 test taken no earlier than five days after entry.

Fully vaccinated (14 days after the last dose) persons are exempt from mandatory registration and quarantine. Some other exemptions apply.

Restrictions in Austria

There are a number of COVID-19 safety measures in place throughout Austria. Masks covering the mouth and nose are required on all public transportation. The provincial government of Tirol has re-introduced mask and crowd size restrictions due to spiking COVID cases, and mandatory testing for non-vaccinated persons when traveling out of high COVID areas. Violations of these measures are punishable by fines of 90 Euros per incident.

An EU entry ban is in effect for people from countries outside the European Union. This means they are not allowed to enter the EU or the Schengen area and therefore the Netherlands. There are exemptions to the entry ban. People arriving from certain countries who have been fully vaccinated can enter the Netherlands, for example.

All travelers aged 12 and over must self-quarantine for 10 days on arrival in the Netherlands after a stay in a very high-risk area. From 22 September onwards, travelers who are fully vaccinated do not have to quarantine. However, travelers from a very high-risk area must still provide a negative COVID-19 test. Travelers must be able to show proof of vaccination.

All travelers must complete a quarantine declaration form, even if you fall into an exemption category.

Travelers must show a negative COVID-19 test result if they are traveling to or returning to the Netherlands from outside the EU/Schengen or a COVID-19 risk area within the EU/Schengen. This requirement applies to everyone aged 12 or over. There are some exceptions. For example: people travelling within the EU who can show proof of vaccination or proof of recovery (a Digital COVID Certificate) do not have to show a negative COVID-19 test result.

This checklist offers more details regarding entry.

What to expect when visiting the Netherlands

Most businesses are open, subject to certain conditions. Some locations may require visitors to show a coronavirus entry pass. Get crime, scams and transport safety tips before you go.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Inspired by my Croatian heritage on my grandfather’s side, I first traveled to Croatia to study in 2015. I stepped off the plane in Dubrovnik not knowing anyone and only knowing a couple of basic Croatian phrases that my grandfather taught me. It wasn’t long before the hospitable, community-oriented culture welcomed me with open arms. This sense of safety in Croatia is one of the reasons I decided to make this country my permanent home.

Since 2017, I’ve been based in Dubrovnik while traveling throughout Croatia and beyond. As well as traveling alone, I’ve led group tours to nearly every corner of the country. From my collective experience of traveling throughout Europe, Asia, and the US, I can say that Croatia is the safest country I’ve visited.

However, there are some essential safety tips you should familiarize yourself with before planning a trip to Croatia.

Is Croatia a safe country?

Crime in Croatia

Emergency numbers

Scams in Croatia

Transport safety: getting around in Croatia

Outdoor safety tips

Earthquakes in Croatia

Nightlife safety in Croatia

Is Croatia safe for family travel?

Is Croatia safe for female travelers?

Is Croatia safe for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Is Croatia a safe country?

Don’t just take my word for it. Croatia ranked #15 out of 163 countries in the 2024 Global Peace Index and has a Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) travel advisory rating from the US State Department. So, yes – Croatia is considered very safe.

Crime in Croatia

The crime rate in Croatia is relatively low, and pickpocketing is less common compared to other European countries. However, travelers can be an easy target for petty theft in Croatia. Keep your belongings close to you and avoid carrying large sums of cash.

In January 2023, Croatia adopted the euro as its currency, replacing the kuna. Avoid carrying around more than US $250 (€240) at once.

Be mindful of your belongings in your accommodation and always keep your bags locked and your passport in a safe place. Try to avoid leaving money and valuables unattended while on the beach – always ask a friend or family member to watch your belongings while you go for a swim.

In a 2025 survey, Croatia was ranked the safest place for walking at night compared to 40 other European countries. Streets are generally well-lit and well-patrolled, especially in touristed areas. Still, it’s important to stay alert and avoid deserted or dimly lit areas.

Emergency numbers

112: General emergency number (toll-free)

192: Police

193: Fire department

194: Emergency medical help

195: Maritime search and rescue

1987: Help on the road

Scams in Croatia

There aren’t many major travel scams in Croatia, but a few tips can save you from getting ripped off.

Use official banks to exchange or take out money

There are many “Euronet” ATMs and foreign exchange booths throughout Croatia; however, you’ll get a better exchange rate and probably a lower fee if you take out money from an official bank or one of its ATMs.

Avoid being overcharged

Although it doesn’t happen often, there are cases when owners may overcharge tourists, even for a coffee or couple of drinks. It is required by law that all customers receive a receipt, and this is also a way to double-check you were not overcharged.

Ask the taxi to keep the meter on

Look out for taxi drivers overcharging you. You can avoid this by asking for a price to your destination before getting in the taxi and asking the driver to keep the meter on during the journey.

The Uber and Bolt ride-share apps are available in Croatia and give you a set price in advance of the journey.

Transport safety: getting around in Croatia

While Croatia’s slower train system isn’t the most convenient option, you can easily travel by road or boat.

Traveling safely by bus

The most affordable way to travel around mainland Croatia is by bus – the network is extensive and reliable. However, make sure you get back to the bus on time at rest stops, as Croatian buses are notorious for leaving tourists behind.

Traveling by car

To rent a car in Croatia you will need a valid driver’s license from your home country. If your license is not in the Latin (Roman) alphabet, you will also need an International Driving Permit. You’ll need a form of ID such as a passport, and a debit or credit card to make a security deposit.

Keep in mind, they drive on the right-hand side of the road in Croatia.

Though the road network in Croatia is well-maintained in most cases, roads can be narrow, sometimes along cliffs, and you have to look out for careless drivers who don’t follow the speed limit.

The police in Croatia may perform random drunk-driving checks. Croatia has a zero-tolerance attitude to drinking and driving if you are under 24, and the limit is 0.05% of alcohol if you are over 24.

Get more tips on driving in Croatia here.

Traveling by sea

Traveling by boat is a great way to explore Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast. You can visit any of the islands using public or private ferries. You can also hire a skippered yacht to sail through Croatia’s islands with a group of friends or rent a speed boat for the day.

You can skipper yourself if you have valid Navigational and VHF radio licenses and are over 18 years old. Keep in mind it’s illegal to consume alcohol while sailing, and penalties are stiff.

Split's Old Town as seen from the water. Image credit: Ellen Hall

Outdoor safety tips

Croatia is an ideal destination for adventure travelers. It is critical that travelers follow a few common-sense safety precautions while enjoying any adventure activities.

Cliff jumping

The Adriatic coast is filled with hidden coves ideal for cliff jumping, but in some areas, rocks are not visible from above, or loose gravel makes the cliffs unstable, and warning signs may not be in place. To avoid the potential for serious injury, avoid jumping off rocks and cliffs, even if you see others jumping. Never dive in headfirst or jump or dive off a bridge.

Sea urchins

Watch out for sea urchins (known as sea hedgehogs in Croatia). They are often found on rocks around shallow water. They don’t bite and are not a deadly threat; however, their spines can cause painful swelling, and can get stuck under your skin, similar to a large splinter. So, you’ll want to avoid stepping on them or trying to pick them up. Wearing water shoes or sandals is a good idea.

Hiking

There are many incredible hikes in Croatia. It’s best to hike with a guide or group of friends, as it’s easy to get lost when you are alone.

Always stay on the main path, as some remote areas in the mountains still have land mines, or unexploded bombs, leftover from the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s. It’s also important to stay on marked walking paths or boardwalks, such as at Plitvice Lakes, to avoid slippery cliffs and to preserve the park.

Excessive sun

Temperatures in Croatia can reach the mid-90s°F (mid 30s °C) in the summer, but it can feel even hotter because of the intense sun. Always wear sunscreen and be cautious of exposure to excessive heat and direct sun for long periods of time. Wear a hat, try to sit in the shade, and make sure you drink lots of water, especially when the sun is the strongest, from 10am to 3pm.

Earthquakes in Croatia

Croatia experiences a fair amount of seismic activity, especially near Zagreb and along the coast, and damaging earthquakes do sometimes occur. On December 29, 2020, a 6.4 magnitude quake struck near the town of Petrinja, about 30mi (48km) south of Zagreb. Widespread damage was reported along with at least five deaths. In March of 2020, Zagreb was struck by a 5.3 magnitude quake.

When traveling in earthquake-prone areas, plan ahead by carrying a small emergency kit and your important documents with you and identifying a safe evacuation point. During an earthquake, find a safe place indoors, away from windows, and ride it out. After the quake, head to your evacuation point, and get in touch with your emergency contacts. Be prepared for aftershocks, which are sometimes larger than the original quake.

Planning a trip to Croatia? Find out how travel insurance can cover adventure activities, lost or stolen baggage, sudden illness and more.

Nightlife safety in Croatia

Cafe bars are a big part of Croatian nightlife and are generally safe. However, you need to take precautions as you would elsewhere, such as never letting your drink out of sight, and going out in groups.

Split and Zagreb have the best nightlife options, as they are the biggest cities in Croatia. However, it’s best to avoid “gentlemen’s clubs”. Some of these venues are infamous for overcharging tourists for drinks or services and threatening those who refuse to pay.

It’s also best to avoid nightclubs, bars, and venues that draw in rowdy football fans, as fights often break out between opposing team supporters.

Is Croatia safe for family travel?

Croatia is a popular destination for families, but the country isn’t necessarily child-proof. Be mindful of watching your child on stairs without railings, beaches without lifeguards, and narrow sidewalks close to oncoming traffic. Also, note that many buildings and apartments do not have ramps or elevators, so call ahead and ask your accommodation provider if you plan on bringing a stroller.

Is Croatia safe for female travelers?

I’ve traveled a lot alone around Croatia and found it to be safe. However, women are not immune to cat-calling. Some men may persistently try to talk to you if they see you’re sitting alone. Just be polite but firm if you are not interested in talking to them. Accommodation in hostels, private apartment rentals, and hotels are all safe for solo travelers, provided you use normal common sense.

Is Croatia safe for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Yes, LGBTQ+ travelers can feel safe here. Same-sex marriage is legal in Croatia. And while most of the gay bars are in the capital of Zagreb, there are plenty of LGBTQ+ friendly places that welcome travelers every year throughout Croatia.

However, nearly 80% of the Croatian population is Catholic and in some of the smaller towns and villages you might find locals are more conservative.

Some people may stare if they see public displays of affection between same-sex couples.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Sebastian Condrea	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1188674829	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest national park in South-Eastern Europe and the largest national park in Croatia</imageCaption>

What are the issues affecting travelers to Albania?
A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck 21mi (34km) northwest of the capital, Tirana, on Tuesday 26 November, with a shallow depth of 12mi (19km). At least 18 people died, buildings were destroyed and people were trapped under rubble.

This is the strongest earthquake to hit Albania in 30 years and has been followed by aftershocks with magnitudes of between 5.1 and 5.4. Earthquakes are common in the Balkans, which is an active seismic region. Be prepared for disruptions to travel plans, and contact your travel provider to see if schedules have changed.

What to do if you're in an earthquake

Move to an open space away from hazards such as powerlines, buildings, trees and bridges

Move away from any falling objects, crouch on the ground and cover your head

Don't rush outside though – plenty of earthquake injuries happen when people fall while trying to run

If you can't get outside safely, get under strong furniture or against an internal wall. Bathtubs or spaces behind furniture aren't the safest places – hiding under a bed or strong table is a better option, which will protect you from falling objects

If you are in a wheelchair, stay away from any objects that could fall. Lock the wheels and cover your head with your arms

If you are trapped under rubble, avoid wasting your energy or stirring up dust. Only call for help when you hear people nearby

After the earthquake, get to your evacuation point. Try to get in touch with your embassy and emergency contact. Try not to waste your phone battery.

Before you buy a travel insurance policy, check your government travel warnings and health advice – there may be no travel insurance cover for locations with a government travel ban or health advice against travel.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Luis Dafos	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1133705286	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>High angle cityscape of Tirana downtown</imageCaption>

France is known for its spectacular alpine regions but it's not as simple as strapping on a snowboard. Our insider Felicity shares her advice on how to stay safe.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The sun is rising, prompting the peaks surrounding Mt Blanc to blush rose and amber. Aside from the crunch of snow underfoot and the ragged intake of breath while approaching the summit, there is silence. When you reach the summit, time stands still. But now, you must descend.

Trekking in France’s alpine areas is irresistible. But, these mountains require preparation, careful selection of alpine gear, adhering to safety rules, and often a mountain guide to make crucial decisions for you. Whether skiing, boarding, hiking (during summer or winter), here are a few tips to stay safe in the big hills.

Top Five Alpine Safety Rules

French Alpine Regions

Summer Hazards

Health Problems

Off Piste Safety

Avalanche Safety

Top Five Alpine Safety Rules

Forecast

Check the weather forecasts. The weather changes quickly and unpredictably in mountain areas; even on summer hiking routes, it’s been known to snow in the French Alps.

Equipment

Carry the correct equipment for alpine conditions, such as glacier glasses, shovels <g class="gr_ gr_186 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="186" data-gr-id="186">and</g> probes. Ensure this gear is operational, and you should learn how to use it all before leaving, from emergency beacons to GPS instruments.

A Contact Person

Notify someone of your trip plan; it doesn’t matter if it’s for a day trip or longer. Information should include the number of people in your group, your planned route, experience level, equipment, planned return date and a deadline for calling emergency services if <g class="gr_ gr_209 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="209" data-gr-id="209">contact</g> hasn’t been made.

Swift Action

Call for help as soon as it’s required; nightfall hampers rescue operations.

Don't Overestimate Yourself

Consider taking a mountain guide to <g class="gr_ gr_205 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="205" data-gr-id="205">manage</g> the balance of risk and fun especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. Do your research to make sure they’re an elite, internationally recognized UIAGM qualified guide (Union Internationale des Associations de Guides de Montagnes).

Till Kramann, Director of Global Mountain Guiding, who has been guiding climbers and skiers in the French region for 15 years, says, “People often get into trouble for underestimating the conditions and overestimating their own capabilities.” One of his top safety rules is to always keep some gas in the tank, you may need it.

French Alpine Regions

The French Alps, Massif Central <g class="gr_ gr_199 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="199" data-gr-id="199">and</g> Pyrenees are three mountain ranges with different levels of difficulty.

The Massif Central is the most gentle, with non-glaciated and rolling terrain keeping with its volcanic origins. The French Alps has dramatic, jagged mountain peaks. The Pyrenees are underrated and overlooked; they are slightly lower than the Alps but share the same spectacular scenery – without the crowds.

My pick? For summer hiking, the grassy hills of the Massif Central. When I’m seeking a local-flavored experience, head for the intimate villages of the Pyrenees. When I want the après as hard core as the slopes, I venture to the Alps.

Summer Hazards

Summer may look benign, but has its own set of peccadillos – the big one is weather which produces sudden, furious thunderstorms.

Glacier terrain also throws up unique summer hazards, including water under the snow, more morning ice when heat-softened cover freezes overnight, or big earth movements including rockfalls from receding permafrost.

Climbing on high alpine traverses involving glaciers requires early alpine starts – that’s a <g class="gr_ gr_189 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" id="189" data-gr-id="189">2am</g> wakeup call – to cross snow bridges and crevasses before the heat of the sun <g class="gr_ gr_188 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="188" data-gr-id="188">melts</g> the ice.

When ski touring, later starts work best to allow for quicker descents – you’ll be done and dusted before the snow destabilizes.

Lescun Circle, France. Photo credit: GettyImages - Romain Brengues-500px

Health Problems

Altitude sickness, dehydration <g class="gr_ gr_201 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="201" data-gr-id="201">and</g> cold-induced injuries cause the bulk of health issues in the mountains.

Altitude sickness can hit as low as 8202ft (2,500m) and presents symptoms such as fatigue, headaches <g class="gr_ gr_187 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="187" data-gr-id="187">and</g> nausea – which can progress to fluid on the lungs or brain.

The higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at altitude can be helped by drinking an extra liter of water than your normal intake. On top of drinking water regularly, consider adding electrolyte supplements or some other form of carbohydrate.

To protect and reduce frostbite, wear clothes that wick the moisture from your skin, pack layers to trap warm air, wear mittens instead of gloves, and always have waterproof gear at the ready. If you’re caught out and get frostbite, act quickly – wrap your body (in a space blanket, for example), seek shelter and attempt to warm the affected area gradually.

Off Piste Safety

The big word when discussing off-piste is avalanches, and they don’t have to be big to be nasty. Before you go, be aware of the nuances in each region.

For example, the Pyrenees snowpack is more stable than the French Alps. Perched by the Mediterranean, the snow is moister and forms in layers. These layers will freeze together to form solid blocks.

Problems occur with weak layers, a layer that hasn’t compounded. As Kramann explains, “In the Alps, when it’s dry above a certain height and temperature, you may get avalanche conditions that can remain for half a year. Weak layers only exist because of dry snow. That doesn’t happen so much in the Pyrenees, the snow combines way better – it’s fantastic for off-piste skiing and spring touring.”

Avalanche Safety

Are you in an avalanche area? Test the snow pack, have basic knowledge including pitch and direction of slopes and being able to interpret an avalanche forecast.

If you get caught in an avalanche – attempt to ski or ride out to the side, sometimes you can still maneuver on the moving surface.

If caught, try to stay on the surface by floating as much body area on the snow as possible. Don’t attempt to stand, putting your feet down might get you stuck in the heavy under-snow.

Snow will solidify <g class="gr_ gr_195 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="195" data-gr-id="195">fast,</g> if you are buried before it sets. Try to create a small pocket of air in front of your mouth.

Check your ego and ambitions. <g class="gr_ gr_168 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="168" data-gr-id="168">Kramann</g> cautions even when signs look good, to listen to your intuition. “We were the first out of the hut and I didn’t like the look of a slope on a summit approach”, he recounts. “So, I turned the clients around and they weren’t happy. Especially when the group behind us continued on. We were the last to see them alive, they were seven victims of an avalanche 30 minutes later.”

Safety first, every time, even when it‘s not convenient.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Onfokus	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

From Tenerife to Ibiza, here's how to survive the sun, surf and superclubs of the Spanish islands with World Nomads.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Be sun smart

Beach safety in Spain

Beachside petty crime in Spain

Tips for clubbing in Spain

Clubbing safely in Spain

Staying safe at night in Spain

Driving safely in the Canary Islands

Potential wildfire danger in the Spanish Islands

Be sun smart

The biggest factor here is heat. Both the Balearics and the Canaries can get baking hot in the height of summer. Sunscreen, a hat and some common sense can save you a lot of pain down the track.

Bad sunburn can be uncomfortable and inconvenien,t but sunstroke will leave you laid out for days. Prolonged exposure to the sun can overwhelm your body's cooling mechanisms, resulting in headache, dizziness, weakness or fainting. In severe cases, sunstroke can cause organ failures, brain damage or even death.

Dehydration is one of the biggest contributing factors in sunstroke or heatstroke cases. It's important to keep up your fluid intake but sucking down cold cocktails isn't the way to go about it. Alcohol is a diuretic, so you'll end up actually losing water through excessive urination. So, if you are enjoying the beachside bars, make sure you have plenty of water between drinks.

If you're recovering from a big night out, you may already be dehydrated, so energy drinks and coffee are a bad idea, even if they make you feel better in the short term. A sports drink or some ice cold water is your best bet.

Young children are particularly susceptible to sunstroke so if you're travelling with kids, be vigilant and make sure they drink plenty of water. Sugar and sodium are actually effective in preventing or treating sunstroke, so you can fill them up with juice or soft drinks without feeling guilty.

Strenuous activity can contribute to sunstroke so make sure children are kept out of the sun in the hottests times of the day – do what the Spanish do and take a siesta (afternoon sleep).

Symptoms of heatstroke to watch for are:

headache

flushed then pale skin

shallow, rapid breathing

slurred or incoherent speech.

Treatment for sunstroke relies on rapidly dropping body temperature, and can include anything from drinking cold drinks to ice baths, depending on the severity of symptoms. In all cases. get the sufferer into a cool shady spot, remove any restrictive clothing and seek medical attention.

Beach safety in Spain

Be careful when swimming at the beach – the surf at Balearic beaches might be flat but there are dangerous currents. The Canary Islands' are the Atlantic Ocean and can get some very powerful surf. Many of the bigger beaches will have blue flags, to indicate the safe areas to swim, or red flags, which mean you mustn't enter the water.

If you're swimming at one of the smaller unguarded beaches either don't venture out too far and stay out of the water if conditions seem dangerous.

Beachside petty crime in Spain

The resorts centred around the most popular beaches are also the focus of pickpockets and petty thieves. Unattended items at the beach will quickly disappear, so even while you're relaxing kepp an eye on your belongings.

Stuffing your wallet down the bottom of your shoe isn't as clever as you might think, with thieves often making footwear their first priority. The best bet is to take only the basics to the beach and leave valuables, especially your passport, under lock and key in your accommodation. If you have a camera, phone or an iPod with you, makre sure someone watches it for you when you go for a dip.

Loose fitting summer clothing and huge beach bags are a blessing for pickpockets. With plenty of room for error, even fumbling thieves can get their fingers on your stuff. For this reason it's especially important to be on your guard when visiting sightseeing hotspots, crowded beaches or busy markets.

Any strangers who approach you out of the blue should be treated with suspicion. They could be trying to distract you while they delve into your pockets. Women offering flowers or rosemary sprigs "for luck" are prime examples of this tactic and should be avoided, ignored or firmly dismissed.

Tips for clubbing in Spain

Ibiza is known for its giant clubs, which boast some of the world's top DJs as residents. However, all this prestige comes with a price tag, and tickets to some of the bigger parties can hit your pocket pretty hard. Don't be tempted by scalpers offering cheap tickets on the street, they'll often turn out to be fake.

You can get tickets from almost any shop or bar on the island but it's safest to source them from the bigger venues. You can sometimes avoid long queues by purchasing tickets online, which means you're added to a guest list and can slip through a special entrance. During the giant opening parties in May and June or the closing parties in September, these guest lists are likely to be just as full as the main entrances.

There's no real dress code at most of the clubs, although after forking out for a ticket you don't want to push your luck too far. For those of you with friends in high places, you won't be able to get into VIP areas while wearing shorts.

If you dress snappily enough and hang onto someone with a record bag you may be able to slip in for free, although you shouldn't count on it.

Clubbing safely in Spain

The Balearic Islands are alternatively known for their intense nightlife or chilled-out recovery culture. Either way, indulgence and hedonism are the orders of the day. Unfortunately, some people take it too far and burn themselves out or get burned.

Bartenders here tend to be very generous when pouring drinks, so it can be difficult to keep track of your alcohol intake. The exorbitant drinks prices in the superclubs of Ibiza and Mallorca are probably enough to make you think twice about that next cocktail, but in bars and restaurants, it's a different story. Promoters will offer you full trays of drinks for almost nothing in order to entice you into their establishment. Be aware that it's easy to get caught up in this excitement and overdo it. No matter how careful and sensible you normally are, it's difficult to make good decisions with a jug of sangria under your belt.

The popularity of these islands as party hotspots means there will be plenty of other rowdy travelers around, some of them looking for trouble after a long night. Try and avoid big, noisy groups of revellers, especially outside bars or clubs, and don't get sucked in by provocative or aggressive behaviour. Big drug cultures on both Ibiza and Mallorca mean you can't always predict how someone is going to react. The riskiest time is when the clubs close and everybody's flooding into the streets. Don't linger for too long.

Staying safe at night in Spain

By the time you head for home, you probably won't be too concerned about how you get there, as long as there's a bed waiting for you. Often the sun will be coming up by the time the clubs close, so walking might seem like a safe option. If you're close to your accommodation this should be fine, although as usual you should stick to well-lit main streets and avoid dark alleys.

There are a lot of prostitutes on the streets of San Antonio who can be very insistent. Make sure they don't get their hands on your wallet while they grab at you, but don't be too aggressive when getting rid of them. They often have large friends watching from the shadows.

For long trips home, make sure you get a cab or a bus. Ibiza's superclubs are scattered all over the island and while there are "disco bus" services running between them and all the major resorts, you could find yourself fighting the crowds as thousands of your fellow clubbers pour onto the street.

Taxis are quite cheap and reliable on all of the islands, especially if you're in a group. There are often set prices between certain points on the islands so it's a good idea to get a price, or at least an estimate before setting off.

Girls should be wary if heading home by themselves, and should avoid the unlicensed, illegal cabs that scour the islands.

Driving safely in the Canary Islands

Despite the high-season crowds, there are plenty of unspoilt beaches and coves to be found on all of Spain's islands. Hire a car or scooter to head out on your own.

Aside from the main highways, the islands' roads are often narrow, windy and unlit, so drive carefully. If you're on a scooter, helmets are mandatory and should be provided by the hire company. Make sure you are insured and licenced to ride a scooter. Police are vigilant and there are heavy, on-the-spot fines for offenders.

Spanish law is very strict on drink driving, and the unpredictable pouring in Spanish bars means it's easy to accidentally find yourself over the 0.05 per cent BAC limit. Don't drink if you're driving.

If you're parking your car in a populated area, don't leave valuables inside to tempt thieves. On Tenerife especially, thieves are known to stake out isolated miradors or lookouts and wait for careless tourists. Anything left in the car you're likely to lose, and there are also reports of entire cars being boosted to be quickly shipped over to Africa.

Potential wildfire danger in the Spanish Islands

The hot, dry climate of the Canary Islands means there is a danger of forest fires. Devastating blazes swept across the Islands in 2007 and 2009, forcing thousands of residents and holidaymakers to evacuate. La Palma, the least developed and most wooded of the islands, is particularly susceptible.

Ibiza also has a history of wildfires, with big blazes in 2010 and 2011 leading to the precautionary evacuation of hundreds of tourists. The fires are more common in the sparsely populated north of the island, so if you plan on exploring, make sure to look at weather reports and take note of any warnings.

Even if the flames don't directly threaten tourist areas, smoke plumes can cause flight delays and greatly disrupt your holiday.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

What are the important issues affecting travelers visiting Spain?

Protests in Barcelona, October 2019: What travelers need to know

Travelers should be aware of protests in Barcelona that have become violent. Protestors took to the streets after the sentencing of nine Catalan separatist leaders who were prosecuted for sedition over the banned independence referendum in October 2017. The leaders have been handed lengthy 13-year prison sentences, which has outraged their supporters.

The protests have become less violent in Barcelona since Friday 18 October which saw masked youths set fire to rubbish bins, throwing rocks and bottles at security forces.

Travelers should stay up to date with local news reports and media, and avoid any large crowds of protestors.

More than 50 people are feared dead and more than 150 injured as several wildfires rage out of control in Greece. Fire crews are battling blazes in the following locations: northeast of Athens in the Penteli region, Rafina region and the coastal seaside towns of Mati and Kineta. Greece is currently experiencing heatwave conditions with temperatures exceeding 104°F (40°C), and the fires are being fanned by high winds.

The Athens-Corinth motorway has been closed by authorities. The motorway is one of two major routes to the Peloponnese peninsula. Train and other transport services in affected areas have been canceled.

A state of emergency has been declared, and the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, has cut short a trip to Bosnia to return home. Spain and Cyprus have offered firefighting assistance.

Travelers in Greece should heed government warnings and keep up to date with local news and alerts. Those with respiratory health issues should travel away from affected areas and avoid breathing in the smoke where possible.

Also, check with your insurer as cover for this event may be excluded from a certain date.

Venice has recorded 6.1ft (1.87m) of water following days of heavy rain. These are the highest recorded water levels since 1966 when a whopping 6.3ft (1.94m) was recorded. The floods have caused millions of euros worth of damage, specifically to St Marks Basilica which has only been flooded six times in 900 years.

If you are traveling to Venice soon, stay up to date with local news and be aware bad weather is forecast for the coming days.

How to survive a flood

Do your research to know where to go if an emergency hits – take a quick look at the geography surrounding where you are staying. Where is high ground? Where will the water come in to create a bottleneck?

Keep up to date with news regarding the area you are staying in. Check websites, talk to locals, and pay attention to radio or TV. Staying aware of what is going on is important, even if it is for a few minutes a day.

If a flood hits and you are inside:

Firstly, it is vital that you keep aware of, and pay heed to, any evacuation notices delivered by emergency services. If you are told to leave, leave.

While there may be some situations that require evacuation, not everyone needs to leave their spot in the event of a flood, especially two-story hotels or apartments that end up simply water-logged downstairs. Although in apartment blocks, a word of caution – if the bottom levels become filled you could be marooned for days if your elevator system malfunctions.

If water creeps inside your accommodation, be very careful with electrical appliances. The safest idea is to switch off as many as you can – and obviously, don’t use your devices if you are standing in water.

If you are stuck inside and need to raise an alarm, hang a white sheet outside your window or on your roof so emergency services can spot you.

If you need to leave your accommodation

If circumstances reach a point where it is essential to leave where you are staying, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

Wear study clothes, and strong shoes - the more water-resistant the better

Take enough supplies that will last you for a few days, but leave behind any large pieces of luggage. If you get caught in a wave, you don’t want to have cumbersome gear weighing you down. Clothes can be replaced. You can’t

Under no circumstances should you EVER drive through floodwaters. Engineering experts say that a human body in a stream of water is far safer, physics wise, than a car. Cars are filled with air, which makes them a bouncing, bobbing death machine

Don’t swim or wade through floodwaters, even a slow-moving current is enough to knock you over, and the currents of floodwaters are extremely unpredictable. Floodwaters also contain debris traps – branches, pieces of metal, sewage, animals.

The best idea is to find the highest and most visible ground you possibly can, and stay put. You might get bored in the same place and want to move elsewhere, but if you have found the highest ground you possibly can, it’s the best you can do in a devastating flood.

Forest fires in Pisa - September 2018

Forest fires in Pisa - September 2018

A major wildfire burning in the forest area in central Tuscany region currently remains out of control, with authorities evacuating affected towns and surrounding areas.

Italian authorities have advised that for safety reasons, travel to the affected areas is to be avoided. Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport (one of Italy's busiest) is currently closed, affecting thousands of passengers.

Check with your airline for further information regarding flights.

If you are traveling in the area, it's important that you listen to and follow all instructions from local authorities such as Italian Police and emergency services personnel. Failure to do so can result in you not being covered by travel insurance.

Tuscany Floods - September 2017

A storm that brought heavy rain to Tuscany and Rome has claimed several lives.

The Tuscan city of Livorno was worst hit, with 4 people killed and many homes and buildings inundated with water and mud. The rain was so intense in Rome that several subway stations were forced to close.

Visitors to the areas are advised that clean-up operations are continuing and disruption to transport and other services may last several days.

A truck plowed into a crowded Christmas market in Breitscheidplatz, in the German capital Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 56 others. The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Force has tweeted that the terror group ISIS was taking credit for the incident.

Munich terror attack - July 22nd 2016

At least nine people are dead and a dozen wounded in what Munich police are describing as a suspected terrorist attack and a "shooting rampage" near the Olympia Shopping Center in the Moosach district.

As of this writing, no suspects are in custody - it's been reported there were possibly three attackers - and a massive manhunt is underway. A state of emergency has been declared and authorities are urging residents to not leave their homes. Train and bus service has been suspended and Munich's mainline railway station has been closed.

This is the second suspected terror attack in the Bavaria region this week. On Monday an axe and knife-wielding teenager injured a number of people on a train. He was eventually shot and killed by police.

Am I covered for a terrorist attack?

If you are injured in a terrorist attack your medical costs and medical evacuation (if required) are covered by your policy.

Access to the benefits of cancellation and trip interruption depends on your country of residence, so check out the information here. If you are a World Nomads policyholder check the wording on your policy. If you are not a World Nomads policyholder the policy wording is accessible after you get a quote (no obligation to purchase), but remember, you will not be covered for this incident if you purchase the policy after it has occurred, but you'll be covered for future unrelated events.

Anyone, policyholder or not, is welcome to call the customer assistance teams and discuss coverage.

In the meantime, World Nomads is urging travelers to retain perspective on terror events, and understand that the chance of being a victim is extremely small. In fact, you are statistically four times more likely to be hit by lightning.

Don't confuse the possibility of a terror attack with the probability of being involved in one.

Remember there are psychological reasons why you may feel uncertain about travel; we're more afraid of events that are gruesome, unpredictable and unfamiliar. We feel less fear about everyday dangers such as heart attack, auto accidents or skin cancer - all of which are much more likely to kill you.

However, there are actions you can take to further lessen the likelihood you will become a victim. These include carefully considering the security around large-scale, easily accessible, public events. If at all possible get yourself inside a secure area at any event. This may mean a ticketed event, or a secure area set up by organizers. Inside such an area, like being behind the security checkpoint at an airport, is the safest option.

Alternatively, if you stay in a publicly accessible area, stay away from the heaviest concentration of crowds, keep to the fringes where the sheer number of people presents less of a target and there is the option of making a quick escape if trouble should occur.

Need assistance? Find the emergency contact telephone number for you.

So we can best assist you, please be ready with the following:

Your policy number

A contact number for where you are now

The nature of your problem

If you are ill or injured we will need details of medical consultations you have had

Historically, Belgium has been generally free of terrorism attacks, however since 2014 the country has been subjected to spontaneous attacks by extremist Islamists who align themselves with Daesh (ISIL). Several foreign governments warn travelers to exercise caution when traveling in Belgium.

In 2015, the Belgian Government has issued a Level 3 security warning across the entire country, which indicates a serious threat of terrorism exists. Many foreign governments have suggested travelers keep a heightened level of vigilance in public places while traveling around major locations in Belgium, especially around shopping centers, transport hubs, airports and during major events. It's also a good idea to listen to any announcements issued by Belgian authorities.

Security has also been increased at border crossings, transport hubs and airports.

Please check your government's advice for travel to Belgium before departure. We care about your personal safety and wellbeing, and it's important you adhere to all government issued travel warnings.

March 2016: Terrorists launch attacks on the Brussels National Airport and Maalbeek Metro Station in central Brussels. The bombings kill 32 people and injured more than 300. The incidents caused air and train services in and out of Brussels to be cancelled

August 2015: Three people were injured in a terrorism attack onboard a Brussels to Paris train in Northern France

May 2014: Four people were killed in a shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels by a terrorist.
