I’ve been making trips to the region with my family, on solo adventures, and with friends for most of my life. BC was close enough for a road trip (or a ferry ride to Vancouver Island) and yet far enough away that it still held the intrigue of a foreign adventure—and all the magic that makes the Pacific Northwest so special.

One place I kept coming back to was Whistler. Sitting at the base of Whisler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountains, it earns a gold star for Pacific Northwest scenery and is an adventure hub all year long.

I long-associated Whistler with winter adventures: snowy mountains, skiing, and snowboarding. Once the snow melts away, though, Whistler transforms into an entirely different place in late spring and summer. Alpine lakes, sun-soaked meadows, shadowy old-growth forests, and glacial rivers cutting through mountains keep any nature-loving, active traveler on their toes. And for those who prefer a more laidback adventure, Whistler’s summertime charm is filled with relaxed walks and views aplenty.

About an hour-and-a-half-to-two-hour scenic drive from Vancouver, Whistler is an easy escape for a long weekend trip in beautiful British Columbia. As you wind along the coast, you’ll be sandwiched between Howe Sound and soaring mountains, teasing for what it is to come.

Hiking, backpacking, and camping

Tucked among the Coast Mountains, Whistler’s backyard is a playground for hiking and backpacking. Dozens of miles of trails wind through shady forests, colorful fields of wildflowers, past icy blue lakes and tumbling waterfalls, and looking out towards snow-dusted mountain tops. Many of the trails are on the longer side and require a bit of a climb—but the pristine wilderness is a high payoff for the effort.

Many of Whistler’s trails can be accessed by taking the Whistler Village Gondola or the Blackcomb Gondola. Some of Whistler’s most scenic summer hikes include:

Joffre Lakes

High Note Trail

Panorama Ridge

Garibaldi Lake

Ancient Cedars Trail

If you wish to linger a bit longer in the great outdoors, turn the hike into a backpack and camp under the stars for the night. Campsites are available along many of the trails, such as Russet Lake reachable by High Note, as well as Singing Pass and Musical Bumps. Reservations are required for backcountry camping sites. Whistler has plenty of drive-up camping options as well, including Riverside Campground in Fitzsimmons Creek and Whistler Olympic Park Campground in Callaghan Valley.

Mountain biking and leisurely cycling

If you prefer to adventure on two wheels, Whistler is notorious for its mountain biking. Whistler Mountain Bike Park is world-famous for its steep descents through scenic forests. With over 50 miles of bike trails, there are plenty of adrenaline-pumping double backs that require expertise as well as plenty of easier paths. Newer bikers can book mountain biking lessons to brush up on skills before barreling down the hills.

Alternatively, opt for a lower intensity bike ride outside of the park. Gravel and road bikes are available for rental across town—and there is plenty to explore by bike. Whether you’re peddling through the village or choosing a lengthier ride along the Whistler Valley or Sea to Sky Trails, the region has many options for cycling—all that come with some epic views.

Whistler by water

Whistler’s mountainous terrain may steal the spotlight, but the area is surrounded by lakes and rivers, as well. Take a dip in an icy glacial or alpine lake after a long hike. Trust me, it’s incredibly refreshing after you heat up during your hike. Take a deep breath, jump in, and feel the rush when the cold water hits you.

You can also spend a day dedicated to water sports and explore Whistler’s surroundings by water. Chekamus River is ideal for family-friendly rafting, with class 1 and 2 rapids. Float gently downstream while taking in the towering trees of Paradise Valley. For more adrenaline, book a white-water rafting adventure on Green River. Bounce through class 2 and 3 rapids with views of snowy mountains along the way.

Experience Whistler by water at a slower pace by paddling along its rivers and lakes. A popular spot is the River of Golden Dreams, which is a 5km waterway that can be traversed by canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Along the way, you will pass old growth forest, mountains, wetlands and perhaps even some wildlife. Look out for black bears, eagles, beavers, and more.

Whistler also has plenty of sandy lakeside beaches, where you can swim, play beach volleyball, rent kayaks and paddleboards. Put spots like Wayside Park, Lost Lake, Rainbow Park, and Nita Lake on your list for a beach or lake day, as relaxed or active as you want to make it.

Relaxed adventures

If you’re after Whistler’s views but aren’t up for the more physically challenging adventures, there are plenty of ways to still enjoy it. While not as bustling as it is during winter months, Whistler Village is filled with shops, restaurants, and wine bars for a day of wandering and eating. Grab lunch or dinner on a patio and enjoy the views and late sunsets. Take a walk through Florence Petersen Park, browse the farmer’s market, or catch live music at the Whistler Olympic Plaza, where free concerts are held all summer long.

Other ideas for ways to stay busy in Whistler include:

Visit the Olympic Rings

Take a gondola ride to the top of Blackcomb

Zipline among the trees

Go horseback riding through the mountains

Swim, beach, picnic, and relax at Alta Lake

Take a sea plane ride over glaciers

Getting There

The easiest way to reach Whistler is to fly into Vancouver and then drive the rest of the way. In just under two hours by car, you will have left the city behind and be surrounded by some of the very best of the Pacific Northwest. The drive is spectacular and is part of the fun of reaching Whistler.

Seattle and Bellingham are also relatively accessible to Whistler, though involve an international border crossing. The drive is about four hours from Seattle and two-and-a-half hours from Bellingham, traffic dependent, and not including border crossing time.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / Xin Min / 500px	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

With last May's horrific instance of violence still on people's minds, it's fair for travelers to wonder whether camping in Mexico is a good idea. Former drug war correspondent Joe Furey shares his tips on places to avoid, and camping spots he still recommends.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Travelers to Mexico were shocked by the news of three surfers (two Australians and one American) being found, killed and their bodies dumped, in Ensenada, Baja California, in May 2024. They were shot after refusing to surrender their truck to thieves thought to have a connection to organized crime.

Understandably, this has raised specific concerns about the security of surf spots along the Pacific coast of Mexico and the safety of campers generally. I have toured most of Mexico in a variety of vehicles, and I have always camped where there has been wilderness to explore. So, it’s with this in mind that I have researched the state of camping in Mexico right now.

Is it safe to camp in Mexico?

What about free camping?

General safety tips for camping in Mexico

Best places to camp in Mexico

Is it safe to camp in Mexico?

We all know there is danger, but it’s not spread evenly throughout the country. Cartel violence bedevils a lot of states. The worst affected, from a tourist perspective, are those whose territory – from supply lines to manufacturing centres – is being contested in headline-grabbing fashion. These are states at war, effectively.

However, cartel-run states, like Sinaloa, where the war has been won within its own boundaries, at least for now, are relatively stable. The better organized the crime, the more diversified the ruling cartel’s business interests, and some cartels have invested heavily in tourism. They would rather not throw a cash cow on the barbecue.

As of now, I wouldn’t support camping in Jalisco, where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is rapidly expanding; Michoacán, due to frequent clashes between La Familia Michoacana and CJNG; Zacatecas and southern Guanajuato, which the CJNG has moved in on; Chihuahua, where the Juárez Cartel is still fighting for control of one Mexico’s most lucrative smuggling corridors (the Copper Canyon is safer, yet still precarious); and Tamaulipas, which the Gulf and Northeast Cartels have turned into a shooting gallery.

If you want to check for yourself where turf wars are being fought to ugly outcomes, Brilliant Maps and the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ Mexico Travel Advisory are valuable resources.

If you don’t keep track of the news, and cartel movements aren’t a professional consideration to you, as they are to me, you can judge the safety of an area by the number of campers using it. Though strict security protocols – fenced perimeters, 24-hour surveillance – may suggest a fortress to keep out invaders, they are standard nowadays. Such campgrounds are usually privately run, and their services and amenities excellent, but they don’t come cheap and they tend to be crowded.

In more rural areas, the protocols are relaxed, the amenities basic and the sites less thronged, though many are in tourist areas of great natural beauty. They are typically run by small communities – ejidos – and, as they are a major source of income, protected as best as the community can manage.

What about free camping?

It is strictly unrecommended, unless you’ve asked a local – preferably one who’s known to you – for advice, or a landowner for permission. As part of your preparations for travel, join an online camping community for tips and to befriend people on the ground. The main issue with free camping is your exposure to opportunist thieves and the possibility of trespassing on private land. You do not want to cap off your adventures with a hunting rifle in your face.

The other issue is isolation. Scenic often means remote, so should an accident befall you – a fall, some vehicular trouble, a snake bite – you may not have cellular coverage and then not happen across another human being for days. If you must free camp, seek out those places where it’s popular, such as Yucatan, Campeche, Hidalgo, Nayarit, and Baja California Sur, but be aware that you’d be one of many presumably wealthier-than-the-average-Mexican tourists, and not getting robbed is a numbers game.

Statistically speaking, Sierra Gorda biosphere reserve is one of the safest places to camp in Mexico. Image credit: Getty Images / ferrantraite

General safety tips for camping in Mexico

Prepare to camp under any conditions. Assuming you’ve done your research and got all the necessary permissions, remember that Mexican weather can be unpredictable, and camp with this in mind – tropical storms and shifting topography can throw surprises at the most seasoned of campers.

Don’t travel when you might be the only car on the road – early in the morning or late at night.

Keep your emergency/first-aid kit portably light so you’re not tempted to leave it in your vehicle if you intend to go hiking – that’s when you’ll need it most.

Keep your travel documents in a safe, dry place.

Adhere to local regulations and respect local customs.

Best places to camp in Mexico

Having pointed out the dangers at length, let us end this article on a happy note. Or series of notes. There are plenty of camping destinations that are settled (I prefer that word to “safe”), have space for RVs and campers and a lot to recommend them besides.

Bahía Concepción, in Baja California Sur, has warm welcomes, sandy coves, the blue-green waters of the Sea of Cortez, little or no surrounding development, and you can even snorkel with whale sharks there – and don’t worry, they feed on plankton, not tourists.

Valle de Bravo, a pueblo mágico in the State of Mexico, set among thickly wooded, mist-cloaked hills, is almost impossibly charming; and there’s splendid camping to be had there, by its lake. A favorite with the capital’s well-heeled, Valle, as it’s known locally, has a range of campsites to meet most budgets, and their safety is all but assured. While away your time boating, paragliding, and horseback riding.

Now, you can’t camp within the strikingly beautiful Sumidero Canyon National Park, in Chiapas, which is home to the endangered spider monkey, jaguarundi, ocelot, lowland paca, and river crocodile, but you can bed down at Chiapa de Corzo, where you can book tours of the canyon, which is well patrolled by park rangers.

Spectacular Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas. Image credit: Ellen Hall

If we’re going down the wholly statistical route, Yucatan, Campeche, and Tlaxcala are also among Mexico’s safest states, as is Querétaro, whose Sierra Gorda biosphere reserve is simply begging to be camped, though it has serious competition in the waterfalls, rivers, and caves of La Huasteca Potosina, a diamond of many carats in the crown of San Luis Potosí.

<imageAttribution>John Elk	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>148747569	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A beach campground in Bahía Concepción, Baja California Sur, Mexico.</imageCaption>

This busy city on the border of Mexico and the US has a reputation for violent crime, but just how dangerous it? Joe Furey offers a balanced view of the risks, along with his tips for avoiding trouble.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Tijuana is Mexico’s sixth biggest city and, according to the country’s 2020 census, its fastest growing. But to describe it in a strictly Mexican context is to misrepresent it.

With San Diego, it’s part of a transnational metropolitan region with a population of around five million – and the border between these two international sister cities is the busiest land crossing in the world. But despite its often negative border-town reputation as a “city of migrants”, Tijuana has carved out a new identity as a serious foodie destination, and its reputation for gourmet food, drawing on culinary influences from across the Americas, has fostered a general creative buzz, inspiring a generation of artists, photographers, ceramicists, writers and filmmakers to stay in their city, and a great many creatives from the US to move there.

Tijuana often makes the news for the wrong reasons and is the subject of countless scare stories, so as a former drug war correspondent, I hope to disentangle fact from fiction and offer a balanced view of a city I love and am happy to recommend to visitors who are smart enough to take advice.

Violent crime in Tijuana

Drugs and drug cartels

Common scams

Transport

Corruption in Tijuana

LBGTQ+ traveler safety

Crossing the border from the US

Violent crime in Tijuana

Tijuana closed out 2022 with approximately 2,000 murders. Though the figures are frightening, as the writer Mark Twain put it, there are “lies, damned lies, and statistics”. A closer, detailed look at the stats reveals not a city in a state of siege by organized crime, but, particularly in the east, a number of poor neighborhoods in the vise-grip of drugs: their sale, their consumption and their gang rivalries. Accept no invitations to house parties in Sánchez Taboada, Reforma, Camino Verde, and, farther out, Mariano Matamoros.

The rule is, if you’re looking for trouble in Tijuana, it will find you first, and a beefed-up police presence, as you’ll encounter in Zonas Centro (the main tourist area) and Norte, is no insurance against events taking a turn for the worse. Zona Norte, Tijuana’s red-light district, is a case in point. Prostitution is legal in this “zone of tolerance” but be aware that brothels often pose as strip or hostess clubs, and that the paraditas (“standing girls”) advertising their services in Callejon Coahuila generally have muscle lying in wait. For those taking insufficient precautions, drink-spiking, sexual assault, robbery with menaces, muggings, and kidnappings (usually of people spending with obvious abandon) are not uncommon. However, a sense of proportion obliges me to say that that would be true of any city with a relaxed attitude to vice.

US travel advisories have recently warned against traveling to Tijuana – and they have had their own motives for doing so (keeping tourism in-country, for one).

A street in the red light district in central Tijuana. Image credit: Getty Images / Photo Beto

Drugs and drug cartels

While much of the violence in Tijuana in the past 20 years was down to a turf war between drug cartels trying to secure one of the most lucrative cocaine smuggling corridors into the United States, the violence of late has been more localized, as street gangs vie for control of depressed neighborhood blocks to sell crystal meth and heroin to residents. This activity is easier for tourists to avoid, but the desperate have a habit of showing up where they’re not wanted. Having said that, in all the considerable time I’ve spent with friends in Tijuana’s tourist-friendly areas – Zonas Rio, Cacho, and the well-lit parts of Centro, green Chapultepec, and Playas de Tijuana – I’ve not witnessed a single incident that would make someone so much as stroll for cover.

At night, if in doubt, stick to well-lit streets, and if you’re going somewhere unfamiliar, jot a map of it on a piece of paper – not everyone who consults their phone on the street gets it stolen, but it’s a safe bet that those who have had their phone stolen on the street were using it and looking lost.

Common scams

If you’re on foot, don’t walk from the border to downtown Tijuana after dark. The shadows hold their share of drunks, addicts, beggars, and chancers (in the mistaken belief that Americans will have brought all the money they might need over the border). Plus, a colectivo (local shared minibus) costs practically nothing, you’ll have company, and you won’t be overcharged (which is more likely in a yellow cab than in a white Taxi Libre, but either way you should insist that your driver uses the meter).

Don’t engage with strangers in the street, however hard their luck sounds. Just think – why would a Tijuanan ask you, a foreigner without any local knowledge, to help them? People claiming to be lost or to have been robbed or raped, are rarely telling the truth or operating alone (pickpockets tend to be double acts). Look for groups of other visitors, and wave to them as though they’re family, whether they see you or not – con artists don’t like to be outnumbered.

Carry your cards and cash in a money belt, and keep a decoy wallet handy in case of muggings. A few dollars and some dead cards will be enough to satisfy a thief, who won’t hang around to check the viability of the cards.

Transport

Taxi drivers in Tijuana aren’t averse to scamming, so Uber might be your best bet for a haggle- and hassle-free ride. Also, when taxis are held up – rare but not unheard of – their drivers are often in on it, so if you do take one, don’t hail it from the street.

Another good option is to use your own vehicle. One of the great advantages of driving into Tijuana is that the entire Baja California peninsula is included in the Mexican Free Zone, meaning you don’t have to stump up for a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit and you can drive unimpeded from the city all the way down to Cabo San Luis in Baja California Sur. Do take out Mexican car insurance, though.

Corruption in Tijuana

The one obstacle to my free-thinking about driving around the Baja is police corruption, which at the municipal and state level, while greatly improved since the bad old days of Felipe Calderón’s presidency, still poses a concern. As reliable figures are hard to come by much of the “evidence” is anecdotal, but I know a couple who were stopped by uniformed officers for trumped-up reasons and invited to bribe their way out of jail.

LBGTQ+ traveler safety

Tijuana prides itself on being an “anything goes” city but, despite its twin streaks of Catholic conservatism and machismo culture, Mexico, in toto, has got behind LGBTQ+ rights. It was the second Latin American country to enact anti-discrimination laws for the LGBTQ+ community and in 2011 the Mexican Constitution was amended to reflect that. Transgender identities are celebrated among the Zapotec people of Oaxaca state and the Yucatán Mayas.

Crossing the border from the US

Visitors must have valid passports, visas, and a Tourist Migration Form (FMM), a short-term permit that allows for stays of up to 180 days.
UPDATE - 29 September 2022: Hurricane Ian made landfall as a strong Category 4, causing extensive damage and flooding. The hurricane has weakened to a Tropical Storm and is making its way across central Florida, headed for Georgia and South Carolina. It may strengthen again and is still dangerous. Travelers in the area should monitor the situation and follow official warnings.

Currently a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 155mph, Ian is forecast to make landfall on the southwestern coast of Florida near Ft. Myers later today as a hurricane of Category 4 or greater. It is already nearing Category 5.

Catastrophic storm surges of 12 to 18 feet above ground level are expected along with destructive waves. Catastrophic winds are expected to extend well inland.

Be sure to check the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, and keep an eye on local media for the latest updates.

If you're in an area where a storm is projected to hit, please check with authorities, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation.

Here are helpful tips on hurricane safety.

Unrest in Washington, DC – January 2021

In response to the violent insurrection at the US Capitol Building on January 6, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced a state of emergency, in effect through January 24. National Guard troops have been mobilized in preparation for potential unrest in the days leading up to and during President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20. The mayor has urged people to avoid the city during the inauguration.

Protests have also been reported at state capitols around the country, and more may be planned in upcoming days. As violence may break out, people should steer clear of these gatherings.

Wildfires – Western US – Sept-Nov 2020

Wildfires are raging in several western states, with the most severe currently happening in Colorado, California, and Oregon. Avoid travel to affected areas, and be on the lookout for road closures. Drivers should be sure to carry ample fuel as well as food and water. One of the biggest dangers from the fires is air quality - stay indoors when air quality is poor, even if you don't smell smoke. Ash in the air can also be hazardous.

Protests and potential riots – June-Oct 2020

Protests against racism and police brutality have been held in cities across the country over the past several months. Some protests have turned violent. Tear gas and non-lethal (but still very dangerous) projectiles have been used against protestors, and there have been sometimes deadly clashes between protestors and anti-protestors. Travelers are advised to use caution if near or attending a protest, and to be ready to leave quickly should violence erupt. Travelers should also keep in mind that coronavirus (COVID-19) is a risk when large numbers of people are gathered, and to take appropriate precautions.

Get tips on staying safe during civil unrest.

Hurricane Zeta approaches US Gulf Coast – 26 October 2020

Currently a powerful tropical storm, Zeta is forecast to strengthen over the next few days, and make landfall on the central Gulf Coast as a hurricane of Category 1 or greater. Landfall is expected on Wednesday, and will likely be centered in Louisiana, but people from east Texas to Florida should begin preparing.

Be sure to check the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, and keep an eye on local media for the latest updates.

Here are helpful tips on hurricane safety.

Hurricane Delta approaches US Gulf Coast – 6 October 2020

Currently a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Delta is forecast to make landfall on the central Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane or greater. Landfall is expected late Friday or early Saturday, and will likely be centered in Louisiana, but people from east Texas to Florida should begin preparing. Impacts such as flooding and storm surge may start a day or two ahead of the storm, and are likely to be major.

Be sure to check the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, and keep an eye on local media for the latest updates.

Here are helpful tips on hurricane safety.

Hurricane Sally approaches Gulf Coast – 14 September 2020

Hurricane Sally is currently headed towards the coastline of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and is expected to make landfall tonight or tomorrow morning, possibly as a Category 2 storm. Life-threatening flooding and storm surge are predicted.

Hurricane Paulette is currently impacting Bermuda and may move towards the southeastern United States in upcoming days. Tropical Storm Teddy has also formed in the central Atlantic and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves west.

Be sure to check the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, and keep an eye on local media for the latest updates.

Here are helpful tips on hurricane safety.

Hurricane Douglas approaches Hawaii, Hurricane Hanna approaches Texas – 25 July 2020

Hurricane Douglas is currently approaching the Hawaiian Islands. Hurricane Watches are in effect for the Big Island, Maui County, and Oahu. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Kauai County. The storm is forecast to pass about 30 miles north of Maui with sustained winds of 90mph.

Hurricane Hanna is on course to strike the Texas coast south of Corpus Christi. The storm is expected to make landfall this afternoon as a Category 1 hurricane. A life-threatening storm surge is possible.

Wildfires in California: a statewide emergency declared – October 2019

Strong winds have spread wildfires in Northern and Southern California, destroying homes and land, and forcing 185,000 people to evacuate.

There are blackouts in Northern California due to Pacific Gas & Electric Co shutting off power to two million people to avoid further fires being caused by fallen electric power lines.

Strong winds are expected to last until Wednesday, so it's important you listen to the advice of firefighters and stay up to date with local news reports.

We suggest you check your government’s travel advisory for their latest advice on travel to the USA, and if you're planning on traveling there soon, contact your tour operator or provider for more information on any changes or updates to your travel plans.

Hurricane Dorian threatens southeastern coast - September 3, 2019

How to survive a hurricane

Hurricane warnings and categories

Wildfires in Southeastern Alaska - August 30, 2019

Hurricane Dorian threatens southeastern coast – 3 September 2019

Hurricane Dorian is currently a Category 2 storm heading towards the US mainland, where it is projected to move close to the coast of Florida tonight through Wednesday, and then along Georgia and the Carolinas. Life-threatening storm surge and flooding is possible, and mandatory evacuations have been ordered for dozens of coastal communities. Be sure to check the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, and keep an eye on local media for the latest updates.

If you're in an area where the storm is projected to hit, please check with authorities, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation.

How to survive a hurricane

The absolutely best way to survive a hurricane is to avoid one. Get away from it, but if you make the decision to leave, make that decision early. Do not leave it until the last minute because you may find yourself caught without proper shelter.

If you decide to stay and "ride it out" it is advisable to get to an authorized shelter. The locations of these will be broadcast, or locals will know where they are. If there is no shelter, prepare to "shelter in place" in an internal room without windows.

Once a "storm watch" has been issued, make sure you are prepared in the event that the watch becomes a "warning."

Fill the gas tank of your car.

Check batteries in flashlights and radios.

Have extra batteries on hand.

Secure all doors and windows.

Close shutters or board up the windows.

Have extra supplies with you such as non-perishable food, clean drinking water, a half-gallon of water per person/per day (enough for a couple of days), and prescription drugs.

During the storm

Never go out during the storm. The winds can send flying debris into you causing injury and even death.

Stay away from windows and doors.

Keep on the alert for additional storm warnings. Hurricanes are known to spawn tornadoes so be prepared to take cover if one should strike.

While the storm is in progress avoid using electrical appliances.

Stay off the telephone.

All pets should be secured in carriers. The storm will be a frightening experience for them as well, and they could injure themselves or you if they panic.

Do not light candles or lanterns; they could get blown over causing a fire.

The eye of the storm passing over could make you think the storm is over when the worst is still yet to come. Only use this calm in an extreme emergency to make critical repairs.

Only after an official "all clear" has been issued is it safe to come out.

After the storm

Beware of downed power lines and gas leaks

Stay away from heavily damaged areas

Listen to your radio for instructions.

Hurricane warnings and categories

A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when wind speeds reach 74 mph or greater - Category 1.

Category 2 wind speeds are 96 mph to 110 mph

Category 3 - 111 mph to 129 mph

Category 4 - 130 mph to 156 mph

Category 5 - greater than 157 mph (note, there are no further categories)

A "watch" is issued when hurricane-force winds are possible in the named region (so maybe a hurricane is coming).

A "warning" is issued when hurricane-force winds are expected in the named region (so a hurricane is definitely coming).

Wildfires in southeastern Alaska - 30 August 2019

Several wildfires are currently burning in Southeast Alaska and impacting popular tourist areas, including the Kenai Peninsula and Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley. At the time of writing, the McKinley Fire in the Mat-Su Valley was at 78% containment, and the Caribou Lake Fire near Homer was at 57% containment. The Swan Lake Fire on the Kenai Peninsula has been slowly increasing, but has remained at around 20% containment.

For the latest information, check with Alaska Wildland Fire Information.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service closed portions of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, including all lands in the Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area, as well as parts of the Chugach National Forest.

Travelers should expect delays on the Sterling Highway between Sterling and the junction with the Seward Highway to continue through the weekend. Swan Lake Fire suppression activities and dense smoke have restricted travel on this route recently. Drivers should be sure to carry ample fuel as well as food and water. Do not stop along the highway within the fire area.

One of the biggest dangers from the fire is air quality. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Advisory in effect through Friday afternoon for the Susitna Valley, Kenai Peninsula and Copper River Valley.

If you’re planning a trip to Alaska in upcoming weeks, be sure to check with your tour operator, airline, and hotel about potential changes or cancellations.

Tropical Storm Barry forming off the Louisiana Coast - 11 July 2019

Tropical Storm Barry is moving across the Gulf of Mexico towards Louisiana and is expected to make landfall Friday or Saturday, possibly as a Category 1 hurricane. A state of emergency has been issued in Louisiana. Heavy rainfall and flooding is expected for much of eastern Louisiana, southern and central Mississipi, and southeast Arkansas.

Please check with authorities, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation.

One thing I have learned is that if you spend enough time outdoors, you are bound to encounter a variety of wildlife, including snakes.

This fact shouldn’t deter anyone from exploring the outdoors, but it does mean that if you plan to be active outside, you should be prepared for all situations. I’ll share my tips on what to do if you see a snake, and (although we all hope it doesn’t come to this) what to do if you get bitten.

Before you set off, these are some of the most common venomous snakes you should be aware of in the United States and where you’re likely to find them.

Venomous snakes in the USA

Common areas to find venomous snakes in the USA

Snake bite prevention

What to do if you are bitten by a snake

Snake bite treatment

Venomous snakes in the USA

Most venomous snakes in USA are members of the pit viper family. Here are some of the most common kinds of vipers, as well as one other dangerous species.

Copperheads

These snakes are easily identified by their reddish-brown heads and hourglass-shaped markings along their bodies

They have blocky, triangular heads which are set off from their thick bodies by slender necks

Baby copperheads have neon yellow tail tips, which they wiggle to lure prey. Their tails fade usually by the time they are three to four years old.

Cottonmouths (water moccasins)

Like all vipers, cottonmouths have heat-sensing pits in their faces, between their eyes and nostrils, so that they can detect prey even when it’s dark

Their bodies are thick and dark brown to black in color, with slightly paler bellies

Cottonmouths are often confused with non-venomous water snakes. A sure way to tell them apart is by their eyes: cottonmouths and other pit vipers have slitted, cat-like pupils.

Rattlesnakes

There are a number of subspecies of rattlesnake to be aware of, including timber rattlesnakes, eastern and western diamondback rattlesnakes, black diamond rattlesnakes, and tiger rattlesnakes

Each species is distinct and differ in region, appearance, and toxicity of venom

However, all rattlesnakes can be distinguished by the rattle on the ends of their tails, which they shake when they feel threatened, or as a warning before they attack.

Coral snakes

Coral snakes are the only species in this list that are not members of the pit viper family. They are relatively slender snakes with bright red, yellow, and black stripes

Coral snakes look very similar to harmless scarlet snakes. You can tell them apart by observing the order of their colors—coral snakes’ red stripes are bordered by yellow. As the saying goes: “red touching yellow kills a fellow; red touching black, safe for Jack.”

Their range extends through the Southeast and along the Gulf of Mexico. You are less likely to come across one than you are the other snakes listed above, because they spend the majority of their time underground, only surfacing to hunt lizards, frogs, and other smaller snakes.

This list of venomous snakes is not completely comprehensive and only includes the most common snakes for the USA. Before taking a hiking or camping trip, be sure to research what kinds of wildlife you should watch out for.

Common areas to find venomous snakes in the USA

The kind of snakes you are likely to encounter depends which part of the country you are in, and the habitat and behaviors of the specific species.

Copperheads and cottonmouths are most common across the East Coast and Midwest United States. Copperheads can be found in almost any habitat—including suburban backyards—whereas cottonmouths are semi-aquatic, and as such are almost always found in or near a body of water

Those living in or visiting the South, Southwest, and Midwest should primarily be concerned with rattlesnakes. Texas and Arizona are the two states with the highest populations of rattlesnakes.

A southern copperhead snake in ambush position in Arkansas, United States. Photo credit: Getty Images/Rex Lisman

Snake bite prevention

Knowing where to look out for snakes is an important part of snake bite prevention.

Snakes like to slither in tall grasses and brush. When hiking, always stay on marked trails and avoid walking in areas where you can’t see where you’re stepping

If you do have to walk through tall grass, you should tread heavily and stamp your feet, as the vibrations on the ground will warn snakes that a large creature is nearby, and they should move away

However, If you see a snake close to you, do not stamp your feet as this may cause the snake to feel threatened, and provoke it to bite. Stay still and wait for it to move away?

Wearing tall boots and long pants can help protect your feet and ankles from a bite if you do step on or near a snake

It is common for snakes to hide under logs, rocks, and even camping gear. Always use caution when picking up anything from the ground

Never attempt to pick up a snake, even if you think it is dead. Do not seek them out, and if you happen to come across one, do not attempt to catch, trap, or kill it. Snakes will bite humans when they are threatened or feel as though they are being attacked. They do not bite randomly or without a reason. Leaving snakes alone is the best way to protect both yourself and the wildlife

Most snake bites are to hands, feet, and ankles, and happen when people step on or pick up a snake.

What to do if you are bitten by a snake

If you do get bitten by a snake, don’t panic.

Deaths from snake bites are extremely rare. Of the roughly 7,000 to 8,000 people who are bitten by snakes every year in the United States, only about five of these are fatal. As long as you receive proper and timely medical treatment for the bite, you do not have to worry about permanent damage or death

Many snake bites (even those from venomous snakes) are dry, which means that no venom is released during the bite. You should always seek professional care for a snake bite (even if it is a dry bite, as there is always risk of infection,) but remember that you may not have even been envenomed (poisoned)

Remain calm and still – keeping your heart rate down will slow the spread of the venom. Take deep breaths and move slowly or not at all if possible, while someone else goes for helps. If you are in a dangerous area or on a trail inaccessible to medical help slowly walk, not run, to a safe area, sit down and wait for help to arrive.

The reason that the annual number of deaths from snake bites is so low is because of modern medicine. It’s important not to be hysterical, but also to treat a snake bite as a medical emergency. Even if you believe the bite was given by a non-venomous snake, the consequences of being wrong are too severe to merit the risk.

If you are able, try to identify the snake.

It’s helpful if you are able to recognize the kind of snake that bit you or even remember distinctive patterns, colors, and size; these details can help medical professionals treat the bite

However, do not risk going near the snake in order to make the identification

Never attempt to trap, injure, or kill the snake that bit you.

Snake bite treatment

You should always carry a basic first aid kit when you are camping or hiking outdoors. While you are waiting for the professionals, you can begin treatment by doing the following:

Disinfect the wound and cover it with a clean, dry bandage

Remove any tight jewelry near the wound that could restrict blood flow if the area around the bite starts to swell

Sit or lay down with the bitten limb below the level of the heart.

Never attempt to suck or cut out the venom from a snake bite. Venom spreads too quickly from the puncture site for either of these strategies to be effective, and either would only increase risk of infection to the wound.

If your bite is on an extremity, do not attempt to tourniquet the bitten limb. Doing so will cut off circulation and can make the injury worse by keeping the venom localized, leading to, at worst, death of the limb and amputation.

If you know you will be hiking in an area with venomous snakes, carry a compression bandage with you. In the event of a bite, wrap compression bandages up the length of the bitten limb. It should be tight enough to immobilize the limb, but not too tight that it cuts off blood flow. if you don’t have a compression bandage, you can improvise with a scarf, shirt sleeve, or other long, clean article of clothing.

Do not drink alcohol or caffeine. Caffeine will increase your heart rate, which you want to remain as low as possible. And while it might seem like a good idea to use alcohol as a painkiller, because it is a stimulant, it will first increase circulation (quickening the spread of venom) and as a depressant, weaken the body’s resistance.

Remember: the only effective treatment for a venomous snake bite is antivenom.

While coming across a venomous snake can be a frightening experience, don’t let fear keep you indoors this summer. Remember that most snakes you will encounter are harmless to humans, and even the venomous kinds will not attack unprovoked.

By taking appropriate precautions and knowing what to do in case of an emergency, you can ensure that you are as safe as possible when enjoying the outdoors.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Tee-roy	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>637719930	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A rattlesnake on a rock with an open mouth</imageCaption>

From hiking safety to bears, in this video hear tips from travelers and locals on how to stay safe in wilderness areas across the USA.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Joel explores the USA wilderness from deserts in New Mexico to the forest of California. Its vastness makes it as dangerous as it is beautiful.

He asks travelers, van lifers and locals for their safety tips, including learning how to stay safe in remote areas, limiting and recognising danger, using the right equipment, staying hydrated and always letting people know where you’re going, who with and when you expect to be back, plus hiking safety.

Bears and big cats are just two of the animal dangers, while extremes in weather present other risks.

Ben-Alex Dupris: America's dangerous in a good way. It's still a place that you can playfully get in trouble. So enjoy the woods. Don't feed the bears.

Tristan: I would define this as like a high desert climate. It's a really cool environment, because you have all these crazy rock formations. But there's still mountains and rivers, and it's kind of like undiscovered. So we're big on skiing, biking, rafting, rock climbing. It's pretty easy for anyone to get on the trail. I'd say the two most important things are just having good shoes and knowing that you have water. From there, it's always good to have a buddy to go with. If you are going alone, at least let somebody in your hostel or hotel know, so if you're not back by the evening, at least somebody is wondering where you are.

Jak Wildman: We have little black bears here, and we have big cats. We have some mountain lions. I would definitely recommend getting a guide. Don't expect to sit in an office chair 40, 50 hours a week, and then just jump in your car and drive 300 miles to the desert, and be able to go and hike 10, 15 miles in the beating sun. That's unsafe. Anytime that you start to feel unsafe and you start to get worried, that puts you in a negative mental attitude. That can create an unsafe situation when there wasn't one previously. I guess at the same time, be able to recognize real danger when it's there.

Ben-Alex Dupris: If you go into the desert in the states, it's really easy to get lost. It's also easy to lose your cell phone signal. The weather shifts, and there's a lot of windstorms - so long sleeves and even long pants, lightweight, of course. Don't wear your wool clothes. You should have at least a gallon of water in your car because the air is so dry, that it sucks all the water out of your body. I personally would always bring an extra gallon of gasoline just in case. Because the heat evaporates your gas tank. And if you end up hundreds of miles away from a gas station, you want to have a little bit extra. Always bring some food, water, and hopefully, don't die.

Jared Worchel: Bear spray is highly recommended. If you need it and you don't have it, that's a problem. If you have it and you don't need it, that's not a problem. Also, some form of pain medication. Because if you sprain an ankle, and it's something that you can walk on, but it's extremely painful and you won't walk on it. But if you take some pain medication, you can walk that four miles. You can get to help. And then you can deal with it later. While you're hiking, to turn around and look at the trail. Especially if you come to like an intersection. Because you'll walk right through and you'll think, oh, yeah, I went right there. But when you're coming back it looks totally different. And then before the GPS watch, I also always carried surveying tape. I can put surveying tape in the tree, and then move on a little bit. I know where I came from. And obviously, collect those on the way back out. Leave no trace.

Ben-Alex Dupris: Grizzly bears will kill you. So grizzly bears are not playing around. You want to make sure that you don't have a lot of extra food and that you're cautious to stay away from them you don't approach them. so don't try to take a picture with them and get too close.

I found that traveling in Greenland is not a particularly dangerous activity. At more than 836,300 mi² (2,000,000km²) – twice the size of Western Australia or just a bit larger than Alaska – Greenland is the world’s largest island, with 75% of its landmass above the Arctic Circle and 80% encased in ice.

With a population of barely 60,000 people – about the size of a large country town – Greenland only has a dozen population centers, most of them on the milder western coastline.

Greenland is not the sort of place where you have to keep looking over your shoulder, but rather at your feet because you’ll most likely be hiking somewhere rough and rocky. Here are my top tips to stay safe in Greenland.

Is there any crime in Greenland?

Visas and entry

Food and water in Greenland

Hiking safety in Greenland

Go with an experienced guide and pack right

Arctic mosquitoes

Safety tips for kayaking in Greenland

Enjoy the wildlife from a safe distance

Listen to The World Nomads Podcast: Greenland

1. Is there any crime in Greenland?

Greenland is not a place you have to worry about crime. According to the statistical website, Numbeo, Greenland rates as low for crime and high for safety. The capital Nuuk's low Crime Index of 21 compares favorably with other large Australian cities like Melbourne (44) or US cities like Los Angeles (43), although the number of reported rapes among younger residents is alarming especially in the remote villages. But for regular travelers, crime is all but non-existent.

A vintage 'working boat' on an excursion amid the icebergs of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Ice Fjord. Photo credit: Roderick Eime

2. Visas and entry

Greenland is a country administered as part of the so-called ‘Danish Realm’ and is easy to visit for most travelers and visitors from the USA, UK, Australia and Canada who do not require visas.

Residents of countries, like South Africa and Russia, will require visas, so if in doubt, click here to read the list of nationalities that will require a visa for Greenland.

A campsite at Sermilik fjord, Greenland. Photo credit: Getty Images/robas

3. Food and water in Greenland

Be careful by all means, but Greenland has clean, safe drinking water everywhere. Otherwise, just take normal hygiene precautions as you would anywhere.

The indigenous Inuit Greenlanders' diet, as I found out, is naturally restricted to what they can harvest from the sea. As such, there is little in the way of vegetables apart from the few berries, tubers and grasses that grow on the uncovered land.

Of course, it is polite to accept food offered to you by your hosts, but some dishes might challenge your palate. One item I have tried on more than one occasion is Muktuk, a frozen and cured form of whale or seal skin and blubber. It's one of the few native foods I cannot tolerate.

The type of whaling conducted in Greenland is classified as ‘Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling’, which means small-scale, not-for-profit and in order to meet the nutritional and cultural requirements of Indigenous people. Travelers should reach their own conclusions on whether or not to eat it.

4. Hiking safety in Greenland

Most travelers visit Greenland for its scenic beauty and adventure activities like hiking and kayaking.

If hiking, wear sturdy, well-worn in, grippy, closed footwear as trails can be uneven and rocky or even icy in patches

The cool Arctic climate can be very pleasant in summer with averages of around 50ºF (10ºC) (although these averages are rising). My advice is to pack clothing you can layer, which is particularly applicable to outdoor activities in Greenland

Make sure your outermost layer is water/spray proof, and your innermost layer is warm. Merino undergarments are excellent. A beanie and gloves are useful too.

Hikers admire icebergs that appear to 'float' mid-air at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Ice Fjord on the west Coast of Greenland. Photo credit: Roderick Eime

5. Go with an experienced guide and pack right

If you’re traveling in unfamiliar territory, it’s wise to go with a guide, and, just like hiking anywhere, carry sufficient water, a sun hat, sunglasses, trail snacks and insect repellent.

Greenland is a great destination to see and walk on glaciers, but the latter is a precarious activity and should be avoided unless you are with an experienced guide on a marked path. Don't wander off, as glaciers can shift and crumble without warning.

A woman hiking near a melting glacier in Greenland. Photo credit: Getty Images/robas

6. Arctic mosquitoes

Arctic mosquitoes are legendary and ferocious, but you can avoid these pests by wearing a net around your hat, staying close to the sea (for the breeze) or using a repellent. Light colored clothes are less attractive to mosquitoes.

I discovered the local solution to this problem is to take the leaves from the Labrador tea (qajaasat) plant, squash them in your hand and rub the juice on any exposed areas.

If you must use commercial repellents, use a liquid or cream, as sprays are not eco-friendly.

7. Safety tips for kayaking in Greenland

If you’re kayaking, wear a dry suit to insulate yourself against the freezing water in case a capsize occurs. Kayak tour operators in Greenland will supply these along with instructions and tips.

One of the most important safety tips when kayaking in any Arctic location is to keep well clear of icebergs. It’s tempting to get up close to see these big blue beauties, but icebergs can roll without warning and, take it from me, you don’t want to be anywhere near an iceberg the size of a five-story building when it decides to invert itself.

The same goes for glaciers; never kayak within 650ft (200m) of a glacier face because when they calve, as they frequently do, they will throw a wave big enough to surf on. If a big wave is heading toward you, quickly point the bow (front) of your kayak into the wave and meet it head-on.

Scenery in East Greenland. Photo credit: Getty Images/donwogdo

8. Enjoy wildlife, but keep your distance

The most dangerous animal in the Arctic is the polar bear but as a summer visitor to Greenland, you are unlikely to ever see one, much less find yourself in a life-threatening encounter.

Sled dogs might look cute, but never approach one. They are often chained near houses and look lonely, but do not be tempted to go and pat one as they can be unpredictable and defensive, and may lash out at a stranger. If the owner is nearby, ask by all means, but the most likely answer will be 'no' - for your own safety.

One animal that you might enjoy seeing is the big woolly Musk Ox, but you should keep a safe distance and be cautious.

Experienced polar expedition leader, Susan Adie of G Adventures, had one encounter with these beasts which she’ll never forget.

“I was guiding a group of guests when we came upon a small herd of beautiful musk ox including calves,” Susan told me, “we stood a safe distance, perhaps 100 yards (91m/300ft), and noted that the herd had taken up their typical defense ring, with the young in the center. What we didn’t see was a big lone shaggy bull who’d been obscured by a large rock. When he wandered into view he was just 40 yards (35m/120ft) or so away and I think we scared each other, because as we slowly backed away, our hearts beating in our throats, the bull stomped loudly, snorted and charged. I was standing between the animal and my retreating guests when he came to a sudden halt just maybe 10 yards (9m/30ft) away, still snorting louder than ever. I think I was about to faint at this point, but the bull decided to run quickly back to his herd while I sat on a rock for a few minutes catching my breath.”

Patrick Abboud: Do you think it's safe for tourists to come to Tepito?

Gang Member: No. If they're coming with someone they know, then yes. If not, they'll leave without their camera. Don't come here, saying, "I'm a tourist." With their camera and their sunglasses. I hear people saying, "No! I got robbed right here on the corner." And there they are with their phones. On the actual corner, like this. Looking at your phone there sending Whatsapp messages and the gang watching.

Patrick Abboud: Have you ever felt bad about stealing from tourists?

Gang Member: No. It's a job. As long as you don't look for trouble the town takes you in. It's a good neighborhood. This town is so beautiful. Yes, it's fierce, but we're not thieves. This is a town of workers, sportsmen, singers, artists.

Patrick Abboud: It's the real Mexico City. You've really got to know where you're going. You've got to kind of like do the research, know where you are and what you're surrounded by. You don't realize that you could be crossing through dangerous neighborhoods. A lot of people think Mexico is a very dangerous place to visit as a traveler. You're a policeman. How true is that?

Policeman: The country of Mexico and its states are very safe. 100%. Unfortunately, sometimes on TV, due to the misinformation that news media gives... It's the same as in different parts of the world. Assaults occur, robberies, but Mexico City, the country of Mexico, the state of Oaxaca, are very safe places to visit. Tourists always receive that kind of security, and even more here in the city of Oaxaca, where we are.

Tourist: I think there is a misconception of Mexico as a dangerous place, but really, I don't feel any different here than I would in London. The idea of Mexico is it doesn't really translate into reality.

Local: We have some bad reputation about it, but I don't think it's more dangerous than other cities.

Tourist 2: It's a little bit similar everywhere. I feel quite safe here in Mexico. People are really nice. I left my bag a few times already and people are just running behind you. Like, "Hey, you forgot something". So, and it's not tourists really like Mexico, the locals. Yeah. Mexico City. Like the police are everywhere and they are warning you for like, be safe. Take your bag in front of you.

Local: As a woman, I don't go by myself to places when it is dark. I am very careful about the way I dress. If I am going to be by myself,

Tourist: When I'm asking for the way for example, I’m asking women, not men, most of the time. Why? Why is that? It feels safer. Sometimes you don't, you never know who is in front of you. So sometimes it feels safer to ask a woman and to have the answers from a woman. And it also gives you tips. Sometimes.

Local: You just have to be careful with where you go, know the route, know the time and not give a lot of information about yourself.

Tourist: When I travel, I try and travel just with one backpack and have it small enough that I don't need to put it on top of the bus. So I never lose control of it. You know, I can always have it at my feet. That's the precaution I take is traveling light, the less stuff you have, the less you have to worry about it. I have a padlock. You can make it stick to something in the bus. So that's my number one. So padlock for your case or something? Yeah. On the bus and your valuables in the money belt, under your clothes. Don't go to the beach at night, it's a hotspot for being mugged.

Local: To keep myself safe when I'm traveling I make sure I have apps like Uber, for example, on my phone or in Mexico, the auto app to have like, to be able to check everything. But also that people know where you are.

LGBTQ+ legal status in the US

Safety concerns for LGBTQ+ travelers

Queer friendly places

LGBTQ+ legal status in the US

LGBTQ+ Americans enjoy most of the same rights as non-queer citizens though these rights were granted relatively recently. Sexual activity between consenting adults of the same sex has been legal nationwide since June 2003. All states license and recognize marriage between same-sex couples since 26 June 2015. Pride celebrations that year were particularly jubilant.

The United States lags several Western nations in the rights it grants queer citizens. It wasn’t until June 2020 that the U.S. Supreme Court said the language of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. However, queer people are still fired, denied housing or refused service for being gay, lesbian or transgender in some parts of the country. As a result, LGBTQ+ persons in the United States may still face some challenges not experienced by non-LGBTQ+ residents, particularly in the Deep South and rural areas with large conservative populations.

Safety concerns for LGBTQ+ travelers

Although acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights and people has risen in recent decades – particularly dramatically among younger Americans – there was an increase in reports of homophobia and transphobia during the Trump era paralleling a lamentable rise in right-wing nationalism.

The current U.S. administration has reversed some of the protections denied to LGBTQ+ people during the Trump administration, but there continues to be an alarming increase in reports of anti-trans murders and other violence especially those perpetrated against younger American transwomen of color. However, there are few, if any, reports of anti-LGBTQ+ or anti-trans violence perpetrated against visitors.

Queer-friendly places to go in the USA

There are many queer-friendly places in the United States and very few that LGBTQ+ travelers should avoid. For the most part big cities are more accepting and welcoming of diversity than rural places, though it’s more complex than that. There are parts of big cities where local out people may not wish to demonstrate even mild expressions of affection like handholding – for example, parts of the South Bronx in New York or South Central Los Angeles; though it’s unlikely any visitors would find themselves in these places.

Counterintuitively, while Indiana has a reputation as a conservative rural state where you probably won’t want to sport a pink Mohawk and kiss your lesbian partner on the lips in public; South Bend, Indiana had a very popular out gay and married mayor, Pete Buttigieg, who ran for the Democratic nomination for president of the U.S. and currently serves as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. There are breathtakingly beautiful national parks in the American wilderness that actively promote to LGBTQ+ travelers. So queer visitors are encouraged to keep an open mind and do their research; a warm welcome may await in surprising locales throughout the U.S.

Here are just a few of the many destinations with a significant LGBTQ+ local population where queer visitors can find many venues, activities and events of cultural interest and where they’ll find lots of other queer people.

New York City

It's the number-one tourist destination for queer visitors to the U.S., and it’s no surprise with vibrant LGBTQ+-popular neighborhoods and nightlife; over 1,000 historic sites of interest to queer people; a thriving performing arts culture with numerous productions large and small with very queer themes; and queer people everywhere. The Big Apple, especially the area around Stonewall, is a must-visit for all travelers who are remotely interested in queer culture.

San Francisco

Usually, number one or two for LGBTQ+ visitors, San Francisco is a true queer mecca. LGBTQ+ people live everywhere, and despite years of gentrification, the Castro remains one of the queerest neighborhoods in the U.S.

Chicago

Chicago is both a regional and national draw for LGBTQ+ visitors. Everyone affectionately refers to the gayborhood as “Boys Town”— even the gruffest looking male taxi driver.

Lesbians are more likely to make their home in Andersonville. Note that in 2021, the neighborhood officially changed its name to Northalsted to promote inclusion, but not everyone is on board with that, and you’ll hear both names used.

Fort Lauderdale

Tourism officials in Fort Lauderdale make a huge, concerted effort to reach out to all segments of LGBTQ+ travelers including often-ignored trans travelers, same-sex parents with children and lesbians. Fort Lauderdale’s destination marketing organization attributes $1.5 billion annually in terms of revenues generated by LGBTQ+ visitors.

It's more laidback than nearby Miami (which is more popular with party-seeking younger gay men) and is one of the few cities getting queerer as retirees flock here for the convivial spirit, warm weather and lower cost of living compared to other big North American cities.

Other LGBTQ+-Friendly Places

Here are a handful more of the many other urbane hot spots where queer travelers will feel super welcome:

West Hollywood and San Diego, California

Miami, Florida

New Orleans, Louisiana – home to the 4th-highest concentration of LGBTQ+ people in the country and the South's biggest queer celebration

Boston, Provincetown and Northampton (especially for lesbians), Massachusetts

Palm Springs, California – holds an annual LGBTQ+ White Party, Pride Festival and The Dinah, a celebration for lesbians.

In a sign of changing times, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Ohio; Houston, Texas; southern Illinois; and other “Red State” cities are also eagerly promoting themselves as LGBTQ+ welcoming.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/BrigitteMERLE	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>986952376	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>San Francisco , Castro district, Castro street</imageCaption>

Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre) is a haven for hiking, biking and adventure. But it's in the middle of drug cartel territory, so is it safe for travelers?

https://www.worldnomads.com

Is Copper Canyon safe?

Hiking safety in Copper Canyon

Is the Copper Canyon Railroad safe?

Safety for women in Copper Canyon

Is Copper Canyon safe?

Drugs are a way of life in the Copper Canyon region of southwest Chihuahua, the country’s largest state, in northern Mexico. Weed and opium poppies, the raw material for heroin, are the cash crops there, grown in the folds of the mountains, and zealously watched over by cartel muscle.

The drug trade has led to deforestation in the area, the monopolizing of irrigation sources and the cartels diversifying their criminal portfolio to include illegal logging and wildcat mining, neither of which do they consider a spectator activity.

Where the cartels are operating, the indigenous Rarámuri people, for whom the Copper Canyon has been home since records began, have been either displaced, killed or persuaded, for little or no money, to work for the gangs (they are known for their long-distance running ability – “rarámuri” means fleet of foot – and have been used to mule narcotics over the US border).

For all its handicraft stores, bars, restaurants and colonial charm, the small town of Creel shouldn’t be taken at face value by tourists. The main hub for the Rarámuri and a stop on the Copper Canyon Railroad, it sits on one of most lucrative drug corridors on the planet (which leads to Ciudad Juárez, the former “murder capital of the world”) and marks a line between the territories of two major criminal organizations: La Línea, which works with the Juárez Cartel; and the Gente Nueva, which works with the Sinaloa Cartel.

But as with most of the towns in the region, you’ll be fine there so long as you exercise a reasonable degree of caution, especially at night. It’s better to avoid trouble than learn firsthand about how police corruption is something of a specialty of the state of Chihuahua. If driving,

Keep your vehicle doors locked and windows up

Avoid driving after dark

Stick to the main highways

Steer clear of isolated roads.

The towns along the way are relatively safe. Take caution when out at night and avoid withdrawing cash from an ATM. If you have had a bit of a rowdy night at a bar, don't walk back to your accommodation, grab a taxi instead.

The local authorities advise avoiding wandering outside in any of the towns at night, and definitely avoid getting involved with illegal activities, such as drugs. Some local guides also advise travelers to avoid taking photos of anyone carrying a gun.

Is it safe to hike Copper Canyon?

Yes and no. Tourists are most assuredly not welcome where cartels do business, of course, but there’s a lot of Canyon to go around – 25,000 square miles of it. Wild, rugged, intensely beautiful and bigger and deeper than the Grand Canyon in the United States, it is hiking heaven. To get the most out of this scenic wonder, a trusted guide is recommended, especially one with knowledge of the native flora and fauna (the Copper Canyon is home to 290 recorded bird species, 24 of which are endemic to the area).

Hikers who would rather do without expert assistance should travel in groups, wear plenty of sunscreen (the sun’s rays are stronger at high altitudes), carry as much water as is comfortable and have reliable, up-to-the-minute information as to the safety of their chosen routes, and then stick to those routes.

The best time to visit is November to March. June to July is hotter than the sun, and August to September is monsoon season.

Is the Copper Canyon Railroad safe?

The Copper Canyon Railroad, also known as the Ferrocarril Barrancas del Cobre, the Ferrocarril Chihuahua-Pacifíco and El Chepe, is an engineering marvel and patrolled by armed guards, and yes, it’s safe. If you travel on the Chepe Express (Los Mochis, in Sinaloa, to Creel and vice versa) your journey time will be about nine hours. On the Chepe Regional (Los Mochis to Chihuahua and vice versa), it will be 16. The latter service offers more stops, and you can make three of them at no extra cost (El Fuerte, Bahuichivo and Creel would be my choice).

Safety for women in Copper Canyon

For women traveling alone, stick to the well-traveled locations.

Travel by train and keep your valuables secure while on the train

Stay in tourist-orientated hotels along the main train line

Always use a trusted guide, especially if you want to venture off the beaten track.

Common sense usually prevails, so keep your wits about you and your trip should be trouble-free.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Arturo Peña Romano Med	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

What are the important issues affecting travelers visiting Canada?
A state of emergency has been declared in British Columbia in Canada as wildfires rip through forested areas, threatening nearby towns. Thousands of local residents and tourists have been told to evacuate and the state of emergency will stay in place for 14 days as of Wednesday 15th August 2018.

There are currently 566 fires burning in British Columbia with hot and dry weather conditions hampering efforts to get the fires under control. Several provincial parks are closed and campsite restrictions are in place across British Columbia.

Please listen to all official directives and warnings. Failure to comply with directives from government authorities means you won't be covered by travel insurance.

Most foreign nationals are currently banned from entry to Canada. Read our travel alert for more information.

Many travelers visiting Canada require a visa, and requirements vary depending on several factors, including nationality and purpose of visit. Find out about visa requirements for Canada, including working visas and border crossing from the United States.

Canada is a vast country, the second largest in the world, but it shares a border with only one other country: the United States. Visitors from the US can cross at many points along the world’s longest unguarded border, and from the state of Alaska as well. Most other visitors fly in, or come on a cruise ship to ports on either coast –most notably Vancouver and Halifax.

Visa requirements for Canada

To find out if you need a visa for Canada, the Canadian government has provided this handy, interactive service.

You simply select the country code that matches the one on your passport indicating your nationality, and press GO.

On the next page, depending on your nationality and your mode of transportation, you will find out the documents you need. Many foreign nationals flying into Canada now need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). You can apply with a valid passport, a credit or a debit card, and an email address.

Working visas

Many people around the world would love to work and live in Canada! Working visas are available, including a program for youth called International Experience Canada (IEC).

You can get all the information you need on eligibility and other requirements here.

Border crossings

You don’t need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to cross the border into Canada from the U.S. if you are driving. You will need a passport, and a visa depending on your nationality.

To drive in Canada, you need a valid driver’s license. You can find all the rules here.

<imageAttribution>iStock/LeoPatrizi	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>621242410	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Hikers in Algonquin National Park</imageCaption>

What are the issues affecting travelers in Mexico? Read the latest travel warnings and alerts.

https://www.worldnomads.com

How safe are Mexico's border towns now?

Travel to Mexico does not come without risk and we encourage you to take precautions to ensure your safety. The US State Department lists Mexico as a Level 3 risk for the country overall, advising “exercise increased caution”. Some parts of Mexico have Level 4 advisories, including Colima state, Guerrero state, Michoacán state and Sinaloa state due to crime, as well as Tamaulipas state due to crime and kidnapping.

Of the Mexican states listed as Level 4 due to crime and/or kidnapping, only one of them (Tamaulipas) is on the US border. Some other border states (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Sonora) are at a Level 3.

Violence is largely confined to a few areas thanks to the efforts of local authorities, with only the occasional incident occurring near tourist spots. If you participate in the drug trade, the risk to your safety increases considerably.

Tijuana and San Diego Border Closure – November 2018

US authorities have closed the major border control point of San Ysidro between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, United States, turning away all vehicles and pedestrians. Thousands of migrants and refugees have been making their way from Central America towards the US to seek asylum from poverty, political persecution and violence only to be met with tear gas launched by US authorities.

San Ysidro is one of the busiest border crossings with nearly 100,000 people and vehicles heading north each day from Mexico.

Further demonstrations are also planned for both sides of the border in days to come.

Please check with authorities for more information, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation. Failure to comply with directives from government authorities will result in you not being covered by travel insurance.

Hurricane Willa – October 2018

Hurricane Willa gained strength off Mexico's Pacific coast on Sunday and has become a major Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185kph). The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) has reported that Will could reach Category 4 status (sustained wind speed between 130-156 mph (209-251kph)) before making an estimated landfall on Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Vicente is also tracking from the south towards the same region, however, meteorologists have reported that Willa is likely to prevent Vicente from reaching hurricane status. Both systems will bring torrential rain, damaging winds, landslides, storm surges, and flooding.

A hurricane watch has been posted for between San Blas and Mazatlan, however, the systems could also impact popular spots such as Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita, with Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo to experience strong winds from Hurricane Willa. Weather reports indicate that Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa states will experience significant rainfall which could lead to flash flooding and landslides.

Travelers are advised to listen to local news, heed all warnings and directives from local authorities.

Security Alert, Playa del Carmen - 7th March 2018

Security Alert, Playa del Carmen – 7 March, 2018

The US State Department has issued a travel warning after receiving information about a security threat in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. While there is no indication that American tourists are being specifically targeted, the agency urges travelers to exercise increased caution due to violent crime, as well as a recent explosion on a tourist ferry. They suggest the following actions:

Be aware of your surroundings.

Purchase travel insurance that specifically covers you in Mexico and includes medical evacuation insurance.

Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance.

The Canadian State Department has also issued an alert urging Canadian citizens to exercise a high degree of caution when traveling in Mexico.

NOTE: Two days later on 9th March the State Department downgraded the alert and also narrowed the area of concern to five neighborhoods bordered by Avenida Benito Juarez, 50 Avenida Sur (Highway 307), and Calle 34 Norte. The neighborhoods are: Centro, Calica, Gonzalo Guerrero, Quintas del Carmen, and the Villas del Carmen neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen.

This area encompasses several popular tourist attractions including; the 3D Museum of Wonders, Riviera Grand Casino, The Beach Aquarium, The Grand Hyatt (along with several other hotels), and Walmart.

The ferries to Cozumel leave from a terminal just one block south of this area.

How to survive a hurricane

How to Survive a Hurricane

The absolutely best way to survive a hurricane is to avoid one. Get away from it, but if you make the decision to leave make that decision early. Don't leave it until the last minute because you may find yourself caught without proper shelter.

If you decide to stay and "ride it out", it's advisable to get to an authorized shelter.

Have extra supplies on <g class="gr_ gr_152 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="152" data-gr-id="152">hand</g> such as non-perishable food, clean drinking water, a half-gallon of water per person/per day (enough for a couple of days), and prescription drugs.

Beware of downed power lines and gas leaks.

Stay away from heavily damaged areas.

Listen to your radio for instructions.

Kissing bugs

Fire, bullet and driver ants

Fleas

Ticks

Tsetse flies

Asian giant hornet

Kissing bugs

Where: These nocturnal bloodsuckers are a problem throughout the Americas, from the United States to Argentina.

How they bug you: Kissing bugs can carry Chagas disease, which may produce symptoms like fever, fatigue, rashes, diarrhea and vomiting, and lead to heart and intestinal complications decades later. About 14,000 people die each year from Chagas disease.

How to protect yourself: Kissing bugs are found in old, rural, substandard dwellings, so look for streaks of feces on the walls and check cracks and crevices for signs of their whitish, pinkish eggs. If you think you have been bitten - it's usually painless and occurs around the mouth or eyes - DO NOT rub the bite. The parasite that causes Chagas disease is in the bugs' poop, not its saliva, so carefully wash the area to prevent the feces from getting into the puncture wound. If you think you've been infected, see a doctor.

Fire, bullet and driver ants

Where: Fire ants - United States, South America, China and Australia; bullet ants - rainforests of Central and South America; driver ants - Africa and tropical Asia.

How they bug you: These little buggers can inflict some serious pain. In fact fire and bullet ants get their names from what their stings feel like. Fire ant stings leave a painful, irritable bump which can easily become infected, and the venom can be fatal to those with allergies, so be sure to carry an epinephrine injector if you fall in that category.

How to protect yourself: Avoid them - don't disturb ant hills, wear high socks or long pants when hiking, immediately brush them off before they have a chance to deliver a sting or bite.

Fleas

Where: Just about anywhere that isn't super cold or super hot.

How they bug you: While they're mostly just a nuisance, fleas can spread bacterial and viral diseases, including the plague. Their bites can also cause an allergic reaction, while scratching your bites can lead to infections.

How to protect yourself: In wilderness areas, use an insect repellent (20-30 percent DEET) and/or permethrin-treated clothing; wear closed-toe shoes; don't feed or touch wildlife, particularly squirrels and other rodents; don't pitch tents near rodent burrows or possible rodent habitats like woodpiles or dense brush. Calamine lotion, ice or cold water can help relieve the itching of flea bites.

Ticks

Where: They like countries with warm, humid conditions, but you'll find them anywhere you find deer.

How they bug you: Tick-borne illnesses include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, African tick bite fever, encephalitis, and paralysis. Yeah, they're nasty.

How to protect yourself: Like flea defense (above), use DEET insect repellent and permethrin-treated clothing. Bathe or shower as soon as you can after being in a tick-infested area and give yourself a thorough inspection. Give your gear the once-over, too, in case there's an unwanted hitchhiker. To remove a tick, use tweezers to grab it as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Then clean the area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub or soap and water. DO NOT crush the tick with your fingers.

A tick. Photo credit: iStock

Tsetse flies

Where: Sub-Saharan Africa.

How they bug you: Not just the figment of screenwriters' imaginations, African sleeping sickness is a parasitic disease spread by the tsetse fly. It causes fatigue, fever, headaches and body aches; if not treated, it can be fatal.

How to protect yourself: Keep skin covered with neutral-colored, medium weight clothing (the flies are attracted to bright and dark colors and can bite through thin fabric). Use insect repellent and permethrin-treated clothing. Stay in screened or air-conditioned rooms.

A tsetse fly. Photo credit: iStock

Asian giant hornet

Where: Eastern Asia, particularly rural Japan.

How they bug you: Nearly 2 inches in length, with a 3-inch wingspan, and quarter inch-long stingers, these bad girls (the male drones lack a stinger) can deliver a heavy dose of venom. Dozens of people are killed each year by the hornets.

How to protect yourself: You can't outrun these behemoths, so if you are attacked, DO NOT run. They like the thrill of a moving target so crouch low to the ground and try to cover up. They don't usually sting without reason, though, so stay away from their nest.

<imageAttribution>iStock/BallBall14	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>506503992	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Fire ants meeting on a banana leaf</imageCaption>

Safety tips for women, areas to be a little more careful, and nightlife safety advice for travelers in San Francisco.

https://www.worldnomads.com

On this densely populated peninsula on the west coast of the United States, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the bright lights and big crowds, so try to be mindful of your surroundings at all times. San Francisco is the sum of its many diverse neighborhoods, and with a little precaution there’s no reason travelers should limit their exploration to Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf.

Local insider Elena Valeriote shares her top tips on staying safe for first-timers visiting San Francisco.

How to stay safe in San Francisco

Safety for women in San Francisco

Nightlife tips for San Francisco

How to stay safe in San Francisco

The Tenderloin has a well-earned reputation as the most sketchy area of San Francisco, specifically near the intersection of the streets Turk and Taylor, where a large population of homeless people have settled. It's pretty close to the Union Square tourist precinct, so be mindful of where you're wandering. You'll encounter pan-handling but mostly it's unlikely you'll experience anything more than some minor harrassment, but as always, be aware that mental illness is common among the homeless (and is often the cause of the homelessness, more's the pity), so be prepared for, and avoid, erratic behaviour.

Union Square is a bustling shopping district located in Downtown San Francisco. During the day, this area can be extremely crowded, and pickpockets the world over love a crowded space. Don’t keep wallets or expensive electronic devices where they can be easily stolen.

Religious fanatics often solicit converts with the aid of microphones near the central mall, but don’t let their loud, sometimes offensive speeches provoke you. A quieter, non-aggressive band of people also tends to linger around Union Square with Free Hugs signs and you’ll meet plenty of enthusiastic activists with clipboards. All of these people may be well intentioned, but if you want to be left alone just avoid eye contact and keep walking.

Safety for women traveling in San Francisco

Safety in San Francisco is about using your common sense, not being fearful. Be aware of your surroundings and your belongings like you would at home and anywhere else.

Like in any city around the world, it's best to take care if traveling alone at night. It's easy enough to grab a taxi or rideshare to get to where you are going.

Nightlife tips for San Francisco

Downtown San Francisco is the hub of city nightlife where you’ll find most of the popular bars and clubs. Just east of the Montgomery BART station, you’ll find plenty of options.

The city’s literary history lends itself well to the hip, bookish vibe at Local Edition, a bar decorated with typewriters

Just around the block, modern mixology meets Hemingway-chic at Novela Bar

Be forewarned, drinks are expensive in San Francisco. If you go in a large group, take advantage of deals like cocktail pitchers

The North Beach or Mission neighborhoods are popular alternate nightlife hubs for those that want to venture outside Downtown

The gay bars of the Castro district are open to anyone who sets out to paint the town red – or all the colors of the rainbow

If you’re hoping to find some cheaper options try visiting the Marina, Richmond or Sunset districts. (In the latter two, you can also find some great Asian food).

Cars and freeway safety

Money and credit cards

For some foreigners, Los Angeles means Hollywood and Hollywood means glamour; however, Hollywood is a relatively small neighborhood in the large city of Los Angeles and (to the dismay of some tourists) L.A. is not always glamorous.

Hollywood Boulevard, known for the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, Dolby Theatre (current venue for the Oscars) and TCL Chinese Theatre can be overwhelming with the hustle and bustle of people. The boulevard has become somewhat of a hotspot for homeless folk as a result so be prepared to receive requests or hassled for money.

Take caution when walking the streets as you will be approached by shady folk trying to sell you tours to the Hollywood sign and celebrities homes.

Los Angeles crime and places to avoid

Tourists should do their best to avoid Skid Row, an area of Downtown Los Angeles about four square miles across, positioned where Downtown meets Little Toyko and the Arts District.

Skid Row

With several thousand homeless people settled in the streets, many suffering from mental illnesses, addiction and other health issues, any traveller who stumbles across Skid Row is likely to feel uncomfortable. There aren’t any signs designating the boundaries of Skid Row, but it’s recognizable by the presence of makeshift homes in the form of tattered tents and cardboard boxes. While most homeless people and panhandlers in the area won’t aggressively approach you, it’s best to keep at a distance.

Skid Row is not far from many popular destinations, including the STAPLES center (home of the Lakers basketball team) and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, so it’s fairly easy wander into the area unintentionally.

Keep in mind that taking out an expensive phone to call a cab may put you in a more vulnerable position.

If you're driving it's advisable not to park around here.

South Central

Travelers should maintain a similar sense of caution if they travel through South Los Angeles, also known as South Central. South L.A. is topographically and culturally a large part of the city, but it is not an ideal destination for visitors.

This part of Los Angeles is known for gang violence, famously between the rival gangs known as the Bloods and the Crips. In the past, gang members identified themselves by colors (red for the Bloods, blue for the Crips), but this conspicuous practice has decreased for the most part in recent years. If you crossed paths with someone with a gang affiliation, you probably wouldn’t know it and shouldn’t feel threatened. Gang violence is more likely to be aimed towards rivals than tourists; however, it is still advisable to spend time elsewhere in L.A. and avoid wearing red or blue in South Los Angeles as a precaution.

L.A. at night

As in any big city, it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings and avoid drawing attention to yourself, especially when exploring Los Angeles at night.

It’s tempting to pass the time waiting for public transit by texting a friend or scrolling through social media when you’re alone, but don’t put yourself in a position where it’s easy for someone to run by and snatch your phone out of your hand.

Safety for women in L.A

It’s unrealistic and unnecessary to suggest women shouldn’t explore the city alone or after dark in Los Angeles, however there are certain precautions that should be taken.

Some guidebooks suggest that women buy pepper-spray, which is legal in California, but unfortunately pepper-spray can be out of reach in an emergency situation, or worse, it can be used against the victim.

Catcalling is not uncommon, but most men won’t aggressively pursue women who refuse to give them attention.

If you’re a woman travelling alone, it is advisable to avoid taking public transportation at night, but if you do, keep a reliable friend informed of your evening plans.

On a similar note, if you’re utilizing Uber or Lyft, share your trip details with someone so they know where you are and by what time you should’ve arrived at your destination.

L.A. nightlife safety tips

Most nightlife takes place in Downtown L.A., where you’ll find plenty of bars and clubs clustered within a fair walking distance.

Cool alternatives can be found in Silverlake or Koreatown, but you’ll need some insider knowledge to ferret them out and plenty of confidence to blend in with the hipsters.

With a classic flair for the secret and the scandalous, speakeasies have been popping up in Los Angeles over the past few years. One such speakeasy, The Lock and Key, has gained popularity in Koreatown, but it’s up to you to figure out how to get in. The entrance is a black wall covered in a variety of doorknobs and only one of them will allow you to enter.

A word of warning: drinks are pretty expensive in L.A. – the average cocktail will set you back about $12 and ordering a glass of wine or a bottle beer is often nearly as much. But, thanks to the mixology trend you’ll find unique flavors you won’t want to miss and it would be a shame to ignore California wines and craft brews.

Cars and freeway safety in L.A

The people of Los Angeles are infamously obsessed with their cars. This reputation, while unflattering, is mostly founded on truth. In their defense, Los Angeles is about five hundred square miles of land laced with freeways, making it impossible to cover it all on foot.

Ridesharing services, like Uber and Lyft are the best option for exploring L.A. These services are cheaper, more efficient than a taxi and less stressful than renting a car.

Not only will you save money on parking and gas, but also you don’t have to worry about navigating the city’s horrendous traffic and complex system of freeways.

The parking signs are universally incomprehensible and the fines are hefty.

If you do choose to drive, don’t be alarmed by aggressive drivers. You may think yourself the victim of road rage, but everyone is just trying to get to their destination as quickly as possible.

Speaking of which, rush hour in Los Angeles is not just an hour – it’s most of the day. If you’re travelling any time between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. be prepared to sit in gridlock for a while and give yourself an extra hour to reach your destination.

Money and credit cards in L.A

Credit cards are almost universally acceptable for shopping and restaurants.

Cash may be necessary or simply more convenient when it comes to valet parking, taxis, ridesharing, food carts and tipping. The general tipping rate at restaurants is 18%, but some food establishments have included a surcharge on all receipts that takes care of the waiter, so be sure to double-check the final cost of your meal.

Shopping, a California state tax of 7.25% will automatically be added to the price tag.

<imageAttribution>Yoav Aziz on Unsplash	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>fWm9NPf4f5o	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Unsplash	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Santa Monica Boardwalk, Los Angeles, United States</imageCaption>

Portland is renowned for its vibrant culture and progressive values, but crime has been a problem in recent years.
Current crime statistics and areas to avoid

Protests and civil unrest

Safety for women and LGBTQ+ travelers

Parking and local regulations

Drug laws in Portland

Current crime statistics and areas to avoid

Portland remains relatively safe for tourists, but vigilance is key. The city developed a reputation for danger in the summer of 2020 when protests turned into violent clashes. Crime rates ticked up further in 2021-2022, but assaults, thefts, and vandalism have declined over the past two years. Smash-and-grab thefts are still common, though, especially in high-traffic areas. Always secure your belongings and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight in your car.

Bike theft continues to be a concern. Portland’s strong bike culture means that while biking is popular, bike theft rates have also increased. Ensure that any bike you rent is equipped with high-quality locks and follow all security recommendations from the rental company.

Homelessness is an ongoing issue in Portland, with visible encampments in areas like Old Town and along the waterfront. While most interactions are non-threatening, exercise caution and trust your instincts if a situation seems uncomfortable.

Neighborhoods to be wary of:

• Hazelwood-Mill Park: This area, near the Gateway Transit Center, has the highest rate of violent crime in Portland. It’s best to use caution and avoid this area, especially after dark.

• West Burnside: While central and convenient, the area near the waterfront can get seedy at night. Drug use is a problem in this neighborhood. West Burnside also has a high incidence of car accidents involving pedestrians.

• Chinatown and the Lloyd District: Popular with tourists, these neighborhoods are generally safe but are known for occasional petty theft and property crimes.

Protests and civil unrest

Portland is known for its active civic engagement, and demonstrations related to various social and political issues are a common sight. While most protests are peaceful, they can lead to temporary road closures and disruptions. Stay informed about local events and avoid areas where large crowds are gathering to ensure your safety.

Safety for women and LGBTQ+ travelers

Women’s safety: Portland is generally safe for women traveling alone. However, it's wise to remain cautious, particularly at night and in less populated areas. Use ride-share services or well-lit public transportation if traveling after dark and stay aware of your surroundings.

LGBTQ+ safety: Portland is considered one of the more LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the United States. The city celebrates its diversity with numerous events and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals. Still, it’s always best to stay alert and practice the same level of caution as you would in any unfamiliar city.

Parking and local regulations

Portland's parking enforcement was relatively lax in recent years, but the city is staffing up on parking enforcement officers, so adhere to parking regulations to avoid fines. Be mindful of no-parking zones and expired meters, even if just making a quick stop.

Drug laws in Portland

In 2020, Oregon passed a measure that decriminalized drug possession for personal use. But a new 2024 law rolls that back. Getting caught with small amounts of hard drugs (such as heroin or cocaine) is now punishable by up to 180 days in jail.

However, adults over the age of 21 can buy, use, and possess recreational marijuana – but there are limits to how much you can possess, it can’t be used in public places, and it needs to be purchased from OLCC-licensed retailers. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

<imageAttribution>iStock/AndreyKrav	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>529694507	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Famous old town Portland sign</imageCaption>

Our insider Zoe shares her tips on scams, subway safety, crowd control, drink spiking and more.

https://www.worldnomads.com

After numerous trips to New York, I’ve always avoided the Big Apple’s perils by using my common sense along with some simple precautions.

Subway Safety

Neighborhood Watch

Crowd Control

Drink Dangers

Scam Alerts

Subway Safety

Boarding your first subway train can feel a bit daunting particularly during peak hour. While you may be curious about the people around you, rule number one: zero eye contact. A downward gaze is an unspoken custom and by not adhering to it, you’re advertising yourself as a visitor to opportunistic crooks.

It’s safer to ride the most-crowded subway cars - once the subway is in motion; it’s difficult to extract yourself from unsafe situations. Remain vigilant with your belongings too, especially when you’re packed in like a sardine. I skip the subway after 11pm as I’ve experienced more anti-social behavior late at night. However if you do need to ride it at night, always sit near the conductor’s carriage which is in the middle of the train. Avoid sleeping or being tipsy on the subway as well.

Neighborhood Watch

The gentrification of neighborhoods has meant that somewhere like Brooklyn’s Greenpoint was off limits on my first visit nine years ago. Now, it’s an up-and-coming hipster ‘hood. Things change at a breakneck pace.

NYC is now one of the US’s safest cities, though I’d currently recommend caution visiting East New York, Mott Haven, and Upper Harlem, particularly at night.

Crowd Control

With more than 60 million tourists a year, crowds are unavoidable. It doesn’t mean you should skip Times Square, a concert at Madison Square Gardens or bustling Midtown; but do keep your wits about you. Pickpockets are the main threat, so keep your belongings in a shoulder bag or backpack fitted with pickpocket deterrents.

Drink Dangers

Hitting up a bar in the Lower East Side or Bushwick is as much as a rite of passage as walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. With urban vibes and hilarious bartenders, NYC bars offer boisterous fun. But, there are safety risks if you’re not on your guard. A Manhattan bartender friend has noticed a surge in drink spiking and a Staten Island bar recently began serving drinks with lids after reported cases. No matter how hot the face (or accent), buy your own drinks, keep them covered, and speak up if you’re uncomfortable.

Scam Alerts

As a seasoned traveler, you’re probably clued up that those costumed-characters at Times Square are hustling for a quick buck, but where else can you lose your cash?

Stay alert when buying super-discounted tickets to Broadway shows, they often turn out to be fake, duplicates or even for the wrong show. Watch for a comedy club scam where you’re held to ransom by its extortionate two-drink minimum policy. The Staten Island ferry is free, no matter what that official-looking dude says. And, even when exhausted, avoid those pedicab rides – their ‘surprise’ pricing can sometimes cost more than a limo.

<imageAttribution>GettyImages/Tetra Images	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights></haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

For adventure travelers, the island paradise of Hawaii has a large variety of activities to suit all tastes. Here are our tips to make sure your time is a safe and memorable one.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Each of the four major islands – Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai – offers a unique kind of beauty and opportunities for adventure. From seeing active lava flows and hiking through bamboo forests to hidden waterfalls, to scuba diving with manta rays or stargazing from the top of a volcano. While Hawaii remains one of the most enchanting island destinations in the world, this destination is not for the faint of heart when it comes to exploration, and more specifically, safe exploration.

Ocean safety

Anticipate your needs

Designate an adventure buddy

If there's no path, there's a reason

Don't selfie your way into oblivion

Beware of flash flooding

Enjoy the experiences safely

1. Ocean safety

For centuries, Hawaiians have held a deep respect for the ocean and it's something that every traveler should also do. Many ocean currents can not be easily seen from the shore so it's important to not swim or kayak alone. Calm water is not always safe water to swim in.

Hawaii has hundreds of stunning beaches, but throw in strong rip currents and shore breaks and that can present challenges for anyone unaccustomed to swimming there. Makena "Big" Beach on Maui has a strong shore break and many visitors are seriously injured there every year, despite the many warning signs posted on the beach and vocalized by lifeguards. To avoid potential accidents, obey any warning signs, spend at least a couple of minutes watching the waves and other swimmers in the area before jumping in yourself. Remember to duck under large waves instead of attempting to jump over them. When in doubt, don't go out especially if you have been drinking heavily. Wherever possible, swim at a patrolled beach location where lifeguards are available.

Rip currents are responsible for carrying many swimmers out from the shoreline and it's important if you do get caught in one to remain calm and wave to attract attention for rescue. Do not fight the rip.

If swimming at an unpatrolled beach, always remain calm and swim parallel to the beach. Head towards the breaking waves.

There are many great spots where you can jump off/dive into the water however it pays to check the depth or find out where the safe spots are. Many locals and visitors suffer spinal injuries annually from diving into shallow water. If the water is unclear or murky, don't do it.

Portuguese Man 'O War or blue bottles can often be found at beaches, so it pays to watch your step. But if you are in the water and you get stung by their long tentacles, carefully remove any remaining tentacles from your skin and wash the area in hot water (113°F or 45°C). Seek medical treatment.

Sharks are often seen around Hawaii, but you're more likely to end up in a car accident on the way to the beach than being bitten. You can stay safe by being in the water during dawn or dusk, or during signs of baitfish activity including birds dive bombing to feed and swimming at a patrolled beach.

Jellyfish can often frequent beach areas around the time of a full moon and often there will be signs located in areas which get a heavy influx. If you do get stung, wash the area with freshwater and if you have further troubles e.g breathing, pain, call 911 for medical assistance.

A good rule of thumb for visiting blowholes is if the ground is wet, don't stand there. Blowholes are the human equivalent of bug zappers - as tempting as it is to get as close as possible, don't do it. They're amazing to watch in action, but we guarantee you absolutely don't want to experience what it's like to get sucked into one. Keep a safe viewing distance by sticking to dry ground.

2. Anticipate your needs

When setting out on a full day adventure, make sure to pack everything you're likely to need and want, including plenty of drinking water, snacks, protective clothing, proper footwear, a map, and more. Make sure to tell other members of your party (or your accommodation manager, if traveling solo) of your whereabouts and general planned time of return, should anything go wrong. While the chance of serious danger or accidents is small, the island's many nooks and crannies can make it difficult to pinpoint missing individuals when certain areas can't be initially ruled out.

3. Designate an adventure buddy

Most accidents, especially in the ocean, occur when people get separated from the group or decide to go out on their own. Be sure to designate a partner when swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and even paddle boarding and kayaking, and keep a special watch on both younger and older members of your group. While joining tours with experienced, professional tour guides can offer reassurance, be sure to accurately report any vital information, including serious health conditions pertaining to you or any member of your group, before the tour begins.

4. If there's no path, there's a reason

If ocean sports aren't your cup of tropical adventure, no worries. Each Hawaiian island has a variety of land activities and hiking trails, perfect for all fitness levels. And while Hawaii is an amazing place to hike due to the many available microclimates, scenic views and the fact that there's zero poisonous snakes, it's still recommended to stick to the worn trails and paths during your adventure.

First, hiking too far into uncharted territory may cause confusion when trying to find your way back out - more than a few groups of people have had to be helicoptered out - and also, you could end up accidentally trespassing on private property without knowing it. Stick to the trails, and you'll be treated to otherworldly, picture-perfect views without putting yourself in unnecessary danger.

5. Don't selfie your way into oblivion

Once upon a time, sharks were the major concern when visiting the Hawaiian Islands. Today, you're not only more likely to die by way of falling coconut, but also selfie'ing yourself right off the side of a dang cliff. While we encourage you to capture the beauty of your next trip to paradise, make sure your waterfall selfie isn't the last one you ever take.

6. Beware of flash flooding

In Hawaii, a relaxing swim at a remote waterfall can quickly turn into a scary encounter or close call with a surprise flash flood. Since heavy rainfall is common in certain areas of each island it’s wise to keep an eye on weather forecasts, and avoid long hikes along waterways if rainfall is likely. In the event of flash flooding, move to higher ground as quickly as possible, and contact emergency personnel for assisted evacuation.

7. Enjoy the experiences safely

Perhaps more than other island destinations, Hawaii is the place to push your adventurous side to new levels. This doesn't mean, however, you have to do so while putting yourself in danger. Paragliding off the side of the world's largest dormant volcano, outrigger canoeing with humpback whales, ziplining above lush valleys, helicoptering alongside the world's steepest sea cliffs, rappelling down waterfalls, windsurfing at one of the world's best windsurfing beaches, scuba diving with sharks, and many more opportunities exist with a proper guide. There's simply no need to attempt to set a new time record stand up paddle boarding between the islands. Know your limits.

While many of these warnings are good advice for any travel destination, Hawaii's powerful waves, wind and array of thrilling outdoor activities make it a particularly accident-prone vacation destination. Keep your island travel smarts about you, and have the vacation of a lifetime. Here are our top safety tips for your trip to Mexico's Pacific Coast.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Mexico’s Pacific coast, from Mazatlan, in Sinaloa, to the state of Oaxaca, in the southwest of the country, has a lot to offer tourists. But how safe is this stretch of more than 1,200 miles (1,930km)? Here's the latest information.

Is Mazatlan safe to visit?

Is Sayulita safe to visit?

Is Puerto Vallarta safe to visit?

Is Acapulco safe to visit?

Is Oaxaca safe to visit?

Is Mazatlan safe to visit?

Though it’s in the state of Sinaloa, which gives its name to the oldest and most powerful criminal organization in Mexico, Mazatlan is the only part of the state that doesn’t come with a government travel warning.

With 12 miles (20km) of sandy beaches, the city was, like Acapulco, known for its glamour in the mid-20th century, before becoming package-tourist fodder. Since then, it’s been overhauled, its historic “tropical neoclassical” center restored, and good times – as well as fine dining and vibrant nightlife – are being had again.

There is no reason why cautious, vigilant travelers should not have a safe stay in Mazatlan. Cartels are not in the business of costing themselves money. Do bear in mind these few rules, however, which apply all the way down the Pacific coast: acquire some Spanish; drink bottled water; plan your nights out; don’t make a show of your valuables; avoid packed buses (rapid transit systems are safer and quicker); don’t hail cars in the street, but Uber is fine; book accommodation through a reputable platform; keep a list of emergency numbers; hire a guide for tours outside the city limits; and watch out for scams – overcharging street and beach vendors, ATM skimming, and fake police officers.

Is Sayulita safe to visit?

The Nayarit Riviera, almost 200 miles (322km) of coastline from San Blas in the north to Nuevo Vallarta near the Jalisco border, draws a lot of surfers, and Sayulita, with excellent surf camps and all-level breaks, is their capital.

Formerly sleepy and recently designated a Pueblo Magico (a place notable for its beauty, historical significance or cultural import), Sayulita is a small town with the usual growing pains that come with sudden popularity (relatively sudden, anyway, since the mid-90s), but it is one of the safest spots in one of the safest states in Mexico.

Reminding people of Puerto Vallarta in the 60s – tourists often outnumber the locals, and golf carts are the vehicle of choice – Sayulita’s lack of development is the main threat to your safety. Many businesses don’t accept cards, so you’ll need to carry cash. Use bank ATMS, avoid withdrawing at night, and wear a pickpocket-proof money belt.

Is Puerto Vallarta safe to visit?

Mexico’s Pacific coast doesn’t get much more desirable than “Vallarta” as the number of expats, retirees, and second-homers there will testify. An LGBTQ+-friendly destination, dubbed “the San Francisco of Mexico”, in terms of drinking, dining, clubbing, public art, and water sports the city wants for nothing, and it has its own airport and cruise ship berths too.

Generally impressively safe, where Vallarta poses dangers – irritations, at least – it’s where it’s been a victim of its own success. After you pass through customs at the airport, you’ll have to head through “the shark tank”, which is where timeshare sales reps shoal. To describe their tactics as heavy-handed – free tequila shots, margaritas, offers of breakfast – is to not experience the onslaught up close. Though it’s possible to milk the reps for spa passes, massages, and whale-watching excursions, you are better off not engaging – it is doubtful you’ll get one over on people who are prepared to lie for their living.

Is Acapulco safe to visit?

Acapulco is the largest beach and balneiro resort in Mexico, but since its heyday in the 60s, when Elvis Presley filmed there and Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor holidayed, it has gone the wrong kind of loco.

After attracting all the wrong headlines for its top-ten placing on the league table of dangerous locales – for murder, abduction, and extortion, in particular – Acapulco had started to recover. Domestic tourists were returning, even if the convention centers weren’t full of international visitors. But the devastation wrought by Hurricane Otis in October 2023 has reopened the door to cartels vying for control of the city and its criminal economies.

Acapulco is a crucial entry point for cocaine en route from South America to consumer markets in the United States, and the Jalisco Cartel New Generation, Sinaloa Cartel groups, Familia Michoacana, and the Acapulco Independent Cartel all maintain a presence there. For now, I would leave the city to its own devices.

Is Oaxaca safe to visit?

Mexico’s fifth largest state may be one of its poorest, but it’s rich in diversity, both topographically and culturally – being home to 16 indigenous groups, each with its own customs, traditions and language.

It is also very safe, as it’s not cartel country – few contraband corridors run through the state’s forbidding landscapes: mountains, jungle and cacti-sentried scrubland.

Apart from the big waves at Playa Zicatela, the 2-mile (3.5km) beach at Puerto Escondido, Mexico’s best-known surfing spot (which has its own airport), the region is largely unmapped swell territory. That’s because it’s undeveloped. You can drive for hours on the 200 coast road and not pass a single town, but one dusty shoreline track later…

Upcoming surf towns include Manzunte, Zipolite, Barra de la Cruz, San Agustinillo, and Salina Cruz. Summer, from April when the southern swells start kicking off, is the peak season for surfing in Oaxaca, and winter is great for beginners. You should bear in mind, however, that the more remote the locale, the less likely it will come with warning signs or, traditionally, red flags. Every year, dozens of unsuspecting tourists fall prey to powerful undertows and rip currents – surfers are better equipped than swimmers to withstand the conditions, but the risks are very real.

The culture on the Pacific coast is laidback, and not averse to a party, so store your valuables, camera, and passport in a strongbox at your hotel/hostel and take just enough cash to see you through the night. Again, a money belt is your friend.
