Bike trails and parks in New Zealand

Plan your cycling gear

Weather in New Zealand

From sub-tropical forests to high alpine passes, cities to remote desert roads, New Zealand’s roads, tracks and trails have it all and bring a few unique challenges to prepare for. This guide is packed full of useful tips on how to stay safe whilst making the most of your cycling adventures in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Cycling on New Zealand roads

Before you begin any cycling journey, ensure your bike is in good mechanical order. If hiring a bike, this should be taken care of, but do a quick check of the brakes, tyre pressure, and basic set-up.

New Zealand’s roads vary considerably in terms of the quality of smooth surface, camber and shoulder space. Many roads are narrow and winding with no shoulder and often have large trucks and fast vehicles passing by – so it’s essential you’re confident riding on roads.

Knowing the road rules is key to staying safe. In New Zealand, helmets are compulsory, as are front and rear lights at night – and still a good idea during the day. Wear visible clothing and behave predictably, indicating clearly and in advance when turning and take the lane when appropriate.

Be aware that some New Zealand drivers and tourists are used to sharing the road with a different level of courtesy than you may be used to in other countries. Neither are they accustomed to the higher speeds possible by e-bikes. So, make yourself visible, allow room to pass when you can, and when planning your route, avoid major highways (riding on motorways is not permitted) and choose quieter roads where possible.

Potential hazards

Watch for train crossings, and always check both ways for trains, even if the crossing signals don’t indicate an imminent train. A unique feature of New Zealand roads that is a hazard for unfamiliar drivers and cyclists is one-lane bridges – be sure to check the right-of-way road signs on your approach. On some more remote roads, occasionally, one-lane bridges are also used by trains! In this instance, the give-way vigilance is even more important, and avoid letting your bike wheels slip into train track grooves that are sunken into the road, as your wheels can get stuck, and an abrupt stop could lead to some unplanned air travel.

Plan your route

If you’re planning your own cycling routes, make sure to calculate the distances between towns to understand where you can restock food and water. Be aware that in small towns, amenities may not be open after 5 pm and in some very small towns, there may be no shops or services. Plan to restock during the day and in larger towns. This is particularly pertinent to the Tour Aotearoa, a cycle route exploring the length of New Zealand from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

With just over 5 million people, New Zealand is less populated than many countries, so you can travel significant distances between places without seeing people or towns. Take tools and spare parts and make sure your bike is well maintained. Make sure you have enough food and water to cover the distances you plan to ride. For added peace of mind, let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be there, and always remember to provide an update when you reach your destination or if your plans change. If you get into trouble, get lost or need to know something, ask a local – Kiwis are a welcoming and friendly bunch and will almost always help you if they can.

Safety tips for cycling on rural roads

Be aware that many of Zealand’s rural roads are unsealed. Ensure you are confident riding on loose gravel that is sometimes rutted, pot-holed and articulated with occasional cattle grids. Be aware that sheep and cattle are often moved via rural roads, and be prepared to wait and let them pass.

Always respect road closures, even if this means you need to revise your planned route along the way. Road closures are often for reasons you could never anticipate. Roads may be impassable due to rockfall, slips, avalanches, flooding – you name it, it happens. In a tragic example recently in the South Island, mountain bikers ignored a road closure on a farm track cut into the side of a steep mountain where cattle were being moved. The oncoming bikes startled the cattle, some panicked and bolted over the cliff’s edge, perishing on the rocks below.

Bike trails and parks in New Zealand

To experience some of New Zealand’s countryside and wilderness by bike, you can plan day/multi-day rides via the many cycle trails and Great Rides. The Great Rides are 23 scenic bike trails spanning over 2,500 km throughout the North and South Islands.

For the Great Rides, check the Great Rides app/website and be sure to check distances, elevation profile, level of difficulty (the trails are graded) and estimated time the ride may take to prepare accordingly. (Some operators provide support with logistics/transport/accommodation for many of these.)

Trailforks is an excellent resource for bike trail info throughout New Zealand, listing all the information you could ever need to plan rides well-suited to your capability and fitness level. It’s always a good idea to check the trail conditions and see if there are any alerts/section closures. The gear checklist below will help you prepare for all types of riding.

The main tip to keep safe in the bike parks is to ride within your limits and wear protective gear – a full-face helmet, goggles, gloves, knee/elbow pads, and body armor if appropriate. Bike checks are essential when riding any gnarly terrain.

Plan your cycling gear

To help you plan, here’s a cycling safety gear checklist:

Clothes

Helmet

Gloves

Visible clothing

Wind/waterproof jacket

Sunglasses to protect your eyes from harsh sun and dust.

Emergency kit

First aid kit

Food for emergencies (gels, muesli /choc bars etc.)

Emergency blanket

Emergency shelter

Torch or headtorch (handy for repairs in low light or darkness).

Communication

Mobile phone

Battery bank for charging mobile phones in remote places

InReach or PLB (personal locator beacon) if riding in remote locations. If you don’t own one, consider investing or hiring.

Protection

Sunblock (the New Zealand sun is harsh)

Insect repellent (Sandflies are an issue in some remote places – check before you go and use repellent)

Knee and elbow pads if mountain biking.

Tools, equipment and spares

Tools: including tyre levers, bike pump, Allen keys, screwdriver, chain tool, and puncture repair kit.

Spares: including inner tube(s), chain quick-link, gear and brake cables where appropriate

Water bottle or hydration bladder

Bike lights – front and rear (headtorch may also be handy)

Maps. If you are riding remotely, it’s worth having a paper copy in case of flat batteries or lack of mobile coverage.

Chain oil

Duct tape – doesn’t have to be a whole roll, a short length wrapped around the body of your bike pump will suffice.

Zip ties

GPS functionality that works offline – e.g., downloadable maps or Topo maps that operate outside of mobile reception

Water purification tablets – helpful in the case of collecting water from a stream you can’t be sure is clean.

Ensure you know how to use your tools and fit spares before you ride. Even if you’re unsure, it’s worth carrying them as a helpful person on the route may be able to assist.

Because of the remoteness of many parts of NZ, it’s a good idea to ensure you know how to check that your bike is in good working order before each ride. Checks should include the following:

Tyres and wheels for signs of damage, wear and correct tyre pressure

    Wheels spin smoothly and straight

    The function of the gears

Brake pads and cables for wear

Bolts and bearings are not loose

Overall visual check of the bike.

Weather in New Zealand

Last but not least, when planning to ride safely in New Zealand, make sure you check the weather; it’s a case of constant vigilance is best! New Zealand’s climate can vary widely from north to south, and four seasons in one day can and does frequently happen in all regions. The weather can change extremely quickly and without warning, particularly in the alpine areas, so be prepared and ensure you are equipped for the conditions you may encounter.

<imageAttribution>Mike Hartley	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A cyclist overlooks a lake</imageCaption>

This small Pacific island nation draws snorkelers, scuba divers and beach lovers.

Climate and weather

Driving and getting around

Water sports in Fiji

Crime in Fiji

Staying healthy in Fiji

Drugs and alcohol in Fiji

LGBTQ+ and women's safety in Fiji

Climate, weather and natural disasters

Fiji experiences cyclones (usually between November and April), and resulting flooding and landslides, potentially cutting power, disrupting flights and boats, and blocking roads.

In the event of a cyclone always follow evacuation plans at your accommodation and listen to any government advice regarding use of shelters and other information.

Earthquakes and tsunamis can also occur, the latter often happening because of the former. If a tsunami warning is given, move to higher ground immediately. If you are caught up in a serious event, contact family and friends to let them know where you are, listen to local media for information, follow government advice, and carry your passport and other valuable papers in a waterproof bag.

Driving and getting around

Fiji’s road system can be a bit unreliable with some roads in poor condition, and often lacking in signage and street lighting. Pedestrian crossings may not exist and animals often use the road, too. Stick to main roads, avoid driving at night, and always carry your driver’s license.

As well as hire cars, taxis are available – always use licensed operators – and there are licensed minibusses with yellow number plates.

If traveling by boat between islands, make sure it is a licensed operator and that there is well-maintained safety equipment on board. Never travel on an overloaded vessel.

Water sports in Fiji

This island nation offers a huge number of activities to be enjoyed off its sandy shores. It’s important, however, to be aware of rips and tides and to follow any warning signs on beaches.

Only scuba dive with an accredited operator with well-maintained equipment and proper training. Dive within safe limits and follow all instructions. Fiji only has one decompression chamber, and it is not always available.

Crime in Fiji

Crime in Fiji is usually petty and opportunistic, usually committed at night and in urban tourist areas.

Credit card fraud and card skimming are not uncommon. Protect your PIN and use ATMs in banks or hotels. Check your card statement for signs of fraud. Only carry the cash you need for a night out, keep car windows up and car doors locked.

Staying healthy in Fiji

In a medical emergency, hospitals usually need to see evidence of medical insurance, and an up-front deposit.

Avoid drinking tap water unless it has been boiled or treated. Don’t use ice cubes, and only eat food you know has been freshly prepared.

Zika and dengue fever are present in Fiji – avoid these and other mosquito-borne illnesses by wearing long, loose clothing and using insect repellent.

Drugs and alcohol in Fiji

Don't use or carry illegal drugs. Penalties include prison sentences, even for possessing small amounts of drugs.

You can be arrested for being drunk and disorderly. You can be fined and detained if you cause damage to property or assault police officers.

It's illegal to be under the influence of alcohol while you're at an airport or on a plane.

Kava, a traditional Pacific region drink, can be a health risk.

It can be dangerous if it reacts with alcohol, prescription medication, including antidepressants

If you're intoxicated, police may detain you as you arrive.

LGBTQ+ and women’s safety in Fiji

Same-sex relationships are legal, but some locals don't accept them. Consider limiting public displays of affection, especially in rural areas.

Fiji is generally a safe place for women travelers. If you’re traveling alone, you may attract stares or whistles, but most Fijian men are friendly and helpful. Always be cautious traveling to remote places alone.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / Didier Marti	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

What are the issues affecting travelers in French Polynesia?
Anyone who is not a French national must purchase travel insurance that covers associated costs for coronavirus (COVID-19)

All visitors must self-test for COVID-19 four days after arrival.

A destructive category five tropical cyclone (the highest category) is expected to hit Fiji's two main islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) early on Friday morning. The country's National Disaster Management Office reports that 600,000 people are in its path. Yasa is carrying winds of 125mph (200kph) with gusts of 175mph (280kph). The storm is expected to disrupt electricity and freshwater supplies. Everyone is advised to head to evacuation centers and listen to all advice.

Cyclone Mona - January 2019

Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Mona is currently tracking towards the Fiji Islands from the north, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. There is a high risk of flash flooding and landslides.

The Fiji Meteorological Service reports the slow-moving system is due to pass over Fiji sometime between this weekend (5th-6th) and Monday 7th before it heads towards Tonga and Niue.

There is a cyclone alert for Vanua Levu, Viti Levu, Tavanui and other neighboring small islands. The Yasawa Islands and Mamanuca Group are on a gale watch.

Fiji Airways has canceled several domestic flights between the islands, if you are traveling inter-island it's best to give them a call. If you are flying to/from Fiji, contact your airline for more information in case your flight is impacted by the cyclone.

If you are in Fiji, please check with authorities for safety information, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation. Failure to comply with directives from government authorities means you won't be covered by travel insurance.

Dengue Fever epidemic in New Caledonia - January 2019

Dengue Fever epidemic in New Caledonia - January 2019

New Caledonian health authorities have declared a dengue fever epidemic, affecting the entire Pacific island nation. The majority of cases are located in the metropolitan area and surrounds of the capital, Noumea.

It's vital that travelers take all necessary precautions to protect themselves from mosquito borne diseases aside from dengue fever and make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance.

Dengue fever, if left untreated can evolve into dengue hemorrhagic fever which can be fatal. It's important that as soon as you feel unwell to seek medical assistance to make sure you get treated as early as possible and for the right condition as some mosquito borne diseases can have similar symptoms.

Other diseases such as zika and chikungunya have also been present in New Caledonia, particuarly during the warmer and wetter months of the year (December - February).

Vaccinations for New Caledonia

Medical treatment in New Caledonia

Mosquito-borne diseases

Food and water borne disease

Natural hazards

Vaccinations for New Caledonia

The CDC and World Health Organization recommend travelers consider these vaccinations for New Caledonia:

Influenza

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)

Hepatitis A and B

Polio

Typhoid

Yellow fever

Meningitis

Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis)

Chickenpox

Shingles

Pneumonia.

Medical treatment in New Caledonia

If you do get sick or have an accident, the three hospitals on the main island, Grand Terre (the locals call it "Le Caillou" - The Rock), can treat routine ailments and handle most emergencies very well. But if you don't have travel insurance, expect to pay upfront – and it's not cheap.

If you require complex treatment you'll need to be evacuated to Australia.

Scuba diving is a popular activity all over New Caledonia, but there's only one hyperbaric (decompression) chamber in Noumea. If you're on an outer island, it's going to be a while before help arrives or you can be transferred to Grand Terre.

Mosquito-borne diseases

Dengue fever

Dengue fever is common in the warm and wet months of December to February. There's no vaccination available, so it's important to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Wear long, light loose-fitting clothing, apply insect repellent at all times of the day and make sure your room is mosquito-proof otherwise sleep under a mosquito net. If your room has a fan, sleep with that on.

Tip out any stagnant water you see sitting around your accommodation.

Chikungunya

This virus is transmitted by a daytime biting female mosquito – which means it's even more important to protect yourself from mosquito bites no matter what time of day it is.

Chikungunya is asymptomatic. If you are infected, you will begin to feel sick 3–12 days after the infected mosquito bite.

Food and water borne disease

Hygiene and sanitation standards are good in the resorts, they may be less so in outer islands. So the vast majority of visitors needn't be concerned about water-borne disease and parasites.

Tap water in Noumea and most resorts is safe to drink, however if you are elsewhere in the country, it's advised to boil or treat your water before consuming.

Food and water borne diseases such as typhoid and Hepatitis A are present in New Caledonia. You can avoid contracting these diseases by observing good personal hygiene practices and taking a few precautions with your food and drinks.

Cigatera seafood poisoning has been reported in the country.

Natural hazards

Tropical storms and cyclones (hurricanes) are common from November to April, but storms can happen at anytime. Because there is limited capacity to leave New Caledonia by commercial flight, you may need to ride it out. Your hotel will advise you on where to take shelter.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Mako photo	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>143950474	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Luengoni Beach on Lifou Island in New Caledonia</imageCaption>

What are the issues affecting travelers in Australia?

Severe weather conditions on Australia's east coast – February 2020

Australia was on alert for fires early this year, and now the attention has turned to severe weather systems moving across the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, plus a cyclone alert (which has since been downgraded) for the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

In New South Wales, the regions of Sydney, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains were soaked by between 200 and 400mm of rain from 9am Friday 7 February to 5pm Sunday 9 February. Emergency services responded to an incredibly high number of calls regarding flash flooding and landslides, and the wild weather caused transport delays in parts of the state.

Keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology for weather warnings and predicted rainfall, as heavy rainfall is expected to fall throughout the week.

Contact your travel provider if you are unsure how this may change your itinerary, and consider changing plans if any of your intended destinations have been affected by floods, or are expected to flood later this week.

The 2019-20 bushfire season in Australia

Australia has experienced an intense bushfire season. Fires have burnt 18.6 million hectares (72,000 square miles), destroyed more than 5,900 buildings and homes, and killed at least 34 people. The worst of the fires were experienced in the states of New South Wales, Victoria, Canberra and Queensland, but fires did happen across the country.

It's hard to grasp the scale of these fires, but it's important to note that while it looks like Australia is not safe to visit, it still is. The areas that were burning were mostly bushland – but the major cities of Australia are safe to visit, and so are many of the smaller towns along the coast. Now, more than ever, the towns that were affected by the fires are hoping visitors will return soon to get the communities back on their feet.

If you're setting off on an Australian road trip during the warmer months (November to March), before you leave any major city look at the weather forecast and the fire danger prediction. Check local traffic reports and see if any road closures might affect your route.

If you are traveling to Australia over summer, make sure your plans are flexible. Fires spread fast, and may cause the closure of main highways without warning.

Download the Fires Near Me app, and keep a close eye on fire danger levels. If roads are closed, buses are rescheduled, or trains are canceled, you will need to wait until the roads are open again. Contact your travel provider if plans have changed, or if you're unsure.

When total fire ban rules apply, read up on what you need to know here.

Listen to the advice from the Rural Fire Service (RFS), and watch out for 'Emergency' level fire alerts. Anyone with lung or heart conditions are urged to stay inside due to the heavy smoke haze. You can check the current and forecast air quality levels here.

Jetstar industrial action – December 2019

It's been reported Jetstar staff will be conducting a series of strikes on beginning on 13, 14 and 15 December 2019. If you're an Australian or New Zealand resident with a travel insurance policy from World Nomads, find out how this may affect your coverage.

Catastrophic fire conditions in NSW, Australia – November 2019

Fires have destroyed 150 homes and killed three people in NSW during a catastrophic weekend of bushfires on Australia's east coast.

Strong winds and temperatures nearing 104ºF (40ºC) are forecast for Tuesday 12 November 2019 in the Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter region of NSW – this includes the Blue Mountains and Central Coast regions.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have announced national parks and reserves will be closed, including tracks, trails, campgrounds and picnic areas across the Central Coast, Hunter (including the Hunter Valley, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie), Mid North Coast (Coffs Harbour and the Big Banana), North Coast (including Byron Bay) and North West of NSW from Monday 11 November 2019 until further notice.

If you are currently traveling in an area that has a catastrophic warning, stay up to date with the NSW Rural Fire Service – download the app, sign up for alerts or notifications and if you see smoke, call 000.

This is not the time to pack the campervan and head up the coast. Delay any camping trips or road trips in NSW or Queensland until the threat of fires has died down. This may take up to a week, so be flexible with your plans.

Larapinta Trail Closure - February 2019

Due to bushfires in the Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park in the past two weeks, sections 2 - 11 of the Larapinta Trail are closed until further notice due to damage to the trail, surrounding vegetation and signage. This affects locations such as Ormiston Gorge, Standley Chasm and Serpentine Gorge.

National Park staff are about to commence assessments and repair work to ensure the trail is ready for the 2019 walking season. It's advised that those who plan to walk the trail this season to be skilled with topography map reading, using a compass and GPS due to the fire damage.

Travelers must follow all local warnings and closure signage. Do not enter fire-damaged areas.

For more information on current conditions and how to plan your walk, please check out the Northern Territory government website and Larapinta Trail

Bushfires Impacting Tasmania - February 2019

Bushfires are currently impacting parts of southern Tasmania. Authorities have issued fire warnings and evacuations are in place for some towns. Some roads may be closed as firefighters battle to get the fires under control.

The Tahune Airwalk has sustained significant damage and will be closed until further notice.

Bushfire advice warnings have been issued for the following locations:

Castle Forbes Bay

Geeveston

Waterloo

Glen Huon

Huonville

Judbury

Lonnavale

Maydena

If you are traveling around Tasmania, check with authorities for more information before traveling to any destination, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation.

Cyclone Oma - February 2019

Category 2 Severe Tropical Cyclone Oma is located approximately 710km northeast of Brisbane, moving slowly at 5.5mph (9kph). Meteorologists from Australia's Bureau of Meteorology predict that the cyclone will weaken over the weekend (23-24th Feb), downgrading to a low-pressure system. Despite the cyclone not making landfall, its proximity to the coast will bring heavy damaging surf conditions, rainfall, very strong winds and coastal erosion.

Hazardous surf conditions and gale force wind warnings have been issued from Queensland's Capricornia Coast (Seventeen Seventy) right down to Coffs Harbour, on the NSW mid-north coast. Lifesavers have closed beaches along the coast and have been warned people not to enter the water.

Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island ferry services have significantly reduced or canceled due to the large swell. Please check with ferry providers before traveling.

Those living on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane, particularly those near waterways or coastal locations may experience localized flooding due to heavy rainfall and tides. Travelers should take care when driving on roads in affected locations and obey all road signage and traffic control in place.

Check with authorities for more information before traveling to any destination, follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation.

Townsville Floods - February 2019

Townsville experienced widespread flooding due to a monsoonal weather system that has inundated the city with a year's worth of rainfall in a week. Many highways and roads in surrounding areas are still cut by flood waters.

Local authorities have reported cases of the contaminated soil and waterborne disease melioidosis, which has claimed the life of one person and hospitalized several others in intensive care.

If you see flood waters as you are driving towards Townsville and surrounding regions, do not attempt to drive through. Obey all road closure signs. For more information, please visit the Townsville City Council Emergency Management Dashboard.

Follow any official warnings and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation.

Cyclone Owen - December 2018

Category 3 Cyclone Owen is currently making its way southeast in the Gulf of Carpentaria towards Queensland from the Northern Territory. The Bureau of Meteorology reports that Owen will intensify to a category 4 when it makes landfall in Queensland, packing wind gusts of 140-175mph (225-279km/h).

Cairns and other towns in Far North Queensland and as far south as Mackay and the Whitsundays Region will be impacted by strong winds and heavy rain with the risk of flash flooding. Authorities have placed a flood watch as far south as Rainbow Beach and are strongly advising people to move to safety such as an evacuation center or out of the impact area.

Strong Winds Impacting Sydney and Melbourne - November 2018

Dozens of flights, on all carriers flying in and out of Sydney and Melbourne, have been delayed or canceled due to strong winds currently impacting the east coast of Australia. Sydney Airport is currently functioning on one runway and several flights have had to abort landings for safety reasons. This will have follow-on effects across the country.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted these strong winds to last well into Friday evening (23 November)

Please check with your airline (domestic and international flights) or more information.

Bushfires near Newcastle Airport - November 2018

NSW Rural Fire Service and Newcastle Airport report that there are traffic delays and road closures near the airport due to a bushfire burning nearby in Campvale and Salt Ash including near the runway. While the airport remains open, passengers are strongly advised to make sure they take extra time to get to the airport in case of delays. There are also issues with cell phone reception in the area.

Incoming flights from Sydney or Melbourne may be impacted by the strong winds currently affecting those two cities causing delays and cancellations. Check with your airline before departure for more information.

Being forewarned means you can enjoy the region's natural beauty and stay safe.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Crocodiles In Australia

When people think of the top end of Australia, more often than not crocodiles and their toothy grins will come to mind. Crocodiles and their relatives have been on Earth for ~84 million years and are the closest living relatives to birds. These iconic reptilian predators inhabit mangrove wetlands, creeks, rivers and coastal areas in the Northern Territory; and have been spotted as far south as Broome in Western Australia and Gladstone in Queensland.

There are two types of crocodiles:

Freshwater (Freshies)

These reptiles grow to around 10ft (3m) in size, smaller build than their saltwater cousins less threatening and are not capable of killing a human.

Saltwater (Salties)

These guys are much larger than their freshwater cousins, more aggressive and much, much more serious to deal with. Unlike what their name suggests, Saltwater crocodiles aren't just found in the sea. They generally spend the tropical wet season in freshwater swamps and rivers, moving downstream to estuaries in the dry season, and sometimes traveling far out to sea.

As these Salties start at around 2 metres long and can get as big as 15 metres, it's unlikely you'll find one in your shoe or under your teacup. So you do have a chance to be prepared in advance. It can be hard however, to recognise when you've entered croc territory as they're well disguised, rarely showing themselves and approaching their targets very stealthily.

Warning Signs

The vast majority of fatalities and injuries have occurred when people have either ignored warning signs or not swum in designated safe areas.

Authorities place warning signs in known locations where crocodiles like to frequent. But.. if there is no sign, it doesn't mean it's croc free.

In saying that, just because there appears to be no crocodiles around, doesn't mean there isn't. These guys are the masters of disguise and stealth. A crocodile can stay submerged for up to four hours.

So don't risk your life and heed the warning signs.

Tips to Stay Croc Safe

As crocs are often found in remote areas and wilderness, help could be far off, so it's best to err on the side of caution and pay attention to these tips:

How do I avoid a croc attack? Thinking about swimming or boating:

If you see a crocodile sign, do not go swimming, padling or wading. At all. Not even your big toe. If you're in an area where you know salties are present, the same thing applies; no swimming. Especially at night. Don't sit on branches overhanging croc creeks Be careful in boats - don't dangle your feet over the edge.

If you're camping, remember, these guys are great at lunging out of the water and grabbing stuff from the banks.

Set up at least 50 metres from the edge of the water Be very cautious about collecting water and don't collect it from the same spot everyday Don't leave leftover food need the water Don't clean fish at the edge of the water or share your fish guts with them.

<imageAttribution>GettyImages/renelo	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Beautiful tropical Vanuatu has plenty to offer travelers, but how do you stay healthy while exploring this paradise. Here are our tips to avoid illness and other health concerns.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Medical Care

If you do require medical treatment Hospital and medical facilities in Vanuatu are limited and very expensive. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for their services. In the event of a serious illness or accident (including diving-related injuries), medical evacuation to a destination with appropriate facilities would be necessary. Also, there is only one hyperbaric chamber in Vanuatu, located in Port Vila. Many of the popular dive sites are located on other islands and it may take several hours to reach facilities in the event of an accident. It is recommended that you get the following vaccinations before travelling to Vanuatu: Hep A Hep B Typhoid (for longer term travellers) Up to date Tetanus-Diptheria, Measles Mumps & Rubella

Health & Disease in Vanuatu

Sunburn and dehydration are obvious health issues in the tropics always wear sunscreen a hat sunglasses try to stay out of sun during main heat day between 11am and 2pm also drink plenty of water hydrated anything with an umbrella fruit it doesn't really count

As in any tropical areas, small sores or cuts can easily become infected if not given proper care. Coral cuts in particular can be dangerous as they can quickly become infected. If you do suffer a coral cut a squeeze of lime or lemon can be a good natural antiseptic or contact your accommodation provider for some hydrogen peroxide or antiseptic. Any cuts or abrasions should be left open and not covered with sticking plasters.

As in any tropical area the risk of malaria and other mosquito-borne disease including Dengue Fever is quite high. As always prevention is the best cure, wear an insect repellant at all times and use an insect net over your bedding if you accommodation doesn't have air-conditioning or insect screens.

Seafood Poisoning

Another danger to be aware of in the tropics is the risk of Ciguatera poisoning from warm water or reef fish.

The symptoms of Ciguatera poisoning include:

tingling and numbness in fingers, toes, around lips, tongue, mouth and throat

burning sensation or skin pain on contact with cold water joint and muscle pains with muscular weakness

nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and/or abdominal cramps

headache, fatigue and fainting

extreme itchiness, often worsened by drinking alcohol

difficulty breathing in severe cases.

Fish that feed in warm ocean waters are potential carriers of ciguatera toxin. Problems are encountered with many fish species including coral trout, Spanish mackerel, red emperor, wrasse, reef cod, sturgeon fish, trevally and kingfish. At present, there is no effective treatment or antidote for ciguatera poisoning. But you should always seek medical care if you suspect you are suffering from ciguatera poisoning. The foolproof way to avoid poisoning is to avoid eating any and all reef fish.

There are no real threats from land creatures in Vanuatu - no snakes, spiders or insects to be wary of. But as well as ciguatera poisoning there are a few risks posed by swimming creatures, including being bitten by a sea snake or stung by a stonefish and there are even saltwater crocodiles to be aware of. But the likelihood of an attack from any of these is nominal at best.

The only real threat on the land is from the large wild dog population in Port Vila, these have sometimes been known to attack small children, so avoid them.
<imageAttribution>	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights></haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

What are the issues affecting travelers in New Zealand?
West coast wild weather – March 2019

A state of emergency has been declared for the west coast of New Zealand's South Island due to a severe storm system which have battered the coast since last Sunday night, resulting in heavy rain, flooding and landslides. One person has died and hundreds of people are displaced as the system moves north along the coast. There are power disruptions in several locations.

Many roads and highways have been completely cut off or significantly damaged due to extreme flooding. State Highway 73, between Arthurs Pass and Jacksons, is currently impacted due to two landslides and the Franz Josef-Fox Glacier Highway has been cut off due to the raging Wahio River taking out the WahioBridge, leaving people stranded in Franz Josef unable to travel south towards Fox Glacier and Wanaka. There have also been numerous landslides on the highway between Fox Glacier and Franz Josef. Currently, the only route north along the west coast is via the Lewis Pass. For more information, check out the New Zealand Transport Agency website.

Government authorities have indicated it will take days or weeks to assess and repair roads depending on the severity of damage in affected locations.

Travelers are strongly advised to obey all official signage and warnings from emergency personnel. Do not attempt to drive or walk through floodwaters or closed areas for your own safety. Motorists are also advised to take caution while driving due to road conditions, debris and work crews cleaning up.

An out of control bushfire is currently burning in the Nelson-Tasman region of New Zealand's South Island. The fast-moving fire started in Pigeon Valley (18.6 mi/30km south of Nelson) on February 5th and has doubled in size overnight, burning 7.22 sq. mi (18.7 sq.km) with a perimeter of 12.4 miles (20km). Over 170 homes have been evacuated as ground crews and water-bombing aircraft fight to get the blaze under control. There are road closures in place.

A state of emergency has been declared by the Tasman and Nelson district mayors. Authorities have ordered people to evacuate if they feel unsafe and if located in the immediate fire zone to make sure they have access to radio and other media for further updates.

How dangerous is wildlife in Australia?

Spiders in Australia

Snakes in Australia

Sharks, jellyfish and crocodiles in Australia

One of the greatest myths about Australia is that it is home to a lot of wildlife that can kill you. Technically, that’s correct but the likelihood of it happening is very low. Here’s our guide to the reality and how to minimize risks.

As well as its incredible beaches and wilderness areas, Australia is well-known for its unique wildlife – koalas and kangaroos, anyone? It’s a popular destination as a result, but, for some, its natural wonders can also be off-putting, too. Australia has a host of deadly animals thanks to its unique biodiversity, but the reality is there is very little to fear – and the stats prove it.

So trust us when we say there is absolutely no need to have reservations about a trip to Oz due to its animal inhabitants. I lived there for nearly two decades and can count on one hand the number of times I saw a big spider (and the harmless kind, too). If you’re in a city such as Sydney, for example, the most ick thing you might see is a couple of cockroaches scurrying around the streets at night. But that’s it.

There’s an abundance of opportunities to be dazzled by Australia’s wonderful natural bounty. Snorkeling and diving tours on the Great Barrier Reef are a must, and zoos and wildlife parks across the country have an abundance of fascinating animals for you to safely encounter and offer insights into Australia's one-of-a-kind wildlife.

How dangerous is wildlife in Australia?

Australia’s vast expanse means the likelihood of coming across a deadly creature is very low. Unless, of course, you sign up for something up-close and fun – and completely safe – such as trips with tour guides on a saltwater croc-spotting cruise in the Northern Territory. In the wild, there are very few fatal attacks – in the last available stats covering 2022, there were five deaths from contact with venomous animals and two from marine animals.

It is extremely unlikely that anyone – tourists or residents – will be in danger with any native critters. When rare instances do happen, it’s hugely unusual, so that’s why it hits the headlines.

There is nothing to fear about the country’s urban areas, and the more remote you go into the Outback or on camping tours, there is plenty of guidance to follow from experienced tour guides or the parks and wildlife services. When it comes to beaches, you’ll notice the extensive signs up warning you to take precautions where needed and plenty of advice available from the local crew from Surf Life Saving Australia, the national organization that covers beach safety and rescues. Personal safety is your responsibility, so do your research and pay attention to advice from the national parks and lifeguard services while traveling around.

Spiders in Australia

Think of spiders as Australia’s own pest control force, part of the wider ecosystem helping to control the population of bugs. One of the most common that can wander into homes and cars in urban residential areas is the huntsman spider, but it is harmless. They’re a bit grim to look at, with an average leg span of 15 cm, and can move at a fair pace, but they only attack if provoked – which results in a mild, nonvenomous nip – so leave them alone.

There are two deadly types of spiders: the funnel-web and redback, but thanks to antivenom, there hasn't been a death from either since 1980. When camping or outdoors, Tourism Australia advises shaking out shoes before putting them on and that travelers avoid touching spiderwebs.

Snakes in Australia

There are venomous snakes that call Australia home, but snake bite incidents are extremely rare and antivenom is available for all snake species. To put it into perspective, on average there are two snake deaths a year in Australia, out of an annual total of 140,000 worldwide.

The main varieties of dangerous snakes include the brown snake and tiger snake, which can be found in the eastern, central, and southern dry and hot parts of the country, but are very timid and unlikely to attack unless provoked. There’s also the taipan, which can be found in remote desert areas and coastal Queensland, but again is only aggressive if threatened.

When venturing into areas outside of cities, follow commonsense advice. Never try to catch or kill a snake; most snake bites occur when the snake is defending itself. Always hike in closed shoes in the bush and have a strong footfall; snakes react to vibrations on the ground, so let them know you're coming so they won't be surprised. If you do spot one, keep your distance, back away slowly, and let it go on its way.

Sharks, jellyfish and crocodiles in Australia

Yes, there are dangers lurking in Australia's waters, but millions of people enjoy safely swimming at Australia's beaches, rivers, and lakes every year. Again, common sense rules, and stick to guidance from the local lifesaving teams. Pay attention to the warning signs at beach entrances about risks such as submerged rocks, strong currents, and jellyfish, and only swim at patrolled beaches between the lifesavers’ red and yellow flags.

Sharks: never swim or dive alone, and avoid swimming near fishing areas, or where diving birds indicate fish activity. Don't swim with pets or at dawn or dusk, and if possible swim in shark-netted areas or beaches with shark mitigation activity such as nets or drum lines. If a shark is sighted, lifeguards will sound an alarm for all swimmers to leave the water. There are also apps that keep track of shark sightings.

You can go scuba-diving with docile nurse sharks at various places around NSW, and you can cage dive with great white sharks at Port Lincoln in South Australia.

Jellyfish: Irukandji jellyfish are highly venomous, very small, and hard to spot and inhabit tropical Queensland and Western Australia's waters between November and May. Box jellyfish are bigger with long tentacles. Their sting can kill in 5 minutes and they are more likely to be found in waters of the Northern Territory. Follow local guidance and signage. Symptoms from stinging include pain, vomiting, and breathing difficulties. Call 000 if you or someone else is stung and seek immediate medical attention.

Wearing a stinger suit (a lightweight full-body covering) acts as a barrier against jellyfish stings and another useful layer of sun protection, too. Most tour companies will offer suits for use or hire on excursions in the water.

Crocodiles: also residents of Australia's tropical north, saltwater, and freshwater varieties live in rivers, the ocean, and swimming holes. Historically, hunted for their skins, conservation efforts mean that crocodiles are now a protected species in Australia and their numbers have hugely increased since it became illegal to kill or cull them. There are thought to be around 100,000 crocodiles in Australia, mostly around Darwin and the Mary River areas. Freshwater crocs, or freshies, are smaller and less aggressive than saltwater crocs, or salties.

You do not want to encounter a crocodile, and if you see one in the wild, do not attempt to feed it. Never swim in any waterway where crocodile hazard signs are posted or camp, fish or walk in any area nearby. If there aren’t any signs at all, it’s still best to stay out of the water and head to a patrolled beach instead.

<imageAttribution>Milly Brady/wheresmildo.com	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Milly Brady/Wheresmildo.com	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A croc sign in Cairns</imageCaption>

Get ready for your trip to the Cook Islands with these handy safety tips, from rental scooters to medical care, here's everything you need to know before you go.

https://www.worldnomads.com

This is the quintessential South Pacific island getaway – with white sandy beaches, clear blue lagoons, vibrant coral reefs, and tropical fish all around. The 15 Cook Islands are spread over 770,000mi² (2,000,000km²) of ocean south of Hawaii, west of Tonga and east of Tahiti. Cook Islanders are generally happy, laid-back and God-fearing with a strong sense of culture.

To prepare for your trip, here are a few handy things to know before you go.

Natural Disasters

Health

Scams

Roads and Rental Scooters

Access to Medical Care

Food and Water Hygiene

1. Natural Disasters in the Cook Islands

Due to it's location in the South Pacific ocean, cyclones occur during the peak season, November to March. On average the Cook Islands get one big cyclone approximately every five years – but that's just an average – in 2005 they got five cyclones in five weeks!

2. Health in the Cook Islands

As a tropical destination, the Cook Islands have seen a rise in Dengue Fever. In February 2019 the Ministry of Health declared a dengue outbreak following 40 cases from January to April. The best way to avoid getting Dengue Fever is to keep yourself covered at dawn and dusk with long sleeves, and always slap insect repellent on, no matter the time of day (as well as sublock).

3. Scams and Crime in the Cook Islands

Scams against tourists are unheard of, and petty crime is minimal, but don't tempt fate by leaving mobile phones and cameras carelessly on top of your towel on the beach while you go snorkeling. The most common petty crime is the theft of cash and valuables from the storage bins on rented motor scooters. Always keep everything secure in your bag.

4. Roads and Rental Scooters

If you decide to rent a motorcycle or scooter to get around the Cook Islands, be very cautious. Some roads are in poor condition, and worse at night due to poor visibility with limited lighting. Most accidents requiring hospital treatment involve motorcycles or scooters on the islands.

If you rent any type of vehicle (two or four wheeled) you will need a Cook Islands driver's license. The rental company will issue you a temporary paper license valid until 12pm the next day. After that you need to get an official one from the police station in Avarua. Pay the fee to get a card with your photo on it – and no driving test required. It's kind of an unofficial tourist tax. But don't skimp on the expense, police do frequent license checks and will fine you if you don't have the license.

The license does not magically give you the right to ride a motorcycle legally if you do not have a motorcycle license from home. If you have an accident, medical treatment in Cook Islands is expensive and your travel insurance won't cover you if you aren't licensed in your home country.

The speed limit on Rarotonga is 50km/h, except when riding a motorcycle without a helmet it becomes 40 km/h. Helmets are not compulsory here, but the safety benefits of using one are so universally recognised that failing to do so may cause you problems with your travel insurer if you are injured – they may argue that you didn't take all reasonable steps to ensure your safety. Always wear a helmet, despite the local laws.

The police are also pretty strict at making sure you stay within the legal drink-driving limit, but at 0.08 the Cook Islands limit is among the highest in the world.

5. Hospitals and Medical Care

Hospital and medical facilities are limited and anything complicated usually requires evacuation to New Zealand (expensive, especially if you don't have travel/medical insurance). Hospital treatment for the uninsured often requires an upfront payment, and it isn't cheap.

For a magnificent dive site there is sadly no hyperbaric decompression chamber in the Cook Islands. Do your dive tables carefully, or you mind wind up on a medical flight to New Zealand.

6. Food and Water Hygiene

It's recommended that you drink only bottled water, or sterilize local supplies before consuming.

The Cook Islands are a long way from anywhere and spread out over thousands of kilometers of ocean, consequently the stores may have limited supply and selection of food available. If you've picked self-catering accommodation you might not be able to get the brands or types of food you have back at home. The rules for visitors bringing their own supplies are very generous. Savvy travelers bring suitcases stuffed with goods and vacuum-sealed packed meats. If you fancy your favorite cheese and nibbles at sunset, you might have to bring your own.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Photo by Stas Kulesh	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>143949963	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Aerial view at Rarotonga island</imageCaption>

A low crime rate doesn't mean zero danger. From wilderness safety to preparing for weather extremes, this is what all first-time visitors need to know before visiting the land Down Under.

https://www.worldnomads.com

You're more likely to have a flip flop blow out than fall victim to crime while you're traveling Down Under. But here are some handy tips to keep yourself safe while traveling in Australia.

Australia has some of the lowest crime rates in the world however like many countries, the crime which may exist tends to cluster in the major cities. By exercising some common sense for your own personal safety and your belongings, your trip around Australia can be a safe one.

Alcohol-fueled crime

Car crime

Other safety tips

Important numbers you can call for help

Alcohol-fueled crime

Alcohol-related crime can sometimes occur in nightlife spots and venues in cities around Australia. While you're likely to have an incident-free night out, there are things you can do to make it a safe one.

Drink in moderation so you can maintain your faculties to get back to your accommodation

Don't leave your drink or bag unattended. Keep an eye on them at all times

Don't accept drinks from anyone you don't know

Take only what you need out with you for the night

Look after your mates and yourself. If one of them or you starts not looking so good, feeling faint or acting incoherent, seek help immediately from venue staff and contact police as drink spiking may have occurred. Call 000 if you need medical assistance urgently.

Car crime

Theft from vehicles does happen and it doesn't matter if you are driving a car or a campervan but there are things you can do to avoid making your vehicle and its contents appealing for an opportunistic thief.

Take your valuables out of the vehicle where possible including any papers with your details on there such as rental hire. Don't lock them in the glovebox overnight, that's one of the first places thieves will check

If you are traveling, hide your valuables out of sight if you leave the vehicle for a break, etc

Sounds so simple but... lock the vehicle regardless of where you are. Make sure all windows are up and doors are secured. Don't forget the sunroof!

Park your vehicle in a well-lit area at night where possible.

Other safety tips

Crowded places like festivals, markets and transport hubs can be hot spots for pickpockets. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings

Only carry what you need for the day. Aside from having fewer things for a potential thief to flog, it's less you may accidentally lose

Don't leave your bag or belongings unattended

Walk in well-lit areas at night

Avoid using your headphones or walking around looking at your phone at night if alone. Aside from the need to know who is around you, you need to pay attention to the traffic should you need to cross a street or road. That latest Instagram post can wait.

Important numbers you can call for help

The emergency number to call in Australia is 000 or 112. This will put you in touch with an operator who will direct your call to police, fire or ambulance.

Several states and territories in Australia have a police assistance line for non-emergency cases such as reporting lost property, drink spiking (if medical attention isn't needed), motor vehicle theft, stealing and fraud.

If you are in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia or Northern Territory you can call 131444.

Victoria Police don't have an assistance line. To report non-emergency issues, please visit the nearest police station.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/BrookAttakorn	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Tuvalu is an almost crime-free gem in the Pacific. But what do you do when you hear a siren? Find out how to stay safe on your vacation.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Tuvalu is a group of nine low-lying coral atolls with a surface area of just 16mi² (26km²) dispersed over 807,700 mi (1,300,000km) in the Central Pacific.

This small section of paradise is maybe, just maybe, one of the last great untouched destinations in the world. Fewer than a thousand tourists visit each year, so facilities are basic to say the very least.

Is there any crime to worry about?

While basic, Tuvalu has to be one of the safest places in the world to visit. There is hardly anything for a traveler to worry about as violent crime is virtually non-existent, and when it does happen it usually involves alcohol and family disputes.

Much of the capital's island life takes place on the largest strip of land – the airport runway. Don't worry, a man with a megaphone or siren will tell you when it's time to get out of the way of the landing aircraft.

Natural dangers in Tuvalu

As a low-lying coral atoll, the greatest threat is of natural causes, such as changes in sea level that have a great affect on Tuvalu and the affects of climate change, which can be seen on an almost month to month basis.

Cyclones are also a threat. Cyclone season falls between November and April, so perhaps avoid these months to avoid the threat of severe weather.

LGBTQ safety in Tuvalu

Male homosexuality is illegal in Tuvalu, and if you are caught, you may serve jail time.

The transgender population (pinapinaaine) traditionally played part in many roles of society, however since the arrival of Christianity and Europeans, LGBTQ attitudes have changed.

To be on the safe side, keep public displays of affection to a minimum while traveling here.

Fun fact about the economy

Tuvalu's economy doesn't rely on tourism dollars to keep it afloat. In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name ".tv" for $50 million in royalties, which has increased the country’s gross domestic product by 50%, and is one of the country's largest sources of income.

If you've been to Tuvalu, what safety tips do you have to share? Tell us in the comments below.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Dmitry Malov	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>1066253904	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Tuvalu under the wing of an airplane</imageCaption>

Tropical cyclones, crime in Honiara, safety tips for transport and local etiquette and customs tips to know before you go.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The Solomon Islands are made up of six major islands and more than 900 smaller islands, which are spread out to the east of Papua New Guinea and north of Australia. Travelers come here for the relaxing beach resorts, but most are drawn by the coral atolls, mountain peaks and crystal clear water with unbelievably good scuba diving and snorkeling.

The main island is Guadalcanal, the scene of fierce fighting in WWII, and where the capital city of Honiara is found. Honiara isn't the safest place to be, so skip the capital for one of the outlying islands for a trouble free trip.

Crime in Honiara

The Solomons is a melting pot of various ethnicities, and not all of these cultural groups get along. When one cultural group is unhappy, they like to show their frustrations via protests, which often turn into riots, which then sparks looting and general lawlessness.

Avoid all protests and public gatherings. Keep an eye on local media reports (or ask hotel staff) about potential conflict. Trouble brews quickly here.

Honiara is also the crime capital of The Solomons, and wealthy-looking visitors are often a target. Leave the expensive watches and expensive jewelry at home.

Don't walk around the streets alone at night (best to go with a group or a guide), and give the early morning jog a miss.

If you do go out to a bar at night, be aware there'll always be a few locals who like to fight – there were active headhunters on these islands until the 1930s, so they probably know how to handle themselves.

During the day pick pocketing, bag snatching, mobile phone theft and general harassment is common.

Hot-spots for crime in Honiara

These are the most common areas that experience crime in the capital: the Central Market, Point Cruz, the area surrounding old Mataniko bridge in Central Honiara (Chinatown), the Kukum area, Burns Creek/Lungga River in east Honiara, White River in west Honiara, Borderline and Kombito Market in the south-east of Honiar, and squatter settlement areas in and around Honiara.

Plus the Japanese War Memorial at Mt Austin where criminal gangs will operate in broad daylight.

The incidence of crime typically increases during the Christmas period, in the lead-up to major holidays and following periods of political instability.

If you are planning to travel outside Honiara to rural Guadalcanal, Malaita and other provinces, you should contact the High Commission for an update on the security situation prior to travel.

Yachties beware

Foreign governments also warn their yacht-based citizens to take care in Honiara harbour where there have been reports of criminals boarding yachts at night and stealing valuables. They are usually armed and are not deterred if confronted. It's best to let them take what they want and live to tell the tale.

Local etiquette

Unnecessary friction is easily avoided if visitors take the time to acquaint themselves with local etiquette:

Land ownership in the Solomons is a sensitive issue. Trekking through seeming wilderness or using beaches close to Honiara may require payment of a ‘kastom' fee to local landowners

Dress codes are modest and all tourists, especially women, are advised to avoid offence by respecting local custom

Certain taboo sites may only be visited by men

Swearing is a crime. It can lead to compensation claims or jail, or both

Homosexual acts (by either sex) are illegal and penalties include jail sentences.

Wildlife and natural disasters

Bull, Hammerhead and Tiger sharks are present throughout Solomon Islands coastal waters. The timid Reef Shark is harmless, but, unless you know the difference, be wary of all sharks.

About 50 people are killed every year by saltwater crocodiles. These are locals, well-acquainted with the ever-present danger. Unsuspecting tourists are well advised to seek advice before entering unfamiliar waters and to be wary in any case.

In and around Honiara, uncontrolled dogs roam freely, often in packs. Tourists are advised to be cautious.

Earthquakes

Solomon Islands is part of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire', an area of volcanic activity over 40,000 kilometres long where 90% of the world's earthquakes occur. Four active volcanoes are listed. In April 2007, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake and tsunami struck the Solomon Islands killing at least 20 people and destroying villages. Another earthquake occurred in the Western Province on 4 January 2010. The resultant tsunami caused significant structural damage on the islands of Tetepare and Rendova. No lives were lost.

In 2013 a 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck the islands at a depth of 24km, which is considered very shallow. The resulting tsunami killed nine people.

Find out what to do if there's a tsunami and how to stay safe during an earthquake.

Cyclones

The tropical cyclone season runs from November to May. Cyclones bring heavy rain and cause local flooding. Roads are damaged nd bridges often washed away. Travellers are advised to check local weather forecasts before traveling in unfamiliar areas.

Getting around safely

You should consider taking precautions when travelling by sea, such as providing your own life-jackets, as safety regulations are not always strictly applied.

Overcrowding of passenger ferries is common and can increase the safety risk.

There are few roads in the Solomon Islands, 90% of these are on Guadalcanal and Malaita. Many are very heavily potholed and in some areas bridges have collapsed.

Standards of driving and vehicle maintenance are poor. Be especially careful when overtaking any vehicle.

Many Solomon Islanders chew betel nut and frequently open vehicle doors, including on the driver's side, when travelling at speed, in order to spit onto the road.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/grace conlan	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>893366216	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A tropical beach in the Solomon Islands</imageCaption>

Samoa is one of the most stable nations in the Pacific, but be aware of street crime and natural hazards with these travel safety tips.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The Samoan Islands are an archipelago covering 1,170mi² (3,030km²) in the central South Pacific ocean. Samoa (not to be confused with American Samoa) is made up of the westernmost islands, and it's two largest islands are Upolu and Savai'i. The capital, Apia, is located on Upolu.

1. Is there any Crime in Samoa?

Samoa's crime rate is relatively low compared to nearby Pacific Islands. Samoa does have issues with residential break-ins, but this isn't much of a concern for travelers.

The majority of crime occurs in and around Samoa's capital city, Apia. The most common offenses are possession of drugs, theft and assault. Avoid poorly lit areas at night and keep a low profile – don't be flashy with jewelry, cameras, phones or belongings to risk your chances of being a target.

Street crime in major urban areas, such as theft from vehicles, drunken fights at local night clubs, pick-pocketing, and scams are common in Samoa, and travelers should be on the lookout to avoid becoming a victim.

2. Road safety in Samoa

Traffic congestion in Apia's Central Business District can be an issue. There is a large number of unlicensed drivers who are in vehicles that aren't roadworthy. Poor maintenance of roads, potholes, and flooded roads can be a headache for drivers.

3. Politics and civil unrest in Samoa

Samoa has had very little political violence, making it one of the most stable island nations in the Pacific.

The HRPP (Human Rights Protection Party) under the leadership of Prime Minister Fatialofa Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi have been the ruling party since 1998.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Samoan islands were split into two sections. The eastern islands became territories of the United States in 1904, and are known as American Samoa. The western islands became known as Western Samoa (now the Independent State of Samoa), passing from German control to New Zealand in 1914. Western Samoa was administered until independence in 1962, and was the first Pacific Island country to gain independence.

In 1997, the country's name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa (officially the "Independent State of Samoa").

The risk of civil unrest in Samoa is very low, but travelers should check local news and media before departure.

4. Is terrorism a threat in Samoa?

The Pacific island nations are increasingly being used as transit points in the illicit movement of drugs, weapons, and people by organized crime groups, which can go hand-in-hand with terrorism. Organized crime groups are typically involved in transnational crime with overseas criminal connections. While the threat of terrorism remains low, no country is completely safe from terrorism.

5. Natural hazards in Samoa

Natural disasters are a danger to travelers in Samoa, including cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Samoa is located in a seismic region, where earthquakes do happen throughout the year – and some cause tsunamis. In September 2009, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake south of Samoa generated a tsunami, which killed 189 people in Samoa and caused massive damage. Samoa has installed a tsunami warning system, and to help in reaction time, local telephones services send instant messages in the case of an emergency.

The cyclone season runs from November to April in Samoa, and these tropical storms can cause significant damage. When heavy rainfall causes flooding of coastal areas, water supplies may be tainted and landslides can happen.

6. Drug laws in Samoa

The Pacific island nations are increasingly becoming transit points for the shipment of illicit drugs.

Do not accept or buy drugs in Samoa. There are strict laws in place for drug possession, including fines and imprisonment.

7. Health and medical facilities in Samoa

In November 2019 a state of emergency was delcared in Samoa due to a measels outbreak. Before you go, make sure you are up to date with all routine vaccinations. Ask your travel doctor which vaccinations you need.

Here are a few recommended vaccinations for Samoa:

Hepatitis A and B

Influenza

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)

Typhoid

Yellow fever

Chickenpox

Shingles

Rabies

Meningitis

Polio

Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis)

Pneumonia

Medical and dental care throughout Samoa isn't of a high standard, and as a result, medical evacuation for serious illness or injury might be your best option. For medical emergencies, depending on the severity of your situation, you may be evacuated to one of the two national hospitals located on Upolu and Savai'i.

Emergency numbers in Samoa:

Fire emergencies: 994

Police: 995

Medical emergencies: 996

8. Important safety tips for Samoa

The majority of crimes in Samoa are crimes of opportunity. Always be aware of your surroundings and be extra cautious if you are in the area of the seawall adjacent to the local night clubs and bars, especially at night.

Avoid taking short cuts via narrow alleys, or poorly lit streets

If you can, travel in groups at night

Avoid public demonstrations and protests

Walk away from loud conversations or arguments

Be wary of strangers who approach you and offer to be your guide or sell you something at bargain prices – it could be a scam

If you are confronted, hand over what they are asking for – keeping your possessions is not worth losing your life or being injured

Keep the door to your accommodation locked at all times

Do not leave valuables visible in any vehicle. If you must leave items in a car, keep them locked in the trunk

Never pick up hitchhikers

Do not flash large amounts of money.

Our travel safety expert answers all your questions, from crime and scams to safe tap water and local laws.

https://www.worldnomads.com

- Updated May 16, 2024 with information on the ongoing protests -

Of all the Franco-islands in the Pacific, New Caledonia is perhaps the most French, due to a large expatriate population – who are mostly government employees sent to administer affairs of state. It's those people who demand fresh berries from the south of France and imported flour to make sure the patisseries are just like at home.

But New Caledonia has a history and culture all its own. Here's what visitors need to know to stay safe and get the most from their trip.

How safe is New Caledonia?

Crime and scams in New Caledonia

Local laws in New Caledonia

Health and medical treatment in New Caledonia

Hospitals and medical evacuation in New Caledonia

Scuba diving safety tips

Can I drink tap water in New Caledonia?

Getting around New Caledonia safely

Cyclone season in New Caledonia

How safe is New Caledonia?

Ordinarily, travelers in New Caledonia experience a safe, laid-back South Pacific paradise. However, there has long been tension between the indigenous Kanak population – many of whom seek independence – and the French. These tensions recently erupted into violence over a proposed electoral reform that would allow French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for ten years or more to vote in provincial elections. Due to rioting, the airport was closed on May 15 and a state of emergency was declared, to take effect on May 16 and last at least 12 days.

Travelers are advised to reconsider their need to travel to the capital city of Nouméa and exercise a high degree of caution elsewhere in New Caledonia. Authorities recommend avoiding large public demonstrations. Travelers should monitor local media to stay informed of the situation.

Crime and scams in New Caledonia

Under normal circumstances, serious crime in New Caledonia is rare, and violent crime directed to tourists is just about unheard of. But petty crime and theft does occur. Don’t tempt fate by leaving an expensive camera in full view on the beach or on the front seat of your rental car. Always, everywhere, take care of your valuables.

To contact the police, call 17 or 1022. Always get a police report if you need to report a crime.

Local laws in New Caledonia

You're required to carry photo identification at all times. Leave the passport locked up and take a photocopy or your home driver's license – you will not get detained if you are not carrying ID but it's best to have it on you at all times to avoid trouble.

Possession of even small amounts of illegal drugs is a serious crime, and punishments result in fines or going to jail.

Buying or possessing counterfeit or pirated goods is also illegal and can result in heavy fines.

Health and medical treatment in New Caledonia

Hygiene and sanitation standards are good in New Caledonia's resorts, but they may be less so when you venture out to the outer islands. While the vast majority of visitors don't need to be concerned about water-borne disease and parasites, adventurous travelers should be cautious and carry a medical kit when going off the beaten track.

However, dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya are common in the warm and wet months of January to May. There's currently no travel vaccine for dengue or Zika, so do your best to avoid mosquito bites – wear long loose-fitting clothing, cover exposed skin in insect repellent day and night, and make sure your room is mosquito-proof (otherwise, sleep under a mosquito net0.

Tip out any stagnant water you see sitting around your accommodation.

Leptospirosis outbreaks are also common after heavy rainfall. To help prevent infection, wear waterproof footwear, avoid swimming in rivers, and store food in enclosed containers to protect against rodents.

Hospitals and medical evacuation in New Caledonia

If you do get sick or have an accident, the three hospitals on the main island, Grand Terre (the locals call it “Le Caillou” - the pebble), can treat routine ailments and handle most emergencies very well. But if you don't have travel insurance, expect to pay upfront – and pay a lot! Costs for medical treatment in New Caledonia are high.

If you require complex treatment you'll need to be evacuated to Australia, which is 930mi (1,500km) to the west, so be prepared for a huge medical evacuation bill.

In a medical emergency, call 15 or go directly to the hospital.

Scuba diving safety tips

Scuba diving is a popular activity all over New Caledonia, but there's only one decompression chamber, in Nouméa. If you're on an outer island, it's going to be a while before help arrives or you can be transferred to Grand Terre, and it's expensive.

Can I drink tap water in New Caledonia?

Tap water in Nouméa and most resorts is safe to drink, but your other option is to boil water (for at least one minute) or carry water purification tablets when visiting the outer islands. Ask your accommodation staff if the water is safe to drink in case there's contamination.

Getting around New Caledonia safely

You can rent a car, 4WD, scooter, motorbike, or bicycle. To rent a car, your driver's license from home is all you need (provided it’s officially translated into French) or an international driver’s license. But if you decide to try your hand at a motorcycle or scooter, consider travel insurance and be sure to comply with its requirements, such as riding with a helmet and being appropriately licensed to ride in your home country. Being on holiday doesn't magically give you the right (or ability) to ride on two wheels.

In normal times, Nouméa and Greater Nouméa are widely serviced by the local bus network, Tanéo. Taxis are about four times more expensive then catching a bus. To hire a taxi, call +687 28 35 12.

For longer journeys on Le Caillou, the long-distance coach network offers 25 routes.

Cyclone season in New Caledonia

Tropical storms and cyclones (hurricanes) are common November to May, but storms can happen at any time. Because there is limited capacity to leave New Caledonia by commercial flight, it’s possible you may have to ride out the cyclone or storm. Your hotel will advise you on where to take shelter.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/John Seaton Callahan	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>627847338	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Two travelers on a boat just off Amédée Island, New Caledonia</imageCaption>

How safe is French Polynesia? Crime is incredibly low here, but these are the things travelers should do to keep safe while visiting the islands.

https://www.worldnomads.com

COVID-19 travel restrictions: Click here to find out about entry requirements for travelers to French Polynesia.

The French Polynesian islands are divided into five groups, and there are 118 islands and atolls. Of these, only 67 are inhabited. Tahiti is the most populous island.

Tahiti is the main island and economic, political and cultural center of the French Polynesian islands. Other well-known islands include Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Rangiroa.

These islands are deservedly the destination of choice for many honeymooning couples and anyone looking for a relaxing vacation. So, if you enjoy tropical weather, diverse marine life, and a relaxed Polynesian atmosphere with a touch of French flair, a trip to French Polynesia could be the island escape you're looking for.

But, before you buy a plane ticket, what could possibly go wrong here? Not much, is the short answer, but here's everything else you need to know to stay safe in Tahiti.

How bad is crime in Tahiti?

French law governs Tahiti

Health and medical facilities

Hospitals and medical evacuation

Scuba diving safety in Tahiti

Can I drink tap water?

Natural dangers

Getting around safely

Crime and scams in Tahiti

Violent crime directed to tourists is just about unheard of, even petty crime in Tahiti is minimal.

But that doesn't mean you should tempt fate by leaving an expensive camera in full view on the beach, or the passenger seat of your rental car. Always, no matter where you are, take care of your valuables.

There are no serious scams across French Polynesia. Some would argue that's because the place is so expensive, so there's no need to overcharge tourists.

French law governs Tahiti

If you are a perpetrator of crime instead of a victim, be aware that French Polynesia is essentially a province of France, and French law applies. This includes the principle of "garde a vue". If detained by police you do not have the right to immediate access to a lawyer, and police can hold you to ‘assist with enquiries' for up to three days.

You're required to carry identification at all times. Leave the passport locked up and take a photocopy or your home driver's license. If you don't carry this, it won't get you detained, just a good idea to have it at all times

Possession of even small amounts of illegal drugs is a serious crime

It is an offence under French law to fail to offer assistance to a person in danger. If you witness an accident, at the very least you should call the emergency number (dial 17 for police). You are not expected to put your own life in danger to assist someone else, so don't go diving into the water if you can't swim.

Health and medical facilities in French Polynesia

Hygiene and sanitation standards are good in the resort areas of French Polynesia, they may be less so in traditional areas and on the more remote islands. So the vast majority of visitors shouldn't be concerned about water-borne disease and parasites.

However, Dengue Fever is sometimes a problem, like elsewhere in tropical destinations. There's no vaccination, so do your best to avoid mosquito bite – wear long loose-fitting clothing, cover exposed skin in insect repellent day and night, make sure your room is mosquito-proof otherwise sleep under a mosquito net.

Tip out any stagnant water you see sitting around your accommodation.

Hospitals and medical evacuation

If you do get sick or have an accident, the hospital on Tahiti is of a moderate standard – about the same as a medium-sized provincial town, but care is very expensive.

You may also experience long delays in receiving medical attention if you are on one of the outer islands.

Medical evacuation from those islands to Papeete (in Tahiti) is expensive – US $10,000 or more. Get travel insurance and read the policy carefully to make sure needs are covered.

If you require complex treatment you'll need to be evacuated to a nearby nation with the proper facilities. Small problem – you're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, nearby is a really long, and expensive trip.

Scuba diving safety in Tahiti

Scuba diving is a popular activity all over French Polynesia, but there's only one decompression chamber, in Papeete. If you're on an outer island, it's going to be a while before help arrives – or you can be transferred to Tahiti, and it's expensive.

Can I drink tap water in Tahiti?

Tap water in Papeete (Tahiti's capital) is safe to drink, as well as resorts in Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. Always check with hotel staff before you do so, just in case there is water contamination from flooding or cyclones. Avoid buying stacks of water bottles on your trip by instead boiling water (if the tap water is unsafe to drink) or bringing water purification tablets.

Natural dangers in French Polynesia

Pack sandals or a pair of sandshoes for walking on coral so you don't cut your feet, and look out for poisonous stonefish. Coral poisoning can be very serious, so if you do get caught up on coral while diving or snorkeling, seek medical attention as soon as you can.

Cyclone season in French Polynesia runs from November to April. However, tropical storms and cyclones may occur at other times of the year due to the tropical location. Stay up to date with weather alerts, and here are our top tips on safety during wild weather.

Located on the southwestern coast of the island of Tahiti, Teahupo'o is one of the most renowned wave breaks in the world. The surf break often reaches up to 9ft (3m), and sometimes as high as 22ft (7m). If you aren't an experienced surfer, don't even try this wave break. Stick to somewhere with waves that are suited to your skill level, or ask the locals for their top surf spots.

Encounters with sharks in the lagoon will be most likely when scuba diving or snorkeling but don't panic, even the sharks here are pretty laid back and are unlikely to be aggressive. Same for the stingrays. However, moray eels hide deep in the corals, and they do bite and can cause serious injury.

Getting around safely

If you're a typical resort dweller, you'll find everything you need at the resort, but if you step outside the confines of the resort to see the real Tahiti, the developed islands now have modern buses for transport, sadly replacing Le Truck, which was basically a truck with wooden bench seats.

Taxis are available, but expensive.

You can hire a car, 4WD, scooter or bicycle. Your driver's license from home is all you need. But if you decide to try your hand at a motorcycle or scooter, make sure you have the proper license. Being on holiday doesn't magically give you the right (or ability) to ride on two wheels. Driving unlicensed may cause problems if you have to make a travel insurance claim for injury.

Before you buy a travel insurance policy, check your government travel warnings and health advice – there may be no travel insurance cover for locations with a government travel ban or health advice against travel.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/M Swiet Productions	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>158995448	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>A woman snorkeling in Tahiti</imageCaption>

How safe is Tonga for travelers? Find out about island crime, local laws, natural dangers and travel hygiene tips to stay safe.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The Pacific island nation of Tonga is an exciting destination to travel, especially for whale watchers.

With a relatively low crime rate and strict Christian beliefs, this is what travelers need to know to stay out of trouble.

Modesty and respect will go a long way in Tonga. Stay vigilant to protect yourself from any trouble, and find out how to avoid offending the locals with these tips.

Theft and petty crime in Tonga

Petty crime and theft can occur in Tonga. Common sense and the usual travel precautions of securing valuables and not flashing desirable items around should be enough to keep you safe.

Home invasions and property theft are an issue, so keep your doors and windows locked when you leave your accommodation.

Violent robberies are rare, however use caution when walking around at night. Travel in groups and avoid isolated areas and suspicious people.

Sexual assault involving travelers is rare, but has been reported in areas including public beaches. Women travelers should travel in groups at night, and avoid secluded beaches while alone.

Local customs in Tonga

Be more aware of local customs than alert for criminal behavior in Tonga. Society is religious in Tonga, and most people are very conservative.

While Tongans are very friendly people, they are more reserved than people you may have met on other nearby Pacific Island nations.

Take extra care to learn about social etiquette cues, and always do your best to engage politely without offending.

Homosexuality is illegal in Tonga, and even a simple display of affection between same-sex couples could lead to trouble. The law isn't necessarily enforced, however you will likely get unwelcome attention and treatment. Do your best to keep public displays of affection private – and that goes for heterosexual couples, too.

Dress modestly in Tonga

Dress in a conservative manner while traveling around Tonga, by wearing modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees and not showing off cleavage.

Wearing all black means you are in mourning, and it is considered disrespectful by the Tongans to wear this if you are not grieving.

Pack a conservative bathing suit if you plan to go swimming at public beaches, and you should never go topless. You can wear whatever you like if you are staying at a resort. Men also should not take their shirts off unless they are at a resort.

Businesses are closed on Sundays

Many travelers have learned to their dismay that Tonga's strict Sabbath observance means many business are closed on Sundays. Sunday prayers are practiced by the majority of the island's inhabitants and this observance extends to restaurants, cafes and pubs in addition to sporting events and leisure activities like snorkeling. Even exercising is considered illegal on Sunday, unless you are, once again, staying on a resort.

Drugs and drinking kava

Unsurprisingly, drugs are illegal in Tonga, and any import or export can get you up to 30 years – yes, you read that number right – in prison or a hard labor camp and/or a several hundred thousand dollar fine. Those who grow or sell drugs can face similar penalties. Know that at least these laws don't apply to the local drink Kava, which is said to have a narcotic effect.

Cyclones and earthquakes in Tonga

Tonga is an island nation in the Pacific, and is prone to several forms of natural disaster. It does sit on an active earthquake zone, but normally only ever experiences minor tremors. The earthquake zone does mean tsunamis are more frequent here.

In September 2009, these deadly forces met when an earthquake near Samoa triggered a tsunami that made landfall on Tonga, resulting in nine deaths.

Cyclones also can happen in Tonga, and cyclone season usually runs from November to April, though these weather events can happen in other months, too. During these storms, flooding and severe winds can occur, and power and transportation service may cease.

Swim safely in Tonga

Even if you are a strong swimmer, do not get too confident on the beaches of Tonga. There are coral reefs that are particularly sharp in Tongatapu and Pangaimotu. Strong rip currents can endanger even the best swimmers. Fatalities have occurred in the past here due to strong currents.

Certain spots are more hazardous than others, and it is advisable to ask locals where these locations are.

Jellyfish stings can occur in the waters around Tonga due to bluebottles (also known as the Indo-Pacific 'Man o' War'). If you are stung, ask for an ice pack or apply vinegar to the sting – do not use alcohol.

Wildlife dangers in Tonga

Sea snakes are present in Tonga's waters, but are unlikely to attack. Poisonous cone shells near coral reefs can sting you and, in severe cases, lead to fainting and trouble breathing.

On land, there are other critters than can string you, such as the Molokai, or centipede, which likes to crawl into shoes. Check your shoes before putting them on if they have been sitting outside.

Wild dogs roam the islands, and are usually safe when alone, but can be aggressive in packs. Pretending to throw a stone at the pack of dogs to distract them (but don't actually throw anything to harm the animal).

Stay healthy and avoid getting sick

Beyond the normal list of island sicknesses, there isn't much to worry about in Tonga. Check with your travel doctor before you go for the most relevant list of vaccinations and booster shots that you may require – and aim to visit your doctor at least eight weeks before departure.

Dengue fever is a risk in Tonga, and to avoid this travelers should always protect themselves from mosquito bites. Try to wear long-sleeved clothing at night, wear insect repellent at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and avoid leaving windows open while sleeping.

Ciguatera poisoning is unpredictable, and can affect what is usually a safe and edible fish in most other countries. It happens most often in meat-eating reef fish, such as red snapper, Spanish mackerel, or barracuda and moray eels. When you're searching for seafood on the menu, perhaps avoid ordering a dish containing these types of fish. There is no way to identify if ciguatera is present, until you fall ill with an upset stomach, itching, feeling feint, a slow pulse or a temperature.

The water in Tonga can be unpredictable. It's best to ask your hotel or restaurant if they use filtered water. Sometimes they'll use collected rain water, which can pose problems.

Use caution when eating anything containing fresh produce such as salads, and when preparing your own food, peel all fruits and vegetables before eating. Stick to food that is cooked and served hot to avoid contamination.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/Susanne Michaela Huss	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>952059878	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Sailing boats anchored off of the Robinson Crusoe Island Manihiki in Tonga's Vav'u Island group</imageCaption>
