The Bahamas is open to international tourism but flight availability is restricted and strict protocols are in place for travelers.

Protocols for entry

Effective May 1, 2021, international visitors traveling to The Bahamas from other countries who are fully vaccinated and have passed the two-week immunity period will be exempt from testing requirements for entry and inter-island travel. Proof of vaccination must be submitted via the Travel Health Visa portal.

Travelers who are not fully vaccinated will be required to follow all existing entry testing requirements including:

applying for a Bahamas Travel Health Visa –applications take up to 48 hours to process and should be completed with adequate lead time

providing proof of negative PCR COVID-19 test taken no more than five (5) days prior to arrival

conducting rapid COVID-19 antigen testing if they are staying in The Bahamas for longer than four (4) nights and five (5) days

Travelers are required to opt-in to a health insurance which covers them for the duration of their stay. (Here's why getting additional travel insurance is a good idea.)

Local restrictions in The Bahamas

A public state of emergency is in place until at least May 2021. All residents and visitors must adhere to health and safety protocols on-island such as mask wearing, social distancing, and frequent hand washing. A curfew is in effect from 10pm to 5am for the islands of Grand Bahama, New Providence and Paradise Island (including Rose Island) and Abaco (excluding Green Turtle Cay, Grand Cay, Man-O-War Cay, and Elbow Cay). Travel rules and other restrictions are subject to change at short notice and are available on the Office of the Prime Minister's website.

A negative PCR test result and Travel Health Visa are required for inter-island travel from Abaco, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama, Harbour Island, or New Providence. Effective April 23, 2021, Bahamian citizens and residents who are fully vaccinated – after receiving their second dose – will be exempt from COVID-19 testing requirements when travelling inter-island. Proof of vaccination must be submitted via the travel health visa portal.

Wearing a face mask in public spaces is mandatory, and all travelers must follow physical distancing of 6ft (2m).

The Bahamas is an archipelago with more than 700 islands and cays, spread over 100,000 square miles, which means conditions and instances of the virus can be different on each of the 16 islands available to welcome visitors. Travelers should continue to check the status of their island destination before travelling, by visiting Bahamas.com/travelupdates.

Hurricane Dorian - 3 September, 2019

Hurricane Dorian struck the northern Bahamas on Sunday night as a slow-moving Category 5 storm, with winds of up to 200mph. The storm has caused widespread destruction and flooding in Grand Bahama and the Abacos Islands. An estimated 13,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed. Flooding conditions have also been reported in New Providence, which includes Nassau and Paradise Island, as well as Eleuthera, Andros, Exuma, Cat Island, and Long Island.

The full impact of the storm won't be known for days, and while the center of the hurricane has moved on, heavy winds, rain, and storm surge may continue in the region through today. Currently, the airports in Grand Bahama and Abaco are closed. Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau remains open, but travelers should expect significant cancellations and delays. Anyone planning to visit should check directly with airilines, hotels, and cruise lines regarding possible impacts to travel plans.

If you're in the area, please check with authorities, follow any official warnings, and listen to local news reports to monitor the situation. Failure to comply with directives from government authorities means you won't be covered by travel insurance. Also be aware: now that this is a known event, it is no longer possible to purchase travel insurance to cover it. To discuss your coverage, please contact us at World Nomads.

How to survive a hurricane

The absolutely best way to survive a hurricane is to avoid one. Get away from it, but if you make the decision to leave make that decision early. Do not leave it until the last minute because you may find yourself caught without proper shelter.

If you decide to stay and "ride it out" it is advisable to get to an authorized shelter. The locations of these will be broadcast, or locals will know where they are. If there is no shelter, prepare to "shelter in place" in an internal room without windows.

Once a "storm watch" has been issued, make sure you are prepared in the event that the watch becomes a "warning."

Fill the gas tank of your car.

Check batteries in flashlights and radios.

Have extra batteries on hand.

Secure all doors and windows.

Close shutters or board up the windows.

Have extra supplies on hand such as non-perishable food, clean drinking water, a half-gallon of water per person/per day (enough for a couple of days), and prescription drugs.

During the storm

Never go out during the storm. The winds can send flying debris into you causing injury and even death.

Stay away from windows and doors.

Keep on the alert for additional storm warnings. Hurricanes are known to spawn tornadoes so be prepared to take cover if one should strike.

While the storm is in progress avoid using electrical appliances.

Stay off the telephone.

All pets should be secure in carriers. The storm will be a frightening experience for them as well, and they could injure themselves or you if they panic.

Do not light candles or lanterns; they could get blown over causing a fire.

The eye of the storm passing over could make you think the storm is over when the worst is still yet to come. Only use this calm in an extreme emergency to make critical repairs.

Only after an official "all clear" has been issued is it safe to come out.

After the storm

Beware of downed power lines and gas leaks.

Stay away from heavily damaged areas.

Listen to your radio for instructions.

Hurricane Irma – September 2017

Hurricane Irma – September 2017

Now classified as a Category 5, Hurricane Irma made landfall Wednesday morning in the Eastern Caribbean and has been moving westward. The storm is expected to strike the southern Bahamas on Friday, with possible storm surges of 15-20 feet. A mandatory evacuation of islands in the hurricane's path is currently underway.

Travel warnings have been issued for Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts, and Nevis, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Sint Maarten, British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra, Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to the northern border with Haiti, Guadeloupe, the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The United States has declared states of emergency in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Aside from extremely strong winds, Hurricane Irma is likely to create a storm surge of 11 feet or more, and large, breaking waves. Heavy rains could cause life-threating flash floods and mudslides.

Be aware that now this is a named hurricane and emergencies have been declared in several places it may not be possible to purchase travel insurance to cover this event.
However, while many tour operators appear fun and safe, much of the adventure tourism here is not strictly regulated, causing a few concerns for visitors.

Watercraft Safety in the Bahamas

Fishing and Hunting in the Bahamas

Shark Diving in the Bahamas

The Swimming Pigs of Exumas

Bahamas Hurricane Season

Watercraft Safety in the Bahamas

Tourists are hurt or killed each year because of using watercraft incorrectly or carelessly. In May 2011, an American cruise ship tourist was killed in a jet-ski accident. Another tourist was injured.

Water parks are not entirely safe, either. In 2000, a 12-year-old boy was killed when he was sucked into the drain of the Atlantis Resort lagoon. In April 2011, a 5-year-old Canadian tourist was killed in the same resort‘s water park.

Many of the tours offered on the islands are operated by independent individuals, who do not share liability with resorts or accommodations. While the resort may help you set up tours, know that its staff are not responsible for any injuries or accidents that occur. If you do decide to rent jet skis or go on another water sport adventure, ensure the company is reputable and provides liability and personal insurance coverage.

Also make sure you know how to properly use the watercraft before riding it. If you take out a travel insurance policy, make sure that you are covered for any events before you partake in them.

If taking a boat in Bahamian waters, there are a few hazards to be aware of. Coral reefs line the Bahamian shores, and you can easily damage your boat or water vessel if you get too close to them. If you find a beach to relax on, spray yourself with repellent to avoid “no-see-ums" – pestering bugs that resemble fleas.

Another issue in the waters, is crime being conducted by some watercraft. Some boats and vessels trafficking drugs may look amiss, while others will seem harmless. There have been drug smuggling and human trafficking reported on the islands, that can occur by boat.

The islands are considered by some to be ideal locations for these kinds of activities because there are remote nooks and crannies where few people are present. As a tourist, you won‘t probably have run-ins with these kinds of criminal activities, but it‘s still a risk if going out on a boat.

Fishing and Hunting in the Bahamas

There are certain fishing practices that are illegal surrounding the islands' waters. Long-line fishing, catching crawfish and bringing in other fish when they are too small, out of season or in protected areas, are all against the law.

On land, hunting certain types of birds is also illegal. They can only be hunted in season and requite a special license. Hunting of any other kind is banned in the Bahamas, as there are numerous protected animals in the area. Tourists can and have been arrested for hunting certain endangered animals.

Shark Diving in the Bahamas

One of the major draw cards of the Bahamas is diving with sharks. There are 2 places which are considered the best spots to get up close and personal with Tiger sharks and Hammerhead sharks.

A tiger shark swimming around. Photo credit: iStock/NaluPhoto

Bimini Island

Want to dive with Hammerheads? Bimini is the place to go.

The crystal clear waters allow for brilliant photos of these amazing ocean predators as they cruise around gracefully, occasionally having a look at you. Bull sharks and Nurse sharks will also come join in on the action. The Great Hammerhead sharks arrive in February and then migrate north in April.

Grand Bahama

If you want to see tiger sharks while diving, Tiger Beach, on Grand Bahama is the best destination.

Many of the tiger sharks at Tiger Beach have been frequenting the place for years and have become accustomed to having divers around. However it is important to note that these creatures are still wild animals and do deserve an element of respect. Many of the dive operators understand the sharks and will help divers learn how to interact with them without causing stress to the sharks.

The Swimming Pigs of Exumas

Pigs in the Bahamas. Photo credit: iStock/shalamov

Despite everyone flocking to the Bahamas to go swimming with pigs on the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay, there are a few reasons you should skip this experience. It's a huge tourist trap, but also the pigs poop everywhere, and can bite.

These feral curly tailed pigs aren't looked after well either, so instead of going there for a few photos with the pigs, find a quiet beach to swim by yourself.

Bahamas Hurricane Season

Hurricane season, like other Caribbean islands, runs from June to November, and even far-off storms can make waters very rough for boating or swimming.

Rip currents are possible, and if you get caught in one, signal for help and swim parallel to the shore to avoid getting pulled in further.

The Bahamas is a prime area for hurricanes to form due to its tropical location and warm waters.

Often, there will be strong winds, large swells, flooding and significant storm surges.

Hurricane Joaquin tore its way through the Carribean in 2015, and weakened just past Bermuda. It caused significant damage to many Caribbean island nations including the Bahamas, where over 500 people became trapped by flood waters, electricity services were disrupted, homes and infrastructure damaged and airport operations disabled.

It is estimated that the storm surge was up to 5.5m in height and over 7000 people were affected.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/erikruthoff	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>509176746	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>The calm and shallow turquoise waters in Exumas archipelago in The Bahamas are perfect for sailing, yachting, and island hopping in the Caribbean</imageCaption>

Avoid all the crafty con artists in The Bahamas with these tips from Diedre McLeod, who has navigated all the scams herself and now shares her advice.

https://www.worldnomads.com

There’s a general saying among travelers that “there are more good people in the world than bad”. After spending some of my childhood in The Bahamas and forming deep friendships, I can confirm this statement is true of this picturesque chain of islands.

However, you might also meet a helpful local who turns out to be not so genuine. Before you know it, you’ve been scammed in The Bahamas.

Stay safe by spotting these common scams in The Bahamas:

Bump and grab scam

Taxi scams

Accommodation scams

Timeshare scam

ATM scams

Jet ski scam

Hair braiding scam

Fraudulent tours and tour guides

Higher prices for visitors

1. Bump and grab scam

This happens mainly in crowded areas of The Bahamas. Someone distracts you by bumping into you and then promptly proceeds to pick your pocket.

How to avoid it: Don’t carry your valuables in one place, use anti-theft backpacks or walk with your backpack in front of you. You’ll more likely see if someone is trying to get into your bag.

2. Taxi scams

Taxis are generally well-regulated, especially in Nassau and Freeport. Most taxis have meters so there should be little need to negotiate fees. If a taxi driver claims his meter is broken or does not want to turn it on, insist it is turned on or take another taxi.

Look out for taxi meters running very quickly and so you are likely to be overcharged. Check with your hotel or get the estimated fare for your journey beforehand so you know what to pay.

Some taxi drivers take a longer route to increase the cost of the ride. Use Google Maps or Maps.Me (download prior to leaving an area with Wi-Fi) to follow along, and if you notice the driver is going a different route, point to your map and insist they go that way.

How to avoid it: This is a no-brainer, but never take unlicensed taxis. No matter how good the deal seems, it’s always better to err on the safe side and go with a licensed, reputable taxi.

3. Accommodation scams

Choosing the right place to stay comes down to understanding your needs, knowing your budget and using the right platforms to book your accommodation.

If you are being asked to make payments offline or off the platform, this should signal that something may be wrong. Paying offline or off-platform increases your risk of paying for an accommodation that may not exist or paying a higher price.

How to avoid it: Make sure to book reservations or home stays on reputable websites to avoid being scammed and paying too much.

Locals hanging out on Bay Street in Nassau. Photo credit: Getty Images/Glowimages

4. Timeshare scam

Buying a timeshare means you get to co-own a share, or piece, of a resort or vacation home to use at least once a year. Travelers are always on the lookout for the next best vacation and timeshare scammers are always on the lookout for eager travelers.

How the scam works: Someone will offer you a free meal if you spend 60-90 minutes of your time in a timeshare presentation. After you say yes, that’s when the real scam begins. Misleading claims about the timeshare and high-pressure sales tactics will be used to get you to say yes to owning a timeshare. Be careful not to say yes impulsively. If you’re not allowed time to reconsider and are pressured to answer on the spot, then you might be caught up in a scam.

5. ATM scams

Someone approaches the ATM just as you are about to use it and offers friendly advice on avoiding fees. This is usually the start of what I call the “Friendly ATM User” scam. The friendly local will then wait around and rob the traveler of cash as soon as they exit the ATM.

Unsuspecting travelers often fall for this trick, mistaking ulterior motives for kindness. This tends to happen at night in secluded areas.

How to avoid it: Don’t use ATMs at night, and choose ones that are located in busy areas and attached to a bank.

6. Jet ski scam

Many jet ski hire operators in The Bahamas are unregulated. They overcharge or under-deliver (calling you back before your time is complete) and may not follow proper safety regulations.

How to avoid it: Make sure you rent a jet ski with a reputable operator; one that’s recommended by your hotel or the tourist office. This scam is likely to happen in the resort areas such as Paradise Island where there are plenty of travelers.

Jet skis on Cable Beach, Nassau, The Bahamas.
7. Hair braiding scam in The Bahamas

Getting your hair braided (or cornrow as it’s called locally) is a popular way to appreciate Afro-Caribbean culture. Cornrow is deeply embedded in Bahamian culture and a great way to express yourself via your hairdo.

Unfortunately, visitors are sometimes tricked into paying high prices to get their hair braided.

A fee will be set at the beginning, then when the hairstyle is done the visitor is told the fee must be drastically increased because of the time taken or length of hair.

How to avoid it: Be sure to verify upfront that the fee charged considers estimated time and the length of your hair. Negotiate a price you are comfortable with before you get started.

8. Fraudulent tours and tour guides in The Bahamas

Offering fake tours is a popular scam. Visitors who are eager to capitalize on their precious time on the island are more likely to fall prey to a charming but overbearing guide who makes promises of an unforgettable tour.

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. On these fraudulent tours, visitors are often taken to sub-par places and then forced to pay inflated guide rates.

How to avoid it: Avoid this by sticking to licensed guides and tours that are promoted by the tourism board.

9. Higher prices for visitors

This isn’t so much a scam because it’s become common practice. You might expect prices to be higher in areas that have a high-density of travelers, but vendors at marketplaces where prices are negotiated sometimes hike the prices of their products when dealing with visitors.

The Straw Market in Nassau often has vendors who double their prices to unsuspecting travelers who are fresh off the boat.

Use your negotiating skills: A general rule of thumb is to slash the price in half to start your negotiations.

In the end, the majority of trips to The Bahamas are trouble-free and there is usually no need to be overly cautious. That said, it is always better to be alert, safe and prepared for the worst.

Most importantly, don’t forget to buy travel insurance. It’s also where I learned of the existence of pink sandy beaches, and that Bahamians have an unrivaled love for conch meat. The islands are world-renowned for their beaches, seafood, eco-friendliness and adventure activities.

Here are my top safety tips for travelers who are going to visit The Bahamas.

Safe places to go in The Bahamas

The Bahamas: is it safe for families?

Safety for LGBTQ+ travelers

Safety for solo women

Safety at night

Petty crime

Violent crime

Gun laws

Drugs and alcohol laws

High prices

Traffic in The Bahamas

Sun safety

Safe places to go in The Bahamas

Your safety needs will vary across the islands and largely depends on where you visit.

Nassau – cultural and capital city

Nassau is where 70% of locals live, and the best place to learn the customs and history of the country. While in downtown Nassau, you need to be alert and on the lookout for pickpockets and ATM scammers. However, across the bridge on Nassau Paradise Island, this resort-filled town is home to safe hotels, like the Atlantis hotel.

Be cautious when visiting the ‘Over-the-Hill’ community (south of Shirley Street) in Nassau. The community has cultural significance as the birthplace of the national festival of Junkanoo, but much of the violent crime in The Bahamas is concentrated ‘over the hill’. Avoid walking there at night, especially alone, and visit in groups if you can.

Safety on the other islands

The other islands (such as Abacos, Andros, Eleuthera, Exumas – locally called Family Islands or Out Islands) are generally safer than Nassau or New Providence, with little violent crime occurring. However, here a few things to look out for:

Make sure to book tours with reputable operators to avoid scams by fraudulent tour guides

Many jet ski operators are unregulated. Rent from those recommended by the tourist office, confirm price and allotted time before jetting off, and keep track of your time on the jet ski to avoid being called back too early

Double-check your snorkeling and diving gear to be sure they function well.

Visit outside of the rainy season

Something to consider when traveling to The Bahamas is the hurricane season, which runs from June to November, when the islands can get hit by storms. The islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama were particularly badly damaged by Hurricane Dorian in August 2019, which was the most intense tropical cyclone on record to hit The Bahamas.

Health concerns after a lot of wet weather include Chikungunya virus and Dengue Fever, the two main mosquito-borne illnesses. Pack insect repellant and apply at dawn and dusk liberally to avoid mosquitoes at their most active time.

Colorful sails on a beach on Treasure Island. Photo credit: Getty Images/Glowimages

The Bahamas: is it safe for families?

You should prioritize booking organized tours that are run by reputable companies, which will help your family stay safe while exploring The Bahamas. Other safety tips include:

Watch the heat. The Bahamas averages 83ºF (28ºC) daily. Protect your family from heat exhaustion by exploring early morning and late evening on hot days. Also, keep hydrated.

Child-proof everything. Check the height of balconies and move anything that could fall or looks potentially dangerous. Keep windows and doors locked, in case your toddler wanders out of your accommodation.

Have a code word for family members to use in high-stress situations or when they feel unsafe. For example, walking into a crowded market or street where it’s easy to become separated, saying the code word will help children be alert and stick close to older family members.

Keep constant watch of your family members, especially children, at marine parks or the beach. Using arm floats on younger children, for example, does not guarantee that your child is fully protected from drowning.

Children are prone to accidents. Consider getting travel insurance, in case of injury or accident during your activities on the islands.

Safety for LGBTQ+ travelers in The Bahamas

The Bahamas is slowly becoming LGBTQ+-friendly. Limit public displays of affection, regardless of your sexual orientation. You'll find plenty of accommodation options that are generally known for their tolerance of LGBTQ+ couples.

Safety for solo women visiting The Bahamas

There are so many beaches to discover in The Bahamas, offering different activities on each island. If you’re a woman traveling alone, here’s what you need to know to stay safe.

While the islands are considered safe for women travelers overall, consider dressing modestly for your trip

Always take precautions while out at night to ensure your safety, such as taking a licensed taxi to a club or restaurant rather than walking, particularly in Nassau

Avoid hitchhiking, walking in deserted or poorly lit areas, and walking alone at night

Some Bahamian men can be more direct in their advances and you might find yourself navigating awkward conversations with sexual innuendos. Suggesting a partner/husband is nearby can help to stop these discussions in their tracks.

Safety at night

It’s easy to get distracted wandering around a new place, soaking up the sights and making sure you maximize the hours in a day. Travelers love going drinking and clubbing in The Bahamas, and the addition of alcohol and lowered inhibitions can reduce your alertness substantially. Especially at night, be aware of your surroundings and your belongings.

Petty crime in The Bahamas

Don’t keep your valuables all in one place. Snatch-and-grab crimes involving travelers’ bags, jewelry, smartphones or cash are some of the most popular petty crimes that happen to visitors in The Bahamas. If anyone tries to rob you, hand over whatever it is they are asking for. It's not worth getting hurt.

Violent crime in The Bahamas

Most of the serious crimes committed in The Bahamas center largely in Nassau (New Providence). Violent crime, such as sexual assault, robberies and gang violence, tends to happen most in Nassau’s “Over-the-Hill” neighborhoods and are mainly targeted to Bahamians. If, however, you find yourself the victim of a violent crime, report it to the nearest police station.

Gun laws

Unsurprisingly, it's illegal to bring a gun or ammunition into the country, or have one in your possession without permission. Anyone coming by boat must leave firearms on their vessel when coming ashore and declare their firearms to Customs. Punishment for breaking these laws is strict.

Drugs and alcohol laws in The Bahamas

Drug possession and drug use are illegal in The Bahamas. The convicted can sit in jail for a while and pay large fines. That said, it's still possible that you may be offered drugs outright when you're in The Bahamas, whether it's out on the street or at the bar or club. As a result, police presence has increased in the traveler hubs for the safety of visitors.

Yes, marijuana is illegal – although it is commonly smoked by some Bahamians. Do not attempt to leave the islands with marijuana, and reconsider buying any from locals as it will be difficult to verify the quality.

You must be 18 years or older to drink alcohol in The Bahamas, but laws are often not enforced. There has been, however, more push to curb this so make sure to walk with your ID when going out for a drink.

Pay attention to your drink. Do not leave your glass unattended and make sure you watch closely when your drink is being opened or poured out for you. Spiking drinks with drugs is sometimes done to unsuspecting visitors.

High prices

The Bahamian dollar closely matches the US dollar, which means you may not get as much “bang for your buck” as you expected. In traveler hubs, like on Paradise Island, you will definitely attract higher costs for food at supermarkets or restaurants

If you want to catch a cheaper meal, then eat where locals eat. Try going to downtown areas for more affordable options

And if you feel like flexing your negotiation skills, then just steps away from the cruise ports in Nassau is the historic Straw Market. With hundreds of vendors, and a range of cultural Bahamian crafts to choose from, get ready to bargain for the best deal. There might be, however, some pushy vendors trying to sell you souvenirs as you walk through market stalls. To avoid prolonged encounters, I suggest confidently responding “not interested” to their advances and keep it moving.

Traffic in The Bahamas

You’re most likely to encounter bad traffic in the capital city of Nassau, located on New Providence Island. Whether you are driving, taking taxis, or the local bus (affectionately called jitneys) you should plan ahead.

Jitneys are everywhere, but it’s a casual service with no real timetable, so you may find yourself waiting odd time-intervals for a bus. Keep an eye out for pickpockets on jitneys.

Never take unlicensed taxis and avoid taxis with broken meters. Regulated taxis carry a yellow license plate marked with the letters “NP”.

The ferry service in The Bahamas is safe to take. It takes frequent trips between Nassau and Eleuthera, Andros, Long Island, or Grand Exuma.

There are also small boat services, called mail boats, that sail to the lesser inhabited islands. Mail boats are slow and transport goods and products; however, you can pay to hitch a ride but you won’t find much comfort.

Sun safety

The Bahamas gets about 340 sunny days per year and average temperatures of 83ºF (28ºC). You'll need to slap on plenty of sunscreen to avoid getting a sunburn. Ensure you use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the islands’ natural coral reefs.

<imageAttribution>iStock/photosvit	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>610242602	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>The Atlantis Paradise Island resort, located in the Bahamas</imageCaption>
