I’ve been making trips to the region with my family, on solo adventures, and with friends for most of my life. BC was close enough for a road trip (or a ferry ride to <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/north-america/canada/adventure-guide-to-victoria-and-vancouver-island">Vancouver Island</a>) and yet far enough away that it still held the intrigue of a foreign adventure—and all the magic that makes the Pacific Northwest so special.</p> <p>One place I kept coming back to was <a href="https://www.whistler.com/activities/">Whistler</a>. Sitting at the base of Whisler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountains, it earns a gold star for Pacific Northwest scenery and is an adventure hub all year long.</p> <p>I long-associated Whistler with winter adventures: snowy mountains, skiing, and snowboarding. Once the snow melts away, though, Whistler transforms into an entirely different place in late spring and summer. Alpine lakes, sun-soaked meadows, shadowy old-growth forests, and glacial rivers cutting through mountains keep any nature-loving, active traveler on their toes. Whistler has plenty of drive-up camping options as well, including <a href="https://www.travel-british-columbia.com/listings/riverside-whistler-a-parkbridge-camping-rv-resort/">Riverside Campground</a> in Fitzsimmons Creek and <a href="https://www.whistlerolympicpark.com/campground/campground-overview">Whistler Olympic Park Campground</a> in Callaghan Valley.</p> <h2>Mountain biking and leisurely cycling</h2> <p>If you prefer to adventure on two wheels, Whistler is notorious for its mountain biking. <a href="https://www.mountainbikingbc.ca/vancouver-coast-mountains/whistler-bike-park/">Whistler Mountain Bike Park</a> is world-famous for its steep descents through scenic forests. With over 50 miles of bike trails, there are plenty of adrenaline-pumping double backs that require expertise as well as plenty of easier paths. Newer bikers can book <a href="https://www.whistler.com/activities/biking/bike-park/">mountain biking lessons</a> to brush up on skills before barreling down the hills.</p> <p>Alternatively, opt for a lower intensity bike ride outside of the park. Gravel and road bikes are available for rental across town—and there is plenty to explore by bike. Whether you’re peddling through the village or choosing a lengthier ride along the Whistler Valley or Sea to Sky Trails, the region has many options for cycling—all that come with some epic views.</p> <h2>Whistler by water</h2> <p>Whistler’s mountainous terrain may steal the spotlight, but the area is surrounded by lakes and rivers, as well. Take a dip in an icy glacial or alpine lake after a long hike. Trust me, it’s incredibly refreshing after you heat up during your hike. Take a deep breath, jump in, and feel the rush when the cold water hits you.</p> <p>You can also spend a day dedicated to water sports and explore Whistler’s surroundings by water. Chekamus River is ideal for family-friendly rafting, with class 1 and 2 rapids. Float gently downstream while taking in the towering trees of Paradise Valley. For more adrenaline, book a <a href="https://www.whistler.com/activities/rafting/">white-water rafting adventure</a> on Green River. Bounce through class 2 and 3 rapids with views of snowy mountains along the way.</p> <p>Experience Whistler by water at a slower pace by paddling along its rivers and lakes. A popular spot is the River of Golden Dreams, which is a 5km waterway that can be traversed by canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Along the way, you will pass old growth forest, mountains, wetlands and perhaps even some wildlife. Look out for black bears, eagles, beavers, and more. </p> <p>Whistler also has plenty of sandy lakeside beaches, where you can swim, play beach volleyball, rent kayaks and paddleboards. Put spots like Wayside Park, Lost Lake, Rainbow Park, and Nita Lake on your list for a beach or lake day, as relaxed or active as you want to make it.</p> <h2>Relaxed adventures</h2> <p>If you’re after Whistler’s views but aren’t up for the more physically challenging adventures, there are plenty of ways to still enjoy it. While not as bustling as it is during winter months, <a href="https://www.whistler.com/village/">Whistler Village</a> is filled with shops, restaurants, and wine bars for a day of wandering and eating. Grab lunch or dinner on a patio and enjoy the views and late sunsets. That’s 2.5 billion more than cricket, the second most popular sport. Soccer fans are known for their loyalty, passion, creative (and sometimes profane) chants, and rituals such as <a href="https://www.premierleague.com/en/news/4379929/explained-what-is-a-tifo-banner">“tifos”.</a> These are massive banners or mosaic-like displays made of squares of cardboard that fans hold up to form words or images – the designs are planned well in advance and can fill an entire stadium.</p> <p>In June 2026, fans from around the world will bring this unique energy to the FIFA World Cup 2026. This tournament will be the largest of its kind ever held, and the first to be hosted by three nations: Canada, the US, and Mexico. 42 nations will compete in 104 matches.</p> <p>If you’re planning to attend the World Cup but haven’t experienced major soccer matches before, what can you expect at the tournament? Read on to learn how soccer culture differs between nations, and what it will be like to watch the beautiful game played on such a grand scale.</p> <h2>Differences in soccer culture between nations</h2> <h3>Mexico</h3> <p>Mexican <strong><em>fútbol</em></strong> culture is legendary. Mexico is one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world, right up there with England, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, and soccer is by far the most popular sport. Matches are noisy and boisterous affairs, and fans may end up showered with beer and popcorn.</p> <p>Joe Furey, a former drug war correspondent frequently based in Mexico, told World Nomads, “Compared to the US and Canada, when I’ve watched football in Mexico the atmosphere has been rowdier, more physical, and more continuous – chanting that doesn’t stop, drums, flags, whole sections on their feet. But it's just ritual, not a menace. And the Mexican authorities know how to police it, at least in built-up areas with larger stadiums.”</p> <p>Mexican soccer games are also family-friendly, with multiple generations in attendance – more so than Argentina or Brazil.</p> <h3>United States</h3> <p>Though many people in the US grow up playing soccer, and community soccer leagues can be seen on fields across the country, professional soccer has been relatively slow to catch on. Major League Soccer (MLS) still lags behind the national football, baseball, basketball, and hockey leagues in popularity. But the gap is closing.</p> <p>Interest in soccer is at an all-time high, fueled by interest in international leagues such as the UK’s Premier League, the recent successes of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, and the arrival of international superstars such as Lionel Messi and David Beckham on MLS teams. <a href="https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/major-league-soccer-s-30th-regular-season-brings-unmatched-fan-engagement">More than 11 million fans attended MLS matches in 2025</a>.</p> <p>And while the fervor of the fan base may not rival Mexico, there’s still plenty of passion. Avid fans of MLS teams have formed supporter groups who buy up blocks of seats at games, where they chant and create tifos.</p> <p>The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams have their own supporter group, the <a href="https://theamericanoutlaws.com/">American Outlaws</a>. They will be in full force at the FIFA World Cup 2026.</p> <p>The Mexican National Team also has a <a href="https://adage.com/studio-30/aa-mexican-national-team-advantage-every-us-brand-should-be-playing">massive and enthusiastic fan base in the US</a>, with some 65 million supporters.</p> <h3>Canada</h3> <p>MLS, like the NHL, MLB, and NBA, has teams in both the US and Canada. While soccer is the most widely played sport in Canada, MLS ranks behind professional hockey, basketball, baseball, and both American and Canadian football as a spectator sport. But, as in the US, Canadian interest in soccer is growing – and the Canadian national team has become <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/article/canadas-mens-soccer-team-earns-highest-fifa-ranking-ever/">one of the best teams in North and Central America</a>. Membership in the Voyageurs, Team Canada’s supporter group, is surging ahead of the FIFA World Cup.</p> <h2>Soccer culture at the FIFA World Cup</h2> <p>The atmosphere at World Cup stadiums might have more to do with the teams playing than with the host city or country. Each team’s set of fans will bring their own personality and traditions to the matches – for example, host cities are preparing for <a href="https://www.keranews.org/news/2025-12-17/from-a-10-000-dutch-fan-march-to-securing-a-legacy-arlington-world-cup-planning-enters-final-stage">some 10,000 members of the Orange Army</a> (fans of the Dutch team) to flood the streets as they march en masse towards the stadium.</p> <p>All stadiums have seating sections for supporters – the national teams often set aside tickets for supporter groups such as the Voyageurs. These sections will feature chanting, face paint, silly hats, flags, tifas, and high levels of enthusiasm.</p> <p>In other sections of the stadium, many fans might not have a strong preference for either team but are there for the experience. If fans bought tickets before the draw that determines who plays who in the opening matches, they wouldn’t have known which teams they’d end up watching. (I fall into this category – I’m American and my husband is Dutch, but the match we’ll be watching is Team Paraguay vs. Australia’s Socceroos.) In any case, the atmosphere will be electric.</p> <p>The level of passion may be just as high at the Fan Festivals and Fan Zones. These events, put on by the host cities, are typically free and open to the public. The 2026 Fan Festivals will take place in iconic locations such as the <a href="https://losangelesfwc26.com/fifa-fan-festival-los-angeles/">Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum</a> and Mexico City’s enormous Zócalo Plaza and <a href="https://www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/story/2025-12-05/host-mexico-city-declares-itself-soul-of-world-cup">may draw crowds up to 100,000</a>. Reservations will likely be required, and security will be tight. <a href="https://losangelesfwc26.com/los-angeles-world-cup-26-fan-zones/">Fan Zones</a> are smaller events in neighborhoods around the host cities. Crowds will likely be smaller, and security less strict.</p> <p>These events will feature live broadcasts of all the matches (not just those in the host city) and draw thousands of locals, domestic tourists, and international travelers who want to cheer on their national team with other like-minded fans.</p> <p>Fan Zones won’t just be happening in host cities – they’ll also be held in cities across the host nations and around the world.</p> <h3>Team rivalries</h3> <p>The energy at any given match or fan festival will also depend heavily on the teams facing each other and how close the tournament is to the final. Certain soccer rivalries are especially contentious, including Brazil vs. Argentina, Serbia vs. Croatia, Germany vs. Netherlands – and USA vs. Mexico.</p> <p>The <a href="https://soccerpost.com/blogs/news/the-history-of-dos-a-cero">USA vs. Mexico rivalry</a> dates to 1934, but heated up in the 90s when professional soccer finally took off in the USA and matches actually became competitive. A couple of pivotal 2-0 victories by the USA stoked the fire over the following decades, leading US fans to taunt the Mexican team with chants of “<em>Dos a Cero</em>.”</p> <p>The rivalry between the USA and Canada, while not as intense, dates back all the way to 1885, when the USA played its first-ever international match against Canada. The two countries currently have the biggest international hockey rivalry, having faced off in multiple Olympic finals and semifinals – most recently in the 2026 Olympics in Milan – and the current political climate between the two nations <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6216009/2025/03/19/usmnt-rivalry-canada-mexico-concacaf-nations-league/">may also increase the animosity</a> between soccer fans.</p> <p>To prevent hooliganism at the World Cup, fans with a history of violence <a href="https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/uk-travel-ban-violent-man-city-chelsea-fans-during-club-world-cup-2025-04-02/">will be banned</a> from traveling to the tournament. The US State Department has issued a <a href="https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/mexico.html">travel advisory of Level 2: Use increased caution</a> for Mexico, the same level as Spain and Sweden. However, some areas are best avoided due to the risk of kidnapping and drug cartel violence.</p> <h3>Cartel violence in Mexico</h3> <p><a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/north-america/mexico/the-truth-behind-drug-violence">Drug cartels and organized crime</a> are an unfortunate reality in Mexico, particularly in certain states and border areas.</p> <p>In late February 2026, cartel violence in Mexico made international headlines when Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, known as El Mencho, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/22/world/americas/jalisco-new-generation-cartel-leader-killed.html">was killed in the state of Jalisco</a>. In retaliation, cartel members set fire to vehicles and businesses and created roadblocks in at least 13 states. Tourists in some regions, including the popular seaside resort town of Puerto Vallarta, were told to shelter in place, and numerous airlines cancelled flights.</p> <p>The chaos has since died down. Former drug war correspondent <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/about/contributors/joseph-furey">Joe Furey</a> told World Nomads, “I doubt there's much more danger of cartel retaliation. What we saw was proof of loyalty, nothing more – necessary bluster.”</p> <p>“Cartels are, at root, financial organizations,” he pointed out. “Their money is not confined to drugs, extortion, and other overtly illegal rackets. It’s also washed and reinvested through legitimate businesses and professional laundering networks.”</p> <p>In that way, the World Cup is an economic opportunity for cartels. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, author of a new book on Mexican cartels, says she thinks the cartels <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7067411/2026/02/24/mexico-cartel-violence-fifa-world-cup-playoffs/">are likely to keep a low profile</a> during the event, so as not to drive away tourists.</p> <h3>Tourist zones</h3> <p>Most of the cartel-related violence is related to turf wars between rival gangs, and typically happens away from tourist areas, as local authorities go to great lengths to keep those areas safe. Though there have been isolated cases where tourists were caught in the crossfire, sticking to resort areas and tourist zones is still one of the best ways to stay out of trouble.</p> <h3>Government travel advisories</h3> <p>Due in part to cartel violence, the US State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel travel advisory for the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Often, the most dangerous areas are places most tourists will never go.</p> <h3>The threat of gun violence</h3> <p>Gun laws in the US are less strict than in countries such as the UK or Australia, but regulations <a href="https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/">vary by state</a>. Wait times in emergency rooms can be long, and the cost of care is high.</p> <h3>Visa issues</h3> <p>New regulations and executive orders from the Trump Administration have complicated matters for many international visitors.</p> <p>Residents of the 42 <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program">Visa Waiver</a> countries can apply for a visa online using the <a href="https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/">Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)</a>. Fans from other countries will require a B1/B2 visitor visa.</p> <p>The State Department has set up a <a href="https://www.state.gov/fifa-world-cup-26-visas">FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (PASS)</a> to expedite visa interviews for fans who bought their tickets directly from FIFA. However, having a ticket does not guarantee a visa will be issued. And in December 2025, Trump <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IN12631">issued a proclamation</a> suspending or limiting visas for foreign nationals from 39 countries. Several of these nations have teams participating in the World Cup. Many city officials expressed concerns about <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/02/26/world-cup-cities-security-funding-00801959">running out of time to prepare,</a> and some cities quietly <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/world-cup-faces-funding-issues-as-us-host-cities-quietly-scale-back-events/ar-AA1XdkEF?gemSnapshotKey=GMBE0BDFBF-snapshot-2&uxmode=ruby&cvid=69b8627eb7934bf48e3173229f41f916&ei=15">scaled back their Fan Festivals or planned events</a>.</p> <p>On March 12, the Department of Homeland Security finally <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/12/dhs-signs-off-on-world-cup-security-funding-a-day-after-trump-infantino-meeting-00826715">signed off on release of the funds</a>. But host cities may still need to scramble to get all their security measures and staff in place.</p> <h3>ICE at the World Cup</h3> <p>According to acting director Todd Lyons, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will form a “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7038337/2026/02/11/world-cup-usa-ice-security/">key part of the overall security apparatus</a> for the World Cup.” ICE officials have said their role at major events is intelligence coordination rather than immigration enforcement. However, at the time of writing, the Trump Administration had not ruled out conducting ICE raids at World Cup matches.</p> <p>On March 18, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7130431/2026/03/19/world-cup-2026-ice-bills-congress/">members of Congress introduced bills</a> to prevent immigration enforcement within a mile of World Cup stadiums or Fan Festivals or on public transit during the tournaments, but passage of these bills is uncertain. For now, fans should expect an ICE presence in all US host cities.</p> <p>Fans, whether visiting or local, should steer clear of protests or altercations involving ICE. Non-American citizens are advised to carry proof of their legal status – including passports and visas – with them to the tournament.</p> <h3>Public transit in World Cup cities</h3> <p>While the US is not as well known for its transit systems as many other nations, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/23/fifa-world-cup-transportation-00698551">most of the host cities offer direct public transport to the stadium</a>. A Balinese money changer giving her Indonesian currency counted these notes right in front of her. Then he skilfully slid one-third of them under the counter. So she walked away with just two-thirds of the amount she was due. Avoid this scam by only using money changers inside banks, or major hotels.</li> <li><strong>Taxi scams</strong> – Being overcharged by taxis is particularly common at Bali and Jakarta airports. When tourists leave the arrivals hall they’re often approached by fake taxi drivers, who have rigged meters, or add hefty additional charges at journeys’ end. Instead, many are becoming strategic splurgers, carefully managing their budgets while still spending more on the experiences that matter most.</p> <p>The findings highlight clear regional and generational trends shaping how travelers plan to spend money on vacations in 2026.</p> <h3>Key Findings</h3> <p><strong>West Coast = Spend Coast</strong><br /> Travelers living on the West Coast are the most likely to splurge on travel this summer, followed closely by residents of the Mid-Atlantic region.</p> <p><strong>Men Are Less Likely to Stick to the Budget</strong><br /> While 75% of men say they plan a travel budget (compared to 63% of women), more than half admit they are still likely to splurge. When my mom first visited me while I was living in northern <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/europe/spain/going-urban-a-guide-to-spains-top-cities">Spain</a> in 2013, it was her first time in Europe as an adult. She was eager to sightsee, taste new foods, sip wine on terraces and people-watch past her typical bedtime. She didn't have a strict routine, nor did she want to be in bed by 10:30 pm. When I expressed my surprise, she replied with a big smile, “I'm on vacation.” I experienced a different and more relaxed version of my mom.</p> <p>We’ve traveled together a few more times since then—in Southern Italy and Croatia—and each trip shifted our dynamic. In Spain’s Basque Country, she was on my turf and relied on me to translate, navigate public transit, and choose where to eat and explore. But in <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/europe/croatia/8-things-i-wish-i-knew-before-going-to-croatia">Croatia</a>, we were equals in an unfamiliar place, and without my usual role as guide, we hit a few bumps before realizing we needed to reset our expectations. Prices could be higher and you won’t have as many options.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>Discuss budget: </strong>Talking about money, including where you want to splurge and what you prefer to <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/practical/top-travel-tips-from-an-expert">save money</a> on, is essential for an enjoyable and amicable trip.</li> </ul> <h2 id="travel-styles">Determine what travel styles you are comfortable with</h2> <p>Knowing how you plan to get around is essential to minimizing any conflicts or misunderstandings. Think about your energy levels, goals, and budget. If you're traveling in the United States, renting a car may be needed, while trips to a European city are typically easy to get around, either by walking or public transit. For example, my mom enjoys taking public transport because it gives her a window into the daily lives of locals and is more economical. Check in with your parents to see if they are comfortable with walking, taking public transport or if they prefer a taxi. </p> <ul> <li><strong>Address any concerns your parents may have:</strong> Know when it's okay to encourage one option over another and when to respect each other's boundaries. If a parent expresses fear of taking public transit, talk it through and be respectful of their concerns. It’s usually not worth the fight just to save a few dollars instead of taking a taxi.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>Mobility or accessibility issues</strong>: Some public transport options, like a subway or metro, may not be ideal because lifts aren't always available. Getting to the platform may require walking up or down a lot of stairs.</li> </ul> <h2 id="downtime">Build downtime into your itinerary</h2> <p>It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of planning a trip and wanting to see as many sights as possible. Once you arrive, you may realize that distances are further than you anticipated, your energy levels are lower due to jetlag, or you're tired from walking more than you're used to. Incorporating downtime into your plans makes for a more enjoyable trip and lessens potential disappointment or resentment for having to cut things out at the last minute. Plus, downtime allows you to add any activities, such as festivals or events, or even a museum you may not have known about, to your schedule if you feel up for it. </p> <ul> <li><strong>Minimize overloading the itinerary</strong>: Having a lighter schedule means not having to race from one activity to another, which is exhausting and harder to enjoy a trip, especially for an older adult. </li> </ul> <h2 id="recharge">Designate time alone to recharge</h2> <p>Everyone can benefit from some alone time to recharge and relax, no matter how much you enjoy your parents' company. It doesn't need to be a whole or half day, simply adding an hour or two each day can be helpful for each person to tend to their interests, whether it's writing in a journal, reading a book, organizing their photos, posting to social media or taking a nap. When I traveled with my mom in Spain and in Croatia, it wasn't until a full week in that we realized our only break from each other was when we were sleeping. After that, we made sure each day we had at least an hour to be on our own to do whatever we felt like. </p> <ul> <li><strong>Consider doing some activities on your own: </strong>If one person has a preference for visiting an art museum, and the other prefers shopping, part ways for a couple of hours to do what you like.</li> </ul> <p>Traveling with a parent as an adult isn’t always seamless, but with a little communication and flexibility, it can become one of the most meaningful ways to connect. Before you go: consider travel insurance</h2> <p>Consider travel insurance for your trip, and research how their Emergency Assistance team could assist you in the case of civil unrest. Does the plan offer evacuations, if needed? Could the team help you with rebooking or offer reimbursement if your trip is interrupted? Read your policy and keep the Emergency Assistance team’s phone number easily accessible. It’s natural to consider booking the next flight out of town, but before you flee, pause to evaluate the situation. Sometimes it’s best to just hunker down in your hotel while getting all the latest updates. In many instances, rising tensions may deescalate and you won’t find yourself on the road during the chaos.</p> <p>Violence or unrest may be isolated to specific regions or cities, and not impact the location you’re in. Election-related unrest may simmer down—or it could trigger a widespread movement that topples the government. Cross-country attacks may be one-off, or they could escalate into a full-scale war. Evaluate each situation individually and proceed accordingly.</p> <h2 id="alert-parties">5. During civil unrest: Alert essential parties as soon as unrest breaks out</h2> <p>While you don’t always need to take drastic action immediately, there are a few important steps to ensure you’re prepared for what happens next. At the first sign of violence or growing unrest, alert essential parties where you are and of the situation. Inform your embassy, which can assist you with emergency evacuation plans if necessary. If you have travel insurance, call their emergency assistance line as soon as possible, as they may be able to help. Also be sure to let family or friends know where you are; they could assist with gathering information or changing plans.</p> <h2 id="low-profile">6. During civil unrest: Keep a low profile and avoid major tourist sites and protests</h2> <p>Major tourist sites are often targets of attacks. If there’s escalating unrest, stick close to your accommodation until you have a clearer understanding of the situation.</p> <p>Places to avoid during civil unrest:</p> <ul> <li>Crowded markets</li> <li>Popular tourist attractions</li> <li>Metro stations</li> <li>Areas near embassies and government buildings</li> <li>Anywhere with crowds</li> </ul> <p>If there are protests happening, avoid them. Protests could be targeted for attacks, or you may get caught in the crossfire of a violent police response. Foreigners partaking in anti-government protests may also be arrested and treated poorly.</p> <p>Same goes for political discussions, online or offline. Avoid joining in on conversations about regional politics with locals or fellow travelers. Keep a low profile digitally, as well, refraining from criticizing local authorities on social media sites that might bring unwanted attention.</p> <h2 id="restrictions">7. During civil unrest: Stay updated with current events and restrictions</h2> <p>During the onset of a protest movement or following a contested election, governments may issue temporary restrictions. It’s critical you know this information; ask your hotel front desk how best to get the latest updates. Curfews might be mandated, public transportation routes and telecommunications may be suspended or limited, and certain roads or sites could be closed.</p> <h2 id="go-bag">8. During civil unrest: Have a ‘to-go’ bag</h2> <p>In extreme situations, you may need to evacuate your destination. This is hard to prepare for, as each situation is so different. But, you can prepare your ‘go bag’. You don’t want to be hauling a gigantic suitcase around as you are trying to leave an area quickly. Be sure you have a backpack that you can stuff with just the essentials. In the Lofoten Islands, I’d go to bed layered like a human onion and still wake up some mornings wondering if my toes were still attached.</p> <ul> <li>Insulate from below. Cold rises from the car floor or ground, sucking heat from your body. Even a thin foam mat makes a huge difference. Stack blankets underneath, I always reach for a wool blanket, heavy and cosy, that traps heat better than synthetics. Keeping the inside of the car dry is critical; any moisture will sap warmth overnight.</li> <li>Layer smart. As a photographer, I’ve learned the hard way: camera batteries die instantly if left out.
