At the same time, safety can vary across the country, with some areas among the safest in Southeast Asia, and others the most dangerous. Here’s a guide to help you stay safe while exploring the Philippines.</p> <h2>Why the Philippines is considered a safe destination</h2> <p><a href="https://philippinetourism.co/">Tourism</a> is incredibly important to the Philippines’ economy, accounting for 20% of its <a href="https://asean2026.gov.ph/post/view/?title=wttc-philippines-among-top-tourism-economies-in-gdp-contribution-and-job-generation">GDP</a> in 2025. So Filipino authorities try to ensure safety in its popular tourist enclaves, like Boracay, Palawan, and Manila’s Ayala Triangle. Such areas are commonly patrolled by armed police or private security. This is part of the Philippines’ strong tourism infrastructure which also includes:</p> <ul> <li>Well-connected international airports.</li> <li>A vast array of accommodation.</li> <li>Endless variety of restaurants and bars.</li> <li>Cheap public transport - taxis, trains, buses.</li> <li>Excellent standard of English spoken by locals.</li> </ul> <h2>Is Manila safe for travelers?</h2> <p>Manila is gargantuan, home to 27 million people, equal to the population of Australia. Its suburbs range greatly, from slums, to gated communities of mansions. So tourist safety fluctuates enormously, based on the following locations.</p> <p><strong>Ayala Triangle</strong> - I’ve rarely felt safer anywhere in Southeast Asia than in downtown Manila’s rich, modern <a href="https://www.ayalatriangle.com/">Ayala Triangle</a> area, lined by fancy shopping centres and plush condos, and patrolled by armed private security.</p> <p><strong>Intramuros</strong> – Manila’s best tourist attraction, <a href="https://intramuros.gov.ph/visitors/">Intramuros</a> is a 16<sup>th</sup> century citadel built by the occupying Spaniards. By day, it’s a safe area to wander and sightsee, although by night it becomes far more dangerous.</p> <p><strong>Malate</strong> – My first time in Manila I made the mistake of staying in Malate. I assumed it was safe due to hosting tourist attractions like <a href="https://www.manilazoo.ph/">Manila Zoo</a>, the Baywalk promenade, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. But it’s also home to a nightlife area brimming with street crime.</p> <p><strong>Tondo</strong> – Tourists are unlikely to visit Tondo deliberately. But they could accidentally wander into this dangerous slum, because it borders the touristy Chinatown area. Tondo residents suffer from inadequate housing, health, education and employment services. As a result, crime flourishes.</p> <h2>How dangerous are Boracay and Palawan?</h2> <p>Tourists adore <a href="https://www.tourismphilippines.com.au/where/boracay">Boracay</a> and <a href="https://www.tourismphilippines.com.au/where/palawan">Palawan</a>, tropical beach getaways blessed by sublime coastal scenery. Here’s safety issues to consider at these two beautiful destinations.</p> <p><strong>Water sports scams</strong><strong> – </strong>Many tourists to Boracay and Palawan do watersport activities like jet skiing. Unfortunately, it’s easy for them to be scammed. Most commonly, when they rent a jetski, they don’t notice it’s covered by subtle pieces of tape, which hide pre-existing damage. Once you return the jet ski, the scamming vendor will surreptitiously remove the tape, claim you caused that damage, and give you an enormous bill for repairs. Stay safe by only renting a jetski via a reputable hotel.</p> <p><strong>Speed boat danger</strong> – Speed boat tours of neighouring islands and beaches are popular with tourists to Boracay and Palawan. Unfortunately, they have poor safety standards. Often they speed, ignore severe weather warnings, and don’t have sufficient life jackets on board. If you want to visit another island, it’s best to book this activity with a reputable hotel.</p> <p><strong>Scams in the Philippines</strong></p> <p>Unfortunately, poverty is so widespread in the Philippines that some desperate people resort to scamming tourists to survive. Here’s three of the most common scams and how to avoid them.</p> <p><strong>Money changing scam</strong><strong> - </strong>My late father, a veteran traveller, fell prey to this common scam in Manila. Money changers advertise an extremely attractive exchange rate to lure tourists. The vendor takes your foreign currency, counts it on a benchtop, and then shows you the correct amount of Philippines Pesos. As they give you the Pesos, they use sleight of hand to drop some of these notes under the benchtop. The solution: Always change money inside banks.</p> <p><strong>Manila horse-drawn carriage scam</strong><strong> – </strong>Horse-drawn carriage rides are offered at several of Manila’s most popular tourist areas. Unfortunately, some of these operators rip off foreigners. When tourists ask for a ride, the driver will tell them to get in, then avoid discussing the price. At journey’s end, they’ll quote an exorbitant figure and, if you object, will raise their voice and gesticulate to intimidate and embarrass you. To be safe, confirm the price first or avoid the carriages altogether, as the horses may not be treated kindly.</p> <p><strong>Taxi scams</strong><strong> - </strong>Unfortunately, a minority of Filipino taxi drivers refuse to use their meter and then massively overcharge foreigners. So, before I enter a taxi here, I ask the driver if they’ll use the meter, and then watch them activate it. Typically, the scamming drivers wait around outside the busiest tourist areas. While most of this gun crime occurs in slums, where tourists are unlikely to venture, travellers still need to take precautions to avoid being robbed:</p> <ul> <li>Do not pull out wads of cash in public. Where possible, it is safer to pay for things using your bankcard.</li> <li>Do not wear expensive jewelry, leave it in the lockbox of your hotel room.</li> <li>Try to minimize the amount of time you are holding your expensive phone. Instead, keep it tucked away.</li> </ul> <h2>Travel Insurance in the Philippines</h2> <p>Travel insurance may play an important role when visiting the Philippines, where safety can vary and unexpected situations may arise. Whether you’re exploring busy cities, remote islands, or taking part in water activities, having travel insurance may help protect your wallet against unforeseen events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, delays, or stolen belongings. This is largely due to<span> </span>older infrastructure and drainage systems, which were not designed to handle the same waste volumes or materials common in modern Western plumbing.</p> <p data-start="345" data-end="506">As a result, many toilets in Greece, particularly in older buildings and on some islands, ask visitors to dispose of toilet paper in a bin rather than flushing it.</p> <p data-start="508" data-end="913">Greece actually has a long history of early sanitation innovation: the<span> </span>first known flushing toilets date back to the Palace of Knossos on Crete (around 1700 BC). While modern plumbing has of course evolved significantly since then, many parts of the country still rely on<span> </span>legacy or constrained sewage systems, meaning pipes remain narrower and more prone to clogging if non-human waste is flushed.</p> <p data-start="915" data-end="1098" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">In short, while infrastructure varies widely today, the safest general rule for travelers is still to<span> </span>avoid flushing toilet paper unless signage clearly indicates it is permitted.</p> <h2 id="etiquette">What is the toilet etiquette in Greece?</h2> <p>The biggest thing to note is simply this: don’t flush toilet paper down the loo.</p> <p>What happens if you do flush toilet paper? Due to the narrow pipes, you may end up with a clogged or overflowing toilet – unpleasant and embarrassing, to say the least.</p> <p>You will find there are bins to the side of the toilet where you can dispose of your tissue instead. The bins tend to have lids and foot pedals and are emptied at least once daily, so it’s not as gruesome as it sounds. You will find there are signs in toilets everywhere to remind you of this, from hotel rooms to cafes and tourist hotspots.</p> <h2 id="greece">Are toilets the same everywhere in Greece?</h2> <p>More modern hotels, airports and shopping developments in Greece have improved designs and sewage networks and might offer toilets with better flushing facilities, but obviously, it depends on where you go.</p> <p>Greek blogger Vanessa Fou has traveled widely around her country and shares tips and advice for visitors on her website <span><a href="https://realgreekexperiences.com/">realgreekexperiences.com.</a></span> She says toilets vary depending on the region and type of establishment you are visiting.</p> <p>“Upmarket hotels, restaurants and airports will typically have clean and well-maintained toilets. The toilets in some local tavernas, coffee shops, bus stations and even ancient sites might not be as well-maintained,” she says. “It's always advisable to carry tissue with you, as sometimes toilet paper may have run out.”</p> <p>It’s also a good tip to wrap your used toilet tissue with a few sheets of clean paper, to make just the clean paper waste visible which will be a bit less icky for you and everyone else who has to use or empty the bin.</p> <p>But don’t freak out about the whole situation, it really isn’t as bad as it sounds.</p> <h2 id="squat">How common are squat toilets in Greece?</h2> <p>These are another thing to keep in mind. They're not very common, but something you might encounter in remote areas. Greece’s squat toilets are exactly as you imagine: a toilet without a toilet seat and bowl, and two panels to place your feet on either side of the hole.</p> <p>Fou says you might find them at places such as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed <a href="https://visitmeteora.travel/meteora-monasteries/">Meteora Monasteries </a>– built in the 14th century and which teeter dramatically on the tops of cliffs and rock formations, so it’s entirely forgivable that the site’s toilets might not be the most modern.</p> <p>If you do come across squat toilets, Fou’s advice for women is that the lower you squat, the better. It goes without saying that the area may not be as clean as you like and you should take extra care when wearing sandals or flip-flops.</p> <h2 id="tap">Can I drink the tap water in Greece?</h2> <p>In general, Fou says hygiene standards can vary across popular tourist destinations.<span>“</span>You can safely drink tap water in many areas of Greece,” she says.</p> <p>“This includes the big cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki, most of the mainland and certain islands. On smaller islands, such as Santorini, tap water is not always drinkable, so you <a href="/travel-safety/worldwide/bottled-vs-filtered-water">should drink bottled water</a>.</p> <p>“It's always best to ask the locals at each place you visit if it's safe to drink tap water.”</p> <p><em>Planning a trip to Greece? A little bottle of hand sanitizer is also a useful and easy item to carry around.</p> <p>When eating out, be careful with food that may have been washed, like salads and fruits, when you’re not certain about water safety. The US State Department has issued a <a href="https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/mexico.html">travel advisory of Level 2: Use increased caution</a> for Mexico, the same level as Spain and Sweden. However, some areas are best avoided due to the risk of kidnapping and drug cartel violence.</p> <h3>Cartel violence in Mexico</h3> <p><a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/north-america/mexico/the-truth-behind-drug-violence">Drug cartels and organized crime</a> are an unfortunate reality in Mexico, particularly in certain states and border areas.</p> <p>In late February 2026, cartel violence in Mexico made international headlines when Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, known as El Mencho, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/22/world/americas/jalisco-new-generation-cartel-leader-killed.html">was killed in the state of Jalisco</a>. In retaliation, cartel members set fire to vehicles and businesses and created roadblocks in at least 13 states. Tourists in some regions, including the popular seaside resort town of Puerto Vallarta, were told to shelter in place, and numerous airlines cancelled flights.</p> <p>The chaos has since died down. Former drug war correspondent <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/about/contributors/joseph-furey">Joe Furey</a> told World Nomads, “I doubt there's much more danger of cartel retaliation. What we saw was proof of loyalty, nothing more – necessary bluster.”</p> <p>“Cartels are, at root, financial organizations,” he pointed out. “Their money is not confined to drugs, extortion, and other overtly illegal rackets. It’s also washed and reinvested through legitimate businesses and professional laundering networks.”</p> <p>In that way, the World Cup is an economic opportunity for cartels. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, author of a new book on Mexican cartels, says she thinks the cartels <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7067411/2026/02/24/mexico-cartel-violence-fifa-world-cup-playoffs/">are likely to keep a low profile</a> during the event, so as not to drive away tourists.</p> <h3>Tourist zones</h3> <p>Most of the cartel-related violence is related to turf wars between rival gangs, and typically happens away from tourist areas, as local authorities go to great lengths to keep those areas safe. Though there have been isolated cases where tourists were caught in the crossfire, sticking to resort areas and tourist zones is still one of the best ways to stay out of trouble.</p> <h3>Government travel advisories</h3> <p>Due in part to cartel violence, the US State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel travel advisory for the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. While none of the FIFA World Cup venues are in these states, Guadalajara’s World Cup venue is in Jalisco, which is currently at a Level 3: Reconsider Travel level.</p> <h2 id="health">Health care access for visitors to Mexico</h2> <p>Mexico has both public and private health care systems, but the public system is generally intended for residents enrolled in national programs. If you’re visiting Mexico and need medical care, you’ll usually be treated at a private clinic or hospital and may be expected to pay for services upfront. But is Mexico safe for soccer fans?</p> <p>Following the cartel violence, FIFA representatives <a href="https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/mexico-fifa-review-world-cup-security/3857111/">met with Mexican authorities</a> to discuss security at the World Cup and review the intelligence, prevention, and operational protocols that were planned.</p> <p>On March 6, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/3/6/mexicos-sheinbaum-pledges-robust-world-cup-security-in-visit-to-jalisco">announced plans</a> to deploy as many as 100,000 security personnel in host cities and tourist areas during the tournament – 20,000 military personnel, 55,000 police officers, and members of private security companies.</p> <p>The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/48043487/mexico-violence-happened-fifa-response-means-world-cup">expressed</a> his “complete confidence in Mexico, in its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and in the authorities."</p> <hr /><br /><span class="Icon--lge Icon--circle icon-wn-navigation"></span> <h2 id="mexico-city">Mexico City safety</h2> <p>Mexico’s capital city is a vibrant, sprawling, sophisticated metropolis, offering rich history and modern culture. The city will host five matches at the venerable Estadio Azteca (renamed Estadio de Ciudad de México for the World Cup), including the opening match of the tournament on June 11. In anticipation of huge crowds, Mexico City has a <a href="https://mexicobusiness.news/mobility/news/mexico-fast-tracks-mobility-2026-fifa-world-cup">host of infrastructure and security projects</a> in the works, including:</p> <ul> <li><a href="https://mexicobusiness.news/aerospace/news/aicm-rolls-out-ai-security-ahead-world-cup-2026">Large-scale security improvements</a> at Mexico City International Airport</li> <li>Deployment of counter-drones to protect stadiums and fan zones</li> <li>A new train line connecting Mexico City with Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía (around 30 miles away)</li> <li>Complete renovation of Metro Line 1</li> <li>Renovated tourist routes and new streetlights in the city center</li> <li>Creation of 208 mi (334km) of “safe paths” featuring LED lighting, video surveillance cameras, and emergency buttons that connect pedestrians with authorities</li> <li>17 additional trains on the light rail route leading to the stadium</li> </ul> <p>The stadium is also being <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/heres-what-estadio-azteca-will-look-like-for-the-2026-world-cup/">completely renovated</a> and brought up to <a href="https://inside.fifa.com/innovation/stadium-guidelines/general-process-guidelines/operations/safety-and-security-operations">FIFA security and safety standards</a>. Updates include:</p> <ul> <li>100 new security cameras</li> <li>Improved elevators, circulation routes, and accessibility</li> <li>Updated entrances, stairs, and corridors to improve traffic flow and eliminate bottlenecks</li> <li>Redesigned road and pedestrian accesses to the station</li> </ul> <p>Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at the <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/fifa-fan-festival/mexico-city">FIFA Fan Festival</a> in the Zócalo, Mexico City’s massive central square. Crowds of up to 100,000 are expected on days when Mexico’s team is playing.</p> <p>LGBTQ+ fans will find a welcoming, safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub at <a href="https://pridehouseunited2026.com/mexico-city/">Pride House Mexico City 2026</a>. This tournament will be the largest of its kind ever held, and the first to be hosted by three nations: Canada, the US, and Mexico. 42 nations will compete in 104 matches.</p> <p>If you’re planning to attend the World Cup but haven’t experienced major soccer matches before, what can you expect at the tournament? Read on to learn how soccer culture differs between nations, and what it will be like to watch the beautiful game played on such a grand scale.</p> <h2>Differences in soccer culture between nations</h2> <h3>Mexico</h3> <p>Mexican <strong><em>fútbol</em></strong> culture is legendary. Mexico is one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world, right up there with England, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, and soccer is by far the most popular sport. Matches are noisy and boisterous affairs, and fans may end up showered with beer and popcorn.</p> <p>Joe Furey, a former drug war correspondent frequently based in Mexico, told World Nomads, “Compared to the US and Canada, when I’ve watched football in Mexico the atmosphere has been rowdier, more physical, and more continuous – chanting that doesn’t stop, drums, flags, whole sections on their feet. But it's just ritual, not a menace. And the Mexican authorities know how to police it, at least in built-up areas with larger stadiums.”</p> <p>Mexican soccer games are also family-friendly, with multiple generations in attendance – more so than Argentina or Brazil.</p> <h3>United States</h3> <p>Though many people in the US grow up playing soccer, and community soccer leagues can be seen on fields across the country, professional soccer has been relatively slow to catch on. Each team’s set of fans will bring their own personality and traditions to the matches – for example, host cities are preparing for <a href="https://www.keranews.org/news/2025-12-17/from-a-10-000-dutch-fan-march-to-securing-a-legacy-arlington-world-cup-planning-enters-final-stage">some 10,000 members of the Orange Army</a> (fans of the Dutch team) to flood the streets as they march en masse towards the stadium.</p> <p>All stadiums have seating sections for supporters – the national teams often set aside tickets for supporter groups such as the Voyageurs. These events, put on by the host cities, are typically free and open to the public. On the other hand, host cities Kansas City, MO and Philadelphia, PA were ranked #45 and #46 out of 50.</p> <p>It should also be noted that crime varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. Often, the most dangerous areas are places most tourists will never go.</p> <h3>The threat of gun violence</h3> <p>Gun laws in the US are less strict than in countries such as the UK or Australia, but regulations <a href="https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/">vary by state</a>. The US has a <a href="https://www.healthdata.org/news-events/insights-blog/acting-data/gun-violence-united-states-outlier">significantly higher rate of gun deaths</a> than most developed nations, but while mass shootings often make international headlines, these incidents make up only 1% of gun violence.</p> <p>All World Cup stadium venues will have a fenced, outer perimeter with metal detectors and security screenings at the entry points. Weapons of any kind <a href="https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/">are prohibited</a> within the perimeter, and there is a clear-bag policy for guests. Fan Festivals are expected to follow these same protocols.</p> <h3>Reliability of emergency services</h3> <p>The quality of emergency health services in the US is good, but <a href="https://www.ems1.com/public-health/study-ranks-best-and-worst-states-for-providing-urgent-medical-care">can vary from state to state</a>. Wait times in emergency rooms can be long, and the cost of care is high.</p> <h3>Visa issues</h3> <p>New regulations and executive orders from the Trump Administration have complicated matters for many international visitors.</p> <p>Residents of the 42 <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program">Visa Waiver</a> countries can apply for a visa online using the <a href="https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/">Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)</a>. But host cities may still need to scramble to get all their security measures and staff in place.</p> <h3>ICE at the World Cup</h3> <p>According to acting director Todd Lyons, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will form a “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7038337/2026/02/11/world-cup-usa-ice-security/">key part of the overall security apparatus</a> for the World Cup.” ICE officials have said their role at major events is intelligence coordination rather than immigration enforcement. However, at the time of writing, the Trump Administration had not ruled out conducting ICE raids at World Cup matches.</p> <p>On March 18, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7130431/2026/03/19/world-cup-2026-ice-bills-congress/">members of Congress introduced bills</a> to prevent immigration enforcement within a mile of World Cup stadiums or Fan Festivals or on public transit during the tournaments, but passage of these bills is uncertain. Fans are encouraged to use other transportation methods.</p> <h4>Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Toronto</h4> <ul> <li>Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at Toronto’s <a href="https://torontofwc26.ca/FIFAFanFestival">Fan Festival</a>, being held at the Bentway, a new public space under the Gardiner Expressway.</li> <li><a href="https://www.pridehousetoronto.com/">Pride House Toronto 2026</a> offers a safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub for LGBTQI+ communities.</li> </ul> <hr /><br /><span class="Icon--lge Icon--circle icon-wn-navigation"></span> <h3>Vancouver, British Columbia</h3> <p>Flanked by snow-capped mountains and the Pacific Ocean, <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/canada/vancouver">Vancouver</a> is a scenic and cosmopolitan city with a walkable downtown.</p> <p>Tragic events are not unheard of here – the city made news in April 2024, when <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vehicle-hits-crowd-filipino-festival-lapu-lapu-day-block-party-1.7519778">an SUV drove through a crowd</a> at a Lapu Lapu Day festival, killing 11 people. But Vancouver also has wide experience with hosting major sporting events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and nine matches during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.</p> <p>Security operations and infrastructure upgrades for the 2026 tournament include:</p> <ul> <li>200 temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras in areas associated with the tournament (required under Vancouver’s contract with FIFA)</li> <li>Major transit increases along <a href="https://www.translink.ca/news/2026/march/translink%20unveils%20game%20plan%20for%20fifa%20world%20cup%202026%20vancouver">Metro Vancouver’s TransLink network</a>, such as: <ul> <li>Extra bus service to routes serving the FIFA Fan Festival at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE)</li> <li>A dedicated shuttle between the PNE and main SkyTrain lines</li> <li>More frequent and extended service on the SkyTrain before and after matches</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <p>According to <a href="https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/mayor-sim-statement-on-jurisdiction-and-security-for-the-fifa-world-cup-2026.pdf">Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim</a>, security planning for the tournament will be led by the Vancouver Police Department in partnership with other Canadian law enforcement agencies. In February 2026, in response to concerns, he stated that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would not be involved in security operations.</p> <h4>BC Place</h4> <p>Vancouver will host seven FIFA World Cup matches at <a href="https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/articles/vancouver-host-seven-matches-canada-stadium-bc-place">BC Place Vancouver</a>, its iconic downtown stadium. BC Place is conveniently located a short walk from the SkyTrain. Though the stadium was upgraded for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, additional improvements are in the works for the 2026 tournament, including redesigned entrances, more elevators, and gender-neutral washrooms.</p> <p>As part of their host city agreement with FIFA, the city will create <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/how-vancouver-is-preparing-to-host-7-fifa-world-cup-games-9.7008748">a controlled area</a> of about 1.25mi (2km) around the stadium. Extra precautions will be taken in the zone to ensure public safety.</p> <h4>Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Vancouver</h4> <ul> <li>Vancouver’s <a href="https://www.vancouverfwc26.ca/fifa-fan-festival">Fan Festival</a> will be held at Hastings Park within the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) grounds.</li> <li><a href="https://pridehouseunited2026.com/vancouver/">Pride House Vancouver 2026</a> will offer game screenings, cultural events, and more.</li> </ul> <h2 id="public-transit">Public transit safety during major events</h2> <p><br /> Both Canadian host cities have extensive and reliable public transit. When I visited Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, my SkyTrain ride featured a jovial crowd of Canadians singing <em>O Canada</em>. I felt very safe, but it’s important not to let your guard down.</p> <p>Toronto and Vancouver police have warned of a rise in pickpocket thefts at <a href="https://toronto.citynews.ca/2025/06/26/toronto-cell-phone-thefts-summer-festivals/">festivals</a>, <a href="https://toronto.citynews.ca/video/2025/12/05/toronto-police-urge-vigilance-as-pickpocketing-rises-during-festive-season/">shopping malls</a>, public transit, and other crowded places.</p> <p>To avoid becoming a victim:</p> <ul> <li>Carry your phone or wallet in an inside pocket or a zipped crossbody bag kept in front of your body – not in a back pocket where it can be easily stolen without you noticing.</li> <li>Stay extra vigilant in crowded places, packed trains, and busy stations or transfer points.</li> <li>Be wary of strangers in your personal space. Thailand, however, has extremely strict laws called <em>lese-majeste</em>, under which people can receive long prison sentences for insulting its monarchy.</p> <p>Like the UK, Japan, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, to name a few, Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. This means it has a Government, but its head of State is a royal figure. In Thailand’s case, that is King Maha Vajiralongkorn.</p> <p><em>Lese-majeste</em> complaints can be filed by anyone, against anyone, and are always investigated by the police.</p> <p>While it is rare for tourists to face <em>lese-majeste</em> charges, it can happen. So do not, in any circumstances, say anything negative about Thailand’s monarchy while you’re in the country. Also, do not write anything derogatory about the Thai Royal family online. It’s better to avoid mentioning them altogether.</p> <p>There will also probably be times during your trip to Thailand that you’ll need to stand to attention as a mark of respect to the nation and, by extension, to its royal family. In urban areas, at 8am and 6pm every day, you’ll hear loudspeakers playing the Thai national anthem. Follow the lead of locals, stop whatever you’re doing, and stand still and silent until the song finishes.</p> <p>Another version of this occurs before movies at Thai cinemas. Just before the film begins a video is shown celebrating the Thai Royal family, during which the audience will stand quietly. Do as they do to avoid causing offense and potentially landing yourself in trouble.</p> <h2 id="illegal-drugs">Avoid illegal drugs in Thailand</h2> <p>It can be a life-altering mistake to ignore Thailand’s stringent drug laws. You could face long imprisonment if found in possession of cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, LSD, opium, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, ketamine or magic mushrooms (among others).</p> <p>And don’t be fooled by worldwide headlines about Thailand legalizing cannabis in early 2022 – smoking marijuana can still land you in a Thai jail. As of 2026, only medical marijuana is legal and you cannot smoke it in public. Many marijuana shops closed down and strict regulations are back in enforcement. <br /><br />If a foreigner gets caught smoking illegal marijuana, deportation or time behind bars is a real possibility.</p> <h2 id="drinking">Thailand's legal drinking age is 20</h2> <p>In Europe, the legal drinking age ranges from as young as 16 up to 18 years old, while in Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada it is 18. In Thailand, you have to be 20 years old to legally buy alcohol. This may surprise some readers, as many teenage tourists drink alcohol while partying in Thailand.</p> <p>No matter what other tourists tell you about the leniency regarding underage tourists and alcohol, Thai law is Thai law. And Thai police have publicly stated they’re cracking down on underage drinking more than ever since the pandemic. If you look young, you may want to carry your ID on you when in bars, just in case.</p> <p><em>Planning a trip to Thailand? Find out <a href="/travel-insurance">how travel insurance can cover</a> lost or stolen baggage, sudden illness, or other travel mishaps.</em></p> <h2 id="visa">Don't overstay your visa in Thailand</h2> <p>Especially for backpackers slowly traveling around Asia, the desire to remain in Thailand for several months can be strong. And the same way you may hear it’s easy to get away with smoking weed, underage drinking, or not carrying any evidence of your passport, fellow travelers may convince you that <a href="/travel-wiser/practical/what-is-a-travel-visa">overstaying your Thai visa</a> isn’t a big deal. “You’ll just get a small fine,” they may say.</p> <p>To an extent, they’re right. If you remain in Thailand beyond the date permitted on your visa <a href="https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/thai-visas-americans/#:~:text=Visa%20Overstays&text=In%20order%20to%20depart%20Thailand,office%2C%20or%20other%20departure%20point.">you’ll be fined 500 baht (USD $15) for each day you have overstayed</a> up to a maximum of 20,000 baht ($600). I have met travelers who preferred to pay that maximum fine rather than face the hassle of renewing their visa.</p> <p>That is a big mistake for two reasons. Firstly, if you are caught by the police while wandering around Thailand overstaying your visa (as opposed to at the airport as you depart), you can potentially face more serious penalties, including a ban from re-entering Thailand for a period of time. Thai police have been known to conduct sweeps of areas where budget travelers stay, looking for offenders, so it's more likely than you might think.</p> <p>Secondly, if you overstay your Thai visa by between 90 days and one year, you face a one-year ban from re-entering Thailand and will find it more difficult to get Thai visas in the future. The penalties also increase for overstays of more than one year.<br /><br /></p> <h2 id="passport">Always carry your passport in Thailand</h2> <p>Thai authorities recommend tourists and foreign ex-pats carry their passports with them at all times while in Thailand. If you are comfortable doing that, then go ahead. Many tourists, however, are justifiably worried that constantly having their single most important document on their person greatly heightens <a href="/travel-insurance/whats-covered/stolen-passports">the risk of it being lost or stolen</a>.</p> <p>I won’t advise against something that is law. Just make sure, at a minimum, you carry a clear, printed photocopy of your passport photo page, your Thai VISA page, and of your Thai entry stamp. Also, keep photos of these pages in your phone. It is very rare for tourists to be asked by Thai police to show their passports. But if this does occur, then at least producing a photocopy and phone photo of your passport will help greatly.<br /><br />Beyond just staying on the right side of the law, there are a number of other things you can do to keep safe in Thailand. The LGBTQ+ travel market generated an estimated <a href="https://www.traveldailymedia.com/lgbtqia-travel-remains-a-growth-sector-in-2025/">US$357 billion in 2025</a>, and with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%, could reach US$640 billion by 2032.</p> <p>But that doesn’t mean those travels are always friendly and inclusive. A <a href="https://news.booking.com/from-planning-to-personas-bookingcom-research-reveals-how-lgbtq-travelers-are-taking-control-of-their-trips">2024 poll by Booking.com</a> found that 59% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travelers have experienced discrimination when traveling.</p> <p>So, what can LGBTQ+ travelers do to help ensure a safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free trip? <br /> <br /> Our most important pieces of advice are to:</p> <ul> <li>Know and abide by the local laws regarding homosexuality</li> <li>Be mindful of local customs and social norms</li> <li>Use discretion in destinations that are less tolerant of LGBTQ+ people</li> </ul> <p>Read on for our complete list of tips and resources for navigating challenging situations and traveling with confidence.</p> <h2>What are the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers?</h2> <p>According to the <a href="https://spartacus.gayguide.travel/gaytravelindex.pdf">Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026</a>, the top 10 most tolerant and welcoming countries are Iceland, Malta, Spain, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Portugal, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland.</p> <p>The least tolerant countries are Afghanistan, Chechnya, <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/middle-east/saudi-arabia/a-guide-to-saudi-law-and-customs">Saudi Arabia</a>, Iran, and Yemen.</p> <h2>Is it safe to travel to places where being LGBTQ+ is a crime?</h2> <p>There is no single, or simple, answer to this question. According to the <a href="https://www.humandignitytrust.org/">Human Dignity Trust</a>, 65 countries currently have laws prohibiting homosexuality. But how strictly these laws are enforced and how serious the penalties are can vary from country to country. </p> <p>And even within a country that criminalizes or discriminates against homosexuality, attitudes and enforcement can vary. Large, cosmopolitan cities are often more tolerant and may have their own active LGBTQ+ communities. Tourist destinations may also be more accepting.</p> <p>But wherever you go, it’s important to research the laws and social customs ahead of time.</p> <p><a href="https://www.geoex.com/meet-the-team">Jesse Knight</a>, a Trip Designer with <a href="https://www.geoex.com/">Geographic Expeditions</a>, says that before choosing a destination, he reviews government regulations and gathers anecdotal insight about the local climate. “I don’t specifically seek out or avoid destinations based on their attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people, though I may hesitate to visit countries actively passing anti-gay legislation,” he told us. “If choosing between countries with similar experiences, I prefer to support destinations that align with my values.</p> <p>“That said, as a world traveler, you’ll inevitably visit places where political values differ from your own. In those cases, supporting gay-friendly businesses is one way to use your economic influence intentionally.</p> <p>“I also believe in looking for the good in people. Being a thoughtful ambassador – whether as an American, LGBTQ+ traveler, or however you identify – can help broaden perspectives. Tourism creates exposure, and exposure often fosters understanding.”</p> <h2>How can you protect yourself when traveling in a country that isn’t friendly to LGBTQ+ visitors?</h2> <p>Some travelers prefer to visit LGBTQ+-friendly countries where they can relax and be fully themselves. But that can mean missing out on iconic and beautiful places in less-tolerant countries. If you do choose to visit a less-friendly destination:</p> <ul> <li>Understand the local laws. Research your destination to find out if homosexuality is illegal, what is considered a crime, and how strict the penalties are. Human Dignity Trust offers a <a href="https://www.humandignitytrust.org/lgbt-the-law/map-of-criminalisation/">detailed map of countries that criminalize LGBTQ+ people</a>.</li> <li>Use discretion. In more conservative countries, the LGBTQ+ community may choose to keep a low profile, even if homosexuality is legal. Be mindful of the local culture and dress codes and avoid drawing too much attention or openly discussing your orientation.</li> <li>Avoid public displays of affection. In countries where homosexuality is criminalized, hugging, kissing, or holding hands with someone of the same sex may be illegal and put you at risk of fines or imprisonment. Says Knight, “I avoid PDA even in private transfers or on trains. This is partly out of respect for local culture and partly out of an abundance of caution. I may also request two queen beds to make it less obvious that I’m traveling with a partner.”</li> <li>Read the room. As <em>Women’s Media Center</em> columnist <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/about/contributors/marcie-bianco">Marcie Bianco</a> told us, even in places where homosexuality is legal but less tolerated, it might be smarter to leave people guessing about your relationship. Follow cultural cues – are people staring or glaring? Is there a sense of negative energy in the room? If so, this may not be the time for canoodling.</li> <li>Make a plan. Says Bianco, “Following cultural cues demands that you and your partner be on the same page. This means understanding your plan for responding to any unforeseen negative circumstances. For example, if someone accosts or verbally abuses you, it’s often safer to disengage.”</li> <li>Be wary of using dating apps. Authorities in countries with anti-LGBTQ+ laws have used apps such as Grindr and other digital platforms to entrap and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Criminals may extort LGBTQ+ app users by threatening to “out” them or report them to police. And hate groups may use apps or social media to lure users to unsafe locations.</li> </ul> <h2>What are some planning resources for LGBTQ+ travelers?</h2> <p>Destinations that tout their LGBTQ+-friendliness might still present uncomfortable moments for LGBTQ+ couples. Bianco highly recommends seeking out accommodations, nightlife, and activities that cater to LGBTQ+ travelers – these can help you feel safer and make your adventures more inclusive and enjoyable.</p> <ul> <li>Search out websites or articles by LGBTQ+ travel bloggers and journalists that share places to go and LGBTQ+-specific annual events and activities.</li> <li>Use platforms such as <a href="https://www.misterbandb.com/">misterb&b</a> to find LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, or use the <a href="https://www.everywhereisqueer.com/">Everywhere is Queer</a> app to find queer-owned businesses and safe spaces.</li> <li>Discover LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, tour operators, travel agents, and events through the <a href="https://www.iglta.org/">International LGBTQ+ Travel Association</a> (IGLTA).</li> </ul> <h2>How will new passport requirements affect LGBTQ travelers?</h2> <p>When traveling, it’s important that your passport and ID (driver’s license, etc.) match your current name and gender identity and have an accurate gender marker. This will smooth your way through immigration and airport security and help streamline the visa process if you need one.</p> <p>Some things to keep in mind:</p> <ul> <li>Some countries only recognize Male and Female gender markers on official documents. These countries may treat “X” (non-binary/unspecified) passports as invalid and/or deny entry. Visa applications or travel permits may also be denied.</li> </ul> <p><a href="https://www.safetravel.govt.nz/before-you-go/who-is-travelling/lgbtqia-travellers">Safetravel</a> recommends that travelers contact the embassy or consulate of their intended destination to confirm if passports with “X” gender identifiers will be accepted.</p> <ul> <li>If your current gender presentation doesn’t match your passport or ID, consider <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-wiser/practical/how-to-renew-your-passport">updating your documents</a>. If that’s not possible, carrying a copy of your official gender marker change order may be helpful if you’re questioned.</li> <li>As of early 2025, the US Department of State <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/sex-marker.html">no longer issues US passports with an “X” marker</a>. Applicants must now select either Male (“M”) or Female (“F”) corresponding to their biological sex at birth.</li> <li>Existing passports using the “X” marker will still be valid for travel until they expire. Try not to panic and this info, provided by the American Civil Liberties Union, will get you through it … although we can’t promise you won’t get that speeding ticket.</p> <ul> <li>Turn off the engine.</li> <li>Keep your hands visible – don’t reach into the glove box or under the seat.</li> <li>Stay calm and be polite.</li> <li>You have the right to remain silent. You DO need to give your name (and some states require more info, such as your address), as well as provide your license, registration and proof of insurance, but beyond that you DON’T have to say anything. “Sorry, officer, I’d prefer not to answer that question.” Really, you can say that.</li> <li>You DON’T have to allow a search of your car or yourself. If there’s probable cause or you’re under arrest, the cops won’t need consent to search you (and sometimes your car).</li> <li>If you are arrested, ask for a lawyer immediately.</li> <li>If you are stopped but not arrested, ask if you are free to go. Combine that with a Harvard School of Public Health study that found motorists with guns are more likely to act aggressively, and you have a potentially lethal combination. The AAA studied 10,000 road rage cases over a seven-year period, tallying more than 200 murders and 12,000 injuries.</p> <p>So how can you avoid a road rage incident? Here’s what the AAA recommends.</p> <h3>Don’t offend anyone</h3> <p>Seems pretty basic, but just don’t cut anyone off (check your blind spot before changing lanes); don’t drive slowly in the left lane (that lane is for passing or faster traffic); don’t tailgate (you’ll be at fault for any accident); don’t make rude gestures (no matter how well deserved).</p> <h3>Don’t engage</h3> <p>Give angry drivers plenty of space and avoid eye contact. If you need help, call the police or drive to a populated location like a shopping center or hospital. If caught with one, there are big fines and potentially jail time involved.</p> <p>Patrons who are too drunk can be kicked out or turned away from bars.</p> <p>If pulled over for drinking and driving, police may administer a breathalyzer to test Blood Alcohol Count (BAC). Drink responsibly and call a cab to get back to your hotel or hostel.</p> <h2>What's the drink/driving limit in the USA?</h2> <p>In terms of tolerance, the U.S. has one of the highest compared to other countries. <a href="https://highwaysafety.utah.gov/05-bac-law/">Utah's BAC limit for driving is only .05</a>, but the limit for non-commercial drivers over 21 is .08 within the rest of the United States.</p> <p>An average-sized man can guzzle about four 12-ounce beers over the course of a couple of hours before hitting this limit. By contrast, most European countries set a more restrictive .05 or lower. Some countries have zero tolerance in addition to stiffer fines if caught drinking and driving.</p> <p>The higher legal limit in the States very often means the difference between life and death, someone dies in a drunk driving death every 45 minutes there.</p> <p>Police will set up DUI road blocks to stop and breathalyze drivers, whether you have consumed alcohol or not. If given reason, police will stop any vehicle with due cause which passes through the DUI road block.</p> <p>While many of the statistics relate to American residents, when considering the amount of tourists who come from countries where the legal BAC limit is far lower, it's not a far stretch to guess that some grossly underestimate their level of inebriation before getting behind the wheel while on a vacation here.</p> <p>And with the introduction of services such as Uber and Lyft, thankfully less people are drinking and driving, as taxi rides home are cheap.</p> <h2>Drunken crime spree in the US</h2> <p>The issue with alcohol is also that it can increase the likelihood of other crimes such as robbery, rape, assault plus accidents like drowning and petty crime like public urination.</p> <p>On the first front, four in 10 criminals in the U.S. say booze played a role in a violent offense.</p> <p>Bar room altercations are not uncommon. During my ten years living in Thailand, I learned that tourists who are careful and respectful of local people and laws will find it a peaceful nation.</p> <p>In contrast, trouble will find those who treat Thailand like a lawless fantasyland. Such behaviour upsets the locals, and leaves tourists open to being scammed, robbed, arrested, or injured by an assault or road accident.</p> <h2>Why Thailand is considered a safe destination</h2> <p>Thailand’s rule of law is not strong. However, it relies so heavily on tourism that it has a giant <a href="http://www.touristpolice.go.th">Tourist Police Bureau</a> (about 1,700 English-speaking staff) whose job it is to provide foreigners with protection and justice.</p> <p>This is a key reason that Thailand safety for tourists is robust, and it has a low rate of street crime against tourists: criminals know that targeting foreigners will be treated more seriously. This bureau is part of Thailand’s strong tourism infrastructure, which includes:</p> <ul> <li>Well-connected international airports.</li> <li>A massive range of accommodation.</li> <li>Huge variety of restaurants and bars.</li> <li>Cheap taxis, trains and buses.</li> <li>English language signage and English speaking staff in abundance.</li> </ul> <h2>Common Safety Concerns in Thailand</h2> <p>Theft, scams, traffic accidents, and sickness are the four main concerns regarding Thailand crime and safety.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Petty theft</strong> – Your phone, camera or bag may disappear if you leave it unattended in a public space. Lastly, don’t hire a motorbike, even if you’re a veteran rider.</li> <li><strong>Heat and dehydration</strong> – Thailand’s combination of high heat (frequently 90F or higher) and extreme humidity (frequently 75% or higher) can quickly cause dehydration or heat exhaustion, <a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/thailand">especially for tourists</a> from cold climates. The most recent was in 2014, which I witnessed while living in Bangkok, where many protestors were killed or injured.</li> <li><strong>Protests and what to know</strong> - According to <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Thailand.html">official government travel advisories</a>, Thailand is generally safe for visitors, though travelers should stay aware of occasional political tensions and demonstrations, which can arise quickly but rarely affect tourists who avoid protest areas.</li> <li><strong>Seasonal considerations</strong> – Avoid Thailand from March to May, when it’s at its hottest, and during the June to September monsoon season. Come instead during winter in December or January, when heat and humidity are much lower.</li> </ul> <h2>City and Region Safety Breakdown</h2> <h3>Is Bangkok Safe for Tourists?</h3> <p>In 10 years living in Bangkok on-off I never experienced an assault, theft or robbery. The foreigners I knew who did were either flouting local laws, or made themselves easy targets by getting drunk in public. Here’s three safety safety issues to consider:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Public transport</strong> – Motorcycle taxis will save you time, by weaving through Bangkok’s traffic, but they’re extremely dangerous. Otherwise, Bangkok’s skytrain and underground are very safe.</li> <li><strong>Pickpocketing</strong> – Pickpocketing is fairly rare in Bangkok. High risk locations are on public transport and nightlife areas.</li> <li><strong>Nightlife areas</strong> – Bangkok’s thieves and scammers target intoxicated foreigners in nightlife areas. So stay in groups, mind your valuables, and don’t get wasted.</li> </ul> <h3>Is Phuket Safe?</h3> <p>As opposed to Bangkok, Phuket has wider issues with safety during the day, due to a higher concentration of scammers and thieves. Here’s three safety issues to consider:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Beach safety</strong><strong> - </strong>Phuket has dozens of ocean drownings each year. Travelers must be wary of undertows, which can pull them out into deep water, and also of jetskis and speed boats, which roar through swimming areas.</li> <li><strong>Jet skis & water activities</strong><strong> - </strong>Renting a jet ski in Phuket is risky. Because it commonly involves a scam, where tourists are intimidated into paying huge sums for supposed damage to the jetski.</li> <li><strong>Scooter accidents –</strong> Tourists with no, or minimal scooter experience are crazy to learn this skill while navigating Thailand’s deadly roads. Yet many still try.</li> </ul> <h3>Safety in Chiang Mai & Northern Thailand</h3> <p>Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand are not just quieter than Phuket and Bangkok, but also slightly safer. Whether you’re looking to head into wine valleys of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, journey along the winding coastline of the Garden Route, or explore the vast Kalahari Desert, a <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-insurance/activities/road-trip">road trip</a> is a fantastic way to explore South Africa.</p> <p>I’ve rented a car each of my visits to South Africa. Roads vary in quality from new thoroughfare to potholed roads and dirt paths through nature reserves. Keep a few things to keep in mind to stay safe while on the road:</p> <ul> <li>Drive on the left.</li> <li>Learn the rules of the road, including hovering on the shoulder to allow faster cars to pass.</li> <li>Keep valuables with you and out of sight, even when driving.</li> <li>Navigate narrow, winding roads carefully.</li> <li>Take extra precautions if driving at night (or avoid altogether), including not stopping in rural areas after dark. It’s a fantastic country for safaris, where you can spot lions, elephants, zebra, giraffe, and much more in places like Kruger and Hluhluwe–iMfolozi National Parks. There’s the option to hire a guide and driver or self-drive. Many safari camps include guided game drives with experienced guides who can help you navigate the reserve, cue you in on wildlife safety, and help you spot for your favorite animals.</p> <p>If you self-drive, a 4x4 vehicle is important to navigate the bumpy terrain. It’s best to have some basic knowledge around wildlife safety, as well. It may be tempting to drive the vehicle as close as possible to capture the best photos but remember that you’re a visitor in the home of wild animals. Some animals, including elephants, are territorial, and can charge a car if it thinks the car is in its territory.</p> <h2>Outdoor adventure safety</h2> <p>South Africa is a dream destination for nature lovers. As you would anywhere, come prepared with plenty of water and sun protection for hikes. UV rays are strong due to a thin ozone layer. Poisonous snakes do exist, so stay cautious while you’re on the trails. If you’re heading into the water, know that in certain areas, currents can be strong. Be careful where you go swimming, and if you’re a new surfer, only surf beginner-friendly waters. Don’t be afraid to take a lesson either. But, during my 35 years of regularly visiting <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Indonesia.html">Indonesia</a>, I’ve found the greater concerns are road safety, theft, scams, and illness.</p> <h2>Why Indonesia is considered a safe destination</h2> <p>Foreign tourism in Indonesia is heavily concentrated in capital Jakarta, and dreamy islands Bali and Lombok. While Jakarta’s very crowded and polluted, it has low rates of crime against tourists. The same is true for Bali and Lombok, where tourism revenue is so crucial that local police prioritise solving crimes against foreigners.</p> <p>In Bali and Jakarta, particularly, tourism infrastructure is quite reasonable, and includes:</p> <ul> <li>Modern international airports with connections to many countries.</li> <li>An incredible number and variety of cafes, bars and restaurants</li> <li>Greatly varied accommodation, from cheap hostels up to ultra-luxe resorts.</li> <li>Bargain public transport via taxis, buses and trains.</li> <li>English signage and English speaking staff are common in the main tourist areas.</li> </ul> <h2>Common Safety Concerns in Indonesia</h2> <p>Natural disasters, terrorism, theft, scams, sickness, and traffic accidents are five common tourist concerns about travelling in Indonesia.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Natural disasters</strong> – Indonesia has repeatedly been affected by <a href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/">earthquakes</a>, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and flooding and landslides due to typhoons. These catastrophes cannot be easily predicted; however, you can avoid monsoon season (November to April).</li> <li><strong>Terrorism </strong>– Indonesia has suffered many major terrorist attacks in the past 25 years, including deadly bombings in tourist hubs Jakarta and Bali where dozens of tourists and locals were killed in 2002 and 2005. Since then, security has gotten much tighter in tourism centers.</li> <li><strong>Theft</strong> – Pickpockets target foreigners, especially drunk ones, in busy tourist areas like Bali’s Kuta and Seminyak. Otherwise, theft against tourists is rare.</li> <li><strong>Scams</strong> – Indonesia has myriad <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/worldwide/common-travel-scams">scams targeting tourists</a>. But the most common ones are taxis refusing to use a meter and then greatly overcharging, and money changers using sleight of hand to steal your cash.</li> <li><strong>Traffic accidents</strong> – Up to 30,000 deaths a year occur on <a href="https://www.who.int/teams/social-determinants-of-health/safety-and-mobility/road-safety">Indonesia’s wild roads</a>. Jakarta is safer, because its traffic is so dense it’s hard for cars to build up speed. But Bali is very dangerous, due to its narrow, winding roads.</li> <li><strong>Sickness</strong> – Many tourists get food poisoning in Indonesia. Heard of <a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/indonesia">Bali Belly</a>? It’s a real thing. Violent protests and rare, and not a major concern for tourists.</li> <li><strong>Terrorism</strong> – After a wave of terrorist attacks in the 2000s and 2010s, Indonesian police have cracked down on extremist groups, significantly weakening their networks and <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2025/11/does-jakarta-school-bombing-herald-a-new-wave-of-terror-in-indonesia">reducing the overall threat level</a>, according to the U.S. State Department.</li> <li><strong>Seasonal considerations</strong> – Indonesia is so battered by storms during its monsoon season (November to April) that tourists can easily find themselves stuck in a location due to flooded roads, or airports shut because of volcanic clouds.</li> </ul> <h2>City and Region Safety Breakdown</h2> <h3>Is Jakarta Safe for Tourists?</h3> <p>Across many visits to Jakarta I’ve never felt unsafe, nor have I been a victim of crime. Partly that is due to the fact I’ve behaved with caution and shown respect to local customs. Culturally, Jakarta is vastly different to holiday spots like Bali. Here are three safety issues to consider:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Public transport</strong> – Jakarta is among the world’s worst cities for traffic, with even a 2-mile taxi ride taking up to 60 minutes in peak hours. So book a hotel near a station on its metro system, which opened in 2019, and is very modern, clean and safe.</li> <li><strong>Pickpocketing</strong> – Slick pickpockets are known to operate on Jakarta’s crowded MRT, and in its busiest tourist areas, like the Kota Old Town. But they remain quite rare.</li> <li><strong>Nightlife areas</strong> – Jakarta has subdued nightlife, and attracts very few party-oriented tourists. Those who do go for a drink in entertainment areas like Blok M should avoid heavy intoxication, which is socially unacceptable in this Muslim city.</li> </ul> <h3>Is Bali Safe?</h3> <p>Here are three <a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/southeast-asia/indonesia/how-to-behave-when-visiting-bali">safety issues to consider</a> on Indonesia’s most-visited island:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Volcanic eruptions</strong><strong> - </strong>Bali is famed for its spectacular volcanoes, which have erupted multiple times in the past decade, producing ash clouds that caused many delayed or cancelled flights. But the chance of such an inconvenience affecting you remains low.</li> <li><strong>Beach safety</strong><strong> – </strong>Tourists in Bali commonly risk their lives by ignoring the red flags on beaches, which indicate treacherous conditions. Bali’s oceans can be furious, so follow the guidance of the flags and swim at a beach with lifeguards.</li> <li><strong>Jet skis & water activities</strong><strong> –</strong> Be careful renting a jet ski in Bali, where vendors sometimes cover jetski damage with tape, then later remove it and claim you caused the damage. Only rent a jetski through your hotel.</li> <li><strong>Scooter accidents</strong><strong> –</strong> Bali’s roads are crowded, unpredictable, and often narrow and winding. So unless you’re an experienced rider, stay away from scooters.</li> </ul> <h3>Safety in Lombok, Java and other islands</h3> <p>Beyond Bali and Jakarta, here are two safety issues to consider in the rest of Indonesia:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Respect for religion</strong> – While laidback, Hindu-majority Bali overflows with foreigners in skimpy outfits, dressing that way in other parts of Indonesia may get you arrested, and will certainly offend locals. Indonesia is a Muslim nation, so it expects locals and visitors to dress and behave in a modest fashion.</li> <li><strong>Be wary of boats</strong> – If possible, avoid traveling by ferry or speedboat. But here’s two to be wary of.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Money changer scams</strong> – My wife fell victim to a common tourist scam in Indonesia. A Balinese money changer giving her Indonesian currency counted these notes right in front of her. Then he skilfully slid one-third of them under the counter. So she walked away with just two-thirds of the amount she was due. Avoid this scam by only using money changers inside banks, or major hotels.</li> <li><strong>Taxi scams</strong> – Being overcharged by taxis is particularly common at Bali and Jakarta airports. When tourists leave the arrivals hall they’re often approached by fake taxi drivers, who have rigged meters, or add hefty additional charges at journeys’ end. The solution is simple: Approach the airport information desk and ask which taxi service is reliable.</li> </ul> <h2>Is Indonesia safe for solo travelers and women?</h2> <p>Indonesia’s suitability for female travelers varies depending on the location. Whereas Bali and Lombok are very popular with female tourists, they must be far more cautious traveling in less touristed parts of Indonesia, particularly those with strict Islamic customs, <a href="https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/general-information/practical-information">like Banda Aceh and Sulawesi</a>.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Cultural awareness tips</strong> – Aside from Hindu-majority Bali, the remainder of Indonesia is Muslim. In line with their religious beliefs, Muslim women in Indonesia typically dress in a conservative fashion. Female tourists will be safer if they follow suit, wearing long, loose-fitting pants and tops.</li> <li><strong>Night safety best practices</strong> – Although alcohol is legal in the vast majority of Indonesia, it’s not common for Indonesian women to get drunk in public. So, once again, taking your lead from locals is a good idea. Carry your policy number, medical information and emergency contacts</h3> <p><strong></strong>It's a good idea to carry your policy number, any medical information and emergency contacts with you while on a diving holiday if in the event you are injured or become ill. </p> <h2 id="during-the-scuba-dive-trip">During your scuba diving trip</h2> <h3>9. Never hold your breath – breathe normally</h3> <p>Scuba is a strange and exhilarating experience because you're doing something technically impossible – breathing underwater. It is important to NEVER hold your breath – breathe normally on scuba at all times. Holding your breath can cause an air embolism (where an air bubble enters the bloodstream), which is a serious and potentially fatal injury.</p> <h3>10. Equalize frequently as you descend</h3> <p>Just like on a plane, the change of pressure as you descend to depth while scuba diving means you need to equalize your ears. This needs to be done frequently and before feeling any pain to avoid injury to your inner ear.</p> <h3>11. Stay aware of where your guide and buddy are </h3> <p>Don't be tempted to swim off on your own when you spot something interesting – point it out to your guide and dive buddy and head towards it together. Staying with your buddy and guide is important for safety and also your orientation. If you do lose each other underwater, look around for one minute, and if you still can't see them, slowly ascend to the surface where they should have done the same.</p> <h3>12. Keep an eye on your air gauge</h3> <p>You can only stay down as long as you have air in your tank, and you need to be aware of when your tank is half full and quarter full so you can plan your return to the surface accordingly. Your guide will ask you how much air you have left periodically, but you are ultimately responsible for your own air consumption.</p> <h3>13. Dive within the limits of your dive computer and no deeper than 40m</h3> <p>If you are wearing a dive computer, ensure that you check it frequently to see how much time you have at each depth during your dive. Otherwise, follow your guide and do not descend below their depth. It's important to avoid going below 130ft (40m), which is the generally accepted limit of recreational diving. In addition, be sure not to go below the limit of your<a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/travel-insurance/activities/scuba-diving-travel-insurance"> travel insurance policy</a> which may have a more shallow depth, depending on your country of residence. </p> <h3>14. Don't over-exert yourself </h3> <p>Diving is often called an adrenaline sport, but you should actually be super relaxed when underwater. The is no gain to swimming fast over reefs – the slower you go, the more you'll see. Avoid moving at a pace that makes you out of breath. If you do feel tired, signal your buddy and find a coral-free rock on which you can hang to have a rest.</p> <h3>15. Don't touch anything</h3> <p>You should avoid touching anything (besides the aforementioned rock) as good practice to <a href="/responsible-travel/make-a-difference/participation/help-save-our-planets-coral-reefs">protect the coral reefs</a> – but also to protect yourself. Many corals are sharp, many marine plants are poisonous and many marine creatures will bite if they feel threatened. Keeping your hands to yourself ensures you and they stay safe and unharmed. Always ascend slowly from every dive</h3> <p>As well as not holding your breath, ascending slowly from a dive is the other number one rule of diving. Coming up fast from a dive can cause "the bends" or decompression sickness, as nitrogen is forced into the bloodstream. By coming up slowly from a dive and doing the safety stop, the nitrogen in your body has a chance to dissipate and therefore cause no harm.</p> <h2 id="after-the-scuba-diving-trip">After your scuba diving trip</h2> <h3>17. Stow all your gear away on the boat</h3> <p>Don't leave your scuba gear dumped in a heap on the deck of the boat when you get back from your dive – it's not good for the gear and it's dangerous for you and others who might trip over it. Scuba gear is heavy and potentially dangerous if not handled and stored correctly.</p> <h3>18. Debrief with your guide and buddy</h3> <p>Discuss how the dive went and make notes on what you can improve next time to ensure maximum fun and safety. Keep a note of the weight you used – this can help you on your next dive to help get your weighting correct.</p> <h3>19. If you feel strange, let others know</h3> <p>Don't keep it to yourself if you feel strange after a dive – let others know. Many people feel tired out because they are simply not used to the exertion of physical exercise. If you feel anything else, tell your guide.</p> <h3>20. Don't fly until at least 24 hours after a dive</h3> <p>Due to the excess nitrogen in your system, it's important not to fly until at least 24 hours after your last dive. (Some agencies specify 18 hours, but 24 remains the norm). Although winter months don’t experience extreme cold, many businesses may be closed, travel between islands reduced, and windy conditions may cancel ferries.</p> <p>Shoulder seasons—late spring and early fall—hit the sweet spot. Don’t be afraid to wander outside of these spots.</li> <li>To avoid taxi surcharges in around major tourist sites or from the airport, book with trusted rideshare apps or ask the taxi to use a meter.</li> </ul> <h2>Safety in Athens, Greece</h2> <p>Athens—the capital and largest city of Greece—is the first stop for many visitors. The city is considered safe, including for solo, female, and LGBTQ+ travelers. Violent crime is rare, and petty crime and traffic are the biggest concerns. Take a few precautions to ensure your time in Athens is hassle-free:</p> <ul> <li>Take care of your belongings in crowded areas like Plaka, Monastiraki, and the Acropolis to avoid pick pocketers.</li> <li>Traffic can be chaotic, so be careful when crossing streets. Don’t expect cars and motorcycles to stop at pedestrian crossings.</li> <li>Plaka and Kolonaki are popular for nightlife and are generally safe. Not only do these high temperatures make it challenging to explore, but major attractions may also be closed in extreme heat. My first visit to Greece was in August, and it’s still a lesson I remember—never travel to Greece in the height of summer again. If you have the option, avoid traveling to Greece during July and August.</p> <p>If you are traveling during these months, take a few precautions:</p> <ul> <li>Wear sunscreen and a hat.</li> <li>Adventure during early mornings and evenings.</li> <li>Take rest in shade.</li> <li>Stay hydrated.</li> </ul> <p>Greece is prone to natural disasters, including summer wildfires. Due to its location on the Eurasian and Aegean Sea Plates, small tremors can occur though major earthquakes are rare. In the unlikely event that a larger earthquake shakes up your visit, follow the instructions of your hotel staff. With changing weather patterns, flash floods have also increased in frequency. While difficult to predict, is it important to stay aware that flash foods happen on occasion.</p> <h2>Water and Outdoor Adventure Safety</h2> <p>Greece is known for its picturesque beaches, brilliant blue waters, and rolling mountains. And as with anywhere, take a few precautions along the way.</p> <p>While most beaches are safe, be careful of strong currents especially near beaches with cliffs and on windy day. Steer clear of rocky areas when swimming, so waves don’t crash you against the rocks. Be mindful of currents and rocky areas, whether you’re swimming, kayaking, or paddle boarding. The Amazon’s waters teem with parasites and amoebas that can seriously mess with your delicate Western immune system and lead, at best, to that vexing trilogy of vomit, fever and diarrhea, at worst to dysentery, typhoid and cholera. provoke acute and, at times, fatal diseases like Chagas Disease.</p> <p>The cone-nose (or kissing bug) carries a parasite which transmits the disease. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, skin rash, body aches and more. Chagas Disease is present in 21 Latin American countries and results in about 12,500 deaths a year worldwide.</p> <p>Of these pesky parasites, it’s the dreaded trematodes that strike fear into the hearts of travelers keen to penetrate the jungle. Also known as flukes, and named for their massive suckers, they are generally found in pools and other contaminated waters. Trematodes burrow their way directly into your body, if you choose, for example, to wade through a swamp. Be sure to wear long pants and boots if your journey involves passing through a swamp.</p> <p>They can also pass into your system through consuming contaminated water. Always <a href="/travel-safety/bottled-vs-filtered-water" target="_blank">treat your water</a> before consuming it.</p> <p>Take the customary precautions and make sure your food is fresh and properly washed to reduce your chances of getting sick. Always shake out your boots or shoes before you put them on, in case any creatures have made them home for the night.</p> <h2 id="what-wildlife-will-i-see-in-the-amazon">What Wildlife Will I See in the Amazon?</h2> <p>This is one of the most species-rich places on earth – to give you a sense of the magnitude, the Negro River has more species than all the rivers in Europe combined.</p> <p>With frogs the size of rabbits, 30ft long green anacondas, and the black caiman (the largest alligator in the world), there’s no shortage of superlatives to describe the roughly 16,000 species that populate the Amazon. According to scientists, a new species of animal is discovered in the Amazon rainforest every three days.</p> <p>While, reassuringly, animals will not go out of their way to hunt down humans, the Amazon is full of creatures that will make no bones about attacking you if you display threatening behavior towards them. Aspiring David Attenboroughs should keep their distance.</p> <p>One of the most beautiful and brightly colored creatures you’ll see in the rainforest, the poison dart frog can emit a deadly poison through their skin capable of causing heart failure within minutes. One impressive subspecies, the golden dart poison frog possesses enough poison to kill up to twenty humans. Then there are the aptly named Assassin bugs which inject poisonous saliva into their prey; it literally broils its victim’s organs. The Amazon River harbors electric eels that can generate five times more electricity than the standard wall socket, as well as blood-sucking leeches and vicious mosquitos that can infect you with a medley of fatal ailments.</p> <p>Always listen for clues about what is around you, watch where you step and (in the absence of a machete-wielding tour guide) carry a long stick ahead of you to clear your path and help avoid contact with spider webs. Be cautious when touching or handling plants as many have thorns and can be poisonous. </p> <h2 id="bugs,-sweat-and-tears">Bugs, Sweat and Tears</h2> <p>Persistent, painful and maddening mosquitoes can make your trip into the Brazilian bush memorable for all the wrong reasons.</p> <p>Take plenty of high strength insect repellent; (your average stuff just won't work!) and a mosquito net to sleep under. Repellents with high concentrations of DEET will be sure to keep the mozzies off but also strip through plastic and burn the nostrils. If you're worried about glowing or melting, there are plenty of powerful repellents that don't contain DEET.</p> <p>Higher levels of acidity in the Amazon waters are supposed to mean fewer mosquitoes but don't let your guard down. They're sneaky devils and that's when they're most likely to strike. There may not be as many mozzies buzzing around the river itself but there's no shortage of stagnant pools of rainwater for them to infest.</p> <p>There are plenty of other things that creep, crawl, slither and stalk in the Brazilian rainforest so keep to the tracks and stay alert for fangs.</p> <p>Brazil's heat and humidity will cause you to spend a lot of your time sweating. Ensure you don't become dehydrated and keep up your fluid intake, capirinhas don't count!</p> <p>Although the water in Brazil's cities is quite clean, it's best for tourists to stick to bottled stuff, especially in more remote areas. Coconut water is a tasty alternative, full of calcium and potassium, and a real staple for Brazilians from birth. Seriously, it's prescribed to beef up Brazilian babies. Mineral salts are also good at keeping you hydrated and healthy and they're a great idea when you're hiking in the heat.</p> <p>High humidity means that despite how much you sweat, very little of it evaporates which interrupts your body's cooling mechanisms, making heatstroke a real danger. Don't overexert yourself, try to keep your head covered and again, stay hydrated.</p> <h2 id="cute-thieves">Cute Thieves</h2> <p>The high percentage of tourists at Foz du Iguazu, plus the falls' isolation from the main town mean crime isn't a huge issue, although that's not an indication to let your guard down.</p> <p>The biggest threat you're likely to encounter in the Parque Nacional will be to your lunch. The bands of coati that roam the park's paths will seize upon any sniff of food, their bizarre snouts swiveling this way and that, and will pounce on any opportunity to relieve you of your snacks. They may be cute but unless you want to be overrun by banded bandits, don't feed them. There's a reason for all the signs. They will keep pestering and you'll accustom them to humans, meaning the problem will only get worse for those who visit in the future.</p> <h2 id="weather-in-the-amazon">Weather in the Amazon</h2> <p>The Amazon rainforest is characterized by heavy rain (up to nine feet per year), intense humidity and heat. Weather can produce dangerous conditions, especially during the height of the rainy season from October to May. Torrential rains during March and April washed out roads and water levels rise dramatically in the Amazon River and its network of tributaries. It is not uncommon for flooding and potent river currents to capsize boats. While the rainier season is prime time for wildlife watching, traveling to the Amazon between June and September generally yields more amenable conditions.</p> <h2 id="how-to-stay-safe-in-the-amazon">How to Stay Safe in the Amazon</h2> <p>If you were to ever get lost or separated from your group, there are a few survival essentials that are handy to know. Here are a few basic survival tips: </p> <ul> <li>Don’t freak out. This will waste energy and increase your need for food; move slowly and cautiously</li> <li>Walking downhill in the jungle will lead to water, and, usually, water leads to civilization</li> <li>Break down whatever challenge you are faced with into small, manageable tasks </li> <li>Obtain water. Hoards of insects often imply that there is a water source nearby. Animals will often leave trails that meet near water. If you are really prepared (or paranoid), carry a plastic trowel for digging for water beneath the surface. Ideally, boil any water you find, filter it or add purification tablets to it. </li> <li>Never wear wet socks. Over time, persistent moisture can provoke tissue breakdown which would leave your feet at risk from fungal infections </li> <li>Leave a trail made from torn clothing or any objects you find (the brighter the better)</li> <li>Don’t head in a straight line; weave your way through clearings in the forest  </li> <li>This is a tough one but try to gather materials to build a shelter on high ground (if possible) to protect yourself from inclement weather, voracious insects and venomous spiders and snakes. A fire will frighten away your predators and attract attention from other travelers </li> <li>It’s counter to the plan to accidentally poison yourself; only eat fruits, vegetables and nuts that you are familiar with; cashews, peanuts, starchy root vegetables and citrus fruits are abundant in the Amazon. I’ve been traveling around Rwanda since 2015 and have lived there twice since 2017. When planning a trip here, these are several things to consider for Rwanda safety.</p> <h2>Gorilla safety</h2> <p>Many travelers are initially drawn to Rwanda for <a href="https://visitrwanda.com/interests/gorilla-tracking/">mountain gorilla tracking</a> in Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda is one of only three countries in the world (alongside Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) that is <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/expeditions/get-inspired/inside-look/mountain-gorilla-silverback-facts-where-they-live/">home to the just over 1,000 mountain gorillas</a> living in the wild.</p> <p>From rainforest terrain to interacting with endangered primates, there are several things to think about to stay safe while gorilla trekking in Rwanda.</p> <ol> <li><strong>Bring proper gear: </strong>This isn’t a curated experience but one in the mountainous rainforests of northern Rwanda. Sturdy hiking boots, breathable waterproof pants, a rain jacket, and a walking stick are essential.</li> <li><strong>Make sure you’re healthy: </strong>We share over <a href="https://www.wwf.org.uk/learn/fascinating-facts/gorillas">98% of our DNA</a> with mountain gorillas, which means that they are susceptible to many of the same illnesses as humans. It’s easy to pick up a cold or flu on your flight over, so give yourself several days between arriving to Kigali and your gorilla experience to allow time to recover from any potential illness.</li> <li><strong>Follow the instructions of your guide: </strong>Before your gorilla trek, you’ll meet at the Kinigi Park Headquarters for Volcanoes National Park. After being divided into groups based on gorilla families, you’ll meet your guide who will set out important guidelines including not using flash photography, keeping at least seven meters away from the gorillas, and avoiding direct eye contact (which can be perceived as a threat).</li> <li><strong>Stay present while on the trek: </strong>Staying present helps you make the most of your experience—and it also ensures your safety. Rainforest terrain can mean twisted branches to climb over and dense trees to move through. The more aware you are, the more carefully you can navigate. Presence will also help you safely interact with the gorillas and follow the safety guidelines. For example, even though you’re instructed to keep your distance from them, the gorillas may approach you. Breathe and stay calm if this happens.</li> </ol> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/rwanda/rwanda-two.jpeg" alt="A wild silverback gorilla" /> <figcaption> Photo credit: Alicia Erickson</figcaption></figure> <h2>Wildlife safety beyond gorillas</h2> <p>While famous for its mountain gorillas, Rwanda is home to a lot of other wildlife. In Volcanoes National Park, you can <a href="https://www.volcanoesparkrwanda.org/information/golden-monkeys-volcanoes-national-park/">trek with golden monkeys</a> and in <a href="https://www.nyungweforestnationalpark.org/">Nyungwe Forest National Park</a> you can <a href="https://www.nyungweforestnationalpark.org/chimpanzee-trekking-nyungwe-forest-national-par/">trek with chimpanzees</a>. These areas require similar protocols for gorillas, though not necessarily as strict. Sturdy shoes, moisture-wicking layers, and a respect for their territory are all important.</p> <p><a href="https://www.worldnomads.com/explore/africa/rwanda/a-wild-safari-and-camping-in-akagera-national-park">Akagera National Park</a> in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, is Central Africa’s largest protected wetlands and home to over five hundred bird species, as well as the Big Five, antelope, zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocs, and more. Akagera is a phenomenal spot for a safari, with options from camping and self-drive adventures to premium lodges in remote sections of the park.</p> <p>If you’re embarking on a solo safari, rent a 4x4 vehicle that can traverse the bumpy terrain, which becomes muddy with rain. It’s recommended to hire a guide from the visitor’s center for the day if you’re a safari first-timer, as they offer nuanced knowledge about the park and its flora and fauna—and can also help you navigate any wildlife encounters, such as a territorial elephant.</p> <figure><img src="https://media.worldnomads.com/travel-safety/rwanda/rwanda-five.jpeg" alt="A wild rhino in Rwanda" /> <figcaption> Photo credit: Alicia Erickson</figcaption></figure> <h2>Road safety</h2> <p>Whether you’re planning to self-drive, hire a driver, cycle, or take public transportation, there are a few things to consider when safely planning your route around Rwanda.</p> <ol> <li><strong>Roads are winding—proceed cautiously. </strong>There are few straight roads in Rwanda, which can make for tedious cycling or driving up and down hilly, mountainous roads. There are often big trucks that slow down the journey. Use caution when navigating the roads and passing slower vehicles.</li> <li><strong>Watch your speed. </strong>Rwanda proudly abides by its rules, and traffic rules are one of them. In recent years, speed cameras have been installed along major roads across the country. If you clock in at 1km over, you automatically get a fine.</li> <li><strong>Be careful of non-vehicle traffic. </strong>Rwanda’s roads are narrow and not occupied by vehicles only. Bicycles (often carrying heavy loads), goats, motorcycles, and pedestrians share the road as well, especially when passing through busy towns.</li> <li><strong>Come prepared to safely ride motorcycles. </strong>Motorcycles are the most common form of public transportation around Kigali (and are a fun way to explore the mountainous country). Traffic can be busy in the city, though, and while motorcycle drivers provide helmets, they almost never fit properly. And it absolutely lives up to that standard—but that doesn’t mean that petty theft doesn’t happen occasionally. Watch your bags and valuables in crowded areas including markets and bus stations. Be careful of your purse when walking on the street, as motorcycle drivers have been known to snatch bags as they zip past. If you’re grabbing a taxi from the airport in Kigali, make sure to only get in an authorized light blue vehicle.</p> <p>Rwanda’s cleanliness and safety also come with some rigid rules. No plastic bags, no stepping on grass, and no eating on the streets, to name a few. Read up on these and respect these rules. Finally, dress modestly in Rwanda’s rural areas to reduce unwanted attention and show respect for the culture.</p> <h2>Sensitive topics to avoid</h2> <p>Political and ethnic topics are still highly sensitive in Rwanda. If your guide or driver offers a friendly discussion about Rwanda’s history, it’s okay to be curious and engage. It’s important to learn the history of where you’re traveling.</p> <p>However, refrain from commentary (in-person or online) about the country’s president or government. As such, it’s important to avoid non-essential travel to the border regions with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).</p> <p>Situations continually evolve, so the best thing you can do is stay up to date with current events and remain vigilant if travel to those regions arise. For example, Gisenyi is a popular lakeside town in Rwandan on the border with the DRC. Evaluate the situation when in-country and if it seems questionable, choose another of Rwanda’s lake towns instead, such as Kibuye.</p> <h2>General Health</h2> <p>As with any developing country you’re planning to visit, there are some things to be aware of to ensure you stay safe and healthy.</p> <ol> <li>Drink bottled or filtered water. Tap water isn’t safe to drink.</li> <li>Avoid swimming in freshwater lakes, which have the possibility of schistosomiasis.</li> <li>Be careful of where you eat food and how it’s prepared.</li> <li>Sleep under mosquito nets and wear insect repellent to minimize risk of malaria.</li> </ol> <p>Health care access is still evolving in Rwanda (and I speak from personal experience dealing with health issues here). You’re okay to get tested for malaria, but the equipment to treat more serious injuries from topical infections to motorcycle injuries is still limited.
