66 countries can apply for an e-visa to Saudi Arabia.

There are laws regarding alcohol, drugs, pornography, illegal imports, certain online activity, and same-sex relationships that could have strict penalties.

Modest dress is advised for visitors.

Tourist visas for travel to Saudi Arabia

It has never been easier to apply for a visa. Members of 66 nations, including the USA, Australia, and most of Europe, can apply for an e-visa online. The e-visa for tourists is valid for one year, for multiple entries of a maximum stay of 90 days each. If you cannot find your country of residence listed on its e-visa website, contact the Saudi Arabian embassy for more information.

Law enforcement in Saudi Arabia

The official system of law in Saudi Arabia is Sharia, which literally means ‘the path to water’. Sharia law has developed from holy scriptures, such as the Qur’an, Islam’s Holy Book, and the Sunnah, the sayings, and records of the Prophet Muhammad. It is as much law, as a guide to moral behavior. While many people balk at Sharia law, it has to be stressed that as a tourist, visitor, or even expatriate, you are very unlikely to ever fall foul of the law, unless you really choose to ignore the local culture and laws.

Under the forward-thinking rule of Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, known as MbS, and Saudi’s 2030 Vision, the formerly feared religious police, or Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), has today been stripped of most of its powers; flogging has been outlawed, and women given rights to travel alone, drive cars, and work freely.

For visitors, the law has eased to an extend that tourists do not have to cover up, although modest dress (covering shoulders and below the knee for both men and women) is advised. In hotels, even non-married tourists are allowed to share rooms, and single female travelers are welcomed, and are free to travel throughout the country.

Missionary behavior, such as preaching a religion other than Islam, is considered a crime in Saudi Arabia. Yet, there has been talks about building a church for Christian worship within the mega-development of Neom in the future. Travelers are allowed to bring a religious text, such as a Bible, into the country, but for personal use only.

Lese majeste

Publicly criticizing the King, the royal family, or the government of Saudi Arabia, is against the law, as is posting any criticism of Saudi Arabia’s law, policies, or behavior on social media platforms. Even if you post negative comments when you're not in Saudi Arabia, you could still be held liable. This even includes just liking someone else's comment that is critical of the Saudi government, its leaders, policies or religion. People have been sentenced to 45 years in prison because of social media posts. Make sure you delete anything that could be considered controversial before you travel to Saudi Arabia.

Criticism of the flag of Saudi Arabia is considered insulting, as it bears the Islamic declaration of faith. Descecration of any other inappropriate use of the flag can lead to serious punishment.

Restrictions in Saudi Arabia

Alcohol

Alcohol has been illegal in Saudi Arabia since 1952. However, one liquor store opened in Riyadh in 2024. It's important to note that the U.S. embassy still states that alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia and can result in jail sentences or death.

Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, the date of which changes every year by around 10 days, it is respectful to avoid eating, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum, between sunrise and sunset hours in public. Most restaurants are closed during the day, but many open after the sun goes down.

Drugs

Personal use, trafficking, or smuggling drugs in Saudi Arabia is illegal and punishment can include the death penalty. If you are bringing medication with you, check ahead of time to see if it is a prescription medication that needs prior approval.

Imports

Beyond the general importation ban of illegal drugs and weapons, alcohol, pork, and pornography are also expressly prohibited.

Pornography is widely defined and may include publications such as women’s fashion magazines if models are shown in undergarmets or swimsuits. On occasion, portable media devices can be seized for inspection by authorities, and you may lose your device if it has anything deemed to be forbidden on it.

Photography

Taking photos in Saudi Arabia can be a touchy subject. Avoid taking pictures of government or military facilities.

If you wish to take pictures of locals, and especially of women, simply ask. Many are more than happy to pose for an interested traveler, just do not attempt to do it sneakily, as that might just upset the wrong person.

Personal ID

Always carry your identification with you at all times. Saudi authorities reserve the right to check your identification, and this is a common occurrence especially if you are passing through security checkpoints.

Safety tips for women travelers

Female travelers can wear moderate clothing, which covers shoulders and ends below the knees in Jeddah, Riyadh, and tourist hot spots such as AlUla. If exploring more remote areas, you might feel more comfortable wearing a loose abaya, the long, flowing robe, typically black, but available and worn in many colors.

Neither local women nor female travelers have to cover their head, even if many choose to do so. It’s a simple and good idea to carry a scarf and abaya in your bag, for occasions where you might feel a little underdressed.

Women travelers can hire cars, and drive without a male chaperone. Despite the obvious separation of genders in many places, travelers have reported that locals are attentive, welcoming and go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable and safe.

That said, lone female travelers are always at risk to some extent, whichever country they are in, and common-sense precautions should always be taken.

Find out more about important dress code laws and etiquette on the Visit Saudi website.

LGBTQ+ travelers

This is one issue where Saudi Arabia has not relaxed the laws, and LGBTQ+ relationships and transgender expression are illegal. Punishments can be severe.

Public displays of affection are not recommended, and this is particularly important for same-sex couples. Act modestly and respectfully. Discretion is everything.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images/orhandurgut	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>1</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>688494594	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Getty Images	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Sunset at Al-Masjid An-Nabawi</imageCaption>

The emirate's strict laws make Dubai almost crime-free, but there are other safety concerns.

https://www.worldnomads.com

At a Glance:

Dubai has traditionally been a safe destination for women.

The United Arab Emirates has strict laws regarding same-sex relationships and public displays of affection are discouraged.

Extreme heat is common during certain times of the year.

Visitors over 21 can rent a car and drive with an International Driver’s License in Dubai.

For journeys into the desert, group safaris are recommended for first-time visitors.

US State Department Travel Advisory for United Arab Emirates (as of July 2026) is at Level 3 due to the threat of armed conflict and terrorism.

As of July 2026, the United Arab Emirates has an elevated travel advisory due to the threat of armed conflict and terrorism. According to the US State Department, there's been a threat of drone and missile attacks due to the war in Iran. There also has been disruption to commercial flights. Prior to that, Dubai, the most populated city in the UAE, had one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Even petty incidents such as pickpocketing are rare. On a recent visit, I never felt uneasy in crowded places or when I was out at night and traveled without worry for my personal safety or my belongings. Personal safety in Dubai is largely attributed to strict laws and a general obedience to the rigorous government.

While Dubai is, in general, less strict than the other Emirates, still be wary of a few sensitive topics, from alcohol laws to LGBTQ+ laws. And despite Dubai’s reputation as a safe place for travelers, there are still some factors to consider when visiting both the city and the emirate of Dubai, including precautions when it comes to extreme heat and desert excursions.

Women’s safety

LGBTQ+safety

Avoiding heat stroke

Desert safety in Dubai

Driving in Dubai

Women’s safety

Generally, Dubai is a very safe destination for women travelers, solo or in a group. English is widely spoken, public transportation is abundant, and there are free WiFi zones located across the city. Personal safety in Dubai is among the highest in the world.

Women’s safety is partly a result of the strict local culture. That being said, I did have a number of unwelcome encounters in bars and clubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi when I was followed around and harassed. I never experienced anything like this on the streets, though.

When it comes to clothes, Dubai is less strict than other emirates, such as more traditional Sharjah, the third largest emirate, where it is advisable to dress conservatively. Due to the large number of Europeans in Dubai, it is relatively acceptable to wear shorts or a short dress in the more westernized establishments. The time of the year when you should be particularly careful about what you dress, however, is during the month of Ramadan, when observances of the Islamic holiday are in place. While this doesn’t require foreign women to cover their heads, it is recommended to dress more modestly, such as wearing pants, a long dress, and modest shirts.

Jaddaf Waterfront, view from Jameel Arts Centre. Photo credit: Alicia Erickson

LGBTQ+ safety

Although Dubai has a cosmopolitan front with its flashy hotels and upscale restaurants, that doesn’t mean it is progressive in every way. The United Arab Emirates has some of the strictest laws surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and Dubai is no exception. Every type of same-sex act is illegal and punishable by severe measures, including fines, deportation, and imprisonment. While the most extreme consequences are typically applicable to Muslims, it is important to be aware of these laws and be cautious about not engaging in same-sex public displays of affection. This rule applies for heterosexual couples as well, for that matter, and all public displays of affection – including holding hands – are illegal and should be avoided.

Avoiding heat stroke

Heat is a significant consideration when visiting Dubai. During a large part of the year, temperatures climb to more than 100°F (38°C). June through September are the hottest months, with the peak heat hitting in August. You’ll need to come prepared for these temperatures if you plan to be outside. Much of the city’s population spends its time inside air-conditioned restaurants and malls during these months to avoid the heat. If you plan to go outside, wear lightweight clothing and stay hydrated. You’ll want to think carefully before planning any outdoor adventures during these hot months. Luckily, there is no shortage of swimming pools at hotels throughout Dubai if you’re hoping to get some sun while staying cool.

While there’s a belief that Dubai is excessively hot year-round, this desert city does experience a few months’ reprieve. November through February have cooler, more pleasant temperatures. January is the coolest month with highs in the mid-70s (low-20s C) and lows in the low-mid 60s (15-18°C). These months are ideal for hiking, camping, and other outdoor excursions.

Desert safety in Dubai

Accessing the desert on your own as a first-time visitor is not recommended unless you’re an experienced outdoor adventurer. There are plenty of types of four-wheel drive desert safaris you can book with a local guide, or you can choose to pay a visit to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

The desert can reach even more extreme temperatures than the city, so it’s important to pack appropriately. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that keeps you covered from the sun. Use sunscreen and bring sufficient water. If you do choose to embark on a solo desert excursion, know that you’ll be in wide swaths of sand with minimal to no infrastructure and intermittent phone service. Always bring more than enough water and food, hydration tablets, a spare tire, and appropriate camping gear if you’re staying overnight. While there are no large predators in the Dubai desert, be aware of venomous critters such as vipers, scorpions, and spider species endemic on the Arabian Peninsula.

Dubai’s Desert Conservation Area. Photo credit: Alicia Erickson

Driving in Dubai

One of the most exciting parts about exploring a new place is the freedom to drive through unknown territory. Non-residents can drive in Dubai with an international driver’s license and you can rent a car if you are over 21.

Dubai is a very busy city with massive highways that can be daunting at first. Maneuvering the multi-lane highways is initially intimidating, there are helpful traffic signs in both Arabic and English. The left lane is the fastest and should be avoided if you’re not comfortable contending with aggressive drivers. Be aware of speed limits and traffic rules to avoid traffic fines.

While there is a certain thrill to off-roading on sand dunes, ensure that if you head off for a sand bashing adventure, you’re equipped with spare tires and a car with four-wheel drive.

<imageAttribution>Alicia Erickson	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Despite growing concern about safety in Rio, travelers continue to flock to this incredible seaside city. Here's everything you need to know to stay safe.

https://www.worldnomads.com

At a Glance

Tourist safety varies widely across different parts of Rio de Janeiro

Certain areas become more dangerous for foreigners at night due to high rates of street crime

Hiring a tour guide may improve your safety by helping you avoid scams and risky locations, including favelas

The city tends to reward visitors who are wary, observant, and avoid drawing attention

Travel insurance may prove valuable should something unexpected happen in Rio

South America’s most iconic tourist city, Rio de Janeiro is famous for its sterling beaches, jungled peaks, and Christ the Redeemer landmark, and infamous for its slums, gangs, and street crime. During my visits to Rio, I learned it can be safely visited by tourists who are cautious and vigilant, but is extremely dangerous for those whose behaviour is naïve or bold. Here’s some tips for avoiding trouble in this wonderful Brazilian metropolis.

Does Rio deserve its reputation as a dangerous city?

Rio is globally renowned as being crime riddled, and is ranked as the world’s 13th most dangerous city on the Crime Index by leading metrics website Numbeo. That placed it above other cities infamous for street crime, like Cape Town in South Africa, Tijuana in Mexico, and Cali in Colombia.

Tourists rarely need to be concerned by the city’s gangs, or the high murder rate they cause, because their violent crimes are mostly targeted at other gang members, and typically occur in the favela slums. But because 17% of Rio residents live in poverty, it does have thousands of petty criminals who target tourists. Here are some of the biggest threats to tourists:

Pickpocketing in crowded touristy locations, like street markets, or Christ the Redeemer.

Street robberies in quiet spots within the city, where police and witnesses are absent.

Theft at Rio’s beaches, where tourists often make the mistake of leaving valuables in the sand.

Night time sightseeing is far more risky, even in locations which are quite safe by day, like Copacabana beach.

Don’t draw attention to yourself

Being inconspicuous as a tourist is almost always a good thing, but is especially valuable in cities with street crime problems. Unfortunately, as a 197cm tall Caucasian man, it’s very difficult for me to go unnoticed, but here’s five other ways I maintained a low profile to avoid unwanted attention in Rio:

Don’t talk too loudly. Crafty street criminals will not only pay more attention to you, but can also eavesdrop to glean information about your movements, plans, or even where you are storing valuables.

Don’t wear garish clothes. Keep the pink Hawaiian shirt in your suitcase and wear something less eyecatching.

Don’t flash your valuables. Keep your phone, wallet and camera out of sight whenever possible.

Don’t linger outside tourist hotspots. Petty criminals lurk there hunting victims, so start walking immediately to your next location or, as I often did in Rio, have a rideshare car already waiting to pick you up.

Tour guides can also act as security guards

Before I even left my Rio de Janeiro hotel for my first adventure, I’d been repeatedly advised about the dangers I’d face as a photographer walking around the city with a big, expensive camera. These warnings came from a Brazilian passenger on my flight, an immigration officer at Rio airport, and then the concierge at my hotel. Following the advice of these locals, I hired a tour guide, which I then learned has the following safety benefits:

Rio tour guides essentially double up as security guards. While I was distracted taking photos, my guide was watching my back, making sure no petty thief was creeping up on me.

Guides can give you honest advice about which parts of the city are dangerous. For example, I’d read online a museum I wished to visit was in a no-go zone for tourists. Whereas my guide said that area was perfectly safe, and so I went there and found he was correct.

Rio’s beaches are riddled with theft

I hired that guide in Rio because I had to do a long photo shoot at Copacabana beach, and locals told me I could easily be robbed walking around there with an expensive camera, even in broad daylight. My guide, Celio, had done so many tours of Copacabana that he recognises many of the local petty criminals, and regularly pointed them out to me.

Here’s three tips for staying safe at Rio’s beautiful beaches:

Never leave any valuables on the sand, with your towel and clothes, as thieves will pounce while you swim.

Avoid Rio’s beaches at night, when the cover of darkness makes thieves and robbers more brazen.

Beware of visiting quiet beaches, where criminals can target you with few or no witnesses around.

Which neighbourhoods are safe?

Rio is a massive, sprawling metropolitan area, home to about 14 million people, which makes it similar in size to New York City. Understandably, then, the safety of its suburbs varies greatly, from no-go slums, to wealthy beachfront areas, and the largely-safe Centro downtown precinct.

Favelas – Rio’s labyrinthine, hillside slums, called favelas, are riven by poverty and drug use, and roamed by gang members who range from petty criminals to savage killers. Do not visit the favelas alone, and reconsider joining guided tours of these slums.

Centro – Rio’s downtown area brims with museums, churches and shopping areas. Its busiest areas are quite safe in the daylight, but most of Centro becomes risky after dark, when street criminals are abundant.

Copacabana – Perhaps the world’s most famous beach, Copacabana is flanked by dozens of tourist hotels, restaurants and bars. During the day, pickpocketing is the main threat, but by night violent crime becomes a serious concern.

Lapa – Bars, restaurants and Samba clubs line the streets of Rio’s chief nightlife area, Lapa. Safety is solid inside its venues. But avoid lingering in its streets at night. If you’re walking from one venue to another, do so quickly.

Scams in Rio

Poverty pushes some Rio residents to make money from scamming tourists, so here’s three scams to watch out for.

Volunteering to take your photo – Some scammers approach foreigners taking selfies at tourist spots, politely offer to take a photo for them, and then flee when the tourist gives them their phone.

Distraction pickpockets – A street criminal will distract you – bumping into you, spilling a drink on you – while their accomplice slips their hand into your bag or pocket.

Fake tickets – Outside famed attractions like Christ the Redeemer, scammers wearing what look like official uniforms may approach you and sell you a fake entry ticket. Only buy attraction tickets from the official booths.

These statements relating to potential scams do not constitute a representation of policy coverage or suitability. See the policy wording for full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

Travel Insurance for Rio de Janeiro

Even with the right precautions, things can still go wrong in a city like Rio de Janeiro, which is where travel insurance may become an important backup plan. If you’re carrying valuables like cameras or phones, or relying on pre-booked tours and accommodation, a policy may help cover theft (up to policy limits), unexpected cancellations, or medical expenses if you’re injured or fall ill. Street crime is the most common risk here, and while staying alert reduces your chances of trouble, it doesn’t eliminate them entirely. Having travel insurance won’t make Rio safer, but it may give you some financial protection if your trip takes an unexpected turn.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

<imageAttribution>Photo by Raphael Nogueira on Unsplash	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>OkiDIla7K8Q	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>Unsplash	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Rio de Janeiro, Brazil</imageCaption>

Here's how to stay safe and alert while discovering one of Brazil's most alluring cities.

https://www.worldnomads.com

At a Glance

São Paulo is often seen as a relatively dangerous city, though citywide crackdowns on crime are helping improve its reputation.

Tourists should stay alert for common issues such as cellphone theft, bank card skimming, and nightlife scams, particularly on Rua Augusta.

Brazil’s most powerful gang, the First Capital Command (PCC), also operates in the city.

Safer, more tourist-friendly areas to stay in include Jardins and Pinheiros.

Brazil’s biggest city, São Paulo has a staggering 22 million residents, equivalent to New York and Chicago combined. Most metropolises that gigantic have an array of safety issues, and São Paulo is no different, although I felt less at risk here than I did in fellow Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro. Tourists can enjoy a safe trip to São Paulo, just like me, if they pay attention to the following tips.

How dangerous is São Paulo?

Your cell phone is the main target

Which São Paulo neighbourhoods are safe?

Who are the infamous First Capital Command?

Scams in São Paulo

How dangerous is São Paulo?

Brazil has made great progress in improving its safety levels nationwide over the past decade, and that includes in its biggest city, São Paulo. In 2025, Brazil recorded 34,086 murders, a giant reduction on the 60,308 homicides it saw in 2017.

Meanwhile, São Paulo in 2025 recorded its lowest rate of robberies in 25 years. This is widely attributed to enhanced policing efforts, including the recent rollout across São Paulo of tens of thousands of CCTV cameras with AI facial recognition capabilities.

Police have used this technology to arrest more than 1,000 fugitives, and São Paulo street criminals are now wary of being identified by these sophisticated cameras. All of which means this city is now undeniably safer for tourists. Personally, I found the ubiquity of its CCTV cameras made me feel more secure as I walked the city’s streets alone with a camera in hand.

Your cell phone is the main target

At first, I thought locals in São Paulo were just remarkably uninterested in using their phones, but later I realised they were just trying to keep these devices out of sight while in public, for the sake of safety. While robberies in São Paulo are dropping, this crime now increasingly focuses on cell phones.

Stats show that 87% of robberies in this city involve the theft of a cell phone. Street criminals in São Paulo now prefer to steal cell phones more than any other valuable, because organised crime syndicates need these phones to fuel their vast cybercrime operations.

Brazil has one of the world’s highest rates of cybercrime, with some of the nation’s most sophisticated gangs now gradually shifting from drugs and prostitution to making vast sums of money from online scams. Rather than attempting to hack into people’s online accounts to steal their personal details, these gangs often find it easier to just steal someone’s phone, and then access all the sensitive information it holds.

Here’s three tips to protect yourself from phone thieves and robbers:

Minimise the amount of time you use your phone in public, and don’t hold it in your hand when not using it.

Avoid standing on the very edge of streets, as phone thieves like to skid up on a motorbike, grab your phone and flee. Instead, stand well back from the street on the sidewalk.

If your phone is stolen or robbed, immediately return to your hotel and go online to deactivate your phone’s SIM card, and to put a block on any of your phone’s apps that are linked to banking or sensitive information.

Get a police report, as this may be needed if you intend to file a travel insurance claim with World Nomads. The more information you provide, the more likely your claim will be processed quickly.

Contact World Nomads’ Emergency Assistance line as soon as possible and let the team know what happened.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

Which São Paulo neighbourhoods are safe?

São Paulo’s vast size means its suburbs vary massively, in terms of safety and suitability for tourists. Here’s a rundown of five of its best known areas:

Jardins – Perhaps São Paulo’s wealthiest and safest area, Jardins stands out due to its leafy, low-rise environment, which contrasts with its concrete-laden, skyscraper-heavy surroundings. I stayed close to Oscar Freire street, a graceful thoroughfare lined by chic hotels, bars and restaurants.

Pinheiros – While Jardins is where São Paulo’s millionaires live, Pinheiros is where its funky folk hang out. It is well stocked with accommodation – from boutique hotels to five-star properties – as well as hosting many art galleries, hip fashion outlets and cool wine bar.

República – By day there’s plenty of reasons to visit Republica, a historic area of downtown decorated by shady parks, elegant plazas and historic landmarks like the magnificent Municipal Theatre of São Paulo. By night, however, its dimly-lit streets fill with drug dealers and petty criminals and is best avoided.

Cracolândia – Its name hints at crack cocaine, which is one of many potent, illegal drugs openly sold on the streets of this dysfunctional and dangerous area.

Favelas – São Paulo’s outer suburbs have major issues with poverty and drugs, and are dotted by many favela slums, which should be avoided by tourists.

Who are the infamous First Capital Command?

Swathes of São Paulo are controlled not by police, but by Brazil’s most powerful gang, the First Capital Command. Similar to Italy’s Mafia, China’s Triads, or Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, this Brazilian organised crime syndicate is impossibly wealthy, ferociously violent, and has deep influence over their country’s politics and policing. More than 11,000 members run São Paulo’s drug, prostitution, people smuggling, and black-market weapon markets.

Tourists are rarely caught in their crosshairs, as crimes against foreigners earn far greater attention, and the First Capital Command do not want added scrutiny from Brazilian authorities. But travellers must still be wary of their threat, particularly in São Paulo’s poor outer suburbs.

Scams in São Paulo

Although robberies and homicides are down in São Paulo, this city still has a major issue with scams, including those targeted specifically at tourists. Here’s a few scams to look out for:

Card skimming. When using an ATM in São Paulo, be wary that local criminals commonly attach devices to ATMs that allow them to steal your banking information. To protect yourself, only use ATMs inside a bank, which are heavily secured.

Taxi scams. One of the oldest and most common tourist scams in São Paulo involves taxi drivers either using hacked meters, which send the fare rising at a dizzying speed, or refusing to use the meter and quoting an inflated flat fare. Avoid this issue by instead booking all your transport via the Uber app, and turning on all of its safety features.

Nightlife scams. São Paulo’s nightlife is wonderfully vibrant, but tourists need to be cautious, especially alone Rua Augusta street. Avoid venues with pushy staff standing outside who try to pressure you to enter. These bars commonly scam tourists by handing them wildly inflated bills at the end of the night.

At a glance

Safety across the Philippines varies significantly by location.

Popular tourist areas like Boracay and Ayala Triangle generally pose fewer risks.

Some areas, such as Mindanao and Tondo, have higher levels of violence.

Gun crime is a widespread concern and terrorism remains a threat in parts of the southern Philippines.

Tourist scams are relatively common.

Overall, the Philippines may be safe if you stay in well-traveled areas and use common sense.

With 7,640 islands and a population of over 117 million, the Philippines is a vast and diverse destination offering something for every traveller. At the same time, safety can vary across the country, with some areas among the safest in Southeast Asia, and others the most dangerous. Here’s a guide to help you stay safe while exploring the Philippines.

Why the Philippines is considered a safe destination

Tourism is incredibly important to the Philippines’ economy, accounting for 20% of its GDP in 2025. So Filipino authorities try to ensure safety in its popular tourist enclaves, like Boracay, Palawan, and Manila’s Ayala Triangle. Such areas are commonly patrolled by armed police or private security. This is part of the Philippines’ strong tourism infrastructure which also includes:

Well-connected international airports.

A vast array of accommodation.

Endless variety of restaurants and bars.

Cheap public transport - taxis, trains, buses.

Excellent standard of English spoken by locals.

Is Manila safe for travelers?

Manila is gargantuan, home to 27 million people, equal to the population of Australia. Its suburbs range greatly, from slums, to gated communities of mansions. So tourist safety fluctuates enormously, based on the following locations.

Ayala Triangle - I’ve rarely felt safer anywhere in Southeast Asia than in downtown Manila’s rich, modern Ayala Triangle area, lined by fancy shopping centres and plush condos, and patrolled by armed private security.

Intramuros – Manila’s best tourist attraction, Intramuros is a 16th century citadel built by the occupying Spaniards. By day, it’s a safe area to wander and sightsee, although by night it becomes far more dangerous.

Malate – My first time in Manila I made the mistake of staying in Malate. I assumed it was safe due to hosting tourist attractions like Manila Zoo, the Baywalk promenade, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. But it’s also home to a nightlife area brimming with street crime.

Tondo – Tourists are unlikely to visit Tondo deliberately. But they could accidentally wander into this dangerous slum, because it borders the touristy Chinatown area. Tondo residents suffer from inadequate housing, health, education and employment services. As a result, crime flourishes.

How dangerous are Boracay and Palawan?

Tourists adore Boracay and Palawan, tropical beach getaways blessed by sublime coastal scenery. Here’s safety issues to consider at these two beautiful destinations.

Water sports scams – Many tourists to Boracay and Palawan do watersport activities like jet skiing. Unfortunately, it’s easy for them to be scammed. Most commonly, when they rent a jetski, they don’t notice it’s covered by subtle pieces of tape, which hide pre-existing damage. Once you return the jet ski, the scamming vendor will surreptitiously remove the tape, claim you caused that damage, and give you an enormous bill for repairs. Stay safe by only renting a jetski via a reputable hotel.

Speed boat danger – Speed boat tours of neighouring islands and beaches are popular with tourists to Boracay and Palawan. Unfortunately, they have poor safety standards. Often they speed, ignore severe weather warnings, and don’t have sufficient life jackets on board. If you want to visit another island, it’s best to book this activity with a reputable hotel.

Scams in the Philippines

Unfortunately, poverty is so widespread in the Philippines that some desperate people resort to scamming tourists to survive. Here’s three of the most common scams and how to avoid them.

Money changing scam - My late father, a veteran traveller, fell prey to this common scam in Manila. Money changers advertise an extremely attractive exchange rate to lure tourists. The vendor takes your foreign currency, counts it on a benchtop, and then shows you the correct amount of Philippines Pesos. As they give you the Pesos, they use sleight of hand to drop some of these notes under the benchtop. The solution: Always change money inside banks.

Manila horse-drawn carriage scam – Horse-drawn carriage rides are offered at several of Manila’s most popular tourist areas. Unfortunately, some of these operators rip off foreigners. When tourists ask for a ride, the driver will tell them to get in, then avoid discussing the price. At journey’s end, they’ll quote an exorbitant figure and, if you object, will raise their voice and gesticulate to intimidate and embarrass you. To be safe, confirm the price first or avoid the carriages altogether, as the horses may not be treated kindly.

Taxi scams - Unfortunately, a minority of Filipino taxi drivers refuse to use their meter and then massively overcharge foreigners. So, before I enter a taxi here, I ask the driver if they’ll use the meter, and then watch them activate it. Typically, the scamming drivers wait around outside the busiest tourist areas. Avoid them by ordering a taxi on your phone via apps like Grab.

These statements relating to potential scams do not constitute a representation of policy coverage or suitability. See the policy wording for full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

Gun crime in the Philippines

The Philippines has a huge firearm problem, with more than 600,000 unregistered guns in the country, according to research by the University of Sydney. While most of this gun crime occurs in slums, where tourists are unlikely to venture, travellers still need to take precautions to avoid being robbed:

Do not pull out wads of cash in public. Where possible, it is safer to pay for things using your bankcard.

Do not wear expensive jewelry, leave it in the lockbox of your hotel room.

Try to minimize the amount of time you are holding your expensive phone. Instead, keep it tucked away.

Travel Insurance in the Philippines

Travel insurance may play an important role when visiting the Philippines, where safety can vary and unexpected situations may arise. Whether you’re exploring busy cities, remote islands, or taking part in water activities, having travel insurance may help protect your wallet against unforeseen events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, delays, or stolen belongings. If something goes wrong, it may also give you access to 24/7 emergency assistance. While it won’t prevent incidents from happening, travel insurance plans, like those from World Nomads, may provide valuable support in dealing with the aftermath.

Terrorism in the Philippines

Few places in the world are as plagued by terrorism as Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines, located in its deep south. For decades it has been haunted by Islamic terrorists, most prominently the Abu Sayyaf Group. Here’s what to know:

The US Government not only advises its citizens to reconsider traveling to Mindanao, but instructs them to completely avoid Marawi, in western Mindanao.

In 2017, pro-Islamic-State extremists laid siege to Marawi City for five months, leading to hundreds of deaths as they fought against the Philippines military.

More recently, terrorists have executed bombings and suicide attacks in public spaces in Mindanao.

If you must visit there, you should be wary of visiting crowded places that are attractive targets for attacks, like shopping centres, nightlife precincts and busy markets.

Find out why.

https://www.worldnomads.com

The most memorable travel adventures take many forms. Perhaps one of the key indicators that you’re out of your familiar surroundings are the cultural differences in using toilets around the world.

Adjusting to different types of conveniences can often be amusing, but tricky to get used to and sometimes a bit unsanitary. It helps to arm yourself with information in advance so you’re prepared in your moment of need.

What's different about Greek toilets?

What is the toilet etiquette in Greece?

Are toilets the same everywhere in Greece?

How common are squat toilets in Greece?

Can I drink the tap water in Greece?

General hygiene for Greece

What's different about Greek toilets?

Greek plumbing systems are often more delicate than those in the US or UK, with narrower sewage pipes that can easily become blocked by toilet paper or other items. This is largely due to older infrastructure and drainage systems, which were not designed to handle the same waste volumes or materials common in modern Western plumbing.

As a result, many toilets in Greece, particularly in older buildings and on some islands, ask visitors to dispose of toilet paper in a bin rather than flushing it.

Greece actually has a long history of early sanitation innovation: the first known flushing toilets date back to the Palace of Knossos on Crete (around 1700 BC). While modern plumbing has of course evolved significantly since then, many parts of the country still rely on legacy or constrained sewage systems, meaning pipes remain narrower and more prone to clogging if non-human waste is flushed.

In short, while infrastructure varies widely today, the safest general rule for travelers is still to avoid flushing toilet paper unless signage clearly indicates it is permitted.

What is the toilet etiquette in Greece?

The biggest thing to note is simply this: don’t flush toilet paper down the loo.

What happens if you do flush toilet paper? Due to the narrow pipes, you may end up with a clogged or overflowing toilet – unpleasant and embarrassing, to say the least.

You will find there are bins to the side of the toilet where you can dispose of your tissue instead. The bins tend to have lids and foot pedals and are emptied at least once daily, so it’s not as gruesome as it sounds. You will find there are signs in toilets everywhere to remind you of this, from hotel rooms to cafes and tourist hotspots.

Are toilets the same everywhere in Greece?

More modern hotels, airports and shopping developments in Greece have improved designs and sewage networks and might offer toilets with better flushing facilities, but obviously, it depends on where you go.

Greek blogger Vanessa Fou has traveled widely around her country and shares tips and advice for visitors on her website realgreekexperiences.com. She says toilets vary depending on the region and type of establishment you are visiting.

“Upmarket hotels, restaurants and airports will typically have clean and well-maintained toilets. The toilets in some local tavernas, coffee shops, bus stations and even ancient sites might not be as well-maintained,” she says. “It's always advisable to carry tissue with you, as sometimes toilet paper may have run out.”

It’s also a good tip to wrap your used toilet tissue with a few sheets of clean paper, to make just the clean paper waste visible which will be a bit less icky for you and everyone else who has to use or empty the bin.

But don’t freak out about the whole situation, it really isn’t as bad as it sounds.

How common are squat toilets in Greece?

These are another thing to keep in mind. They're not very common, but something you might encounter in remote areas. Greece’s squat toilets are exactly as you imagine: a toilet without a toilet seat and bowl, and two panels to place your feet on either side of the hole.

Fou says you might find them at places such as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Meteora Monasteries – built in the 14th century and which teeter dramatically on the tops of cliffs and rock formations, so it’s entirely forgivable that the site’s toilets might not be the most modern.

If you do come across squat toilets, Fou’s advice for women is that the lower you squat, the better. It goes without saying that the area may not be as clean as you like and you should take extra care when wearing sandals or flip-flops.

Can I drink the tap water in Greece?

In general, Fou says hygiene standards can vary across popular tourist destinations.“You can safely drink tap water in many areas of Greece,” she says.

“This includes the big cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki, most of the mainland and certain islands. On smaller islands, such as Santorini, tap water is not always drinkable, so you should drink bottled water.

“It's always best to ask the locals at each place you visit if it's safe to drink tap water.”

Planning a trip to Greece? Find out how travel insurance can help in case of unexpected illness, lost luggage, or other travel mishaps.

General hygiene for Greece

As with travel to any country, it helps to arm yourself with information so you know what you’re dealing with before you go. Greece has high standards of food safety and hygiene, but treating everything with a common-sense approach goes a long way.

Wash your hands regularly: after using the toilet, before eating food, after visiting food markets and so on. A little bottle of hand sanitizer is also a useful and easy item to carry around.

When eating out, be careful with food that may have been washed, like salads and fruits, when you’re not certain about water safety. The same goes for ice in drinks.

If, for whatever reason, you do need healthcare in Greece, remember that British and EU nationals are entitled to free care under the European Health Insurance Card. Australia, the US and other nations need to make sure they have travel insurance in place.

<imageAttribution>iStock/JudyDillon	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>531308568	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption>Ancient toilets in Greece</imageCaption>

Mexico has a vibrant and passionate football culture, but also something of a reputation for danger. Here’s what to know before traveling to the World Cup in Mexico.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Known for its vibrant football culture and passionate fans, Mexico will be the first country to host three World Cup tournaments (1970, 1986, and 2026). FIFA officials expect this year’s tournament to draw some 5.5 million visitors throughout Mexico.

An event of this size, held in a country that has recently experienced a wave of cartel violence, has many travelers wondering if the World Cup will be safe for visitors. Here’s what to know before you go, and safety tips to help keep your visit trouble-free.

Crime concerns during the FIFA World Cup 2026

Health care access for visitors to Mexico

World Cup safety in host cities

Mexico City safety

Guadalajara safety

Monterrey safety

Transportation and taxi safety

Protests and large gatherings

Practical safety tips for visiting Mexico during the World Cup

Crime concerns during the FIFA World Cup 2026

Despite Mexico’s reputation for crime, visitors should keep in mind that it is a very large and diverse country. The US State Department has issued a travel advisory of Level 2: Use increased caution for Mexico, the same level as Spain and Sweden. However, some areas are best avoided due to the risk of kidnapping and drug cartel violence.

Cartel violence in Mexico

Drug cartels and organized crime are an unfortunate reality in Mexico, particularly in certain states and border areas.

In late February 2026, cartel violence in Mexico made international headlines when Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, known as El Mencho, was killed in the state of Jalisco. In retaliation, cartel members set fire to vehicles and businesses and created roadblocks in at least 13 states. Tourists in some regions, including the popular seaside resort town of Puerto Vallarta, were told to shelter in place, and numerous airlines cancelled flights.

The chaos has since died down. Former drug war correspondent Joe Furey told World Nomads, “I doubt there's much more danger of cartel retaliation. What we saw was proof of loyalty, nothing more – necessary bluster.”

“Cartels are, at root, financial organizations,” he pointed out. “Their money is not confined to drugs, extortion, and other overtly illegal rackets. It’s also washed and reinvested through legitimate businesses and professional laundering networks.”

In that way, the World Cup is an economic opportunity for cartels. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, author of a new book on Mexican cartels, says she thinks the cartels are likely to keep a low profile during the event, so as not to drive away tourists.

Tourist zones

Most of the cartel-related violence is related to turf wars between rival gangs, and typically happens away from tourist areas, as local authorities go to great lengths to keep those areas safe. Though there have been isolated cases where tourists were caught in the crossfire, sticking to resort areas and tourist zones is still one of the best ways to stay out of trouble.

Government travel advisories

Due in part to cartel violence, the US State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel travel advisory for the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. While none of the FIFA World Cup venues are in these states, Guadalajara’s World Cup venue is in Jalisco, which is currently at a Level 3: Reconsider Travel level.

Health care access for visitors to Mexico

Mexico has both public and private health care systems, but the public system is generally intended for residents enrolled in national programs. If you’re visiting Mexico and need medical care, you’ll usually be treated at a private clinic or hospital and may be expected to pay for services upfront. Your personal health insurance may not cover expenses if you get sick or injured while traveling abroad.

To help avoid paying out of pocket for potentially expensive medical bills, it may be wise to consider travel insurance with emergency medical coverage.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

World Cup safety in host cities

Mexico is hosting 13 World Cup matches across three cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. But is Mexico safe for soccer fans?

Following the cartel violence, FIFA representatives met with Mexican authorities to discuss security at the World Cup and review the intelligence, prevention, and operational protocols that were planned.

On March 6, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to deploy as many as 100,000 security personnel in host cities and tourist areas during the tournament – 20,000 military personnel, 55,000 police officers, and members of private security companies.

The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, expressed his “complete confidence in Mexico, in its president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and in the authorities."

Mexico City safety

Mexico’s capital city is a vibrant, sprawling, sophisticated metropolis, offering rich history and modern culture. The city will host five matches at the venerable Estadio Azteca (renamed Estadio de Ciudad de México for the World Cup), including the opening match of the tournament on June 11. In anticipation of huge crowds, Mexico City has a host of infrastructure and security projects in the works, including:

Large-scale security improvements at Mexico City International Airport

Deployment of counter-drones to protect stadiums and fan zones

A new train line connecting Mexico City with Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía (around 30 miles away)

Complete renovation of Metro Line 1

Renovated tourist routes and new streetlights in the city center

Creation of 208 mi (334km) of “safe paths” featuring LED lighting, video surveillance cameras, and emergency buttons that connect pedestrians with authorities

17 additional trains on the light rail route leading to the stadium

The stadium is also being completely renovated and brought up to FIFA security and safety standards. Updates include:

100 new security cameras

Improved elevators, circulation routes, and accessibility

Updated entrances, stairs, and corridors to improve traffic flow and eliminate bottlenecks

Redesigned road and pedestrian accesses to the station

Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at the FIFA Fan Festival in the Zócalo, Mexico City’s massive central square. Crowds of up to 100,000 are expected on days when Mexico’s team is playing.

LGBTQ+ fans will find a welcoming, safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub at Pride House Mexico City 2026. Events will also take place in Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Guadalajara safety

Birthplace of mariachi music, birria, and the sombrero, Guadalajara is a big, fun-loving city that’s stayed true to its roots.

The city is undergoing a variety of safety and infrastructure improvements ahead of the World Cup, including:

Expansion of the Chapala highway connecting Guadalajara to the international airport

A new Line 5 of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system connecting the airport with the stadium and downtown

Upgrades to the historic downtown, such as new streetlights and improved pedestrian crossings

Plans to deploy drones and AI-driven video surveillance to provide security

Estadio Akron in Zapopan (part of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area) will host four matches and will be renamed Estadio Guadalajara for the tournament. The stadium is being renovated with:

New signage offering greater visibility of emergency exits and security points

A Sensory Room designed for neurodivergent guests

Improved communications infrastructure and more security cameras

The Fan Festival will be held at Plaza Liberación in the city’s historic center.

Monterrey safety

Located in the state of Nuevo León, Monterrey is the industrial capital of Mexico, featuring tall skyscrapers against the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains.

The city will host four FIFA World Cup matches. Infrastructure and security updates ahead of the event include:

An extensive airport renovation to improve passenger flow and reduce wait times

4,000 new buses and 500 new bus stops

Construction of new Metro lines and renovation of Line 1 (the most direct line to the stadium)

New headquarters built and seven new divisions added to the Civil Force (state police force)

Estadio BBVA (renamed Estadio Monterrey for the tournament) was built in 2015 and is well-designed for accessibility. But there are still improvements in the works for the World Cup, such as:

Cashless payment for stadium purchases

Robotic dogs deployed around the perimeter to detect hazardous materials

AI-assisted surveillance that can analyze crowd behavior in real time

Around 7,000 dedicated officers placed around stadiums and transit corridors

Monterrey’s Fan Festival will be held in Parque Fundidora, a large urban park with a capacity of around 40,000 fans.

Transportation and taxi safety

All three host cities have extensive public transit systems that have been expanded or upgraded in advance of the World Cup. The metro or light rail will likely be the easiest and most efficient way to get to the venues.

Safety tips for public transit

Pickpockets are common on public transit, especially on crowded cars and at peak travel times, so keep your belongings secure

Stay vigilant in busy stations and major transfer points

Beware of distraction tactics where one person spills something on you or causes a commotion while their accomplice steals your belongings

Taxi safety in Mexico

Express kidnappings – where a taxi driver picks up the victim, takes them to an ATM, and forces them to take out cash – have been known to occur in Mexico. To avoid trouble:

Never hail a taxi – even one that looks properly licensed – off the street

At transport hubs, pick up taxis from authorized taxi kiosks

Have your accommodation or restaurant order you a licensed taxi, or use ride-sharing apps

Protests and large gatherings

Avoid protests, as they can become violent. It’s also illegal for foreigners in Mexico to take part in political activity.

If attending a large gathering such as a Fan Festival:

Keep your belongings secure, as pickpockets often target crowded areas

Know where the exits are and prepare a strategy in case the crowd gets out of hand

Keep an eye on your companions and have a planned meeting place and time if you get separated

Practical safety tips for visiting Mexico during the World Cup

Along with the tips above, these general travel tips can help you avoid trouble during the tournament or whenever you visit Mexico.

Enlist in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (US citizens) or similar programs to get alerts from your embassy and help them contact you in an emergency

Stick to patrolled tourist zones and resort areas

Travel in groups – there is safety in numbers

Leave valuables at your hotel and carry only the money you need for the day

Stay alert and aware of your surroundings

Don’t sling bags over the back of your chair, leave your wallet or phone out on a table, or walk around with your phone in your hand, as snatch-and-grabs do occur

Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen and sun-protective clothing

Always drink in moderation and never leave your drink unattended

Avoid isolated spots, particularly at night

Don’t travel at night outside major cities

How will the World Cup fan experience vary in each country? Our guide breaks it down.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Soccer (better known as football) is the world’s most popular sport, with around 5 billion fans worldwide according to FIFA. That’s 2.5 billion more than cricket, the second most popular sport. Soccer fans are known for their loyalty, passion, creative (and sometimes profane) chants, and rituals such as “tifos”. These are massive banners or mosaic-like displays made of squares of cardboard that fans hold up to form words or images – the designs are planned well in advance and can fill an entire stadium.

In June 2026, fans from around the world will bring this unique energy to the FIFA World Cup 2026. This tournament will be the largest of its kind ever held, and the first to be hosted by three nations: Canada, the US, and Mexico. 42 nations will compete in 104 matches.

If you’re planning to attend the World Cup but haven’t experienced major soccer matches before, what can you expect at the tournament? Read on to learn how soccer culture differs between nations, and what it will be like to watch the beautiful game played on such a grand scale.

Differences in soccer culture between nations

Mexico

Mexican fútbol culture is legendary. Mexico is one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world, right up there with England, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, and soccer is by far the most popular sport. Matches are noisy and boisterous affairs, and fans may end up showered with beer and popcorn.

Joe Furey, a former drug war correspondent frequently based in Mexico, told World Nomads, “Compared to the US and Canada, when I’ve watched football in Mexico the atmosphere has been rowdier, more physical, and more continuous – chanting that doesn’t stop, drums, flags, whole sections on their feet. But it's just ritual, not a menace. And the Mexican authorities know how to police it, at least in built-up areas with larger stadiums.”

Mexican soccer games are also family-friendly, with multiple generations in attendance – more so than Argentina or Brazil.

United States

Though many people in the US grow up playing soccer, and community soccer leagues can be seen on fields across the country, professional soccer has been relatively slow to catch on. Major League Soccer (MLS) still lags behind the national football, baseball, basketball, and hockey leagues in popularity. But the gap is closing.

Interest in soccer is at an all-time high, fueled by interest in international leagues such as the UK’s Premier League, the recent successes of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, and the arrival of international superstars such as Lionel Messi and David Beckham on MLS teams. More than 11 million fans attended MLS matches in 2025.

And while the fervor of the fan base may not rival Mexico, there’s still plenty of passion. Avid fans of MLS teams have formed supporter groups who buy up blocks of seats at games, where they chant and create tifos.

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams have their own supporter group, the American Outlaws. They will be in full force at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Mexican National Team also has a massive and enthusiastic fan base in the US, with some 65 million supporters.

Canada

MLS, like the NHL, MLB, and NBA, has teams in both the US and Canada. While soccer is the most widely played sport in Canada, MLS ranks behind professional hockey, basketball, baseball, and both American and Canadian football as a spectator sport. But, as in the US, Canadian interest in soccer is growing – and the Canadian national team has become one of the best teams in North and Central America. Membership in the Voyageurs, Team Canada’s supporter group, is surging ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Soccer culture at the FIFA World Cup

The atmosphere at World Cup stadiums might have more to do with the teams playing than with the host city or country. Each team’s set of fans will bring their own personality and traditions to the matches – for example, host cities are preparing for some 10,000 members of the Orange Army (fans of the Dutch team) to flood the streets as they march en masse towards the stadium.

All stadiums have seating sections for supporters – the national teams often set aside tickets for supporter groups such as the Voyageurs. These sections will feature chanting, face paint, silly hats, flags, tifas, and high levels of enthusiasm.

In other sections of the stadium, many fans might not have a strong preference for either team but are there for the experience. If fans bought tickets before the draw that determines who plays who in the opening matches, they wouldn’t have known which teams they’d end up watching. (I fall into this category – I’m American and my husband is Dutch, but the match we’ll be watching is Team Paraguay vs. Australia’s Socceroos.) In any case, the atmosphere will be electric.

The level of passion may be just as high at the Fan Festivals and Fan Zones. These events, put on by the host cities, are typically free and open to the public. The 2026 Fan Festivals will take place in iconic locations such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Mexico City’s enormous Zócalo Plaza and may draw crowds up to 100,000. Reservations will likely be required, and security will be tight. Fan Zones are smaller events in neighborhoods around the host cities. Crowds will likely be smaller, and security less strict.

These events will feature live broadcasts of all the matches (not just those in the host city) and draw thousands of locals, domestic tourists, and international travelers who want to cheer on their national team with other like-minded fans.

Fan Zones won’t just be happening in host cities – they’ll also be held in cities across the host nations and around the world.

Team rivalries

The energy at any given match or fan festival will also depend heavily on the teams facing each other and how close the tournament is to the final. Certain soccer rivalries are especially contentious, including Brazil vs. Argentina, Serbia vs. Croatia, Germany vs. Netherlands – and USA vs. Mexico.

The USA vs. Mexico rivalry dates to 1934, but heated up in the 90s when professional soccer finally took off in the USA and matches actually became competitive. A couple of pivotal 2-0 victories by the USA stoked the fire over the following decades, leading US fans to taunt the Mexican team with chants of “Dos a Cero.”

The rivalry between the USA and Canada, while not as intense, dates back all the way to 1885, when the USA played its first-ever international match against Canada. The two countries currently have the biggest international hockey rivalry, having faced off in multiple Olympic finals and semifinals – most recently in the 2026 Olympics in Milan – and the current political climate between the two nations may also increase the animosity between soccer fans.

To prevent hooliganism at the World Cup, fans with a history of violence will be banned from traveling to the tournament. For the majority of fans, team rivalries are good-natured, and the World Cup is an opportunity to meet and mingle with other fans from around the world.

It’s going to be a World Cup for the ages.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / Lighthouse Films	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

Canada is considered a generally safe destination, with friendly people and stunning landscapes. Vancouver and Toronto have spent months preparing for you and hundreds of thousands of other visitors – but any event of this size can pose hazards. Here's what to know about crime, crowds, and extreme weather before you go.

Public transit safety during major events

Headed to Canada for the World Cup tournament? Vancouver and Toronto have spent months preparing for you and hundreds of thousands of other visitors – but any event of this size can pose hazards. Here’s what to know about crime, crowds, and extreme weather before you go.

Canada’s overall safety reputation

Known for its polite, friendly residents and cosmopolitan cities, Canada is considered an overall safe destination for travelers. The 2025 Global Peace Index has Canada tied for 14th of 163 countries. And the US State Department has issued its lowest-level travel advisory, Level 1: Exercise normal precautions, for Canada.

Nonetheless, crime does occur here. While a 2025 report from Statistics Canada indicates that crime is down in Canada, 62% of Canadians feel crime is a growing concern in their communities. Canada’s terrorism threat level has been listed as Medium since 2014, indicating authorities remain vigilant and prepared to respond to potential threats. And while gun control laws are strict, nine people were killed in a mass shooting in a remote part of British Columbia in February 2026.

Crime during the World Cup

Will Canada be safe for soccer fans? Travelers should be aware that FIFA has strict stadium guidelines that all venues must adhere to, and safety, infrastructure, and crowd management requirements that host cities must prioritize.

But it’s still important to prepare and stay vigilant. Check out our World Cup safety tips to help ensure a trouble-free visit.

Host cities and urban safety

Toronto, Ontario

Canada’s largest city, Toronto gets its name from the Native term for “meeting place.” It’s one of the world’s most ethnically diverse cities, known for vibrant culture and great food.

The World Cup 2026 is expected to bring more than a million people to Toronto. To host the tournament, the City of Toronto is spending an estimated CAD $380 million. Around $150 million will be spent on safety, security, and long-lasting upgrades to ensure the city meets all FIFA requirements. Plans include:

Temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras around World Cup events

Cooling infrastructure, such as misting stations and water trucks

Increased transit services, with priority lanes for buses and streetcars on Bathurst and Dufferin streets

A new, larger streetcar stop east of the gates to Exhibition Place near Fleet Street

BMO Field

Located at Exhibition Place west of the city center, BMO Field (renamed Toronto Stadium for the tournament) will host six World Cup matches.

Of the 16 total World Cup venues, BMO Field is undergoing one of the largest renovations. “Fans can expect a much different landscape around the stadiums than normal, with an expanded secure zone,” said Peter Montopoli, Chief Tournament Officer, Canada, for FIFA World Cup 2026.

Improvements and updates include:

Adding 17,000 temporary seats to bring capacity up to the FIFA-required minimum of 45,000

New approaches to entrances and exits

Three new elevators to improve accessibility

The temporary stands have drawn criticism online, with some residents questioning their safety. But Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which operates BMO Field, says they were designed to meet FIFA’s stringent safety requirements. The City of Toronto assured the stands meet building codes and will be tested before use.

Officials warn there will be very limited parking at the stadium. Fans are encouraged to use other transportation methods.

Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Toronto

Fans without stadium tickets can watch the matches at Toronto’s Fan Festival, being held at the Bentway, a new public space under the Gardiner Expressway.

Pride House Toronto 2026 offers a safe, inclusive game-viewing space and social hub for LGBTQI+ communities.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Flanked by snow-capped mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is a scenic and cosmopolitan city with a walkable downtown.

Tragic events are not unheard of here – the city made news in April 2024, when an SUV drove through a crowd at a Lapu Lapu Day festival, killing 11 people. But Vancouver also has wide experience with hosting major sporting events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and nine matches during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

Security operations and infrastructure upgrades for the 2026 tournament include:

200 temporary, closed-circuit surveillance cameras in areas associated with the tournament (required under Vancouver’s contract with FIFA)

Major transit increases along Metro Vancouver’s TransLink network, such as:

Extra bus service to routes serving the FIFA Fan Festival at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE)

A dedicated shuttle between the PNE and main SkyTrain lines

More frequent and extended service on the SkyTrain before and after matches

According to Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, security planning for the tournament will be led by the Vancouver Police Department in partnership with other Canadian law enforcement agencies. In February 2026, in response to concerns, he stated that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would not be involved in security operations.

BC Place

Vancouver will host seven FIFA World Cup matches at BC Place Vancouver, its iconic downtown stadium. BC Place is conveniently located a short walk from the SkyTrain. Though the stadium was upgraded for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, additional improvements are in the works for the 2026 tournament, including redesigned entrances, more elevators, and gender-neutral washrooms.

As part of their host city agreement with FIFA, the city will create a controlled area of about 1.25mi (2km) around the stadium. Extra precautions will be taken in the zone to ensure public safety.

Other FIFA World Cup 2026 events in Vancouver

Vancouver’s Fan Festival will be held at Hastings Park within the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) grounds.

Pride House Vancouver 2026 will offer game screenings, cultural events, and more.

Public transit safety during major events

Both Canadian host cities have extensive and reliable public transit. When I visited Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, my SkyTrain ride featured a jovial crowd of Canadians singing O Canada. I felt very safe, but it’s important not to let your guard down.

Toronto and Vancouver police have warned of a rise in pickpocket thefts at festivals, shopping malls, public transit, and other crowded places.

To avoid becoming a victim:

Carry your phone or wallet in an inside pocket or a zipped crossbody bag kept in front of your body – not in a back pocket where it can be easily stolen without you noticing.

Stay extra vigilant in crowded places, packed trains, and busy stations or transfer points.

Be wary of strangers in your personal space. Thieves have been known to use distraction techniques and sleight of hand to rid victims of their valuables.

Use your mobile phone only when necessary – otherwise, keep it secure and out of sight.

Weather considerations

Extreme heat is becoming more common in Canada. In summer 2025, Toronto had double the average number of days over 90°F (32 °C), while temperatures rose above 104°F (40 °C) in British Columbia, breaking Canada’s record for September.

Extreme rainfall events are also more frequent, along with severe storms and tornadoes in Ontario.

If there’s a heat wave while you’re visiting Canada, follow these tips:

Stay hydrated and seek out misting stations or shade

Stay inside during the hottest parts of the day

Wear a sun hat, sun-protective clothing, and sunscreen

To stay informed in the event of a heat wave, tornado warning, or wildfire:

Download the WeatherCAN mobile app to get weather alerts and forecasts

Visit Environment Canada for up-to-date information on affected areas

Health care access for visitors to Canada

Canada has a publicly funded, universal health care system – but it’s for citizens and permanent residents only. If you’re a visitor, Canada will not pay for your hospital or medical services. And your personal health insurance may not cover expenses if you get sick or injured when you’re away from home.

To avoid paying out of pocket for expensive medical bills, it may be wise to consider travel insurance with emergency medical coverage.

Travel resources for the 2026 World Cup in Canada

The Government of Canada has compiled these helpful resources for fans planning to visit for the World Cup.

For city-specific tips and advice, visit the official World Cup sites for Vancouver and Toronto.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything, and coverage may differ depending on the country of residence, state or province. Carefully read the policy wording for a full description of coverage, including the terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described.

<imageAttribution>Getty Images / Photo and Co	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

With 78 matches across eleven host cities, the US portion of the 2026 World Cup promises soccer fans excitement on a massive scale. The tournament is expected to draw 10 million visitors in the US alone.

Are the host cities ready for crowds of this size? And will world events impact this long-anticipated soccer tournament? Here’s what to know before you go, and World Cup safety tips to help you prepare, so you can focus on the excitement of the matches.

Safety tips for families traveling to the World Cup USA

How safe is the United States for international visitors?

Currently, both the Canadian and Australian governments have the US under a green “Exercise normal safety precautions” advisory. Violent and petty crime do occur, especially in urban areas, but the rate of violent crime is decreasing, and projections show that 2025 had the lowest homicide rate in more than 100 years.

Crime in US cities

The US is a vast and highly diverse country, and some places are safer than others. San Jose, CA, Los Angeles, CA, and Arlington, TX made SmartAsset’s list of the top 10 safest cities – all are host cities or host-city adjacent. On the other hand, host cities Kansas City, MO and Philadelphia, PA were ranked #45 and #46 out of 50.

It should also be noted that crime varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. Often, the most dangerous areas are places most tourists will never go.

The threat of gun violence

Gun laws in the US are less strict than in countries such as the UK or Australia, but regulations vary by state. The US has a significantly higher rate of gun deaths than most developed nations, but while mass shootings often make international headlines, these incidents make up only 1% of gun violence.

All World Cup stadium venues will have a fenced, outer perimeter with metal detectors and security screenings at the entry points. Weapons of any kind are prohibited within the perimeter, and there is a clear-bag policy for guests. Fan Festivals are expected to follow these same protocols.

Reliability of emergency services

The quality of emergency health services in the US is good, but can vary from state to state. Wait times in emergency rooms can be long, and the cost of care is high.

Visa issues

New regulations and executive orders from the Trump Administration have complicated matters for many international visitors.

Residents of the 42 Visa Waiver countries can apply for a visa online using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Fans from other countries will require a B1/B2 visitor visa.

The State Department has set up a FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (PASS) to expedite visa interviews for fans who bought their tickets directly from FIFA. However, having a ticket does not guarantee a visa will be issued. And in December 2025, Trump issued a proclamation suspending or limiting visas for foreign nationals from 39 countries. Several of these nations have teams participating in the World Cup. While the teams and staff will be allowed in, fans will not.

If you are planning to travel from abroad to attend the tournament and require a visa, apply for your FIFA PASS appointment right away.

Safety in major host cities

Compared to World Cup events in Mexico, sports journalist Joe Furey expects US events to skew “more corporate, tourist, and family.” Still, the participating teams and their fans will bring their own unique and unpredictable energy to every match and the events around it. And even though each US host city has experience with large sporting events, most have not hosted an event of this size and scale.

FIFA has strict safety and security guidelines that all host cities must follow. But the final responsibility for safety and security at the World Cup falls on the federal government and the host cities themselves. FIFA also requires host cities to provide adequate public transportation, health, and emergency services.

The US federal government has allocated vast amounts of funding and other resources for the tournament, including

$100.3 million in funding to expand and improve public transit in host cities

$625 million in federal security funding to cover law enforcement, cybersecurity, emergency response, and FIFA fan fests

$115 million in counter-drone technology

Advanced weather forecasting tools to help mitigate heat risks for players and fans

However, the US government shutdown has caused major delays in actually delivering the promised security funds to host cities. Many city officials expressed concerns about running out of time to prepare, and some cities quietly scaled back their Fan Festivals or planned events.

On March 12, the Department of Homeland Security finally signed off on release of the funds. But host cities may still need to scramble to get all their security measures and staff in place.

ICE at the World Cup

According to acting director Todd Lyons, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will form a “key part of the overall security apparatus for the World Cup.” ICE officials have said their role at major events is intelligence coordination rather than immigration enforcement. However, at the time of writing, the Trump Administration had not ruled out conducting ICE raids at World Cup matches.

On March 18, members of Congress introduced bills to prevent immigration enforcement within a mile of World Cup stadiums or Fan Festivals or on public transit during the tournaments, but passage of these bills is uncertain. For now, fans should expect an ICE presence in all US host cities.

Fans, whether visiting or local, should steer clear of protests or altercations involving ICE. Non-American citizens are advised to carry proof of their legal status – including passports and visas – with them to the tournament.

Public transit in World Cup cities

While the US is not as well known for its transit systems as many other nations, most of the host cities offer direct public transport to the stadium. In the others, fans will need to rely on shuttles or city buses, but these services have been added or expanded for the tournament.

Stadium upgrades and security

Most of the stadiums that will be used for the World Cup in the US were built for “American” football and usually host NFL games. They are all undergoing modifications to accommodate the wider pitch used in soccer, as well as improvements for better accessibility and traffic flow. No matter the venue:

Security will be strict, with a 2.5m (8ft) perimeter fence and a buffer zone surrounding each stadium

There are rules about what you can bring inside, such as:

Bags must be made of clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and no larger than 12in x 6in x 12in (30cm x 15cm x 30cm). If your bag doesn’t meet requirements, be aware that bag check may not be available.

Political signage is not allowed.

Loud noisemaking devices such as vuvuzelas are not permitted.

Fan Festivals and Fan Zones

Most of the cities will host a large (and likely free) FIFA Fan Festival and several smaller Fan Zones where fans without a ticket to that day’s match can gather to watch the game. Now that security funding has come through, cities are starting to formally announce their plans for these events.

For the latest on Fan Festivals and Fan Zones, follow the host cities’ social media and sign up for email updates.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta will host eight matches, including a semifinal, at Mercedez-Benz Stadium (branded Atlanta Stadium for the tournament). Their Fan Festival will be held at Centennial Olympic Park. An estimated 500,000 people are expected to visit the city for the World Cup.

Is Atlanta safe for World Cup fans?

Atlanta’s preparations for the tournament include:

New trains, more frequent service, and a more secure fare collection system on the MARTA rapid transit system.

Extended police shifts for higher visibility and specialized training for crowd management.

A $120 million investment in infrastructure, such as new streetlights and improvements to pedestrian wayfinding.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston will host seven World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium (Boston Stadium) in Foxboro. The Fan Festival will be held at City Hall Plaza. More than 3 million people are expected to visit the Boston area for the tournament.

Is public transit safe in Boston during major events?

While the MBTA (locally known as the “T”) is generally considered safe, World Cup games will increase ridership substantially. To prepare for the influx of visitors, Boston is making major investments in infrastructure and safety, including:

$46 million in federal security funding for emergency management agency strike teams and security in and around Gillette Stadium

$10 million to support World Cup-related transportation, public safety, wayfinding, and signage

$35 million to renovate Foxboro station and increase capacity and accessibility

Dallas, Texas

Dallas will host nine matches at AT&T Stadium (Dallas Stadium) in Arlington. The Fan Festival will be held at Fair Park. Nearly 4 million visitors are expected in the area.

Is Dallas safe for World Cup fans?

Dallas’ safety and security preparations include:

Security coordination between 25 local agencies and federal partners

Implementing anti-drone technology

Plans to create vehicle-free zones in downtown Dallas

Extra funding for security on Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) trains and expanded service during the event

Houston, Texas

Houston will host seven matches at NRG Stadium (Houston Stadium). The Fan Festival will be held in East Downtown (EaDo). The city is expected to welcome more than 500,000 visitors.

Is Houston safe for World Cup fans?

Houston has made extensive safety and security preparations, including:

Around $65 million in funding sought for public safety

Plans to deploy around 55 additional police officers on the METRO transit system

Large-scale training exercises with local law enforcement, federal agencies, and emergency management teams.

More than $9 million in federal funding for public transportation improvements

A Green Corridor connecting FIFA events and venues by rail and trail

Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City will host six matches at GEHA Field (Kansas City Stadium). Their Fan Festival will be held on the site of the National WWI Museum and Memorial.

Is Kansas City safe for World Cup fans?

Though Kansas City has something of a reputation for danger, city officials are making concerted efforts to help ensure fan safety, including:

$80 million in funding for extra security personnel and preparation

ConnectKC, a new, integrated bus service created for the World Cup that connects the stadium, airport, Fan Festival, and various regional sites

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles will host eight World Cup matches at SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles Stadium) as well as a Fan Festival at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Fan Zones at 26 locations around the region.

Is Los Angeles safe for World Cup fans?

Los Angeles has made numerous infrastructure and security improvements for the event, such as:

A massive modernization program at Los Angeles International Airport to improve traffic flow and connections to public transit

New shuttle buses linking key Metro Rail stations to SoFi stadium

Pop-up shade structures and hydration stations

Miami, Florida

Miami will host seven World Cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium (branded Miami Stadium). The Fan Festival will be held at Bayfront Park.

Is Miami safe for World Cup fans?

Miami is building on its experience hosting last year’s Copa América final. Preparations include:

Conducting scenario-based exercises to assess and improve existing security plans

Multi-layered security and ticketing checkpoints for fans entering Hard Rock Stadium

Expanded facilities at Miami International Airport to support an increase in visitors

New York / New Jersey

The New York New Jersey region will host eight World Cup games, including the final, at MetLife Stadium (branded New York New Jersey Stadium). More than 1 million visitors are expected.

Is public transit safe in New York during major events?

Home to more than ten major-league sports teams and annual events like the US Open, the New York area is used to hosting major events. The World Cup is on another level, but transit authorities are getting ready.

Special service will run on the Meadowlands Rail Line to and from MetLife Stadium before and after matches. Only World Cup match ticket holders will be allowed on the service.

Other transit and safety measures include:

85 buses added to increase service to MetLife Stadium

A PATH Forward modernization program aimed at improving transit speed and reliability, and updating major stations

Port Authority police deployed throughout the region to keep crowds safe

FIFA-sponsored training for law enforcement on counterterrorism and human trafficking

More than $17.5 million to protect against illegal drones

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In summer 2026, Philadelphia is hosting six World Cup matches plus massive celebrations for the 250th birthday of the United States. The matches will be held at Lincoln Financial Field (branded Philadelphia Stadium). The Fan Festival will be held at Lemon Hill.

Is Philadelphia safe for World Cup fans?

With so many high-profile events happening this summer, Philadelphia is investing heavily in preparations such as:

$8.7 million in funding to improve public transit and increase service levels

$70 million budgeted for police, fire, and emergency management

$500 million in upgrades at Philadelphia International Airport

Seattle, Washington

Seattle will host six matches at Lumen Field (Seattle Field). Unlike most host city stadiums, Lumen Field is located in the heart of downtown. The city will host Fan Festivals at multiple downtown locations and nine Fan Zones in communities across the region.

Is Seattle safe for World Cup fans?

“We’ve been working on the security plan for over three years,” said Seattle World Cup Organizing Committee CEO Peter Tomozawa. Security and infrastructure improvements include:

$17.4 million in state and federal funding to support transit needs for the tournament

Service increased on Sound Transit light rail lines and special Sounder commuter trains timed to coincide with the matches

Multi-agency communications training drills held to test and enhance security capabilities

National Guard trained in drone detection and anti-drone defense

San Francisco Bay Area, California

The San Francisco Bay Area is hosting six matches at Levi’s Stadium (San Francisco Bay Area Stadium) in Santa Clara. Fan Fest and Fan Zone locations to be announced.

Is San Francisco safe for World Cup fans?

Building on its experience hosting Super Bowl LX in February 2026, the San Francisco Bay Area is ramping up for an even bigger event, with:

$8.8 million for transportation planning, operations (including security personnel), and infrastructure improvements in and around Levi’s Stadium

$34.6 million in federal funding (split between San Francisco and Los Angeles) for drone detection and mitigation

AI technology deployed at Levi’s Stadium to assist in real-time crowd monitoring and management

Transportation and crowd safety

Traffic congestion

Traffic is likely to be heavy on match days, and some World Cup venues will not have parking available. Many host city transit agencies strongly recommend taking public transit to and from events.

Rideshare safety

Uber, Lyft and other ridesharing services are another convenient way to get around. If you use ridesharing apps:

Check the reviews of your driver before you accept

Make sure the name, face, and license plate of the driver in the app matches the person who picks you up

Travel with a friend if possible

Late-night transit

Many host cities have arranged for transit lines to run later to accommodate post-match crowds, but double-check the times so you’re not left stranded. Transit lines not associated with the tournament may have limited service late at night.

Stick to busy stations and transit hubs.

Avoid deserted or dimly lit stations at night.

Stay alert to your surroundings – don’t get distracted by your phone.

Crowd safety

Even the most celebratory of crowds can have potential for danger. Pickpockets often take advantage of packed transit cars or busy festivals. Overzealous rivalries can lead to violence. Panicked crowds can sometimes create a stampede. To stay safe:

Keep your belongings close. Carry your bag on the front of your body with the opening facing you. Keep phones and wallets in a zipped, inside pocket, not your back pocket.

Beware of distraction ploys where one thief causes a commotion to divert your attention while their accomplice steals your bag, phone, or wallet.

On public transit, be extra vigilant on crowded platforms or busy transfer stations.

At festivals or stadiums, know where the exits are and make a plan should you need to escape.

Steer clear of intoxicated or overly boisterous fans.

Health and emergency services

911 emergency number
911 is the number to call for police, fire, and medical emergencies across the US. Be prepared to answer questions such as the address you’re calling from and the nature of the emergency.

Hospital access
Most hospital emergency rooms in the US are required to provide emergency care to anyone who needs it. However, the cost of care is often very expensive, and your medical insurance from home may not cover you if you’re traveling abroad or out of state. You may want to consider travel insurance for your trip to the World Cup games to protect yourself against those potentially high medical bills.

*Travel insurance coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage

Heat waves
Extreme weather events are becoming more common in the US. A heat wave in June 2025 brought record-breaking temperatures to many states, and parts of the southwest are already experiencing extreme temperatures in March 2026. To stay safe in the event of a heat wave during the World Cup:

Stay hydrated, wear sun-protective clothing, and use sunscreen

Seek out shade and misting structures

Avoid activity during the hottest part of the day

Common scams to watch for

If you’re hoping to score a ticket to a FIFA World Cup 2026 match, be sure to buy from a reputable source such as the official FIFA website or from a secondary market with a guarantee such as StubHub. Be wary of anyone reselling their ticket online or on the street.

Other scams to be aware of:

Card skimmers: These illegal devices steal your card information when you use card readers at places such as ATMs and gas stations. Avoid this by tapping to pay or using an ATM within a bank.

Romance scams: Someone uses a fake online identity to gain your trust and then starts making urgent financial requests.

International travel document scams: Imposter sites claim they can help expedite your visa or passport process and charge you a high fee. Be sure to visit official State Department or government websites only.

To avoid scams:

Understand that scammers play on your emotions. Be wary of urgent, panic-inducing warnings or anything that seems too good to be true.

Avoid clicking on links or calling numbers in emails or texts if you aren’t sure who sent them.

Never give out your personal information, PIN, or passwords

Safety tips for families traveling to the World Cup USA

Make sure your children are wearing brightly colored, distinctive clothing you can easily spot. Take a picture before you head out for the day so you can show people what they were wearing if they get lost.

Write your phone number on your child’s wrist or on a piece of paper in their pocket.

Designate an emergency meet-up spot (a prominent sign or other landmark) in case you get separated.

Locate emergency exits and first-aid stations.

Behave with the same caution and respect you show back home and you’ll avoid trouble.

Traveling to Thailand soon? Download our free 14 day itinerary to discover the best of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the Golden Triangle, and more.

Respect the Thai King

Always carry your passport in Thailand

Avoid illegal drugs in Thailand

Thailand's legal drinking age is 20

Don't overstay your visa in Thailand

Respect the Thai royal family

In many Western countries, it’s normal for people to make fun of, or criticize national figureheads, even royalty. Thailand, however, has extremely strict laws called lese-majeste, under which people can receive long prison sentences for insulting its monarchy.

Like the UK, Japan, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, to name a few, Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. This means it has a Government, but its head of State is a royal figure. In Thailand’s case, that is King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Lese-majeste complaints can be filed by anyone, against anyone, and are always investigated by the police.

While it is rare for tourists to face lese-majeste charges, it can happen. So do not, in any circumstances, say anything negative about Thailand’s monarchy while you’re in the country. Also, do not write anything derogatory about the Thai Royal family online. It’s better to avoid mentioning them altogether.

There will also probably be times during your trip to Thailand that you’ll need to stand to attention as a mark of respect to the nation and, by extension, to its royal family. In urban areas, at 8am and 6pm every day, you’ll hear loudspeakers playing the Thai national anthem. Follow the lead of locals, stop whatever you’re doing, and stand still and silent until the song finishes.

Another version of this occurs before movies at Thai cinemas. Just before the film begins a video is shown celebrating the Thai Royal family, during which the audience will stand quietly. Do as they do to avoid causing offense and potentially landing yourself in trouble.

Avoid illegal drugs in Thailand

It can be a life-altering mistake to ignore Thailand’s stringent drug laws. You could face long imprisonment if found in possession of cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, LSD, opium, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, ketamine or magic mushrooms (among others).

And don’t be fooled by worldwide headlines about Thailand legalizing cannabis in early 2022 – smoking marijuana can still land you in a Thai jail. As of 2026, only medical marijuana is legal and you cannot smoke it in public. Many marijuana shops closed down and strict regulations are back in enforcement.

If a foreigner gets caught smoking illegal marijuana, deportation or time behind bars is a real possibility.

Thailand's legal drinking age is 20

In Europe, the legal drinking age ranges from as young as 16 up to 18 years old, while in Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada it is 18. In Thailand, you have to be 20 years old to legally buy alcohol. This may surprise some readers, as many teenage tourists drink alcohol while partying in Thailand.

No matter what other tourists tell you about the leniency regarding underage tourists and alcohol, Thai law is Thai law. And Thai police have publicly stated they’re cracking down on underage drinking more than ever since the pandemic. If you look young, you may want to carry your ID on you when in bars, just in case.

Planning a trip to Thailand? Find out how travel insurance can cover lost or stolen baggage, sudden illness, or other travel mishaps.

Don't overstay your visa in Thailand

Especially for backpackers slowly traveling around Asia, the desire to remain in Thailand for several months can be strong. And the same way you may hear it’s easy to get away with smoking weed, underage drinking, or not carrying any evidence of your passport, fellow travelers may convince you that overstaying your Thai visa isn’t a big deal. “You’ll just get a small fine,” they may say.

To an extent, they’re right. If you remain in Thailand beyond the date permitted on your visa you’ll be fined 500 baht (USD $15) for each day you have overstayed up to a maximum of 20,000 baht ($600). I have met travelers who preferred to pay that maximum fine rather than face the hassle of renewing their visa.

That is a big mistake for two reasons. Firstly, if you are caught by the police while wandering around Thailand overstaying your visa (as opposed to at the airport as you depart), you can potentially face more serious penalties, including a ban from re-entering Thailand for a period of time. Thai police have been known to conduct sweeps of areas where budget travelers stay, looking for offenders, so it's more likely than you might think.

Secondly, if you overstay your Thai visa by between 90 days and one year, you face a one-year ban from re-entering Thailand and will find it more difficult to get Thai visas in the future. The penalties also increase for overstays of more than one year.

Always carry your passport in Thailand

Thai authorities recommend tourists and foreign ex-pats carry their passports with them at all times while in Thailand. If you are comfortable doing that, then go ahead. Many tourists, however, are justifiably worried that constantly having their single most important document on their person greatly heightens the risk of it being lost or stolen.

I won’t advise against something that is law. Just make sure, at a minimum, you carry a clear, printed photocopy of your passport photo page, your Thai VISA page, and of your Thai entry stamp. Also, keep photos of these pages in your phone. It is very rare for tourists to be asked by Thai police to show their passports. But if this does occur, then at least producing a photocopy and phone photo of your passport will help greatly.

Beyond just staying on the right side of the law, there are a number of other things you can do to keep safe in Thailand. You can read more about them here.

<imageAttribution>iStock/tobiasjo	</imageAttribution><haveImageSyndicationRights>0</haveImageSyndicationRights><imageLicsensorId>	</imageLicsensorId><imageLicensorName>iStock	</imageLicensorName><imageCaption></imageCaption>

The LGBTQ+ travel sector is growing – but not all destinations are equally welcoming. Here are our travel safety tips for LGBTQ+ travelers.

https://www.worldnomads.com

LGBTQ+ travel is on the rise, driven by wider social acceptance and a broader range of experiences tailored for LGBTQ+ travelers. The LGBTQ+ travel market generated an estimated US$357 billion in 2025, and with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%, could reach US$640 billion by 2032.

But that doesn’t mean those travels are always friendly and inclusive. A 2024 poll by Booking.com found that 59% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travelers have experienced discrimination when traveling.

So, what can LGBTQ+ travelers do to help ensure a safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free trip?

Our most important pieces of advice are to:

Know and abide by the local laws regarding homosexuality

Be mindful of local customs and social norms

Use discretion in destinations that are less tolerant of LGBTQ+ people

Read on for our complete list of tips and resources for navigating challenging situations and traveling with confidence.

What are the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers?

According to the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2026, the top 10 most tolerant and welcoming countries are Iceland, Malta, Spain, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Portugal, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland.

The least tolerant countries are Afghanistan, Chechnya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Yemen.

Is it safe to travel to places where being LGBTQ+ is a crime?

There is no single, or simple, answer to this question. According to the Human Dignity Trust, 65 countries currently have laws prohibiting homosexuality. But how strictly these laws are enforced and how serious the penalties are can vary from country to country.

And even within a country that criminalizes or discriminates against homosexuality, attitudes and enforcement can vary. Large, cosmopolitan cities are often more tolerant and may have their own active LGBTQ+ communities. Tourist destinations may also be more accepting.

But wherever you go, it’s important to research the laws and social customs ahead of time.

Jesse Knight, a Trip Designer with Geographic Expeditions, says that before choosing a destination, he reviews government regulations and gathers anecdotal insight about the local climate. “I don’t specifically seek out or avoid destinations based on their attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people, though I may hesitate to visit countries actively passing anti-gay legislation,” he told us. “If choosing between countries with similar experiences, I prefer to support destinations that align with my values.

“That said, as a world traveler, you’ll inevitably visit places where political values differ from your own. In those cases, supporting gay-friendly businesses is one way to use your economic influence intentionally.

“I also believe in looking for the good in people. Being a thoughtful ambassador – whether as an American, LGBTQ+ traveler, or however you identify – can help broaden perspectives. Tourism creates exposure, and exposure often fosters understanding.”

How can you protect yourself when traveling in a country that isn’t friendly to LGBTQ+ visitors?

Some travelers prefer to visit LGBTQ+-friendly countries where they can relax and be fully themselves. But that can mean missing out on iconic and beautiful places in less-tolerant countries. If you do choose to visit a less-friendly destination:

Understand the local laws. Research your destination to find out if homosexuality is illegal, what is considered a crime, and how strict the penalties are. Human Dignity Trust offers a detailed map of countries that criminalize LGBTQ+ people.

Use discretion. In more conservative countries, the LGBTQ+ community may choose to keep a low profile, even if homosexuality is legal. Be mindful of the local culture and dress codes and avoid drawing too much attention or openly discussing your orientation.

Avoid public displays of affection. In countries where homosexuality is criminalized, hugging, kissing, or holding hands with someone of the same sex may be illegal and put you at risk of fines or imprisonment. Says Knight, “I avoid PDA even in private transfers or on trains. This is partly out of respect for local culture and partly out of an abundance of caution. I may also request two queen beds to make it less obvious that I’m traveling with a partner.”

Read the room. As Women’s Media Center columnist Marcie Bianco told us, even in places where homosexuality is legal but less tolerated, it might be smarter to leave people guessing about your relationship. Follow cultural cues – are people staring or glaring? Is there a sense of negative energy in the room? If so, this may not be the time for canoodling.

Make a plan. Says Bianco, “Following cultural cues demands that you and your partner be on the same page. This means understanding your plan for responding to any unforeseen negative circumstances. For example, if someone accosts or verbally abuses you, it’s often safer to disengage.”

Be wary of using dating apps. Authorities in countries with anti-LGBTQ+ laws have used apps such as Grindr and other digital platforms to entrap and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Criminals may extort LGBTQ+ app users by threatening to “out” them or report them to police. And hate groups may use apps or social media to lure users to unsafe locations.

What are some planning resources for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Destinations that tout their LGBTQ+-friendliness might still present uncomfortable moments for LGBTQ+ couples. Bianco highly recommends seeking out accommodations, nightlife, and activities that cater to LGBTQ+ travelers – these can help you feel safer and make your adventures more inclusive and enjoyable.

Search out websites or articles by LGBTQ+ travel bloggers and journalists that share places to go and LGBTQ+-specific annual events and activities.

Use platforms such as misterb&b to find LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, or use the Everywhere is Queer app to find queer-owned businesses and safe spaces.

Discover LGBTQ+-friendly destinations, tour operators, travel agents, and events through the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA).

How will new passport requirements affect LGBTQ travelers?

When traveling, it’s important that your passport and ID (driver’s license, etc.) match your current name and gender identity and have an accurate gender marker. This will smooth your way through immigration and airport security and help streamline the visa process if you need one.

Some things to keep in mind:

Some countries only recognize Male and Female gender markers on official documents. These countries may treat “X” (non-binary/unspecified) passports as invalid and/or deny entry. Visa applications or travel permits may also be denied.

Safetravel recommends that travelers contact the embassy or consulate of their intended destination to confirm if passports with “X” gender identifiers will be accepted.

If your current gender presentation doesn’t match your passport or ID, consider updating your documents. If that’s not possible, carrying a copy of your official gender marker change order may be helpful if you’re questioned.

As of early 2025, the US Department of State no longer issues US passports with an “X” marker. Applicants must now select either Male (“M”) or Female (“F”) corresponding to their biological sex at birth.

Existing passports using the “X” marker will still be valid for travel until they expire. But the new US policy requires airlines to submit traveler information using only “M” or “F” gender markers. Travelers with “X” markers may experience delays or questions due to discrepancies.

What's the risk of being a victim? We take a look at the situation.

https://www.worldnomads.com

Some people assume everyone walks around with guns in America. Not true. Nor are there gang shootouts on every street corner contrary to what tv shows like to portray.

For the most part, the people who own or carry guns legally aren't the problem. It's the criminals with illegal weapons that pose the most threat, and that's only a concern to travelers because there are so many illegal guns out there.

Gun Statistics

Mass shootings

10 most dangerous U.S cities

Gun Statistics

The U.S. Firearms Industry Today Report showed that U.S. gun manufacturers cranked out 4 million guns in 2023. That’s less than the three years prior to that.

As of 2026, it’s estimated that Americans own about 400-500 million firearms, with about 55-60% of those being handguns.

Recent data shows that about 43% of men, and 25% of women in the United States own at least one gun.

Nearly 1 million firearms were reported stolen between 2019 and 2023.

On average, more than 46,000 people die from gun violence in the United States every year.

Suicides account for almost 6 out of every 10 gun deaths in the United States.

There was a 19% decrease in homicides in the United States in 2025.

Mass shootings

Should travelers be scared of a mass shooting while in the US? In short, no. Statistically, the likelihood of you being killed in a mass shooting is very small.

The US Department of Homeland Security has published some advice on how to prepare for an active-shooter emergency but no matter where you are

Be aware of your surroundings.

Take note of the two nearest exits in any place you visit.

10 most dangerous U.S cities

Based on reports from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the 10 most dangerous cities in the United States in 2025-2026, as reported by U.S. News and World Report, were:

Memphis, TN

Oakland, CA

St. Louis, MO

Baltimore, MD

Detroit, MI

Alexandria, LA

Cleveland, OH

New Orleans, LA

Monroe, LA

Pueblo, CO

Of course this list should be viewed with a grain of salt. The chances of being randomly targeted remain slim, but if you stroll into the wrong neighborhood or walk on the wrong block, your risk of getting caught in the crossfire of drug and poverty-fueled violence may rise. Always ask locals which areas you should avoid. Some places are ok during the day and not at night, others can be a total no-go regardless of the time of day. Every place has its good and bad areas.
